Paddle Florida: 2023-24 kayak trips explore Florida’s top waterways

By: Author Bonnie Gross

Posted on Last updated: June 6, 2023

One of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors during Florida’s long hot summers is to start planning where you’ll go this winter.

For ideas about paddling trips, you can find inspiration from Paddle Florida , whose Florida kayak tours for 2023-24 were announced recently.

Paddle Florida is a non-profit that supports kayaking and canoeing in Florida by organizing reasonably priced multi-day paddling and camping trips on Florida’s greatest rivers and waterways.

Florida kayak tours: Paddle Florida does the research and planning.

The beauty of these Florida kayak tours is that Paddle Florida staff researches the best locations, arranges all the logistics from camping and meals to musical entertainment around the campfire. The group even shuttles your camping gear between campsites each day, allowing you to travel light and always arrive to a dry tent and sleeping bag. Groups are limited to 100 or, in the case of the Suwanee, 200 people.  These trips are a great option for solo paddlers.

Participants bring their own boats and tents or arrange to rent them (for an extra charge) from affiliated outfitters.

As you read the trip descriptions, you’ll see that some of these trips are beginner-level paddles; on some paddleboards are welcome; for some only sit-inside kayaks are allowed.

Florida kayak tours for the 2022-23 season

  • October 13 – 18, 20 2 3: Suwannee River Wilderness Trail. Some details from Paddle Florida: The trip follows the scenic Suwannee River Wilderness Trail and begins at Madison Blue Spring State Park.  It ends in the town of Branford, after passing many springs ideal for snorkeling and swimming. Here’s a Florida Rambler story on canoe-camping on this Suwanee River Wilderness Trail.
  • October 20-24, 2023 : Santa Fe Springs Celebration . This 48-mile paddle travels one of Florida’s prettiest rivers with dozens of springs.
  • November 12-17, 2023: Fall on the Peace + Fisheating Creek : The trip paddles 50 miles of the Peace River from Fort Meade Recreation Area (between St. Petersburg and Frostproof) to Gardner boat ramp near Arcadia. This is one of the most rural areas of Florida along a river known for its fossils and shark’s teeth. On the last day of the trip, paddlers do an 8-mile run down nearby Fisheating Creek, famous for its pristine scenery and wildlife.
  • January 15-21, 2024: Florida Keys Challenge . While Paddle Florida has run trips in the Keys before, this one has a new format, with a basecamp with cabins and daytrips in various locations around the Keys.
  • February 11-17, 2024: Mangroves, Manatees & More. This new trip explores the Sebastian River and Indian River Lagoon with a paddling itinerary of 46 to 60 miles, depending on the choices of participants.
  • March 13-19, 2024: Springtime on the Chipola This Panhandle trip starts at Florida Caverns State Park. The Chipola River has over 60 freshwater springs, the largest number of any river in Northwest Florida. The Chipola River is a tributary of the Apalachicola River in western Florida.
  • April 5-7, 2024 : Suwannee River Paddling Festiva l. Paddlers camp atop the bluff overlooking two rivers at Suwannee River State Park near Live Oak.  The weekend will offer supported 8-12 mile paddling options on both the Suwannee and Withlacoochee Rivers, a concert featuring Paddle Florida’s favorite musicians, and educational presentations from regional waterway experts.

People who’ve taken these Florida kayak tours before talk about the camaraderie, the convenience and the memorable wilderness experiences.

FUN EVENING ON THE WATER!

This was so much fun! They provide everything you need to have a great time. I went solo and have kayaked many times before. The catfish you feed are everywhere and there is a ton of other wildlife to enjoy along the way to the bridge. There is a phone number you call in to, to be able to hear the guide talk the entire time. I brought my headphones to listen. Its kayaking and you will get wet.

The experience was great! Absolutely 10/10. The guides were fun and had some great commentary and knowledge on the area and sea life. The water was calm and not being in the sun was a big plus for me. Getting to see through the kayak is so fun we got to see so much! If family comes out here again I’d definitely go again! If you’re thinking about booking this let this be the review that tells you DO IT! You won’t regret it. I made memories I’ll carry forever.

This was the best part of our trip! So much fun! Call ahead for reservations, well in advance. We had 5 nights on our trip and I called as soon as we arrived in St. Pete, and they only had an opening on our last night. I was worried since we had little to none kayak experience, but we did fine. The tour guide was excellent. We mainly saw catfish, but we found a few different types of crabs and the tour guide pulled them out for anyone who wanted to hold. Weather was perfect! We highly recommend. It is a must do!

Fun Date! The weather was perfect. The water was very calm and it was a peaceful evening on the water with no mosquitos either. You go slowly enough that you do not need to be in shape to paddle. The people helping you in the kayak are patient and kind and keep you dry. It was so fun to feed the fish and actually touch them when they came to the surface. The bottoms of the boat are not glass, but plastic. You mostly see the fish beside your boat, not underneath, but it was a worthwhile, laid back tour all ages would enjoy!

This is the perfect tour to take for those looking for a romantic date with that special someone near Orlando.

  • Kayak, paddles, life vests
  • An experienced guided tour through the canals
  • Watching the sunset from the water

Kayaking through the canal seeing the fish with the trees over you. The absolute best part was being out on the lake after it rained, the lake was so calm it looked like glass and when the sun started to go down it was reflecting off the water looked amazing.

Florida Clear Kayak Tour- FAQs

Are clear kayak tours worth it.

Yes!  The reason that kayaking with a clear boat is so popular is because kayakers are able to see what’s in the water underneath them.

You’ll have a better opportunity to spot marine life such as manatees, turtles, and fish.

When Are Manatees Active in Florida?

Manatees are most active in Florida between the months of November and April, and the best time to spot them is between December and January!

What Time of Day is Best to See Manatees?

The best time of day to see manatees is in the early morning, as this is when they are the most active.

It’s also recommended to book your tour during the week to avoid being surrounded by crowds during your visit.

Check out the ultimate guide to kayaking with manatees!

What Should I Bring On A Clear Kayak Tour?

All of the tours on this list will provide almost everything you need, but there are a few additional things to pack.

But avoid overpacking, as this might negatively impact your experience as you won’t be able to see through the kayak as well!

Always remember your sunscreen to help protect your skin from the hot Florida sun.

On top of the sunscreen, you’ll also want sunglasses and a sun hat to keep the sun out of your face.  Lastly, bring a water bottle to keep yourself hydrated throughout the tour.

Here are more essentials for your trip!

Never hit the water without your sunscreen.  You’ll want at least SPF 30 to protect from the Florida sun.

Sun Bum Sun Screen

If you’re planning a boat cruise, quick drying beach towels are an essential item to pack.  Unlike regular towels, quick drying beach towels are made from materials that dry quickly, meaning you won’t have to worry about them getting wet and heavy as the day goes on.

Kayak During the Bioluminescence & Comb Jelly Season

Bioluminescent kayaking tours are available from June through September for Dinoflagellates, “Dino” Bio: when the Indian River Lagoon waters are the warmest. Adventure Kayak of Cocoa Beach is located near Orlando and offers kayaking tours that explore the natural bioluminescence of Florida shortly after sunset when there is no full moon.

If you missed the “Dino” bio season, join a comb jelly tour in the fall and winter, or ask us about moonlight paddles offered year-round. Check out Justine Schluntz’s blog on comb jellies from Mexico!

Comb jelly kayak tours are available from mid-October through March. Comb jellies have tentacles just like jellyfish, but theirs are ‘sticky’ instead of ‘stinging’! Comb jellies are NOT jellyfish, but rather thought of as “the spiders of the sea.” Roughly 4 inches in size, Comb Jellies are bioluminescent and safe to touch.

Bioluminescent Kayak Tours in Cocoa Beach

Bioluminescent Kayaking Tours – A Spectacular Adventure

Embark on a spectacular bioluminescence kayaking adventure, and you will slowly begin to see the swirls from your paddles producing a light blue glow in the water that is caused by bioluminescence, living lights in the water. As it gets dark, you will see almost everything in the water, from schools of darting fish to West Indian Manatees and Atlantic Bottle-nose dolphins.

Even the flow of water over the seagrass generates a ghostly bioluminescent radiance! Every movement produces a beautiful blue-green glowing light. As you paddle, you will experience the brilliant wave pattern that forms as the kayaks slice through the water. If you stroke your hand through the water, your skin will be covered with a green flashing glitter. Bioluminescent kayaking is a true one-of-a-kind, ‘must-see’ experience!

Best Kayaking Spots in South Florida: the Keys, Everglades, Gulf Coast & More

R oad tripping through Florida is amazing for so many reasons, one of which is the endless list of kayaking spots in South Florida. Varying from state parks to overlooked rivers, and even subtropical kayaking through mangroves, any skill level paddler can find any number of options for getting on the water in South Florida, and there are even great options for clear kayaking tours if you’re interested.

There are several eco-tourism destinations from Lake Okeechobee to the Florida Keys , providing natural alternatives to the bustling coastal cities. The Great Calusa Blueway and the Marco Island region on the Southwest coast give a wide variety of kayaking choices. Our South-Central region provides several excellent freshwater choices, including two of our favorites, Fisheating Creek and Lake Myakka State Park. The Greater Miami area offers one wild and scenic river and some nice paddling in its numerous parks and preserves. The Everglades, Biscayne and Big Cypress offer a much more natural experience within the bounds of National Parks.

Beside what we’re sharing here, there are hundreds more great places to kayak in South Florida. If you want to share your favorite, please leave a comment or send us a note . We’re always happy to include others’ recommendations and tips!

Easy Kayaking Spots in South Florida

The following spots offer great easy kayaking spots for quick day trips, family outings, or just a more leisurely paddle. Be mindful that most South Florida is known for its hot, humid weather with brutal summers well into the 90s. Winter, while more pleasant, rarely see temperatures below 70 degrees. Moreover, when planning your trip, be mindful of hurricane season, which typically runs from June to November, with September being the peak month.

Indian Key Historic State Park, Florida Keys

While there are an endless number of waterways to choose from in the Florida Keys, Indian Key Historic State Park is a top choice for your visit. A short 20 minutes will get you from Islamorada to a tiny island once the site of a shipwreck salvage business. Common marine life includes dolphins, eagle rays, and manatees. Check out Robbie’s Marina or Backcountry Cowboys for local information and rentals.

Check out this great guide to the Best Places to Kayak in the Florida Keys

Note that while this is a fairly easy option, you’ll need to be sure you’re launching from a smooth waterway, such as the northwest tip of Lower Matecumbe Key. If you head too far north and put in on the narrower channels of the Indian Fill keys, you’ll find a rough current when the tides are at their strongest (mid-tide).

Where to launch:

  • Indian Key Public Boat Ramp
  • Robbies of Islamorada
  • or the Southside Indian Key ramp

The Great Calusa Blueway, Cape Coral

The Great Calusa Blueway is a paddling trail that covers a large area typically divided into three smaller regions. Phase one begins with Estero Bay, characterized by its open waters and spectacular views. The next phase of the trail is Pine Island to Matlacha Pass, home to narrower waters, dense marshland, and the J.N Ding Darling National Refuge. Finishing the trail is the Caloosahatchee River and its tributaries. Beginning paddlers will check out the numerous outfitters located in Phase 2- Pine Island to Matlacha Pass.

This is a SUP friendly paddling area, where the tides and sandbars make for great fun and relaxation, depending on where the water level is at when you’re paddling. This area is just north of Naples and south of Fort Myers, so if you’re planning a trip to Naples and Marco Island, you can easily visit the Great Calusa Blueway for a day.

For more information, visit The Great Calusa Blueway section of Lee County’s website . Maps of each phase can be found on Fort Myers tourism website .

  • Matlacha Community Park

Lake Worth Lagoon, Palm Beach County

Located just outside of Palm Beach, Lake Worth is home to the Snook Islands Natural Area, a protected wetland restoration area complete with a boardwalk, floating dock and kayak launch. Exploring the county’s largest estuary, Lake Worth Lagoon, is best done through local outfitter if you are unfamiliar with the busy nature of the Intracoastal Waterway, Kayak Lake Worth .

There are lots of great things to do in Palm Beach County , including more paddling on the Intracoastal waterway, such as in Jupiter Inlet or Peanut Island. For the best visit, plan two days in the area for some of the prettiest beaches and kayaking in South Florida. This whole area of Palm Beach County is really wonderful for SUP (stand up paddleboarding) as well as being some of the best mellow kayaking in South Florida.

  • Kayak Lake Worth

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Key Largo

Key Largo is located in the backcountry of Florida Bay and Everglades National Park , complete with dolphins, crocodiles and birds. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park gives opportunities for snorkeling, kayaking, SUP and even glass bottom boats to the reef.

The beautiful scenery is great for beginners and is one of the best places to kayak in South Florida, as the area is free of crowds and power boats. Dusenbury Creek provides an excellent opportunity to kayak through the mangrove tunnels. Watch your head as you go through!

Visit Florida Bay Outfitters or  Out There Key Largo Kayak and Fishing Expeditions for kayak tours of the State Park and surrounding area. For more info on John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, visit their website for kayak rental information, as well as expeditions out to the reef for snorkeling.

  • John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

Less-visited Kayaking Spots in South Florida

For experienced paddlers visiting South Florida offers countless multi-day excursions into the backcountry full of wilderness and free of human interference. Whether you’re launching your kayak in the Everglades, Loxahatchee River, Bahia Honda Park or Fisheating Creek, you will have to do some planning and be sure mother nature is in good form to allow a paddle. Timing low tides, seasonal considerations such as mosquitoes and heat, open water conditions, and a myriad of other factors will make or break your next paddle. Be sure to plan accordingly.

Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Naples

Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is a great place for kayakers. It stretches across 110,000 acres of pristine mangrove forest, uplands and protected waters, encompassing nearly half of the Collier County coastline. Birders will want to have their binoculars at hand as the area has excellent birdwatching. If you’re visiting Naples and Marco Island , you can’t NOT visit Rockery Bay!

Kayakers have the opportunity to paddle through beautiful mangrove tunnels, mudflats, and intricate oyster reefs surrounded by wildlife, including sea stars, large snails, birds, dolphins and manatee! However, as much of the area is open water be considerate of wind and tides.

For more information on kayaking in Rookery Bay visit the research reserve site for estuary information or to book kayak rentals or a guided tour.

  • Capri Paddlecraft Park
  • Shell Island Boat Launch

Loxahatchee River in Martin County, Jupiter

The Loxahatchee River is Florida’s first designated Wild and Scenic River (state, not national). This scenic 8.5-mile paddling trail starts at Riverbend Park in Palm Beach County and takes to you Jonathan Dickson State Park in Martin County, designated a Wild and Scenic River.

The canopy of cypress trees gives kayakers a great refuge from the sun, and thank goodness, as you’ll need 5-7 hours to traverse through scenery of wildlife, taking you through freshwater creeks, brackish waters in an estuary, and emptying into the Jupiter Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean.

Book a guided Loxahatchee River kayaking tour here!

Bonus : stop into the Hobe Sound Natural Wildlife Refuge visitor center before or after your kayaking to get up close with local wildlife, including baby alligators, skunks and snakes found in the area.

  • Jonathan Dickinson State Park Hobe Sound
  • Riverbend Park Canoe Launch   Jupiter

Bahia Honda Railroad Bridge, Florida Keys

Bahia Honda State Park is part of the Florida Keys and gives picture-perfect island scenery complete with beautiful sandy beaches teeming with vibrant coral reefs. If the waters are calm, we recommend going into the open water and paddling the two-thirds of a mile journey southwest to Spanish Harbor Key.

This part of the Florida Keys is exceptions for wildlife watching . Whether you’re kayaking in South Florida looking for dolphins or hoping for sharks and rays, Bahia Honda and the Railroad Bridge channel are two of the best places to see marine life.

One of the most unique views you’ll find while kayaking in South Florida, the route from Bahia Honda Key and State Park to Spanish Harbor Key takes you along the old railroad bridge, which is one of the most iconic sights in the Florida Keys. You can haul out on the south side of Spanish Harbor Key where you’ll find tidepools and even sandy spots at low tide. Low tide is wonderful for birdwatching in the Florida Keys .

Note : the current through the channel here is fierce sometimes and you’ll want to be sure to paddle far enough away from the bridges towards the open water to navigate safely. Being a strong paddler is very important here and this should not be attempted by novices.

  • Calusa Beach & Loggerhead Beach  – on weekends and late mornings there may be a wait to enter the state park
  • Spanish Harbor Key tide pool beach

Famous Fisheating Creek, Palmdale

This is where kayaking in South Florida really changes, as Fisheating Creek is the interior. It’s where old Florida meets the subtropical jungle. Paddlers have hyped up Fisheating Creek as one of the most scenic and unique paddles in Florida. The river is full of ancient cypress trees, Spanish moss, air plants, and an abundance of wildlife.

Swimming is not recommended due to the presence of alligators and water moccasins. The 52 mile long river starts in Highlands County and ends at Lake Okeechobee. Upstream from Fisheating Creek Outpost is where most paddlers start their adventure.

For more information on the area, visit Fisheating Creek Outpost’s official website .

  • Fisheating Creek Outpost

National and State Park Kayaking in South Florida

There are 11 National Park sites in Florida and ten times as many state parks. You’ll find that nearly all of them have some sort of kayaking or canoeing option. Many state parks have rental vendors located on site, and there are authorized vendors in Biscayne and Everglades National Parks for rentals and tours.

Check out our guide to Kayaking in Florida State and National Parks here!

Biscayne National Park, Homestead or Islandia

Kayakers visiting Biscayne National Park will find plenty of opportunities to explore the mangrove-lined shorelines and shallow bay waters. The park’s expansive Biscayne Bay is perfect for crossing to Elliott or Boca Chita Keys, and experienced kayakers can find plenty of enjoyable routes to explore.

Tip: due to the size and expansiveness of Biscayne National Park, planning a kayaking trip with the Biscayne Institute is recommended. They are the National Park Service authorized vendor.

Adams Key is the most popular launching spot and a great spot to base yourself and explore the lagoons, creeks and channels to the north in Biscayne National Park. Given the shallow waters, you won’t see motorized vessels in the area and you’ll have the place all to yourself. The paddle if you’re kayaking from Adams Key is long, so be well prepared.

Visit the National Park Services website for more information and regulations.

Where to launch:

  • Dante Fascell Visitor Center – Homestead, FL map here
  • Adams Key parking area – parking not guaranteed

Everglades National Park in Homestead or Everglades City, FL

The biodiversity of the Everglades subtropical setting touches both the Gulf coast and the Atlantic. Kayakers have the option to start on either side when launching on a multi-day excursion. The best way to take in Everglades National Park is through the Wilderness Waterway, a trail between Everglades City and the Flamingo area at the southern end of the National Park.

Tide charts will be your savior from getting stuck in mud during low tide. It is recommended to make this trip during the winter or spring, taking full advantage of the winds and fewer chances of severe and unexpected weather. Start in Everglades City in the 10,00 Islands area and end at the Flamingo visitors center. Embarking on this trip is best done through an outfitter as it requires planning and back-country permits.

Our recommended outfitter is Everglades Florida Adventure . If you do want to do this on your own and have the experience and the proper gear and training (there are crocodiles AND alligators), to help you plan your trip, visit the National Park Service website .

We went kayaking in the 10,000 Islands area of Everglades National Park while visiting Naples and Marco Island. It was an easy drive from town to Chokoloskee, and the boat-assisted kayaking tour was remarkable. The wildlife in the mangroves, especially the birds, was beautiful and the final destination of Rabbit Key was just WOW.

Go out with Everglades Area Tours for this specific experience. You won’t be disappointed!

The other aspect of kayaking in Everglades National Park is going through the river of grass. There are only a few places where you can launch a kayak and NOT potentially cross paths with airboats. The Turner River launch at the Edge of Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve is one of those spots. This is alligator territory for sure, so be prepared to see lots of gators as you explore the area.

  • Gulf Coast Visitor Center
  • Flamingo Visitor Center
  • Turner River Kayak Launch (Big Cypress area)

Cayo Costa State Park on the Gulf of Mexico

A favorite South Florida kayaking spot (maybe even considered central Florida) Cayo Costa is very special and one of the least visited state parks in Florida. Kayakers looking to visit Cayo Costa State Park will find nearly miles of trails winding their way through three distinct ecosystems. Note: Hurricane Ian in 2022 hit the island hard and changed it forever. It’s still beautiful, but kayaking to the cabins and staying there isn’t currently possible (2023).

The highlight of the park is the over 8 miles of undeveloped, natural beaches – perfect for finding seclusion and some well-deserved peace and quiet. The park’s numerous islands and passages between them are teeming with wildlife including manatees, dolphins, alligators, osprey, eagles and many seabirds. One highlight includes the Manatee Hole, a small lagoon where manatees can be seen year-round.

For more information visit the Cayo Costa State Park section of the Florida State Parks website . Here you’ll also find information about camping on the small island.

  • Safe Harbor Pineland
  • Bocilla Island Boat Ramp
  • Gasparilla Island State Park beach

Kayaking in Big Cypress National Preserve

If you’re a kayaker looking for an amazing Florida adventure, be sure to check out Big Cypress National Preserve . Bordering the Everglades National Park, Big Cypress is a diverse marine estuary swamp spanning over 700,000 acres. The preserve is home to a wide variety of plant life and animals, including the endangered Florida panther.

There are plenty of trails to explore, but the best time to paddle the waterways is between November and March when temperatures are more tolerable and the water levels are consistent. There isn’t a National Park authorized vendor at this time (March 2022) but you can launch and paddle on your own. Be sure to register at one of the visitor centers AND to let somebody else know what you’re doing, where you’re going, and when you should be back.

For more information visit National Park Services website, specifically the kayaking and canoeing section . See Canoe Trails info here

  • Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center
  • Turner River Kayak Launch
  • DO NOT LAUNCH FROM MITCHELL LANDING ( map here ) – if you’re unfamiliar with the area and just looking at a map, you’ll see this is a boat launch, but it is for airboats and is not suitable for kayaking or canoeing.

Recommended Kayaking Tours in South Florida

While we realized not everyone visiting South Florida are experienced kayakers, we still believe that a trip into the Everglades National Park is a must. Those pressed on time will enjoy a guided tour with Everglades Adventures Kayak & Eco Tours from the Everglades City entrance. Their team of professionals will take you through mangrove tunnels and cypress ponds full of exotic Floridian wildlife!

Note : there are no guided kayaking tours from the Shark Valley area of Everglades National Park, just the overland tram tour or bike rentals.

If you find yourself in the city of Fort Lauderdale just north of Miami, there are also opportunities to paddle. Fort Lauderdale is part of Broward County, and with over 300 miles of navigable waterways in this county alone, it’s a great place for kayaking in South Florida. Nicknamed the Venice of America, it offers more than just beautiful beaches! We recommend hopping on a kayak and exploring the Venice of America. Sunrise Paddleboards does both SUP and kayaking tours through the nature preserve and they can accommodate nearly any age and skill level.

Regardless of where you are in Florida paddling options abound and are a must do in the Sunshine state!

When to Visit South Florida

Visiting South Florida is a great idea year round if you’re trying to either escape the cold or really want to feel like you’re cooking in an instapot. From Jupiter and Palm Beach county, across to Bradenton and southward, it never really gets too cold, so they are all year-round destinations for kayaking and beach days. In summer though, it really can get hot, so if you’re kayaking in South Florida May through September, plan your paddling to start early in the day.

Check out our guide to visiting the Florida Keys in Summer , as the same principles apply to visiting South Florida for kayaking in summer.

Weather in South Florida

If you’re looking to kayak in South Florida, late October to early March is typically the best time to do so. The weather is usually calmer during this time, and you’re more likely to see migratory birds and other wildlife. Keep in mind that there may be more storms in the later part of March and into April.

For summer trips for kayaking in South Florida, you will need to be wary of storms and the possibility of getting hit by lightning, though rare, is very much possible. The Atlantic hurricane season starts on June 1 and lasts until November 30. The season peaks in August through early October as surface temperatures in the Atlantic hit their highest temperatures, but there is usually ample warning if a named storm, or even just a bad weather system, is going to make its way through.

Need to Know for South Florida

Beyond the weather considerations mentioned above, tides and bugs are important factors when planning your trip. Mosquitoes are a common problem in South Florida, so be sure to take precautions during activities and use insect repellent. The weather is conducive to high levels of mosquitoes, so make sure you’re prepared.

Moreover, you’ll want to check the water conditions, specifically the tides, when planning a trip, especially in some of the national parks such as the Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve. Our advice, trade the bugs for the migratory birds and the muggy stormy weather for cooler temperatures and visit in the winter!

Wildlife While Kayaking in South Florida

One last consideration is wildlife. Florida has incredible creatures that can seem rather intimidating. While you always want to keep your distance, both for your safety and that of the animals, you need to be aware of aggressive or unusual behaviors as you paddle. The most common wildlife you’re encounter while kayaking in South Florida includes alligators, manatees, sharks, turtles (sea and freshwater), dolphins (salt water and Intracoastal paddling), and then crocodiles.

Dolphins and manatees tend to be curious and playful, but don’t often directly approach paddlers. You will want to keep at least 15 feet from manatees and 50 yards+ from dolphins, unless they are coming to you. They don’t often cause problems for kayakers, but you DON’T want to surprise a manatee by sneaking up on it and then experience what’s called a manatee rodeo.

When it comes to sharks and sea turtles, you may see them, both only briefly. It’s not common for either to stick around for long. You may enjoy being escorted through shallow salt water by a sting ray or eagle ray, but again, that’s usually breif.

Being aware of alligators and crocodiles is very important. While neither is usually interested in humans in any capacity, if they are approached, taunted, fed or if they’re protecting young, you’ll want to get away from them pretty quickly. Most of the time when you see alligators they’re disinterested and would rather just sleep, and it’s the same with crocodiles.

Note : crocodiles are found in saltwater and only in a few places, mainly the Upper Keys and western side of the Everglades, but these are wild animals, so they can go wherever they like.

I hope you’re excited to explore and enjoy kayaking in South Florida. It’s really the best way to experience this beautiful place, and the diversity of sights and wildlife make it a paddling bucket list destination.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave a comment or send us a note . We’re happy to help plan kayaking trips!

History of Blue Springs

Blue Springs is rich in history. Blue Springs was visited by botanist John Bartram in 1776. John Bartram is an early American botanist and explorer. He is called the father of botany. He is also the father of William Bartram, a famous naturalist, botanist and explorer. John sketched and wrote about the flora and fauna of Florida and the St Johns River.

In 1856, a New Yorker by the name Louis Thursby bought Blue Springs and moved his family down to a small wooden shack, and started an orang growing business. A few years later he built a large plantation style home on top of a Indian midden, which still stands on the property today. Thursby's Blue Springs Landing was a hot spot for steam boat activity, shipping goods and tourists back and forth to Jacksonville on the St Johns River.

In 1880 the railroad came in and eventually the steam boats became a thing of the past. In the 1890's a killing freeze occurred, wiping out the citrus grove pushing the industry further south. Thursby and his family switched his focus to the tourist trade, and took advantage of the beautiful spring and excellent hunting and fishing opportunities along the St Johns River.

In 1971 a famous French marine biologist by the name of Jacques Cousteau filmed a documentary about the manatees of Blue Springs for an episode of a very popular program on TV called the Under Water World of Jacques Cousteau. The episode was called the forgotten mermaids. The documentary highlighted the Florida manatees and the importance of Blue Springs as the manatees winter refuge. Bringing attention to Blue Springs sparked the Florida department of environmental protection to purchased the land one year later in 1972, and begin the manatee protection program.

The St Johns River

The Saint Johns River is the longest river in Florida. The river is 310 miles long and begins south in Indian River county, and flows north to Mayport in Jacksonville, where is dumps into the Atlantic Ocean. It's been called the lazy river because it flows at a rate of 3 mph. There is only 30 ft. difference in elevation between the headwaters and the mouth of the river, Blue Springs is the largest spring on the St Johns River.

Florida Wildlife Commission Viewing Guide Line for the Florida Manatee

The Florida manatee is a threatened species and is protected by federal and state law. Please do not disturb or harass manatees. Harassment is defined as any activity that alters the animal's natural behavior. By altering the manatee's natural behavior, you may create the likelihood of danger that is bad for the animal and against the law.

Look, but don't touch. Please don't feed manatees or give them water. If manatees become accustomed to being around humans, it can alter their behavior in the wild, perhaps causing them to lose their natural fear of boats and people, which may make them more susceptible to injury or death. . Do not pursue or chase a manatee. Never poke, prod or stab a manatee with your hands, feet or any object. If a manatee avoids you, do not chase the animal for a closer view. Give manatees space to move. Avoid isolating or singling out an individual manatee from its group and do not separate a cow and her calf. Keep hands and objects to yourself. Don't attempt to snag, hook, hold, grab, pinch, hit or ride a manatee.

3-Day Everglades Kayak Tour

5-day everglades kayak tour, 8-day everglades kayak tour, read what our clients are saying, rachel r, 2023.

This is a fantastic trip! I chose the 5 day trip and loved every minute. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and easy going. I never once worried about my safety with them around. They know how to navigate the tides and the twisting maze of mangroves. They welcome any questions you have about everything from the plants and animals to kayaking to camping. They take care of you completely and make the trip truly worth it!

John M, 2023

We are fairly experienced outdoor “adventurers,” having hiked, kayaked, and white-water rafted uncountable times. But the five-day kayak/camping trip we took, guided by Dave K. and “Bonesy,” was remarkable. A rigorous physical experience for a couple in their 60s and 70s, challenging but rewarding. Nights on the ground, in a tent, surrounded by the sounds of buzzing bugs but also the splashes of leaping mullet, the puffs of manatee breathing, the hooting of owls.

Odyssey, 2023

I had an incredible time with the FOA. Very knowledgeable and passionate about showing others the Everglades! I learned so much about the flora and fauna.

Tamera G, 2023

We fully enjoyed our kayak trip with Dave K. His love and respect for the history of the area and the Everglades environment shows in how he runs his tour. We had quite a windy and rainy trip and Dave was careful to choose routes and camp spots to accommodate the weather when it blew in. The trip requires some physical and mental stamina, but it was well worth it to experience this remote area. I am very glad we were able to find Dave and paddle with him.

Jill Y, 2022

In short, this is a trip very much worth doing. But listen to Dave’s instructions and do some Googling so you know exactly where you are going and boned up a bit on the flora, fauna and local history. It will enhance your experience.

Lynn Nesmith, 2022

Trip was amazingly on every level. Dave is professional and knowledgeable about nature. Food was beyond my wildest expectations. Dave worked around the weather and adjusted our destinations to ensure the best possible camping locations and kayak routes. We saw an array of wildlife, but not a single python

Marcia W, 2022

I am SO grateful for the 5-day kayak tour that Dave led, exactly the way that he led it. All seven of us appreciated Dave’s extensive experience, excellent fresh food, and first-rate equipment. Above an beyond them, Dave gave us an element of discovery such as when we approached coves with dolphins, or walked past the cemetery on Fakahatchee Island. He led us to them without introduction, and quietly let us appreciate them for the first time. Many thanks for sharing the remote islands of southwest Florida with us!

Ryan J, 2022

Dave and Bonesy were great experienced guides. We saw so much wildlife and really enjoyed our three day trip!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i bring my camera on the kayak.

Yes, but only if you are willing to risk getting it wet. Because there are no dry storage compartments onboard, we recommend keeping all valuables locked in your vehicle, and bringing a Ziploc-type bag for your keys and anything else you need with you. HOWEVER, FREE HD photography is included with every tour and is sent to you by email following your trip.

Do I need kayaking experience to enjoy this tour?

No. General instruction is provided at the beginning of each tour to ensure the comfort level of all paddlers.

Do you have tandem kayaks?

Yes. We now have tandem kayaks available through our affiliated partners at Rising Tide Explorers. Tandem kayaks are great for children under 12 years old with an adult.

Do you rent kayaks?

Yes, there are kayak rentals available through our affiliated partners at Rising Tide Explorers. Please let them know that Rookery Bay Research Reserve referred you.

I would like to bring my own kayak – is this OK?

Our tours include all equipment and are limited to 10-12 paddlers, for the safety and quality of experience. If you would like to bring your own kayak, please call (239) 530-5972 to obtain approval from your guide and receive a discounted rate for your guided tour ($50 per paddlers).

What if I get tired, lose my paddle, or get hurt?

These tours are low-intensity and intended for peaceful enjoyment and education, not competition. Beginners are welcome! Our experienced guides are ACA kayaking instructors and always come prepared for emergencies.

What is the difficulty level?

Difficulty level is beginner and moderate upper body strength is required. Tours do not encounter any rapids or dangerous crossings. However, in some locations kayakers will need to paddle into the current.

Where can I launch my own kayak to explore the Reserve?

We do not own or manage the launch site at the Shell Island Road launch, so whoever chooses to use it does so at their own risk. There is a non-motorized vessel launch on the corner of Collier Boulevard and Capri Boulevard just north of Marco Island called the Isles of Capri Paddlecraft Park. It was developed by the Reserve and is managed by Collier County Parks & Recreation.

Why must I wear closed-toed shoes?

Water shoes are recommended because oyster shells are among the potential hazards your toes may encounter while getting in or out of the kayak at the launch site and elsewhere in the Reserve in the unlikely event you end up in the water.

Will I get wet?

Yes, usually only from your knees down.

9 Best Places To Kayak With Manatees In Florida

August 16, 2021 //  by  Florida Trippers

Are you wondering where you can kayak with manatees in Florida? You have come to the right place. In this article, we will walk you through where to kayak with manatees and give you all the information you need.

Kayaking with manatees in Florida is such a special experience, one we feel everyone needs to have once in their life. All the places we have mentioned here allow you to do this safely and in no way endanger the animals.

Manatees are such lovely creatures also known as sea cows they are like giant friendly animals in the water. They are also are protected under the Endangered Species Act and under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

These protections were put in place when the numbers started to decline. In 1991 there was believed to be just over 1,200 and now there are approx 6,500. They are still a threatened species though so please be careful.

The best place to kayak with manatees in Florida is in the springs. The water tends to be clearer here so you can see them easier. In winter they move towards the springs so there is more of a concentration in one place.

The best time to see them tends to be from November to March peaking in December, January, and February.

While kayaking with manatees in Florida please don’t ever touch the manatees or interfere with them in any way. Just observe them from your kayak and be a passive observer of them. Do not feed them human food or chase them.

Manatees are intelligent animals and really friendly and curious so they might approach you if you are lucky. If they do just observe. Never kayak over a resting manatee and use shallow paddles so you keep your disturbance to a minimum.

So are you ready to learn where you can kayak with manatees in Florida? Here are the best manatee kayaking spots in Florida.

Manatee swimming in crystal river

Kayaking Crystal River

Crystal River has one of the largest populations of wild manatees in the world. If you want to kayak with manatees in Florida, Crystal River is a perfect day out and a great place to see these amazing creatures.

Just 90 minutes from Tampa it’s easy to get to and well served with amenities. You can hire kayaks here or go on a kayak tour. You can of course also bring your own kayak.

Crystal River is in Kings Bay Park and Three Sister Spring is accessible from the river. The water is refreshing and the scenery is luscious. This really is a beautiful area.

It is best to go as early as you can and on a weekday when the area is less busy. If the water is crowded with manatees you might find the location or parts of the location closed. Do not go into the closed areas they are there to protect the manatees.

Manatees flock here in the winter months for the warmer water of the springs. There are 70 springs in this 600-acre bay. It is believed as many as 800 manatees arrive here in the winter months.

During peak manatees months you can not kayak in the springs however you will see manatees in other areas. If you come just before they close the spring off you are likely to see some in the springs.

This is also one of the only places you can swim with manatees.

If you are looking into kayaking with manatees in Florida and are short on time this is the place to go.

Kayaking Manatee Park in Fort Myers

A warm-water refuge for the manatee when the Florida water gets too cold for them. The warm water in Manette park is not heated by a spring but by a power plant that discharges warm water.

Again the best time to see them is in December to February but they do hang around from November to March.

Some areas are closed to kayaks but you can spot them outside of these closed areas. The water isn’t clear here like a spring so they are a little more challenging to find.

The park is free to enter although parking does cost. You can rent a kayak or bring your own. You can also enjoy the butterfly garden, nature trail, and ethnobotany trail in the park.

The area around the canal where the manatees ‘hang out’ is off-limits with a fence. This area is always busy so kayak upstream a bit on the Orange River. Not only will it be more tranquil but you will get to see curious manatees by your boat.

A great spot close to Fort Myers .

Kayaking In Blue Springs Orlando

Blue Springs State Park was established after researchers tracked manatees swimming up from the St Johns River and it is a great place to kayak with manatees in Florida.

Swimming with the manatees is not permitted however by kayak you can easily see the manatees from a safe distance.

The water here is so clear and they are really easy to spot and as many as 500 have been known to frequent this area at peak season. In peak manatee season the spring is closed off to kayaks but you often will see them in St John’s River.

In the summer some manatees come to this area to birth and nurse their young calves so you may see one out of season.

A lot of research happens in Blue Springs and there is an under and over water webcam so you can spy on the manatees even when you are not there.

Kayaking At Silver Springs

Famous for its glass-bottom boats and used as a location in many a blockbuster kayaking with manatees in Florida doesn’t get better than at Silver Springs State Park!

Firstly you can actually hire glass-bottom tandem kayaks. Second, you have five miles of protected waterways here. Thirdly the water here is so clear.

In the winter the manatees will come into the spring area in the warmer months they will venture out to the river. You will know you are near one from ripples in the water or the trademark noise they make when they surface to breathe.

This park is one of the largest artesian springs in the world. There are lots to do here and while it can get busy it tends to not be quieter than some of the easier-to-reach spring locations in the state.

Kayaking At Manatee Springs State Park

Located in Chiefland , Florida it’s a first magnitude spring, and manatees love the warm water at the mouth of the springhead from the Suwanee River.

It opens at 8 a.m until sundown it costs $6 a vehicle. This state park has an 800-foot boardwalk that overlooks the springs so it’s also easy to see the manatees without even getting in the water.

The kayak launch area is near the northwest corner of the parking lot and you can rent a kayak if you don’t have one.

The springs are also home to 5 miles of underwater caves and are a popular scuba diving location. You will also find a picnic area, tables, grills, and pavilions.

The park also offers 8.5 miles of nature trails and a safe connection to the 32-mile Nature Coast State Trail. There is much more to do here than just kayak with manatees.

A great location to really make a day of it.

Kayaking In Lovers Key Fort Myers Beach

Despite having one of the loveseat beaches in Florida this island is a perfect place for kayaking with manatees. Manatees can be seen in the lagoons and canals surrounding the island if the water is at the right temperature.

While you can do a lot here bird watching and beachcombing to name a few we recommended you rent a kayak and enjoy the waters. The island is so secluded you can often hear the manatees communicating with each other before you actually see any.

Park rangers lead tours daily that last about three hours and this is the best way to know you are looking in the right direction. The guides will lead you to all the hotspots. Hopefully, you will see these amazing creatures playing, rolling around, and somersaulting.

You don’t have to go on a tour there is a kayak launch, use the boat ramp, but we feel it gives you the best chance of seeing manatees.

This place really is beautiful and don’t be surprised if you see a wedding taking place it’s a popular wedding location .

Aerial show of two people in an orange kayak with two manatees swimming around them

Kayaking At Weeki Wachee Springs State Park

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is home to the deepest freshwater cave system in the country and abundant protected wildlife, including manatees.

The springs and river that feed it are beautiful and with average water temperatures in the river of 72 F, you will often see manatees in the warm waters or the clear spring.

You can see manatees at any point on the river and springhead and look out for the darker areas of the river as there are some underground springs here which the manatees love.

When kayaking with manatees here head upstream as this is where you are most likely to find them. You can launch from the spa area or rent a kayak here.

A manatee swimming in Weeki Wachee spring in an article about where to kayak with manatees in Florida

Kayaking At Tarpon Springs

In Craig Park there is Spring Bayou it’s a freshwater spring that attracts manatees. The manatees are best seen here between December and March.

You can launch a kayak here along the southern bank of the Anclote River however we recommend if you can going on a tour in one of the completely clear kayaks.

Firstly completely clear kayaks need we say more but secondly, the manatees are less protected here so you don’t want to do anything to disturb them. Thirdly a local guide will have much more knowledge of where the manatees are preferring to hang out at the moment.

Only 45 minutes from Tampa this is a great spot to go if you are short on time. There are also lots of things to do in Tarpon Springs so you can totally make a day of it.

A Manatee swimming underwater

Kayaking At Ichetucknee Springs

Many think that the Ichetucknee River and Springs are some of the best kayaking in Florida. This area is just naturally beautiful and the blue-green water and lazy river are just so relaxing. It’s a real tropical paradise.

No one told the manatees though and while you can kayak with manatees here we can’t guarantee you will see one wherein some of the other locations you almost definitely will.

The river is fed by nine springs and the current is gentle making it great for tubing in the summer and kayaking in winter months where you might spot a manatee.

It’s a beautiful three-mile paddle from the northern to southern point. If you are patient and lucky you will see a manatee or two but don’t expect the numbers you get elsewhere.

Whether you see an elusive manatee or not you won’t be disappointed as the other wildlife is much easier to spot in the quieter winter months.

If you have never kayaked before this is a great place to start the water is crystal clear, there are no barriers along the way and the current is swift enough to carry you without scaring you.

Bring your own canoe or hire one. You will need to park in the southern part of the park and you will be shuttled to the northern starting point.

If you want to chance to see a manatee in a beautiful location then this is for you.

A Manatee up against a kayak in an article about kayaking with manatee Florida

As you can see there are many places to kayak with manatees in Florida. There is nothing like seeing these gentle giants in the wild.

Manette kayaking in a once in a lifetime experience, it is a special privilege that we hope you get to experience. Please come back and tell us all about it. We would love to know how kayaking with the manatees went for you.

Dive or snorkel colourful coral reefs, kayak in subtropical mangroves and pedal along winding trails in this southern oasis full of outstanding outdoor pursuits.

florida kayak tours

A 125-mile-long archipelago at the southernmost tip of the US, the Florida Keys are made up of around 1,700 laid-back islands. Stretching like a string of pearls across the teal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the Keys are best known for sandy beaches and bohemian culture. Beyond sun-worshipping and sipping rum runners (the area’s signature cocktail), there are also boundless activities for outdoor enthusiasts keen to explore this palm-fringed paradise. From snorkelling and sailing to biking and kayaking, the Keys offer a multitude of fun ways to inject adventure into a classic Florida holiday.

Snorkelling & diving in coral gardens

With a wealth of coral-lined islands rich in marine life, the Keys are an ideal spot to sink into balmy waters and discover delicate reef systems. Just off Key Largo lies the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park — the first underwater park in the US. Glide through clear waters and explore vivid coral gardens teeming with aquatic life. With 48,000 acres of protected ocean to explore, you’ll find a rich ecosystem of tropical fish, sea turtles, lobsters and fierce-looking barracudas that call this diverse region home. Book a PADI scuba dive tour to get up close and personal with Christ of the Abyss — a towering bronze sculpture of Jesus below the surface of the water.

Kayaking through the mangroves

Grab a paddle and venture into the ethereal mangroves of Key West — a dense labyrinth of jungly tunnels and crystalline creeks. Guided kayak tours take you deep into this watery haven, where you’ll paddle through narrow passages shaded by the jade-green mangrove canopy. Wait until the sun sinks below the horizon and take a guided night kayak tour for the chance to see nocturnal marine life such as manatees emerging in the fading light. Family-owned tour operator Night Kayak Key West offers an evening excursion through the mangroves, where you’ll paddle a glass-bottomed kayak with LED lights illuminating the world below.

Biking the Overseas Heritage Trail

Discover the Keys on two wheels by cycling over 90 miles of paved roads on the expanding Overseas Heritage Trail , which traces the historic Overseas Railroad. With its ultimate aim of connecting Key Largo to Key West, this multi-use and largely car-free trail is perfect for those wanting to explore this scenic region under their own steam. Cycle over former rail bridges, traverse tree-lined beach tracks and glide along beside turquoise waters. Key Largo Bike and Adventure Tours offers rentals and self-guided bike tours where you can set your own pace and distance, with planned routes, luggage delivery and bike pick-up in Key West.

Monkey and manatees draw in visitors to Silver Springs State Park

SILVER SPRINGS, Fla. — This time of year, hundreds of people head to Silver Springs every day to get a glimpse of two main attractions — manatees and monkeys.

What You Need To Know

Silver springs state park  is home to manatees and monkeys this time of the year manatees seek shelter along the silver river in the winter because of colder temperatures wild rhesus macaque monkeys roam the banks and hang out in the trees along the river kayaking florida  can take you to see both manatees and monkeys..

Both animals make their home in and around the Silver River this time of the season.

Montana “Sassy” Steele of Kayaking Florida wants you to experience all the creatures that live along this waterway, as well as learn about its unique relationship to Hollywood.

For years, she has been taking guests out to explore the pristine waterway.

When visitors book a tour with Sassy (she prefers that name), kayaking equipment will be waiting and ready to go upon arrival at Silver Springs State Park in Marion County.

You can rent both kayaks (clear kayaks are available) and paddleboards with Kayaking Florida.

To begin, instruction is provided to all guests on how to maneuver a kayak or paddleboard and some basic rules of the river.

From there, a tour guide leads visitors along the river, sharing her vast knowledge about the spring and waterway to her group.

“This first spring we get to is called the head spring or Mammoth Spring. It is the largest natural artisan spring in the world,” Steele said as she paddled along the water.

During the winter months, manatees are often abundant in the water because of the cooler temperatures and a solid supply of seagrass to eat.

They are easy to spot and photograph because of the extremely clear water.

“We try and take as many pictures as we can because, a lot of time, people are from out of state, and they have never seen one of these (manatees) before,” Steele said.

Guide also share their knowledge about the area’s relationship with Hollywood.

“That is where ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ was filmed,” Steele said.

Silver Springs was once a location for shooting movies, TV series and commercials, and pieces of movie sets remain above and below the river.

Steele said she likes guests to also see the Rhesus Macaque monkeys that live along the Silver River, but they can be tricky to find because of their coloring and the fact the primates are always on the move.

“We’re pretty dedicated,” Steele said. “We learn their behavior and where they like to hang out at,” she said.

Monkeys arrived in the area during the 1930s, when a tour operator placed a troop on an island in the river.

Little did he know the monkeys could swim, and they disappeared. Some have been found as far south as Sarasota and as far north as Jacksonville.

An estimated 400 monkeys roam the riverbanks at any given time.

“We ask that people don’t come under the trees they are in,” Steele said. “And you stay off the sides of the banks. And obviously, never feed any wildlife.”

Kayaking Florida operates tours each week, and the cost is $75 per person.
