GRAMMY.com’s 50th Anniversary Of Hip-Hop Coverage: A Recap

The Recording Academy’s celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary included televised events and captivating interviews. Check out the wide range of articles and features produced by GRAMMY.com commemorating this musical milestone.

When we look back at the Recording Academy’s 2023, the 50th anniversary of hip-hop will loom exceptionally large.

The ongoing celebration permeated every facet of the world’s leading society of music professionals this year, from the 65th Annual Awards Ceremony in February to the special airing of "A GRAMMY Salute To Hip-Hop" in December — a dense, thrillingly kaleidoscopic televised tribute to the breadth of this genre.

One major accompaniment to this was coverage of the genre’s legacy via GRAMMY.com, the editorial site run by the Recording Academy. If you haven’t been keeping up, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a highlight reel of the work GRAMMY.com published in honor of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

We Profiled Rising Stars

From Lola Brooke to Tkay Maidza , GRAMMY.com engaged in comprehensive in-depth interviews with artists who are at the forefront of shaping the future of hip-hop, and held a roundtable discussion about exactly what the next 50 years might look like.

We Published Conversations With Legends

DJ Kool Herc and Questlove , who have played unquestionable roles in hip-hop’s continuing evolution, spoke to GRAMMY.com about their profound and abiding connections to the idiom.

The Contributions Of Women Were Highlighted

Without the inspired vision of countless women, hip-hop would not be what it is today. The "Ladies First" segment, which kicked off "A GRAMMY Salute To Hip-Hop" featuring Queen Latifah , Monie Love , and MC Lyte , among other lady greats with Spinderella as DJ, was an ode to this.

In acknowledgment of female trailblazers in a world dominated by men, GRAMMY.com wrote about teen girl pioneers , women behind the scenes , a revealing Netflix doc , and women artists pushing the genre forward in 2023, from Ice Spice to Lil Simz .

We Revisted Hip-Hop’s Biggest Releases

From Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers ) to Jay-Z’ s The Black Album to Cardi B ’s Invasion of Privacy , GRAMMY.com dove deep into the core hip-hop canon. We also broke down the genre’s development decade by decade through the 70s , 80s , 90s , 00s , 10s , and 20s , with a focus on classic albums from each era.

We Criss-Crossed The Country

GRAMMY.com’s series of regional guides — from the Bay Area and SoCal , to Texas and the Dirty South , to D.C. and NYC — highlight hip-hop’s diversity of culture and sound.

We Went International

Although hip-hop is a quintessentially American phenomenon, its impact, appeal, and influence has spread worldwide. The international appetite for hip-hop was showcased in coverage of Latinx and Argentinian rappers to know, as well as five international hip-hop scenes to know : France, Nigeria, Brazil, South Africa, and England.

We Explored Hip-Hop’s Larger Impact

Hip-hop is more than a sound. It’s a culture that permeates almost every sector of life. Showcasing this effervescence, GRAMMY.com ran pieces about the evolution of hip-hop’s influence on educational curriculum worldwide, as well as its biggest fashion and style moments .

We Covered On Stage Celebrations

"A GRAMMY Salute To 50 Years Of Hip-Hop," the two-hour special that aired in December on CBS and is available on demand on Paramount+ represented a culmination of the Recording Academy’s 50th year anniversary celebration.

Inside Resonance: Celebrating 50 Years Of Hip-Hop At The GRAMMY Museum

"Nothing resonates more in our everyday lives than hip-hop," Jimmy Jam said during the celebratory event Resonance, which honored the legacy of hip-hop at the GRAMMY Museum.

The Recording Academy is continuing to honor the legacy of hip-hop, to one of the most popular genres of music in America. Held on Dec. 4 at the GRAMMY Museum in downtown Los Angeles, Resonance: Celebrating 50 Years of Hip-Hop was presented by the Academy's Black Music Collective and sponsored by City National Bank.

The Resonance event took over the Museum's fourth floor, which is home to the recently unveiled " Hip Hop America: The Mixtape Exhibit ." There, members and leadership from the Academy and BMC, along with musicians and industry professionals, celebrated 50 years of music that has transcended boundaries, inspired advocacy and fostered impactful social change.

Guests were welcomed into the space by an unparalleled collection of artifacts — an ode to the genre through memorabilia and interactive displays showcasing the evolution of hip-hop music and culture. Tupac ’s all-white suit — worn in the last video he made — is displayed next to Notorious B.I.G. 's red leather pea jacket worn in the music video for Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s "Players Anthem." The impact of the museum’s intentionally curated collection evokes the extended struggle of the Black experience in America, while celebrating its culture, creativity, and endurance against all odds.

The power of connection and representation was emphasized by five-time GRAMMY winner Jimmy Jam , an R&B songwriter, music producer, and illustrious GRAMMY Museum Board Member. "The idea of 'resonance' struck a chord in me because the mission is unification, amplification and to celebrate Black music. Nothing resonates more in our everyday lives than hip-hop."

A legendary figure who made his mark in the '80s by producing artists such as Janet Jackson, Jimmy Jam and producing partner Terry Lewis , were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

"I'm proud to have known my partner Terry Lewis for 50 years. We were raised on hip-hop," he told the crowd. "Hip-hop inspires, it embodies transcendence. Hip-hop advocates and fosters social change, and the cultural significance is astounding."

Jimmy Jam highlighted the integral role of partnerships between the Black Music Collective and sponsor/supporters such as City National Bank and Amazon Music. Such relationships have enabled the third year of the Amazon Music-sponsored Your Future Is Now , a scholarship program.

"We have the opportunity to pour knowledge, resources and many opportunities into the young talent and the young creatives of the future. And that's what we're here to do," he continued.

GRAMMY Museum Board Member and Executive Vice President of City National Bank, Linda Duncombe, who was introduced by Jimmy Jam as "music’s best friend" spoke to the critical work of support.

"We protect and celebrate those who have shared their gift as well as ensure their artistic contributions are accessible for people of all walks of life around the world and for future generations," she said, adding that as a Museum board member, "educating the next generation of artists and teachers is always top of mind. The 'Mixtape Exhibit' really will inspire students to pursue hip hop and the music industry."

Host Lady London , a rapper and songwriter from The Bronx summed up the power of hip-hop and its ability to transcend music. A hyped crowd enthusiastically received her words.

"It's beautiful to see what we have been able to cultivate in such a short amount of time. We are the culture, we have the power to shift the culture and we continue to move mountains," she said. "We are influences in fashion and design and the Black family education, economic empowerment, the arts. We're limitless.

"We have balanced everything and there is nothing that is quite parallel to that," Lady London continued. "I'm so proud to be a part of the culture."

As guests mingled among the exhibits many displays and highlights like original lyric sketches, mixtapes, and an interactive "sonic playground" where guests could interact with recording devices, make 808 beats and record tracks. Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. reflected on the culmination of a year celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

"Hip hop has been a defining force in our culture and it is so important to be able to honor it in this way" he said. "This is the end of a year that started with us celebrating at our GRAMMY Awards show last season."

Los Angeles' DJ Jadaboo — who has performed for Tommy Hilfiger at New York Fashion Week and a slew of celebrity parties and high profile events — set the vibe all night. Her mix spanned all five decades of the genre and beyond, from R&B to hip hop classics by Jay-Z and Drake , stacking much-sampled songs like Curtis Mayfield ’s "Pusher Man" into the set.

As the event carried on, Jimmy Jam’s earlier remarks echoed between the museum’s walls. "Look at what's been done in the last 50 years. You see it all around here," he said. "Now take a look at each other and know all that is happening right now… is because we are the people that are gonna continue to carry this on for another 50 years."

GRAMMY Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Honors Hip-Hop's Greats While Accepting Best Rap Album GRAMMY For 'To Pimp a Butterfly' In 2016

Upon winning the GRAMMY for Best Rap Album for 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' Kendrick Lamar thanked those that helped him get to the stage, and the artists that blazed the trail for him.

Updated Friday Oct. 13, 2023 to include info about Kendrick Lamar's most recent GRAMMY wins, as of the 2023 GRAMMYs.

A GRAMMY veteran these days, Kendrick Lamar has won 17 GRAMMYs and has received 47 GRAMMY nominations overall. A sizable chunk of his trophies came from the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards in 2016, when he walked away with five — including his first-ever win in the Best Rap Album category.

This installment of GRAMMY Rewind turns back the clock to 2016, revisiting Lamar's acceptance speech upon winning Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly . Though Lamar was alone on stage, he made it clear that he wouldn't be at the top of his game without the help of a broad support system.

"First off, all glory to God, that's for sure," he said, kicking off a speech that went on to thank his parents, who he described as his "those who gave me the responsibility of knowing, of accepting the good with the bad."

Looking for more GRAMMYs news? The 2024 GRAMMY nominations are here!

He also extended his love and gratitude to his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and shouted out his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. Lamar specifically praised Top Dawg's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, for finding and developing raw talent that might not otherwise get the chance to pursue their musical dreams.

"We'd never forget that: Taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage, to be the best that they can be," Lamar — a Compton native himself — continued, leading into an impassioned conclusion spotlighting some of the cornerstone rap albums that came before To Pimp a Butterfly .

"Hip-hop. Ice Cube . This is for hip-hop," he said. "This is for Snoop Dogg , Doggystyle . This is for Illmatic , this is for Nas . We will live forever. Believe that."

To Pimp a Butterfly singles "Alright" and "These Walls" earned Lamar three more GRAMMYs that night, the former winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and the latter taking Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the song features Bilal , Anna Wise and Thundercat ). He also won Best Music Video for the remix of Taylor Swift 's "Bad Blood."

Lamar has since won Best Rap Album two more times, taking home the golden gramophone in 2018 for his blockbuster LP DAMN ., and in 2023 for his bold fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers .

Watch Lamar's full acceptance speech above, and check back at GRAMMY.com every Friday for more GRAMMY Rewind episodes.

Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage Cruise 2013 Review

Cool Cruiser

Hopefully my review will help others in deciding whether this cruise is for you. Its lengthy, so I'll have to put my review into parts.

This was my first time on the Tom Joyner Cruise. I have been listening to Tom Joyner Radio for close to 15 years and consider myself a regular listener.

My wife and I are graduates of HBCUs and we figured this would be a great way to give back. And as Tom puts it.."Party with a purpose!" However, there is really only two words that best describes this years cruise...DISORGANIZED and to SMALL for the events planned.

For this voyage, you could purchase any of the following packages in addition to the cost of your stateroom. The first being the highest in price and none of which were cheap.

1) VIP access. According to the website this package included guaranteed front row seating to the two main island concerts. JamieFoxx/Ludacris & Earth Wind and Fire. People with this package had orange/pink wrist bands.

2) Club access. This package included preferred seating for two intimate club room concerts on the cruise ship. People with this package had black/white checkerboard wrist bands.

3) Taste of Carnival. This package allowed you to have option to taste 5 different foods (eg. Italian, Carribean, etc) I have no idea what wristband color these were. I didn't meet anyone who got this package. I would love to hear the experience for anyone who did purchase this package.

We choice to add club access to our package since we were more interested in having preferred seating for the intimate setting concerts on the boat. Boy was this a mistake. First off the Tom Joyner staff was completely disorganized and unfamiliar with their own packages. We arrived for Tuesday nights concert featuring Mike Phillip/Avant 30 minutes before show as noted on our club access paperwork, only to be told that there were no more seats and that it was first-come first-serve. Unlike most events where you have separate lines for VIP/preferred seating, they had one line for everyone. Since we didn't get in line TWO hours before the show like others had done, we were out of luck. When we voiced our complaint to the Tom Joyner staff, they themselves could not dispute the problem, but could only tell us to try and find one of their staff members(can't remember his name) before the next nights show and they would insure we could get in. So now we needed to allow extra time for hunting down one out of a hundred staff members on this huge boat? Yeah, right. We quickly learned that our checkerboard wrist bands and the amount we paid for them would mean nothing on this cruise. We never did receive any preferred seating for any event on this cruise, despite paying extra for it. We got in line just like everyone else and hoped there were seats available when we got in.

There were similar stories for people who paid even more than we did for VIP access. From what I've heard, many did not get VIP access to much of anything. Only those who were willing to stand in line up to two hours before an event were guaranteed preferred seating because they were first in line. IF you plan to do this cruise in the future, DO NOT PURCHASE any special access packages. Its a ripoff. Trust me on that one. Save that extra $500-800 bucks for something else.

Thanks for posting. I went to an HBCU (but left after 1 yr for a more traditional college) and was interested in booking this cruise some time in the future. I really appreciate hearing your feedback! So far this does not sound like it's going to be a good story though ;)

Thanks for posting, I too have listened to TJMS for several years and thought about going on this cruise-but the pricing has kept me from booking .

Looking forward to hearing more.....

Yay! So glad you're doing a review. This cruise has came up as a possibility for a fam/friends cruise next year. It already sounds like a bad idea. Can't wait for more.

deetrayn

Thanks for sharing this information, and I'm looking forward to the rest of your review. I've always wanted to go on a Tom Joyner cruise, but the price kept me from going. This cruise is already expensive without any special access packages. I would be very upset about this. I'm sorry you had to experience that. Hopefully, you still enjoyed your vacation.

kenholt

I am also a really big Tom Joyner fan and i have this cruise on my bucket list(LOL).I have heard about the thousands of people cruising and often woundered why not a mega ship for this mega event. I truly hope to go in the very near future and hope they iron out the issues. I will not be buying any extras Thank you for insight!!

Bobblefrog

You didn't get what you paid for. I'd dispute the charge with your credit card company or follow up. That's a lot of money! They were in the wrong and should refund your money. You can't be the only ones this happened to?

I'm also interested in your perspective of the Tom Joyner Cruise. I have heard only good things about this cruise and always wanted to take one. As someone mentioned before, the price has kept me from going, but one day...;)

MsMot

I personally do not listen to his radio show, but I do know that in the past, this cruise sailed with RCI. Not sure when that changed. I have never had a desire to go on this cruise, even when I listened to his show many years ago.

Shatima

Well Dang!!!!!!!!! I didnt know it was a Carnival Ship that he did it on.. I was listening the 1st day (well a clip) and they were talking about jamie Foxx not being able to Go on the Cruise now, but he got down with some Special Guest b 4 the ship left the Port.. I cant wait to read this.. I have Always wanted to go on one with them..

But Now Im Torned in between Steve Harvey Show in VEGAS baby.. Hoodie Awards (well they change the nake now) But Im really Proud they both are doig the damm thing :)

Thanks again for taking time out to do this Review.. Hope to c some pix :)

I didn't realize they had it early or switched ships:rolleyes:

This is the first year that they have sailed with Carnival. They previously used RCCL as indicated from other posters. This is also the first year of doing it in April.

3,000+ Club

Wow. I don't know anyone that's ever been on the Tom Joyner cruise, so I'm looking forward to reading the rest. I've never really had a desire to go, but I know they get hyped up so much and seem like a lot of fun. I'm assuming they chartered the entire ship, right? I went to their website to see which ship you all were on (Carnival Glory). I think the first red flag for me might be that they have Private Island listed on the itinerary instead of Half Moon Cay. I know most people haven't heard of HMC and they likely did that so people wouldn't be asking where the heck is that, but still, as a formality on their website, I think it should have been listed. And good grief those prices! $2,400 per person for an interior on the riviera deck! YIKES!!!! You have every right to be upset about the wristband issue. I would for sure be writing a letter to him or someone up his chain to complain. Very interesting review. Please post more soon.

Shatima - I have done the "neighborhood awards" a few years and had a very good time. If you go, definitely stay at The Hotel. Less crowded and beautiful suites.

Delta Dear

I have a friend who was on this cruise. I'll have to see how her experience was. She goes every year, I think.

She's not on CC, so I'll just share her general impression.

Cannot wait to hear the rest of this review! I've seen so many pics and I was wondering about the cost and wishing I had booked! Thank you for sharing your review so far.

Albrin1914

Man, I wanted to do one of those but those prices were a bit steep for me. I'm looking forward to reading more of your review, as it sounds now, I can nix this sailing off my to do list. I'll wait to read more before doing so.

Seago2

Wow, that's a crazy price and I definitely want to hear more about the cruise as a whole. I would dispute the charge for the club wristband. That's a lot of money. I used to listen to TJMS every morning for years.

Cruzinbabe06

Cruzinbabe06

I would love to do this cruise one day.

I've heard nothing but good things about it. And, yes this is the first year they sailed on Carnival. Wonder why they jumped cruise lines?

That's a very large event to keep organized. You feel duped when you pay extra money for something and you didn't receive it. I really hope in all you had a good time.

Thanks for taking the time to post your review.

Looking forward to hearing about this cruise since this is not mentioned much on the boards. Especially on the Carnival Board.

Thanks for posting! I'm not a TJ fan but listen to his show occassionally. I was tempted to take the cruise this year because I'm an Earth, Wind & Fire fan, but the price shut that notion down really quick.

Bottom line is you didn't get what you paid for, though. I'd dispute the charge on my credit card, report it to the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney General's office, for starters. $500-$800 is a lot of money (for me, anyway) to give away and at the very least, you deserve a reimbursement for services you didn't receive. No way in blazes should you, as the customer, have to go find a staff member to fix problems they should be handling.

I'm looking forward to reading more.

I am not a huge TJ supporter but do you all realized that this cruise is a charity event hence the inflated prices. I also don't like confusion and unfilled promises but seriously disputing a charge with the CC company for a charity event is a bit harsh.

Writing a letter to the foundation would be a better route.

I'm also glad to see this review. I've always wanted to enjoy the ship board entertainment on the Tom Joyner cruises but the cost always kept me away! It truly is a great benefit for the colleges/universities which are supported by the TJMS yearly cruises. I would also like to know why this year's cruise was with CCL and not RCI. Can't wait to read the rest of your review!!

I get what you're saying, but is it okay for a charity to collect money and not render services promised simply because it's a charity? Eventually that line of thinking is going to cost them and they may not get all the support they desire because of a bad rep.

I could be wrong, but I can totally see the foundation saying they didn't organize the cruise, the TJS did and that's who they should talk to. But I agree a letter to the foundation (and "cc-ing" them on any other correspondence you send out regarding this situation) is appropriate.

Re-loving the alien.

Huge Bowie fan but this is giving me fresh impetus to go back to some of the things I’ve skipped over recent years; including Never Let Me Down, Heroes side 2, Baal and I can’t believe I’m admitting this, Lodger. Keep going fellas, this is important work! I’m a happy Welshman listening from The Hague.

Join The Gang

First of all - you guys have the coolest Dad :) Secondly - I’ve been a fan of DB since I heard Starman in 1972 ! It’s scary to think his music has been in my life for so long. Hardly a week goes by where i don’t play some Bowie. My favourite album by anyone is Low ( and Art Decade is my favourite track on Side 2 - just saying :)) I’ve been looking for a podcast like this for ages. I did find a couple of interesting ones but none that really satisfied the itch, so I gave up hunting. Then one day, not long ago, this popped up as a recommendation on my iPad and I picked a random episode (STS). Straight away, I knew this was the podcast i had been seeking and I’m making my way through the back catalogue of episodes, taking my time and savouring each and every one. These guys know their stuff and their passion shines through. I’m really looking forward to albums like Never Let Me Down (I love it) So, I thoroughly recommend this. I’m just off to listen to the first couple of episodes. I like the debut album so I hope the lads are nice about it. 10/10

Saturn's moon Enceladus top target for ESA

Saturn's moon Enceladus top target for ESA

A fresh, icy crust hides a deep, enigmatic ocean. Plumes of water burst through cracks in the ice, shooting into space. An intrepid lander collects samples and analyzes them for hints of life.

ESA has started to turn this scene into a reality, devising a mission to investigate an ocean world around either Jupiter or Saturn. But which moon should we choose? What should the mission do exactly? A team of expert scientists has delivered their findings.

The mission would follow Juice, LISA and NewAthena as the first "large-class" mission of Voyage 2050, ESA's long-term plan for space science activities. Its overarching theme—"moons of the giant solar system planets"—was chosen back in 2021. To translate this theme into more concrete mission concepts, ESA selected a committee of top planetary scientists to pool their knowledge and expertise.

Their task? To analyze the scientific merits of visiting various moons of Jupiter or Saturn, and help ESA map roads towards innovative technical solutions that would make such a mission possible.

Scientific priorities were set out as part of the Voyage 2050 recommendations: The mission should focus on the habitability of an ocean world by investigating the links between its interior and its surroundings, as well as searching for signs of past or present life, and seeking to identify life-enabling chemistry at the surface.

"The mission concepts that we have recommended would provide tremendous scientific return, driving forward our knowledge, and would be fundamental for the successful detection of biosignatures on icy moons ," says Dr. Zita Martins, astrobiologist at Instituto Superior Técnico, who chaired the team of planetary scientists.

"I am very happy to have been part of this process, seeing first-hand the early steps that will potentially lead to the investigation of the moons of the giant planets by ESA. The search for habitable conditions and for signatures of life in the solar system is challenging from a science and technology point of view, but very exciting!"

Ambitious but achievable. Always.

Of course, big dreams must always be kept within the bounds of what is technically feasible and financially affordable. As Dr. Martin's team focused on the science, teams of engineers within ESA's Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) analyzed what kind of mission would be realistic considering the technologies we expect to be developed within the next two decades.

"We commissioned three CDF studies focused on the most promising moons: Jupiter's Europa and Saturn's Enceladus and Titan," elaborates Dr. Frederic Safa, head of ESA's Future Missions Department. "The team of scientists worked closely with the CDF engineers on the objectives of each study. The outcomes helped pin down what can be done with the resources that we will have in the 2040s."

Saturn's moon Enceladus top target for ESA

Aiming for transformational science, considering the characteristics of each moon and future planned missions to Jupiter and Saturn's ocean worlds, the scientists identified Saturn's moon Enceladus as the most compelling target, followed by Saturn's moon Titan and then Jupiter's moon Europa.

No space agency has ever landed on little Enceladus. And yet it has enormous potential for new science, particularly in the realm of habitability. It is generally accepted that there are three conditions for a 'habitable environment' to potentially support life as we know it: the presence of liquid water, a source of energy, and a specific set of chemical elements.

Enceladus checks all three boxes. The plumes that spew through its icy crust are rich in organic compounds, some of which are key for life. The ocean also seems to hold a powerful source of chemical energy that could fuel living organisms.

The impact of such a mission could be enormous It would offer Europe—once more—a unique front seat in solar system science. "An investigation into signs of past or present life around Saturn has never been achieved before. It would guarantee ESA leadership in planetary science for decades to come," says ESA Director of Science, Prof. Carole Mundell.

Standing on the shoulders of giants

Building upon ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) and the NASA/ESA/ASI Cassini-Huygens mission to visit Saturn and land on Titan, this new mission would carry next-generation instrumentation capable of revealing unimaginable secrets of an ocean world such as Enceladus. ESA could launch such a mission in the early 2040s with Ariane 6, arriving at its destination around a decade later. In the style of Juice and Cassini-Huygens, the mission—if targeted towards Enceladus or Titan—could perform a fantastic tour in the Saturn system, encompassing flybys of other puzzling moons, before a grand-finale close-up investigation of the chosen target.

To significantly advance European ambitions in planetary science, the team judged that the new mission must collect a sample of the ocean world, either using a lander or by flying close to the surface to sweep up material ejected by plumes. A mission to Enceladus would touch down at the moon's thinly crusted south pole to collect ejected ocean material, whereas a mission to Titan should focus on lake sediments. In either case, an onboard laboratory equipped with miniaturized and highly sensitive instruments would unravel the biochemical secrets of the collected material.

Like Juice and Cassini-Huygens, our mission to the "moons of the giant solar system planets" will engage Europe's foremost engineering and industrial capabilities to cope with enormous challenges, including limited solar energy, wildly varying temperatures and communication over huge distances. ESA is already overcoming similar challenges with Juice.

The new mission will boost European competences in many scientific and technological fields, including in-orbit assembly, operating in extreme environments, landing technologies, and novel scientific instrumentation. All these revolutionary technologies will have a wide range of applications, well beyond ESA's space science program.
