Royal Wave! See Meghan Markle's Shy Jumbotron Moment at the US Open
The Duchess of Sussex headed to New York City for the weekend on a last-minute trip to support close friend Serena Williams in the final of the US Open
Stephanie Petit is a Royals Editor, Writer and Reporter at PEOPLE.
Meghan Markle spent a low-key weekend in New York City — taking in a yoga class and surprising a friend for his birthday — but all eyes were on the Duchess of Sussex at the US Open.
The royal mom, 38, cheered on close pal Serena Williams at the women’s final of the tennis tournament on Saturday from the star athlete’s box at Arthur Ashe Stadium, sitting in front of Anna Wintour and behind Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian as Serena lost to Canadian Bianca Andreescu.
At one point, Meghan appeared on the stadium’s Jumbotron with her title “HRH The Duchess of Sussex,” as captured on a Twitter video shared by royal fan Michaela . The royal looked up to see herself on the big screen, then gave a shy smile and a wave for the camera.
“The crowd went wild when they showed her on the screen,” a spectator tells PEOPLE. “They did it as soon as they possibly could — it was the very first break in action.”
“She was very into the match and jumped to her feet quite a few times,” the insider adds. “She stayed through the whole presentation, even after Venus left, which people were really impressed by.”
The outing marked Meghan’s first trip overseas without her 4-month-old son, Archie . On Friday, she made an unexpected last-minute trip aboard a commercial flight from London, PEOPLE confirmed. Prince Harry remained home with their son in Windsor.
Despite being so far from her family, the Duchess of Sussex kept them close to her heart with her sentimental choice of jewelry . Meghan, who sported a denim dress for the tennis championship, wore two gold dog tag pendants by Los Angeles jewelry brand Mini Mini Jewels , one bearing her own “M” initial and also one engraved with “H” to represent her husband Prince Harry . Both necklaces featured a diamond accent as does the third necklace she owns, engraved with an “A” for Archie, which she is yet to wear in public.
“We are beyond thrilled, it’s been such an exciting day for us and we love Meghan, we were all hoping she would wear some of our pieces in public and now she has!” founder and designer Tracey Kahn tells PEOPLE , adding: “They are so delicate and tasteful, they really suit her style.”
The royal’s last trip to America was in February for her baby shower with close friends.
Meghan first met Williams at the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami where they immediately hit it off. Last summer, the tennis pro and her husband, who both attended the royal wedding, joined Meghan to watch Harry compete in a polo match in Ascot, England. Williams also helped throw the baby shower for her friend in earlier this year.
In July, Meghan and some friends watched Serena’s match at the Wimbledon championships. She then joined sister-in-law Kate Middleton for the women’s final.

Later this month, Meghan and Harry will be taking their first royal tour as a family of three.
The royal couple will bring son Archie to Cape Tape Town, South Africa, on Sept. 23. Although there’s been no confirmation as of yet for when royal fans can expect to see their son, the first scheduled stop of the couple’s visit is to a township.
They will leave little Archie — who was born on May 6 — with his nanny as they start the official first leg of the tour.

Prince Harry drops hints that he and Meghan Markle are thinking about baby no. 2
Sussex Royal highlighted Meghan’s USO trip writing that the Duchess “proudly went” on the tour with then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey. During the holiday tour, the Suits alum visited troops in five different countries—Spain, Italy, Turkey, Afghanistan and her future home, the United Kingdom—where she met with service personnel and their families. Sussex Royal added, “She was proud to recognise their service to the country.”
The royal social media account also shared a quote that Meghan said at the time: “I have always had such a profound respect for our nation’s troops and military families. I cannot thank them enough for everything they do for us.”
Archie Harrison ’s mom celebrated Remembrance Day over the weekend with her royal in-laws. The former TV star and Harry publicly reunited with Prince William and Kate Middleton for the first time since July at the Festival of Remembrance Service on Saturday. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped out again on Sunday for the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph.

Meghan Markle Shares Throwback USO Photo To Honour Veterans
Senior Reporter, HuffPost
Talk about a throwback!
In honor of Veterans Day in the U.S. and Remembrance Day in the U.K. and Commonwealth on Monday, the Sussex Royal Instagram account shared a slideshow that included an old photo of Meghan Markle on a USO tour in 2014.
Back then, Markle was best known as Rachel Zane on “Suits,” and was still a few years away from becoming the Duchess of Sussex.
Standing alongside Markle in the photo is actor Rob Riggle, a former United States Marine Corps Reserve officer, “Glee” actor Dianna Agron, country singer Kellie Pickler, former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher and former Washington Nationals pitcher Doug Fister.
“Thank you to all, for your service, sacrifice and commitment,” reads the caption on the collection of photos. “It has been an important week to recognise those who serve (and have served) as well as to acknowledge their families.”

On the 2014 Chairman’s USO Holiday Tour , the group visited troops in Spain, Italy, Turkey, Afghanistan and the United Kingdom.
There are even a few shots of Markle in this old video from the trip:
The duchess, Prince Harry and the rest of the royal family participated in many events leading up to Remembrance Sunday this past weekend.
The special day honors “the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces community, the British and Commonwealth veterans, the Allies that fought alongside us and the civilian servicemen and women involved in the two World Wars and later conflicts,” according to the Royal British Legion website.
Harry himself served in the British Army for 10 years and did two tours of Afghanistan, eventually becoming a captain.
In the coming weeks, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will take some time off from the royal spotlight on a six-week sabbatical for “family time,” according to a Sunday Times report published last month.
They are reportedly planning on bringing baby Archie to Los Angeles to visit his grandmother, Doria Ragland, for his very first Thanksgiving.

Meghan Markle Shares Throwback Pic from 2014 USO Tour for Remembrance Day and Veterans Day
Duchess Meghan was one of the people who commemorated Remembrance Day in the UK and Veteran’s Day in the US on Monday. She observed the special days by sharing a photo from before she became a Royal.
The throwback image, shared on her Sussex Royal Instagram, featured the Duchess in 2014 on Veteran’s Day. At the time she was on a USO tour visiting Spain, Italy, Turkey, Afghanistan, and the UK.
The post revealed that Meghan met up with service personnel and their families. She captioned the post noting that the day was “to honour those who have bravely served in the Armed Forces.”

The Royal also added:
“Thank you to all, for your service, sacrifice and commitment. It has been an important week to recognise those who serve (and have served) as well as to acknowledge their families.”
On Sunday, the Duchess joined other Royal family members at a Remembrance Day ceremony. Those who lost their lives in World War I were honored.
The ceremony was attended by her husband Prince Harry , his brother Prince William and his wife Duchess Kate , and Prince Andrew , the Queen , Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, to name a few. The event was held at the Cenotaph war memorial in London.
Charles, William, and Harry stood by the cenotaph to lay wreaths at the foot of the memorial.
On Saturday, Meghan and Harry attended the Festival of Remembrance Service at Royal Albert Hall. This was their first public outing with William and Kate since July.
“Thank you to all, for your service, sacrifice and commitment”
Meghan and her husband are set to wrap up their official duties for the year soon . The couple is then expected to take a six-week break.
During that time, they will visit with family members. The couple will be at their home in Frogmore Cottage in Windsor and the US.
Their trip to the Duchess’ home country will reportedly be an opportunity to take baby Archie to spend Thanksgiving with Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland.

Clinton shared some words of advice for the Royal saying:

Meghan Markle — aka the Duchess of Sussex — and Prince Harry — aka the Duke of Sussex — were in Austin this month for South by Southwest (SXSW) and the couple naturally had to grab some barbecue. This meant a stop at Austin restaurant La Barbecue
Per People magazine , the restaurant visit was planned, though the team had only thought that Markle was coming, not Prince Harry. The couple stopped by the barbecue restaurant on Friday, March 8, after Markle participated in one of the festival’s keynote panels, this one about being a woman in the spotlight.
At La Barbecue, Prince Harry and Markle posed for photos with owner Ali Clem, as well as the staff, and got a tour of the space — including the pits. They ended up ordering brisket and sausages, according to People .
Before their La Barbecue visit, People also reported that the couple dined at the Soho House’s private restaurant on Thursday, March 7.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had "no idea" of Catherine's cancer diagnosis until she broke the news to the world in a moving video shared on Friday, a source has claimed.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly learned of the news at the same time the rest of the world found out, which shows that "trust has been broken" within the Royal Family, according to an insider. The future queen began a course of "preventative chemotherapy" late in February, but is said to have a positive mindset for her recovery and is in good spirits, describing herself as "well and getting stronger every day".
Appearing incredibly stoic while delivering her devastating video message, the princess praised her husband Prince William for his love and support, saying: "Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both."

Catherine's cancer diagnosis was the reason William missed the memorial service for his late godfather, King Constantine of Greece , last month. Harry and Meghan wished the Princess of Wales and her family "health and healing", adding they hoped the Princess would be "able to do so privately and in peace".
But an insider said the Sussexes were not informed about the diagnosis before it was made public, as they told the New York Post : "They had no idea and only learned of the news around the same time the rest of the world found out. This goes to show the irreparable damage they have caused.
"The trust has been broken and the royal family is OK distancing themselves from them."
Last month, Harry returned to the UK after making an emergency dash from the US to see the King following his cancer diagnosis. The Duke cleared his diary and made the journey alone, with Meghan and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet remaining at home in California.
But there was no reconciliation between Harry and his brother the Prince of Wales during the visit, after the Duke spent around 45 minutes at Clarence House seeing Charles. He last appeared alongside the Windsors and the Waleses at the King's coronation, but hurried home immediately afterwards to mark his son's fourth birthday.
Since stepping down as working royals in 2020 and moving to California with their family, the Sussexes have aired allegations and grievances against the monarchy and members of Harry's family. The Duke's allegations against his family appeared unrelenting in the aftermath of Megxit with his Oprah interview, and, in the months following the Queen's death, his Netflix documentary and memoir Spare.
There were accusations of racism in relation to Archie's skin tone before he was born - with the remarks in the end alleged to have come from two senior royals - and claims Kensington Palace lied to protect William over reports he allegedly bullied Harry out of the royal family.
The Duke also accused William of physically attacking him and throwing him into a dog bowl in a row over Meghan, teasing him about his panic attacks, and, along with Kate, encouraging him to wear a Nazi uniform at a fancy dress party. While Charles and Harry were said to still speak, William has reportedly not been in contact with his brother for an extended period of time.

Inside Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry’s Low-Key Trip to Texas
After Meghan’s panel at the SXSW conference, the couple spent some quality time together in Texas
The couple first headed to la Barbecue, a family-owned spot in Austin. The restaurant shared photographs from their visit to Instagram with the caption “Thank you so much Meghan and Harry for visiting us today!! It was so nice to meet you both 🔥.”
La Barbecue director of operations Cory Rivademar offered more details on their visit in an interview with People .
“Their visit was a scheduled thing. They let us know that she wanted to come by, but [we] did not know Harry was coming,” Rivademar said. “They came in, and they toured the pits with Frankie, who is the pit guy, and talked about how hot it was around the pits—which is funny because this is Texas, and actually, it can be much hotter than today.”
Meghan and Harry ordered the restaurant’s famous eight-hour brisket and sausages. Rivademar described the couple as “absolutely lovely” and revealed that, after they’d left, she received a text from Meghan’s rep saying it was the best barbecue the Sussexes had ever eaten.
“I thought they seemed happy and sweet; he’s very lovely,” Rivademar added. “She spoke about their kid loving the new Disney movie, Wish . Very genuine and very loving. Happy couple. Nice to people who didn’t even know what was going on.”
The following day, the Sussexes surprised the family of one of the victims from the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, in which 19 children and two adults were killed.
The couple joined in birthday celebrations for the sister of Irma Garcia, one of the Uvalde victims who had worked as a teacher for 23 years prior to her death. John Martinez, Garcia’s nephew, shared videos and photos from Harry and Meghan’s visit on X. “MEGHAN MARKLE AND PRINCE HARRY CAME TO MY HOUSE !?!?!?!” he wrote in an initial post . “They’re such a beautiful couple and i’m so blessed, so glad they came to check up on the family.”
One clip shows Meghan holding a lit-up cake to Garcia’s sister while singing “Happy Birthday,” while Harry stands behind her. “Prince Harry and Meghan Markle singing happy birthday to my mom,” Martinez captioned the video.
Another snap shows Meghan posing with Garcia’s daughters. Martinez wrote, “Meghan Markle with Irma and Joe’s girls they loved every moment, practically besties.”
Afterward, Martinez told CNN the couple has stayed in contact with the family since the tragedy. “It was such a beautiful experience, they’re so nice and compassionate, very down-to-earth, humble people,” he said. “It was kind of by surprise, she [Meghan] had called my mom one random day and dropped the news on us not too long ago that she was coming to visit the kids, and of course we got so excited.”
Meghan visited Uvalde shortly after the tragedy, offering support by dropping off donations at a community center hosting a local blood drive. Through their Archewell Foundation, Harry and Meghan also partnered with the city and nonprofit Kaboom! in October 2022 to build a new community playground .

Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex
Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex is a feminist, champion of human rights and gender equity, and global role model. Her lifelong advocacy for women and girls remains a constant thread she weaves through both humanitarian and business ventures. She is noted as one of the most powerful and influential women in the world, topping lists such as TIME Magazine’s Most Influential People, The Financial Times’ 25 Most Influential Women, Variety Power of Women, and British Vogue’s Vogue 25.
She and her husband, Prince Harry have also been the recipients of the NAACP President’s Award as well as the Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award. Meghan’s global impact, and strong stance on resilience, equality, and compassion through action, have made her one of the most iconic public figures of this generation.
Born and raised in Southern California, Meghan attended Los Angeles based all-girls Catholic School, Immaculate Heart, which she continues to support as an alumna, before moving to Chicago to attend the prestigious Northwestern University. While there, she double majored in Theater and International Relations, and went on to intern at the US Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as to study abroad in Madrid, Spain. After graduation, Meghan turned her focus to the entertainment industry, landing her big break as a lead actor on the hit series, ‘Suits’ which she starred in for seven seasons. During her time off between filming, Meghan travelled to Rwanda, India, and across the globe working on humanitarian missions, and serving in key roles such as: UN Women’s Advocate for Women’s Political Participation and Leadership, a World Vision Global Ambassador, and a leading Counsellor to One Young World, where she inspired youth and women around the world through her passionate advocacy and hands-on approach to being of service. She also travelled to support the military community on a USO Tour, visiting six military bases in seven days including Bagram, Afghanistan.
In 2018, Meghan married Prince Harry, becoming The Duchess of Sussex.
An accomplished writer, she has contributed pieces to publications in the UK, US, and Ireland, and parlayed that skill into the creation of the successful lifestyle website, ‘The Tig’, where her thoughtful and inspiring op-eds cultivated a global fanbase. The Duchess of Sussex was the first guest editor in the history of British Vogue for their July Issue in 2019, which was the fastest selling copy in the history of the publication.
She and Prince Harry founded The Archewell Foundation in 2020 to support communities in need at a micro and macro level, in both moments of crisis as well as for long term aid. At The Archewell Foundation, they hold the value that charitable work should not simply be ‘a handout, but rather a hand held’, a phrase which Meghan first coined when supporting UK charity Smart Works, of which she is patron, that uplifts and prepares underserved women to enter the workforce. Meghan and her husband also founded and oversee production company, Archewell Productions and podcasting arm, Archewell Audio.
In 2022, Meghan launched ‘Archetypes’, a record-breaking podcast exploring the labels that try to hold women back; ‘Archetypes’ debuted at Number 1 in The US, UK, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand, and topped the charts as the Number 1 podcast in 47 countries, demonstrating her unparalleled global reach. After its first season, Archetypes was awarded The People’s Choice Award in the podcast category.
She is a NY Times Best Selling author, publishing her highly celebrated children’s book, ‘The Bench’, and “Together: Our Community Kitchen” a publication she spearheaded with the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen in the UK, who were displaced after the tragic Grenfell Fire. True to her character, The Duchess of Sussex mobilized to turn pain into purpose, working alongside this dynamic group of women to help them heal, grow, and develop their own business enterprises in the face of adversity. In addition to topping the NY Times Bestsellers list, “Together,” also debuted as number one on the UK’s Sunday Booklist, with proceeds going to the Kitchen.
Meghan’s influence in fashion has been coined “The Meghan Effect” with items selling out within hours of her wearing them. Her ‘effect’ has transcended fashion, shifting cultural conversations as seen with her op-ed for the NY Times “The Losses We Share.” The piece detailed a heartbreaking personal loss which spiked the conversation surrounding miscarriage to the highest it had been spoken of in over two decades at the time of publishing.

What a Time for Meghan Markle to Return to Instagram
King Charles is sick . Kate Middleton is plagued by countless conspiracy theories. Now is obviously the perfect time for Meghan Markle to announce a new business venture. On Thursday — just days after her sister-in-law took the fall for a major royal Photoshopping fail — an Instagram account popped up for something called American Riviera Orchard . The bio on the page reads, simply, “By Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.” If anything, I might be distancing myself from that title right now?
What is American Riviera Orchard? We know that it’s in Meghan and Prince Harry’s adopted home of Montecito, California . Other than that, not much is clear. The Instagram account has done that thing where there are nine images posted that make one big image on the grid, but the image is just the ARO logo. In an Instagram Story set to Nancy Sinatra’s “I Wish You Love,” the brand (?) shared a video in which you can see Meghan baking something in a beautiful kitchen, someone arranging a bouquet, and a woman in a navy-blue gown standing in a corridor. On the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website, the name “American Riviera Orchard” is trademarked for “jellies, jams; marmalades” as well as several other homey items like cookbooks and tablecloths. So maybe she’s coming for Williams Sonoma’s bag?
On the website for Meghan’s new project — americanriviera.com — you can add your email address to a wait list, but that’s it. What are we waiting for? Who knows! The timing on this is certainly odd. Perhaps her market research shows that people love buying jam in the spring. Whatever the case may be, she succeeded in grabbing my attention (and getting my email).
