10 Unique Alberta Train Experiences

It’s no secret that railways played a major role in settling the Prairies and Western Canada. So it’s no surprise that there are so many Alberta train experiences that highlight rail travel’s historical importance—while providing unparalleled views of the province’s unique and varied landscape. Read on to learn how you can ride the rails through the Rockies, witness a mock hold-up aboard a working steam engine, enjoy a luxurious lunch in a century-old dining car and much more!

THE CANADIAN FROM EDMONTON TO JASPER Running parallel and slightly east of the Yellowhead Highway, VIA Rail’s twice-weekly train service (three times a week in summer) from Alberta’s capital to the Rockies affords vistas that you can’t often glimpse from the highway—especially if you are seated in the domed Skyline cars.

JASPER TO THE ROBSON VALLEY Cross the Alberta-British Columbia border on a five-hour round-trip excursion . The outbound train journey passes within sight of Mount Robson, the Canadian Rockies’ highest peak, before stopping in the town of Dunster, famous for its century-old general store. The van ride back to Jasper features a knowledgeable guide plus side trips to wildlife-sighting spots—including Rearguard Falls, often flush with salmon—and other photogenic points of interest.

THE ROCKY MOUNTAINEER FROM CALGARY TO VANCOUVER Another interprovincial journey, this luxurious train ride follows the Canadian Pacific tracks that famously connected the West to the rest of Canada more than 125 years ago. A number of multi-day tours (note that not all are available running westward) feature gourmet food, accommodating onboard hosts, stunning views of undisturbed wilderness—and wildlife—and stops in picturesque towns including Banff and Kamloops, B.C.

ASPEN CROSSING, MOSSLEIGH A variety of summertime train experiences are offered along a stretch of track southeast of Calgary: book a dinner theatre excursion, a circus-themed trip, a champagne brunch or wine-and-cheese ride, and many other three-hour tours. For an even more immersive experience, the Aspen Crossing campground boasts three “Caboose Cabins”—spacious train cars that have been outfitted with modern hotel-style amenities—that can be booked for overnight stays.

HERITAGE PARK HISTORICAL VILLAGE, CALGARY Each Tuesday from the Victoria Day weekend to the end of August, visitors to Heritage Park can experience the timeless glamour of on-train eating during lunch in a vintage rail car. Elegantly restored, the circa-1929 River Forth Canadian Pacific Railway car travels around the park (the dining car is pulled by an antique steam engine) while your party of two or four savours a period-inspired three-course lunch—think trout with potato rosti and summer vegetable ragout—served with wine, naturally.

ALBERTA PRAIRIE RAILWAY, STETTLER Take in the rolling landscape of Central Alberta on this unique historical journey , an approximately five-hour round trip between Stettler and Big Valley aboard a train pulled by one of either a 1920 or 1944 steam locomotive, or a 1958 diesel engine. The excursion includes oft-changing on-board entertainment (ranging from murder mysteries to teddy bear–themed ride) as well as a buffet dinner in Big Valley. And be on the lookout for bandits: the railway is a known target of the “Reynolds Raiders” gang of (pretend) outlaws.

FORT EDMONTON PARK, EDMONTON This unique attraction traces the evolution of Edmonton from early 19th-century Hudson’s Bay Company trading post to bustling modern municipality. A restored steam train travels the southern perimeter of the 64-hectare site, taking visitors from the main gates to the 1846 Fort, one of four unique “streets” that recreate important eras in Edmonton’s history. Even more rail-riding fun can be had aboard the park’s turn-of-the-century streetcars, and inside its 1920s freight shed, which features a sizeable model-train display.

GALT HISTORIC RAILWAY PARK, WARNER COUNTY Built in 1890 by Sir Alexander Galt and his son Elliot (the duo had earlier co-founded the town of Lethbridge), this train station originally straddled the Canada-U.S. border and acted as a customs depot. Fully restored in the early 2000s, it’s now home to a collection of artifacts from the early years of rail travel in Southern Alberta.

FOOTLOOSE CABOOSE LODGE, TOFIELD Less than an hour’s drive southeast of Edmonton sits a quartet of decommissioned rail cars that have been turned into a small inn and restaurant . The Mount Lefroy dining car is the main attraction, featuring throwback decor and a weekend brunch menu designed for insatiable appetites. The “king sized” hobo omelette with potatoes and smoked sausage will keep you chugging along all day.

HIGH LEVEL BRIDGE STREETCAR, EDMONTON Each summer, the Edmonton Radial Railway Society offers trips on a historic streetcar line between the Strathcona Streetcar Barn & Museum and Jasper Plaza at 109 Street and 100 Avenue. Currently, three unique trams—including a century-old car salvaged and restored at a cost of $151,000—run along the three-kilometre line, which crosses 49 metres above the North Saskatchewan River.

Dreaming of an Alberta Rail Vacation? Where jagged crags rise against an expansive sky, golden bears lumber along the road and placid, turquoise lakes reflect towering pines.

The landscape here practically defines rugged, especially in the two sprawling national parks on alberta’s western edge. , in the east, you’ll find windswept prairies where modern-day cowboys still embody the old west. , alberta introduction.

Banff and Jasper National Parks boast some of the Rockies’ most pristine scenery, which you can explore on a guided heli-hike above the timberline or on a white-water rafting trip down the Athabasca River. For a more restful tour, drive past the mirror-like lakes and soaring peaks of the Icefields Parkway or take a narrated boat ride on the glacial-blue waters of Maligne Lake. In eastern Alberta, hunt for dinosaur bones and fossils in the dusty stones of the Canadian Badlands or visit the chuck wagon races, rodeo and midway of Calgary Stampede. This is 'the greatest outdoor show on earth' for a reason.

2023 Year in Review

A look back at all of the highlights from our 2023 season and what to expect in 2024.

This has been the tour I dreamt of doing. Along the route, the Rocky Mountaineer was the best in service! They know how to wow the client and are good at it. I have glowing accolades for them. Everything in Alberta was amazing. Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff ... all those stops were incredible. We will arrive home on Saturday at about 3 pm. While there’s no place like home, our journey with Canada Rail Vacations was where it all began in September 2017. Thank you Martin, for operating a tour company that fit our needs....and then some. You gave us options to customize this trip to meet our wishes. Thanks to your staff who know their stuff and coddled me along the way, especially Spencer. And a huge shout out to our Tour Guide Julian. Absolutely knowledgeable about the routes we took and of the trains going through the spiral tunnels. Julian really made those four days of private tours so worth it for us. You have in us four happy clients who will now recommend Canada Rail Vacations to others, plus we have amazing memories. Thanks Martin! Lori, Brian, Ruby and Rudy, Virginia, USA (The Canadian Adventurer)
We just returned home from our recent trans-Canada train adventure and wanted to pass along our thoughts on the holiday. We arrived in Vancouver and stayed at the Fairmont, which was lovely. All of the Fairmont accommodations were outstanding. The Rocky Mountaineer was exceptional! The aesthetic, the staff, the food... everything was amazing. The staff in particular on the train were outstanding, I was so touched, as a vegan they went out of their way to accommodate me and went so far above and beyond (I never would imagine that level of service!). We were also so pleasantly surprised by the Delta Kamloops, our room was gorgeous and the location was great. Of course, the scenery in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper was incredible, and we so often found ourselves speechless. Both of our tours in Banff and Lake Louise with Julian were outstanding. He was so knowledgeable and kept us entertained every moment of the tour! All in all, an incredible experience from booking to the actual trip. Thank you for a memorable holiday! Stephanie, Hovan & Doris K., Toronto, Canada (The Canadian Adventurer)
Now safely back in Cyprus and settled in again after a great holiday with you in August. Big thanks to Canada Rail Vacations for leaving the excellent wine at the Sutton Place Hotel in Vancouver, it certainly dampened down the trail dust! Shame you couldn't join us to drink it! You have a great team from the ladies who sorted us out before we left the hotels in Vancouver and Banff, to the staff waving us off and those welcoming us at each stop. The entire trip was memorable on so many levels, but an understated highlight for me was standing at the water's edge of Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, and gazing in wonder at the Walcott Quarry/Burgess Shale! I read about and studied the fossils but to see it in real life was awesome! Anthony, Cyprus (Rockies Circle Essentials)
Now that my wife and I have rested after our very enjoyable tour of Canada and are back into our normal routine we would not like the time to pass without passing on to Canada Rail staff our sincere thanks for making all the reservations and organizing the itinerary.  Suffice it to say that things went like clockwork obviously due in large part to the experienced and dedicated Canada Rail Vacations staff. We will happily refer you to any of our friends and acquaintances who are considering travelling in Canada and will look to you next time we choose to travel in Canada. Many thanks to all! Doug & Norma L, Farrer, Australia (The Canadian Trip of a Lifetime)
Thanks for helping make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience for my daughter and myself. We had many planned, and unplanned, adventures and have many memories. Cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff on both VIA and Rocky Mountaineer. There were some hiccups with scheduling but the graciousness of the staff was superb. Our hotels were very good and thanks for the special gift in Vancouver. We also used your suggestions for touring the city, spot on! Will most likely never tour Canada again as my husband and I toured from Toronto East, but I am recommending Canada Rail Vacations to my family and friends. Thanks again. Judith & Cameron C, Alabama, USA (The Canadian Adventurer)

Enjoy Banff and Canada via rail tours

BANFF, Alberta – Why drive when you can take a leisurely train trip through some of the most magical vistas on earth?

Taking a Rocky Mountaineer train tour is one of the best ways to enjoy the Canadian Rockies as you wind your way through mountain settings that defy the imagination. With the Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail rail tours, all the navigation is in someone else’s hands, leaving you free to gaze, oogle, gasp, and just generally take in the vast expanses that unfurl before you as you sit in the exquisite comfort of an elegant railway car.

As if the 360 degree panoramic views aren’t enough, dining on the Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail affords you its own magnificence, with menus concocted by world-class chefs. Imagine the luxury of enjoying an international cuisine in a setting that takes your breath (but not your appetite) away.

Jane and Richard Sembrose of St. Paul, Minnesota took the Rocky Mountaineer to get their fair share of Banff and Jasper National Park’s spectacular settings when they wanted to let someone else worry about the navigation. They had the time of their life saying, “We decided to take a rail tour of the Canadian Rockies and it was the most relaxing vacation we’d ever taken. We delighted in the amazing scenery, found ourselves eating some of the best meals ever, and stayed at some really terrific hotels along the way. Our tour was something to remember forever.”

Taking a rail tour Canadian Rockies style is in actuality, an adventure vacation. Choose the package most suitable for you and you’ll find yourself exploring the vast beauty of Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, the Kootenays, and a plethora of other landmarks in between.

Canadian Rockies rail tours provide a wide variety of options, from economy packages to luxury accommodations. Once off the train, tours provide you with the flexibility to stay in Banff’s economy hotels or its world class resorts. Allan Hemmings from Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland made a great point when he said, “Why on earth would anyone want to see the Rockies any other way? I had a ball on this trip, meeting interesting people, dining like a king, and seeing some of the most astounding sites I’ve every seen in all my travels. It was like being in a moving first class hotel!”

As if this isn’t enough, create the ultimate Canadian Rockies vacation by combining your Rocky Mountaineer rail trip with a luxury Alaskan Cruise. The options are there for the taking! Ginger and Don Ryan of Troy, New York celebrated their 50th anniversary by making this combination. When I spoke with Don after his trip he said, “Traveling by VIA rail was our gift to ourselves for this memorable anniversary. I can’t think of any better way to celebrate than by touring the Canadian Rockies by train.”

Aspen Crossing – Scenic Train Excursions in the Alberta Prairies

August 13, 2019 By Matthew G. Bailey 2 Comments

Aspen Crossing Alberta

Last updated: March 20th, 2020

Located less than an hour southeast of Calgary in Mossleigh, Alberta, Aspen Crossing offers guests the chance to experience a train ride through the beautiful Alberta prairies while enjoying themed excursions, delicious food, music, and more. It’s become a very popular day-trip getaway for Calgarians and has quickly become a major tourist destination in Southern Alberta.

Fun Things To Do in Calgary

Since Aspen Crossing is located just 45 minutes from Calgary, it has become a very popular fun thing to do for Calgarians and those visiting the city. After all, it offers the chance to escape the city and be immersed in the prairie landscapes that Alberta is known for.

12 Different Train Excursions

Aspen Crossing has 12 different themed train excursions available throughout the year, including Champagne Brunch, Sunday Special, Dinner Theatre, Prairie Tour, High Tea, Twilight Tour, Ales on Rails, Wine & Cheese, Circus Train, and Meals in the Field (There’s also a Canada Day version on July 1st). In addition, they offer the Train of Terror for Halloween and their incredibly popular Aspen Crossing Polar Express, which happens around the Christmas holidays. This is one of the top things to do in Calgary with kids during the winter months. You can see the full Aspen Crossing schedule here.

Champagne Brunch Train Ride

While all the tours looked tempting, we joined them for one of their Champagne Brunch tours. We arrived an hour early so that we could see everything else they offer before the train ride began. After all, Aspen Crossing offers much more than a scenic train excursion. They also have a garden centre, an escape room, a gift shop, two restaurants, and even a campground, which offers tent camping, RV camping, and three truly unique and beautiful train caboose rooms.

As the departure time approached, we all gathered around to listen to the conductor talk about Alberta’s history and about the train we’d be riding that day. I noticed that the ages of those going on the train varied a lot. I saw young couples enjoying a date, young families with kids, and seniors as well. After the talk, we all boarded the train and were shown to our reserved tables. The waitresses quickly came around to give everyone coffee, tea, and water, before the train began to go down the track. There were about 7 rail cars in total, and they’re all beautiful in their own way. My favourite rail car was the Milo car, as it had such a retro feel to it. However, I also loved the Saloon car, which is where the bar is, as well as the open car, which is a great place to go for views of the surrounding landscapes. Then again, the candy caboose is great as well. Who doesn’t love candy!?

Once the train was in motion, we began the buffet. What an incredible brunch. Much better than most buffets we’ve had. We had waffles, chicken, omelets, meatballs, perogies, bacon, greek salad, caesar salad, hashbrowns, and more. Then there was the dessert, which consisted of macaroons, cheesecake bites, various cakes, and fruit. I especially loved the meatballs, perogies, and the waffles, which I paired with the fried chicken and syrup. So good!

Oh, and let’s not forget the champagne! Cheers!

things to do in calgary canada

Each train ride is about 2 hours or more, taking passengers through prairie farmland, as well as the town of Mossleigh and past some historical grain elevators. Passengers can walk around the various rail cars while admiring the views passing them by. There’s also live music, including a banjo and a guitar. Then, there’s the train robbery, which adds some entertainment to the experience. As you can imagine, the kids really love it. As the train stops, bandits get on and kidnap the marshall. They then ask for money, which is given to local charities. Once they get off the train, the marshall and the “train police” start a gun battle to retrieve the money.

Much More Than Train Rides – Unique Things To Do in Calgary

As mentioned at the beginning, there’s much more to Aspen Crossing than the train ride. In fact, it started off as a tree farm and still remains a place where people can buy plants and flowers. However, now they offer much more, including two restaurants, one of which is housed inside an 1887 Pullman rail car that was once used as Prime Minister John Diefenbaker’s campaign rail car during the mid-1950s. After that, it was used as Edmonton’s famous Side Track café, which hosted various musicians such as Sarah MacLachlan, The Barenaked Ladies, Blue Rodeo, and K.D. Lang. Now, it’s here, serving up a new menu each season along with a beautiful patio in the summer months. There’s also the century-old Bergquist House , which offers both a tavern as well as an escape room!

Aspen Crossing Campground

When we were there, the 85-site campground looked close to full. It’s very popular with travellers and with people seeking a fully-serviced campground that offers a slice of wilderness along with modern comforts such as restaurants and a unique train ride. There are also three group shelters to accommodate corporate bookings, family reunions, or any other group gathering. Other amenities include laundry facilities, modern showers, flushing toilets, group camping, fully serviced sites, sani-dump stations. Plus, the kids love running out to greet the train going by!

sleep in a train

Aspen Crossing Caboose Cabins

Plus, for those seeking a truly unique experience, they offer three different Caboose Cabins. It’s your chance to sleep in a vintage railcar while the interior design provides the luxury of a modern hotel. You even get your own deck right outside for lounging in the sun as well as a fire pit, perfect for late-night marshmallow roasting and creating new memories with friends, family or even colleagues.

Talk about a “glamping” experience.

  • Things To Do in Calgary

While Aspen Crossing is very popular with Calgarians and those visiting Canada’s third-biggest city, it’s also perfect for those looking for things to do in Okotoks, Lethbridge, or any of the other towns around the area. Whether you’re travelling across the province or just visiting Calgary, Aspen Crossing is a great place for the whole family. Whether you’re looking to just jump on the train for a scenic ride or partake in something like the Champagne Brunch, they have something for everyone.

All Trains Depart And Return To Stettler, Alberta

Alberta Prairie's popular experiences have everything. Including a rail excursion on board a vintage passenger train lasting between three & one-half and six hours, a full course buffet style meal at destination, entertainment, sightseeing and, with a few exceptions a train robbery. These trips are great for children and families. The destinations for Alberta Prairie excursions in 2023 are the Village of Big Valley and our very own Country Hideaway at Warden Junction. Warden at one time was a junction point between two railways - north south through Stettler and east west from west of Rocky Mountain House to Hanna. Banff  .

Banff is one of the most popular destinations for anyone interested in train travel from Calgary to Vancouver. After transferring to Banff from Calgary, tourists can take the Rocky Mountaineer to Vancouver. Located in Alberta, the resort town of Banff has a little something for everyone, from boutiques and restaurants to spas and outdoor activities. Its crown jewel is Banff National Park, home to black bears, grizzlies, cougars, wolves, moose and elk. Bighorn sheep have even been known to hide among the park's rocky outcroppings.

If you love the outdoors, consider a visit to nearby Lake Minnewanka, which has lake cruises, SCUBA excursions and a scenic drive that leads you back toward Banff and its soaring mountain peaks. Ride the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain, where you'll find some of the best views of the town below. Finish off your visit with a trip to Banff's natural mineral water springs, which offer pristine views of the valley below.

#2 Travel tip: Travel to the Rockies

Travel to the Rockies Calgary is a great starting point for many Canadian Rockies trips. You can head straight to Banff National Park from Calgary Airport — the drive takes less than two hours.

Jasper

Many Calgary to Vancouver tours include a stop in Jasper, the perfect place for wilderness enthusiasts. The alpine town has shimmering lakes, natural hot springs, hiking trails and more, providing almost limitless opportunities to stay active on your vacation. While you're in town, don't miss Jasper National Park, home to ancient glaciers, tranquil forests and snow-capped mountain peaks.

As you explore the park, don't be surprised if you encounter elk, moose, wolves and other wildlife. Jasper National Park is also a popular place for birdwatching, so keep an eye out for ravens, eagles, geese, ducks, owls and other winged friends. After exploring the outdoors, head into town for a bite to eat. Jasper has everything from hole-in-the-wall cafés to Michelin-rated restaurants.

Lake Louise

A highlight of Banff National Park is world-renown Lake Louise. This glacier-fed lake is known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters. During the summer, popular activities include fishing and canoeing. Lake Louise is also known for its extensive trail system, which includes Lake Agnes Trail, Plain of Six Glaciers Trail and the Big Beehive.

When colder temperatures set in, Lake Louise transforms into a popular ski resort. Due to its location, Lake Louise has a longer ski season than any other place in Canada. It’s the ideal destination for anyone who loves whooshing down the slopes on a mound of fresh powder. If you're interested in something a little more low-key, check out Samson Mall or the upscale shops at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Hotel.

Emerald Lake

Nestled in Yoho National Park, Emerald Lake stands as one of the most popular destinations in the Canadian Rockies. The lake doesn't thaw out until around June, so July and August are the most popular times to visit. If you visit during the summer, you can expect to see turquoise waters dotted with boats, kayaks and canoes. As the summer season comes to a close, the water becomes less colourful due to the addition of sediment from the melting glacier.

During the winter, Emerald Lake has excellent skiing and snowshoeing, but many travellers prefer to relax inside a comfortable lodge while the snow falls around them. The area is home to several restaurants, including a bistro and two casual cafés, ensuring everyone in your group can find something they enjoy. While you're in town, don't forget to visit nearby Lake Louise.
