Airlines cancelled 20 flights into and out of Dublin Airport on Tuesday as a result of the knock-on impact of an air traffic control technical fault in the United Kingdom.

The travel disruption affecting flights could last for days as further departures and arrivals were affected on Tuesday morning, in addition to the 115 flights cancelled on Monday.

On Tuesday night, Britain’s National Air Traffic Services (Nats) chief executive Martin Rolfe, said there was no evidence of a cyber attack. He said the failure was caused by flight data received by Nats, with both primary and back-up systems responding by suspending automatic processing.

Mr Rolfe said he also wanted to “reassure” people that all Nats systems have been running normally since Monday afternoon to support airline and airport operations.

He said: “Very occasionally technical issues occur that are complex and take longer to resolve.

“In the event of such an issue our systems are designed to isolate the problem and prioritise continued safe air traffic control.

“This is what happened yesterday.

“At no point was UK airspace closed but the number of flights was significantly reduced.

“Initial investigations into the problem show it relates to some of the flight data we received.

“Our systems, both primary and the back-ups, responded by suspending automatic processing to ensure that no incorrect safety-related information could be presented to an air traffic controller or impact the rest of the air traffic system.

“There are no indications that this was a cyber-attack.

“We have well established procedures, overseen by the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority), to investigate incidents.

“We are already working closely with them to provide a preliminary report to the Secretary of State for Transport on Monday.

“The conclusions of this report will be made public.”

Dublin Airport said its staff worked through the night to help and support any passengers who were staying overnight in the terminals, providing blankets and refreshments, while several food and beverage outlets were kept open all night.

More than 100 flights to and from Ireland were cancelled as a result of the fault on Monday, which knocked out the UK’s National Air Traffic Services (Nats) computer system for more than three hours. The issue affected not only flights between Britain and Ireland but flights that use UK air space.

“There is going to be some knock-on impact today and I suspect for another few days as airlines get their planes and get their services back to normal,” British transport minister Mark Harper told the BBC on Tuesday. He added government officials did not believe the technical problem was the result of a cyber attack.

The destinations affected by Tuesday morning’s flight cancellations included Liverpool, Naples, Verona, Riga, Cagliari, Heathrow and London City. A further four flights were cancelled to and from Cork Airport.

A spokesman for DAA – which manages the airports in both Cork and Dublin – said its team was “working hard to ensure impacted passengers are able to resume their travel plans as quickly and as safely as possible”.

Stephen Crosse was on the phone on Tuesday morning after queuing for three hours at the Ryanair ticket desk. His wife, Elaine, stood beside him. “When we arrived here, all the flights were showing here as on time,” she said.

[  Know your rights if your flight is delayed or cancelled  ]

It was only after the couple had checked their bags in that they found out their 6.25am flight to Naples was cancelled. They eventually opted to fly with Aer Lingus to Brindisi in Italy on Tuesday instead. “We’re out on car hire and hotel on the other end as well,” Ms Crosse, from Blackrock, Co Louth, said.

Deirdre Felloni, along with eight members of her extended family, travelled to Dublin Airport early on Tuesday to catch a 6.25am flight to Naples. Her brother-in-law is getting married on Thursday.

“Seven of them had already gone through, checked in and gone through security and were waiting in the lounge,” she said, sitting on the ground close to the Ryanair ticket desk.

Ms Felloni was about to check her bags in when she was told that the flight had been cancelled. Since the cancellation, she spent three hours queuing at the ticket desk. “[It’s] extremely stressful,” she said. “We’ve travelled, had no sleep most of us. We all came from Belfast, Enniskillen.”

Giorgia Porro, queuing at the Ryanair ticket desk, had arrived at the airport on Monday evening ahead of a 7.30pm flight home to Genoa, Italy – a flight that was cancelled.

After being turned around at her departure gate, Ms Porro, who was in Dublin for work reasons, was redirected to Ryanair customer service. She spent the night queuing for a new flight, without sleep.

“They gave me a new ticket, to Milan, for a flight that was overbooked,” she said. “They told me: ‘Just try, maybe someone doesn’t [show up]’.”

But everyone did show up to the 6.25am flight to Milan. “I went back to the gate, waited for the boarding, and then they said: ‘No seats for you’. And so I’m [back] here ... 15 hours later,” she said. “I can’t wait to sleep.”

Ms Porro thinks she might have to stay in Ireland for at least two more days because “all the flights to Italy are booked”.

Liam Curry was one of hundreds of passengers who were left stranded when a glitch in the UK air traffic control system grounded flights throughout Europe.

The threat of the Delta variant could scupper plans for Irish holidaymakers hoping to jet off from July 19

Despite Covid cases falling across the country, the HSE CEO Paul Reid has said we are still “at a point of unease.”

The threat of the Delta variant could scupper plans for Irish holidaymakers hoping to jet off from July 19.

Meanwhile, Dublin Airport says they are “ready when you are.”

Here is all the latest news on Irish international travel and the updates on spread of the Delta variant.

dublin airport travel updates

Dublin Airport update

At the moment, Ireland has the strictest travel restrictions in the EU. The Government’s advice against non-essential travel will remain in place until July 19, when it adopts the European Union's Digital Covid-19 Certificate for travel.

While Dublin Airport are still urging travellers to check travel advice and entry requirements for their destination country at the Department of Foreign Affairs website as well as gov.ie , the airport has released its tips and tricks for passengers.

The airport has reminded passengers to make sure they can provide a negative Covid-19 test as most destinations require a negative Covid test taken 48 hours prior to arrival.

The airport also has plenty of new safety and hygiene standards, including requiring passengers to wear a mask at all times and asking travellers to scan boarding cards themselves.

Dublin Airport have also released a video with all their advice to re-familiarise travellers with the process.

As restrictions ease and holidaymakers patiently wait for July 19 to jet off again, Dublin Airport has said that they are “ready when you are.”

Delta variant concerns

The main concern regarding the Delta variant was that it would push the planned July 5 reopening of indoor dining further away. Top health experts warned against the rising Delta variant and the damage it could cause.

As for travel, the Taoiseach said last weekend that we are “on target” to reopen foreign travel again on July 19.

While non-essential travel is planned to resume on July 19, people are still advised not to book a trip abroad yet. Concerns are growing that the spread of the new Delta variant could still scupper plans for international travel.

However, senior Government sources are reported to have dismissed the suggestion that the Delta variant could affect Ireland’s schedule for reopening.

The Chief Medical Officer, on the other hand, has advised against travel for anyone not fully vaccinated.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar explained that the CMO is advising that “people who aren’t fully vaccinated shouldn’t travel, people who are fully vaccinated can.”

However, Mr Varadkar also said that “the law (the Government is) putting in place is actually different than the CMO’s advice.”

According to Varadkar, it would be “unfair” to expect unvaccinated people not to travel once transport reopens.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan said that the country will “try and hold back the development of that variant here as much as we can and give us time to get vaccines out to give us cover against it."

Taoiseach Micheal Martin warned that we need to “keep our eye on” the Delta variant ahead of reopening society.

At the moment, everything regarding foreign travel is still subject to change.

EU Digital Covid Certificate

The EU’s Digital Covid Certificate should be in place by the time international travel resumes.

When Ireland implements the EU Digital Green Certificate, Irish holidaymakers will be free to soak up the sun abroad and explore the majority of European countries who will have already signed up to the digital passport scheme.

Anyone looking to travel will need a EU Digital Green Certificate with details of one of three things - proof of recovery from Covid, proof of full vaccination or proof of receiving a negative test result in the previous three days.

For those of us lucky enough to have received a jab, a QR code on your digital device will provide airport security with all the details of your vaccine.

Minister of State Ossian Smyth said that the HSE won’t be providing free digital Covid certs to everyone, however.

The HSE will only provide the EU Digital Green Certificate to those who have been fully vaccinated, everyone else will have to get a private laboratory test in order to get a digital certificate.

Unvaccinated people hoping to jet off this summer will need to provide a negative PCR test, have the EU digital certificate on their device and make sure they are aware of the rules for their destination country.

The EU Digital Covid Certificate will allow free travel throughout Europe and will be available to countries from the start of July.

Global Entry & TSA PreCheck Updates for 2024

TSA agent taking a passport and ticket

Speed through pre-flight security check points and re-entry into the United States when traveling with these two programs.

Since rolling out Global Entry in 2008 and TSA PreCheck in 2013, U.S. Customs and Border Protection continually updates these programs to the benefit of their membership. Some of the latest updates have helped members speed through pre-flight security processes as well as re-entry into the United States. Here are some things I’ve learned that are coming in 2024 that you should be aware of.

- Opens a dialog

Passport book with tickets

Take advantage of the efficiency of Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

"Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States by accessing the Global Entry processing technology at designated locations. TSA PreCheck is a Trusted Traveler Program offering expedited security screening at the airport, connecting low-risk travelers with security tailored to their TSA PreCheck status and a better air travel experience." – As stated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Of note: Global Entry members automatically receive TSA PreCheck with no additional application submission or interview requirement. However, if you choose TSA PreCheck only, and then find yourself travel internationally, you will be required to wade through the standard Customs and Border Protection (CBP) passport inspection lines which can be quite long during peak travel periods (and this not helpful if you are trying to make a tight flight connection or simply want to get to your destination faster). Memberships are designed to last 5 years and require a processing fee and interview with CBP (for Global Entry) or TSA (for TSA PreCheck).

As it has been in the past, biometric information remains at the heart of both programs and their identity authentication processes. The following new technologies have been embraced and are now in effect at select airports or will be deployed after “real world” testing at certain locations or with select airlines:

  • Global Entry Mobile App: This is currently the fastest way to re-enter the U.S. from an international journey. The moment your international flight lands at a participating U.S. airport, (currently available at: Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Miami International Airport, Orlando International Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, Pittsburgh International Airport, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport), open the app and follow the instructions to take a selfie which will be used to compare and verify your identity via your existing facial biometrics with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). After verification, you’ll receive a receipt on the app. Once you arrive at the lanes dedicated to Global Entry members, you can bypass the Global Entry biometric kiosks and go straight to the CBP officers where you will show your mobile receipt to quickly process your entry into the United States. To download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, search “Global Entry Mobile”.
  • TSA PreCheck Bag Drop: Select airports and airlines are participating in a new TSA PreCheck Touchless Identity Solution program. Your identity will be verified without presenting your government-issued identification at airline bag drops and TSA security checkpoints. As the progressive roll out of this new offering continues, you may be selected to opt-in to utilize this new program during mobile check-in if you have included your TSA PreCheck Known Traveler Number and Passport Number in the mobile app of the participating airline (currently, only United and Delta are working with the TSA to provide this service). Please keep in mind that you still need to present your physical government-issued ID if your airline requests to see it.

Secure biometric facial scans are an optional process for passengers, who may opt-out of the process at any time and instead choose the standard identity verification by a Transportation Security Officer (TSO). If you do choose to opt-out, you will proceed through the manual identity verification process.
