'night at the museum 3' trailer #2: don't let the magic die.

'Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb' Trailer #2 shows Ben Stiller, Robin Williams and the rest of the gang trying to save the magic that brought the museum to life.

Night at the Museum  has become one of the bigger live-action family-friendly movie franchises of the last few years, thanks in part to the comedic sensibilities of leading Ben Stiller and the fantastical fun of director Shawn Levy's ( Real Steel ) visual style. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb   looks like it will continue in that tradition.

This time around, museum guard Larry Daley (Stiller) is on a globe-spanning quest to save the magic source that brought to life the exhibits and characters on display at the museum - including Jedediah (Owen Wilson), Octavius (Steve Coogan), and of course, Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams).

With new additions like Dan Stevens as Sir Lancelot and Rebel Wilson as a wisecracking British security guard, Night at the Museum 3 is offering fans a nice mix of something old and new - with some much improved special effects on things like living Dinosaur fossils and statue lions.

Of course, there is the sad footnote that this will also mark one of the last times we get to see Robin Williams perform onscreen - a bittersweet thought to be having while trying to enjoy some movie fun with the family over the holidays.

‘Night at the Museum 3’ Review: Ben Stiller and Company Seek Laughs and Tears, Find Neither

“Secret of the Tomb” tries for “Toy Story 3” levels of emotion, but the signs at this “Museum” might as well read “Do Not Be Touched”

tom cruise night at the museum 3

An early scene in “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” features an archivist, played by the great Andrea Martin, playing Candy Crush Saga on her computer. Had the camera remained over Martin’s shoulder, watching her continue to do so for 97 minutes, the film would probably have upped its quotient of laughs, suspense, and genuine emotion.

But no, instead we have to follow a plainly bored-looking Ben Stiller to London, ostensibly to fix the magic tablet that makes all the museum exhibits come alive at night, but really to put a button on this shrill kiddie franchise by turning it into a trilogy and suddenly pretending that the prospect of saying farewell to these characters will offer the emotional heft of “Toy Story 3.”

The previous chapter of this saga, at the very least, provided the entertainment factor of Amy Adams playing Amelia Earhart like a screwball comedy ingénue and Hank Azaria channeling Bobby “Boris” Pickett as a devious Egyptian monarch. This time, we’re treated to Rebel Wilson as a family-friendly version of Fat Amy from “Pitch Perfect” and Dan Stevens as Sir Lancelot; the latter’s preening machismo stops being funny after about three minutes and instead leads to sad thoughts about poor Lady Mary being forced to raise a child on her own at Downton Abbey.

There’s the usual chasing and pratfalling and whatnot as Stiller’s museum guard Larry — he also does double duty by playing a Neanderthal, but the less said about that, the better — tries to figure out why the tablet is disintegrating. “Secret of the Tomb” replaces the non-stop frantic action of earlier installments with Larry’s troubles as a divorced dad, what with son Nick (Skyler Gisondo, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” ) wanting to go DJ in Ibiza rather than attend college.

Perhaps director Shawn Levy was still in bourgeois family crisis mode after making the similarly unmoving and unfunny “This Is Where I Leave You,” or perhaps Stiller insisted on a more fleshed-out character before accepting one last paycheck for this series. Either way, it’s hard to get invested in the father-son dynamic here, even it when it represents a diversion from the limp comedy bits and the flatlined suspense.

There are a few scattered moments of enjoyment, whether it’s a topsy-turvy chase scene in an M.C. Escher painting or Ben Kingsley and Anjali Jay as rulers whose Pharaoh privilege blinds them to the fact that the Hebrews didn’t enjoy their bondage. (Kingsley gets more to do in a few quick scenes here than in the entirety of “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” go figure.)

Sadly, “Secret of the Tomb” also offers some of our last big-screen moments with Williams and Mickey Rooney; both receive a tribute in the closing credits. The this-is-where-I-leave-the-museum subplot gains poignancy only by virtue of Williams’ untimely passing this year, but in a movie like this, you have to take the lumps in your throat wherever you can get them.

Critic Reviews for Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb

Audience reviews for night at the museum: secret of the tomb.

Even its attempt at an emotional send-off is flat like the humor and script. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb continues to squeeze out its historical puns and adventure until there isn't a drop left, even the stellar cast, including the last act of the great Robin Williams, isn't equipped to save this film. 2/5

tom cruise night at the museum 3

this was travelling okay until they decided to rob an emotional ending with a three year later party. this franchise unfortunately never took advantage of the premise, could of been brilliant.

I get why a sequel to this movie was made. I get it. It's a way to close out a fairly successful franchise on a high note, at least by the series' standards. It's not like the world was really clamoring for a sequel, but they went ahead and made one because why not? Well I doubt that was really the reason as I'm sure the monetary rewards outweighed the fact that the series, in spite of everything it can do with historical figures, was creatively stagnant after the first film. While this film is a definite improvement over the second movie, it's not like it's that much different from the other two films that came before it. I think I liked the first movie because it was fairly new concept at the time and it was, while not a good film by any stretch, somewhat charming and cute. But while the story may differ from film to film, this essentially remains the same shit as before. It's the law of diminishing returns. First time a joke works great. Repeat the same joke over and over again and it loses its effectiveness. Then again, it's not like you can actually do anything different with this franchise. I mean the title pretty much gives it all away. You can ONLY do the same goofy shit you've done since the first film, only adding some new characters each time out. They've cornered themselves into this niche and there's no way to work around it that wouldn't 'betray' everything some people have come to know and love from this franchise. One positive about this film is that there are some welcome additions. Rebel Wilson is hilarious and she's great here, even if she's relegated to a minor supporting role that in no way affects the "narrative". Dan Stevens, as Lancelot, was also quite entertaining. I've only seen Dan Stevens in fairly serious movies, though The Guest has some darkly comic moments, so his ability and great timing at playing a goofier type of comic character certainly surprised me. I mean it's not like his character makes the film good or anything, but he did make it better than it would've been without him. Rebel Wilson could've also had that effect if her role was more important. I suppose that if you ever want to drag this series' corpse back to life for a quick payday with another sequel, then Rebel Wilson can star in it and I would be 200% fine with that. The thing about Stiller, while he does have some moments, is that, for the most part, his performance is really uninspired and phoned in there. I just think there's a certain fatigue that goes along with playing the same character three times over with minimal in the way of actual progression. Larry, since the first film, has been the same exact character. Nothing about him has changed. So I can imagine, as much fun as this film probably was to shoot, that he must not have been as inspired to play this character once again. Maybe it's just me, but I thought he looked uninspired as shit here. This is why I think Rebel Wilson would make a great substitute if they were ever to do a sequel, which I don't think they should do, because she brings an energy to everything she does. The movie, as mentioned, isn't that much different from what you've seen before. It does have some bittersweet moments, particularly in the climax with Larry saying goodbye to all the exhibits, and, of course, with Robin Williams that weren't difficult to watch, but it did remind you of what happened, which then made me sad again. If suppose if you love this series, then this film is probably the best sendoff for these characters that can possibly be achieved. I found the whole thing to be an easy enough watch. It's something that you get through quickly and painlessly, at least by my calculation. But, because of that, hardly anything comes across as memorable. There's no chance for anything to really stick. That has honestly nothing to do with it, since you can have a movie that's paced very well and is over quickly and still have some memorable scenes. Dead Snow 2 comes to mind right off the top of my head. I guess the whole movie is watchable enough. I wasn't angry or anything, it's just a movie that exists. It doesn't affect my life in any way, positive or negative, past just watching it and being done with it. Fans will surely like it, but it's really more of the same for everyone else and, with that in mind, I cannot recommend it. Well I can't recommend it because it's not a good movie, despite having its moments, but you've seen this movie twice before and it was better at least once of those times. So there you go.

A rather stale and unimaginative sequel, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb delivers the same old, same old. When the Tablet of Akhmenrah starts to corrode the exhibits begin dying, forcing Larry to take a team to the London Museum in search of answers. The core cast returns, but they give rather rote performances. Also, the film doesn't really utilize the London Museum very well; making it a pretty dull setting. Additionally, there's a tonal shift from the previous films, which feels a little incongruent with the series. Yet despite all of its problems, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb is an entertaining romp that has a bit of excitement to it.

Robin Williams Lends Night At the Museum: Secret Of the Tomb More Emotion Than It Deserves

Portrait of Bilge Ebiri

The Night at the Museum series hasn’t exactly been anybody’s idea of great cinema – or even okay cinema. None of these films has a particularly well-conceived plot, or emotional through-line. They’re mainly excuses to showcase characters from different periods in history coming to life, often through the magic of CGI – a pleasant diversion for kids, an inoffensive babysitter for the parents. But director Shawn Levy, at least in the previous two films, seemed like he could handle neither the big setpieces nor the more intimate moments: he trampled on quiet scenes and drained big ones of their energy.

All that said, this latest, and presumably final, entry in the series is not without its virtues. This time around, the modesty helps. The idea is that the magic Tablet of Akhmenrah, the Egyptian artifact that brings the Museum of Natural History’s various exhibits to life, is starting to corrode, and its power withering away. That means that the various characters that our hero Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) has befriended over the years – Teddy Roosevelt (the late Robin Williams), Egyptian pharaoh Akhmenrah (Rami Malek), miniature cowboy Jedediah (Owen Wilson) and his Roman general friend Octavius (Steve Coogan), among others – are all in danger of turning back to their stiff, lifeless, wax/bronze/stone/porcelain selves. That necessitates a trip to the British Museum, where the rest of Akhmenrah’s family can be found (including Ben Kingsley as his father, which means that Kingsley is currently in theaters playing an Egyptian pharaoh in this movie and one of their Jewish slaves in Exodus .

It’s a pageant: Rebel Wilson shows up (endearingly) as a British museum security guard, and our heroes even have a rather self-important Sir Lancelot (Dan Stevens) to deal with. The gags this time feel somehow both more throwaway and more inventive. At one point, Larry and Teddy Roosevelt jump into an M.C. Escher woodcut, and have to navigate its twisted sense of space as they struggle to retrieve the tablet; the result is like an A-Ha video on mushrooms. Meanwhile, Jedediah and Octavius find themselves in an interactive diorama of Pompeii, outrunning a sea of lava, when Dexter the capuchin monkey shows up, lumbering among the smoke like Godzilla. There’s a pretty hilarious bit involving Larry and his inarticulate, dim caveman doppelganger Laaah; the credits say Stiller plays both parts, but I spent the entire movie convinced Laaah was being played by a heavily made-up Tom Cruise, and am still not entirely convinced it wasn’t him. Anyway, it’s all dumb, but fun.

It’s also curiously affecting, for perhaps unintentional reasons. Much of the film involves Larry restoring the tablet of Akhmenrah to keep his friends from effectively dying – or at least returning to their previously lifeless selves, a process that begins well before the film’s climax. That establishes a sad urgency throughout, and the fact that the late Robin Williams is but the most prominent member of the supporting cast gives it a kind of weight. This is one of the beloved actor’s absolute final performances; I think he has an indie yet to be properly released, and one last animated role coming up. Playing Teddy Roosevelt in these films was nowhere near a highpoint for Williams, but it did speak to his fondness for these CGI-infused kids’ spectacles. His final farewell here is gentle, reflectively and almost unbearably moving. It lends the the film a retroactive grace.

Night At The Museum: 10 Fun Behind-The-Scenes Facts About The Ben Stiller Movie

Can we get a Jedediah and Octavius Thanksgiving special?

Ben Stiller and Robin Williams in Night at the Museum.

It has been more than 15 years since Ben Stiller and Shawn Levy introduced audiences to the exhibits that magically come to life at New York City’s American Museum of Natural History in the hilarious and star-studded Night at the Museum . The highly successful film would go on to become a popular film franchise that has an uncertain future .

But, before we get too carried away about the subsequent movies, which are some of the best movies on Disney+ as well as great options for your next family movie night, let’s take a trip down memory lane and see how it all started with these 10 fun behind-the-scenes facts that explain how Levy and company captured lightning in a bottle in 2006.

Shawn Levy Passed On Night At The Museum Several Times Before Finally Accepting The Gig

The Night at the Museum franchise has been one of Shawn Levy’s most successful ventures over the years, but the filmmaker behind Free Guy , The Adam Project , and the upcoming third Deadpool movie initially passed on the opportunity to direct the big-budget 2006 family comedy not once, not twice, but five times before finally agreeing to sit in the director’s chair. In a 2014 interview with the Los Angeles Times , Levy revealed that he didn’t pass on the movie because he didn’t like the material, but instead because he was scared of the production’s scale. Levy eventually talked himself into doing it and went on to make a movie that grossed $574.5 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo .

Ben Stiller Sat In With Most Of The Actors During The Audition Process

Although Night at the Museum features outstanding performances by the likes of the late Robin Williams , Owen Wilson , and eventual Oscar winner Rami Malek , at the core of the film is Ben Stiller’s Larry Daley, the night security guard who befriends the brought-to-life museum exhibits. In his commentary track on the film’s home release, Shawn Levy revealed that because the movie relied so heavily on interactions with his character, Stiller participated in most of the auditions for the actors who would eventually be cast in the movie.

Levy explained that this was done to see who had a realistic dynamic and great chemistry with Stiller on set as well as to see if they could pick up on his distinct rhythm and general vibe.

Dick Van Dyke And Mickey Rooney Auditioned For Their Roles

It would be only natural to assume that Dick Van Dyke and the late Mickey Rooney would have been able to walk onto the set of Night at the Museum without even having to try out, but like every other member of the cast, they had to go through the audition process. During the September 2020 Stars In The House Night at the Museum reunion streaming event , Shawn Levy explained that while some actors he’s run into over the years claim to be “offer only,” the two legends of the entertainment world went through the process, even if keeping Rooney in line was difficult to do.

The Night At The Museum Crew Re-Created The American Museum of Natural History On A Vancouver Soundstage

Night at the Museum takes place at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, but only a small portion of the movie (mostly exterior shots to establish the location) was actually filmed in the Big Apple. The vast majority of production took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, where the set designers constructed a massive recreation of the museum on a soundstage that gave them plenty of space to film the extravagant set pieces without worrying about destroying priceless artifacts. During an episode of Comedy Central’s Reel Comedy (which came included with the home video release), Shawn Levy explained that not only was it the biggest set he had worked on, it was the biggest he had ever seen in his career up to that point.

Owen Wilson And Steve Coogan Became Friends Filming Night At The Museum And Even Spent Thanksgiving Together

The on-screen pairing of Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan as a miniature cowboy named Jedediah and a Roman general named Octavius, respectively, was one of the highlights of Night at the Museum , and the great chemistry didn’t stop once the men playing enemies-turned-friends left the set.

During the September 2020 Stars In The House Night at the Museum reunion streaming event, the two co-stars talked about how much fun they had together on set and would go out and explore Vancouver when they were shooting. In fact, Coogan revealed that Wilson invited him to come spend the following Thanksgiving with his family in Texas.

The Inclusion Of The Opening Title Sequence Was A Last-Minute Decision

The Night at the Museum opening title sequence helps welcome the audience into the world in which they are about to spend the next two hours with epic displays of the exhibits in their respective areas of the museum, but this wasn’t always how the movie was supposed to open. During his director commentary track, Shawn Levy revealed that the sequence wasn’t added until well into the editing process and was something that came to him in the middle of the night:

About halfway through the editing process, I woke up and found that if we could open the movie in this way with basically kind of images of the museum, of the world that was going to come to life later on, we might get out of the gate with a bigger sense of scale, a bigger sense of wonderment, and the promise of what’s to come.

After having that thought, Levy spoke with his editor, said they were starting the movie all wrong, and then came up with sequence that opened the final cut of the film.

Mission Impossible Inspired The Ben Stiller Running Scene

There’s a scene in Night at the Museum where Ben Stiller’s character races through the corridors of the building in an attempt to save one of the cavemen who has made his way outside. In his director commentary, Shawn Levy admitted that he and Stiller were both massive fans of Tom Cruise’s running scenes in the first three Mission: Impossible movies, and saw this as a way to pay homage to his work. And, though it’s only a few seconds of running opposed to extended sequences, Levy was proud of his little “family comedy” version of it.

Shawn Levy Was On A Ladder And Chased Ben Stiller During The ‘Rexy’ Scene

The scene in Night at the Museum where Rexy the T-Rex chases Larry Daley through the American Museum of Natural History on his first night on the job is one of the most exciting of the early parts of the film, but Ben Stiller allegedly had trouble getting into the mode on the day it was filmed. During the Stars In The House Night at the Museum reunion streaming event, Shawn Levy broke down the ridiculous way he helped the star get into the zone:

I had like the short-armed talons and literally so it’s Ben at one end of the hall. I’m on a ladder going ‘Rawr,’ and the ladder was on wheels so that these grips could roll me down the corridor so that I could be ‘Rexy’ chasing after Ben Stiller so he wouldn’t have to ‘fake it.’

During the conversation, Stiller explained that this wasn’t an exception on set, as Levy was constantly going above and beyond to give the whole shoot that same kind of energy.

Despite Improvising Their Lines, Ben Stiller And Owen Wilson Were Only On Set Together For One Day

The interactions between Ben Stiller’s Larry Daley and Owen Wilson’s Jedediah in Night of the Museum are some of the best parts of the movie, and they’re even better when you realize that much of the dialogue was completely improvised. Couldn’t get better than that, right? Well, in the director commentary, Shawn Levy revealed that not only were the scenes improvised but they had to come up with an elaborate system to have those conversations work out, because the Zoolander co-stars were only on set together for one day.

In order to complete these scenes, Stiller would act out the scenes holding a toothpick with 20 different versions of a line. Levy would then record those lines and then feed them back to Wilson when he arrived on set several months later. Levy referred to this process as “retroactively improvisational” because they weren’t in the same room or same country.

A Tennis Ball Was Used As A Stand-In For Dexter During The Slap Scene

One of the funniest moments in Night at the Museum comes when Dexter, the stuffed capuchin monkey, and Larry Daley exchange a series of slaps after the monkey steals the night guard’s key ring. But, don’t worry, no monkeys were harmed in this scene, as Shawn Levy revealed in his commentary track. In order to pull this off, Ben Stiller repeatedly slapped a tennis ball that was then replaced with a digital version of Dexter. However, Stiller was actually on the receiving end of some monkey slaps from Crystal, the capuchin trained for the movie.

Well, this certainly makes me want to go back and watch Night at the Museum again. And, who knows, maybe I’ll give the whole franchise another watch and come back with some more behind-the-scenes facts. In the meantime, check out some of the other great Ben Stiller movies .

Laaa

Laaa is one of the characters of  Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb . He is the latest addition to the Neanderthal exhibit of Museum of Natural History.

  • 1.1 Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
  • 1.2 Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again

History [ ]

Night at the museum: secret of the tomb [ ].

He is a Neanderthal best known for resembling Larry Daley . Laaa is the latest addition after the last Neanderthal perished after going into contact with sunlight. He does not speak but communicates with caveman whispers and grunts. He feels especially close to Larry, seeing him as his father figure. He listens to him and seems to feel intimidation from Nicky. He is later seen having a relationship with Tilly .

Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again [ ]

Laaa is excited to see Nick when he takes on the job as night guard of the museum after his father left. Laaa with Rexy, Attila, Jedediah, Octavius, Dexter and Joan of Arc help Nick after he accidentally lets Kahmunrah escape.

Laaa and the others go on an adventure chasing him down. They finally defeat him at the temple and send him back to where he belongs.

  • Laaa in canon was made to look like Larry, leading to Laaa and Larry both being played by Ben Stiller.
  • In Kahmunrah Rises Again, Teddy says how Laaa discovered fire when he was 11. This makes no sense though, seeing as Laaa was made just to look like Larry in canon, meaning that he does not have a canonical background.

Did Tom Cruise Star in Night at the Museum?

I'm sure I remembered Tom Cruise playing Laaa in Night at the Museum. It would have been a perfect and hilarious casting choice. However, director Shawn Levy's third installment of the franchise was a bit of a letdown. Ben Stiller reprised his role as Larry Daley, but the movie didn't quite live up to its predecessors.

It's true that Tom Cruise did appear in the trailer for Night at the Museum, but he didn't actually feature in the film itself. He played one of the cavemen, but his scenes were cut from the final version.

I figured out which one was the real Tom Cruise by looking for the center tooth. The one of the left doesn't have a center tooth, so the one on the right must be the real Tom Cruise. It's called an egg tooth. It allows him to break through the shell when he's hatching. Usually the egg tooth has fallen out by now.
