Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Windows, Waterfront, Cityscape

Text description provided by the architects. The Confluence is an emblematic urban hub that will become historic, representative as it is of the 2000s and 2010s. The word ‘confluence’ suggests meeting, convergence. In this part of Lyon , there’s the meeting of many different individuals and social actors and the convergence of a great number of styles. It’s been a pleasure to be involved in such a cultural hotbed and the whole process of liberating renewal, where every project needs to find its place. Ycone will be bordered by pre-existing buildings in an urban development that will be part of a world to come. So it was important to see what could happen: we’re not making sense for today, but for a programmed future – with all the risks that that implies: in urbanism, things that are programmed can vanish without a trace from one day to the next.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Waterfront, Cityscape

Ycone is a program with a lot of mixed-use space. We’re providing apartments, but those apartments are not automatically destined for the same people, people from the same social category or with the same aspirations. Ycone will also accommodate retail outlets. The project will be faced with office blocks and sit alongside a railway. Its scale is slightly bigger than average, too. But Ycone isn’t aiming to be a city ‘monument’: this building will be part of the life of the new precinct and needs to have its own identity.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Image 17 of 42

Ycone is surrounded by three projects and its place is predetermined. I tried to turn the building around a bit, to push it to one side, then push it to the other side, to work out how I could set off a positive conversation with the neighbouring buildings. But that discussion was based on two conditions: urbanity and amenity. by creating a sort of green filter that will allow the people who live here to feel good, to feel at home, to not be unaware of the neighbours and even to offer them a gift. The filter will also allow the building to be identified as a slightly quieter place than its neighbours and allow us to introduce a public space around the building, which will be at the centre of that space – even if this is a micro public space, offering different levels. The building, then, is anchored to a base, on a terraced garden. We’ll even use this to tuck away visitors’ cars, hopefully discreetly and elegantly. The position was the first challenge. The worst response would have been to design a building like every other building produced by an automatic urban system – like the ones we see most of the time, sadly, in today’s non-cities.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Cityscape, Windows, Facade

The landscape speaks volumes, whether it’s close-up or in the background. First, there are the different horizons, the line of the mountains, the undulating relief. There are railway tracks and trains. I love the poetry of the railway and I think its pungency will only intensify and be more and more freighted with nostalgia over the coming decades. We need to preserve the distant landscapes, and several apartments will be able to enjoy them; and we need to preserve the close-up landscapes too, along with an awareness of being part of a city that’s in the process of being built.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Cityscape, Facade

Thanks to a second façade that’s very light and only partial, Ycone plays down similarities and creates differences – in light, feel, and of course, planes – even if the differences are slight; above all, it plays on differentiation, at the level of each objective element. Because the orientations are different, the four façades are not the same. When you cover all bases like this, normally, things improve. But you have to really express these differences.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Image 21 of 42

Ycone signals that there are two buildings in one. The project offers low-level apartments more height and allows for the possibility of two apartments being sold together – something that sometimes happens – even if they’re not in the same category. What we want to ensure is that the typologies always raise questions to which there are no answers. The architect needs to create something akin to a film script, a sort of fiction that might make sense to those who live there. There’s nothing worse than finding yourself back at square one with an artefact that raises no questions at all.

Ycone La Confluence Residential Tower / Ateliers Jean Nouvel - Windows, Facade

Façades are designed over two planes and work on what happens between the two. This gap will be a living space, an in-between area, what the Japanese call ma. People are going to live there, have their breakfast there, have dinner, walkthrough, put in potplants... The two façade planes will superimpose two compositions that then form one slightly deeper composition. This can be read as unstable, but obviously, it’s not. The result is tied to a certain number of constraints. You’ll try to frame things from the inside, try to shield yourself from certain things. The result, seen from outside, will depend on the set of constraints that get revised, adjusted, and embellished if possible by the story that’s brought us here, and we’ll try to take that story a bit further to make it more perceptible.

TOUR YCONE: All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (with Photos)

La Confluence, Lyon’s architectural showcase

La Confluence, Lyon’s architectural showcase

Where the Saône and Rhone rivers meet, the La Confluence neighbourhood has become a place of urban experimentation, combining constructional daring with a commitment to sustainability. The former brownfield is witnessing the development of the 21st-century city, which is being invented by way of cultural venues and soft mobility.

It was one of the city’s last remaining industrial areas. Beyond the arches of Perrache train station, the district known by Lyon residents as “derrière les voûtes” (“behind the arches”) had been dying since the 1980s. It was the end of an era for the railway shops, warehouses, abattoirs, prison, wholesale market and postal sorting centre in this working-class neighbourhood brought down by modernity and access problems. In 1995, the city officials decided to make it Lyon’s new showcase through refurbishments and new builds. (Almost) thirty years later, the 150 hectares to the south of the Presqu’île offer a new face.

Kengo Kuma, Nouvel, de Portzamparc, and more

The first phase of the project (2003-2018) focused on the western half of the Presqu’île, between the Cours Charlemagne and the Saône, from Perrache to the southern tip. It is here, at the exact point where the Saône and Rhone rivers meet, that the Musée des Confluences’ vast deconstructivist building (40 metres high, 6,000 tons of steel) has stood since 2014. Created by the Coop Himmelb(l)au agency, the building dedicated to the “remarkable story of humanity” and its people has become the star of La Confluence.

Yet, the heart of the neighbourhood lies elsewhere: around Place Nautique, a basin dug at the edge of the Saône and surrounded by designer buildings. To make La Confluence shine, the approach has been to bring on board the heavyweights of architecture, standard bearers of the spirit of innovation trumpeted by backers. Near the Confluence shopping centre, the massive rectangular headquarters of the Hôtel de Région (2011) was designed by Christian de Portzamparc and the Tour Ycone (2019) by Jean Nouvel, while the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma made the astonishing Hikari the first positive-energy city block.

From one bank to another

The banks of the Saône best embody this creative drive. The most daring buildings line the pedestrian Quai Rambaud: the refurbished former harbour master’s office, the orange cube of Les Salins and Euronews’ apple green “box” (both by Jakob + MacFarlane), the Customs House refurbished by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, Rudy Ricciotti’s undulating Pavillon 52, and Odile Decq’s sombre Dark Point . Bars, lounge restaurants and cafe barges attract walkers and cyclists. Unmissable cultural venues, La Sucrière and its sun-soaked rooftop bar, Le Sucre, organise exhibitions, festivals and concerts all year round .

You will have to wait until 2025-2030 to see the whole neighbourhood completed. Launched in 2012, phase 2 aims to rehabilitate the eastern half of the Presqu’île on the Rhone side, where the wholesale market used to be held. Projects are following in swift succession: the former Saint-Paul prison has been restored to accommodate the Catholic University of Lyon, Strate design school has moved into an Odile Decq building, while the Ydeal development has sprung up.

Sustainable architecture and mobility

Mixing accommodation, offices and shops, Ydeal’s five buildings (2020, Clément Vergély and Diener & Diener) illustrate La Confluence’s sustainability ambitions. One of them has received a rammed earth façade, a local material with hygrothermal properties. Another has been designed according to the reversibility principle: the offices can be turned into accommodation and vice versa, depending on how the area develops. The roofs are equipped with 850 m² of solar panels, while a communal courtyard garden is home to a vegetable garden and compost bins.

  • ville : Lyon
  • pays : France
  • aeroport plus proche : Lyon-Saint Exupéry

To connect La Confluence’s islands, priority has been given to soft mobility. The tramway passes through the neighbourhood. It is crisscrossed by ten kilometres of cycle lanes. An electric shuttle runs along Quai Rambaud… La Confluence has gone from industrial to experiential.

YCONE RESIDENTIAL TOWER BY ATELIERS JEAN NOUVEL

The Confluence is an emblematic urban hub that will become historic, representative as it is of the 2000s and 2010s. The word ‘confluence’ suggests meeting, convergence. In this part of Lyon, there’s the meeting of many different individuals and social actors and the convergence of a great number of styles.

But Ycone isn’t aiming to be a city ‘monument’: this building will be part of the life of the new precinct and needs to have its own identity.

tour ycone lyon

We need to preserve the distant landscapes, and several apartments will be able to enjoy them; and we need to preserve the close-up landscapes too, along with an awareness of being part of a city that’s in the process of being built.

tour ycone lyon

Thanks to a second façade that’s very light and only partial, Ycone plays down similarities and creates differences – in light, feel, and of course, planes – even if the differences are slight; above all, it plays on differentiation, at the level of each objective element. Because the orientations are different, the four façades are not the same. When you cover all bases like this, normally, things improve. But you have to really express these differences.

Façades are designed over two planes and work on what happens between the two. This gap will be a living space, an in-between area, what the Japanese call ma. People are going to live there, have their breakfast there, have dinner, walkthrough, put in potplants… The two façade planes will superimpose two compositions that then form one slightly deeper composition.

Last but not least: Zur Farbenvielfalt gesellt sich ein differenziertes Glassortiment.

„Lyon is starting to look like Coney Island“, lautet ein Leserkommentar auf archinect.com 7 .

Ateliers Jean Nouvel: A nearly white „Ycone“ for La Confluence in Lyon

In La Confluence, Jean Nouvel, Pritzker Prize winner and architect of icons built worldwide, such as the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, Torre Agbar in Barcelona and Musée national du Qatar in Doha, demonstrates that residential buildings can likewise become the centre of attention. The new district of Lyon, with its distinctive name, is not lacking in spectacular buildings and was enriched by another one in 2019. Behind its bright and almost dissolved façade, the tower-like building contains mainly apartments and bears the no less telling name „Ycone“.

Like a pointed tongue or the head of a dolphin jumping into the water at exactly the point where the Rhône meets the Saône – that’s roughly the effect of the far end of the Lyon district, which is now called the same as what happens here: Confluence, in German Zusammenfluss . Between 1770 and 1850, this triangular southern tip of the Perrache peninsula was created by land reclamation to make room for industry, trade, and railways and for all those things the good Lyoner no longer wanted to have around him, such as prisons, slaughterhouses, etc. Since 2003, Lyon has been trying to transform this area of 150 hectares, which has become a wasteland, into a residential and commercial district.

The architectural zeal in the La Confluence district is expected to continue until at least 2025. There are already a few stars here and there, such as Jakob+MacFarlane’s Orange Cube, completed in 2010, which was so popular that the building for Euronews‘ headquarters – also known as the „Green Cube“ – was built as early as 2014. Many other renowned architectural firms were allowed to live it up in this urban project: for example Herzog & de Meuron – from whom the 2nd phase of the master plan originated -, coop himmelb(l)au, Odile Decq, Fuksas, MVRDV, to name but a few.

But perhaps all of Lyon had been looking for a very particular architect, and so in 2015, the French press announced „le come-back de Jean Nouvel“ 1 . With this, he was able to complete another work here, after his rebuilding of the Opéra national de Lyon almost three decades ago. This time it is a new building in the 2nd arrondissement. This residential tower with 16 floors, which along with the roof construction, has a height of approximately 64 m, is called Ycone. It offers 92 residential units (including 27 social housing units) ranging in size from 30 to 215 m 2 , and mix-used areas on the lower levels. The building is located in the street Passage Panama . Whereby at its feet, unfortunately, is not the Panama Canal, nor the Saône or Rhône, but something similarly gliding: a bundle of railway tracks. The latter, together with the all too densely situated office buildings, are not necessarily seen as a poetic element, but are also cited in terms of property prices; for despite the claimed affordability, they are rated as high 2 . The price per square metre is between 4,800 and 10,000 euros. But this did not seem to have deterred buyers: All apartments were sold within 6 months (35 % of them to investors) 3 .

Despite all these dry (though important) facts: Ycone is surrounded by water and harbour ambience, which most of the inhabitants can enjoy at least visually, just by its tower-like character. But this is not the only reason why some people might come up with a certain name when they first get to know Ycone: William Turner. The British painter with the incomparable penchant for the wet element had died in 1851 (i.e. shortly after the land reclamation of Lyon was completed) and we may assume that he would have discovered in this building a kind of soul mate of his paintings.

What is it that creates the Turner-Touch? It can be seen in the blurring and apparent smudging of boundaries (this intention is particularly well expressed in the abstract facade studies). Also, the brightness, more precisely the impression of light shining through and the delicate pastel colour atmosphere are part of it. There are probably few buildings where it is worthwhile to view their exterior under different weather conditions, under various lighting conditions. Ycone is an excellent opportunity for this.

So let’s start with the building envelope. The striking thing about it is quite obviously its multi-layered structure. It’s almost impossible to say how many layers there are (it makes such a dissolved impression), but in the end, there are only two. (Actually, there are three, more about that later). The first thing that catches the eye of the viewer is the fragile-looking metal and white-painted framework. This structure of aluminium profiles (which, incidentally, acts as a structural and material echo of the railway tracks) is placed in front of a balcony and loggia level running all around and is composed in such a way that different shapes of rectangles of various sizes are created. The orthogonal design principle seems to be deliberately random or arbitrary, perhaps to emphasise the feeling of looseness. The rectangles that form this „loose frame“ are sometimes left open, sometimes filled with glass. The vertically aligned glass elements in particular often overlap the concrete ceilings: a clever way of expressing the independency of the supporting structure and the shell on the one hand, while at the same time achieving the effect of blurriness or ambiguity already mentioned. Is this confusion intentional? It almost seems so, because the higher the viewers look up at the building, the more questions arise. For example: Why does this metal layer of the façade in the upper realms move away from the building – why this detachment? Depending on the side from which the building is viewed: From about the 7th or 11th floor this metal structure bends outwards. A possible explanation would be that this is the only way to express its detachment and lightness. If this upper area were not treated in this way, the airiness of the entire building envelope would be perceived as considerably less. A witty side effect is perhaps that this gill-like splaying of the upper ends of the façade makes the building look like a large Y in silhouette and thus the first letter of its name.

The climax of the almost floating lightness that is so characteristic of this residential building occurs in the true sense of the word on the roof of Ycone. For it is in this area that it now happens that parts of the façade shell seem to peel off, as it were, and glide gently and smoothly over the head of the building. (Remarkably, this construction is said to weigh 88 tons). According to the form, a persiflage of a gabled roof is created. It is structured in the same grid principle as the rest of the metal façade and is partly fitted with slats (instead of glass). Of course, besides aesthetic effects such as the play of light and shadow, there are also some pragmatic reasons for this type of roof. On the one hand, there is the function of subtle sun protection, because after all there is a swimming pool under the open sky. Furthermore, the roof construction is also conceivable as wind protection. On the other hand, however, there is also the suspicion that this upper finish has a completely different background. Because a gabled roof (even if only a copy of one) seems almost out of place for a tower (if one may call Ycone like that). Was the design office probably forced by planning requirements to provide shade for the top terraces of the apartments? And was the only way out of this situation to have the „gable areas“ overhanging them generously? Anyway, in the end, everything comes together very nicely. Because in this way the expression of the areas of the vertical façade that fold away at the top is enriched or even completed: If one now adds the sloping metal roof elements, the whole thing looks as if the outermost façade shell is bursting open or blossoming out towards the top.

Let’s stick to the latter metaphorical suggestion and get to the next important theme of this building: the colours. Jean Nouvel does not use anything bright or flowery. Rather, he was inspired by the Vieux-Lyon district, more precisely by its buildings from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and their pastel-coloured facades. But there is another reason for this special choice and Nouvel formulates it as follows: “I’ve tried, to the best of my powers of understanding and interpretation, to respect the specifications laid down by my friends, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, and to thereby play on the pattern of punctuations in white.“ 4 We recall that it was his Swiss colleagues who were in charge of the 2nd phase of the Master Plan in which white seems to play an important role in some way (about which Nouvel leaves us in the dark), which had to be adhered to. And Nouvel kept to it, but in his own way. A little bit mysterious, but quite consistent in his approach, he continues in his remarks about colours in Ycone: he would have diluted a drop of colour into white, a bit like the homeopaths, to create a trace of pastel 4 . What he might have meant by this is that he used colours in such a low dosage that one could practically call it non-existent and yet (if not striking, then at least subtle and appealing) it affects the whole organism of Ycone.

And just as an organism has a skin, so does this structure, even including the three layers as classified in biology or medicine. These are 1. the epidermis, the metal level of the façade already described and 2. the dermis, the intermediate zone formed by the balcony and loggia level that runs around on all sides, which Nouvel himself refers to as Ma 5 based on the Japanese vocabulary (and occupied by people in the most diverse everyday scenes, it is a not insignificant aspect of the facade design). And,  finally, there is 3. the hypodermis, the space-enclosing walls that recede, as it were, from the outermost layer. This „main façade“, which appears to be hidden, consists of concrete, wooden and aluminium frames covered with powder-coated aluminium cassettes. The chromatic sequence follows a concept. Earthy and vegetal tones appear in the lower zones. In the middle, the emphasis is on orange and ochre. And towards the sky, more and more blue dabs mix in. The palette comprises 21 tones. Here the influence of the layer of metal and glass in front of it should not be forgotten. For it is above all through the refractions and reflections of the glass surfaces that the perception of the colour nuances is additionally „coloured“. Sometimes, of course, the clouds or perhaps other objects in the surroundings are also mirrored in them, thus adding another visual factor of a completely immaterial nature and intensifying the potential of the shimmering.

It’s hard to miss: There seem to be no limits to the subtle phenomena at Ycone and so the inhabitants find them even in the inner life of their house. It is not possible to go into every detail, only this much can be said: Especially in the communally used rooms, great importance was placed on the atmosphere. Thus, in the corridors of the floors and/or on the stair landings, one is surrounded by neon-lit polycarbonate plates with a coloured gelatinous layer. Depending on the floor, they pick up four shades of the facade chromaticism.

All spaces in between, such as balconies and terraces, have a synthetic resin floor, which is intended to emphasise the feeling of continuity between the interior and exterior of each apartment. The terraces are given woven lattice railings: an uncomplicated solution that once again creates lightness.  Last but not least: the variety of colours is complemented by a differentiated range of glass. Five variations are used to ensure that the topic of transparency does not become boring: Two smooth types, one of which is reflective and the other clear, and three types of ornamental glass with different surface structures or patterns.

In short, in Ycone the structuralist and contextualist Jean Nouvel tries to show once again how critical he is of the worldwide phenomenon of cloning in architecture. The apartments or other spaces themselves (which will not be discussed further in this article) are at least as versatile as the room heights are slightly differentiated and differently cut units are offered in different sizes. The theme of flora (which Nouvel is increasingly incorporating into his work) also comes into its own, in the form of carefully selected trees in the lower zones. But the most important thing seems to be: Both the exterior and the interior of Ycone vibrate in a sea of colours and materials and light effects. But of course these design elements are not new in Nouvel’s work.  Indeed, it may even be worth making a few cross-references to some of his previous projects to understand the evolution of this design (e.g. La Marseillaise, completed in 2018, Tower25-White Walls, completed in 2015 or, to go back much further in chronology, Fondation Cartier, completed in 1994).

„France shows what sustainable urban development looks like,“ Hubertus Adam says in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung 6 in regard to Ycone. „Lyon is starting to look like Coney Island,“ reads a reader comment on archinect.com 7 . What is certain is that especially one thing seems to have been successful in this district, which has only been renewed for a few years now and already offers a wide range of opportunities for living, working, leisure and culture: its well-mixed or even lively urbanity. That this is not a matter that can be taken for granted is shown by the strenuous attempts in other countries, such as the HafenCity in Hamburg, which is or was frowned upon rather than popular as a trendy or wealthy district or eco-super-city, but its acceptance is supposed to increase. (Liveliness can only be felt and measured by personal experience. But probably for some people, it remains doubtful whether HafenCity will ever organically transform itself into a vibrant area).

To conclude: Despite its eloquent name and its standing out from the current silhouette of Confluence, Ycone is not necessarily an iconic eye-catcher at first glance. But this building, for all its own subtle expression, stands for lightness, for surprises and for a certain airy and colourful vibration, which can all be symbolic of the overall lively urban spirit of La Confluence. And insofar it is, after all, an embodiment, a (nearly white)  icon, in the truest sense of the word.

Jean Nouvel, an architect with an international reputation, has designed the new Ycone tower in Lyon's "La Confluence" district. Inaugurated on March 7 th 2019, it is a building of great diversity (92 apartments including 27 social housing units as well as stores) that resonates perfectly with the word "confluence" meaning meeting and mixing. A building in the spirit of its time but also a place to live in the future.

Jean Nouvel has allowed Ycone to find its place in the middle of existing multi-style buildings, while developing features that allow it to offer a comfortable lifestyle to all its users. This is true regardless of the apartment, the floor or the urban planning developments to come in the neighbourhood. It is in this sense that the large sliding doors CP 130, CP 68 and TS 68 windows from Reynaers Aluminium have been installed in this 14-storey tower.

50% minimum recycled material and lower environmental impact

An opening and a wide field of vision on the outside

Many housing programs today are looking for high acoustic comfort, outdoor surfaces in loggia or terrace, with maximum openings. This was the case with the Ycone tower, which, because of its location in the immediate vicinity of the railways and not far from the Autoroute du Soleil, also required special acoustic treatment. The architect Jean Nouvel first imagined a double skin facade (two superimposed planes). Then, opted for high-performance corner sliders in terms of sound attenuation: the Reynaers Aluminium CP 130 system in corner version, which allows you to enjoy outdoor spaces and let in as much light as possible while protecting against noise.

"Opening a large corner window creates a striking feeling of space and a wide uninterrupted view through window frames," explains Thomas Faustini, Key Account Manager at Reynaers Aluminium. This configuration adds a lot of cachet to a home. In addition, the large, slender handles offer both a contemporary look and a very simple and effortless use for the inhabitants." The angled windows provide more light in the rooms and allow you to enjoy the view of the city. Together with the CP 130 system, they also guarantee high acoustic comfort.”

Homes where it is good to live and where everyone feels at home

Jean Nouvel wanted to create comfortable places where people want to stay. Dwellings where you are not subject to the view of your neighbours and where privacy is protected. To this end, he sought the best ways to stay out of the gaze of the other without it representing a nuisance. "A comfort of life in which Reynaers Aluminium participates thanks to its CP 130 sliding doors," explains Thomas Faustini. This system allows to open large windows, with leaves of 2.60 m wide and 2.70 m high up to 300 kg, it can also reach 36 dB of acoustic attenuation. It also provides multiple configurations (from monorail to eight rails, galandage and angle).

Reynaers Aluminium's CP 130 system provides high-performance air, water and wind tightness for a sliding system: A*4 E*8A V*C3 and its thermal performance can reach a Uw of 1.3 W/m².K.

Another advantage is that CP 130 has an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD®): a standardised, registered and independently verified document that provides transparent and comparable information on the environmental impact of products over their life cycle (in accordance with ISO 14025). This EPD® form certifies the use of a minimum rate of recycled material by about 50%.
