Duff & Phelps was engaged by Certares-owned Travel Leaders Group to provide corporate finance advice on the acquisition of Barrhead Travel. Our travel M&A team has worked with Certares and Travel Leaders Group for a number of years. Duff & Phelps provided buy-side advice, European industry insights and on the ground support in the UK to guide them through the process.

Ninan Chacko, CEO, Travel Leaders Group, commented: “Thank you to the Duff & Phelps M&A team for their advice and assistance on this transaction. Their local presence and sector knowledge in the UK travel market was very important in getting this transaction completed.”

Henry Wells, managing director at Duff & Phelps, commented: “Travel Leaders Group is a high growth business with a strong global vision. As it further expands into Europe, Barrhead Travel is a great addition to the Travel Leaders Group family and will flourish as part of the family of brands. Travel Leaders Group has reached an agreement to acquire Barrhead Travel Group, one of Scotland’s largest retail travel companies and one of the largest in the UK.

The company will become part of Travel Leaders Group’s growing presence in the UK and around the world. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter.

“Barrhead is a great addition to our family of brands. It’s an innovative, award-winning travel business that is on a trajectory for continued growth,” said Travel Leaders Group CEO Ninan Chacko, CTC. “From its high-touch retail travel superstores to its online presence, Barrhead offers personalised attention, technology tools, highly-trained travel specialists and a wide range of travel products and services.”

He continued, “Bill and Sharon Munro have devoted their careers to building this extraordinary business. We’re pleased that the Munro family is entrusting the future of Barrhead, its employees, agents and customers to our organisation. We’re excited about this chance to expand our presence in Scotland and the UK overall and the opportunities this affords both companies.”

Barrhead will retain its brand identity within the Travel Leaders UK portfolio and its chief executive Sharon Munro will continue to manage the business. Her father and company founder, Bill Munro, will serve in a strategic advisory role as chairman of the Barrhead division within Travel Leaders Group. No major changes in operations are anticipated.

“Joining with Travel Leaders Group will give us the resources to expand into additional markets, access to new technology and the ability to innovate,” said Sharon Munro (pictured). “This agreement creates exciting new prospects for both our enterprises.”

Bill Munro added: “This is great news for our staff, our customers and our suppliers.”

Mr Chacko added: “Barrhead’s successful ‘click, call and visit’ model and its cadre of highly-trained travel professionals has positioned the company as a leading multi-channel retailer for cruises, custom vacations and business travel.”

Once the transaction is finalised, Travel Leaders UK portfolio will include Barrhead, Colletts Travel, Protravel International UK and Tzell UK. Combined, these four brands, together with ALTOUR UK, specializing in entertainment and corporate travel, and its recent merger with Travel Leaders Group Holdings, will rank among the top travel management companies in the UK.

Travel Leaders Group is one of North America’s largest travel companies – encompassing nearly one-third of all travel agents on the continent.

Colletts only strengthens our already formidable expertise in counseling luxury clientele both in the United Kingdom and throughout the world Ninan Chacko, CTC, Chief Executive Officer for Travel Leaders Group

Acquisition of Colletts Travel further strengthens already formidable positioning of Travel Leaders Group as world’s foremost luxury travel provider

New York, NY (February 1, 2017) –  Today, Travel Leaders Group is formally announcing that it has acquired United Kingdom-based Colletts Travel Limited, including its prestigious Colletts Collection. The acquisition is a concerted move designed to further enhance Travel Leaders Group’s expertise in counseling and serving affluent travelers globally. Due to its highly-valued and repeat client base, Colletts Travel will maintain its distinct brand identity within Travel Leaders UK, Travel Leaders Group’s United Kingdom operations.

According to Travel Leaders Group, the acquisition was completed on January 31, 2017. No details pertaining to the specific terms of the acquisition will be released.

Established in 1983 by Roy Collett to focus on luxury vacations in worldwide destinations, Colletts Travel has grown into one of the United Kingdom’s most respected luxury travel agencies. With annual sales of approximately $57 million, Colletts Travel is headquartered in the London suburb of Hendon, and it employs 48 staff across its three London-area offices, as well as in Lancashire.

The leadership of Colletts Travel – including Roy Collett and Michael Berlin, who each serve as Managing Directors – will report to Travel Leaders Elite Division President Gail Grimmett, who is also responsible for Protravel International and Tzell Travel Group.

“We are thrilled to welcome Colletts Travel – along with its leadership, its highly skilled luxury travel agents, and its exceptional clientele – into the Travel Leaders Group family. What attracted us to Colletts is its strong brand reputation within the UK’s luxury leisure market,” explained Ninan Chacko, CTC, Chief Executive Officer for Travel Leaders Group. “Colletts only strengthens our already formidable expertise in counseling luxury clientele both in the United Kingdom and throughout the world.”

“Together with our Protravel and Tzell UK operations, the addition of Colletts Travel further fortifies our platform in the United Kingdom as we expand our leadership position in serving the extraordinary and sophisticated needs of ultra-high net worth leisure travelers,” added Grimmett.

“After 33 years of serving the traveling public, Michael Berlin and I decided that the best path forward to accelerate Colletts Travel’s growth was to secure the backing of a major travel company in the United States,” noted Collett. “As the largest traditional travel agency enterprise in North America, Travel Leaders Group will dramatically heighten the array of offerings we can provide to our discerning clientele.”

Travel Leaders UK now consists of Colletts Travel, Protravel International UK and Tzell UK, which are among the UK’s leading travel companies that employ both independent and in-house travel agents. Combined, the three brands together are ranked among the top 20 travel management companies in the UK.
