The 2010-built Norwegian Epic cruise ship belongs to a unique vessel class and has no sisters by design. NCL Epic was the fleet's largest vessel until the arrival of the new Breakaway-Plus class ships.

The vessel (IMO number 9410569) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311018500) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a subsidiary company of the shipping corporation Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH). NCL was founded in 1966, headquartered in Miami (Florida USA) and publicly traded (NASDAQ) company listed on NYSE ( NYC ). NCLH's major shareholders are the corporations Apollo Global Management (American), Genting Group (Malaysian) and TPG Capital (American). In 2017, the brand NCL had a worldwide cruise market share 8,7% (passengers) and 8,4% (revenue). NCLH (shipowner) owns the brands NCL , Oceania and RSSC-Regent .

The 4200-passenger ship Norwegian Epic is the latest cruise ship owned by Norwegian Cruise Line before the launch of Norwegian Breakaway (2013). Epic became operational in June 2010. The vessel pioneered the ice bar at sea. She sails the most in the Caribbean and Europe offering new experience and entertainment proposed by the Blue Man Group at sea. Norwegian Epic offers new things like the Studios, planned for people traveling solo, and the private Haven. There are also a lot of options for dining such as traditional fine dining, endless buffets plus gourmet French, Japanese Teppanyaki, a traditional steakhouse and more.

Decks and Cabins

Norwegian Epic staterooms (2114 total, in 38 grades) include 348x Suites, 1086x Balcony, no Oceanviews, 560x Inside and 128x Studios (single cabins). NCL Epic ship featuress 75x “The Haven” staterooms and the biggest number of single-occupancy cabins (for solo travelers) - a total of 128. The ship is also unique for lacking Oceanviews. Most staterooms are sized 125-155 ft2 (12-15 m2). The largest accommodations are The Haven Deluxe Owners Suites (730 ft2 / 68 m2, with wraparound terrace sized 120 ft2 / 11 m2).

The boat has 19 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

NCL Norwegian pioneered the freestyle dining concept (eat whenever, with whomever and wherever you want). The concept is taken to a new level on the Epic. Expect to pay extra for the speciality restaurants, though there are plenty of spots included in the cruise fare. Most mega-ships feature a massive dining hall with big tables, but Epic goes another route. Closest to the standard here is the 592-seat Manhattan Room, with its two-story windows and a polished dance floor.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Most Norwegian Epic shows, even the free ones, need tickets though these can be booked at the box office on Deck 6 or online. The later the show, the smaller the audience, so better go later if you are in a big group and prefer to sit together. For karaoke, billiards and late-night dancing, there is adults-only Bliss Ultra Lounge, featuring three bowling lanes, non-stop music and plasma screens. The Cirque Dreams & Dinner show is set in the 2-floor Spiegel Tent. The show is a mix of shrill singing, acrobatics and food, with tickets starting at $29.99. This space also hosts the Second City's 3-times-a-cruise and murder-mystery lunch for $20. The ship has a total of 9 jacuzzis and 7 pools. Entertainment options also include the NCL's FIREWORKS show (on each voyage), "Rock of Ages", "Cirque Dreams", "Illusionarium" (magicians show).

Additional amenities include: Complimentary 24-hour Room-Service, Supervised Kids Program ("NCL Kids"), Internet/WiFi Access, Laundry. NCL Epic tipping/gratuities are US$12 pp per day. The Epic cruise ship does not allow onboard weddings.

The ship's Aqua Park has 2 swimming pools, 5 whirlpools/hot tubs, a kids' pool, 3 waterslides (including the Epic Plunge bowl slide). The SplashGolf is a retrofit to the ship's existing splash pad (part of the Aqua Park area). It is located under the waterslides on pool deck 15 and combines 2 water fun attractions (splash pad and miniature golf) into one interactive water play facility for toddlers and small kids.

NCL Epic's SplashGolf was designed by Adventure Golf Services (a company specializing in the design and construction of mini-golf courses). The facility was installed in October 2015, during the ship's drydock refurbishment in Brest France . Instead of traditional solid mini-golf balls, SplalshGolf's balls are larger-sized and floating. The hole cups are also larger.

Itineraries

Norwegian Epic itinerary program is generally based on Mediterranean voyages (leaving roundtrip from homeports Civitavecchia-Rome and Barcelona ) and 7-day Caribbean itineraries out of homeport San Juan Puerto Rico . Transatlantic crossings (RepositionCruises.com) between Europe and the Caribbean are offered seasonally, in spring and fall.

In winter 2023-2024 (December-April) NCL homeported the ship in Port Canaveral/Orlando (Florida USA) . The winter schedule included 7-day Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, all of which visiting NCL's Bahamian island Great Stirrup Cay, in addition to popular island destinations like St Thomas USVI, Puerto Rico, Dominicana (Puerto Plata), BVI (Tortola), Mexico (Cozumel), Jamaica (Ocho Rios), Grand Cayman.

Epic is NCL's unique "F3 Project" liner and has no sisterships. The vessel is exactly 32% smaller by GT in comparison to Royal Caribbean 's (and world's) largest Oasis-Class ships.

Ship's Inaugural Cruise (Maiden Voyage) was a Cruise to Nowhere from NYC New York (itinerary July 2-4, 2010). This so special event also featured Macy's (luxury department stores chain) 34th Annual "Fourth of July" NYC fireworks show - on the ship! Note: Macy's Stores sponsor NYC's 4th of July fireworks since 1976.

Ship's first Transatlantic crossing ( Southampton to NYC) started on June 24, 2010. Epic was at that time the largest passenger vessel to visit NYC's Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

All outside staterooms have balconies. Epic is the first cruise ship ever to have (and so many of them) "studios". All solo cruise cabins are bookable with single occupancy rates.

NCL Epic refurbishment 2015 review

Follows the list of deckplan changes after ship's drydock 2015 refurbishment (September 27 to October 17) done at Damen Shipyard Brest (France) .

A new club lounge was opened under the name “The Cavern Club”. The venue is via a partnership with the original British club’s owners. It offers music inspired by "The Beatles" (live performances by international musicians).

New evening entertainment options are also introduced at the ship’s theatre (deck 5). Among those are the musical “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” and the Broadway-style dance show “Burn the Floor”.

“Burn The Floor” show is also offered on the NCL newest ships Breakaway and Getaway. It is a ballroom dancing type of theatrical entertainment, with 14 professional dancers and 2 singers performing together with a live band.

“Priscilla Queen Of The Desert” show is a musical type of comedy entertainment. The spectacle features numerous costumes, head-dresses and dancing classics, such as “It’s Raining Men”, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, etc.

Extensive restaurant renovations were done to the Moderno Churrascaria (Brazilian steakhouse), Cagney’s (steakhouse), La Cucina (Italian), Le Bistro (French), Taste (dining room), Manhattan (dining room), Garden Cafe (buffet). Dining venues enhancements include new carpeting and decors, and their furniture was reupholstered.

Major renovations were done to the Mandara Spa (deck 14), Bliss Ultra Lounge (promenade deck 7), Marketplace (lido deck 15), Epic Theater (deck 5), Casino (deck 6). The Haven Suite exclusive complex (decks 16-17) was updated with new furniture, lighting, wall covering, artworks.

The list of new (redesigned) facilities includes a photo gallery (deck 5), library (deck 7), card room (deck 7) and the new SplashGolf (kids mini-golf course). The SplashGolf is a retrofit to the ship's existing splash pad (part of the Aqua Park area). It is located under the waterslides on pool deck 15 and combines 2 water fun attractions (splash pad and miniature golf) into one interactive water play facility for toddlers and small kids. Epic's SplashGolf was designed by Adventure Golf Services (a company specializing in the design and construction of mini-golf courses). Instead of traditional solid mini golf balls, SplalshGolf's balls are larger and floating. Hole cups are also larger.

Among the technical entertainments and upgrades are the 2 new rudders (by Becker), new propeller caps, hull repainting (robot UHP blasting technology, new type silicone paint improving fuel efficiency). General maintenance works affected the release systems of all service boats (lifeboats, tenders), thrusters, stabilizers, diesel generator exchange, cooling water connections, the cabin air-conditioning system.

Our First Time Aboard Norwegian Epic Mediterranean Cruise

It took a long time to convince my husband to try a new way of travelling, but I think he’s finally hooked. We have done our research, read blogs, Norwegian Epic reviews and got some advice from expert cruisers. We finally decided that the Norwegian Epic cruise was the best cruise for us. When choosing a cruise we first looked at where we wanted to go.

An NLC Mediterranean cruise was always on my bucket list, and with some amazing ports of call – we knew we had to book the Norwegian Epic Mediterranean Cruise, one of the best Mediterranean cruise lines.

History Of NCL Epic

The Norwegian Epic was built in 2010 and was the 3rd-largest cruise ship in the world when it was built! With 4200 passengers and 1750 crew, it’s also the equivalent of a 16-story high building and has its own towering water slides on the top deck! The ship was refurbished in 2015.

We thought a cruise ship on the Western Mediterranean would leave us claustrophobic, with nowhere to go. This could not be further from the truth. There is so much to see and do on the ship that you may not even get a chance to see everything!

Checking in with Norwegian Epic

We arrived at the Barcelona cruise port to check-in for our cruise. Check-in on the NCL Epic is similar to an airline check-in apart from getting your photo taken. We were issued a room key card which was also used for all purchases on board the cruise ship and was our ID card.

We had a misconception that it would take hours to check-in on a cruise ship. There were lineups but they moved quickly.

Norwegian Epic Rooms

When booking a room on your Norwegian Epic cruise of course you have many choices. I always pictured cruise staterooms to be extremely small. We were lucky to stay in a mid-ship balcony stateroom that features floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to a private balcony.

This room can accommodate up to three people with two lower beds that convert into a queen-sized bed, and a sitting area that converts to additional bedding to accommodate one more passenger. We were so surprised how spacious our room was.

It had a closet and several compartments for storage. Our room had a unique bathroom layout where every area is separate, including the shower and vanity sink. It’s a great layout, as my husband and I didn’t have to battle it out in the bathroom for space.

Our room was also equipped with a small coffee maker, great for that quick cup of java when you first wake up and a mini-bar fridge. (Careful, the items in the mini-bar fridge are usually not included in your cruise rate and are usually an additional charge).

No need to pack the basics as the shower is equipped with a wall dispenser with body wash and moisturizing shampoo as well as a hairdryer, leaving more space in your luggage for souvenirs. We were located on deck 14 mid-ship, the perfect location as we were one floor below the Garden Cafe.

If you are looking to add a bit of luxury on your cruise, you can always opt for the luxurious Haven Suites. They have penthouse suites with balconies, the deluxe owner’s Haven Suite with a separate bedroom, living room and dining room, or the two-bedroom family villa with balcony.

If you book a Haven Suite you get to use the Concierge Lounge and private restaurant and bar as well as butler and concierge services……sweet!!

We were really surprised to hear that they offer studios for solo travelers as well as their own lounge. This is great for solo travelers, no more single supplementary charges.

NCL Epic Deck Plans

The Norwegian Epic has 19 decks…….pretty much the size of a building! The rooms are located on decks 8 – 17. There was so much to explore on this ship and we definitely got our workout in everyday exploring. It’s important to know what is located on each deck as you can decide how close you want your stateroom to be to all the action or how far away.

Also, because there is so much to explore you don’t want to miss anything…….trust me, if you don’t know about it you probably won’t find it on your NLC Mediterranean cruise.

Norweigan Cruiseline Freestyle Dining

My husband and I always heard stories of friends who have been on other cruises and they had set times for dinner every night in the same restaurant. We did not like the idea of a set time to eat dinner. We wanted to have the option to eat when and where we wanted.

Norwegian Cruise lines offer freestyle dining. There are no fixed dining times or pre-assigned seating giving us the freedom on our vacation to try different places to eat on board and experience all of the dining options.

Norwegian Epic Restaurants

The food! We really had no idea what we were missing. We always thought that cruise ship dining was all about the long lineups and mediocre food. NCL is known for amazing dining and has over 20 different dining options on board but we had no idea that NCL Epic would be a foodie heaven.

All the restaurants were amazing, yes even the buffet! The cruise fare includes two main dining rooms where you can order from a menu (they change nightly), a self-serve buffet that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a variety of casual cafes, grills and on-the-go choices.

In addition to all of the complimentary dining options available, Norwegian Epic also offers dining at specialty restaurants. For a cover charge, you can experience a world of different cuisines and atmosphere – from the finest French Bistro at sea to casual authentic Italian dishes served in a Trattoria-style setting to the first at sea Brazilian Churrasqueira.

We tried to enjoy as many of the restaurants as possible.

Garden Café Deck 15

The Garden Cafe is a buffet restaurant, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner with wonderful views. They have different themes every night so you are never eating the same meal again unless you want to. We loved the freshly prepared made-to-order omelets in the morning.

Great Outdoors Deck 15

The Great Outdoors is located just outside of the Garden Cafe but located outdoors to enjoy the fresh ocean air and a view of the Aqua Park This is a buffet that is open during breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Taste Deck 5

One of the twin inclusive al-a-carte restaurants we dined at was Taste restaurant that serves contemporary cuisine, with menus changing daily. This was a great restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The Manhattan Room Deck 6

We enjoyed dinner at another inclusive restaurant, the Manhattan Room. The ambiance is like we were in a private New York City supper club with panoramic ocean views from the two-story, floor-to-ceiling windows. There was also nightly entertainment.

O’Sheehans Deck 6

O’Sheehans is open 24 hours a day! They have some great Irish pub classics as well as popular draft beers. We enjoyed some of the popular comfort food menu items such as Prime Rib and All-You-Can-Eat Ribs. You can also enjoy a game of pool, or relax while taking in a sports game.

La Cucina Deck 14

At La Cucina, we enjoyed fine Italian dining with spectacular ocean views. They offered some great Italian classics such as pasta carbonara and lobster fettuccine. This was one of the specialty dining à la carte restaurants with a cover charge.

We were looking forward to a steak dinner at the popular Cagney’s Steak House. This restaurant has a selection of premium choice cuts of Angus beef perfectly prepared and we also wanted to try their famous Parmesan truffle fries. This was definitely one of our favorite restaurants on the ship.

Moderno Churrascaria Deck 7

We loved the unique experience at the authentic Brazilian steakhouse. We started with the large impressive salad bar. Honestly, I was pretty full after the salad bar so I would highly recommend pacing yourself, as you need to save room for the skewers of slow-roasted meats carved tableside by the Pasadores and of course the side dishes.

Atrium Café & Bar Deck 5

The Atrium was our go-to for pre-dinner cocktails and people watching. It is a grand space that offers three-deck vertical views and a two-story tv screen.

Norwegian Epic Award-Winning Entertainment

Norwegian Cruise lines are known for their award-winning entertainment. We were expecting the usual cheesy entertainment you would get while staying at an all-inclusive resort – but boy, were we wrong! You can’t miss the entertainment, it will blow you away.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical (Complimentary)

This international hit sensation is based on the smash-hit movie. PRISCILLA is the heart-warming, uplifting adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship and end up finding more than they could have ever dreamed of.

With a dazzling array of outrageous Tony and Oscar Award-winning costumes and a hit parade of dance-floor favorites.

Burn the Floor (Complimentary)

Burn the Floor sizzles onboard Norwegian Epic! An international championship cast shows off their best ballroom dance moves with plenty of European flair. From Grand Viennese waltzes to the sensual Tango and provocative Rumba, experience all their passion as they heat up the stage.

The dancers were so amazing and really make this one of the best Norwegian Epic activities.

Cirque Dreams Epicurean (additional fee)

We did not see the Cirque Dreams Epicurean show and now I’m kicking myself. I have heard so many wonderful things about it and will definitely opt to see this show next time. This dinner theater takes places in the SpiegelTent, a custom-designed venue that resembles a circus tent.

A three-course dinner is served prior to the main show. The NCL website describes the show as “An Avant-garde world of awe-inspiring feats and colorful eccentricities awaits your discovery in this captivating show.”

Norwegian Epic Activities

We thought a full day at sea meant we were going to be so bored… what can we possibly do? Boy, was I wrong.

Norwegian Epic has enough onboard activities to fill every minute of your cruise. The best thing is that you can do as little or as much as you want. Every night at turndown service, a newsletter is delivered to the room with a timetable of activities for the next day……for every hour of the day!! There is an Aqua Park with a 200-foot slide, the only bowl slide at sea.

There is also Spice H20, an adults-only beach club at the back of the ship. If you are really looking for some pampering then you can even book a session at the Mandara Spa. There really is something for everyone.

Suit up and splash down at the first ever Aqua Park. There are two pools, five hot tubs, a kid’s pool, three multi-story water slides including the 200-foot Epic Plunge.

Bliss Ultra Lounge – Bowling Alley

During the day, all ages are welcome to bowl. At night, guests 18 and older enjoy funky lighting that illuminates the neon-colored bowling balls and decor to create an atmosphere that is full of energy.

Pulse Fitness Centre

Enjoy working out on vacation? Visit the Pulse fitness center with great workout equipment including treadmills, ellipticals, and free weights or even yoga, pilates and spinning. We walked through and couldn’t believe how many people were in the fitness center…….love the dedication.

The Epic Casino

Try your luck at the largest, elegant, full-action casino that offers high-roller ambiance. They offer poker, blackjack, roulette, craps and hundreds of slot machines.

Sports Complex

The Sports Complex has two decks to play on with a full-sized basketball court, rock climbing wall, the first-ever rappelling wall at sea and a 24-foot enclosed climbing cage.

Soak up the sun by day around the pool and enjoy the outdoor buffet at the adults-only Ibiza-inspired beach club at the back of the ship. The entertainment is non-stop, as the pool floor rises to become a dance floor at night.

Let’s not forget about the Norwegian Epic itinerary! Where else can you enjoy 6 dream destinations in one week without having to pack and unpack? It was refreshing to visit a new destination every morning, without having to pack up all of our belongings!

It was wonderful to leave and explore for the day and be able to return to the ship and relax in our state-room. The Norwegian Epic itinerary had all the stops we were looking for on a Western Mediterranean cruise that included some dream destinations. Day Two: At Sea

Catching sunlight and lazing on the NCL deck is one of the most fun things to do during this cruise!

Day Three: Naples, Italy

On day three, we docked in Naples and took a shore excursion out to Sorrento and Positano . It has always been a dream to visit this stunning coast – and it was beautiful! I would highly recommend stopping in Positano on your day trip as this is probably one of the best Amalfi towns to visit.

Day Four: Civitavecchia, Italy

Day four, we docked in Rome. We took a guided excursion in Roma visiting landmarks, having lunch and trying the famous cacio e pepe pasta and touring the Coliseum. Although you may be limited on time, here are some great places to eat while in Rome.

Day Five: Livorno, Italy

From Livorno we traveled through the very scenic Tuscany region for our tour to our dream destination Cinque Terre (five villages). Our first stop to Vernazza was so colorful and cozy. Then to Riomaggiore which was so spectacular and so memorable. The Cinque Terre beaches are so beautiful. This is definitely a dream destination.

Day Six: Cannes, France

We strolled through the playground of the rich and famous, Cannes then onto a short train ride to visit one of our favorite cities in Europe, Monte Carlo. This city is incredibly scenic and easy to get around, with one city bus circling the entire center core.

Day Seven: Palma de Mallorca, Spain

One short bus ride from this port and we were walking to the historic old town. This city, more than any other port of call on our 7 day Mediterranean cruise, was such a pleasant surprise because we didn’t know much about it.

As the name implies, the entire area is gifted with majestic palm trees and the most charming narrow streets lined with amazing cafes, restaurants, and shops. It is also one of the best destinations for winter sun in Europe .

Day Eight: Barcelona

Finally, we got off at the Norwegian Epic Barcelona dock. I can’t believe we waited this long to experience our first-time cruise. It really is a wonderful way to travel and see so many different destinations as well as enjoying all the wonderful amenities available on the ship. This is one of our favorite Norweigan cruises !

Some of these amenities you won’t even be able to find at a resort, making this a truly epic cruise. The gourmet dining really was a highlight for us. It didn’t matter where you dined, the food was amazing and the service outstanding!

Throughout our cruise, we were so surprised at the level of service from all the staff. Everyone was so friendly and always smiling. We are most definitely cruising with Norwegian Cruise lines again and can’t wait to bring our daughters with us.

Been on 11 cruises with Norwegian...but have the memories of being on the Epic to be nothing but epic!!!!!! IF I HAD NEVER GOTTEN OFF THE SHIP, I WOULD STILL BE CONTENT!!!!! Combination of the live shows, Pricilla Queen performance ( ultimate by far) and people that l had met will last a lifetime!! Enjoyed it so much that when l returned home l booked it again 6 months later for a transatlantic crossing!!!!! And can you believe l went solo each time!!! Definitely going to do it again

Rome/Civitavecchia

Located about 80 kilometers northwest of Rome, the Port of Civitavecchia is the port of Rome and a busy ferry and cargo port serving Italy and southern Europe. Lying on Italy’s eastern shores on the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Port of Civitavecchia has excellent direct connections to Rome. It is an important cruise and ferry port with regular passage to Sardinia, Malta, Sicily, Tunis, and Barcelona. Fishing is of secondary importance to the Port of Civitavecchia. In addition to ocean-going traffic, the Port of Civitavecchia also contains a thermoelectric center and metallurgical works. In 2006, over 51 thousand people called the Port of Civitavecchia home. The Port of Civitavecchia was built on an earlier Etruscan settlement. Emperor Trajan founded the Port of Civitavecchia in the early 2nd Century, calling it Centumcellae. Today, Trajan’s Port is preserved within today’s Port of Civitavecchia. A busy growing town during the late Roman era, the Port of Civitavecchia was attacked by Vandals and then destroyed by the Saracens in 828 AD. Residents escaped to the nearby Allumiere Mountains where Pope Leo IV built a walled town in 854. Eventually, the people returned to Civitavecchia (the name means “old city”). At the end of the 15th Century, the Port of Civitavecchia was under frequent attack by pirates. The naval arsenal was constructed in 1508. Pope Paul III commissioned the building of the keep, which was designed by Donato Bramante and then finished by Michelangelo in 1537, to protect the Port of Civitavecchia from the pirate attacks. In 1696, Civitavecchia became a free port under Pope Innocent XII. Because it was Rome’s main port, the French occupied the Port of Civitavecchia in 1849. The Port of Civitavecchia was linked to Rome by the Rome and Civitavecchia Rail Road in 1859. When the Port of Civitavecchia became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1870, it was one of the Papal State’s most strongly-fortified towns when Papal troops welcomed General Nino Bixio on behalf of the Italian unification forces into the Port of Civitavecchia fortress. World War II brought destruction to as much as three-quarters of the Port of Civitavecchia. Reconstruction enlarged the Port of Civitavecchia beyond its pre-war area. The Autorita Portuale Civitavecchia (Port of Rome) is responsible for managing and operating the Port of Civitavecchia as well as the ports of Fiumicino and Gaeta. The modern Port of Civitavecchia is at the center of rail, road, and air networks that link it with central Italy and the world. The Port of Civitavecchia has capacity to handle about 11 million tons of cargo per year and over 1.5 million passengers. Cargoes include forest products, cereals, iron and steel, chemicals, automobiles, containers, and liquid bulk. In 2007, the Port of Civitavecchia welcomed 856 cruise vessels carrying 1.6 million passengers, and the total number of passengers using ferries and cruise vessels was 3.8 million. In 2007, the Port of Civitavecchia handled a total of 7.7 million tons of cargo. This total included 1.5 million tons of liquid bulk, 1.7 million tons of solid bulk, 4.6 million tons of packages, and 31.1 thousand TEUs of containerized cargo. The Port of Civitavecchia contains 28 berths of a total 5.6 thousand meters in length with alongside depths from 6 to 18 meters. Port properties include five warehouses containing 36 thousand square meters for handling and storing cargoes. The intermodal terminal includes seven thousand square meters of storage space and 12.5 thousand square meters for loading/unloading rail cars and parking. The Port of Civitavecchia is one of the busiest ferry ports in the world. Just 80 kilometers northwest of Rome, it is the main tourist destination for people traveling to the Eternal City. It is also a central port for ferries carrying passengers to more local destinations. The ferry terminal offers a complete line of amenities. Different ferry companies offer services to the various destinations. Moby Lines handles crossings to Olbia, Sardinia. Corsica Sardinia Ferries runs services to Golfo Aranci. Grimaldi Ferries carries passengers to Barcelona and Tunis, and Grand Navi Veloci operates a route to Tunis. Ferrovie dello Stato operates a combined rail-ferry service to Golfo Aranci.

Thira/Santorini

Fira is a comparatively modern town, with houses built mostly during the 19th century when the old Venetian capital at Skaros became untenable due to earthquakes. The architecture is a jumble of Cycladic and Venetian, side by side, the similarities between the two being the stark whiteness. The impact of Aegean tourism has made itself felt in Fira, judging from the abundance of taverns, hotels, discotheques and shops. It is the largest town on the island and has gained preference with travelers because it is central and access to other parts of Santorini is made easy by either taxi or bus. From there you can indulge in some inspiring coastal walks. Wandering through the white cobbled streets of Fira, a town of about 2,000 inhabitants, one gets the feel of the old-world charm blended in with the modern day comforts. The town's archaeological museum is crammed with finds from excavations at Akrotiri. But besides being so interesting archaeologically, Santorini is essentially a beauty spot, an island whose cliffs seem to glow under an exceptionally clear light all day, but which at sunset glow redly, evoking that vast explosion more than 3000 years ago.

Athens/Piraeus

Today Piraeus is the home base of Greek shipping, the largest commercial fleet in the world, apace bound to the sea like few others. The harbours of Zea and Mikrolimano as well as Phaliro play host to countless yachts and sailing craft throughout the year. Piraeus was known in medieval times as Porto Leone, a name due to the enormous stone lion, which guarded the port's entrance. Today, the life of Piraeus is centred on its three ports: the main, central one and those of Zea and Mikrolimano. You can walk around the central harbour, shared by cargo and passenger ships alike, and watch the constant comings and goings of goods and people from around the world. Having completed your tour of the central harbour of Piraeus you will then head south traversing the peninsula and arrive at Peiraiki, one of the most picturesque neighbour hoods in the city. Here one finds the harbour of Zea, one of the largest marinas in the Mediterranean. If the night finds you in the area, you can try one of the many bars found nearby. You can continue your tour along the waterfront heading towards Kastella but a small deviation toward the city centre will be useful for then you can visit the verdant square of the municipal Theatre with cafeterias and shops of all kinds surrounding it. The magnificent building housing the Municipal Theatre as well as the Town Hall and the Library complete the picture presented by the main square in the city. Piraeus's little natural harbours are among its busiest and most touristy areas: Mikrolimano, Passalimani, Zea, Freatida and Hatzikiriakio. Countless seaside tavernas provide delicious seafood washed down with the uniquely Greek drink, ouzo. The fresh smell of the sea and the sounds made by the assortment of caiques, yachts and sailing ships, which are moored next to the tables, complete the enjoyment of the food Beyond the port, the most impressive spots are the hills of Profitis Ilias and Kastela with their neoclassical mansions and modern buildings which look as they are hanging over the sea.

Mykonos is world-famous. It is no coincidence that this, the most cosmopolitan of all Greek islands, attracts so many visitors from all over the globe, including large numbers of artists and intellectuals. Here, the steep mountains to be encountered in most of the Cyclades give way to low, rocky hills which combine with superb beaches to make up the landscape of the island. The capital, Hora (Chora), with its colourful harbour in which little fishingboats nestle happily side by side with luxury yachts, presents quite a different picture from the majority of Aegean island towns. While it is usual for island villages to be built on naturally amphitheatrical sites, Mykonos is spread out over a flat area and conveys an impression of lid aesthetic cohesion. Along the whitewashed streets stand brilliant white box-shaped houses with stepped walls for sitting on, wooden doors and windows and brightly-coloured balconies. These are interspersed with small but impressive churches, pretty little tavernas and shops selling souvenirs and other goods, and the overall sense is of being inside a film set. On the low Kastro hill is the complex of churches known collectively as Our Lady 'Paraportiani', a superb arrangement of whitewashed masses created over the centuries and now recognised as a national cultural monument. Of particular historical and aesthetic interest are the medieval houses in this district of the town, which stand like a wall above the sea protecting the west side of Hora. The Archaeological Museum of Hora contains finds from tombs on the nearby island of Rhenia, sculptures, vases and figurines. The Folklore Museum brings together a number of collections of furniture, icons, pieces of sculpture and folk musical instruments. Mykonos is also the home of the Nautical Museum of the Aegean, which has interest all of its own. The countryside of Mykonos is a mixture of grey-green rocks ringed by prickly pear plants and little fertile areas carpeted with wild flowers. Here and there are tiny whitewashed chapels and windmills. Ano Mera is, after Hora, the most important of the older villages on the island. Standing 8 km. to the east of the town, Ano Mera has the interesting monastery of Our Lady Tourliani, ornamented with fine wood-carvings. The church has a collection of valuable ecclesiastical vessels, vestments and embroideries. The courtyard contains an interesting bell-tower and a marble fountain. Here lovers of the sea will find outstanding golden beaches such as Agios Stefanos, Psarou, Kalafatis, Platis Gialos, Ornos, Elia and Panormos. Miykonos is a busy island with all the amenities of a modern resort and with plenty to do - by day or night for those who want to have a lively time. Yet visitors fond of more peaceful holidays will still find quiet corners in which to relax.

Corfu Town (Kerkyra) is a principal port and the largest town in the Ionian islands. It is built between two Venetian castles, having its own unique atmosphere. It is a thriving mass of shops and businesses, set amongst a captivating and charming assortment of elegant buildings, churches, imposing fortresses and narrow alleyways leading to hidden squares. The tall buildings with the 'volta' (arches), the 'cantounia' (narrow flagstoned streets), the 'mouragia' (sea-walls) are showing all a clear Italian influence. One of the most beautiful walks in the town is around the Esplanade (Spianada square), one of the biggest squares in Europe which is the hub of the Corfiot's life. Here you can walk around or sit in one of the many cafe bars underneath the arches of the 'Liston', a name probably derived from a similar promenade in Venice. Liston was built during the imperial French occupation and is reminiscent of the larger 'Arcades' of the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. On the upper side of Esplanade stands a memorial to the British Lord High Commissioner Sir Thomas Maitland, built in 1816 in the shape of a circular building with Ionian columns. The Corfiots call this building 'sterna' (cistern) because this was where the entrance to the largest underground cistern of the town was to be found. Near the Maitland's monument, in front of the building where the Ionian Academy was housed, stands the statue of John Capodistrias, the first President of Greece. It is a work from the end of the 19th century showing the Governor standing deep in thought. Opposite the Liston is the the Old Fortress and 'Anthonas', the Municipal Gardens. In the gardens is the statue of Lord Guilford, showing the founder of the Ionian Academy in his academic robes holding an open book. Nearby are the busts of two famous Corfiots, the poet Lorenzo Mavilis and the writer Dinos Theotokis. At the northern end of Esplanade stands the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, one of the most elegant buildings in Corfu. Opposite the west front of the palace is a beautiful building which now houses the Reading Society of Corfu, the oldest cultural institute in modern Greece, founded in 1836. The Reading Society contains a unique library of Greek and foreign books as well as a large collection of manuscripts, newspapers, periodicals, paintings, maps and engravings mostly related to the Ionian islands. As one's gaze leaves the Esplanade, after lingering on the palace, it embraces a magnificent view towards the coastal road (Arseniou Street) with its sea-walls. Following along this road will take you to the Old Harbour of Corfu and the other Venetian castle, the one called the New Fortress. Along this road the narrow lanes ('cantounia') lead to the Campielo, the oldest quarter of the town. Here the visitor can find the oldest houses and many of the historic churches in Corfu. At the northern end of Capodistria Street stands the Capodistria Mansion, an excellent example of neo-classical architecture. It was built in 1835 by the Corfiot architect John Chronis and is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Greece. Here John Capodistrias, the first President of Greece, was born. Another notable landmark in the old town is the central market. The most interesting street here is Nickiforou Theotoki as the rows upon rows of 'volta' standing on their stone columns and the tall buildings form one of the most characteristic aspects of Corfu Town. In a little square on Nickiforou Theotoki Street stands the building of the Ionian Bank, which was built in 1846 displaying a well-proportioned facade with finely detailed Ionian pilasters and pediment. On the first floor of the building the Paper Money Museum is housed. At the far end of the square is the Church of St. Spyridon. It shelters the body of St. Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu and one of the great Saints of Greek Orthodoxy and draws a constant stream of pilgrims from all over Greece every year. On the Evgeniou Voulgareos Street stands the crenellated belfry of the Roman Catholic Church of the Annunciation a venerable building from the end of the 14th century. The whole building was destroyed in the World War II bombing, and the only remains are the belfry, two inscriptions and a bas-relief representing war trophies. Between Evgeniou Voulgareos Street and a modern square stands the most elegant of the Venetian buildings in Corfu, the Town Hall in baroque style. At the end of Moustoxydi Street stands another building of the period of British rule, the historic the Ionian Parliament. At the junction of the Garitsa coastal road and Alexandras Avenue stands the Douglas Obelisk, which also belongs to the same period, erected in honour of the Lord High Commissioner Sir Howard Douglas, to whom Corfu owes a lot of public works and philanthropic institutions.

If you've ever wondered what sort of prize you'd get for saving Europe, look no further than Valletta. Named after La Valette, the Grandmaster who masterminded Malta's successful stand against the Turkish siege of 1565, Valletta became the city of the Knights of the Order of St John and the seat of Malta's government. While travelling through the Mediterranean, Sir Walter Scott described Valletta as 'the city built by gentlemen for gentlemen'. Today it's a beautifully preserved 16th-century walled city, small enough to cover in a few hours without sweating too much in the Mediterranean sun. In fact, the streets were carefully laid out to channel cool breezes in from the harbour. Situated on the northeast coast of Malta, Valletta is the capital, and is built on the promontory of Mount Sciberras which juts out into the middle of a bay. This dissects the bay into two deep harbours: the Grand Harbour to the east and the Marsamxett to the west. Valletta is a rough rectangle at the tip of a peninsula on the coast, just a few hundred metres across in either direction and thus surrounded by water on its northern, eastern and southern sides. The city was named after Jean Parisot de la Valette who was the Grand Master of the Order of the Knight Hospitallers (Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem). This famed religious order of hospitallers was founded in Jerusalem in the 11th century and made their base in Malta after they were expelled from Rhodes by the Ottoman Turks. During the time of Grand Master La Valette, in 1565, the Knights and the Maltese managed to suppress a siege on the island by the forces of Süleyman the Magnificent, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in what was to become known as one of history's greatest sieges. Following the siege, the building of the city began in the same year 1565 in order to create a base for the defence of the island. Although Grand Master La Valette managed to lay the first stone, he died before its completion. Most of the embellishments of Valletta were done during the time of Grand Master La Cassiere, especially the magnificent St John's Co-Cathedral. The reign of the Knights of St John eventually came to an end with the successful invasion by Napoleon who occupied Malta on his way to Egypt. A Maltese revolt against the French garrison was the catalyst for the occupation of Valletta by the British in 1800. Valetta is also the spot where the Italian fleet surrendered to the Allies in 1943. Valletta's network of streets is laid out in an orthogonal grid dominated by a main artery which crosses the length of the entire city and opens up into a series of squares at its geometric centre, around the Palace of the Grand Masters. The city architecture is inspired by Italian Renaissance planning principles, and served as an early model of urban design. Valletta is one of the most important planned towns of the Renaissance. It equals in its noble architecture, any capital in Europe, while its timeless beauty and artistic treasures make it a well-deserved World Heritage site. There are a number of superb museums here as well as historical sites that are worth visiting. The main thoroughfare in the city is Republic Street. You'll find all the main shops and character-filled side streets leading off from here. For those interested in shopping, Merchant's Street and Lucia Street are the places to go for the most interesting merchandise. Lucia Street is famous for the exquisite silver and gold filigree jewellery sold there. Merchant Street specializes in souvenirs and is also home to a large open market.

Messina is a harbor city in northeast Sicily, separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina. It’s known for the Norman Messina Cathedral, with its Gothic portal, 15th-century windows and an astronomical clock on the bell tower. Nearby are marble fountains decorated with mythological figures, like the Fontana di Orione, with its carved inscriptions, and the Neptune Fountain, topped by a statue of the sea god.

Naples, a city in southern Italy, sits on the Bay of Naples. Nearby is Mount Vesuvius, the still-active volcano that destroyed nearby Roman town Pompeii. Dating to the 2nd millennium B.C., Naples has centuries of important art and architecture. The city's cathedral, the Duomo di San Gennaro, is filled with frescoes. Other major landmarks include the lavish Royal Palace and Castel Nuovo, a 13th-century castle.

Livorno is situated along the coast of the Ligurian Sea, is one of Italy’s most important ports, both as a commercial and touristic port of call, an industrial centre of national importance and, among all of the Tuscan cities, it is generally considered the youngest, even though its territory holds historical testimonies of remote times that have survived the mass bombings of the Second War World. The city, developed from the end of the XVI century upon request of the Medici family, is famous for being the birthplace of prestigious personalities such as Amedeo Modigliani, Pietro Mascagni and Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. In the past, until the first years of the 20th century it was also a tourist destination of international importance for the presence of important seaside and thermal establishments, that give the city its the name of Montecatini-on-the-sea. Livorno, which at the end of the XIX century counted around 100,000 inhabitants and was the 11th most populated city in Italy and the 2nd in Tuscany, in the last decades has had a notable decline in the number of inhabitants and now is the 3rd most populated city in Tuscany after Florence and Prato.

Norwegian Cruise Line food: The ultimate cruise guide to restaurants and dining on board

Norwegian Cruise Line has always been a bit of a rebel when it comes to food.

Back in 2000, the company introduced the concept of Freestyle Cruising, and with it, the idea of Freestyle Dining. Guests no longer were assigned to traditional early or late dinner seatings in the main dining rooms on Norwegian Cruise Line 's ships, but rather could decide when they wanted to eat and with whom.

The cruise line also began to roll out specialty restaurants — smaller, cuisine-specific dining venues such as the French-themed Le Bistro and Cagney's Steakhouse — that passengers could reserve for an additional cover charge.

Today, passengers will find more than three dozen dining options, including 21 that require a cover charge or feature a la carte pricing, on board NCL's 17 ships. While the cruise fare covers a number of restaurants, specialty restaurants requiring an extra charge are popular, and new specialty restaurants are introduced with each class of ship.

The onboard restaurant lineup also varies by ship, with those in the Prima, Breakaway and Breakaway Plus classes having a larger selection than the line's older, smaller ships.

How do you make sense of it all? We've compiled a rundown of all the Norwegian Cruise Line food options, from coffee and gelato shops to a la carte restaurants where the tab can easily top $150 for two. Here's what's included, what you'll pay extra for and the ships that feature each dining venue.

American Diner

Included; lunch and dinner

This 1950s-inspired diner featured on all six ships in NCL's Breakaway and Breakaway Plus classes offers quintessential midcentury comfort foods — from cheeseburgers and meatloaf to chicken pot pie and spaghetti and meatballs. Desserts include bread pudding and carrot walnut cake. The food is now all free (Norwegian made this change in early 2024), but if you want to wash it down with a milkshake, you'll need to pay up.

Atrium Cafe

A la carte; coffee and snacks

Atrium Cafe is a coffee and cocktail bar that serves hot and cold beverages along with a selection of cookies, pastries and other snacks. Alternately, some NCL ships feature Starbucks cafes.

Cadillac Diner

You'll have to head to Hawaii to enjoy the barbecue pulled pork sliders, pretzel bites, Reuben sandwiches and more served up retro-style in the Cadillac Diner. This venue, with its funky black-and-white checkered floor and vinyl booths wedged between two sections of a vintage red sedan, is found exclusively on Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America. It's open 24 hours a day, and everything is complimentary except for the milkshakes.

Cagney's Steakhouse

One of NCL's most popular specialty restaurants, Cagney's features a classic steakhouse menu with plenty of options for seafood lovers as well. The stars are the cuts of aged certified Angus beef (rib-eye, filet mignon, porterhouse and New York strip) with a choice of sauces and side dishes such as truffle mashed potatoes and sauteed garlic mushrooms. Other options include cedar-plank steelhead trout and double-cut Australian lamb chops. Save room for the OMG Caramel-Butterscotch Cheesecake.

Chinese restaurant

If you're craving shrimp dumplings or a bowl of stir-fried noodles with beef, a number of older Norwegian Cruise Line ships feature a complimentary Chinese restaurant where you can get your fix. Names vary by ship — you'll find Bamboo on Dawn, Shanghai's on Epic, Orchid Garden on Gem, Jasmine Garden on Jade, Chin Chin on Jewel, Lotus Garden on Pearl, Silk on Spirit, Ginza on Star and East Meets West on Pride of America — but the menus are similar.

Food Republic

This globally inspired specialty restaurant with an Asian-Latin fusion theme remains popular almost a decade after its debut on Norwegian Escape. You'll want to order multiple dishes to share family-style from Food Republic 's menu sections: Sushi Bar (eight different rolls), Hand Helds (everything from pork belly bao buns to kanpachi wonton tacos), Sharing Is Caring (grilled shishito peppers, spicy Korean fried chicken, salt and pepper calamari and more), Noodles/Rice/Soups (shrimp pad thai to Vietnamese Pho Tai) and Sugar Pump (desserts featuring green tea, chocolate and ginger caramel).

Garden Cafe

Sometimes, the buffet is the answer. It's perfect when you get on board the first day and need to grab a quick bite before you explore the ship or when you arrive back after a daylong shore excursion and want to refuel right away without having to change clothes. Garden Cafe offers plenty of options, including carved meats or grilled fish with assorted side dishes, a salad bar, soups, pasta, burgers and fries, and desserts. Most items are precooked and kept warm under heat lamps, so it's not the freshest option, but it's usually packed at breakfast and lunch with guests who like the all-you-can-eat portions.

Cover charge; dinner

This is a slightly more elevated version of NCL's Teppanyaki restaurant. You'll be seated with other guests around a grill, and as you dine on edamame, miso soup and seaweed salad, the chef will prepare your entree (a choice of chicken, beef, seafood or teriyaki-glazed tofu or one of four combinations) with great flair. These fresh-from-the-grill proteins are served with garlic fried rice and grilled vegetables, and the dessert that follows is either a green tea cake or fruit sashimi.

Hudson's

This circular, light-filled space debuted on Norwegian Prima in 2022 as a new main dining room option. It features the same daily rotating menu as the second main dining room, the Commodore Room, but what sets this venue apart is its bright-and-airy ambience, courtesy of 270-degree floor-to-ceiling windows.

Indulge Food Hall

This new casual dining concept, also introduced on Norwegian Prima, quickly became a popular alternative to the Surfside Cafe buffet (see below) for both lunch and dinner; at breakfast, it serves a similar but more limited menu as Surfside. The appeal of Indulge Food Hall is the variety — there are more than four dozen menu items from seven vendors: Tapas, The Garden, Nudls, The Latin Quarter, Q Texas Smokehouse, Seaside Rotisserie and Tamara — served in small-plate portions. You can enjoy chicken korma, pad thai, pulled pork, crispy fried okra, a mushroom tostada and bacon-wrapped medjool dates, all ordered from your table via a tablet.

La Cucina was Norwegian's sole Italian specialty restaurant until the launch of Onda by Scarpetta on Norwegian Encore in 2018, and the two restaurants are quite different. La Cucina is the more traditional, featuring classic Italian favorites — caprese salad, fried calamari, spaghetti carbonara, pizza, chicken cacciatore and osso buco alla Milanese — while Onda's menu focuses on more finessed modern Italian dishes.

Like Cagney's, NCL's French fine-dining restaurant is a longtime favorite that's featured fleetwide (it's called Jefferson's Bistro on Pride of America). Popular with couples for special occasion dinners, Le Bistro features everything from steak tartare and escargot to braised lamb shank and roasted duck breast. Norwegian Cruise Line ships feature at least two main dining rooms, and sometimes even three. Moderno Churrascaria

Carnivores can devour their fill of a variety of meats the traditional Brazilian way as gauchos carve and serve cuts of beef, lamb, pork, sausage and chicken right at the table. Those who prefer to limit their meat intake can fill up instead at the salad bar, which features 43 items. White rice, black beans, sauteed mushrooms, garlic mashed potatoes, fried yucca and Brazilian cheese bread are also served as side dishes.

Another new restaurant to debut on Norwegian Prima, Nama Sushi & Sashimi doesn't veer too far from its name, serving six different sushi rolls (from yellowtail to rock shrimp), three sashimi options and a variety of appetizers, most of which feature raw fish. Even the dessert — pineapple carpaccio — is uncooked.

Ocean Blue is an elegant seafood restaurant featured on NCL's six Breakaway Class and Breakaway Plus Class ships. (It's known as Bayamo by Ocean Blue on Norwegian Escape.) Guests can savor appetizers such as crabcakes, pan-seared scallops and an ahi tuna and avocado tower, followed by steamed or grilled lobster, seafood linguini or simply grilled fish (salmon, tuna, cod or sea bass) served with a choice of sauces. All Ocean Blue restaurants are located on Deck 8 and feature indoor and outdoor seating on The Waterfront.

Onda by Scarpetta

Modern Italian cuisine is the centerpiece of Onda by Scarpetta, another of NCL's elevated specialty dining options and the sister restaurant to land-based Scarpetta. Introduced in 2019 on Norwegian Encore and more recently rolled out on the line's newest ships (plus at least one older vessel), Onda by Scarpetta indulges with antipasti starters such as burrata, short ribs and braised octopus, a half dozen pasta options (including pappardelle Bolognese and Scarpetta's famous spaghetti with tomato and basil) and finally gets around to secondis such as veal Milanese and grilled branzino. Pincho Tapas Bar

This unique Spanish-style tapas bar is found on only one ship in the Breakaway Class and fits in with the ship's overall Miami/Latin-influenced theme. Head to Pinchos if you're looking to enjoy small-plate dishes such as blue crab salad and bacon-wrapped dates, as well as chorizo, calamari, shrimp, scallops and more served a la plancha. Wash it all down with a Spanish red, a glass of sangria or a signature Matador cocktail.

This casual dining venue serves a selection of freshly prepared and wok-fried Asian noodle and rice dishes, from pork pot stickers and steamed vegetable dumplings to Singapore-style rice noodles and udon noodles in broth.

With the debut of Norwegian Prima, NCL evolved its buffet-style restaurant (known as Garden Cafe on most ships) to Surfside Cafe & Grill. The Deck 17 space is notably smaller, though, due to the fact that Prima Class ships also feature Indulge Food Hall and The Local Bar & Grill as complimentary casual dining options. The reduced size does result in some overcrowding, especially at breakfast, with overflow guests directed to find seats in the adjacent Food Republic space.

All but three NCL ships feature Teppanyaki , a Benihana-style Japanese restaurant where the live-action preparation is integral to the experience. You'll be seated around a grill as your chef prepares your entree (either chicken, beef, seafood or teriyaki-glazed tofu or one of four combinations) with dramatic flair. You'll start with miso soup and seaweed salad, and all entrees are served with garlic fried rice and grilled vegetables. Dessert is either a green tea cake or fruit sashimi. Hasuki replaces Teppanyaki on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva.

That said, unless your soul is fueled by pure wanderlust, this itinerary may sound like a lot of cruising, which may explain why Royal Caribbean has divided the journey into four segments. Most of its destinations are clustered around Asia and the Mediterranean, and it skips over Australia. But the Voyage is a rare opportunity to sail up the Amazon River, with visits to inland Brazilian cities most travelers would never think to visit.

Holland America began as a shipping and passenger line in the mid-19th Century, and its history of cruising is nearly as old as the concept. The flagship Zuiderdam is a luxury vessel with a swimming pool and sizable theater. It also boasts several diverse dining areas, including the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse, the Italian-themed Canaletto, and the à la carte Lido Market. Unlike many world cruises, Azamara has divided its full itinerary into segments with clear geographic themes, such as "South Pacific Jewels" and "Mediterranean Icons." These titles can help turn experiences into coherent narratives. For example, "Ancient Pathways" draws a historic and economic line between Mumbai and Athens, along with all ports in between. These themes are coupled with thoughtful excursions, which are often scheduled around local holidays and festivals. "Freighter cruises" have gone by many names over the years, such as "banana boats" and "cargo cruises," but passengers have hitched rides on commercial ships since the dawn of seafaring. These accommodations come in many forms, and you do have to share your vessel with stacks of massive shipping containers; still, you can expect a comfortable cabin and regular meals, along with friendly and respectful crewmembers from around the world. For travelers with a Jack London streak, the freighter cruise feels raw and adventurous.

The Freighter Travel Club was founded in 1958, and companies like Maris Freighter Cruises and Voyage en Cargo have booked passengers on commercial vessels for years. Maris has arranged round-the-world itineraries in the past, and multi-week journeys are common, as enormous loads are floated from one nation to the next. The pandemic took its toll on this niche industry, and most of these journeys do not precisely travel around the world. But when they're in operation, freighter cruises usually cost a little over $100 per day, and savvy travelers have flexibility in their bookings.

Miray Cruises: Life At Sea

Sure, cruising is fun, but what if you want to turn your ship into a semi-permanent address? Life at Sea Cruises promises three years of luxury seafaring, with stops in 140 countries across all seven continents. By the time you're done with these 382 ports, you'll have more photos to sort through and stories to share than most people will amass in a lifetime.

That sounds life-changing, but we'll have to see whether it's too good to be true. Life at Sea is a brand-new enterprise from Miray Cruises, and the maiden voyage has been fraught with delays. However, at the time of this writing, Life at Sea should get underway by the end of 2023, and most full-voyage passengers should already be sailing by 2024. If all goes well, there are four scheduled embarkation options for travelers who want to hop aboard later on, and more will likely be scheduled.

One of the problems has been the ship itself. For a while, the purchase of the ship was in limbo, pushing back the original sail date. However, the MV Lara now seems ready to sail. The medium-sized vessel has space for 1,266 passengers, with a range of cozy cabins, a wellness center, and a pool deck, among many other amenities. Travelers committed to living at sea for three years should get a lot out of their floating home. Life at Sea is a dreamy concept, so let's hope for calm waters once it finally sets sail.
