5 of the uk’s best safari lodges.

If you had your hopes pinned on a safari this year you needn’t miss out – as you can still get up close to elephants, cheetahs and lions in wildlife lodges across the UK

1. West Midland Safari Park

Cheetahs at West Midland Safari Park (West Midland Safari Park)

Cheetahs at West Midland Safari Park (West Midland Safari Park)

Tanzania might not be an option this year but you can still drive 6.5km through West Midland Safari Park near Birmingham, which is home to zebras, Congo buffalo, Indian rhino and critically endangered Bactrian camels.

To see some of the animals at night – after most visitors have left for the day – you can now stay over in one of the park’s eight new safari lodges.

As well as the lodges, the animals’ habitats have also been renovated, so the park’s three African elephants now have access to an outdoor paddock and drinking pool 24 hours a day. Six of the lodges have large windows and an outdoor deck overlooking the pool, so you can observe Latabe, Five and Sutton as they drink. The two-storey lodges blend in with the paddock as they feature thatched roofs, wooden floors, woven rugs and straw lampshades. The two other lodges overlook the cheetahs’ lair, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedrooms providing a perfect view of cheetahs Azrael and Bappe. A Red Panda Cottage is also due to open in spring 2021.

For more information visit West Midland Safari Park .

2. Longleat

A white rhino (Shutterstock)

A white rhino (Shutterstock)

Once the grounds of a 16th century manor house, Longleat opened as a safari park in 1966. Sandwiched between Bath and Salisbury, the reserve is four times the size of London’s Richmond Park, and home to game more at home on the plains of Zimbabwe.

Visitors can drive in their own vehicle or hop on a safari bus to see tigers, white rhinos and lions. Alternatively, you can join a walking safari to see lemurs, African tortoises and the black-headed Somali sheep.

For a close up of the zebras and giraffes, however, book a night in a cottage. There are three to choose from: East Lodge, which includes a guided tour of the grounds, and Keeper’s House and Keeper’s Cottage, both of which include a guided safari tour in a 4x4.

For more information visit Longleat .

3. Port Lympne Safari Park

Friendly giraffes (Shutterstock)

Swap Kenya for Kent on a safari at Port Lympne Safari Park on the edge of the Kent Downs. Covid rules permitting, you can choose one of three ranger-led safaris, during which you will see black rhino, wildebeest, ostriches and critically endangered Rothschild giraffes.

For a more intimate experience, stay overnight and see the animals once most guests have gone home. The 243-hectare estate is home to wigwams, shepherds’ huts, a treehouse hotel and an igloo-style ‘bubble’ designed for stargazers. Depending on the accommodation you choose, you might be able to observe Amur leopards from Leopard Creek or watch TV side by side with Adras, Oudrika and their offspring on the other side of an enormous window in Lion Lodge.

For more information visit Port Lympne Safari Park .

4. Camp Baboon

Okapi (Shutterstock)

Set within the Wild Place Project, this camp on the outskirts of Bristol is home to lemurs, pygmy goats, eland and okapi, which is endemic to the Congo.

The site has 10 wishbone-shaped cabins for overnight guests, who can help feed some of the animals on a morning tour before the site opens to the public. You can also join an evening tour and rangers’ workshops to learn bush craft skills under a canopy in the woods and around a firepit. As well as entry to Wild Place Project, overnight guests can visit Bristol Zoo Gardens for free, too.

For more information visit Camp Baboon .

5. ZSL London Zoo

An Asiatic lion (Shutterstock)

There are only 520 Asiatic lions left in Gir National Park in Gujarati in the north west of India. While you may not be able to travel there at the moment, you can see a pride of the endangered animals in Land of the Lions, a breeding centre inside ZSL London Zoo.

The London enclosure is modelled after the national park, complete with railway tracks, a corrugated roof, train station ticket hall and a crumbling temple. Visitors stroll on raised boardwalks over the lions to a viewing area. You can also spend the night in one of nine cabins in Gir Lion Lodge. A stay includes three tours that take place once the zoo is closed to the public.

For more information visit ZSL London Zoo .

Safari Lodges

You won’t just find safari lodges in Africa – the concept and the type of structure can really work anywhere - even the green Great British countryside!  Take a look at what’s on offer and open up a world of possibilities.

What a safari lodge offers, wherever its location, is a unique glamping experience – essentially you’re in a large tent (some of them are huge, some more intimate) but more often than not you also have access to comfortable beds, modern washroom facilities and the kind of little luxuries that could put a boutique hotel to shame.

Giraffe Lodge – The UK’s Only Overnight Safari Lodge

The 100 acres “Africa Experience” safari park in Kent, England, is a place where many African species are free to roam as if they were at home… except they don’t have to worry about fighting for meager water holes here.

When you arrive, you will get a glass of champagne and meet your enthusiastic guide. You are then taken on a safari experience to rival that of Africa, as all the animals are easily locatable in the vicinity of the lodge.

You then stop at your luxury tented camp, complete with a bar and restaurant. There is an elevated platform, so you can enjoy looking at the animals as you relax.

The open kitchen cooks a five-course African banquet for you and the other explorers, and the day is finished with story-telling and information about the important conservation work owners, The Aspinall Foundation, do in Africa.

The following day features another round of safari adventuring before returning you back to England, where you collect your bags.

Giraffe Lodge was formerly called Livingstone Lodge, and it's in the Port Lympne Wild Animal Park on the eastern bank of the United Kingdom.

The country’s accommodation offering has come a long way since the days when a cabin stay meant roughing it in a spidery bothy or barn, or pretending someone’s garden shed was akin to a Wild West pioneer pad. Now our cabins are just as stylish as those in Scandinavia or the US, and come in a huge range of varieties and styles, with high-tech touches, luxurious interiors and indulgences such as outdoor showers, wood burners and wood-fired hot tubs. Whether you want to hide away in a remote spot in a forest, stay above a beach in Cornwall or hole up in a rural hinterland in your wooden abode, you’ll find some great options here.

Absolutely! And this is what we encourage. We believe that each season enhances our time in nature. Spring brings with it a fresh new beginning. Everything in the world has started to wake and pops of pastel palettes start to make an appearance. Summer allows for your time in nature to be extended. You’ll find yourself outside from dawn till dusk, exploring all the beauty that surrounds you. Autumn offers a mosaic of colour that is truly mesmerising and there are plenty of foraging opportunities to be enjoyed. Wondrous winter. There’s no better feeling than a cool winter walk, followed by a glass of red while you cosy up by the fire with a good book.

Can I purchase a Unique hideaways gift voucher?

What time do we check in?

Check in starts at 1:30pm at Guest Services for a 1.45pm departure. If you would like to explore the reserve before your safari we can look after your luggage.

What time does the safari start?

Your safari starts at 1.45pm and takes around 1 – 1 ½ hours. We advise that you take a bathroom break before boarding the safari truck as there are no stops until you reach Giraffe Lodge. We also advise that you take a coat/extra layer on safari.

How do we redeem our free admission to Howletts?

As part of your stay you get free admission to our sister park, Howletts Wild Animal Park, approximately half an hour away near Canterbury. When arriving at the Howletts Gatehouse, please provide your reservation name from Port Lympne or show your booking confirmation for free admission.

Are the tents heated?

Although there is a heater in your tent it can get cold during adverse weather and the early spring/autumn months.  We would advise that you pack appropriate clothing for the current weather conditions.

Are there any kettles/hair dryers for the tents?

Tea and coffee making facilities are available in your tent, however, we do not advise that hairdryers are used due to the limited supply of electricity to the tents.

Can we bring our own alcohol to the lodge?

Guests are not permitted to bring their own alcohol, however, there is a bar in the restaurant where you may purchase drinks to accompany your meal.

Are there toilets in the restaurant?

Unfortunately, there are no toilets in the restaurant. You can either use the en suite in your tent or the main shower block a short walk away at the top of the slope.

Can we have candles in the tent?

We do not allow candles or any naked flames in or around the tents for Health & Safety reasons. Lamps are provided in your tent.

Where can we smoke?

There are two designated smoking areas. One by the shower block at the top of the slope and the other is located behind the Lapa restaurant. There is a strict no smoking policy in or around the tents.

Staycations are on the rise in the UK, but many domestic travellers are looking for something different to the usual city breaks, seaside resort visits or countryside B&B stays.

One option is a ‘glamping’ holiday. Data from Canopy and Stars shows that bookings for these upmarket rural breaks have steadily increased since the pandemic, with the number of forward bookings having “doubled when compared with the same time in 2019”.

Log cabins offer an even more glamorous form of glamping, where guests can enjoy all the usual views and seclusion but with added luxuries such as lounge space, proper beds, hot tubs or fire pits.

With summer on the horizon, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore some of the UK’s most remote areas while having all the amenities of home.

From lakeside cabins to Lake District huts, we’ve compiled a list of some the best log cabins in the UK.

Ditchling Cabin, Sussex

Ditchling Cabin sits on its own private lake in the Sussex Downs

Less than half an hour from Brighton lies Ditchling Cabin, a large and secluded cabin with its own private lake in the South Downs National Park . Named after the nearby village (just four minutes away by car), the cabin has two bedrooms and a large living room alongside its kitchen and dining room. Outside, guests can make use of a large deck, fire pit and hot tub as well as boats, canoes and paddle boards (and wet suits if it’s a bit chilly).

Nearby activities include horse riding, hiking, fishing and golf, while nearby Clayton and Hassocks contain shops, pubs and restaurants if you want to briefly return to civilisation. If you’d prefer to stay in a cabin but have access to an indoor pool and a tennis court, the newly launched Tennis Shed might be a better fit.

How to stay

Open all year round, Ditchling Cabin sleeps four people, with prices starting at £345 per night. ditchlingcabin.com

Settle, Norfolk

One of the cabins at Settle

Tucked away in a 30-acre site in southern Norfolk, Settle is a collection of cabins, safari tents and old railway goods carriages that have been upgraded into “luxurious lakeside havens”. The cabin steals the show: it’s an idyllic waterside retreat with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors looking out onto the lawn and woodland. Open-plan, timber interiors give the cabin a natural look that befits the rural setting, with plenty of space for relaxing inside or outside.

The tranquil surroundings are a big draw for most visitors, with several nearby forests and walking trails to explore, as well as the coastal towns of Holkham , Southwold and Waxham within an easy distance.

Prices for the cabin start at £1,080 for three nights (there’s a minimum of a three-night stay), while the carriages start at £430 for a minimum of two nights. Both sleep two people. settlenorfolk.co.uk

Ekopod, Cornwall

The Kemper Safari Tent at night

Perched on the edge of Bodmin Moor, Ekopod’s site provides several glamping pods and ‘Geodomes’ for a unique stay in this secluded woodland location. Its ‘safari tents’ – named Ebron and Kemper – are even more special, with space to sleep eight people across two bedrooms. Their large, covered balconies are perfect for a spot of outdoor relaxation, while dogs are also permitted at a rate of £25 per stay.

The site’s peaceful location is designed to be as ‘wildlife-friendly’ as possible and is found just between Launceston and Boscastle , with opportunities for exploration, dining out and various tourist activities. The coastline is close by, with pristine beaches such as Bossiney Cove and Trebarwith Strand around 20 minutes away by car. There are various hiking and walking routes too, with dozens of destinations for day trips if you’re staying for longer.

All accommodations have a minimum stay length of two nights. The tents are open from April to October, and a stay for two adults comes in at £150 per night (though they can accommodate up to eight people); Geodomes are £130. ekopod.co.uk

Aurora, North Antrim, Northern Ireland

The Salix cabin at Aurora

Aurora’s two cabins have a privileged location near North Antrim’s Atlantic coast, just one mile from Giant’s Causeway (the famous geological formation that is consistently one of Northern Ireland’s most visited tourist attractions). The two Canadian Cedar cabins – named Ulex and Salix – are billed as “the first of their kind anywhere in Ireland”, offering a blend of modern luxury and natural beauty. Salix is the slightly more impressive of the two, with 1,100 square feet of open-plan living space including two bedrooms, a veranda and a private hot tub.

Once done with the Causeway, visitors can also spend time in nearby towns like Bushmills or seaside resorts including Portrush and Portstewart .

Both cabins can host four people. Bookings must be for a minimum of two nights, with prices starting at £590. auroranorthcoast.com

Venachar Cabins, Stirling, Scotland

The ‘Rowan’ cabin at Loch Venachar

With three cabins on the shores of Loch Venachar in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, Venachar Cabins is a “cycling, walking, fishing, canoeing and nature watching haven”. Just one hour from Edinburgh, the National Park itself is an adventurer’s paradise, but the cabins offer a welcome retreat at the end of a long day’s exploring.

All the cabins can accommodate several people – an eight-person cabin is currently under construction – and are dog friendly, with fully equipped kitchens and log burners (the Birch Cabin also has a wood-fired hot tub that’s available to use for an extra fee). All of them have scenic views over the loch.

All cabins sleep four people and have a minimum stay of two nights, with the cheapest starting at £165 per night. lochvenacharcabins.co.uk

Helvellyn Hut, Cumbria

Low Nest Farms offer several forms of accommodation in the Lake District, but the Helvellyn Hut steals the show

Low Nest Studios offers several different types of accommodation on its site in the northern part of the Lake District . While all of them boast attractive features, Helvellyn Hut stands out.

This bespoke cabin is made from British timber, with a floor-to-ceiling bi-fold opening door that gives guests spectacular views over the Helvellyn range, whether from the sofa or the bed. Outside there’s an elevated deck, with a covered dining area and a Japanese deep soak tub for what must be some of the best bath views in the country.

The hut sleeps two people and is open all year round. Prices start from £135 per night. helvellynhut.co.uk

One Cat Farm, Ceredigion, Wales

One of several available cabins at One Cat Farm

Since launching 10 years ago, this site – built on an old pig farm – has focused on restoring the land into a nature reserve, planting over 400 trees to add to its wildlife areas and two ponds (one of which guests can swim in).

The site is comprised of four cabins, each with a covered outdoor kitchen and dining space that is connected to the bedroom and living spaces. Large picture windows means that guests are always surrounded by and connected to nature during their stay.

The harbour town of Aberaeron is close by, as are several valleys, waterfalls, caves and beaches such as Penbryn and Aberporth.

The site is open all year, with all cabins sleeping two adults and up to two children (although two of the cabins can take three kids), and prices for the cabins begin at £115 per night; all require a minimum two-night stay. onecatfarm.com

Hesleyside Huts, Northumberland

The exterior of Raven at night

Part of a 4,000-acre estate in Northumberland, the Hesleyside site contains seven different accommodation choices. The two cabins and three shepherd huts are charming options, while the treehouse is an exceptional ornate wooden structure complete with treetop walkways. However, the most impressive option is Raven, a watchtower-type, two-floored building that was inspired by Northumberland’s castles. With its king size bed, large wooden bath, private surveying deck and retractable star gazing roof, this is real glamping luxury at its finest.

Nearby attractions include Hadrian’s Wall and Kielder Water, as well as sections of the Northumberland coast including Bamburgh .

Raven sleeps two adults, though other options can accommodate four. There’s a minimum of two nights for a weekday stay, while this is extended to three nights at weekends. Prices start at £260 per night. hesleysidehuts.co.uk

SLEEP A WHISKER AWAY FROM SUMATRAN TIGERS

safari cabins uk

Enjoy an overnight experience, unlike anywhere else in the UK

Four brand-new, luxurious lodges offer an amazing overnight stay amongst our incredible Sumatran tigers. Two types of lodges will be available: with a hot tub and without a hot tub.

Lodges with a hot tub are detached, single-storey spaces, sleeping up to five people. These lodges feature an open-plan living and dining area and two bedrooms, all with floor-to-ceiling windows looking into the Sumatran tiger habitat. Outside you’ll find a covered garden area, with a sunken hot tub right next to a large, glass window offering a chance to get up close to this endangered species.

Lodges without a hot tub are double-storey and can sleep up to six people. Downstairs is a master bedroom and in the living area is an authentically themed day bed, which can be used as a space to relax and take in the views. Stairs lead to an upstairs bedroom, with three single beds and an additional bathroom.

The Wildlife

Watch the stunning Sumatran tigers right outside your window. These incredible felines are the smallest variety of tiger. Their stripes are as unique as a human’s fingerprints, with each individual having its own stripe pattern.

Unlike most of their cousins, tigers love swimming and will frequently cool off by having a dip in their pools!

Nakal is our 8-year-old male who has been at the Park since 2016 after moving from London Zoo. Our female, 10-year-old Dourga has been at the Park since July 2022 after travelling from Fota Wildlife Park in Ireland.

See if you can tell the pair apart from your window – Dourga has thinner stripes and has 2 circles at the top of her back right leg. Nakal has thicker whiskers, thicker black stripes and oval shaped stripe pattern along his sides!
