Hull to Rotterdam: Getting the ferry to Rotterdam with P&O Ferries

I took the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam with P&O Ferries and here’s what I thought about it with some travel tips for anyone planning to do the same.

I love this fast paced world we live in. A world where you can fly to the other side in a day, you can speak to anyone at any time and you can order your shopping to be delivered to your door within a couple of hours!

While I love the convenience and speed of modern life, I also yearn for a time when life was slower and simpler. It’s a time I’ve only experienced through films, books and tales from grandparents who recall their youth, but there’s something so calming about the thought of having to do things slowly .

No rushing, no stress, no traffic jams, no last-minute panic as you hurry through airport security (that’s usually me!)

I’m not the only one who feels like this. You’ve probably noticed a huge surge in popularity for ‘doing things slowly’. We’re seeing more people getting back to basics in all areas of their lives and living a slower, more thoughtful life. It’s funny how things go full circle. It was once normal to do things slowly and then it became a luxury to do them quickly. And then we realised quickly isn’t always best and it’s such a luxury to have the time to do them slowly again!

This especially applies to travel and slow travel is such a luxury. If you have the time to travel slowly, it’s something I can’t recommend enough. Road trips with no itinerary, camping holidays with no plans and city breaks with no intentions other than to have fun. This is my favourite kind of holiday!

Taking the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam

This is exactly what I did when I took the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam with P&O Ferries and I loved how relaxing and stress-free the whole experience was but, most of all, I loved how slow it was!

I took an overnight ferry which leaves Hull at 8.30pm. Boarding commences at 4pm for foot passengers and the last time you can board is 7pm. This makes it a really nice option for people who live locally as you don’t need to take any extra time off work.

I’d taken the train from my home in Chester to Hull. From Hull train station I took a taxi to the ferry port. The taxi to Hull ferry port took about 20 minutes in busy traffic and cost £11.

The ferry from Hull to Rotterdam takes 12 hours and your holiday begins the second you step on board. Boarding the ferry was quick and simple and within 15 minutes I was in my cosy little cabin. Ten minutes later and I was in the bar with a window seat and a glass of wine waiting to watch the ferry leave the dock!

Travelling by ferry is a funny one because it’s exciting and exhilarating but also slow and relaxing. I was bursting with excitement as we left Hull and the horn blew to sound our departure, but my excitement didn’t quite match the pace we were travelling, you could barely even tell we were moving!

After finding my bearings on the ferry (and then losing them a few times because ferries are very disorientating!) I made my way to the buffet for dinner. Now I know I shouldn’t be so surprised about this but dinner on board was delicious! There was a carvery with beef and ham, Yorkshire puds and all the trimmings, or you could have a choice of three curries or a chilli. There was also a hot food buffet with salmon and ribs and a salad section and a brilliant desert section too.

I then headed to Starbucks for a pre-bedtime cuppa and before long the motion of the ferry was sending me to sleep.

There are lots of amenities and entertainment on the ferry with a few shops similar to the Duty Free shops you’d find at the airport. There are casinos, bars, an al a carte Brassiere restaurant, an all you can eat buffet, a café serving Starbucks coffee, live music, cabaret, a kid’s play area and there are even two cinemas showing 3 different films throughout the evening for just £4.00. You definitely won’t be bored on the ship but, if you’re anything like me, you’ll use your travel time as a great chance to catch up on much-needed sleep!

Here’s a look around the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam

Getting the ferry to Rotterdam with P&O Ferries

I woke up to the sound of the captain’s voice over the tanoy at about 7.00am (local time) announcing our arrival into Rotterdam. We were arriving in 90 minutes so I packed up my things and headed to the breakfast buffet.

Breakfast was, once again, delicious with a full English available as well as cheeses and bread, fruit, yoghurt, pastries and sweet treats like pancakes.

Leaving the ferry was just as easy as getting on; there was a 2-3 minute wait at passport control and two coaches were waiting outside to whisk us off to either Amsterdam or Rotterdam. I’d chosen to stay in Rotterdam rather than travel slightly further to the more famous city of Amsterdam. I love Amsterdam but I wanted to see somewhere new and I’d heard Rotterdam had a really cool and creative vibe that I was excited to explore. Thankfully, I made the right choice and I loved it. Here’s my Rotterdam city guide and my favourite things to do in Rotterdam.

The bus ticket cost €9.25 for one way and I bought a ticket from inside the ferry port but you can also buy them when you’re on-board the ferry or pre-book them when you buy your ferry ticket.

p and o cruises hull to rotterdam

It was a short drive to Rotterdam Central Station and from there I walked to my hotel, nhow . I quickly dropped off my bags before heading back out to explore.

We had docked at about 8.30am and I was on the bus by about 9 and in Rotterdam City Centre by 9.30am. Then by 10.30am I’d been to my hotel and was back out again! It was so nice to be in the city and ready to explore so early. Even very early flights rarely allow you to get to your hotel, drop off your stuff and be back out by 10.30am – and if they did, you’d barely sleep the night before and would be too exhausted to do anything!

Coming home with P&O Ferries

My return journey was just as smooth and simple as my departure.

Once again, I took the coach transfer from Rotterdam Central Station at 5pm which took me straight to the ferry. I was travelling on a Friday night this time so it was a bit busier with Dutch people travelling to the UK for the weekend.

I chose to upgrade my room this time and paid £20 for a cabin with a window and twin beds rather than bunks. One of the beds folded up which gave me a bit more space and it generally felt a bit more luxurious. I was also given the option of paying £50 for a double bed and a mini bar with all drinks and snacks included.

When I arrived in Hull the following morning there was a bus waiting at the ferry port to take passengers into the city centre. It cost me £2.30 to get the bus to the train station where I caught the train to Manchester.

Travel tips for travelling from Hull to Rotterdam on the ferry

Go for a cabin upgrade.

If budget allows I’d recommend splashing out and getting a cabin with a window. The interior cabins are nice and they’re really cosy but it’s extra special to wake up with a sea view.

Use the shuttle transfer

There’s a shuttle transfer from Rotterdam ferry port into either Rotterdam City Centre or Amsterdam City Centre. It’s a quick, easy and affordable service so I highly recommend it. You can book tickets for this when you book your ferry ticket.

You might not get phone signal in your cabin

Be aware that you might not get phone signal in your cabin. It’s not a big deal but if you’re relying on your phone to tell you the correct time then it might confuse you. I’m used to my phone automatically adjusting to time zones but it obviously doesn’t do this when it has no signal so it’s something to keep in mind when you’re setting your alarm before bed!

WiFi is available

You can purchase wifi onboard for £3.00. I found that my 4G worked on my phone for more than an hour after departure so I was fine using that.

There is an outside deck

There is an outside deck where you can get some fresh air, enjoy the views or have a cigarette if you’re a smoker.

Why would you take the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam?

If you’re travelling with a vehicle.

The main reason most people will take the ferry to Holland is because they have a vehicle with them and this is a simple, hassle-free option to get your vehicle abroad.

If you don’t like to fly

If you’re not a fan of flying then taking the ferry to Holland is a great option to avoid the stress and anxiety that may come with flying. Just because you don’t want to get on a plane doesn’t mean you can’t go abroad!

If you want to make the most of your time in the destination

Because you travel overnight from Hull to Rotterdam you don’t ‘waste’ time flying or at the airport. I know it takes longer but you technically ‘waste’ less time because you spend the majority of your time on the ferry sleeping! You arrive in Rotterdam first thing in the morning and you need to be back on the ferry at 5pm. This gives you much longer in the destination then you would get if you flew avoids super early mornings and super late nights.

It’s a great option if you’re travelling with children

Like I mentioned above, this overnight ferry service to Holland avoids early mornings and late night travel so it’s great if you’re travelling with kids. There were loads of children on my ferry because it was the Easter holidays and they were all having a great time and were so excited. The evening entertainment has a family-friendly vibe and family rooms are available.

Take your pets

You can take cats, dogs and small animals on board with you! Cats and dogs must go in the kennels which are air-conditioned and animals are checked on every two hours. You can also go and see your pet to make sure they’re OK!

For a stress-free travel experience

If, like me, you enjoy this slow pace of travel then you’ll love getting the ferry to Holland. It was absolutely stress free and I loved arriving feeling well rested and ready to explore.

If you live in/near Hull

The ferry is a particularly great option for anyone who lives locally to Hull. It’s a hassle-free option if you’ve only got a short trip to the ferry port.

I have been twice march 17th-18th 2017 and same date 2018, the first time was amazing calm an amazing experience! Would advise it to anyone! However, my second trip as stated 2018 was thee worst i have ever experienced. On the sun deck having a cig at 01:00 watching the glasses and optics full of drink smashing everywhere due the angle of deck sway, i was quite literally holding onto the bolted down table, decided to try and get some "sleep", was sliding from being stood on my head to standing on the cabin wall almost. Im serious 45 degree to 45 degree. Pretty sure the antiroll tanks in the ship had stopped working, if this was the case then its not just the staff onboard but the actual crew deserve a medal!

Just thought people should know that its not all fun and games when it comes to the north sea... the weather and mechanical faults can make a fun trip a ride of a life time!

Tuesday 8th of February 2022

Wow, that sounds horrific! Thank you for sharing your experience Tom. Is it good to know that it isn't always plain sailing!

Thursday 15th of July 2021

Hello Monica, Can you provide details of the coach operator that took you from Rotterdam Central to the P&O Ferry Terminal please. I don't see a place to add that when booking the ticket. Thanks

Sunday 18th of July 2021

Hi Neil. I actually booked my ticket on the boat. Virtually everyone gets off the ferry and onto the bus so it's not really something you need to worry about because they'll be expecting you to want to get on it so there will be an easy way to book your coach ticket once you're on the ferry or even as you get on the bus.

Friday 21st of February 2020

Hi, Monica. what a great blog. Everything one would need to know. Every pertanent question answered. Which can only be answered by someone who really cares about what they are doing. I totally agree about the ferry. I worked and traveled on the P&O ferries, so I have seen it from both angles. It can be very rewarding traveling at that pace, However, you always get someone who just doesn't care about others. I always use a sleep app on my phone, which plays natural sounds. (i use the fan one) with bluetooth headphones , and I can't here a thing. Brill. Also, the walls are quite thin and you can (if you're unlucky) be sleeping next door to a snorer. Not good. Thanks again for the info. keep up the good work. Howard

Hull - Rotterdam . The cabins have been refurbished and are lovely and comfy. We had a 2 bunk standard and upgraded club which cost £45.00. On our return we didnt want to upgrade as we didnt watch tv ..... but we did swap for a window cabin with 2 singles low down which also has a kettle with tea and coffee. The 2 bunk standard isn't spacious but we didnt like to climb or just face the wall, so the swap was well worth it. The staff on bord are very friendly and meet all needs. The crossing is fab as is breakfast when you rise the next morning. I just wish P&O had good offers from the continent as they do in the UK.

Hello, Thank you for sharing your experience with us, we're really glad to hear you have enjoyed the accommodations and food offered on board. I'm told by marketing that we offer similar offers, but they run at different times of the year. Once again, thank for taking the time to leave a review. We look forward to welcoming you on board again soon. *Shakira

Avoid if foot passenger. There are no links with public transport at either end. P&O provide wholly inadequate information about this . Their website says transport is available when it isn't. They don't respond to inquiries in a timely manner.

Hello, Thank you for your feedback, we always appreciate our customers getting in touch with us. The lack of transport on this route is only a temporary measure. We usually offer a coach transfer from Europoort to Rotterdam or Amsterdam. However, with travel to the Netherlands being restricted for essential reasons only and the hospitality industry currently closed, our transfers are suspended up to and including the 3rd February 2022. This is while we wait for news from the Dutch government on the re-opening of the hospitality industry. Our social media team are available 24/7 to respond to any enquiries you may have. You can reach them on Facebook or Twitter via direct message and our team will be happy to help you with any information you need. We apologise for the experience you had on this occasion and hope to see you on board again in the future. *Ben

Staff wiping down all the surfaces also social distanceing being adhered to. The disappointment was the cabin, being pensioners having to pull down the bunk bed and climbing up to sleep in it

Arrived in Hull as a group of 5 to be told even if Double jabbed we still needed a test for £35 in Total £ 175 extra. Food in main Restaurant mainly warmed up from previous meal , complained about the temperature of food to be told all food is checked regularly and that was it. Staff were really great by the way. On return was even worse , same ferry Pride of Hull , tests were €69 euros each Total €345 to get on ferry and same again with food , rice and vegetables were cold.. Didn't fancy risking breakfast so tried getting a refund on Tickets for all 5 people to be told No refund. 😡👎

I decided to sail a different route home from the Netherlands, for a change; I usually sail Stena from Hoek van Holland to Harwich. Before booking I checked on the P&O website which confirmed that there was a bus transfer service from Rotterdam, as I knew that the Europoort terminal was a long way from the city. Unfortunately I only learned after booking (from the Rotterdam tourist office, having spent hours searching online) that P&O has cancelled the bus transfer due to Covid. This despite the fact that the ferry hasn’t been cancelled due to Covid; and that a full bus service is operating all over Rotterdam. This resulted in me having to spend a lot of money on a private transfer to the ferry terminal, which I hadn’t budgeted for. Only after learning that P&O customer service was closed for the weekend! I assumed that P&O was a prestigious company with a long and proud reputation. So sad that it has such little respect and consideration for its foot passengers. I would heartily recommend fellow ferry travellers from Rotterdam to England to stick with Stena; the Metro from Rotterdam goes right up to the ferry. Though for my trip next month I’m sailing DFDS from Newcastle to Amsterdam; DFDS have seen fit not to cancel their bus transfers :-) I should add that the ferry crossing itself was great; my cabin was very comfortable and the on board staff were lovely. I’d love to have awarded a higher score, but you have to get the fundamentals right.

p and o cruises hull to rotterdam

They oblige people to pay 35 pounds for a COVID test before they give the boarding pass even if you don't need one!!!It's clearly written on the page of the Dutch Governement web site...NO need of a test if you just transit for less than 12 hours. They didn'want to hear anything about it.You feel stolen. It's only to make money. As soon as you sit somewhere you have a crew member asking if you want a drink. If you drink one, nearly finished, they ask you if you want a new one...NEVER again if possible Hull-Rotterdam

Passengers stuck on cruise 'to nowhere' after ship was denied entry to New Zealand

p and o cruises hull to rotterdam

Passengers on an Australian cruise ship have been at sea for a week after a dirty hull prevented the boat from docking in New Zealand – with some experiencing long bouts of seasickness.

The 13-day-long P&O Pacific Adventure cruise departed from Sydney on Nov. 20 and was intended to take passengers around New Zealand, including stops at Wellington and Fiordland National Park, and return to Sydney on Sunday.

The cruise has scrapped the New Zealand leg of the cruise and is slated to arrive in Hobart, a city in Tasmania, Australia, on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Carnival Australia, which owns P&O Cruises Australia, told USA TODAY.

“P&O Cruises Australia can advise a change to the compensation for guests on board Pacific Adventure, after the ship was unable to visit New Zealand,” the cruise line said in a statement.

Upon arrival at the Bay of Islands on Nov. 23, the ship was not allowed to dock.

New Zealand has strict biosecurity laws that require a ship to be cleaned in order to reduce the risk of invasive species entering the country’s environment, Mike Inglis, Biosecurity New Zealand’s northern regional commissioner, told USA TODAY in an email.

“We know that almost 90% of the exotic marine species already in New Zealand likely arrived here as marine growth on the submerged surfaces of international vessels,” Inglis said.

Can we have eco-friendly cruising? What to know about zero-emission ships.

A photo sent from the ship to Biosecurity New Zealand showed “high-risk organisms including mussel and oyster growth and could pose a risk to New Zealand if the ship cruised in our waters,” he said.

Bad diving conditions prevented the cruise staff from finishing the cleaning of the hull.

As the ship revised its itinerary, the 2,781 passengers had to stay onboard “on this crummy cruise to nowhere,” one passenger wrote on a Facebook page for the cruise.

Guests have been reportedly feeling seasick because of the extended time out at sea and choppy waters. A passenger told The Guardian that sick bags are “quickly disappearing” from around the ship.

On Facebook, multiple guests wrote they were going to abort the rest of the cruise and fly home after the board docks in Hobart.

At first, the cruise line offered a 50% future cruise credit, but that was changed to a full refund and a $300 per person on board credit.

“We have listened to the feedback from our guests and understand not all of them wish to cruise with us again,” the cruise line said in a statement. “Again, we apologise for the change in itinerary, and thank our guests for their patience and understanding.”
