When Iron Maiden Opened for Kiss on the ‘Unmasked’ Tour
Two of the biggest names in hard-rock history — Kiss and Iron Maiden — embarked on a European tour together between Aug. 29 and Oct. 13, 1980. At the time, Iron Maiden was just a fledgling outfit.
Just months removed from releasing their eponymous LP, they were still hustling to distinguish themselves from other New Wave of British Heavy Metal hopefuls. As for headliners, the self-appointed “hottest band in the land” was then facing a severe downturn in their career fortunes, as they toured behind their poorly received (and misleadingly titled) Unmasked album.
In other words, everything was in place for a very eventful tour. But let’s back up just a little bit first.
The wheels started coming off the previously unstoppable Kiss wagon as early as 1978, beginning with all four members’ ambitious but ill-fated solo albums , made worse by 1979’s fan-dividing, disco-tinted Dynasty and reaching a crisis point by early 1980, as drummer Peter Criss checked out, refusing to even play (or depending on who you ask, being totally incapable of playing) on that year’s Unmasked .
By the time Kiss performed an intimate warm-up show at New York’s Palladium on July 25, Unmasked was looking very much like a new commercial low, and Eric Carr had officially taken over drum duties from the fired Criss.
Then it was off to Europe, where Kiss had rarely ventured before (their elaborate stage production being quite expensive to transport) and where Carr, Gene Simmons , Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley would meet their opening act for the first time on their joint tour’s opening night, on Aug. 29, in Rome.
What they saw in vocalist Paul Di’Anno, guitarists Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton, bassist Steve Harris and drummer Clive Burr was a hungry and apparently fearless group of East London toughs. Brimming with confidence after a well-received appearance at England’s Reading Festival, Iron Maiden was ready to challenge Kiss on stage night after night.
To their credit, Kiss had never hesitated to pick the hottest young bands as their special guests ( AC/DC , Judas Priest , Cheap Trick ) and, by all accounts, they were very welcoming and professional.
According to Iron Maiden’s authorized biography, Run to the Hills , Kiss bassist Gene Simmons made a point of visiting his special guests’ dressing room early in the tour to praise their debut album. When challenged by Maiden’s impertinent Di’Anno as to whether Gene had even heard it, Simmons immediately rattled off all the song titles – in order.
This camaraderie was misconstrued with dire circumstances by Stratton, who took to spending more time and even traveling between shows with Kiss’ road crew instead of his own bandmates. Stratton would later play this down as his gregarious nature. His fellow bandmates, however, were already sensing increasing musical differences in the four-to-five-year age gap separating them from Dennis. They began to wonder if perhaps he wasn’t the right man for the job.
After winding their way together through Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland, back to Germany, then over to the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, Kiss and Iron Maiden finally went their separate ways after Oct. 13. Kiss headed to Australia for what would prove to be Frehley’s final shows until their '90s reunion, while Iron Maiden returned to the U.K. where they promptly dismissed Stratton and replaced him with Adrian Smith.
Kiss and Iron Maiden’s trajectories would follow largely different roads over the ensuing decade, with Kiss finally coming clean on their threat to take the makeup off and enjoying a platinum career comeback, while Maiden grew from strength to strength, becoming arguably that decade’s definitive heavy metal band.
So it’s of course always intriguing to look back at the two bands’ European tour in the fall of 1980 as a passing of the torch, in some respects, from one generation of hard-rock warriors to the next, while their lucky European fans looked on in wonder.

“My being fired was premature… We’d wrapped pre-production on Killers but I never got the chance to record”: Meet Dennis Stratton, the man who brought harmony guitars to Iron Maiden
Armed with a Les Paul Custom copy and an obscenely heavy old combo amp, Stratton only discovered metal when he joined the future giants – and left them the legacy of harmony guitar attack
Since 1980, when Iron Maiden dropped their self-titled debut onto the masses, the London-bred NWOBHM icons have been defined by a multi-guitar attack.
During the band’s heyday, that was delivered by Adrian Smith and Dave Murray, and later, Murray and Janick Gers, who arrived in 1990 after Smith departed. When Smith returned in ’99, it became a triple-guitar attack.
But prior to that, Murray was positioned alongside Dennis Stratton, who says he brought the band’s definitive approach to the forefront. “I was never totally heavy metal like the other guys in Maiden were,” Stratton tells Guitar World .
“I listened to heavy rock like Whitesnake, Bad Company and UFO, but they weren’t really heavy metal. I brought a few things to Maiden that they still use today. They still use the harmony guitar style, which they weren’t doing before me. I’m very proud that whatever I took into Maiden, it’s still there.”
After leaving Maiden, Stratton formed Lionheart, who made a record in ’84 called Hot Tonight , before disbanding a few years later, when he joined a rebooted Praying Mantis in 1990, remaining until 2003. From there, he laid low until reforming Lionheart.
Two new records – Second Nature (2017) and The Reality of Miracles (2020) followed – and now the band has released another, The Grace Of A Dragonfly .
“It’s a concept album,” Stratton says. “People are saying it's about war, but not about war; it's about the people who fought in wars that served their countries – who sacrificed their lives during the war so that we can live a free life.”

Asked how he approaches the guitar in Lionheart compared to his days in Maiden, he shrugs. “I’m kind of off-the-cuff still,” he admits. “But I still look to add soaring harmony guitars and brilliant things that generate interest.
“I’m not the sort of guitarist who is angry or trying to outplay everyone. I do the best I can, but the arthritis kicks in now and again in my wrists and fingers. I’ve matured enough to where I can work around that. Beyond that, I compliment the song and let the rest care for itself.”
What sparked your interest in heavy metal?
“Probably joining Iron Maiden! I was into hard rock. Steve Harris and Dave Murray would come to watch me play with a band I was in at the Bridge House pub on Sunday nights, and that’s where we met in ’79.
“Maiden had just signed a deal with EMI, and after seeing me play, they asked me to join. When I joined, there was only Steve, Dave, and [vocalist] Paul Di’Anno, but then they got me, and we found Clive Burr on drums. Off we went.”
Maiden’s self-titled debut is a favorite of many. It sounds like – despite your differences in taste – you got on well.
“I was quite lucky because Steve and Dave already knew what I did, who I was and how I played. Even though I’d never played metal before, I could take what I knew and feel comfortable.
“All the bands I’d been in were tremendous and had two-part harmony guitars, so I could take that into Maiden and introduce it to them.”
Was the chemistry between you and Dave immediate?
“More or less. It was quite lucky that they knew what I was like and that I could bring the harmony in, and because of that we got along fine.”
What gear did you use on Maiden’s debut?
“I had an old HH amp that was kind of like a Fender Twin Reverb – but obviously not a Fender. It was this great old combo amp , and I got great tones out of it.
Ace Frehley would only come out of his dressing room when Kiss were about to go on stage. So, sadly, I didn’t have many words with him
“I also have a Silvertone Twin from the ‘60s that I put great big JBL cone speakers into. The thing weighed a ton; once we went out on the road, the crew didn’t like it!”
Did you deploy any effects pedals?
“Oh, yeah, I had a few foot pedals. All of them were very old, and I can’t remember the brand of any of them. I know I had a reverb pedal , but the amp also had reverb. The way I got distortion was I kind of pushed the amp and got a lot through using gain. For the most part, the pedal I used was an old chorus pedal , which was great for clean sounds.”
Do you recall what guitar you used while recording classic songs like Iron Maiden and Transylvania ?
“For the entire record, I used just my one Les Paul Custom. I liked that guitar as I was a big fan of [Free’s] Paul Kossoff, and he used one just like it. Paul collected Les Paul guitars. He had so many of them, and I fell in love with them.
“But mine wasn’t a Gibson; it was a Zenta Les Paul Custom copy. I bought a real Gibson Les Paul Custom once we went on tour, along with a Gibson Firebird, which I thought looked flashy and in line with the metal scene.”
On that tour, Iron Maiden opened for Kiss. What was that like?
“It was fantastic. Maiden hopped on as openers for Kiss’s European tour while they were promoting Unmasked , I believe. We had so many fans at the shows to see us, and we put on a great show. I think that’s why Kiss decided not to have us support them in the UK – we had too many fans coming to see us!”
Did you get on well with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons?
“Oh, yeah, I got on really well with Paul and Gene. We used to have lots of chats backstage. When we went to Stockholm in October of 1980, Gene and Paul took me to dinner for my birthday with Dave Murray. That was quite a special treat for me.”
And how about your fellow guitarist, Ace Frehley?
“Ace played great on that tour – but unfortunately, he was very, very quiet. He never really came out of his dressing room at all, so I only got to meet him a few times for a few moments.
I don’t regret how it was… you’ve got to admire what Maiden have done
“I got a few photos with him, but he would really only come out of his dressing room when Kiss were about to go on stage. So, sadly, I didn’t have many words with him. But Eric Carr was brilliant and very kind.”
There have been conflicting reports regarding your departure from Iron Maiden. Can you settle the score?
“The truth is that I never saw eye-to-eye with Rod Smallwood, who managed Maiden back then. He was basically the headmaster, which was really about trying to keep five young kids together. I was older than the other guys, so I was used to having my freedom, which caused issues.”
“Sometimes I’d travel from gig to gig with just the crew for a laugh or a change of scenery. And then, sometimes I’d go from venue to venue in one of the trucks with a driver, just to keep them company, to see different parts of the world, and for different sorts of conversations. But Rod didn’t like that.”
Do you regret not sticking around, considering how massive Iron Maiden became?
“No, I don’t regret how it was. At the end of the day, Maiden were a new band, and it was all about gelling and learning. It wasn’t just musical learning, but learning habits and all that.
“But my being fired was premature because we hadn’t been together long enough. When I was fired, we’d already wrapped pre-production on the second album, Killers . I’d worked on the whole album but I never got the chance to record.
“The entire thing was premature, but what’s done is done. You’ve got to admire what Maiden have done, how far they’ve come and how big they are.”

When Iron Maiden Warmed up for Kiss (Music)
*HEAVY METAL*

Something about their rhythm hits so close to home and we can't wait to be on a tour with them for the first time. America, we will see you very soon and be prepared for the mind-blowing shows we will bring to you!"

In 2019, an NPR story put a spotlight on "a band from Mongolia that blends the screaming guitars of heavy metal and traditional Mongolian guttural singing," accurately highlighting the cultural importance and unique musical identity of THE HU . Founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, The HU — comprised of producer Dashka along with members Gala , Jaya , Temka and Enkush — are a modern rock group rooted in the tradition of their homeland. The band's name translates to the Mongolian root word for "human being," and their unique approach blends instruments like the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle),Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar),Tumur Khuur (jaw harp) and throat singing with contemporary sounds, creating a unique sonic profile that they call "Hunnu Rock."
Their debut album, 2019's "The Gereg" , debuted at No. 1 on the World Album and Top New Artist charts while receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Billboard , NPR , GQ , The Guardian , The Independent , Revolver and even Sir Elton John himself. Their appeal was instantly recognized globally with sold-out tours across the world in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia and acknowledged by their home country who awarded them Mongolia's highest state award, The Order Of Genghis Khan, which was granted to the band by the president of Mongolia, Khaltmaagiin Battulga , in 2020.
A deluxe version of "The Gereg" included collaborations with Jacoby Shaddix of PAPA ROACH and Lzzy Hale of HALESTORM , and caught the attention of METALLICA , who heard their Mongolian rendition of "Sad But True" and then enlisted them to take part on their "Metallica Blacklist" album, released in 2021 with THE HU 's cover of "Through The Never" alongside other high-profile guest artists like Miley Cyrus , Chris Stapleton , Phoebe Bridgers , J Balvin , St. Vincent and many more. The band was also made "canon" in the "Star Wars" fandom after they wrote and recorded an original song for EA Games ' "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order" which was featured in its gameplay.
THE HU released their second album "Rumble Of Thunder" while continuing to tour across the globe, adding in dates in Japan and festival appearances at Coachella , Lollapalooza , Download festival and more. In November of 2022, THE HU became the first-ever rock/metal band to receive the prestigious UNESCO "Artist Of Peace" designation at UNESCO 's headquarters in Paris, FR by UNESCO director-general Audrey Azoulay . Previous recipients include Celine Dion , Shirley Bassey , Sarah Brightman , Herbie Hancock , Marcus Miller and World Orchestra For Peace .
To date, THE HU have accumulated hundreds of millions of combined streams and video views.

"America, we will see you very soon": Mongolian folk metal sensations The Hu to support Iron Maiden on expanded North American Future Past Tour
Iron Maiden's Future Past World Tour gets bigger with the addition of a new date and support from viral Mongolian metallers The Hu
Bruce Dickinson might be busy with his solo work right now, but the Iron Maiden machine is firing back into gear for 2024.
The band have just announced an additional date for their upcoming North American leg of the The Future Past World Tour at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on October 9.
Maiden also confirmed this was the final North American show to be added to this tour, set to begin in San Diego on October 4 and run until November 17, when it will wrap up San Antonio, Texas.
As well as the new date, Iron Maiden also announced that Mongolian folk metal sensations The Hu will be supporting them for all dates in North America.
Speaking about being invited on the tour, throat singer and Morin Khuur player Enkush said, “Iron Maiden are the masters of rock music and one of our biggest inspirations."
"The way that they create and perform their music is majestic. I still remember the first time I heard their ‘ Trooper ’ song and felt the deep energy behind each word. Something about their rhythm hits so close to home. We can’t wait to be on a tour with them for the first time. America, we will see you very soon and be prepared for the mind-blowing shows we will bring to you!”
The Future Past World Tour began in Slovenia in May 2023 . Celebrating songs from both the band's latest album, Senjutsu and 1986's Somewhere In Time, as well as lesser played classics, the first run of dates ended at California's Power Trip festival in October that same year. The band are set to resume touring on September 1 in Perth, Australia, touring the country with metalcore legends Killswitch Engage.

Here's how it works. In 1980, Iron Maiden hit the road supporting Kiss. We were there. It's an old adage I know, and forgive me for dragging it up again, but life on the road isn't all it's cracked up to be. Moments of alcoholic excess, white-line lunacy and stud-farm fever do exist on tour, of course.
In 1980, Maiden's self-titled debut came out, slapped listeners silly and nabbed the band a support slot on Kiss's Unmasked European tour. By this point, Steve had recruited Dave Murray on guitar alongside Dennis Stratton, with Paul Di'Anno on the mic and Clive Burr behind the drums.
