When you’re gaming, a good display is an essential part of the equation. A sub-par display can introduce lots of latency, which slows down your response time. Poor color clarity can also be a problem, especially in games with a lot of monochrome environments. You want a crisp, clean resolution, so you can make out all the details. And a higher frame rate never hurts, since it reduces motion blur.

This is all well and good when you’re in the comfort of your own home. But when you go out on the road, you’ve opened a whole new can of worms. You never know when and where a monitor is going to be available. And even where one is, you don’t know what kind of quality you’re going to get. At the same time, it’s simply not practical to travel with a full-sized monitor. Instead, you need a slim, portable monitor that’s optimized for gaming.

Not long ago, we reviewed the best PS5 portable monitors . Now, we’re going to do the same thing, but with the Xbox Series X/S in mind. At first, you might think that you’d be looking for the same things regardless of your console. And in many senses, that’s true. After all, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are similar consoles, with similar video requirements. On the other hand, both Xbox consoles have their own quirks that set them apart from the PS5. Let’s talk about what makes a good portable monitor, and then look at today’s three options.

G-STORY 4K Portable Monitor for Xbox Series X

G-STORY 12.5″ 4K Portable Monitor for Xbox Series X

G-STORY specializes in all things console-related. We recently reviewed their Xbox Series X Carrying Case , and we loved the design. So it made sense to take a look at their portable Xbox monitor. It’s worth noting that this monitor is designed for the Series X only. If you own a Series S, skip ahead to the next section.

The G-STORY 12.5″ 4K Portable Monitor for Xbox Series X has a unique design. Its matte black shell matches the Series X exactly, and it looks like a seamless part of the console. The monitor panel is attached to a big, broad base that clips into the back of your console. The base has an open design, with a cutout for all of your system’s USB ports.

If you’re using other peripherals like an external SSD, the monitor won’t get in the way. The bottom of the display is hinged, allowing it to fold down over the top of the console. As a result, it’s convenient to store when it’s not in use. Just keep in mind that due to the orientation, your Xbox will have to be laying flat. The monitor will not work with the system in a vertical configuration.

G-STORY 4K Portable Monitor for Xbox Series X

When the display is open, you’ll see a row of buttons at the bottom. The leftmost is a power button, which turns the screen on and off. Another button controls your input source, and the rest can be used to navigate the menu. This enables you to activate HDR mode, which delivers a higher contrast and more vibrance. Or, you can use standard mode for framerates as high as 120 FPS. You can also adjust the FreeSync settings, which can be used to reduce stuttering and motion blur.

G-STORY 4K Portable Monitor for Xbox Series X

The screen itself has a diagonal measurement of 12.5 inches. That’s a bit small, but it’s perfect for sitting on top of the Xbox Series X. It’s also an IPS display, which means you can see non-distorted colors from any angle. The default version is a true 4K display, with four times the pixels of a 1080p screen. That said, you can order a 1080p version for a significant discount. Both versions boast a color gamut of 99% of the sRGB color spectrum. That’s right up there with some of the best gaming monitors, and it’s pretty impressive in a portable display.

G-STORY 4K Portable Monitor for Xbox Series X

This portable monitor sports not one but two HDMI ports. This allows you to connect a second video source, and switch back and forth. Both ports work a little bit differently. HDMI 1 provides the best framerate, at up to 120 FPS. But to get that framerate, you’ll need to drop the resolution to 1080p. You can use this port for 4K, but only at 30 FPS. Alternatively, you can get 4K video at 60 FPS on the HDMI 2 port. This provides a different balance between video resolution and frame rate.

G-STORY 4K Portable Monitor for Xbox Series X

The back of the G-STORY monitor’s base has a pair of 2.5-watt speakers built in. These provide decent quality stereo sound, better than you’d expect for the size. Even so, let’s keep this in perspective. These are 2.5-watt speakers, so they’re not that loud, and they’re a bit tinny. If you really want top-tier audio, use a headset or headphones.

The kit includes a remote control, which is handy if you’re not playing at arms’ length. It comes with a tiny HDMI cable, which connects to the back of your console. And power is supplied by a simple DC adapter, which plugs into your wall outlet. All of this is protected by G-STORY’s 12-month manufacturer’s warranty. If that’s not enough, they also offer a 30-day, no-questions-asked return window. If you decide you don’t like it, just ship it back.

DEPGI 12.5″ 1080P Portable Monitor for Xbox Series S

The DEPGI 12.5″ 1080P IPS Portable Monitor for Xbox Series S is an excellent choice. It clamps onto the back of the console housing, with a hinged design and a collapsible display. It also matches the housing, although in this case that means it’s white, not black.

There are additional vent supports that wrap around the sides of the Xbox, but don’t block the vents. That said, when the screen is collapsed, it will block the top vent. If you hook up to a larger monitor, you’ll need to open this one up or remove it altogether.

There are buttons on the base to control the various functions located directly below the screen. Speaking of, you have a beautifully vibrant 12.5-inch 1080P IPS display, with a 99% sRGB color gamut and an HDR mode. It utilizes AMD’s FreeSync Technology with a 60Hz refresh rate. What this means is no stuttering, tearing or delay, regardless of the type of game you’re playing.

depgi-portable-monitor-for-xbox-series-s

There are no speakers built into this monitor, but there is a 3.5mm aux port. This gives you the flexibility to connect your own external speakers or a pair of wired headphones.

G-STORY 4K Portable Monitor for Xbox Series S

Once you have it attached to your console, you can fold the monitor inward and place it in a backpack. The size it adds to the Series S isn’t very significant. Best of all, it looks sleek and well-made.

Rounding out the kit is a simple wireless remote, DC power cable/plug, a power and HDMI cable to connect the Series S console. You also get Amazon’s excellent 30-day free return window in case you decide it isn’t for you.

INNOCN 4K OLED Portable Monitor

INNOCN 15.6″ 4K OLED Portable Monitor

We’ve reviewed several of INNOCN’s monitor’s before, including the INNOCN 15K1F . So we were eager to get a good look at the new INNOCN 15.6” 4K OLED Portable Monitor . This is a wide, flat monitor with an attractive silver housing and a black border around the screen. It’s ultra-slim, at less than a quarter inch in thickness, and it weighs only two pounds. It’s also well-protected, with a folding case that covers it during transport. When you’re ready to play, flip open the case and use it as a kickstand.

INNOCN 4K OLED Portable Monitor

This is a fairly large portable display, at 15.6 inches. It also offers 4K resolution, meeting the demands of the Xbox Series X. The color gamut of 100% of DCI-P3 is on par with movie industry standards. And with a 100,000:1 contrast ratio, it’s great for even the darkest, grimmest game titles. Best of all, it has less than 1ms of latency, so it’s ideal for online gaming.

INNOCN 4K OLED Portable Monitor

The INNOCN 15.6” display is highly versatile, with both USB Type-C and Mini HDMI connections. When you’re using it with a tablet or laptop, you can take advantage of the touchscreen function. This lets you zoom in and swipe without a mouse. Moreover, the internal battery provides enough charge for four hours. If you need more than that, just plug into a wall outlet using the included USB power cable and wall adapter.

What Makes a Good Portable Monitor?

What features should you be looking for when you choose a portable monitor? A lot depends on your needs, but there are a few things you should always have in mind. Here are those basic features.

Display Size and Resolution

When it comes to display size, bigger is usually better. But with a portable monitor, you’re looking at a trade-off. The larger the display, the less portable it’s going to be. Your typical portable monitor will measure 15.6 inches or less on the diagonal. That’s around the size of a mid-sized laptop screen. You can find some that are as large as 17 inches, but that’s starting to push the envelope for portability. Along the same lines, think about the display’s thickness. A big, fat monitor is going to be tough to carry around.

Resolution is another important concern. Just as with a larger monitor, you’re going to want to see as detailed an image as possible. At a bare minimum, you’ll want at least a 1080p Full HD display. Then again, the Xbox Series X is a 4K system, and even the smaller Series S puts out 2K video. If you want to get the most out of your new console, a 4K monitor is going to be ideal.

Frames Per Second

Second only to resolution, refresh rate is among the most important features gamers look for in a monitor. With the new Xbox consoles pushing 120 frames per second, you’re going to want a monitor that can keep up. At a bare minimum, you’re going to want at least 60. There’s no excuse to be using a 30 FPS display these days. Higher is always better for future-proofing, but anything over 120 won’t help with today’s Xboxes.

Connection Options

Another important consideration is how you’re going to connect the monitor. Both the Xbox Series X and Series S connect via HDMI. To keep things simple, it only makes sense to use an HDMI monitor. That way, you don’t have to mess around with any adapters. That said, some monitors also allow you to connect via USB Type-C. This can make your portable monitor more versatile if you have a USB Type-C smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Power Source

When you’re choosing any portable device, you need to think about how it’s getting its power. Are you plugging into a wall outlet, or do you want a battery-powered monitor? Keep in mind that a good quality gaming monitor is going to draw a lot of juice, so the battery will add some weight. Along the same lines, you’ll need to plug your Xbox console into an outlet. So you’ll already be close enough to electricity that monitor power is not a concern. Then again, a battery-powered monitor can be more versatile if you want to use it for more than console gaming.

Final Verdict

So, which of these monitors is the best choice for you? The G-STORY 12.5″ Portable Monitor for Xbox Series X and DEPGI for Series S are both great choices. They fit directly onto your console, which makes transport easier. You get enough performance to match your system’s capability, in terms of both resolution and FPS. The colors are vibrant, and the Series X version even has its own built-in speakers. There’s a lot to like about both of these displays.

The INNOCN 15.6″ 4K OLED Portable Monitor doesn’t clamp onto your Xbox console. But it does provide professional-grade quality for gamers and content creators alike. Not only that, but the USB Type-C video option makes it more versatile than an HDMI monitor. If you want a portable display that does more than just gaming, this is an excellent choice.

xScreen turns an Xbox Series S into a portable console

The $249.99 xscreen is a unique xbox accessory.

xbox s travel screen

If you’ve ever owned a screen for the PSone or the GameCube, the xScreen will look instantly familiar. The xScreen is an 11.6-inch (1080p) display that attaches to the rear of an Xbox Series S, and it transforms Microsoft’s miniature console into more of an Xbox laptop for on-the-go gaming. It’s a modern take on the tiny 5-inch cramped LCD displays we’ve seen attached to consoles in the past, and it’s a great accessory if you never want to worry about attaching an Xbox to a TV when you’re traveling.

Unfortunately, that portability doesn’t come cheap. The xScreen is $249.99 , nearly the same price as an Xbox Series S, so you’re going to really want to have a portable Xbox to buy into this. I’ve been testing an xScreen over the past few weeks, and I think it’s one of the best executions of the concept of portable console gaming. But it’s far from perfect.

The xScreen is really all about its display. The 11.6-inch panel supports up to 1080p at 60Hz and has surprisingly good viewing angles. If you’re looking to play outside, the panel is rated at 350 nits, and it’s matte, which helps a lot in direct sunlight. The only real limitations to playing outside are simply that you’ll need a cord long enough to power the Xbox Series S.

I played multiple games for hours with the xScreen and never noticed any severe input latency or ghosting issues. It’s a solid panel, except for black levels. If you’re playing titles that have a lot of low-light scenes, the panel sometimes struggles to really nail the black levels, and games can lack some detail as a result.

The xScreen manages to attach to the Xbox Series S through a USB-A port and the HDMI port. You have to lineup the USB first before the unit slots into place and is secured by latches at either side. The attachment feels very secure, and I never experienced any connection issues or worried about it becoming detached.

UPspec Gaming, the makers of xScreen, has done a solid job of matching the size of the xScreen to the Xbox Series S, so it all folds into a neat little package once you’ve finished playing. The white of the xScreen doesn’t quite match the Xbox Series S, but it’s close enough that I only noticed under certain light when I was closely inspecting the xScreen.

The xScreen is an 11.6-inch screen for the Xbox Series S.

Setting the xScreen up does involve some work, though. The Xbox Series S immediately defaults to 720p output for the xScreen, and I had to switch to 1080p in the Xbox settings menu to rectify that. I also enabled the HDMI CEC options so that when I close the display, it turns the Xbox Series S off. This is neat integration, but you will need to use the Xbox power button to boot up the console again.

To avoid any damage to the xScreen or Xbox, I also had to ensure the Xbox Series S had Energy Mode enabled, so it fully powers off instead of sitting in standby. This is important, as the xScreen covers the main vent on the Xbox Series S when it’s folded down, and the Xbox will still output some heat which could damage the display if it’s running in Standby mode. Thankfully, the Xbox Series S boots super fast, so not having standby mode is a minor inconvenience.

The xScreen gets its power from the Xbox Series S USB port, so you don’t have to worry about a separate power supply, and simply connecting the Xbox to a wall works like normal. You’ll need to use Wi-Fi for connectivity, though, as the xScreen blocks off the Ethernet port on the Series S and the additional USB port. That leaves only the USB port at the front open for additional accessories.

Latches keep the xScreen in place.

UPspec Gaming has also enabled an optional cross-hair overlay for use in FPS games, and there are a bunch of built-in controls for screen settings and the volume of the built-in speakers. The speakers get surprisingly loud — but not in a good way. There’s no mute shortcut, and the volume controls don’t seem to affect the volume after a certain level. The speakers are definitely a disappointing aspect of this $249.99 accessory.

If you want to prop the whole thing up, there are optional feet that move the entire unit into a stand-mode orientation. I rarely used the xScreen this way, but it could be useful if you’re limited for space or you want the screen to be higher up in certain environments.

I think the optional carry case is essential for the xScreen, though. When attached to the Xbox and folded down, I noticed that the xScreen will creak and wobble if you apply any pressure to it from above. I’m not sure I’d trust this being knocked around in a backpack without some protection. The hard carry case does a good job of protecting the xScreen, but it’s a $59.99 optional extra.

The xScreen speakers are disappointing.

Speaking of the build quality, I’m also slightly nervous about the hinge on the xScreen. I haven’t pushed it all the way back to test, but it does feel a little flimsy, and I wouldn’t recommend this for small kids that might not handle it delicately enough not to damage it. It’s probably a non-issue for most, but if you plan to use the stand-mode orientation, then this is where the potential for damage seems high.

Despite some of the drawbacks of the xScreen, I’ve had hours of fun with this little display. UPspec Gaming has created something unique here for the Xbox Series S, and it’s in a neat little package that integrates really well. You’re really paying a high $249.99 price tag for that neat integration, particularly when there are so many good portable screens out there that will do just as good a job at half the price.

There’s nothing quite like the xScreen, though. It has made me wish I was a kid again, taking my Xbox everywhere with me and not having to worry about a TV to plug into or a good internet connection for Xbox Cloud Gaming. It’s an old-school idea, in a modern and well-executed package.

You can now make your Xbox Series S portable with the all-new xScreen

xScreen for Xbox Series S

Having your Xbox Series S in your hand luggage for those long-haul flights would surely make the hours fly by for you or someone you love, which is why you need to know about xScreen. xScreen is a fully integrated folding screen that seamlessly attaches to the Xbox Series S, thus transforming your device into a laptop form factor that can be transported and used anywhere there is a power outlet.

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign launched in July last year, Australian based start-up UPspec Gaming has brought the xScreen for Xbox Series S to market, in limited quantities – and if you order one now, you can expect it to ship right away.

xScreen's 11.6-inch IPS screen supports 1080p resolution and 60Hz (which is how most games are optimised for Xbox Series S), integrated stereo speakers, built-in controls for screen settings and volume, a cable-free attachment solution where only your original Xbox power cable is required, optional cross-hair overlay for use in FPS games and an HDMI-CEC Xbox power-off function when you close the screen to prevent overheating.

Optional extras include the ability to swap coloured latches and a "stand-mode" orientation requiring stand feet and a custom carry case for transporting everything you need in the smallest possible package.

xScreen's patent pending attachment system (pictured, above) with integrated power and HDMI connections means that no additional cables (other than the original cable to power the Xbox Series S) are required to create a single cohesive unit.

And when the xScreen is closed, HDMI-CEC shutdown commands are sent to the Xbox Series S to execute shutdown action, thus protecting the Xbox and the xScreen.

The xScreen is available now from UPspec , priced $250 / AU$355 (which is roughly £190, before shipping and import duties) and although we cannot personally vouch for its performance, early reviews posted on UPspec's website are unanimously positive...

The Battle for a Portable Xbox: xScreen vs. Depgi Portable Monitor

Both the UpSpec Gaming xScreen monitor and Depgi's portable display can pair with the Xbox Series S for gaming on the go.

14f2ffe7-e700-4bd0-b570-17442b48db38

If you travel a lot for work or live in a sardine-can of a dorm room or apartment, a clip-on portable monitor can make console gaming a little easier. Both  UpSpec Gaming's xScreen monitor and Depgi's portable gaming monitor attach to the Xbox Series S so you can carry the device and play games when you're not at home. These displays are useful for situations where you can't use a TV or when a standalone monitor is too awkward. As someone used to carrying game consoles when I travel, these attachable monitors are a real game-changer.

 width=

Both screens are expensive, at least relative to the price of the $299 Xbox Series console. But I've seen the $250 xScreen on sale for $200 and Depgi's $300 monitor retails for $300 can be found as low as $260. In both cases, keep an eye out for discounts.

Display and size

The xScreen has an 11.6-inch, 1,920x1,080 screen that can output at 60Hz. UpSpec Gaming states on its website that the screen does not support HDR, since it would draw too much power for this small a design. But that tiny footprint allows the xScreen to sit flush against the Series S when folded down. It connects to the back of the console, sticking out about 1.5 inches (38mm) from the Xbox.

The xScreen

 width=

The xScreen

Depgi's monitor is a bit larger, 12.5 inches, and it's also 1,920x1,080 at 60Hz, but does support HDR. In order to accommodate the larger size, the display has side panels, making the overall footprint about an inch wider (25mm). It's also deeper in the back, extending up 2.3 inches (58mm). Depgi's monitor is larger and more powerful, but you pay for that in portability.

The Depgi screen

 width=

On its own the Series S weighs 4.3 pounds (2.0 kg) and each of the screens add around 1.5 lbs. (0.7 kg).

The xScreen plugs into the HDMI and one of the USB ports on the back of the Xbox. You then screw in the two latches on each side to lock the monitor in place. It does block access to the ethernet port and the other USB port on the back. Luckily, you do still have the front USB port to use and the storage expansion port remains accessible.

The xScreen blocks all but the power and storage expansion ports (top).

 width=

Depgi's monitor also sits at the back of the console but doesn't plug into the USB. You screw it in via an additional panel that mounts along the side, using the included screwdriver. Every port on the back of the Xbox stays accessible, but you'll need to connect to the HDMI port. The Depgi monitor also includes a second HDMI port in case you wanted to plug something else into the device at the same time. It also has two headphone jacks on the back, another feature you probably won't need since most Xbox controllers have a jack.

The Depgi doesn't block any of the ports on the back of the Xbox Series S.

 width=

Even though the xScreen blocks a few of the ports, you probably won't need them that often. Since the Xbox supports Wi-Fi, the ethernet port usually isn't an issue, and the front USB port is typically sufficient. The tool-free xScreen is overall easier to connect to the console. You likely won't be disconnecting and reconnecting either of these screens from the Xbox that often, but regardless, from start to finish, setting up the xScreen is quicker.

Both monitors need to be plugged into the wall for power -- they don't have built-in batteries. But they're still a great deal more portable than carrying around a TV and a little less cumbersome than standalone portable monitors, especially since the Xbox Series S lacks a USB-C port.

The xScreen only needs the Xbox's power cord to power the full unit. Although this is ideal, it's the source of the xScreen's inability to handle HDR. As for Depgi's display, you plug in the console, then plug in a tiny HDMI cable from the console to the monitor, plus another cord that plugs into a USB wall adapter. It's worth noting that the Depgi monitor does include a USB connection for you to use, but you can just plug into one of the Xbox's three USB ports to keep things compact. With all this, you're looking at three cables to power the Depgi monitor.

Since portability is the name of the game, the xScreen wins here. Having to plug in two cables to the wall is a drag, let alone having to remember to bring the USB adapter and schlepping three cables.

 width=

Accessories

UpSpec Gaming also  sells a few accessories  for the xScreen. Most important, it sells a carrying case that fits the screen, the console, the cable and a controller. Using the case does make the package a little bulkier but if you're putting this in a piece of luggage then it shouldn't be an issue. It currently costs around $50.

UpSpec offers an accessory case for the xScreen.

 width=

Depgi doesn't offer any accessories to pair with its monitor. This isn't a big deal, though, since both monitors are fairly sturdy -- it's just a nice-to-have extra for peace of mind. And no, the Depgi monitor will not fit in the xScreen case if you were hoping to mix and match.

The verdict

The xScreen is easily the better monitor for gaming with your Xbox Series S on the go. The only real shortcoming UpSpec has compared to Depgi is the smaller, non-HDR screen. That may be a deal-breaker for you, depending upon your needs, but these are focused on ease of use and portability. The xScreen's smaller size can fit into more types of bags or luggage, it requires fewer cables to get up and gaming faster, and the optional carrying case is a nice bonus. Plus it's significantly cheaper.

Questions and answers of the customers

  • Q I would like to purchase this for my Xbox Series X, but would like to know if it can house and us... answer now Asked by Orm on September 29, 2023 8:47 am Answered by the admin The foam will not fit your Xbox One S. Technically the Xbox One S could still be plugged up to the monitor via the HDMI cord and played with the console sitting on the outside, but the console won't physically fit into the case.

Assuming your are referring to the standard game station, it has 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, 1 audio in, 1 headphone jack , and 1 VGA. Keep in mind these ports exist on the back of the monitor, but are not accessible to you unless you take the lid apart.

  • Q Can I use other speakers besides the ones provided with the product? Is it possible to order this... answer now Asked by Ben B on November 25, 2022 8:54 pm Answered by the admin The product is not customizable when ordering so it will come with all the accessories described. For the standard 1080p version, you would have to remove the plastic frame panel to plug in a different set of speakers. It is doable. The 4K version however has the ability to plug in a different set of speakers without removing the plastic lid frame.

The base foam is glued in (with a lot of glue) so pulling out the foam would not be an easy (or clean) endeavor. Due to the engineering costs involved, we unfortunately would not be able to create a single custom case for you. With that said, we would not recommend modifying this case or any other monitor cases as the failure rate for these kinds of DIY projects is greater than the success rate. If you wanted a PC game station please consider our PC Gaming Station instead. It won't directly fit your ITX, but would allow you to fit PC parts in it.

This case shell can be purchased empty or with DIY foam, but we don't sell this case with just the custom laser cut foam that fits the Xbox.

https://www.caseclub.com/product/case-club-cc920se-case/

The 4k is 60HZ.

  • Q Are the monitors rated for 220V power? answer now Asked by Chris on December 25, 2021 1:32 am Answered by the admin The system is not rated for 220V outlets, and should only be run on 110V outlets.

Not yet, but we will be launching a 4K monitor version within the next few months.

xScreen Turns Xbox Series S into a Laptop-Like Portable, and Was Crowdfunded in 20 Minutes

The kickstarter was fully funded in just 20 minutes..

Taylor Lyles Avatar

Compared to the Xbox Series X and PS5 , the Series S is arguably a much lighter console to carry. While it's no Nintendo Switch, if you have been looking for a way to play next-gen games on the go , and play endless titles on Game Pass, this new portable monitor is designed to do just that. Clearly, it's a popular idea, meeting its Kickstarter funding goal in just 20 minutes.

xScreen by UPspec Gaming is an attachable monitor that turns the Xbox Series S into a laptop-like design, and allows you to play your Xbox Series S games when you can't connect your console to a TV or monitor. It features an 11.6-inch 1080p IPS screen with a refresh rate of 60Hz., and also includes in-built speakers. The screen plugs directly into both the HDMI and USB ports on the back of the Series S.

The xScreen also includes a pass-through so the device won't get in the way when you need to plug in the power cable or a storage expansion card into your Series S. UPspec also makes clear that the screen doesn't require its own power source, nor does it require your Series S to be modified in any way. The final model will be designed to match the colour and finish of the Series S case.

Additionally because it has a laptop-like form factor, the design allows you to fold the screen onto the console for easy portability. According to UPspec, when the xScreen is connected to the Series S it can fit inside a 15-inch laptop bag.

The Kickstarter for the device launched at 10am ET this morning, and it was fully funded just 20 minutes after the project went live on the crowdfunding website. While it has reached its funding goal already, if you are interested in backing the project, you can still do so as the project is slated to close on August 6.

Pledging $249 AU (approximately $187 USD / $135) to the project guarantees you will receive one xScreen display for your Xbox Series S. Keep in mind that the Kickstarter page mentions that an estimated delivery for the xSccreen is for January 2022.

Best Xbox Series S Monitors

The Xbox Series S is a less expensive, lower-end version of the Xbox Series X. One difference is that it has less processing power and renders most games up to 1440p instead of up to 4k like on the Series X. Because of this, the type of monitor best suited for gaming with the Series S is different from the one best suited for the Series X. It's more cost-effective to get a 1440p monitor to match the console's capabilities.

Even though the monitors we list below are 1440p monitors, they all can connect to the Xbox Series S at 4k and downscale a 4k image. If HDR is important to you, you'll need to set the resolution on your Series S to 4k, even if you're using a 1440p monitor, as Xbox Series S only supports HDR over a 4k connection. However, some of these monitors can't downscale a 4k image @ 120Hz and are limited to 60Hz at that resolution. We note which monitors this applies to in the selections below.

When looking for a monitor, it's important to consider your budget and the monitor's gaming performance. Something with a fast response time results in crisp motion, and you'll also want something with low input lag for a responsive feel, but most monitors have low input lag. The Series S also supports variable refresh rate (VRR) technology to reduce screen tearing, so it's important to get a monitor that works with the console's VRR format, but that's the case with most monitors anyway.

We've bought and tested more than 300 monitors, and below you'll find our recommendations for the best monitors for Xbox Series S. See our recommendations for the best monitors for Xbox Series X , the best 1440p gaming monitors , and the best 27-inch gaming monitors .

Best Monitor For Xbox Series S

LG 27GR95QE-B Design Picture

The best monitor for Xbox Series S we've tested is the LG 27GR95QE-B. It's a high-end gaming monitor with excellent picture quality and fantastic gaming performance. It has superb compatibility with the Xbox Series S and can downscale a 4k @ 120Hz signal to its 1440p display because it has HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. While this monitor is designed for PC gaming due to its 240Hz refresh rate, it still has a fast response time with 120Hz and 60Hz signals, but there's some overshoot at lower refresh rates that results in inverse ghosting. You can also consider the Corsair XENEON 27QHD240 if you want something with less overshoot at 60Hz, but it has higher input lag instead.

Another advantage of the LG is that it displays perfect blacks in dark rooms. This means it's ideal for dark room gaming, and there isn't any blooming around bright objects. Its HDR performance is also amazing, so highlights in games pop and colors look vibrant. However, like many OLEDS, only some parts of the screen can get bright at the same time. If you're gaming in a bright environment with this monitor, you may have trouble with glare, so it's best to use it in a darker environment.

Best Mid-Range Monitor For Xbox Series S

LG 27GR83Q-B Design Picture

If you prefer saving money with a mid-range monitor, consider the LG 27GR83Q-B. The main downside of getting this monitor for a lower cost is that it has worse picture quality than the LG 27GR95QE-B , especially in dark rooms, due to its low contrast ratio. However, besides the differences in picture quality, it has many similar features, as it has a higher 240Hz refresh rate. While this isn't relevant for console gaming, you can at least take advantage of it if you want to connect your gaming PC.

It supports HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, so it's capable of downscaling a 4k @ 120Hz signal, enabling you to experience HDR at 120Hz with the Series S. This is also useful if you ever plan to upgrade to the Series X, as it can downscale the more detailed image the Series X is capable of providing. It has excellent motion handling with both 120Hz and 60Hz signals, and there's less overshoot than on the 27GR95QE-B. Its VRR support also works well with the Xbox to reduce screen tearing.

Best Lower Mid-Range Monitor For Xbox Series S

LG 27GP850-B/27GP83B-B Design Picture

If you don't need anything fancy and want to save money, check out the LG 27GP850-B, which is also available as the 27GP83B-B at different retailers, and both offer the same excellent gaming performance for the Series S. It has a lower refresh rate than the LG 27GR83Q-B , but considering the console can't take advantage of either monitor's max refresh rate, this doesn't make a difference. It doesn't have HDMI 2.1 bandwidth either, so it can't display HDR at 120Hz. However, it works well with the console, with HDR working at 60Hz and 1440p working up to 120Hz without HDR. It also has VRR support to reduce screen tearing, and motion looks smooth thanks to its fast response time at 120Hz and 60Hz.

The 27GP850-B variant has a backlight strobing feature to further improve the appearance of motion by reducing persistence blur, but it only works with 120Hz signals and not 60Hz. While the 27-inch screen size is good to use with a 1440p resolution as it has good pixel density and image sharpness, if you want a bigger monitor, consider the LG 32GP850-B . However, it costs more for a minimal difference in performance.

Best Budget Monitor For Xbox Series S

Dell G2724D Design Picture

If you're looking for a budget-friendly monitor for your Xbox Series S, check out the Dell G2724D. It has fantastic compatibility with the Xbox Series S. However, it's not capable of displaying 4k @ 120Hz signals because it doesn't have HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, so it can't display HDR at 120Hz with the Series S. It performs similarly to the LG 27GP850-B , though it lacks some of that monitor's extra features. Most importantly, the Dell doesn't have an audio output, so if you want to connect speakers to your console, you'll need to use an HDMI audio extractor. However, you can still use the headphone output on the Xbox controller to connect standard headphones if you're not using speakers.

However, it's still a great choice for the Xbox Series S. Fast-moving objects look sharp thanks to its fast response time, and it has very low input lag for a responsive feel. It also gets bright enough to easily overcome glare if you're gaming in a brighter environment. However, because of its fair contrast, deep blacks look gray if you're in a darker room. Additionally, it has considerably worse HDR performance than the LG, so highlights in games won't pop as much, and HDR colors look less vivid.

Best Cheap Monitor For Xbox Series S

Gigabyte GS27QC Design Picture

If you want something cheap and reliable for gaming, look into the Gigabyte GS27QC. It has much worse picture quality than the Dell G2724D , but that's expected for most cheap displays. It also has worse motion handling, particularly at 60Hz, but its response time at 120Hz is still good enough for gaming. It works well with the console as you can play 1080p or 1440p games up to 120Hz. However, it can't downscale a 4k @ 120Hz image, so it can't display HDR at 120Hz with the Series S. Its VRR support also works with the console.

It features a curved screen with narrow viewing angles and terrible ergonomics, which means it's a bad choice for co-op gaming as the image appears washed out from the sides. That said, it has a high native contrast ratio, so while its picture quality isn't as good as the Dell, it still displays deep blacks in dark rooms. However, it doesn't get bright enough to fight glare if you want to use it in a bright room.

  • ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM: The ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM is similar to the LG 27GR95QE-B as it uses the same OLED panel and even gets brighter. It's better if you want better picture quality, but it doesn't support HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. See our review
  • Dell Alienware AW2724DM: The Dell Alienware AW2724DM is comparable to the LG 27GP850-B/27GP83B-B as it has many of the same specs but worse motion handling at 120Hz and 60Hz. It doesn't have built-in speakers or an audio output either. See our review
  • Gigabyte M27Q P: The Gigabyte M27Q P is an alternative to the Dell G2724D if you can't find the Dell easily available. While its motion handling isn't as good as the Dell, it's still good enough for most gamers. See our review

Feb 20, 2024: Replaced the AOC Q27G3XMN with the Dell G2724D as 'Best Budget' as the AOC is harder to find now. Removed the Gigabyte M27U as a Notable Mention, as it's harder to find now.

Dec 19, 2023: Replaced the Dell Alienware AW2723DF, Gigabyte M27Q P, and the Acer Nitro XF243Y Pbmiiprx with the LG 27GR83Q-B, AOC Q27G3XMN, and the Gigabyte GS27QC because they're all better for their price categories and easier to find; moved the Gigabyte M27Q P to Notable Mentions.

Oct 20, 2023: Moved the Gigabyte M27U to Notable Mentions because it doesn't fit into the scope of the article and added the Dell Alienware AW2724DM to Notable Mentions.

Aug 21, 2023: Added the Gigabyte M27U to give a 4k option in the mid-range price category; added the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM to Notable Mentions.

Jun 23, 2023: Verified that the monitors are still available to purchase and updated text for clarity throughout; added the Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 S32BG75 and Gigabyte M27U to Notable Mentions.

Our recommendations are based on what we think are the best monitors for gaming with the Xbox Series S. They are adapted to be valid for most people in each price range. Rating is based on our review, factoring in price and feedback from our visitors.

If you would prefer to make your own decision, here is the list of all of our monitor reviews. Be careful not to get too caught up in the details. Most monitors are good enough to please most people, and the things we fault monitors on are often not noticeable unless you really look for them.

Palworld releases patch 0.1.50 and it's a big one, but do Xbox saves have a bigger problem?

P alworld devs continue to pour their heart and soul into the surprise massive hit and today reach the milestone of a 0.1.5 release.

Posting on X   they unveiled a large set of patch notes fixing a ton of issues, but also, right at the very bottom said they were looking into a potentially serious Xbox-only issue that some people have been experiencing saying, "We are currently working on an issue where auto-save fails on the Xbox and Xbox Game Pass versions. We expect that this will be resolved in an upcoming update."

As ever the Steam version has been released but the Xbox version 1 will follow "as soon as it is ready", leading to more minor frustration for those who may be playing the game for free on Game Pass.

One of the biggest highlights is perhaps a small Quality of Life fix. The Work button can now be toggled to allow continuous work rather than repeat tapping. Our F key thanks you Palworld.

‘Dune: Part Two’: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Before you see the second film in Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the sci-fi epic, try this refresher on spice, the Imperium and the Kwisatz Haderach.

  • Share full article

A hooded, intense looking Timothée Chalamet in close-up.

By Danielle Dowling

Since the weird, wild universe of “Dune” emerged from the pages of Frank Herbert’s novel in 1965, filmmakers have yearned to bring it to the screen. In the 1970s, Alejandro Jodorowsky was thwarted in his attempt to turn his elaborate vision into cinematic reality. In 1984, David Lynch was forced to cram volumes of lore into two hours, and the result was an ugly-beautiful disaster . In the latest foray, Denis Villeneuve has created an engrossing, believable world , smartly dividing the first book in the series into two parts. “Dune: Part One” was a critical and box office hit when it was released in 2021, and now “Part Two,” which opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, is poised to pick up where the last film left off. Here’s a primer to bring you up to speed.

Where are we?

“Dune” is set about 20,000 years in the future, and much of the series takes place on the desert planet of Arrakis. Part of the galactic empire of the Imperium, which is ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam, Arrakis is vital because it offers a necessary resource — spice — that exists nowhere else. In “Part One,” the emperor transferred control of Arrakis from the brutes of House Harkonnen to their longtime foes, House Atreides. But the gift was a trap, something Duke Leto Atreides suspected but hoped to turn to his advantage by establishing an alliance with the Fremen, a native people of Arrakis who live mostly in its hidden corners. Before Leto’s plans could bear fruit, the emperor secretly sent his elite force to aid Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) in regaining control of the planet and in destroying Leto’s troops and family. (In the process, Leto died.)

Why is spice so important?

“Part Two” opens with the words “Power over spice is power over all.” After a religious revolt against robots millenniums before the start of the series, the use of intelligent machines was banned. People have since relied on preternatural abilities that are developed through training and the use of psychotropic drugs such as spice, which can expand consciousness and extend life. The resource is particularly crucial to the navigators, who enable interstellar travel.

What’s the deal with Paul Atreides?

Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is the son of Leto and his concubine, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), who is a member of the Bene Gesserit, a mystical sisterhood that surreptitiously manipulates the levers of power. It has been seeding self-serving myths and conducting a breeding program for generations. The relationship between Leto and Jessica had been arranged in hopes that she would give birth to a daughter who could then conceive the Kwisatz Haderach — a male Bene Gesserit with “a mind powerful enough to bridge all space and time.” Instead, Jessica bore Leto the son he desired. (A Bene Gesserit can control everything that goes on in her body.)

Though Reverend Mother Mohiam (Charlotte Rampling), Jessica’s Bene Gesserit mentor, suspected that Paul was in fact the Kwisatz Haderach, she was also aware of the Harkonnens’ plot to murder him. During the attack on the Atreides, the Harkonnen forces chased Paul and Jessica into a treacherous sand storm and assumed that it killed them. But they survived and crossed paths with a Fremen group that is led by Stilgar (Javier Bardem), an ally of Leto, and that includes Chani (Zendaya), a young woman who had been appearing in Paul’s dreams.

What happens now?

In “Part Two,” we will finally meet Emperor Shaddam (Christopher Walken); his daughter, Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh); and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Austin Butler), nephew and heir of Baron Harkonnen. We will also see Paul and Chani’s love blossom as he assimilates into the Fremen way of life — taking the name Muad’Dib, learning to summon and ride giant sandworms — and then rises up to lead the Fremen rebellion.

What remains to be seen is how Villeneuve will handle the contradiction at the heart of “Dune”: Despite its resemblance to a hero’s journey, Herbert intended it to be a cautionary tale against placing all hope and power in a savior. He clarified this point in the subsequent five books he wrote for the series, starting with the first sequel, “Dune Messiah.”

Will Villeneuve make ‘Part Three’?

The director recently said he was working on a screenplay of “Dune Messiah,” which would be the third and final film in the series. The plot takes place 12 years after the events in the first book, and he has said he would like to wait a couple of years to allow Chalamet to age into the role. But Warner Bros. has yet to officially approve that project.

Star wars game cancelled as ea makes major layoffs.

EA has canceled a Mandalorian-led FPS title that was in development at Respawn Entertainment amidst a company restructuring and layoffs.

  • EA cancels its new Star Wars FPS; focusing on larger scale and established IPs like Star Wars: Jedi franchise.
  • Approximately 670 individuals are losing their jobs at EA in the latest in a shocking wave of layoffs hitting the gaming industry.
  • Fans disappointed as Respawn's Mandalorian shooter canceled, signaling shift away from linear FPS in Star Wars universe.

EA has canceled a new Star Wars first-person shooter title that was in development at Respawn Entertainment. While job listings for the title appeared back in 2022, recent reports gave players some insight into the game's story and gameplay, with it being focused on a brand-new Mandalorian character and featuring a more linear level design, contrasting Respawn's open-world Star Wars: Jedi games.

As reported by IGN , EA has announced a major company restructuring that will, unfortunately, see approximately 670 individuals, or 5% of its workforce, losing their jobs and the cancelations of titles such as Respawn's Star Wars shooter that no longer seem to fit in with the studio's plans going forward. This is the latest in a shocking wave of layoffs to hit the gaming industry, with major studios at PlayStation and Microsoft recently undergoing similar shake-ups as well.

10 Best First-Person Shooters Set In The Star Wars Universe

Ea is reportedly focusing on larger scale games, several disney and marvel projects are still in the works.

As part of EA's reorganization, Respawn's linear Mandalorian shooter was canceled, with the company reportedly planning a shift toward massive communities, live service games, and large open-world games , with reports of the Star Wars: Jedi franchise continuing. According to IGN 's report, not all of the team that was working on Respawn's shooter are being let go, with many being reassigned to the third Star Wars: Jedi title , the upcoming Marvel games, Iron Man and Black Panther , and Apex Legends .

The news of EA's plans going forward also suggests that the studio is focusing largely on established ideas and IPs, which doesn't bode well for the idea of original characters' stories being the focus of future Star Wars titles. While Cal Kestis is now an established, extremely popular character , it's hard to say whether EA would take a risk on telling his story with a game like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order following this new restructuring, as the idea of a brand-new Force-sensitive who was not an established character like Luke Skywalker, for example, would be seen as a financial risk.

While there wasn't much information surrounding the title, news of the Mandalorian shooter's cancelation is sure to disappoint fans. Ever since Boba Fett's debut in the original Star Wars trilogy, the Mandalorians have been fan-favorite characters, and recent shows such as The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars have only increased their popularity. For fans of a certain era of Star Wars gaming, the news that there won't be a return to more linear first-person shooters in the franchise is also disappointing, as titles such as Star Wars: Dark Forces were extremely well received at their time, with many still hoping Kyle Katarn's story would be reintegrated into Disney's new Star Wars canon at some point, and these titles were directly cited as inspiration for Respawn's FPS in recent job listings .
