4. Taman Negara National Park Tour From Kuala Lumpur with Canopy Walk

taman negara tour

⭐️ RATING: 4  out of  5  stars | ⌛️  TOUR LENGTH: 15 hours

The main highlight of this Taman Negara day trip is the Canopy Walkway, which arguably holds the title of the world’s longest ropewalk.

This suspension bridge is built 530 meters long and 40 meters above ground level and is indefinitely one of the main attractions that adventurer seekers must experience!

The walk itself will take about 20-30 minutes to finish.

To do the canopy walkway, you need to jungle trek for about 30 to 40 minutes from the Taman Negara HQ office.

A bit of stamina is required to hike up the steep trail to the first lookout of Teresek Hill.

If you want to see the view of the highest mountain in peninsular Malaysia Mount Tahan, take another 10-20 minute hike to reach the second lookout.

The bridge can only hold four people at a time, hence you need to wait for your turn after submitting your name to the nature guide.

There are canopy observation huts in the treetops that allow you to spy on the wildlife. If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a herd of elephants and slow loris. There are information boards available to explain the flora and fauna that you are seeing.

Make sure to get weather checks and updates to avoid disappointment. The canopy walkway closes every Friday, in bad weather or if under maintenance.

How to visit Taman Negara on a budget and spot wildlife

taman negara wildlife tour

What and where is Taman Negara?

What animals can i see in taman negara, taman negara accommodation, where to eat, how to get to taman negara, what other activities can i do, what’s a good itinerary for taman negara.

Taman Negara is Malaysia’s first national park and protects the world’s oldest rainforest, estimated to be 130 million years old – for reference, the dinosaurs died out roughly 65 million years ago. Located in central Malaysia, a few hours north of Kuala Lumpur, it’s a primaeval place to get your nature fix – towering trees choked with vines aside, here be flying lizards, flying lemurs, tapirs and ants the size of your thumb, to name just a few of its weird and wonderful inhabitants.

Most visitors access this rainforest through the riverside town of Kuala Tahan, a small community where tourism is their bread and butter. The south side of the river is where oil palm plantations and the town itself, as well as small patches of jungle, are located. Kuala Tahan is where you’ll likely be staying as it contains most of the guesthouses, eateries and agencies. Some of these are along the main strip where you’re dropped off the bus, whilst others are just off it. Floating restaurants line the bank of the river. Boats take you across in 30 seconds for 1 MYR to the park side, operating from 7.30-10 PM. Climbing the steps takes you to Mutiara Taman Negara Resort, the park’s only accommodation, and its headquarters where you’ll go to arrange permits. Around this resort, there’s a network of boardwalks and concrete paths which lead to the canopy walkway and Tahan hide. Beyond this, you can go to other hides and camps in the jungle by boat or on foot, some of which will require a guide to reach.

To my knowledge, Taman Negara is one of the best places in the world to see Malayan tapir . One tame individual often visited Mutiara Taman Negara’s lawns at night but unfortunately died in 2016, a famously hard year for celebrities. There is another tapir hotspot at Kumbang hide, a six-hour trek upriver, where you can spend the night – and indeed, you’ll need to in order to spot these nocturnal animals. Alternatively, you can take a one-hour boat ride to Kuala Terenggan (120 MYR for the whole boat), from where it’s a two-hour trek to the hide. It’s likely that you’ll have to hire the whole boat, though .

The night safaris (40 MYR) around Kuala Tahan’s palm oil plantations are your best chance of seeing leopard cat , thanks to the resident rats that both feed them and give farmers a reason to not shoot them. Other possibilities include flying squirrels, civets, slow loris and owls. Pretty much everyone and their dog offers a night safari, but I would highly recommend the one Tahan Makmur Travel and Tours offers. They are located on a corner across from a mini-mart and beside Teresek View Motel. Their safaris, like most, are done in trucks with benches but are not piled high with people, and drive through an area of small jungle trees rather than oil palm plantations like most. Also, their guide knows quite a few things about the animals.

The boardwalks around Mutiara offered some of the best birding I’ve done in Malaysia, with broadbills, leafbirds, pittas and peacock-pheasants in the area, along with flying lizards and vipers. Wandering around these is free, and tours (40 MYR) are terrible value considering the largeness of groups plus the inability to stop and listen. The canopy walkway costs 5 MYR, and can be a good site at the right time.

taman negara wildlife tour

Wherever you’re staying, check its surroundings; Mutiara’s restaurant has a resident black hornbill, and I saw a sunda flying lemur at Danz Eco Resort when I went out to brush my teeth – spotting it scurrying up a tree, then gliding with its skin flaps illuminated by the lights below, was certainly one of those chance encounters you don’t forget any time soon after.

I’ll talk about Mutiara Resort real quick, since it’s where you might want to stay if you must be in the park at first light. Privileged location aside, staff were somewhat melancholy when I visited and the accommodation seemed somewhat overpriced and worn out, which some Tripadvisor reviewers can confirm .

taman negara wildlife tour

Mahseer Chalet was where I stayed my first two nights. The dorm, 20 MYR, is air-conditioned and has no hot water but if one takes a shower during the day, some of it will have been warmed up anyway. The staff are some of the friendliest I have met in Malaysia, a group of ladies who multi-task between running this place and taking care of their kids, who often mill about on the lawn. Other good guesthouses I tried that were full include Yellow Guesthouse and Julie’s Guesthouse.

On the last night, I stayed at Danz Eco Resort, whose capsules (180 MYR) are a brilliant option. They’re more expensive than places in town though not bad value, given that meals and hot drinks are included. The capsules include power sockets, AC and a green outside to give it a modern yet naturalistic feel. They also have a large campsite, and travellers I met there spoke well of the tents the morning after they’d spent the night in them. The dining area is a great place to socialise with other people, and I met quite a few with a keen interest in nature. They’re located a ways outside Kuala Tahan, but have a free truck shuttle service between them and their circular office, at the top of the hill south of the river. Because of the seclusion and surroundings, they’re a good halfway house between the cheap yet tourist-towny KT and the (somewhat) wild yet wildly expensive Mutiara.

taman negara wildlife tour

Lastly, for a proper jungle experience, you can sleep in one of the hides for 5 MYR, wooden houses built on stilts overlooking clearings. You’ll have to bring any mats, blankets, food or spotlights as the only thing you’ll find there is a few wooden bunk bed frames and a toilet with no running water. Well, I’ve not confirmed that per se, but the mess was enough of a clue. You can visit these yourself after arranging permits at the HQ, or do so through a guided trek which may also involve sleeping in a cave, surrounded by bat excrement.

taman negara wildlife tour

Kumbang Hide is a good place to spot animals (see tapirs) but at the current moment is somewhere I’d recommend going on a tour to. Tabing Hide is located one hour’s walk from Kuala Tahan, so is a much better option for “just experiencing the jungle” and if you’re prone to forgetting something. You’ll hear the buzz of boat engines by day but at night it becomes more serene. It doesn’t seem to be great for wildlife, but I managed to see a deer here and a bat landing on the stick right in front of a lookout point.

Since this is a budget travel guide, avoid the floating restaurants. Their novelty will wear off quickly but the taste of the food for what you paid will take longer to. Even in the eateries along the bus strip, I was disappointed by the scran at times, but staff were always nicer. The flat noodle soup at the largest place on the western corner of the strip was probably the best meal I had in town. The bowl cost me 5 MYR and a coffee 2, and then I would go to one of the mini-marts for some snacks (an orange and a pack of cookies cost me 1.3 and 5 MYR respectively).

The first step to arriving here from anywhere is to get to Jerantut. Most people reach it from KL, so to do this get to Titiwangsa LRT station and from the nearby bus terminal it will cost 18 MYR to Jerantut. At both ends there are places nearby to grab a meal, and on the return journey we stopped at a couple of roadside stands for lunch. Next, there are three options. The first is a very old bus with brown leather seats and a wooden floor, which is 7 MYR and takes about two hours. The second is a minibus that the touts offer on arrival for double the price that will leave at a more convenient time. Then again, they did offer me advice for where to get the old bus so calling them “touts” is a little harsh.

The third option is the very touristy one. You first get a minibus to the middle of nowhere, a town called Kuala Tembeling, for about 10 MYR. Next, you take a motorboat with several rows of odd seating (mats on the floor and a backrest) and luggage is piled on the front – this can be precarious if there are many people onboard. The boat ride takes 3 hours and costs 45 MYR, and gives you your first view of the jungle after the miles of oil palms you bussed through. You won’t see much wildlife apart from the usual monkeys and lots of pacific swallows, so it’s not exactly a free safari, though nature can be full of surprises. For example, I saw a jungle-fowl, a wild rooster, on this trip.

Jungle trekking is the most popular activity here, with groups going out to sleep in hides or caves. Check the details and the reviews. These can be as short as one night or as long as seven, depending on how far in you go, and you’ll generally have to carry your gear which can weigh you down. You will sweat a lot, so drink plenty of water, but don’t worry too much about smelling like a durian; guesthouses are plenty used to greeting travellers whose next port of call is the shower.

I’ve not heard great things about rapid shooting, canoeing with splashing the other boat, and visits to Orang Asli settlements, which are apparently as fake as human zoos can get.

-Stay in Danz’s tents, not opting for full-board.

-Use their shuttle service for free rides into town and eat at the local places on the main strip.

-Go on the night safari through Tahan Makmur.

-Wander around the paths near Mutiara.

-Go on a jungle trek which includes a stay in Kumbang Hide.

-Take the old bus between KT and Jerantut.

Taman Negara, Pahang

Taman Negara, Pahang

Introduction and history Malaysia’s Taman Negara, is classified as one of the world’s oldest rainforests. Older than either the Amazon or the Congo, it has remained undisturbed for 130 million years. Located near the equator it is the most extensive protected area of pristine, lowland, evergreen rainforest in the country. Lying within the headwaters of three river systems, the Tembeling in the south the Terengganu in the east and the Relai-Aring-Labir in the north, this vibrant rainforest receives rain throughout the year, approximately 2,200mm (lowland) and 3,800mm (highland). The average temperature is 22°C to 26°C.

Taman Negara originated from Pahang State Legislation in the Jerantut district. In 1925, an area of 9,240 hectares surrounding Tahan Mountain was declared Tahan Mountain Game Reserve by the British authority and a national park in 1938, comprising of three states, Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu. Over 1300 square kilometers of thick tropical jungles was designated “THE GUNUNG TAHAN GAME RESERVE” and named “KING GEORGE V NATIONAL PARK”, after the King of England.

The creation of this park was due largely to the persistence of one man, Theodore Hubback, Chief Game Warden of what was then the Federated Malay States. He pestered the colonial government relentlessly for 15 years until the region was set aside for conservation in 1938. His enthusiasm was carried on by subsequent state and federal governments, and by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. Now, it covers a total of 4,343 sq km.

After independence in 1957, the name was later changed to Taman Negara. The stated purpose of Taman Negara is “to utilize the land within the park in perpetuity, for the propagation, protection and preservation of indigenous flora and fauna”.

Taman Negara lies on sedimentary rock, with some granite and scattered limestone. Interesting to note that a large part of Malaysia was submerged under water several million years ago and that, volcanic and non volcanic islands emerged and submerged from time to time. Peninsular Malaysia only became land during the Jurassic era. Sedimentary rocks yield fossils and the bulk of the fossils are found in Taman Negara.

Ten percent is lowland, below 120m with many huge trees, the majority of which is covered with lowland dipterocarpaceous forest. There are around 14,000 species of plants, 250 species of birds, 200 mammals and as many as 240 species of trees that can be found within a single hectare, compared with an average of seven for a European forest.

Evidence of human habitation within part of Taman Negara almost 2,000 years ago came with the discovery of bronze artifacts along the Tembeling River. One small group of Orang Asli (Original People) the nomadic Negrito Batek still live within the border of the park, gathering wild food and hunting with blowpipes for countless generations. In recent years however, they have been settled by the government in villages, and visits to these settlements can be arranged.

Flora & Fauna Hiding in the very dense vegetation are the wild ox, gaur (dark in color apart from white ankle socks), sambar deer, barking deer, mouse deer (not much larger than a rabbit), wild boars, Malayan tapirs (related to horses and rhinos but more pig-like in appearance), clouded leopards, leopard cats, tigers, sun bears (these feed on fruit, honey, termites.), Sumatran rhinoceros, civets, Asian elephants (smaller ears and more hump-backed than African elephants), bats, nocturnal civets (these often beg for food from tourists), squirrel, tree show, a wide variety of primates, vast numbers of reptiles and amphibians, and 250-300 species of birds.

The list of wild animals in the National Park is endless. However, the possibility of not seeing anything exciting in a week besides mosquitoes, leeches and steaming piles of elephant dung is common. It is the matter of luck and timing to spot the wildlife here. There are six wildlife hide-outs for nature lovers, built around the many salt-licks.

Insects Crawling beneath the leaves, in the underground or in rotten tree trunks, bug lovers will find a huge diversity of millions of tropical insects here.

Commonly seen butterfly species are Five-bar Swordtail, which congregate at areas such as campsites, banks of streams, or along paths where foodstuffs have been dropped. Perhaps the most common insects are the ants and termites. The Giant forest ant, Camponotus gigas, is a rather solitary species which prefers to scavenge the forest floor. Some specimens can reach over two inches in length, but despite their huge size they are harmless and will not bite humans.

Termites and ants form extensive colonies and if you take a closer look, you can witness millions of busy termites on the forest floor digesting rotten wood, returning the nutrients to the soil; thus serving as an important species of the rainforest ecology. Without them, the forests would not survive for each new tree needs the nutrients of the fallen ones.

When the sun goes down, you will be entertained by the wildlife orchestra, the hooting of the owls and the reverberating call of the crickets, such as the Oriental Mole Cricket that inhabit burrows.

Birds For many, the attraction of Taman Negara is the abundant bird life, comprising of over 350 species. Though many forest species live secretive lives, either foraging in the undergrowth or hiding up in the canopy, at times these species may visit more open areas when there are flowers or blossoming trees. Perhaps the easiest place to spot the diversity of birds is right at your resort, where trees may have been planted to attract birds. These sites will be active early in the morning.

The observant visitor may encounter such exotic species as the Crested Fireback (a type of pheasant) and the Great Argus as it performs in its dancing ground. Hornbills are often seen, including the Wreathed, Great Argus and Indian Pied Hornbill; the Rhinoceros Hornbill is perhaps the most dramatic of all, with its huge red, orange and yellow casque. During the winter migration season, when birds from North Asia move south to warmer climes, the rare and unusual Masked Finfoot may be sighted along the banks of Taman Negara’s rivers. Keep an eye out too for the attractive Black and Red Broadbill, and other Southeast Asian forest birds including Leafbirds, Trogons, the Asian Fairy Bluebird, Barbets, Minivets and Woodpeckers.

11 Amazing Animals You Can See in Taman Negara, Malaysia

Taman Negara, Malaysia

Taman Negara is one of Malaysia’s national parks frequently visited by nature lovers and adventurers. The luscious rainforest is home to some amazing wildlife. Here are some eye-catching animals that you might well encounter in Taman Negara.

Also known as Indian bison, gaur – seladang (Bos gaurus) in Malay – is the tallest among the wild cattle species. With its massive strong body, it roams around in the dense rainforest and rivers to search for food such as grasses, bushes, and trees. These bison normally stick together in small herds, led by an older adult female.

Gaur spotted in Taman Negara

Water Buffalo

Water buffalo hang out by the rivers of Taman Negara where the deep water cools them down in Malaysia’s tropical climate. You may be lucky to see them from afar while crossing the rivers especially during boat rides and water rafting. They have long faces, black skin, strong limbs, and their horns grow upwards or downwards. Don’t get too close as they will get aggressive.

You will almost certainly get to see pitta while birdwatching in Kuala Tahan and Merapoh. Among the most popular pittas that you will be able to spot are Garnett Pitta, Banded Pitta, and Blue-winged Pitta. Each pitta species has its own vibrant markings on their heads, breast, back, and wings. The pitta have made Taman Negara their home because of forestation in other areas. Spot these birds at Jenut Muda Trail, Tembeling River Trail, and Bukit Teresek Trail.

Keep your eyes out for Pitta while birdwatching in Taman Negara

Malayan Peacock-Pheasant

The Malayan peacock-pheasant is also known as the crested peacock-pheasant; it is a medium-sized pheasant with a short tail and shiny emerald eyes. Their feathers are light brownish with small black spots and bands and large emerald colour spots. The female is smaller than the male. They casually walk along the trails and cackle in conversation. They are listed as one of defenceless animals due to habitat loss in forests.

Long-tailed Marque Monkey

These monkeys have long tails and like to relax in small groups in the trees. They are one of the most widespread primate species in Malaysia due to their tolerance of the tropical climate. They are normally grey-brown or reddish brown. At times, they can be aggressive when they see food. You often see the baby holding onto its mother’s chest while she protects her child. Ensure that you do not leave your food alone as they will happily help themselves!

A family of long-tailed marque monkeys

Malayan Tapir

Taman Negara’s mascot Malayan Tapir has a long nose and is black and white. Although it has poor eyesight, this friendly herbivorous animal can detect food through its sense of smell. It slowly moves around in the rainforest in search of shoots and leaves, particularly at night. They might drop by at the accommodations, rivers, and some parts of the rainforest to say hello and welcome you to the park.

Barking Deer

The oldest wild deer, barking deer or muntjancs, are named for their barking sound. They eat grass, fruits, shoots, seeds, birds’ eggs, and small animals. Their bark is heard when they sense predators nearby. Male barking deer fight against each other with antlers to win territory. You are most likely to see them deep in the Taman Negara’s rainforest. Be aware as they might be aggressive during rutting season.

Barking Deer might hang around near Taman Negara’s accommodations or at deep rainforests

You will surely encounter woodpeckers pecking away on tree trunks, usually you will hear them before you spot them. The most common woodpecker species which you will see are Common Flame-backed Woodpecker, Great Slaty Woodpecker, and Olive-backed Woodpecker at Kuala Tahan. These vibrant coloured birds will fly by to take their place in the trees or houses’ wooden posts as their hangout spots.

Busy woodpecker pecking on tree trunk

Various butterflies flutter beautifully in the tropical rainforest. Their colourful wings are not only pretty to the travellers’ eyes but are used as defense against predators. You will notice them gently balanced on rough ground, tree trunks, and delicate leaves and flowers. They are irresistibly beautiful and you won’t be able to resist taking out your phone or camera to get a picture of them.

Blue Butterfly

The sun bears, known as honey bears, love to eat honeycomb and honey. They also feed on small insects and fruits and find their favourite food by using their sense of smell. They are the smallest bear with black fur and as they live in tropical rainforests, they do not hibernate. They are among the animals endangered by deforestation. You might find them crossing paths as you hike along the rainforest trails.

Full Guide To Taman Negara National Park [Must Read!]

A massive national park in the centre of Peninsular Malaysia, Taman Negara National Park is the perfect place to get outdoors and enjoy the natural attractions that Malaysia offers. From thick rainforest to deep caves, this park is a dream come true for outdoor enthusiasts.

Calculated to be around 130 million years old, Taman Negara, Malaysia is home to one of the world’s oldest rainforests as well as the highest point in Peninsular Malaysia, Gunung Tahan, which is over 2000 metres above sea level.

This is the place to head to see the natural beauty of Malaysia.

The gorgeous scenery on the way to Lata Berkoh Taman Negara

Taman Negara actually translates to “National Park” in English. You’re going to love this place. It’s only a few hours from Kuala Lumpur but feels a whole world away.

Below, you will find our full Taman Negara Pahang blog so you can have the best time possible in this gorgeous destination. I also share a video of Taman Negara so you can have a quick overview of what you can see and do here.

You can also listen to our podcast episode all about Taman Negara here.

Is Taman Negara Worth Visiting?

Taman Negara park is definitely worth visiting. It has so many unique attractions, and its protected status makes it one of the most attractive spots in Malaysia for spotting wildlife and enjoying nature.

From hiking to boat rides to exploring caves and meeting with indigenous tribes, Taman Negara Malaysia national park is filled with incredible experiences for the whole family.

Taman Negara Video Review

You can see a quick overview of what it’s like in Taman Negara in the following video. We walk you through the journey here from KL, staying at the Mutiara Taman Negara and some of the most popular activities like the Canopy Walk, Lata Berkoh and visiting an Orang Asli settlement.

You can find more videos like this on our YouTube channel. Please subscribe here!

How Long Should You Spend At Taman Negara National Park?

Taman Negara Canopy Walk

How long you should spend in Taman Negara national park Malaysia depends on where you’re coming from and what you plan to do. The national park Taman Negara spreads to over 4,000 square kilometres so it’s wise to plan your journey in advance.

If you’re traveling from Kuala Lumpur then it’s possible to do a day trip and partake in the main attractions like meeting with the Orang Asli (indigenous tribes), rapid shooting and walking on the Canopy Walkway.

For exploring the Taman Negara rainforest further, it’s worth spending a couple of nights. This way you can take your time hiking and seeing the jungle at night in all its glory.

You don’t really need more than a few nights to appreciate this area.

Taman Negara Map

The Taman Negara location is roughly in the centre of Peninsular Malaysia. It is spread over three states with the largest area in Pahang, followed by Kelantan and then Terengganu.

Below is a Taman Negara national park map so that you can get a better idea of the park’s position as well as a map of the main trails that you can take without a guide.

Taman Negara National Park map

Getting To Taman Negara From KL

Kuala Lumpur is located 3 hours to the southwest of Malaysia national park Taman Negara. Whilst traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Taman Negara national park is easy, there is no direct route unless you take private transport.

Your options include taxi, bus, car, train and boat for part of the journey.

Kuala Tahan Taman Negara

When it comes to travelling here, you need to head to Kuala Tahan. Kuala Tahan is a small town on the edge of the park with the easiest access to all the attractions and activities discussed here. There are shops, accommodation and restaurants in Kuala Tahan or you can stay at Mutiara Taman Negara which is the only hotel in the park (and the best quality accommodation in this area).

The cheapest way to get to Taman Negara from Kuala Lumpur is to take a bus. There are two major operators – Han Travel and NKS Shuttle – both of which can take you either all the way to Kuala Tahan or drop you at Kuala Tembeling where you then hop on a boat from the Kuala Tembeling jetty to Kuala Tahan.

This is a long day of travel starting at 8am and arriving around 5pm, so it’s only for people with an overnight Taman Negara stay.

You can find this shuttle here.

Jerantut Bus Station

Alternatively, you can take a public bus as far as Jenantut and then take another bus or a taxi to Kuala Tahan. Han Travel and NKS Shuttle both operate these services from Jerantut. When I was last here, the bus was RM30 per person (which quickly dropped to RM25 when I said no) and a taxi was RM80.

You can find prices and times for the bus to Jerantut here.

If you’re looking to travel by train to Taman Negara national park from Kuala Lumpur, you can take a train to Gemas from KL Sentral Station, transfer to the service to Jerantut and then take a taxi or bus from there to Kauala Tahan.

For the most direct Taman Negara travel route you’ll need to drive or take a taxi to Kuala Tahan. Driving can take 3 to 4 hours but is easy. A private taxi is the priciest option.

You can book your private taxi here and we can give you the current prices.

Taking the boat from Kuala Tahan to Taman Negara

However you get to Kuala Tahan, to access Taman Negara, you need to take a quick boat ride across the river from the jetty in town. This costs RM1 per person and runs frequently.

You can find our full guide to getting from KL to Taman Negara here.

The easiest option is a private taxi or shuttle bus. There are many operators which include Taman Negara guided tours in their transport cost. This is the best way to do all the Taman Negara Pahang activities in a day trip.

Read our full guide to Taman Negara tours here.

Taman Negara: How To Get There From Everywhere Else

The closest major town to Taman Negara is Jerantut, which is just a one hour drive away. Alternatively you can also get transport to Kuala Tembeling and take a boat into the national park from here. Kuala Tembeling is 17 kilometres from Jerantut. This is a scenic way to travel, and it takes 3 hours.

From Cameron Highlands, it’s possible to take a bus (which is long but cheaper) or a taxi (which is more expensive but also more direct). You could also drive the 5.5 hour journey yourself, stopping along the way.

You can find our full guide to how to get from Cameron Highlands to Taman Negara here.

If you’re heading from either Singapore or Johor Bahru, you could consider taking the aptly named Jungle Railway. This train starts from Johor Bahru and takes you as far as Jerantut, where you can then get a bus or taxi to the national park.

However, this departs and arrives in the middle of the night so it’s not a convenient option.

Walking through Taman Negara

EXACTLY How To Get From Cameron Highlands To Taman Negara [2024]

Taman negara kuala tahan.

Kuala Tahan is the main entry point into Taman Negara. It is directly across the river from the Park Centre. It costs RM1 to take a boat across as described above.

Kuala Tahan is a small village but has several accommodation options, as well as services like a grocery store, cafe, police station and restaurants.

From Kuala Tahan, you can also take a boat ride to many other spots in the national park such as Telinga Cave, which is just a 10 minute boat ride followed by a 20 minute hike. There are plenty of other options too.

What Is The Taman Negara Entrance Fee?

The Taman Negara price is very affordable. Visitors need to pay for a Park Entry Permit and Camera License, valid for 30 days.

Entry to Taman Negara is RM1 with an additional RM5 fee for bringing a camera/phone. There is a RM10 fishing license fee per rod if you wish to fish.

Taman Negara Park Centre at the entrance to the park in Mutiara Taman Negara Resort

You need to pay for this permit before taking any hikes or any tours into the park.

You buy these permits at the Park Centre which is a short walk from where the boat drops you off when you cross the river in the Mutiara Taman Negara Resort.

Taman Negara Activities

As Malaysia’s largest national park and a major ecotourism destination, Taman Negara has many unique and exciting activities on offer. Best of all, most of these are less than a few kilometres walk from the park centre.

Below are some of the top things to do during your visit . You can read our full guide to things to do in Taman Negara here.

Taman Negara Hiking Trails

Walking through Taman Negara

As Malaysia’s largest national park, a Taman Negara hike is one of the top things to do here. There are many beautiful and inspiring tracks with varying levels of difficulty.

From Kuala Tahan, you may opt to climb Bukit Teresek. At 334 metres tall, the track to the top starts flat and becomes quite steep. Much of it is on a boardwalk and you’re rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding hills and mountains at the summit.

Lubok Simpon Taman Negara

Or, you could walk to Lubok Simpon where you’ll find a calming tannin dyed pool for swimming. It’s just 30 minutes from the Park Centre. Or venture further to the cave of Gua Telinga, just 3 kilometres away from Kuala Tahan.

There are many other walks and no matter where you go, you’ll be able to see numerous bird species and other wildlife from the observation hides.

The shorter walks near the Park Centre, like Lubok Simpon and Bukit Teresek are easy to walk yourself or you can join a tour. For longer walks, you need a guide.

Taman Negara Night Safari

Taman Negara national park at night

A night safari is worth adding to your Taman Negara visit. See how the jungle changes at night by taking a walk from Kuala Tahan to the salt lick at Tahan Hide.

You can wait in an observation hide until wildlife come out to replenish their minerals. You can also see a number of nocturnal animals including snakes, lizards, spiders and lorises.

As an alternative to walking, consider taking a 4WD tour through the Taman Negara forest. These tours can take you deeper into the jungle where you can spot even rarer nocturnal animals.

Taman Negara Rapid Shooting

Taman Negara National Park rapid shooting

Thrill seekers will love rapid shooting which involves jumping in a Taman Negara boat and sailing through seven sets of rapids. This exciting Taman Negara boat ride includes high speed turns, fast sailing and often races with other boats.

Prepare to get wet! It’s the ultimate way to cool down 🙂

Taman Negara Fishing

Fishing at Taman Negara

If fishing is your thing, then Taman Negara in Malaysia offers excellent fishing particulary in the dry months.

You can pick up an inexpensive permit, hire some gear and then jump on a boat and head to one of the popular fishing spots like Rincing, Kuala Perkai or Rawa.

Taman Negara Waterfall

If seeing a waterfall is on your Taman Negara itinerary, then you’re in for a treat. Four Steps Waterfall is a phenomenal sight, but there’s a catch – it’s located 50 kilometres away by hike! This waterfall is best visited as part of multi-day Taman Negara trekking tours.

The hike is worth it. When you arrive there are rocks to sit on and appreciate the awe inspiring power of the waterfall.

Cruise And Hike To Lata Berkoh

Lata Berkoh Taman Negara

My absolute favourite of the Taman Negara activities to take a cruise to Lata Berkoh. The main attraction of this tour is the amazing scenery, and it is oh-so-beautiful. The first photo at the top of this article is from this cruise.

I think it’s the best way to enjoy the beauty of this area.

The tour starts with a stop at the hug Tualang Tree. At 65 metres tall, it’s massive! You can also stop at Kelah Sanctuary to feed fish when fish are available.

Part of the hike to Lata Berkoh Taman Negara

You then keep cruising upstream until you hit a 20-minute hiking trail that takes you to Lata Berkoh itself. This is easy enough to walk (my 6 year old did it without any issues). At the end, you can take a swim at Lata Berkoh.

You then need to hike back and take the boat back to Kuala Tahan.

All up, this cruise is a great way to get closer to all the beautiful nature in Taman Negara both by foot and by boat.

Canopy Walkway

Taman Negara Canopy Walk

The Canopy Walk is the most popular attraction in Taman Negara. Amongst the longest in the world, the Taman Negara bridge spans over 550 metres and rises up to 45 metres above the ground.

Spine tingling in sections, the canopy walkway is the best way to appreciate this vast and ancient rainforest from above – as well as spot Taman Negara wildlife!

It’s also a nice 30-minute walk in each direction into the park so it’s great for a quick look and decent hike through Taman Negara.

It’s closed on Fridays.

Exploring The Jungle Heart Of Malaysia In Taman Negara

Episode 17: Exploring The Jungle Heart Of Malaysia In Taman Negara

Taman negara tours and packages.

Since it’s a little more complicated to get to Taman Negara and many activities require guides and equipment, it is recommended to do a tour to Taman Negara or a package tour over multiple days.

You can find our full guide to Taman Negara tours here .

Taman Negara Animals

One of the top things to do in Taman Negara is see wildlife, and there are observation hides scattered around built for this purpose.

Taman Negara has a particularly great bird population, with hundreds of species found within the national park. Over 400 species have been identified and among those are many vulnerable and endangered species. It doesn’t take long to spot birds when walking from Kuala Tahan.

Kelah Sanctuary Taman Negara

Fish are also plentiful here. The easiest place to spot fish is the Kelah Sanctuary in Lubuk Tenor where you can feed them and see schools of fish in the dry season.

Other animals include wild boar, lorises, water buffalo, macaques, deer and much more. Of course, spotting some of these are rarer than others, and you may have to do more Taman Negara jungle trekking to see them. The longer you stay and further the trek, the more likely you are to see these animals.

On our casual visit with kids, we only saw macaques and birds. The day before, there had been elephants visible on the Lata Berkoh cruise though!

Where To Stay In Taman Negara, Pahang/Kuala Tahan

Spending a night in Taman Negara is one of the best ways to experience this national park and to take advantage of all that it has to offer. Below are our recommendations and Taman Negara review of where to stay.

Mutiara Taman Negara Resort

Mutiara Taman Negara

Mutiara Taman Negara is the only place to stay in the national park and the best accommodation option in the area. This is where you can rent a lovely Taman Negara chalet and enjoy one of the best locations of any accommodation.

This charming resort offers a riverfront setting and an on-site restaurant with great food. Many rooms offer half board. There is also strong wifi available, and we were amazed how good it was even in our chalet on the edge of the resort.

Chalets are private, space out and fit into the surrounds, with space for up to 6 guests in some chalets. They are a little basic for a 4 star resort, but comfortable, clean and easy.

Xcape Resort at Taman Negara

taman negara wildlife tour

For standard accommodation, consider Xcape Resort at Taman Negara. This accommodation is positioned close to a local travel agent in Kuala Tahan who can help you arrange your trip.

The accommodation includes a number of room types to choose from catering to several budgets. Among these are double, twin, and family. There is also a nice swimming pool and a restaurant and bar.

Rooms are very affordable and breakfast is included.

Abot Guest House

taman negara wildlife tour

Abot Guest House is great if you’re looking for an affordable Taman Negara backpacking option. This is simple accommodation with standard rooms including double, triple and quadruple occupancy.

All rooms include a private bathroom, free WiFi and daily housekeeping. On-site, there is a simple restaurant, guest BBQ and gift shop.

Best of all, Abot Guest House is located in Kuala Tahan just across the river from the Park Centre.

Mutiara Taman Negara

Mutiara Taman Negara Review: Everything You Need To Know About Staying Here

Taman negara camping.

If you’re looking to camp in Taman Negara, there are designated campsites with facilities like bathrooms and restaurants nearby. These include Mutiara camp site, Danz Eco Camp site and AsiaCamp Taman Negara. They are all located close to Kuala Tahan.

For campers looking to get more wild, Lubuk Tenor is a good option, as well as Kepayang Besar Cave and many other spots along the Tembeling River. For this option, you’ll need to bring all your gear with you as there are no camping facilities in these spots.

Taman Negara Weather And Best Time To Visit

While Taman Negara is warm year round ranging from 24 to 35 degrees on average, it does receive heavy rainfall in the monsoon season. This can impact any hiking you plan to do, and many activities may be unavailable, such as the Canopy Walkway.

The monsoon season spans from mid November to mid January. If you’re planning to visit Taman Negara in December it might be better to consider activities closer to Kuala Tahan if you don’t want to take any Taman Negara malaria risk.

The driest season is February through to October where rain is less likely. However, the park does receive rain year round.

In our opinion, the best time to visit is between June and September as rain is less likely and it’s hot. However, this is the busiest time so accommodation and attractions may be more busy.

We found Taman Negara to be very humid in April, and we sweated a lot! We didn’t get bitten by mosquitoes at all though.

Top Tips For Visiting Taman Negara Malaysia

  • Dress accordingly. Lightweight clothes are recommended year round for the warm weather and humidity. However, consider wearing long shirts and pants to protect yourself from insects and leeches.
  • Bring ample supplies. There is a small grocery store for basics in Kuala Tahan, but for more specific items, bring them with you. We recommend your own torch for a night safari as well as insect repellent and sunscreen.
  • Plan your trip ahead. This will make the journey much more enjoyable especially if you have limited time to explore.
  • Bring money with you. There are no banks or ATMs in Kuala Tahan. Bring all the cash you need with you.

Final Words

We hope you have enjoyed our guide to Taman Negara and have plenty of ideas for your visit. We loved visiting this area of Malaysia, and I’m sure you will too.

However, the best way to connect with Taman Negara is to visit yourself!

Head to Kuala Tahan, pick up a Taman Negara trail map from the Park Centre and start exploring this ancient rainforest.

You can find more information on other destinations in Malaysia across this site here.

Private Taman Negara Tour

Taman Negara National Park translates simply as ‘national park’ in Malay! This is perhaps the most popular rainforest within Malaysia, and among the best preserved in all of Southeast Asia. Wild residents you are sure to witness include Malayan tapirs, herds of elephant, sambar deer, muntjacs, and wild oxen (Sela dang), among other exotic creatures. Taman Negara National Park is home to the endangered Sumatran rhino and the Sumatran tiger, although they are not very easy to spot in these dense jungles. The nearly 400 resident bird species of this lowland rainforest are other colorful treasures to watch out for. The park is also home to some of the most ancient and diverse plant life still in existence around the world.
