A durable golf travel bag is essential for protecting your clubs and giving you peace of mind whether you’re traveling by car or airplane to one of the world’s best courses. While there are plenty of storage options for safely traveling with your clubs, we tested the best golf travel bags based on qualities like durability, portability, and capacity.

Our top pick for the best golf travel bag overall is the Club Glove Last Bag Large Pro golf travel bag, which thoroughly impressed us. The bag is made with durable nylon material with plenty of padding to ensure that your clubs make it to your destination safely. We were able to fit clubs, clothes, golf balls, and other accessories into the bag without any issues. If you’re looking for a hardshell case or a budget-friendly bag, we found options for a variety of categories to fit the needs of all golfers.

Best Overall

Club glove last bag large pro.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

It’s built to last with single webbing reinforcement and burst-proof construction.

The bag is on the heavier side.

The Club Glove Last Bag Large Pro golf travel bag is one of the best-made travel bags we've seen. Fit for a weekend golf getaway , the bag can comfortably fit a set of clubs in a standard-sized carrier, golf balls, shirts, shorts, towels, and two pairs of golf shoes between the main compartment and two exterior pockets. Despite the 45-pound weight after packing, we thought the balance was evenly distributed throughout the bag and the inline skate wheels rolled smoothly and felt sturdy due to the plastic wheelbase that is designed for high-impact travel. We noted the high-quality feel of the water-resistant nylon material that adds durability to the bag, which truly feels like it will last a lifetime.

The bag is outfitted with self-lubricating YKK zippers and ITW Nexus buckles that come from a manufacturer that makes military-grade hoops, locks, and buckles. An aluminum stiff arm to reinforce the padded protection for impact during traveling is included. We flew with this bag twice in one month of testing and it still looks like it just came out of the box. The durability, functionality, and sleek design of the Club Glove Last Bag Large Pro Golf Travel Bag make it well worth the price for golfers that are planning to travel with their clubs.

Best Budget

Tourtrek tc pro travel cover.

Dick's Sporting Goods

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Design 4.8 /5
  • Durability 4.8 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

It feels lightweight whether it’s being pushed or pulled over a variety of surfaces.

The interior of the bag could be bigger.

The TourTrek TC PRO Travel Cover offers an abundance of protective padding and excellent portability. We think this bag is an excellent value with its durable design featuring an interior space that’s roomy enough for a set of golf clubs and two mesh pockets for accessories, as well as an exterior pocket for a pair of shoes. The cushioning is very generous and the bag feels protective and sturdy with 360-degree padding to keep your golf clubs safe whether you’re traveling by air or car. The handles are padded as well, making them comfortable to hold onto while lifting or rolling the bag. And it includes a lock and key set for an additional layer of security and peace of mind.

Weighing 6.6 pounds, this golf travel bag is lightweight and takes up less of the allotted 50-pound weight maximum that most airlines limit checked bags . While we think the interior could be a little bit bigger, this golf travel bag has high-quality features that lead us to believe it will protect golf clubs and last a long time with prolonged use, too.

Most spacious, caddydaddy golf club travel cover with wheels.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

The interior has tons of room for clothing or shoes in addition to golf clubs.

It has straps that are slightly uncomfortable.

The CaddyDaddy First Class Premium Padded Golf Club Travel Cover with Wheels has tons of space for not only clubs, but golf shoes, clothing, and anything else you would ever need on a golf trip as well. Since the golf travel bag weighs just 10 pounds, golfers can pack up to 40 pounds of clubs, clothes, and other accessories before reaching the general 50-pound checked bag limit for most airlines. We loved the spacious side pockets for toiletries and golf shoes, as well as the well-placed straps that can be tucked in during traveling to prevent damage.

The weight of the golf bag is mostly evenly balanced, and the wheels and handles make it easy to carry and maneuver; however, the top handle could have been a little more comfortable. The materials and the zippers of the bag feel durable and well-made. We're confident that this bag would last a very long time and would not be something you'd have to worry about replacing anytime soon.

Best Softside

Sun mountain clubglider meridian travel cover.

  • Capacity 4.8 /5

There are fold-out legs in the center with wheels that make rolling the bag even easier.

Travelers might want to consider a stiff arm for added protection.

For golfers looking for a simple yet functional golf travel bag, the Sun Mountain ClubGlider Meridian Travel Cover is a solid option. The design of the bag includes everything you need for hassle-free packing and travel experience, including a spacious interior for a cart or stand bag, two exterior pockets, and a pull-out leg mechanism with an additional pair of wheels besides the ones at the bottom of the bag. We found it very easy to collapse the legs in and out and the bag rolled a lot more smoothly than expected.

The high-quality, durable feel of the handles on the front, bottom, and middle of the bag equally impressed us by making it a breeze to lift and maneuver comfortably. While the nylon exterior material and padding feel sturdy and durable, the bag would likely only protect golf clubs against low-impact hits.

Most Durable

Club glove collegiate travel cover with stiff arm.

PGA Tour Superstore

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 4.9 /5

It comes with a stiff arm to protect the heads of the clubs.

Packing the clubs was a tight fit with the length.

Traveling by air with golf clubs can be risky considering the potential for rough handling that comes with checking in luggage, but the Club Glove Last Bag Collegiate Travel Cover with Stiff Arm is made of high-quality materials and includes a stiff arm that is designed to protect gear from hard impact. The adjustable stiff arm is made of nylon plastic and lightweight aluminum, and although it doesn’t take up much room, we had to jostle the bag to get the stiff arm in with the golf clubs. With the smaller-sized interior, we appreciated the two large exterior pockets that can fit items like shoes, clothing, or sunscreen. The fully-packed bag is comfortable to carry with top, bottom, and middle straps that evenly distribute the weight of the lengthy bag and we liked how it can stand up on its own.

After flying with this Club Glove design, there weren’t any scuffs or damage to the bag. The exterior of the bag is made of water-resistant ballistic nylon fabric and the backing has single webbing reinforcement — a common fabric used for climbing, military gear, and parachutes.

Best All-in-one

Caddydaddy constrictor 2 travel cover.

This bag includes large pockets that can store all of your extra gear.

The sides aren't padded, so you may want to add cushioning to protect your clubs.

For frequent travelers or golfers who want a bag that can store even their bulkiest gear, this CaddyDaddy bag is the perfect option. Not only is the bag itself large enough to store all of your clubs, but it also features side pockets that are big enough to pack your shoes and even extra clothing. Even with all of this space, the bag still doesn't feel bulky.

Made of thick rubber and nylon, we feel confident this bag won't break, tear, or otherwise fall apart. The fabric is thick and well-stitched. To give you added peace of mind, it comes with a one-year full replacement warranty so you can test it for yourself.

The Details: 27.5 x 18.9 x 14.5 inches | 9 pounds | Wheeled | Nylon and rubber

Best Portability

Izzo golf high roller.

  • Durability 4 /5

There are six wheels on the bottom of the bag so it can be rolled upright.

It feels slightly top-heavy.

The Izzo High Roller golf bag impressed us with how easy it was to transport by wheeling or carrying it. The six wheels on the bottom of the bag make it possible to push or pull it while standing upright. In addition, the bag can collapse down to just 12 inches for easy storage while traveling or at home.

While the bag felt a little top-heavy while being wheeled through an airport, the handles made it easy to lift and hold onto while rolling the bag. Even if the bag were to fall over, it has a solid amount of protective padding on the inside and outside, and it’s made of tear-resistant nylon that feels sturdy and durable. The interior of the bag is large enough for golf clubs and extra shirts, and the exterior pocket is big enough for a pair of golf shoes, but it was a tighter fit than we would’ve preferred. We think the Izzo High Roller bag is perfect for golfers who could benefit from having exceptional portability and durability while traveling through airports.

We had our expert product testers and golfers take 19 golf travel bags on the road to find out which ones will keep your clubs safe whether you’re flying or driving. Our testers evaluated the bags by flying, driving, walking around, and carrying the bags and rating various attributes on a scale from one to five based on capacity, design, durability, and portability.

Our testers packed their golf clubs into the travel bags and noted how easy it was to place the clubs into them and if there was room leftover for clothes, shoes, golf balls, or other accessories between the main compartment and any pockets. While packing the bags, we checked the quality of the zippers and buckles, as well as how much padding there was and if it felt sufficient for protecting the clubs. The bags with the highest ratings for capacity were spacious with extra room leftover, and the best performing bags for design had thoughtful and intuitive features that had golfers in mind and made packing easier.

After packing up the travel bags, our traveling golfers tested portability by carrying and wheeling the bag to get a feel for how it maneuvers. The top performing bags for portability were exceptionally easy to lift and wheel with comfortable, padded straps and handles. Durability of the travel bags was tested when they were transported by airplane or car. Our five-star ratings for durability went to the travel bags that had no damage to the exterior or items on the interior after being used and gave us confidence that they would hold up well with prolonged use. The testers determined that the bags with the best value performed as or better than expected given the price, especially pricier bags that needed robust justification for the cost.

Other Golf Travel Bags We Liked

While there were plenty of well-performing golf travel bags, there were a few listed below that almost made our list of best golf travel bags but fell short during testing.

Samsonite Golf Deluxe 3 Piece Travel Set : The bag is functional and has a sleek design, but there isn’t much padding and the zippers are plastic, which made us question the durability of the bag while flying.

Samsonite Hard Side Golf Case : The hardshell feels durable, but there isn’t much give so it was a tight fit to get the golf clubs in, and the case is difficult to store since it can’t break down.

Amazon Basics Soft-sided Golf Travel Bag : This bag is very affordable, but has an unstructured bottom, so it can't stand up on its own.

SKB Cases ATA Deluxe Standard Hard Travel Golf Case : This case was built to withstand a lot of rough handling and includes TSA-approved locks, but can become heavy due to its thick plastic.

Bag Boy Golf T10 Hard Top Cover : For minimalist golfers, this simple bag fits just what you need, but won't give you room for extra equipment or gear.

Other Golf Gear You May Need

When you're heading out for a long day on the course, be sure you're prepared with everything you need from sunscreen to golf gloves to ensure you stay completely focused on enjoying the game.

Titleist Players Flex Men’s Golf Glove: These high-performance gloves are a classic for a reason. The cabretta leather is silky smooth, offering optimal comfort and breathability, so your hands won't sweat mid-swing. Plus, the Satin Net materials across the knuckles provide plenty of flexibility.

Peter Millar Solid Performance Jersey Polo : If you're someone who gets caught up in the game and forgets to reapply sunscreen, this golf shirt is for you. Not only is it made of moisture-wicking materials in 13 vibrant colors, but it provides UPF 50+ sun protection as well, so you can stay safe without even thinking about it.

Adidas Men's Tour360 22 Golf Shoes : These shoes provide excellent cushioning to keep you comfortable all day long, and still feature 11 metal spikes for traction and grip. It's also designed with a roomy toe box and heel reinforcement to ensure your foot stays in place.

Wilson Sleeveless Club Dress : This stylish golf dress is made with four-way stretch fabric that is breathable and feels good even in extreme heat. It also features hidden and roomy pockets so you can store any essentials you may want ready and on-hand.

Tips for Buying a Golf Travel Bag

Consider buying a stiff arm .

Whether you’re buying a hardshell or softside golf travel bag, a stiff arm can add another layer of protection to your golf clubs. A stiff arm is usually an adjustable metal rod with a plastic disc at the the top of it that extends longer than the driver or longest golf club. The rod is placed into a golf bag to absorb the hit if the bag is tossed around and prevent the clubs from being directly impacted.

Hardshell versus softside

When looking for a travel golf bag, you'll want to look at durability and padding. Both hardshell and softside golf travel bags can prevent damage to your golf clubs while traveling and are a worthwhile investment for golfers that travel several times per year. A hardshell suitcase can get more scuffed than a softside golf bag, but you might not need to buy a stiff arm since a plastic case offers a more structured layer of protection. Whereas a softside bag might need extra protection like a stiff arm, it’s easier to store a soft bag than a bulky hardshell case that can’t be folded down. Some airlines will only cover damaged or lost clubs that are in a hardshell case, so be sure to check with the airline to find out the policies.

Look at the types of wheels

From upright wheels to inline skate wheels, golf bags are created with a variety of options to make transport easier for all types of players. You should look at wheels that will smoothly and easily roll over different terrains without adding weight to the overall bag.

You’ll want to make sure your golf bag and clubs can fit in a travel bag. While you don’t want to squeeze your clubs inside, you won’t want them swimming in a roomy case either. If there is extra room in your travel bag, stuffing the sides with clothes or towels can help keep everything in place, especially if you’re flying. If your club heads can be removed and covered, that can further prevent damage to your gear.

Every airline will be different but most follow the same policies as regular check-in luggage regarding weight and size limitations. The weight limit for check-in luggage, including golf clubs, is almost always 50 pounds or less. If your bag weighs more, there will likely be a surcharge fee. Airlines also have different restrictions and policies for packing golf shoes or balls in your bag, and coverage for lost golf bags can be dependent on the type of golf travel bag. For peace of mind, consider securing an AirTag holder with a tracker to your golf bag.

Generally, airlines do not pay travelers for damaged golf clubs. Some, like American Airlines , may compensate if the equipment traveled in a hard-sided case that is visibly damaged and was properly packed, but you should always check your specific airline's policies before flying to guarantee safe and secure travel.

You don’t have to be a seasoned traveler to pack like one. Sometimes just the swap of a suitcase or addition of a bag clip can make all the difference to mitigate the stress that comes in preparing for an approaching golf trip. We asked Golf Digest editors to share their favorite travel products, so you can focus on your game, not your luggage. RELATED: 7 range accessories you need for your next grind session

“The lifetime warranty on this suitcase is no joke, I had one break at Augusta National and the company overnighted me a new one. I can fit three weeks of stuff into the larger carry-on and it’ll go into the overhead for most airlines.”

Pull the stand out and your bag becomes basically weightless. Ok, not weightless, but I forget about how heavy the bag is until I pop my rental car's trunk. It's incredibly convenient: The gap between the legs and the bottom wheels is properly spaced out so that I don't have an issue on escalators in airports. Best Premium Golf Travel Bag

golf travel balls

  • Won’t have to bend down to pack/unpack
  • High quality fabric
  • Wheels are easy to use

SunMountain makes some great travel bags and traditional golf bags. We love the ClubGlifer Meridian because of the features that it offers that other manufacturers are not offering.

The ClubGlider has padding at the top of the bag to help keep the clubs protected. This is a soft storage bag, but it has 1200 Denier polyester fabric that will keep it in great shape for years to come.

The most interesting part about this golf travel bag is the pivoting caster wheels and leg mechanism .

The bag will rais up off the ground so that you can pack it and unpack it without being on the ground.

Who really wants to be on the floor of a hotel room unpacking their bag?

The SunMountain comes equipped with internal straps to keep things from moving around during your travel, and the legs will retract and fit into their molded tray.

The legs and wheels are very high quality and should not cause any issues long term. If you want a high-quality bag that will save your back and clubs, the ClubGlider is an excellent choice.

Samsonite Golf Hard Sided Travel Cover Case

Best Hard Cover

golf travel balls

  • Protects clubs very well
  • Easy to glide around
  • Takes up alot of room when not in use
  • Will not accommodate very large golf bags

Samsonite has been a leading name in the luggage industry for many years. It turns out they also make some great golf bags for traveling. The Samsonite Golf Hard Sided Travel Cover Case is the best option if you want a hard shell storage case for your clubs.

The entire construction is lightweight and durable ABS. With this type of travel cover, you will have plenty of storage and protection. The one downside to the hardstyle case is that if your golf bag is large, it may not fit. Where you can stretch a soft case, you won’t be able to do so with the hard ones.

The Samsonite has wheels and is quite tall as well. If you play with a longer driver, you won’t have any issues fitting it inside this one.

golf Travel Bags Buying Guide

Knowing your options is only half the battle. Now you must pick a golf bag for traveling that works for you, your style, and your clubs.

We have put together a few questions that should help you narrow down your decision just a bit.

What Is The Difference Between Hardcover And Softcover Golf Travel Bags?

A hard case golf travel bag has a protective shell around it. This shell is designed to keep the clubs inside protected from any kind of damage.

We know that luggage is thrown around when you travel. If you have expensive golf clubs that may be hard to replace, the hard case does a great job of keeping everything intact.

The problem with the hard case is that it is heavy, and you can’t fold it to put it away. If you have space in your home, this won’t be an issue, but if you are already short on space, you do not want to figure out how to store a hard shell travel bag.

As long as the softcover travel bag you choose has padding and protective coverings, you should not have to worry about golf clubs breaking. These bags do a great job of protecting your clubs even if they are not quite as sturdy as the hard cover cases.

Will A Cart Bag Fit In A Travel Golf Bag?

A cart bag will sometimes not fit in a travel bag. You have a few options here. One of the first things you can do is purchase a carry or stand bag that is more lightweight and use it for traveling.

Another option is to measure the cart bag and the travel bag and see if it will fit.

Some of the larger golf travel bags can accommodate a cart bag but the problem will be the weight. By the time you add a cart bag and all of your belongings to the travel bags, chances are the pricing is going to get a bit high.

Do All Golf Travel Bags Have Wheels?

Not all golf bags for travel will have wheels. Some are just going to have a single carry strap that you can use to lug the clubs around.

Certainly, these are the less expensive type because carrying your clubs in this way is quite difficult. If you are looking for the best golf travel bag, make sure to include wheels on your list of must haves.

Should I store Shoes And Other Things In My Golf Travel Bag?

People love to stuff their travel golf bags full of extra equipment and gear. There is usually quite a bit of room in these bags, so that is completely understandable, but you should be careful as to how you do this.

Make sure that nothing but soft goods are put anywhere near the clubhead. Also, make sure that all items are strapped down or tucked inside the bag. If you leave a golf club outside of your bag but within the travel bag, there is a high potential that it could break during travel.

Hopefully, our choices for the best golf travel bag have helped you narrow down your options. There are many good travel bags out there, but it is important to choose something that has the fabric, storage, and the durability that you need for your travel schedule.

The Caddy Daddy gives golfers great club protection, an easy way to carry the bag, lightweight design, and lots of storage. This is a travel bag that you will likely have for many years before needing to replace it.

  • SOURCE Golf Galaxy, Walmart
  • PERMISSION Permission given by Golf Galaxy, Walmart

The one constant in golf is that every player wants more distance, even if it’s only a few yards. Your golf ball is a huge factor in how far your tee shots fly. If you want to hit bombs and don’t mind sacrificing a little performance in other areas, check out these nine balls that boast serious distance.

Top Golf Balls for Distance

We’ve studied almost every golf ball, and tested a bunch of them first-hand, which made picking our list of the best golf balls for distance much easier.

Not every long-distance ball is a great fit for every distance-seeking player. We considered all aspects of a ball and all types of golfers, from low-handicap players all the way to beginners.

If you’re not sure how the construction, cover, and other variables impact your golf ball’s performance – and which traits likely benefit your game the most – don’t worry, we cover all of that later on.

For now, here are the nine best golf balls for distance of 2023.

Titleist Velocity

Titleist Velocity golf ball

Titleist Velocity golf ball

  • DESCRIPTION Titleist Velocity golf ball
  • SOURCE Golf Galaxy
  • PERMISSION Permission given by Golf Galaxy

The Titleist Velocity is incredibly versatile and appeals to a wide range of players. We’re awarding Velocity the number one spot for distance because it churns out all the distance you need and delivers the quality you’d expect from Titleist.

The Velocity’s 65 compression rating caters to both moderate and fast swing speed players. The Velocity's high launch allows you to hit tee shots that run, and approach shots that stick to the green. Players with faster swing speeds will be pleasantly surprised by how low the Velocity can be flighted.

The Velocity doesn't perform like a Pro V1, but that’s not why you’re looking at this genre of golf ball. However, you can expect the same durability and quality that Titleist is known for. As a true distance ball, keep your expectations for backspin low. The Velocity is a high-end distance ball that helps you keep up, or get past, the other golfers in your foursome.

Bridgestone e9 Long Drive

Bridgestone e9 Long Drive golf ball

Bridgestone e9 Long Drive golf ball

  • DESCRIPTION Bridgestone e9 Long Drive golf ball

We couldn’t wait any longer to tell you about the new Bridgestone e9 Long Drive ball. If you’re looking for sheer distance, how can you beat the first ball specifically designed for World Long Drive competition?

The outer portion of the core is made for maximum ball speed, while the softer inner part of the core drives ideal spin, keeping you on the grid. All that, however, is just one core, a unit Bridgestone has equipped with Extreme Gradational core technology.

You can even expect a nice soft feel around the greens, just don’t expect top-tier stopping power.

At the very least, the e9 Long Drive is a fun ball to test out and see just how much more distance you can squeeze out, and if there’s enough greenside performance to outweigh those gains.

Maxfli TriFli

Maxfli TriFli golf ball

Maxfli TriFli golf ball

  • DESCRIPTION Maxfli Trifli golf ball

The Maxfli TriFli stands out from most other distance balls for a few reasons. Yes, it passes the distance test with flying colors, otherwise, it wouldn’t be on this list. It also flies straight and has a 3-piece construction that gives it a boost around the greens compared to many of its competitors.

Maxfli’s Find-the-Fairway dimple pattern that helped its Straightfli live up to its name has made its way to the TriFli, and after thorough testing, we can confirm that it does, in fact, help you find the fairway more often.

While nobody will confuse the TriFli with a Pro V1 from 15 yards out, the 3-piece construction delivers noticeably more control around the greens than its sibling, the Straightfli.

Srixon Z Star XV golf ball

  • DESCRIPTION Srixon Z Star XV golf ball

If you have a faster swing speed, 100 mph or more with driver, and you want maximum distance with some performance, try the Srixon Z Star XV.

The Z Star XV is a 3-piece ball with a urethane cover. With a compression rating of 102, it’s on the firmer side, which is part of the reason it’s such a good fit for those faster swing speed players. Srixon’s Spin Skin+ coating gives the Z Star XV even more spin and control in wedge and iron shots.

Wilson Triad

Wilson Triad golf ball

Wilson Triad golf ball

  • DESCRIPTION Wilson Triad golf ball
  • SOURCE Dick's Sporting Goods
  • PERMISSION Permission given by Dick's Sporting Goods

If you haven’t checked out Wilson’s line of golf balls, you’re missing out. You’re probably familiar with MOI as it relates to golf clubs, but Wilson has given its Triad golf ball a high-MOI design by redistributing weight from the core to the outer layers of the ball. That delivers more ball speed and lower spin with your driver, which of course means more distance. Isn’t that why we’re here?

Considering all that comes in a 3-piece, urethane-covered package for just $39, it would almost be foolish not to see if the Triad can deliver more distance, while maintaining short-game performance, in your game.

Vice Tour golf ball

Vice Tour golf ball

  • DESCRIPTION Vice Tour golf ball
  • SOURCE Walmart
  • PERMISSION Permission given by Walmart

After a quick stop in the performance-distance category, we’re back to sheer distance-land with the Vice Tour.

The Tour is distance-focused and its latest edition out-performed the Titleist Tour Speed in driver spin, and ball speed, helping it eek out 8.9 more yards than the Tour Speed when robot-tested at a moderate (95.2 mph) swing speed.

For mid- and high-handicappers who want top-tier distance and also rely short-game performance to shoot their target scores, the Vice Tour is another good option to consider. It’s 3-piece construction adds performance to the iron and wedge game, and the KIL alignment line is subtle and effective.

Bridgestone e12 Contact

Bridgestone e12 Contact

Bridgestone e12 Contact golf ball

  • DESCRIPTION Bridgestone 2023 e12 Contact golf ball
  • PERMISSION Permission give by Golf Galaxy

Are you looking for straight distance? Of course you are! That’s exactly what Bridgestone is selling with the e12 Contact golf ball, and the 2023 edition is even better than its predecessor.

Bridgestone’s Contact Force Dimples make the e12 Contatce unique. That’s essentially a dimple within a dimple that, combined with the FLEXATIV cover,  gives you more (46% more, according to Bridgestone) surface contact, which, by way of more energy transfer, leading to more ball speed, results in more distance.

The added benefit of this unique cover is that it also flies straighter than a ball with a traditional dimple pattern.

Noodle Long & Soft

Noodle Long & Soft golf ball

Noodle Long & Soft golf ball

  • DESCRIPTION Noodle Long and Soft golf ball
  • SOURCE PGA Tour Superstore
  • PERMISSION Permission given by PGA Tour Superstore

The Noodle Long and Soft hit golf retail shelves in 2001 and was an instant success. The name rang true on the course, after all. Most players saw distance gains without feeling like they were hitting a rock. The Noodle quickly became a must-have ball for average players. Today, after several ownership changes, TaylorMade makes the Noodle Long and Soft.

Today’s Noodle golf ball is still long, with significant distance gains for any player who swings 95 mph or below. It’s also still soft, with a 34 compression rating. For both of those reasons, this ball isn’t intended for players who have fast swing speeds. However, the vast majority of amateur players can tee up a Noodle and appreciate the outcome.

Another big draw to the Noodle is its value, which has not changed through the decades. The current model is sold as a 24-pack for only $25.

Callaway ERC Soft

Callaway ERC Soft

Callaway ERC Soft golf ball

  • DESCRIPTION Callaway ERC Soft golf ball

Callaway makes it quite clear what the ERC Soft is on its website, stating “This is our longest golf ball with soft feel.”

The ERC Soft offers the best of all worlds because it’s long, soft, has good greenside control, and is durable.

The hybrid cover features what Callaway calls a PARALOID Impact Modifier from Dow. This gives the ERC Soft exceptional distance with low spin and high ball flight. This makes the ERC soft a great ball for high- and mid-handicap players, leading you into Callaway's Chrome Soft lineup as your game improves.

Choosing a Distance Golf Ball

The USGA seems to think that the golf ball travels too far for professionals, but we’re willing to bet you want a ball that goes even farther , not one that’s shorter.

Here are some of the main aspects that impact the distance a golf ball travels, and how they impact its performance in other areas, like spin, stopping power, short-game control, and durability). When deciding which ball suits you best, consider the whole picture, tee to green.

Construction

Most of the golf balls that you’ll find on this list, and distance golf balls in general, are 2-piece balls. This means that they have a thin cover and a solid core. Two-piece balls offer the least greenside spin, but produce more roll once the ball lands.

Three- and 4-piece golf balls have additional layers between the cover and core which produce more spin on approach and touch shots. While this is very important, if you’re simply looking for a ball that goes the furthest, a 2-piece ball will get the job done. If you want a blend of top-tier distance and greenside control, consider a 3-piece ball.

Urethane vs. Ionomer Cover

When it comes to a golf ball’s cover, there’s urethane, and everything else. Urethane balls spin more, which is not what you want if for you’re looking for maximum distance. But don’t panic, urethane-covered balls still churn out crazy distance, especially for higher swing speed players. Just ask any tour player.

That extra spin is actually the biggest benefit of urethane balls, because it gives players puppeteer-like green-side control.

Ionomer and surlyn-covered balls spin less, which helps them travel farther. That reduced spin, however, could become problematic if you struggle to hold greens with your irons or lack precision in your short game.

While our list mostly includes ionomer and surlyn covered balls, we did include a couple urethane balls. Players with faster swing speeds who demand short-game performance should absolutely play a urethane ball, even if they’re searching for maximum distance.

Dimples and Flight

The dimples on a distance golf ball are designed more to fight drag and rotation than grabbing greens. If you’re shopping distance, stopping-power has to take a backseat.

Distance golf balls typically launch mid to high with all clubs. This allows you to get the ball in the air and maximize carry.

Compression

Compression is a measure of how firm or soft a golf ball is. The lower the compression rating, the softer the ball is.

A compression rating of around 50 or below accommodates slower swing speeds. For fast swing speeds, a compression rating of 90 or above can be the ticket to big distance.

golf ball hit by driver in slow motion

What Is Golf Ball Compression and Does It Actually Matter?

Distance or Performance?

Chasing distance is fun, and there’s no doubt distance balls can benefit most golfers, but it’s important to consider the tradeoffs of a distance ball.

If you land the ball on a lot of greens, only to watch it roll off, then can’t get up and down because your ball is hard to control around the greens, you could probably benefit more from a performance ball.

Experiment with a few of these distance balls and compare how they perform tee to green against a ball that emphasizes other benefits. Whichever the best option is for you, it will be clear pretty quickly.

A fancy new bag that's fit for the tour, big max dri lite silencio 2 golf bag.

Big Max makes a variety of golf equipment for players on the move, but they focus heavily on golf bags. Offering an assortment of club carriers to fit a range of players’ needs, their design schemes settle into two categories—stand bags for golfers who still want to carry their clubs and cart bags for players who rely on wheels.

The Big Max Dri Lite Silencio 2 Golf Bag is a full-size cart bag ready for a caddie’s shoulder or the straps of a golf cart. It’s got PGA Tour dimensions and build quality, with the convenience of 14 club compartments for easy organization.

A Look Back On The Past

Uncommon Goods

New York Times Personalized Golf History Book

Give a gift they can enjoy off the green with a book that showcases the rich history of golf through the lens of The New York Times. Featuring in-depth articles and photographs that capture the most iconic moments and players in golf's history, it’s made even more unique thanks to a personalization option that allows you to add the recipient's name and a special message. Play All Year Long With A Launch Monitor And Simulator

Rapsodo mlm2pro mobile launch monitor.

Rapsodo’s new MLM2PRO uses enhanced sensors and optics, including a dual-optical camera and radar processing, to provide swing-by-swing data on 13 metrics including six measured metrics such as carry distance, launch angle, spin rate, spin axis and ball speed. Video functions allow you to see your full body while Shot Vision and Impact Vision lock on where the club meets the ball.

The MLM2PRO also serves as a full-service golf simulator that works outdoors on the driving range or indoors in a net enclosure. The simulator offers access to 30,000 real courses around the world.

Take A Bite Around The Greens With Jaws Raw

Callaway golf jaws raw wedge.

Golfers want a good lofted wedge to fly high and true before landing and stopping (or biting) on the green. To that end, the wedges most club manufacturers produce lay in very specific groove patterns on the club faces from sole to toe.

Callaway went for extreme bite in its new Jaws Raw Wedges, introducing an offset groove pattern and a rough, unfinished club face to seize the golf ball’s surface and produce maximized backspin. Fortunately, since Callaway is a longtime presence in the golf equipment world, you can rest assured all of those evolutions are USGA legal.

Keep Your Arms And Body Connected In Your Swing

Golf Training Aids

Sure-Golf The Connector Golf Training Aid

It’s always “buyer beware” in the world of golf training aids. For every legitimate tool that could improve your game there are five gimmicks that waste a golfer’s time and money. Sure-Golf leans into the former category as they make simple gadgets that focus on very specific skills so players can choose the right solution to individual problems.

The Connector works to teach synching arms and body—or torso, to be more specific—as both need to turn together through the golf swing. It’s lightweight and easily disassembled for carry to and from the practice range.

For The Walking Golfer Who Wants Stability

Swiftwick flite xt zero golf socks.

The Swiftwick Flite XT Zero Golf Socks pack what the manufacturer calls its proprietary GripDry Fiber—a specially designed fabric intended to stay in place during the sudden movements and weight shifts of a golfer’s swing. While a foot sweats during an 18-hole stroll, these Swiftwick socks disperse the moisture and give you one less thing to worry about on the course. Avoid the irritation of a golf sock that slides down the heel below the shoe line or the potential round-ruining arrival of a walking blister.

A Golf Watch That Comes Pre-Loaded With 43,000 Courses

Garmin approach s70.

While the previous Garmin S62 was already an impressive piece of kit, the S70 steps it up with an improved screen that displays detailed golf course maps with pan and zoom features for determining target distance. That screen also shows green contour data to lay out slope direction and incline or decline amounts.

Garmin improved the Virtual Caddie feature to display shot dispersion data and suggest the right club depending on your recorded distance and accuracy. The Caddie software considers wind speed, wind direction, altitude and other factors when suggesting a club.

Stewart Golf Follow Carts Are Your Robotic Caddies

Stewart Golf

Stewart Golf Vertx Remote Golf Cart

While a little pricier than many of the gifts on this list, the Stewart Golf Vertx is a high-tech golf cart from the UK that allows you to walk your round of golf without having to carry, push, pull or otherwise wrestle with your golf bag. It’s built with free-rolling wheels to cross the terrain of any golf course. And it folds up to fit in any car and has a battery pack that will hold out for 18 holes.

GolfForever Makes A Multi-Tool For Training

Golfforever swing trainer aid kit.

You can use the GolfForever Swing Trainer Kit in multiple ways thanks to the various elements it includes. If you need to stretch or warm up, pick up the weighted club bar. To build your strength, turn to the resistance bands and free app that guides you through strength and conditioning training. Finally, you can refine your tempo by swinging the heavier bar like you would any golf club.

Full Swing Packs All Necessary Functions Into A High-End Kit

Full swing kit launch monitor.

Arriving in a tough, high-impact case, the Full Swing Kit Launch Monitor can go with you to any practice facility. Working with its free app and a membership service, it tracks yours shots, analyzing multiple stats and reporting the data visually and audibly.

It’s an expensive, serious golf tool that presents a dedicated player with precise information to work on game improvement, reading everything from distance and direction to spin rate and swing path.

A Laser Rangefinder That Locks The Pin From 450 Yards Away

Garmin approach z82 laser rangefinder & golf gps.

The Garmin Approach Z82 Laser Rangefinder features image stabilization and vibrational feedback, and provides the target’s distance from up to 450 yards away. Like most Garmin golf gadgetry, it has 2D course mapping and comes pre-loaded with more than 43,000 courses worldwide—it can automatically determine which hole you’re playing and the par information. Laser Range Arc draws an arc on the map for more accurate distance mapping while PlaysLike Distance adjusts automatically for uphill and downhill slopes. If you pair it with your smartphone, it will also factor in wind speed and direction in real time.

A Net For Practicing At Home

Net return pro series jr. v2 net.

For dedicated golfers wanting to practice at home, the Net Return Pro Series Jr. V2 Net enables as many practice swings as a player’s heart desires. Net Return makes a series of practice nets in a variety of price ranges, but this Jr. V2 Net is set at a more approachable price. It can also serve indoors or out, and is made tough enough to last for years.

Once equipped with a Net Return, you can choose a practice mat and let the swing practice begin with confidence, knowing the net’s sound construction will catch any shot securely.

A Compact Massager For Aches And Pains

Theragun mini massage gun.

Golf may seem like it’s all fun and games, but your shoulders and hips can take a beating when swinging clubs for 18 holes. The Theragun Mini is the ideal mid-game solution. It’s small and compact to fit into any golf bag, so they can use it on the course to loosen tight muscles or break it out at home after a tough day on the back nine.

Celebrate A Round With A Round Of Drinks

19th hole cocktail stirrers.

For golf aficionados looking to add a touch of class to their drinks, this set of four cocktail stirrers makes it easier to enjoy a well-deserved beverage at the clubhouse or simply indulging in a favorite drink at home. The set includes a putter, wedge, iron and driver, each made from recycled stainless steel, that double as picks for food.

A Leather Golf Glove For Better Grip

Callaway golf opticolor leather glove.

The Callaway OptiColor Leather Glove offers an outstanding balance of affordability and design. The glove is made from leather and uses what Callaway calls “OptiFeel” technology to make it more comfortable during a round. The perforations on the palm, fingers and thumb allow heat and moisture to escape. And with an adjustable closure, players can decide whether they want a tight, secure fit or a looser one.

A High-Tech, Offline Tablet For Practice Notes

Remarkable 2 paper tablet.

Serious golfers study their game, their lessons, their drills and their own performance almost as a matter of academic rigor. Taking notes and listing comparative data tracks progress, as it would for any pursuit.

If they want to turn to the old-fashioned Moleskine notebook, that’ll do the trick. Still, there’s a better option for tech-centered golfers.

The advantages of using the paper-inspired ReMarkable 2 tablet includes the fact that it’s completely readable in sunlight and it allows total focus on the work—you can’t receive emails, texts or social media messages on the device. All recorded information syncs with the cloud, and the ReMarkable 2 allows you to send messages and reports back out into the world.

Stay Warm In The Wind With PXG's Springtime Vest

Pxg swing vest.

In keeping with the company’s golf club offerings, PXG apparel is always well-made and created with the most modern material science. What makes this Swing Vest so special is its ability to keep you warm and protect you from the elements without hindering movements.

Water resistant and lightweight, this soft and flexible garment keeps you warm and dry while allowing for an easy swing motion. Then, when you’re done playing and packing up for the day (or if the sun comes out to see you), the vest stores neatly in your bag until you need it again.

Grab A Golden Cap From The Golden Bear

Ahead jack nicklaus play yellow cap.

If you win 18 Majors, you offer more than just branded apparel—you offer apparel that supports the causes you hold dear. In the case of Jack Nicklaus, his golfwear partnership with Ahead offers official Golden Bear caps featuring the G.O.A.T.’s official logo. More importantly, Ahead donates 15% of all net sales to one of Nicklaus’ favorite charities, the Children's Miracle Network Hospital.

A Soft Golf Ball For Hard Golf Courses

Callaway golf chrome soft golf balls.

The term “soft” in a golf ball doesn’t mean you’re teeing up tennis balls or stress toys. Outwardly, the Callaway Chrome Soft feels like any other ball. However, “soft” here means the Callaway pellet has the Hyper Elastic SoftFast Core built into its triple-layer construction.

The flexible ball center allows for a good mix of distance, feel around the green and stickiness on the putting surface. It’s a good choice for a high handicapper looking for balanced performance.

For The Golf Traveler

Stitch Golf

Stitch Golf Multi-Use Traveler Bag

Taking a page out of science fiction engineering, this Multi-Use Travel Bag (MUT) from Stitch Golf seems bigger on the inside than on the outside— you can look at it as a sort of transformer. The idea is this piece of golfer’s luggage can function as a basic rolling duffle bag for standard travel assignments, or it can extend out to encase your golf clubs for those player journeys.

The set includes a torsion bar that spans the length of the golf bag and extends longer than any clubs inside it. That tough piece of metal protects your club heads and shafts from impact damage.

A Leaf Blower For Your Golf Bag

Zoombroom golf breeze.

You need a pristine putting service to have a real shot at putting well. Throughout the year—and especially come autumn—the wind can drop leaves and other natural debris onto the green. That’s when the ZoomBroom Golf Breeze—essentially a leaf blower that fits in your golf bag alongside your clubs—comes in handy.

Fully portable and rechargeable, the ZoomBroom uses a turbine blower to clear the green in every direction. Just make sure you mark your ball position before you go to work.

Look Good From Head To Toe

Tee time mismatched golfer's socks.

For the player who appreciate a touch of whimsy and style on the course, these eye-catching socks from Uncommon Goods feature mismatched designs that include golf-themed motifs like clubs, balls and flags. They add a playful flair to any golfer's attire, and provide comfort and quality to enhance their performance. Sport them from the green to the weekend getaway.

Create A Unique Golf Bag

Orca golf model a custom stand bag.

The ladies at Orca Golf offer you the opportunity to gift (to a friend, a partner, a beloved family member or yourself) an absolutely unique custom golf bag. The company’s setup works with individual customers, small groups or teams to create bespoke golf bags with a blend of everything from colors to logos to artwork.

Orca Golf kicks things off with a basic bag choice before its design team works with the buyer to forge an individual creation that expresses the owner’s passions and identity. Sure, it costs a little more than a traditional golf bag, but your giftee will sport a piece of kit that’s entirely their own.

A Golf Polo To Take The 'Serious' Out of Your Game

Tipsy Elves

Tipsy Elves Rubber Ducky Golf Polo

There are flashy and lighthearted golf polos, and then there are the products from Tipsy Elves. Specializing in not just louder patterns and designs, but looks meant to generate a laugh or a story, their pieces like the Rubber Ducky Golf Polo leave subtlety behind for the player who wants to abandon the stuffier elements of the game.

Adding to the appeal at Tipsy Elves are the more reasonable prices for their polos (less than half the price of some other brands) and the good build quality for such affordable golf wear. They’re just not for that country club atmosphere—more Rodney Dangerfield than Ted Knight.

Play A Round With An 11-In-One Golf Club

It’s an idea that’s been tried before—often without success. Can y0u carry one golf club capable of transforming into a complete set? To this day, none of the attempts to distill a full golf bag into one tool have proved successful, with each having failed due to poor build quality or faulty design.

The Q Club takes on that challenge with an adjustable head design that slots in from putter to driving iron. It plays well enough to get any player around a par three or executive golf course, but the lack of a comparable driver limits length off the tee.

The build quality feels solid enough. Now, time will tell how the Q Club fares from season to season for players who want to travel light.

Embrace The Age Of The Golf Hoodie

RealGolfers

RealGolfers FlopShot Hoodie

Not too long ago, it was controversial to wear a hoodie on the golf course: The better, more expensive or more prestigious the course, the louder the controversy. That’s all behind us now as hoodies have the approval of most golf purists, as long as they show respect for the game by showing off proper high quality.

The FlopShot Hoodie from RealGolfers is made specifically with golf in mind to keep up its end of the bargain. Soft and stretchy to allow for a smooth golf movement, the ribbed cuffs are not too baggy or tight, and tightened stitching on the hood ensures stays in place during the natural torso turn of a golf swing.

A Practice Tool For The Arch Putter

The putting arc ms-3d.

There are countless putting tools meant to train proper front/back stroke, roll accuracy, pace and other elements of this unique golf activity. Rather than focus on how fast or how straight you strike the golf ball in your putting movement, The Putting Arc focuses on the natural curvature of the putting movement.

Just like any other golf swing from the drive to the chip, there’s always some amount of movement around your body. The Putting Arc brings awareness of that motion to the shortest of shots by guiding (read: forcing) the putter to stay on plane. It does its job well, but be warned—some players have a less arc-induced, straight front to back movement. Those golfers should look to those “straighten your roll” tools.

Make Your Putter Work Better Than Team USA

Superstroke 2023 ryder cup usa putter grip.

The fact that Team USA bombed at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome shouldn’t be held against the handsome putter grip SuperStroke designed to commemorate the event. It looks great and will improve the aesthetics of any golfer’s short stick.

A thicker design to fit much of the SuperStroke line, the Ryder Cup offering will fit any standard putter shaft, but it won’t cooperate with non-anchored belly putters—just like Team USA couldn’t cooperate with each other.

A More Casual Golf Hoodie Option

Travis mathew cloud hoodie.

In the now-acceptable world of the golf polo, the ultra-soft Travis Mathew Cloud Hoodie sports a less-technical design than most of the golf-centric, athletic-themed garments you‘ll find out there. Well-renowned for its ultra-cushiony material, the Cloud Hoodie would work best on a more casual course during a fun round of golf.

The garment will also wear well throughout the day away from the course. The only warning here is that it might not cut it on the more advanced, expensive or private courses where a more “formal” or “athletic” dress code is always in effect.

A Durable, Quick-Dry Belt That Doubles As A Bottle Opener

Mountain Khakis

Mountain Khakis Solid Webbing Belt

Seamlessly blending style and functionality on the green, the Mountain Khakis Webbing Belt’s durable and adjustable fabric ensures a secure fit, offering both comfort and flexibility during swings, while the sleek design adds a touch of sporty elegance to any golf ensemble. When it’s time to crack open a cold one, the buckle doubles as a discreet bottle opener.

A Sleek, Sophisticated Golf Shoe From Allbirds

Allbirds golf dashers.

The perfect gift for golfers who prioritize comfort and eco-conscious choices, the Allbirds Golf Dashers are crafted for full-swing stability. These nature-made shoes transition from the course to post-round drinks, ensuring comfort during all 18 holes without a cart, at the driving range and even at the 19th hole. Built with ZQ Merino Wool and recycled polyester, the ripstop material provides protection against light elements, while the microsuede saddle tied into the laces enhances midfoot and heel lockdown. Find it in a men’s and women’s version .

A Poster That Celebrates The Nation's Top Courses

50 best usa golf courses scratch off poster.

Pairing the thrill of discovery with a love for the game, this scratch-off poster showcases 50 of the country’s best courses, each one hand-picked for their unique features, from tee locations to stunning views. Scratch off each bucket list course to keep track of progress and hang the poster in an office space or den for all to see.

A Soft, Sporty Quarter-Zip

Peter Millar

Peter Millar Perth Performance Quarter-Zip

Most golfers would be happy to receive a quarter-zip from Costco, but because this is a gift, you’d be wise to pull out all the stops and splurge on Peter Millar’s Perth Performance top. The classic style is built with a breathable, four-way stretch fabric that’s easy to care for and comfortable beyond the green, and small details, like a mock collar and banded cuffs, add to its appeal.

A Subscription To Essays, Interviews And Beautiful Imagery

The Golfer’s Journal

The Golfer's Journal Subscription

Complete with long-form articles, player interviews and stunning photography, The Golfer’s Journal isn’t so much a quarterly magazine as it is a work of art to be framed on a coffee table. Support the print version for $90 per year or stick to digital for only $60. With the in-print subscription, your giftee will receive access to exclusive events and a 10% discount on The Golfer’s Journal merchandise and apparel.

A Sophisticated Scorecard Holder

Handy picks leather golf scorecard holder.

Crafted with quality leather, this elegant scorecard holder from Handy Picks not only adds a touch of sophistication to their game but also keeps scorecards organized and protected, ensuring a practical and stylish companion for every round.

A Tool To Keep Their Clubs Clean

Grooveit the wet club scrub.

An ideal gift for golfers who take pride in maintaining their clubs, Grooveit’s Wet Club Scrub features an innovative design that efficiently removes dirt, grass and debris from grooves, ensuring optimal performance on the course. It comes with a strong 3-year warranty for added peace of mind.

A Smart Vest That Supplies Warmth

Gobi dune heated vest.

With its innovative heating technology and powerful battery, Gobi’s Dune Heated Vest provides all-day warmth during extended golf sessions. The easy-to-use LED controller allows the wearer to adjust the heat settings with a simple touch, and with a quick heat-up time of under 30 seconds and three heating zones, including a large one in the back, it ensures a cozy and comfortable experience.

A Divot Tool With A Little Style

Birdicorn 6-in-1 golf divot tool.

This simple divot tool has a trick up its sleeve. Well, more like six tricks up its sleeve because it serves not only as a divot tool, but a ball marking stencil, a coin holder, a cigar rest, an alignment aid and a bottle opener, too. With 10 different colors to choose from, you’ll find one that matches your kit and finally ditch the cheap divot tool they gave you at the clubhouse.

Built For Gaming, Good For Your Game

Gunnar tallac premium glasses.

Stick with us here. These Gunnar Optics Tallac Glasses are designed originally for computer use, armed with special lens treatments to reduce wear and tear on your peepers. However, with a blue-tint they function well as sunglasses that cut glare on sunny courses, while the computer glare treatments make it easier to see cart GPS screens.

Side shields provide welcome additional sun protection, and Gunnar can send them to you with your current optics prescription for longterm use.

Almost Everything You Need To Play At Home

Carl's Place

Carl's Place DIY Golf Simulator Enclosure Kit

There used to be an understanding that an indoor golf simulator would cost you five figures. That’s no longer the case with the Carl's Place DIY Golf Simulator Enclosure Kit. Get everything you need for a compact, but fully functioning enclosure for $1,000.

You’ll still need to add a launch monitor with simulator capability, but there are perfectly workable models out there that run under $500. A $100 projector can set you up on the impact screen, if you don’t want to use a laptop or tablet for simulator play. Bottom line gets you playing at home for a fraction of the cost of larger bays.

Do Golf Balls Make a Difference?

Every golfer has probably wondered if changing golf balls will improve their golf game. Golf is a complicated sport because every player hits differently and comes to the course with their own set of golf balls and clubs. When looking at the impact golf balls have on the game, it is true that weight, shape, material, and more can impact game play.

According to physics, the weight of an object can directly impact its trajectory and therefore, how far it travels. Generally speaking, heavier golf balls will travel a shorter distance because of the air resistance and increased spin. The opposite is true for lighter golf balls. However, this leads to the question of control because it can be difficult to control a light golf ball.

Ultimately, there is science behind the way golf balls are designed, so it’s important to be aware of the subtle differences between styles and brands. However, you should practice and get used to playing with one type of ball because consistency can allow you to improve control and predict shots in a more reliable way. When it comes to golf and picking golf balls, consistency is key.

Do Expensive Golf Balls Make a Difference?

As we mentioned, selecting the right golf balls and remaining consistent are important steps to becoming a great golfer. However, you cannot expect to purchase a super expensive box of golf balls and instantly become a better player. It takes immense skill and expertise to be able to tell the difference between cheap and expensive balls during a match.

That being said, expensive golf balls tend to be made with more layers and intricate design features. Therefore, they can travel faster on drives, help you control your short game, and remain steady during puts.

How to Choose Golf Balls?

When you’re looking for golf balls, the two most important things to keep in mind are your personal preference and experience level. Once you know what part of your golf game needs improvement, you can look at factors like cover, layer, compression, and weight.

How Can You Tell If a Golf Ball Is Good Quality?

There are three factors that go into a golf ball that can begin to tell you more about its quality: cover, layers, and compression. Some golf balls are only made out of one material whereas others have up to five layers of materials. Balls with more complexity tend to be higher quality, but that doesn’t mean that it is the best ball for beginners.

The two most common types of covers for a golf ball include urethane and surlyn. The latter is more common because it is a durable, plastic-like material. This is a factor that can influence your shots and also the longevity of your ball.

Layers tell us a lot about a golf ball because the core material depends on how many layers there are. For example, fewer layers probably means the ball is mainly made up of solid rubber and much harder. More layers could mean that the center is more of a gel-like, flexible rubber. The concept behind multiple layers is to capture multiple material reactions to the swing.

Compression

Lastly, compression tells us how much pressure was put on the ball when it was made. This also impacts how a golf ball responds to a hit. Typically, low compression is better for those with a high handicap and high compression for those with more expertise, or a low handicap.

Best Value Golf Balls

If you’re golfing on a budget, these are the best value golf balls you can find online. Since most value golf balls are fewer layers, you’ll see most of them target distance as the main priority. This is best for beginners, but can also help experienced golfers hit further.

3. Callaway Warbird Golf Balls, $19.99

golf travel balls

Callaway is a trusted name in golf gear, so their Warbird balls are an excellent, affordable choice. In either white or yellow, these balls are prepared to go the distance and crush speed on the course. They are made of two layers, so the design is pretty simple, which is perfect for beginners or reliable distance shots.

2. Wilson Duo Soft Golf Balls, $19.99

golf travel balls

The Wilson Duo Soft golf balls are another great bang for your buck. This ball actually had the lowest golf ball compression value of all soft golf balls on the market in 2022, so it is a high handicappers best friend. You’ll see more impact from your shots regardless of your power, so it is one of the best golf balls for your value and those who are new to the sport.

1. TaylorMade Noodle Long & Soft, $24.99

golf travel balls

TaylorMade makes a great beginner ball at an affordable price called the Noodle Long & Soft . This ball is made with a compression value of 34, so it’s super soft for anyone working on their swing speed and strength. It will absolutely carry you a far distance on the fairway, but you might feel a bit less control. However, for most beginners, this isn’t obvious as they must work on their swing anyways. It’s one of the best balls you can get for under $25.

Best Mid-Price Golf Balls

3. Bridgestone Golf e12 Contact Golf Balls, $34.99

golf travel balls

Another trusted brand name for golf gear and the top golf balls is Bridgestone. The Bridgestone Golf e12 Contact golf balls come at a solid price point of $35, so they may not be the cheapest you can find, but it is for good reason. The design is said to allow for 46% more surface contact between the ball and the golf club to allow for better results with each hit. Golfers should see straighter and more forceful shots with this ball.

2. Titleist Tour Soft Golf Balls, $36.99

golf travel balls

Titleist Tour Soft golf balls can begin to show you what “tour” quality means in a golf ball. This ball is known for its soft touch, which can improve short game and the level of control needed to play like the pros. However, its design is still pretty simple, which keeps the price point below $40 for a pack. Try it out if you’re looking to experience a softer ball without sacrificing speed.

1. Callaway ERC Soft Triple Track Golf Balls, $39.99

golf travel balls

Another great soft ball option is the Callaway ERC Soft Triple Track . It has a high-energy core, which uses the energy from your swing to make a faster and longer shot. However, these balls also include “Triple Track technology,” which can help you out when putting. You don’t want your ball to serve you well on drives and then spin too fast on the green, so this is the perfect mid-price ball to try out.

How Do You Choose a Golf Ball Based on Swing Speed?

World Golf Rankings Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Aligning your golf ball to swing speed is a common practice in golf, but it is also something that people tend to disagree on. A helpful guideline that we found is to choose a compression number that is close to your swing speed in mph.

Specifically, when you use a driver at the driving range, you can see your swing speed in mph. If your speed reads 70 mph, then you can select a ball with a compression number around 70 as well. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but if the numbers are not close at all, you could risk hurting your drive potential. Your swing speed impacts your drive shot and drive distance the most, so that’s important to keep in mind.

Before picking your go-to golf ball, be sure to hit the driving range or a golf pro shop to test your swing speed. This and your experience level will give you a ton of information before purchasing balls.

Best Golf Balls for Fast Swing Speed

First off, you’re probably wondering what is considered a high swing speed in golf. Generally speaking, anything around or above 100 miles per hour is considered a fast swing speed. If this is you, it also probably means you have a low handicap as swing speed and handicap have been found to be connected.

1. Mizuno RB Tour Golf Balls, $42.95

golf travel balls

Mizuno RB Tour Golf Balls are the best golf balls for anyone with a high swing speed because they have a low trajectory and subtle spin off of a driver. As a result, speed from the golf swing is essential to pushing these balls to the best possible drive on the course. Plus, the compression for these balls is about 91, which would fit someone with a 90-100+ mile per hour golf swing quite well.

Best Golf Balls for Mid-Level Swing Speed

When looking at a mid swing speed, that probably means anywhere from 80-100 miles per hour. If this is you, then you are in the middle of what golfers would consider a speedy swing. It can be improved with strength and practice as well, but here is the best golf ball option for your current swing speed.

1. Titleist Velocity Golf Balls, $29.99

golf travel balls

Titleist Velocity Golf Balls are a no brainer for golfers with a mid-range swing speed. The name “Velocity” means exactly what is suggests: these balls move incredibly fast and have a high flight shape that can improve your overall game play. This way, where you might lack a bit in swing, you can make up for in serious distance. However, they are known to feel playable around the green, so you won’t feel too out of control with short shots.

Best Golf Balls for Slow Swing Speed

There’s nothing wrong with having a slow swing speed. In fact, most, if not all, beginners have a swing speed on the slower side. When classifying your swing speed, under 80 miles per hour is usually what is considered “slow” or beginner-level. However, you can help your golf game by picking the best golf balls that suit your swing. This usually means finding a golf ball with a low compression that aligns closely with your swing speed.

1. Srixon Soft Feel Golf Balls, $22.97

golf travel balls

The Srixon Soft Feel golf balls are the perfect choice for those with a slow swing speed. The ball has a couple of key features that help beginners drive a lot further than they normally would such as a “FastLayer Core,” easy target alignment, and a “Speed Dimple Pattern.” As a result, you will get extra speed and distance at your own swing speed.

What Is the Best Golf Ball for Cold Weather?

If you golf into the late fall or early winter months, temperatures can get quite chilly and even impact how your golf ball plays on the course. The reason for this is that cold temperatures create more density in the air and as a result, objects move slower. Golf balls can become harder in the cold and when you combine that with dense air, they may not travel as far. As a result, it’s best to select a super soft, distance golf ball for cold weather like the following option from Golf Galaxy.

1. Wilson Duo Soft Optix Golf Balls, $22.99

golf travel balls

While any soft and distance golf ball will fare better in the cold weather, the Wilson Duo Soft Optix balls are our number one pick overall for those chilly days on the course. This golf ball is designed to travel further than any other Wilson ball and it also has increased height and visibility which can be key during windy, cold conditions. Each color offered is bright neon, which makes it easy to find in case you’re brave enough to golf in light snow or rain. Overall, though, for under $25, this ball has a super light and detailed dimple construction that makes distance and speed its main priority, which is what you need in cold weather.

What Golf Ball Does Tiger Woods Use?

Tiger Woods has said in many interviews that he is loyal to Bridgestone golf balls. While he used to play with the Tour B XS, he made a switch up last year to the Tour B X ball to increase his power and “ pop .”

What Ball Does Phil Mickelson Play?

Syndication: USA TODAY

Phil Mickelson is known to play with the Callaway Chrome Soft X golf ball . It is used by both pros and beginners, but specifically provides a fast drive and more advanced spin profile. It makes sense that Phil uses this ball because he is a master at control.

What Golf Ball Does Rory McIlroy Use?

PGA: Ryder Cup - Final Day

Rory McIlroy gave an interview after his 2022 golf season and said switching to TaylorMade’s TP5X from 2019 was his “turning point.” He believes this ball gave him much more control of the spin in windy conditions.

When Should You Throw Away Golf Balls?

If you’re searching for the best golf balls, the easy answer is that any kind of brand new balls will be in the best shape. But, for those loyal to their signature golf balls and the shot it provides them, it is important to know when you need a fresh box. Believe it or not, golf balls do need to be replaced after a certain period of use. It is not an exact science because it depends on how often you play, what kind of balls you have, and where you store golf balls.

The look and feel of golf balls will give you a warning as to when it is time to throw them away. Moldy, dirty, and stained golf balls tell us that they have been hit a lot as well as exposed to humidity and maybe even ponds. If you want to double check, hit the ball a few times and see how it feels. If it feels unusually heavy or the spin is off, you may have a waterlogged ball. In that case, it’s best to toss your old golf balls because it is not going to help your game.

What Is the #1 Golf Ball?

While this is an extremely subjective choice, one of the most popular golf balls for pros is the Titleist Pro V1 . Some of the best players on tour sponsor this ball including Will Zalatoris, Jordan Spieth, and Max Homa. The Pro V1 is known to offer a stable trajectory, which makes it one of the best golf balls for all golfers. However, its higher price tag explains why pros tend to be the customer base.

Which Brand of Golf Ball Is Best?

While everyone has their personal preferences when it comes to golf ball and golf gear brands, one of the oldest as well as most reputable and popular is Titleist . It was established in 1932, making it one of the oldest golf equipment companies out there. Plus, they were actually founded because of a missed putt , which turned out to be due to an off-center golf ball. As a result, Titleist used science to start making their own golf balls. They have a pretty amazing origin story and the number one ball on the market, so it is safe to say they are also the best golf ball brand out there.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, when searching for the best golf balls, you should walk yourself through a couple of key questions like what’s my my budget, golfing level, and swing speed? From there, you can do a little research and take a look at our recommendations to select the ball with the right function. Be sure to check the compression number, layer information, and tour status, which can make the difference for advanced golfers.

It all depends on your personal experience, so the ball that is right for your golf buddies might not be right for you. Either way, upgrading your golf balls can give you a leg up the next time you play.

TaylorMade SpeedSoft Golf Balls

The TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf ball is one of those rare products for which the marketing department’s catchphrase tells you everything you need to know.

“Golf is hard. Play a softer ball.”

SpeedSoft. Putting “Speed” next to “Soft”? We have questions.

The press release for the TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf ball tells us it’s a low-compression design, engineered for the “softest possible feel while maintaining explosive speeds for the everyday golfer.”

As with the recently released TP5 and TP5x, TaylorMade believes it has cracked the code to combine soft feel and ball speed with this new ball.

And the company believes it’s done it for $24.99 per dozen.

We have more questions.

TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf balls

And what about that “everyday golfer” thing? Are you an everyday golfer? And does that mean you play every day?

So many questions.

Let’s see if we can find some answers.

TaylorMade SpeedSoft Golf Balls: Downy Soft …

Before we get too deep, let’s put the TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf ball in the right spot. It’s a two-piece ionomer-covered ball for under $25 per dozen. For that kind of money, you can expect a soft, low-spinning, high-launching ball that you don’t mind losing. The Wilson Staff Duo Soft and the Srixon Soft Feel are typical of the species.

One benefit is a pleasingly soft feel, which can be addictive. But the big draw is you can get twice as many of them compared to what you’d spend on a Tour-level ball.

TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf balls.

But that “soft” thing has a double downside. When you go that soft, you sacrifice spin and ball speed. Tour-level balls spin because their firm, ionomer mantle layer pinches against the soft urethane cover on glancing blows. Since a two-piece ionomer-covered ball has, well, a firm ionomer cover, there’s no soft/firm contrast. Instead, it’s a firm/soft contrast, which delivers considerably less spin.

And relative firmness – that’s higher compression to you and me – is a key ingredient to ball speed. And ball speed, while not the sole indicator, is a key ingredient to overall distance. To put it simply: firmness contributes to ball speed, which contributes to distance. Soft, in other words, tends to be slower.

And the TaylorMade SpeedSoft is soft. As in sub-50 compression soft.

TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf balls

However, according to TaylorMade , the SpeedSoft tests right to the maximum USGA limit for initial velocity.

“To be able to create a product that’s that soft at that velocity is a very unique thing,” says Michael Fox, TaylorMade’s Global Golf Ball Director.

PWR To The Core

How does TaylorMade squeeze speed out of SoftSpeed? With its latest buy-a-vowel technology, PWRCORE.

According to TaylorMade, PWRCORE is an extra-large, super low compression core. That’s coupled with a firm ionomer cover with what TaylorMade describes as a low-drag, extended-flight 332 dimple pattern. The company says you’ll notice the soft feel mostly on approach and wedge shots, typically within 30 to 50 yards of the green.

golf travel balls

OEMs tell us, with some justification, that, since softer balls tend to spin less, they’re more likely to stay in play for their target golfers. That those target golfers struggle with a slice is often left unsaid. But it’s fair to reason that a ball that spins less is more likely to find right fairway instead of right rough, or right rough instead of right forest.

And I don’t know about the courses you play on but low-spinning tee shots tend to roll more in the fairway than they do in the rough. And they generally don’t roll at all in the forest.

Did TaylorMade crack the ball speed versus soft speed dichotomy? It’s more likely that it has altered the recipe a little bit to squeeze as much speed as it can out of a sub-50 compression ball.

But there is something unique about the TaylorMade SpeedSoft. That is, if you like a dash of color in your game.

golf travel balls

TayorMade SpeedSoft Ink

SpeedSoft Ink is, quite simply, a splash of color. TaylorMade calls the new paint splatter design a “vibrant visual technology” because why the hell not?

Wait, it gets better.

It’s a high-contrast, high-visibility paint job that is, and we’re quoting, “a canvas of personality and style ideally suited for those who dare to break convention.” It’s also a “palette of possibilities and roars with personality.”

golf travel balls

Flowery verbiage aside, a dash of color never hurt anyone. And if you like a dash of color, these are pretty cool.

TaylorMade SpeedSoft Golf Balls: Colors, Price, Availability

The basic TaylorMade SpeedSoft golf balls will be available in white and yellow in sleeves or in dozens.

The TaylorMade SpeedSoft Ink comes in three colorways, with color splashes available in green, blue or pink. TaylorMade is also offering red and orange options in ball jars at retail locations so you can buy them one at a time.

I must be missing something as I don’t understand the infatuation with soft feel. Is that so golfers who play cast clubs can think they are hitting a Tour ball with a forged blade? A center strike with a firm ball feels perfect to me and if a soft ball means less distance, why would I be interested?

So just another isonomer-covered soft ball. Don’t a ton of these exist already?

As is typical from all equipment makers, noise and fluff. Where are the data? I could explain to TaylorMade why I’m an astrophysicist, but that doesn’t make me one. And this is coming from a guy who already plays the TM Tour Response. Love the ball, by the way, but still need data on the new one.

Thanks, GolfSpy, for your usual spot on evals. I’ll be looking for more as spring commences.

League Golfer

I bought a dozen of these in Walmart on February 28th when I heard that they were closing out Titleist Velocity and TruFeel dozens for $9.50 and $8.50 each. I saw these, had never seen them before, and checked TaylorMade’s website. They were not on the website. The only reference on the web was a golf store in Malaysia that was selling them. That felt really weird, so I bought a dozen for the heck of it. I checked the web for a few more days in late February and early March and it was still a “mystery” ball aside from Malaysia and the shelves at the local Walmarts. Strange. Who would have thought Walmart would have a new golfball on its selves in multiple store so many days before TaylorMade would have it on its own website. I haven’t played the TM Speedsoft yet, but I did stockpile some Velocity and TruFeel dozens from a few different Walmarts at the closeout prices.

Congrats again to MGS for giving a proper eval and not just parroting marketing releases. The Wilson Duo and Srixon Soft are good balls for those who like soft feel, and here is another entering that popular market, but its nothing earth shattering. A good ball for most weekend golfers who think tour balls are overpriced (me). Someday would like to see a test of these types vs urethane on holding greens, as that is where the most difference will be.

This just looks like they are going after the Vice customers. Especially the box.

PHDrunkards

Can’t wait for your usual tests on these, if you’re going to be doing them

I think TaylorMade is in the wrong business and putting their efforts into the wrong product line if they are so sure they can provide you with something so soft with no performance drop off.

How do these compare with Tour Response/Tour Response Stripe? I thought those were low compression, low spinning balls as well…

So are they taking on Callaway Supersoft which is a high volume selling ball for that brand? Possibly their #1 in sales? Similar price point & adding color to also attract that Vice crowd screams great marketing which is certainly TM. The hate on soft balls is palatable at MGS but the “great unwashed” recreational golfers playing $2 Nassau’s 3 times a week is your everyday golfer so I say go for it Taylormade. You 100+MPH swing speed can whack those X balls around but truthfully a majority of us recreational avid golfers probably should be whacking a ball like this with hybrid irons & having a blast doing it.

> TaylorMade believes it has cracked the code to combine soft feel and ball speed with this new ball.

Of course they do.

A pair of golf shoes in the color grey.

  • Gripping bottoms
  • Breathable top
  • Available in six colors
  • May not be best in wet conditions

Some golf shoes aren’t attractive. There, we said it! Fortunately, we’d wear this pair from Adidas on and off the green. They have Traxion rubber outsoles instead of spikes, while the lightweight upper brings some air to the top feet. And if it matters to you (as it does to us), 50% of the upper is made from recycled material!

  • Motion lugs for traction
  • Flexible sole
  • Size down if you like a snug fit. Some report that the shoe runs large

This trending golf shoe for women is one of our favorites! Don’t worry that it doesn’t have any spikes. The motion lugs at the bottom act as traction, so you remain firmly planted, even on moist terrain. The flexible sole will keep feet comfortable as you move from hole to hole. It also doesn’t hurt that the design is pretty and available in several colors.

Best Tees: Callaway Par-Tee High Performance Golf Tee

A set of four white golf tees with colored tops

  • Doubles as a groove cleaner
  • Not as durable as we’d like

  • 5 – 1,300 yard range
  • BITE Magnetic Cart Mount
  • Some customers report that lock can be inconsistant

Play your best game possible with a laser rangefinder from the pros at Bushnell Golf.

The Tour V5 model is actually the least expensive in their lineup of gadgets but packs a serious punch when it comes to accuracy and functionality. The magnetic element on the side already sets this apart, as it can stick to the side of your cart bar with ease. It also uses both sight and feel, vibrating as well as visually showing you once you’ve locked on to the flag for your future hole-in-one.

A navy blue hat visor

  • Lightweight, sweat-wicking
  • Adjustable closure with hook and loop

There is no one size fits all when it comes to golf equipment and as Talley puts it you should find “something that fits you personally!” One of the best ways to achieve this, according to her is to “find someone you trust and go searching” for equipment together.

One of the most common mistakes she finds people make when picking out golf equipment for themselves is looking at the exact products the pros use.

“Often you see [people] just get what the pros get,” Talley said. “However, most amateurs need something more forgiving than the professionals. Don’t be scared to make it easier on yourself!”

Determining the right golf clubs, according to a pro

This comes down to personal preference. With most golf equipment, it may take testing out a few different brands before determining what works best for you. Talley points out two specific characteristics to keep an eye on when trying ones out.

“In many cases the shaft is most important and the club head needs to be something that you like,” she said. “The shaft needs to fit your age, body type and strength.”

TaylorMade's 2024 SpeedSoft golf balls boast style, performance

T o follow up on the release of the redesigned 2024 TP5 and TP5x , TaylorMade is making its mark (both literally and figuratively) in the low-compression, budget-friendly category with the launch of its SpeedSoft golf balls.

Priced at $25 per dozen, SpeedSoft is designed to deliver the softest feel through the bag, without sacrificing precious distance off the tee. The golf ball engineers at TaylorMade were able to achieve this rare blend with the help of a new PWRCORE (power core) that kicks the construction up a notch.

This power core technology allows the SpeedSoft to be the softest golf ball in the TaylorMade golf ball lineup, but the technology extends out from the core and to the cover thanks to the 322 extended flight dimple pattern which is engineered to offer low drag performance for stable flight and longer carry, especially for moderate swing speed golfers.

“SpeedSoft represents a significant stride in our ongoing commitment to delivering performance products to golfers of all skills,” said Josh Dipert, TaylorMade’s director of product development engineering, golf balls. “With a deliberate focus on engineering a low-compression design, this is the first time we've created a TaylorMade golf ball with a compression delta below 50. SpeedSoft stands out as a game-changer for its unparalleled combination of soft feel and explosive speeds.”

SpeedSoft Ink

While SpeedSoft is offered sans-graphics, there’s a louder option in the line called SpeedSoft Ink. According to TaylorMade, the goal was to create an all-encompassing visual design around the entire cover, to both make them stand out and let golfers bring more personality to the course.

Although we can’t divulge all the technical details of how TaylorMade engineers solved the problem of painting detailed graphics around the entire surface of a 1.68-inch dimpled sphere, let’s just say that this multi-axis print technology is what allows them to create bright, high-contrast designs.

“The market demand for golf balls with visual technology is on the rise, reflecting a growing segment of golfers who seek more than just the traditional white ball experience,” said Mike Fox, TaylorMade’s senior director of product creation, golf balls. “We feel like this is a segment that has previously been ignored and with SpeedSoft Ink we are meeting this demand while also taking a bold step towards catering to the modern golfer’s desire for virtual technology without sacrificing performance.”

The all-new TaylorMade SpeedSoft and SpeedSoft Ink come in a myriad of cover variations including standard white, yellow and Ink.
