The 25 Best Cities in the World in 2021

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite cities in the world.

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

What attracts travelers to certain cities around the world? Is it new Michelin-starred restaurants? Generations-old cultural heritage? Proximity to geographic wonders of the world ? Unsurprisingly, when it comes to determining the best cities in the world, it's all of the above for our discerning Travel + Leisure readers.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated cities on their sights and landmarks, culture, cuisine, friendliness, shopping, and overall value.

South Asia and Mexico had an impressive showing this year, with readers' top 10 including three Mexican cities (including the No. 1 spot!) and four South Asian cities (across Laos, India, Indonesia, and Thailand). Udaipur, on India's picturesque Lake Pichola, nabbed second place, up from last year, when it ranked No. 7. One reader described it as "enchanting," while another raved that it's "by far the most beautiful city in India." The other Indian city to make the list was Jaipur (No. 17), often referred to as the Pink City because of the remarkable pink buildings that line its streets.

Also in South Asia, Chiang Mai (No. 9) beat out Bangkok (No. 10) by just a hair, with readers specifically describing Chiang Mai as "more laid-back" and "less crowded" than Bangkok. Many of our readers were lured to Chiang Mai by the elephant sanctuary, but stayed for the "amazing people with a deep love for their way of life and cultures," as one respondent put it.

In Europe , we have nine World's Best Award–winning cities this year, from two Turkey hot spots — Istanbul (No. 3) and Bodrum (No. 16) — to the culinary capital of Spain, San Sebastián (No. 15), to Kraków, Poland, at No. 12.

And coming in ahead of cities like Cape Town (No. 20) and Antigua Guatemala (No. 24) is the lone American city on our list this year: Charleston, South Carolina. Love for the charming Lowcountry destination runs deep with our T+L readers. It's a nine-time winner for the best cities in the United States, and we had an unprecedented number of reader comments about this waterfront city known for its pastel façades and burgeoning arts scene. One reader says, "The charm of the city is its architecture," while another praises the "bevy of interesting and delicious restaurants that can satisfy all tastes."

Finally, we turn back to Mexico, which saw Mexico City and Oaxaca come in at No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. But it was San Miguel de Allende that once again took the No. 1 spot. Below, the reasons T+L readers voted for it, plus the full list of the best cities in the world for 2021.

1. San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

A marriage of neo-Gothic and Spanish-colonial architecture, the city — located 170 miles northwest of Mexico City — is a design lover's dream. "The mystery of what the houses look like behind the doors is intriguing," said one reader. Described as simply "magical" by more than one respondent, San Miguel de Allende also captivated readers with its history and growing culinary clout. Our respondents also gushed over the plentiful sights — "everywhere you look there are amazing sights and beauty and history" — and remarked on how walkable and easy-to-navigate the city is. From the rooftop restaurants to the central El Jardín and the Museo Histórico, San Miguel de Allende has mesmerized our readers, one of whom summarized: "San Miguel is an incredible city, very beautiful, historic, with friendly people, fantastic food and restaurants."

World’s Best Cities is a proprietary benchmarking methodology creative by Resonance, a leading advisor in tourism, real estate and economic development. The rankings, now in their 10th year, span three annual rankings (World’s, America’s and Europe’s Best Cities) and are determined by analyzing the performance of each city for a wide range of factors that have demonstrated moderate to strong correlations with attracting employment, investment and/or visitors. We call it the Place Power© Score and we apply the same proprietary performance measurement to our global clients, ranging from communities, to cities, regions and countries.

What makes a city the greatest in the world? For more than 15 years, Resonance—a consultancy group in real estate, tourism, and economic development—has taken a holistic approach to a popular “best-of” list.

Rather than just rely on data around, say, a place’s landmarks or how easy it is to bike there , Resonance uses a combination of core statistics (like GDP and number of Fortune Global 500 corporate headquarters) and qualitative evaluations by both locals and visitors (from online channels like Instagram and TripAdvisor) to paint a more comprehensive picture of a world’s best city.

The organization’s new 2024 World’s Best Cities list has just been released with many familiar destinations at the top. The cities on this year’s list—all with metropolitan populations of more than 1 million—have moved toward a postpandemic reality in their own ways: One rolled out 464 miles of bikeways (San Francisco), while another is imagining a place in which residents can access 80 percent of their daily needs and destinations in less than 30 minutes’ time by foot or bike ride (Dubai).

How the best city rankings work

“This year, we’ve regrouped our previous six categories [Place, People, Programming, Product, Prosperity, and Promotion] into three larger pillars that we utilize in our work with clients—Livability, Lovability, and Prosperity—to define each city’s relative Place Power Score,” Resonance Consultancy president Chris Fair said in the 2024 report. ”Our rankings are still built from 24 subcategories that we analyze to measure the performance of each city. . . . The criteria we select to rank these cities are limited to those that have historically shown positive correlations with attracting employment, investment and/or visitors.”

Livability: This category measures the quality of a place’s environment, both natural and built. Subcategories include walkability (the city’s walkability score on Walk Score), airport connectivity (the number of direct destinations served by the city’s airports), and higher education (the QS Rankings score of the top local university).

Lovability: The lovability pillar considers the vibrancy and quality of a city, as well as how much it inspires residents, businesses, and visitors to promote it. This includes culture (number of quality performing arts and cultural experiences recommended by locals and visitors according to Tripadvisor.com), shopping (number of quality shopping experiences recommended by locals and visitors according to Tripadvisor.com), and number of Instagram hashtags.

Prosperity: The prosperity pillar measures the strength of a city’s human capital. Subcategories include educational attainment (percentage of the population with a bachelor’s degree or higher), Fortune Global 500 companies (number of Fortune Global 500 corporate headquarters), convention center size (size of the largest convention center in a city), and poverty rate (percentage of the population living below the national poverty line).

Here’s how the world’s best cities ranked in the 2024 report, released October 3, 2023:

1. London, England

Rankings: Livability (1), Lovability (1), Prosperity (3)

“London is rarely quiet these days,” says Resonance. Most of the Tube’s lines are running at its pre-COVID cadence, with added metro stops like the October 2022-opened Bond Street’s Elizabeth station. Thanks to policies that give the U.K. the lowest corporate tax rate among G7 countries, Resonance says London’s resilience has been “buoyed by a sinking currency that has attracted investment and, of course, previously priced-out tourists. And new residents . . . who can now afford to check off a big item on the multi-millionaire bucket list: property in the planet’s most coveted city.”

Why we love it: London’s main sights might date back millennia, but the capital’s shops, bars, hotels, and restaurants continue to evolve on an almost weekly basis. Whether you’re outdoorsy, hungry, or bringing a family in tow, there’s a distinct London neighborhood to investigate —and it will likely look different from your last visit. 2. Paris, France

Rankings: Lovability (2), Livability (6), Prosperity (12)

“The city remains the most visited on the planet, with 44 million visitors last year,” Resonance says. “Good thing Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport used the past three years of lower volume to invest €250 million into a renovation of Terminal 1. Reopened this year, it now has a colossal junction building and a central lobby full of the latest tech to improve the traveler experience. Rail access and infrastructure are also unprecedented. A seven-hour direct Berlin-to- Paris TGV line launches next year, with more ambitious directs like the Venice-to-Paris Midnight Trains coming in 2025. No matter how they arrive, what Paris visitors new and returning will find is a city that has codified pedestrianism and alfresco living.”

Why we love it: As Paris gears up for the 2024 Olympics, it’s only getting better. Improved infrastructure, a commitment to pedestrians, and luxurious hotels add to a city we love for its world-class art, shopping, and global cuisine.

3. New York City, United States

The pandemic exodus led some to believe New York City’s reign was over, but this U.S. city’s number three ranking—the same as last year—proves that it’s not going anywhere. Resonance says tourism numbers for the city are skyrocketing from 33 million visitors in 2021 (which was less than half of 2019’s numbers) to a projected 61 million in 2023. NYC is welcoming back visitors in style with major upgrades to its international gateways: LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport all have new terminals, “with the new Terminal B at LaGuardia alone boasting 35 gates” and looking fine . Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad, and Thompson in Midtown are only a few of the impressive hotels ready to host incoming visitors—check out AFAR’s review of the $3,200-a-night Aman .

Why we love it: “The City” (as locals call it) consistently ranks for its culture; this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip hop music’s founding and the 100-year anniversary of the Museum of the City of New York. New sights and landmarks are constantly being added to classics like the Empire State Building, such as the viewpoints from Summit One Vanderbilt’s all-glass exterior elevators.

4. Tokyo, Japan

Rankings: Livability (3), Lovability (4), Prosperity (11)

“The Japanese government remains steadfast, keeping its target of 60 million visitors and $136 billion in tourism revenue by 2030. It’s not as delusional as it sounds: the country enjoyed record tourism for seven straight years and can now accommodate even more, with the expansion of the international terminal at Haneda, the city’s main airport (ranked #38 globally), and a planned 18-minute rail link from arrivals to downtown by 2031,” says Resonance. There’s much ado around Japan’s recent reopening to international travelers —and as the world’s best city for shopping, wallets will likely open on their visit to spots like the newly renovated Miyashita Park.

Why we love it: Ranked number in the survey’s restaurants subcategory, Tokyo is home to some life-changing ramen , making it a destination worth planning an entire trip around food. And if most of your travel budget goes to eating, don’t worry. There are plenty of affordable hotels in Tokyo to book.

5. Singapore

Rankings: Prosperity (2), Lovability (14), Livability (17)

Shooting up from its number nine ranking on the 2023 World’s Best Cities list, Singapore has become one of the continent’s most captivating cities, according to Resonance. And it’s not just iconic views from the rooftop infinity pool of Marina Bay Sands that are grabbing people’s attention. “A new waterfront district is being explored just south of the airport, called the Great Southern Waterfront, which is slated to build 9,000 housing units along Singapore’s southern coast,” the report says. “Locals are also buzzing about the forthcoming NS Square, a future outdoor multipurpose venue in the Downtown Core area of Marina Bay that will replace the popular Marina Bay floating platform.”

Why we love it: The Little Red Dot, as the city-state is affectionately called, is highlighted for biking and shopping; it earns top spots in our eyes (and stomachs) for its famous hawker stall street food, its garden-like airport terminal , and the reopened Raffles Singapore hotel, which has been welcoming travelers since 1887.

6. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Rankings: Prosperity (4), Lovability (5), Livability (35)

“Famed for outlandish developments like Palm Jumeirah, home to Atlantis, the Palm and the made-famous-by-Tom-Cruise Burj Khalifa—the tallest building in the world—the city has, over the years, made breaking world records a national pastime: tallest, longest, fastest, largest,” Resonance says. Moving forward, Dubai’s 2040 Urban Masterplan aims to make it feel smaller by developing a “20-minute city,” in which city residents can access 80 percent of their daily needs and destinations by either a 20-minute walk or bike ride.

Why we love it: Its Museum of the Future ; greater accessibility with more than 700 hotel options ; a new Michelin guide featuring 89 restaurants , including three with a Green star sustainability honor.

7. San Francisco, United States

Rankings: Prosperity (5), Livability (20), Lovability (28)

Despite San Francisco’s steep population decline and an office vacancy of about 30 percent, city leaders remain “undeterred,” says Resonance: The city is “rolling out the most daring bike and pedestrian infrastructure in America and the protected bike network now boasts 464 miles of bikeways, including 50 miles of new car-free/car-light streets in the past year alone.” Global talent continues to come, thanks to high salaries and the Bay Area, which Resonance says “remains the number one place for start-up innovation, powered by venture capital kept interested in the city’s famed ‘ecosystem’—for talent, for research and for universities.”

Why we love it: Besides being AFAR’s birthplace, there are endless things to do ( even for a local ). With plenty of vibrant neighborhoods to explore, it’s a no-brainer stop for those on the Pacific Coast Highway .

8. Barcelona, Spain

Rankings: Lovability (7), Livability (10), Prosperity (48)

Why we love it: Barcelona is an almost ideal European city, one with great weather year round and “era-spanning neighborhoods that are destinations at all hours,” says Resonance. Add bike-friendliness to the list; according the World’s Best Cities report, travelers coming to the city will find more than 150 miles of new bike lanes, as well as “daring initiatives like Eixos Verds (Green Axis), a network of quieter roads that share space equally between cars, bikes and pedestrians, and are dotted with benches and community squares.”

Why we love it: This Spanish city is home to miles and miles of beaches , iconic parks, and Gaudí’s iconic architectural landmarks . Its activities aren’t just limited to the daytime—Barcelona ranks number three in the nightlife subcategory.

9. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Rankings: Livability (5), Lovability (22), Prosperity (24)

According to Resonance, an attitude of care for others and willingness for locals to do the work is reflected in the city’s Top 5 ranking in its Livability score. Just look at the approach Mayor Halsema’s administration took in accommodating unhoused migrants during the refugee crisis. Making its livability sustainable has led to several efforts on the tourism end: Over the summer, city council moved to ban cruise ships from the city center as part of its clean-air efforts . Resonance says “tours and programs focusing on the city’s enviable livability and Dutch history” are also encouraging tourists “from the city center and out to the #8-ranked shopping and #11-ranked museums that pepper the city.”

Why we love it: With nonstop flights available from most U.S. cities, Amsterdam’s easy accessibility—and beautiful canals and world-class museums—make it a popular stop for any trip to Europe. In addition to its top-notch cultural offerings, Amsterdam is also on the forefront of sustainable tourism. In 2018, one hospitality company started to repurpose Amsterdam’s out-of-use bridge houses into charming stand-alone hotel rooms , and by 2030, all gas and diesel cars will be banned from the city.

10. Seoul, South Korea

Highlighted rankings: Prosperity (8), Livability (26), Lovability (31)

“In an astonishingly short span, South Korea’s capital has 180ed from war-ravaged city to high-tech hub,” says Resonance. “The city’s ascent is boosted by our eighth-lowest Poverty Rate ranking, sixth-most Global 500 firms located in town, and a growing start-up ecosystem waiting its turn to disrupt the incumbents. All that innovation is sated by the 176 Michelin-rated venues that have earned Seoul a #3 ranking in our Restaurants subcategory.”

Why we love it: The Korean wave has brought Seoul into the mainstream as traditions like Korean Banchan have gotten recognition. The food scene can be found in places like Gwangjang Market, “where you can eat everything from a soup of rice cakes and kimchi-tofu dumplings to squirmy live octopus (really),” says Resonance.

Top 100 International Tourist Destination Cities By Country

Which city is the most popular international tourist destination? Surprisingly, it’s not Paris, London or New York.

According to 2012 data from Euromonitor International , the number one tourist destination in the world was Hong Kong with 23.7 million visitors.

Singapore and Bangkok were ranked numbers 2 and 3 respectively, showing just how much Asian tourism has grown in recent years. London, at number 4, was the top ranked non-Asian city with 15.5 million international visitors and New York City, at number 8, was the most visited city in the Americas with 11.6 million tourists.

When looking at countries as a whole, the map at the top of the page is revealing. At first glance it shows just how few African countries made the list. Another interesting finding is that while London is the 4th most visited city, it’s the only UK city to make the list. Moreover, while many European countries have top 100 cities (Switzerland being a notable exception) none has more than Italy’s 4.

But that’s nothing compared to the big 3 who dominate the list:

• India has 6 cities on the list: Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Kolkata.
• The United States has 8: New York City, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Angeles, Orlando, San Francisco, Honolulu, Washington D.C.
• And, China has whopping 9 cities: Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Zhuhai, Suzhou, Guilin, Nanjing.

Plus, this doesn’t include Hong Kong (#1) and Macau (#5), which ae both Special Administrative Regions of the People’s Republic of China .

The results are biased. HK does get a massive flow of tourist but this can be explained by the fact that HK airport is a massive hub (works the same for Singapore airport). It’s not a touristic destination in itself, providing the tourist facilities out of HK international airport (very few) and the time people actually spend in hk. It’s more a stop over than a touristic destination. Then, you have the flow of Chinese tourists that cross the border on week ends to go shopping in HK. sqame situation, they benefit to the economy but can they actually be counted as part of the touristic industry ?

So yes, in term of people you can rank it that way but the figures do not say what kind of flows arrive to HK.

No, it is not based on inbound flights. It is based on the fact that thousands of mainlanders walk across the border every day to buy non-contaminated baby formula.

As Sa said concerning Hong Kong, this list measures arrivals of tourists, I assume, at the cities’ international airports (see report). This does not show how long tourists stay in these cities, if at all. Many of the cities are close to interesting historic and scenic areas.

It counts mainland tourists, who can walk across the border. But as far as “nothing to see” – have you ever actually been there?

Yes, I’ve been there several times. Besides shopping and a few sites, what can you see there. Paris, for example, is much much more worth it.

Here is an interesting fact about the list. Turkish city Edirne has only 200K population and not so much touristic to get in this list on 62th place in the world and 4th in Turkey. Why is it here? Because Edirne covers the western border of Turkey between Bulgaria and Greece and so the EU. It is not just touristic numbers, it is also industrial transportation and transit passages all over to Turkey. This list is not accurate.

Here are the 10 most visited cities in the world

For their culture, history, gastronomy or architecture, these cities draw in the most tourists in the world.

According to the latest rankings from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), 10 cities reign supreme in terms of tourism. Based on tourism figures for 2022, WTTC has identified the destinations where travellers spend the most money. The amount of investment in tourism by national and local authorities, as well as businesses, was also taken into account when drawing up this list.

Paris, the tourism world capital

The French capital, Paris , remains THE quintessential tourist destination. A city steeped in history, it keeps on fascinating visitors from all over the world. And with good reason, as Paris is a powerhouse when it comes to escapism and discovery. The Louvre remains the capital’s most visited museum, the Eiffel Tower is a classic tourist site, and Montmartre never ceases to amaze. Of course, the capital’s countless restaurants also know how to please tourists’ taste buds. Another factor putting Paris firmly at the top of the rankings is the large amount of investment that has gone into infrastructure and security in the run-up to the 2024 Olympic Games. According to the data used by the WTTC, this puts Paris in first place.

China and the United States, the other two big winners

China is the dark horse in this ranking. The country takes 3 places in the ranking, including 2 nd rank with Beijing . China has stepped up investment in the tourism sector since the tourism recovery following the pandemic. The WTTC predicts that by 2032, China will be at the top of the ranking. Quoted by CNN , Julia Simpson, President and CEO of the WTTC, said: “Major cities such as London, Paris and New York will remain world powers, but over the next few years Beijing, Shanghai and Macau will move up the list of top urban destinations.” The United States is also in the spotlight, with 2 cities: Las Vegas and Orlando, both of which attract visitors for their activities, casinos for Las Vegas and theme parks for Orlando.

The 100 best cities in the world have been ranked for 2024 based on livability, lovability and prosperity. We take a look at the results

In 2018, a UN study suggested that 55% (4.2 billion people) of the world’s population lived in urban areas.

This proportion is projected to increase to 68% by 2050. Wherever the world’s expats , digital nomads and remote workers choose to relocate, chances are it will be in a city.

With this in mind, Canadian consultancy film Resonance , which has offices in Vancouver, Montreal, Singapore and New York, has published its annual report ranking 100 cities with populations of over one million.

The firm’s analysis of 270 cities is now in its 15th year and is widely regarded as the most credible source of city performance.

Contrary to similar “best-of” lists, Resonance’s index assesses a city’s culture, diversity, prosperity, infrastructure and employment opportunities. The data comes from a combination of core statistics from 400 global cities as well as user-generated ratings and reviews.

Methodology

This year, Resonance has taken a slightly different approach to its best cities in the world ranking and regrouped its 24 factors into three key categories: livability, lovability and prosperity. They call this the ‘Place Power Score’.

The 24 factors cover a range of criteria including climate, access to outdoor space, education and work prospects, population diversity, leisure options and online popularity.

What is the world’s best city?

London is the best city in the world for the ninth year in a row. The ‘capital of capitals’ has taken the top spot despite concerns surrounding the city’s post-Brexit future . However, the report’s authors believe the city continues to draw talent and visitors en masse and will eventually weather the storm and even emerge stronger.

New York, America’s greatest city, is in third thanks to the high number of Global 500 companies located in the Big Apple as well as the city’s endless nightlife, shopping and attractions that sustain its ‘enduring allure’.

The report also highlights Tokyo’s popularity with shoppers as well as the city’s relentlessly expanding foodie scene . The metropolis offers as many restaurants as the top five cities combined – more than 100,000 in total!

This year, the city-state of Singapore has moved into the top five. It has been recognised for its prolific modern shopping malls, frequently touted as some of the world’s best. The city has also won praise for its new cycling routes and green spaces. Traditionally known for its manicured approach to nature, recent efforts have seen the city’s cycling and hiking infrastructure improved. Most notably, the 24km-long Rail Corridor – traversing the city from south to north along the former railway line that linked Singapore to Malaysia – is now among the city’s most popular cycling and hiking trails.

Dubai in the UAE is the sixth best city in the world thanks to its ‘alluring blend of over-the-top experiences, Arab heritage and luxury shopping’. The city is arguably the globe’s most cosmopolitan with almost 83% of its population foreign-born – the highest proportion of any city in the world. Many of its expat community tend to be well-educated – performing consistently well for Educational Attainment globally.

World Tourism Rankings

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates that internationally there were just 25 million tourist arrivals in 1950. 68 years later this number has increased to 1  billion  international arrivals per year.

Every country on Earth has something to offer international visitors, from the pyramids in Egypt to the rain forests of Brazil or the sidewalk cafes of Paris but which countries attract the most visitors of all? Most of the countries with the highest tourism rates are located in Europe, whose rich history, architecture, and cultural influence make it an appealing destination for many travelers. Countries positioned on or near a body of water are also very popular, particularly those that offer a relaxed, low-key atmosphere mixed with beautiful beaches and ocean views.

International Arrivals Per Year

According to the  World Tourism Organization’s  yearly highlights report, there was a growth of 7% in international tourist arrivals in the last 10 years. Europe makes up 51% of the 1,326 million figure, followed by Asia and the Pacific at 24%. Economic gain through tourism peaked at US$ 1,340 billion, divided up between Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and Americas.

While tourism has picked up slightly in 2021, they still fall far short of the pre-pandemic numbers. Late 2020 projections were hopeful that the industry would be back on track by late 2021, but the ongoing nature of the pandemic has thwarted that optimism. As of late 2021, most estimates do not expect the industry to rebound to 2019 (pre-COVID) levels until sometime in 2023 at the earliest.

US Tells Staff in Israel Not to Travel Outside Cities Amid Iran Threat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Thursday it had restricted its employees in Israel and their family members from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Be'er Sheva areas amid Iran's threats to retaliate against its regional adversary.

Iran has vowed revenge for the April 1 airstrike on its embassy compound in Damascus, ratcheting up tension in a region already strained by the Gaza war.

"Out of an abundance of caution, U.S. government employees and their family members are restricted from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv (including Herzliya, Netanya, and Even Yehuda), Jerusalem, and Be'er Sheva areas until further notice," the U.S. embassy said in a security alert on its website on Thursday. "U.S. government personnel are authorized to transit between these three areas for personal travel."

War in Israel and Gaza

Washington has a policy of informing all American citizens via such warnings when it updates security measures for its personnel in a country.

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday Iran was threatening to launch a "significant attack in Israel," and that the U.S. remained committed to its ally's security.

Asked about the security alert, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller noted that Iran had been making public threats toward Israel.

"We conduct ongoing assessments all the time about the situation on the ground," Miller said at a press briefing. "I'm not going to speak to the specific assessments that led to us to restrict our employees' and family members' personal travel, but clearly we are monitoring the threat environment in the Middle East and specifically in Israel."

Here are the latest Power 10 rankings for Week 8 of college baseball.

1. Arkansas ( Previous: 1)

Arkansas holds steady up top after a 4-0 week, a sweep over Ole Miss moving to a 27-3 record.

2. Clemson (2)

The Tigers hold strong too. Clemson swept Notre Dame over the weekend to move to 28-3 on the year. 

3. Texas A&M (3)

Texas A&M also stays put after winning the series over South Carolina. Ryan Prager impressed yet again moving to 6-0 on the year as he fanned 12 on Friday night. 

4. Tennessee (4)

The Vols stand at No. 4 after taking 2 of 3 from Auburn. 

5. Oregon State (5)

Oregon State rounds out the unchanged top 5 after a weekend sweep over Arizona State. 

6. Vanderbilt (6)

Vandy handed LSU its 4th straight SEC series loss and moved to 25-7 on the season after a huge run-rule win in the series finale. Carter Holton fanned 10 as the offense had 14 hits including two home runs and 5 RBI from Braden Holcomb.

7. Duke (8)

Duke moves up a spot with Florida dropping way out. Wallace Clark walked it off for the Blue Devils on Sunday to secure the first sweep in program history over Miami. 

8. Virginia (10)

Virginia moves up as well since Dallas Baptist dropped out. In the series opener against North Carolina, freshman Henry Ford hit three home runs including the go-ahead blast in the eighth inning to pick up a top-10 series win over the Tar Heels. 

9. Kentucky (NR)

And finally, two more teams enter the Power 10.  Kentucky has been turning heads and now has four straight SEC series wins including the latest sweep over Alabama. They pretty much dominated the Tide too, closing out the last two games of the series with a 7-0 win and a 10-1 win. 

Dominic Niman had a complete game shutout on Saturday as he threw 100 pitches and allowed only one Alabama hitter to reach second base. He did not walk a player and struck out seven. Then Mason Moore pitched seven innings on Sunday allowing just one run. An impressive outing for the Wildcats.

10. East Carolina (NR)

And lastly, ECU enters the Power 10. A lot of you have been asking for the Pirates in the top 10 and after two solid weeks following their series loss to UTSA and a few teams dropping out, the Pirates are in. ECU took down NC State mid-week then won the series over FAU. Trey Yesavage registered 11 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings on Friday night.

School of Business graduate program surges in top rankings

A U.S. News & World Report methodology change rewards schools for job placement, graduate earnings

The UC Riverside School of Business increased 20 positions in a U.S. News & World Report 2024 graduate school ranking released this week. UCR’s business school was the benefactor of a methodology change this year that places greater emphasis on post-graduation earnings and how quickly graduates found jobs.

The School of Business’ Master of Business Administration program ranked No. 90 on the business school list, released Tuesday, April 9. Though 506 accredited institutions were canvassed, only 124 U.S. graduate-level business programs provided sufficient information on post-graduation earnings and job placements to merit inclusion on the U.S. News list.

“The school’s ascent in the rankings is a testament to its strategic initiatives, such as the expansion of its facilities and the enhancement of its academic offerings, which align with the evolving demands of the global business landscape,” said Rami Zwick, associate dean of graduate programs for the School of Business.

The rankings released this week are based in part on reputational surveys sent to more than 15,000 academics and industry professionals, including corporate recruiters. In the surveys, deans, program directors, and senior faculty are asked to judge the academic quality of a program.

In addition to the surveys, scoring factors selectivity — gauged by graduate exam test scores; undergraduate GPA, and acceptance rate. About half of the score is based on a change this year that places greater emphasis on earnings — assessing post-graduate salaries by profession — and successful job placement. The revised job placement metric rewards business schools when their graduates get jobs quickly — either when they graduate or within three months of graduation.

Separately, the business school’s part-time MBA program was ranked No. 73, an increase of three positions from the past year. That ranking was among 269 universities.

In fall 2024, the School of Business will mark the 55th anniversary of its founding and the 30th anniversary of the A. Gary Anderson School of Management with the opening of a new 63,400-square-foot academic building .

UCR’s School of Education was ranked No. 86 out of 237 positions in the graduate school rankings, which considered only doctoral-level education programs. Last year, the school ranked No. 80.

The education rank is based on research expenditures; assessments by education-school and graduate-school deans and by professionals including recruiters and school superintendents; total degrees awarded; student-faculty ratio; faculty awards; and selectivity, measured by acceptance rates.

U.S. News this week postponed publication of its rankings for medical and graduate engineering programs after some universities questioned the rankings methodology for those programs.

U.S. News & World Report, the standard-bearer among college rankings, publishes its anticipated undergraduate rankings every fall. In the most recent rankings, released in fall 2023, UCR climbed 13 positions to No. 76 overall among U.S. private and public universities. UCR was ranked No. 2 nationally in social mobility, which considers the degree to which a university elevates its graduates to a higher standard of living.
