What’s more, there’s a brilliantly hidden zipper pocket, large enough for a passport and smartphone.

The natural folds of the fabric make the pocket invisible and anything you slip inside won’t look bulky or obvious at all. Isn’t a travel scarf a super awesome way to hide money when traveling? Then there’s its very attractive price point, which means getting hold of a MeiPing Zipper Scarf isn’t going to break the bank or affect your vacation plans!

Trtl Pillow

Available for both adults and children thanks to a dedicated child-friendly size, the Trtl Pillow has rightly been getting rave reviews for some time now. Taking the idea of a travel scarf to new heights, the Trtl Pillow is a soft, scarf-like construction that wraps around your neck to keep your head up while sleeping on trains, planes, and other forms of transport. It manages to support your head, preventing a cricked neck, because of a cleverly hidden internal support, which is the only thing that limits its packability. However, it can also be hung from your bag without issue, weighs just half a pound, and is machine washable too. How good’s that!

As a looped infinity scarf, it’s very difficult for anyone to snatch from around your neck, making the hidden passport pocket all the more secure a place to hide your valuables while enjoying the sights your destination has to offer. It has a great price too, and though the advertising suggests this is one for the ladies, we reckon it wouldn’t look out of place on the shoulders of a fashionable dude either!

It is made with 100% cotton, making the infinity loop design breathable despite its extra warmth, but is still surprisingly lightweight despite this additional thickness. Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

You’ve decided on a travel scarf as a way of keeping your valuables safe without the need for a bag or money belt – great! But how do you know which of the many travel scarves now on the market is the best one for you?

Destination

A good place to start is to think about when and where you plan to use your newly purchased travel scarf. If, like most, you’re aim is to use the travel scarf as a spring/summer accessory, providing a little protection from the sun and evening chills, then you’ll want to opt for one of the lighter styles. The great news here is that the majority of travel scarves fall into this bracket. If you’re heading to cooler climes during the winter, you’ll probably be looking for a travel scarf with a heavier fabric.

Then think about your own personal style. If you end up picking a travel scarf that doesn’t match your personality or go with the majority of your clothes, you’re likely to leave it unused at home! Worse still, you might carry it around the world with you, but never want to put it on! This is possibly more important for male travelers, as many travel scarves appear to be aimed at the women’s market, and some can seem a little feminine for some tastes (both male and female). If this is you – keep an eye out for unisex options!

Remember also to think carefully about what exactly you want your travel scarf for. Is it to use as a shawl or wrap if it gets chilly, as a sleep aid on flights and other forms of transport, or as a hands-free means of keeping valuables close at hand? Your thoughts on this question will help you narrow your search, while knowing exactly what you plan to store in the hidden pocket (if that’s the sort of travel scarf you’re after) will ensure you also end up purchasing one that fits everything in!

Finally, there’s pricing. Everyone has a budget, and as you’ll see from our lowdown of the best travel scarves there are a wide range of price tags associated with this accessory. That, of course, means that there’s probably a travel scarf out there that will meet your budgetary requirements, whether you’re a hard-up vagabond, or someone looking for extras (such as RFID protection), or someone who doesn’t mind splashing the cash for the perfect travel scarf for you!

I love my Barefoot Dreams wrap! So soft and cozy and certainly large enough for great coverage. It’s ideal for a cold-climate trip, and is a perfect choice for long cross-country or overseas flights. Best of all, it’s machine washable AND dryable!

Love this! Blanket scarves and turkish towels can be used in similar ways – use them as scarves, blankets and even a pillow or lumbar support in a pinch. The turkish towel can obviously be used as a towel as well. Very versatile and help keep packing to a minimum!

The Best Blanket Scarves to Have With You at 30,000 Feet

By Juliet Izon

The Best Blanket Scarves to Have With You at 30000 Feet

One of the most significant lessons frequent travelers learn is the importance of packing only what you need. Ask any seasoned, globe-trotting journalist or f light attendant when they last checked a bag on a flight and they’ll probably have trouble remembering.

To that end, we also know the importance of packing items that serve double-duty. One of my favorite packing list hacks is bringing a scarf or wrap that doubles as a blanket while I’m traveling. While this sort of accessory may be de rigueur during the colder months , we’ve all been witness to when plane temperatures dip into Arctic Circle range (and the airlines' little felt squares don’t do much to mitigate the cold).

Enter: A super soft, oversized wrap. Not only will you feel a little chicer as you stroll through the airport, you’ll be toasty for the duration of the flight, and might just get some shut-eye . From cashmere scarves to chunky knit wraps, read on for 11 blanket scarves worth adding to your travel uniform.

Best cashmere scarf

Cashmere fanatics are likely familiar with White + Warren, a brand known for its impossibly soft sweaters, hats, and scarves. But the cashmere travel wrap may be the ultimate buy: It’s made from a lightweight and breathable cashmere that drapes beautifully, but still offers warmth when you’re bundled up in your seat. It comes in either a rich black or muted gray, meaning it’ll go well with anything in your suitcase .

travel scarf grey

Best affordable cashmere

We love Quince for its high-quality cashmere products at affordable prices. This wrap is one of our favorite pieces from the brand: It’s made from ultra-soft Mongolian cashmere, comes in a range of lovely neutral colors, and is only $100. To take your plane outfit to the next level, pair it with a matching cashmere tee .

travel scarf grey

Best pocket scarf

Blanket scarves already pull double-duty, but this checkered number hits triple, thanks to two pockets that can stash anything from your phone to snacks to chilly hands. Tassels on the end give it a bit of flair, and the wool-cashmere blend is both soft and durable.

travel scarf grey

Best sustainable scarf

Not only is this plush piece from Cuyana incredibly soft, you’re helping to keep cashmere out of the landfill when you buy it. Each scarf is woven in Italy from recycled fibers and finished with a jaunty bit of fringe on the ends.

travel scarf grey

Best multi-colored scarf

This brand’s bestseller is this GOTS-certified organic cotton wrap, which looks as good draped over a little black dress as it does with a coordinating sweatsuit . We love the four color-blocked varieties, ranging from a peppy blush to a cheery sky blue, to add a bit of color to your plane wardrobe.

travel scarf grey

Best solid color

A cashmere wrap that’s under $200 and sustainable? J.Crew’s cozy wrap, which comes in a range of colors from classic red to utility green, hits both notes, as it's made from cashmere that’s sourced responsibly. (The company is the first US partner of Aid by Trade Foundation , a nonprofit that promotes sustainable agricultural development around the world.)

travel scarf grey

Best long scarf

As the name implies, this wrap is a generous piece of fabric that’s 44-inches wide by 72-inches long. The material is a sleek mix of 95 percent Tencel Modal and five percent Spandex; the stretch is key for allowing it to drape just so over your shoulders. We love that it comes in a full rainbow of colors, from a cherry red that can go straight from the jetway to a fancy dinner, to a muted sand that would pair well with virtually any other shade. Plus, it’s fully machine washable and can go in the dryer without shrinking.

travel scarf grey

Best splurge

Quiet luxury this is not. The iconic Burberry check is recognizable from across the terminal—but if you’re looking for a voluminous, soft, and classic wrap, you can’t do much better than pieces from this storied English brand. Plus, because it’s reversible, it’s kind of like buying two pieces in one, right?

travel scarf grey

Best wool scarf

Houndstooth is a perennially chic print that can coordinate with almost everything. We especially adore Tbco.’s oversized scarf in the style, which comes in colorways of camel, berry, and slate. And because it’s made of lambswool (fibers gathered from a lamb’s first shearing), it’s smoother and stronger than any other type of wool, as well as being naturally moisture-repellent and heat-retaining.

travel scarf grey

Best jersey scarf

If you’re looking for something a little more lightweight than a cashmere or a wool, jersey is an excellent alternative. Not only does it drape elegantly, but the material’s stretchiness is also useful for wrapping yourself up on a chilly plane. We love that Frank & Eileen’s version is 90-inches long, which gives you plenty of fabric to work with.

travel scarf grey

Best ultra-soft scarf

If you’re looking to inject color into your plane outfit, we love Partaje’s extra-wide, striped scarf. The piece is made from 100 percent cashmere that was crafted on traditional looms in England. If it feels extra-soft even for cashmere, your fingers are not mistaken: Each oversized scarf is hand-brushed as a final touch. And if you’re extra cold on (or off) the plane, there’s a matching beanie calling your name.

A Rare Gray Whale, Believed Extinct in the Atlantic for 200 Years, Has Been Spotted off New England

Scientists say a lack of Arctic sea ice due to climate change could have created a passageway for the mammal to travel from the Pacific Ocean

aerial shot of a Gray Whale in the ocean

In an “incredibly rare event,” scientists have spotted a gray whale off the coast of Massachusetts, diving and resurfacing in the waters around Nantucket. The sighting left the team astonished: The species has been presumed extinct in the Atlantic Ocean for more than 200 years.

“I didn’t want to say out loud what it was, because it seemed crazy,” says Orla O’Brien , an associate research scientist at the New England Aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, in a statement .

On March 1, aquarium scientists were conducting an aerial survey flight 30 miles south of Nantucket, a small island off Cape Cod, when an unusual whale caught their attention. The plane hovered over the area for 45 minutes and captured photos as the animal dove repeatedly, appearing to be feeding. Upon landing, researchers immediately reviewed their images and confirmed the species was, in fact, the rare gray whale.

“My brain was trying to process what I was seeing, because this animal was something that should not really exist in these waters,” says New England Aquarium research technician Kate Laemmle in the statement. “We were laughing because of how exciting this was—to see an animal that disappeared from the Atlantic hundreds of years ago!”

In an incredibly rare event, our #AndersonCabotCenter aerial survey team spotted a gray whale off the New England coast last week, a species that has been extinct in the Atlantic for more than 200 years! More: https://t.co/skjKK3zk29 #AerialSurvey #GrayWhale pic.twitter.com/cKUzqaJCOA — New England Aquarium (@NEAQ) March 5, 2024

A distinct creature, the gray whale can be difficult to come by but easy to confirm. Their lack of a dorsal fin, along with trademark mottled-gray-and-white skin and a ridged dorsal hump, make the animals clearly distinguishable from other species. The gray whale is also a large presence: One of these massive mammals can span up to 49 feet long and weigh about 90,000 pounds. Commercial whalers nicknamed the species “devil fish” due to its aggressive responses to harpoons. This hunting contributed to the animal’s endangered status.

Though gray whales frequently cruise the waters of the Pacific Ocean, the species vanished from the Atlantic in the 18th century. In the last 15 years, only five of the mammals have been seen in Atlantic and Mediterranean waters. One of the observations, a sighting off the coast of Florida in December 2023, is believed to be the same gray whale spotted off New England.

A few factors could have spurred the whale’s rare Atlantic appearance. Joshua Stewart , a quantitative ecologist at Oregon State University who did not participate in the survey, tells the New York Times ’ Remy Tumin that an “ unusual mortality event ” of gray whales on the West Coast is coming to an end, and in those situations, the animals tend to show up in unexpected places.

Additionally, scientists say climate change is likely playing a role. The Northwest Passage, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans north of Canada, has recently been ice-free during the summer due to rising global temperatures, allowing gray whales to travel through the passage in a manner previously impossible.

This single gray whale could be a harbinger of a future Atlantic population, scientists say. “What is really cool is that we could be watching the recolonization of the Atlantic gray whale in real time,” Stewart tells the New York Times . But that process would be a slow one, he adds.

While a possible future population would take decades or centuries to build up, this individual appearance—and the small handful of others—convey a more immediate impact. “These sightings of gray whales in the Atlantic serve as a reminder of how quickly marine species respond to climate change, given the chance,” says O’Brien in the statement.

Scientists still consider the gray whale to be extinct in the Atlantic, since they haven’t found evidence of a breeding population, reports the  Cape Cod Times ’ Heather McCarron.

“This sighting highlights how important each survey is,” O’Brien says in the statement. “While we expect to see humpback, right and fin whales, the ocean is a dynamic ecosystem, and you never know what you’ll find.”

We spent over $3,300, took 2 flights, and glamped for days to pet gray whales in Mexico

  • My husband and I spent over $3,300 to go on a whale-watching expedition in Mexico .
  • The price of the trip included three meals per day and a glamping tent with a bed and a shower.
  • We got to spend lots of time with the whales up close, which is an experience I'll never forget.

Insider Today

I'm a bit of a whale-watching addict. So when I saw a TikTok of people hanging over the side of tiny boats to pet a gray whale on the head, I knew I had to find a way to experience it for myself.

After doing some research, I learned that the optimal time to visit their protective breeding and calving lagoons in Baja, Mexico, was starting in February, just a few months away.

However, the San Ignacio lagoon, which is the epicenter of gray whale activity, is only accessible through licensed tour companies . So, my husband and I booked a four-day, three-night glamping trip with Baja Expeditions, a company known for sustainable tourism.

Although the experience can cost upwards of $2,500 per person, we were able to score a trip for $1,650 each through a Super Bowl weekend deal.

Our journey started with 2 flights to the San Ignacio Lagoon

We kicked off the trip by flying from Seattle to Cabo San Lucas, where we headed to the Baja Expeditions offices.

When we arrived, a chartered bus shuttled our entire tour group to the San Jose del Cabo International Airport, where we stuffed 14 people into small Cessna planes.

For the next two hours, we watched over the pilot's shoulder as he flew the plane. I plastered my face against the window to take in the incredible canyon-filled scenery, marveling at the remote version of Mexico I didn't know existed.

When we landed on the shoreline of the San Ignacio Lagoon, a Baja Expeditions employee welcomed us with bubbly.

I was surprised to find there was no warm, tropical climate, and was instantly grateful that I followed the packing list provided to us and packed a puffer jacket.

It definitely took me a second to adjust to the cold temperatures.

We arrived at our campsite and enjoyed some lunch

After grabbing our bags, we were loaded into SUVs and taken to the glamping grounds, which would serve as our home for the next four days.

Inside our tent was a space heater, a tent shower that had water warmer than most hotels I've stayed in, and bed with cozy fleece-lined electric blankets.

In the dining tent, we enjoyed a lunch of gourmet Thai-style chicken salads. I was excited at the prospect of all the included breakfast, lunch and dinner meals to come since they were included in the price of the trip.

As we ate, the Baja Expedition guides announced we'd be leaving to see the gray whales soon

Dressed in warm layers and rain gear, I was given a life preserver, soft-shell jacket, and knee-high rain boots.

I struggled to carry a ridiculous amount of photography equipment with me as our guide helped us into a small metal boat, known as a panga.

Soon, we were off on a high-speed 30-minute boat ride to the heart of the San Ignacio Lagoon.

When we arrived, the boat slowed down, and moments later, we spotted the smooth back of our first gray whale gliding through the water.

All six of us shot to our feet, cheering at our first sighting, while the captain and guide smiled at our unfiltered joy.

Another whale surfaced closer to our boat while we spotted the spout of a gray whale coming up for a deep breath of air on the other side of the panga.

I wondered how long this kind of luck could last and dreaded that it would end too soon…until I realized we were surrounded by whales.

Two hours later, as our panga floated among these gentle giant gray whales, I sat dazed with joy watching whale after whale surface, spy hop, and breach throughout the lagoon.

I got to have the close encounter of my dreams

Later, our guide told us to splash the water to capture the whales' attention.

I threw myself to the side of the panga while frantically splashing like I might never get this chance again. It worked.

Ever so slowly, an enormous dark mass rose toward the surface of the cloudy water. We reached our arms out as the whale paused. She then poked her nose up, resting on the side of the boat.

I reached toward her, carefully avoiding the barnacles on her dark gray skin, and found a patch on her nose to rub gently.

I found myself cooing endearments at this massive, smooth whale, who seemed to beg for scratches like a golden retriever.

The trip was something my husband and I will never forget

For the remainder of this epic trip, we visited the San Ignacio lagoon six more times and had more close encounters than we could have ever dreamed possible.

We even got another chance to look into the eye of a 40-ton whale, just inches away, as we touched her face.

As we returned home from Cabo San Lucas, my husband and I agreed that this whale-watching trip could never be topped. We're already making plans to visit these special creatures again soon.

An extremely rare gray whale was spotted in the Atlantic. Scientists say it’s only the beginning.

The healthy animal, spotted March 1 off Cape Cod, used the ice-free Northwest Passage to access waters unknown to the species for more than two hundred years.

Grey Whale

Flying along the Massachusetts coast, researchers conducting aerial surveys spotted something they never expected: a gray whale diving and surfacing in a place the species has not been seen for more than two hundred years.

The March 1 discovery was so unlikely that at first, the scientists with the New England Aquarium assumed they were seeing one of the area’s critically endangered right whales , which they regularly monitor. But upon circling back for a closer look, photographs revealed the animal’s mottled gray color and distinctive narrow, triangular head shape.

“My head was spinning a little and I thought I knew what it was, but I wanted independent confirmation,” says Orla O’Brien , associate research scientist with the aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life. When O’Brien showed the images to colleague Kate Laemmle , she said, “’Oh my God, it’s a gray whale.”   (Read about a gray whale that swam halfway across the world.)

“We started getting giddy and saying to each other, this is insane,” O’Brien recalls.

A whale photographed from above.

The researchers’ astonishment is well founded; while gray whales were once plentiful in the Atlantic, they have been extinct since the late 1700s, wiped out largely by whaling. On the Pacific coast, whales bounced back due to legal protections, and the U.S. removed them from the endangered species list in 1994.

Though scientists have reported a handful of gray whale sightings outside of the Pacific in the past 15 years, most took place in the Mediterranean and off southern Africa .

The only other Atlantic Ocean sighting occurred in December 2023, when fishermen reported seeing a gray whale off Miami . Comparing photographs of that whale with the new one confirmed they're the same animal, which appears healthy and well fed.

Almost immediately, questions began to arise. How did the whale—whose sex is still unknown—get there, so far off its natural migration route between Baja California and Alaska? And perhaps most importantly: Could this sighting herald the eventual return of gray whales to the Atlantic after their centuries-long absence?

Polar opposites

The answer to the first question is relatively easy: Melting Arctic ice allowed the gray whale to navigate through the Northwest Passage, which connects the Atlantic with the Pacific through Canada.

“They're going all the way up to the Arctic to feed already, so they're quite close to these newly ice-free areas that would allow them to pass through,” says Joshua Stewart , an assistant professor at Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute who wasn't involved in the new discovery.

But this new ice-free landscape is ultimately not a boon for the whales, whose prey, mostly tiny crustaceans, are dying due to a series of effects from warmer waters. (Read how sea life is suffering in the thinning Arctic.)

Since 2019, this disappearance in prey has killed between 25 and 50 percent of gray whales living in the eastern Pacific, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. Many of those that survived are emaciated , and Stewart suggests “this one gray whale just happened to start looking for food in the other direction.”

Complicating matters, once the Arctic summer ends and gray whales—which can reach up to 40 tons—try to return home, they’ll find the passage iced up, with nowhere to go. That is what probably happened in the fall of 2023, forcing this now-famous gray whale south to the Florida area.

“I don't see this as positive,” says Regina Guazzo, a researcher with the Whale Acoustic Reconnaissance Project at the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific in San Diego.

“Ice melting will impact the Arctic food chain that the whales depend on, and the additional freshwater could mess up the global ocean circulation patterns. This could have huge impacts on weather, temperature, and food supply.” (Learn how the Arctic is heating up.)

A long homecoming

As for whether the whales are recolonizing the Atlantic, “it’s almost definitely going to happen,” Stewart says. “But it’s going to take a lot of trial and error on the part of the whales.”

Not only do the whales need to find new food sources, but they must establish a breeding area and have a population large enough to reproduce, he says. (See an incredible photo of a gray whale swimming close to California beachgoers.)

“So we're talking about stuff that happens on evolutionary time scales, hundreds or even thousands of years.”

To illustrate the problem, Stewart points to another group, western Pacific gray whales, which once migrated along Russia, Korea, Japan, and China, but were considered extinct by the 1970s. The discovery in the 1990s of a small population of the whales off Russia’s Sakhalin Island raised hopes for a rebound, but the intervening 35 years have seen little change , and the animals still number fewer than a hundred.

“It's not something that we will witness with our eyes in real time,” Stewart says, “but it's cool to see what may be the start of it.”
