UC applications rise for fall 2024, with gains in diversity and transfer applicants

The University of California drew a quarter-million applications for fall 2024, an increase over last year powered by a significant rebound in community college transfer applicants and more in-state residents of increasingly diverse backgrounds, according to preliminary data released Wednesday.

The number of California first-year applications increased to 134,053, a 1.4% rise over last year’s preliminary data, with gains at eight of nine UC undergraduate campuses. UCLA, UC San Diego and UC Irvine drew the most first-year applications from Californians, while UC Berkeley’s numbers dropped slightly over last year.

Applications from out-of-state residents fell, possibly a reflection of state goals focused on keeping more seats for Californians. Texas sent the most applicants, but a state-by-state breakdown showed no pattern of higher interest from students in red states that have adopted strict antiabortion laws after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down its Roe vs. Wade ruling in 2022. International students increased slightly.

But the most eye-catching development — one hailed by campus admission leaders — was the robust growth in transfer applications, which had fallen significantly during the last two years as community college enrollments plunged during the pandemic and its aftermath. Transfer applications grew to 43,543, a 10.6% increase over last year, including 34,668 from California Community College students.

Latinos were again the largest group of applicants, at 39%, with Asian Americans at 30%, whites at 20%, Black students at 7%, American Indians at 1% and Pacific Islanders at less than 1%. Black applicants saw the strongest growth, increasing in number by 7%, with gains of 2.5% for Latinos and 1.9% for American Indians, the term UC uses in its demographic data.

UC’s ability to continue increasing historically underrepresented student groups without race-based affirmative action — banned in California in 1996 and struck down by the high court last year — is due to its comprehensive review process, campus efforts to create partnerships with community groups embedded in underserved neighborhoods and robust financial aid that reduces the cost of college, the university said in a statement.

UC also drew slightly more low-income applicants for first-year seats, growing to 40% compared with 39.9% last year. The number of students receiving federal Pell Grants had dropped for several years, raising concerns that students with the greatest financial need were not able to access a UC education even if well-qualified.

“We are pleased to see such an outstanding pool of students from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences,” UC President Michael V. Drake said in a statement. “Prospective students and their families recognize that a degree from the University of California sets them up for lifelong career success. The increase in applications underscores the quality of the educational experience and the long-term social mobility a UC education can provide underrepresented students.”

California effort to crack down on legacy and donor admissions could hit USC, Stanford

A new California legislative effort to ban state financial aid to colleges and universities that give admissions preferences to children of alumni and donors could hit USC, Stanford.

Feb. 29, 2024

Although UC campuses have pledged to increase seats for new California students as part of their compact with Gov. Gavin Newsom, the higher application numbers may well result in lower admission rates — especially at the most competitive campuses. In 2023, for instance, UCLA admitted 9.5% of California first-year applicants and UC Berkeley, 15.1%.

Jim Rawlins, associate vice chancellor of enrollment management at UC San Diego, raised that concern even as he said he was gratified by the growing interest in his campus.

“I never want to celebrate an increase in any way that’s mindless of the fact that it means we will very likely have to deny more people as a result,” he said. “One of the main things that happens with that phenomenon is that fear of not getting in tends to disproportionately discourage students who are first generation to go to college or low income or at disadvantaged, lower-funded schools. And we just hate to see those students not apply.”

Still, UC San Diego received more first-year applications from Californians of Black, Latino and American Indian descent for fall 2024 over last year. Overall, the campus saw gains in California first-year applicants to 88,392 applications, up 4.1%, and transfers to 19,371, a 12.3% increase.

The turnaround in transfer applications fueling the applicant growth reflected not only the pandemic recovery and a rebound in community college enrollments but also growing efforts to improve pathways from community colleges to UC campuses. All campuses drew more transfer applications for fall 2024 over last year except UC Merced, with UCLA, UC Irvine, UC San Diego and UC Berkeley all receiving more than 20,000 each.

Several UC campuses extended their transfer application deadline this year by six weeks to Jan. 15. UC Santa Cruz received 600 to 800 additional applications while UC San Diego drew as many as 900 more because of the extension, campus officials said.

UC also worked with the California Community Colleges system to receive contact information for all two-year students interested in transferring to a four-year institution, allowing campuses to reach out to them earlier in the admission cycle.

UC Santa Cruz, for instance, emailed about 500,000 potential transfer students last fall to congratulate them on their educational journeys and offer help in course planning, financial aid issues and other support, said Michelle Whittingham, associate vice chancellor of enrollment management. The number of transfer applications overall grew to 12,218 — a 9.6% increase — for fall 2024 while those for first-year seats increased to 71,697, a 4.2% rise.

“Seeing the resiliency of the students as those transfer numbers start to recover is really exciting,” Whittingham said.

At UCLA, the rebound in transfer applicants was also applauded as a standout development this year. The Westwood campus topped all campuses in transfer applications — 27,150, a 13.3% increase. UCLA also drew the largest number of first-year applications — 146,250, all but assuring its position as the most sought-after university in the nation. California residents applying to UCLA grew slightly to 92,290, a 1.7% increase. The number of applicants from out of state and overseas declined slightly.

“Our goal overall, especially as it relates to freshmen, isn’t about getting more applications — we’ve got plenty,” said Gary Clark, UCLA associate vice chancellor of enrollment management. “It’s more of a focus on the makeup of the applicant pool. Seeing the community colleges starting to rebound and build back their enrollment to getting close to pre-pandemic levels and then seeing that really show up in our applicant pool this year, is exciting.”

UC Davis saw robust growth in applicants in all categories. The number of first-year applicants increased to 98,834, a 4.4% increase, and transfers grew to 16,515, a 12% rise. Officials have said that one recruiting pitch is the area’s greater affordability compared with other UC campuses in the Bay Area and California coastal areas, some of the state’s priciest real-estate markets.

UC Irvine’s total applications for first-year seats grew to 122,661, up by 1.3%. Transfer applicants grew to 25,187, a 14% increase.

“It was a real strong year for us, and that’s really not just a testament to the hard work of our staff, but testament of the growing reputation of the campus,” said Dale Leaman, executive director of undergraduate admissions.

Irvine specifically sought to raise its profile in areas outside California, with targeted recruitment in the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast. Officials not only played up the campus’ academic and research excellence, but also the area’s safety and amenities — such as nearby Disneyland and beautiful Orange County beaches, said Bryan Jue, senior director of outreach and communications.

At UC Santa Barbara, first-year applicants from California grew to 75,523 but declined slightly for nonresident students, amounting to a total 110,236. Transfer applicants overall grew to 18,410, an 8% rise.

Lisa Przekop, UC Santa Barbara associate director of admissions, said the full return of campus bus tours from L.A. to Santa Barbara, which were canceled during the pandemic, has helped local recruitment. Many Los Angeles high school students who have never been to Santa Barbara often think the campus is “really far away” — rather than just 90 minutes, she said.

“They can see that it wasn’t a very long bus ride, and then they get to see the campus,” she said. “Santa Barbara is one of those campuses that if you see it, it makes a big difference.”

Another notable development among this year’s applicants, Przekop said, was the steep drop in computer science majors, which declined by about 1,600 to 9,173. She said UC admissions officials told high school counselors at a conference last year that the highly competitive and rigorous field is best suited for those with a passion for it, rather than a casual interest. At UC Santa Barbara, for instance, the admission rate is only 10% for computer science majors compared with about 30% overall, she said.

UC Riverside also saw growth, receiving 57,420 applications for first-year seats and 12,042 for transfer spots. UC Merced drew 29,351 first-year applications — a 14% increase — but transfer applications declined slightly to 3,589.

“These application numbers confirm we are headed in the right direction,” Han Mi Yoon-Wu, UC associate vice provost for undergraduate admissions, said in a statement. “The University of California’s unparalleled combination of affordability and high-quality education continues to attract talented applicants.”

What does TWIN & SINGLE mean, and how does it affect tour pricing?

These terms refer to hotel room occupancy. All aspects of the tour are the exact same for each attendee, so we base the tour price on the attendee's hotel room preference. If you select TWIN, you are reserving ONE SPOT for yourself in a hotel room with one other person. The hotel room will have two beds, with one person in each bed and two people in the room in total. If you do not have a roommate request (who is a paying traveler on tour), you will be matched with a roommate. If you select SINGLE, you are reserving an entire hotel room for yourself. For this tour, TWIN accommodations are recommended, but if you would like your own room, there is a $600 upgrade charge imposed by the tour company. All tour pricing is per person.

Do I have to purchase a second tour for my parent to attend?

Yes! To attend the CA College Tour, each attendee must purchase a tour by filling out an enrollment form individually with their personal information. Both student & parent must fill out their own enrollment form to sign up. Parents are allowed to accompany their students on this tour, and they would participate in all aspects of the tour just as every other member does. For parents planning to attend, please note this is a dry tour, and alcohol consumption will not be permitted during the day's tour programming.

If a parent and/or guest wants to attend the tour with their member, which room option should we select as a group?

Each attendee (parents and guests included) must fill out their own individual enrollment form to attend the tour. Please note tour prices are per person regardless of group size. Adults can only be placed in a room with students they are attending the tour with. If a parent and a student would like to attend the tour and room together, the student would fill out an enrollment form and select TWIN, and the parent would fill out their own enrollment form (with their information as both the traveler and emergency contact) and select TWIN. If the student does not want to room with their parent and would like to be paired with other students attending the tour, the parent must select SINGLE, and then the student can select any rooming option.

If you are planning on attending with a group of 3 or 4 and would like to all share a room, please email [email protected], and we will make an exception for your group to stay together.

If a parent and/or guest wants to attend the tour with their member, do they have to use Non-Member pricing?

No! As an NSHSS member benefit, members and their guests can use the NSHSS member tour pricing. Please note tour prices are per person. Non-member pricing is reserved for students unaffiliated with NSHSS who would like to attend the tour.

Does NSHSS provide transportation to San Diego?

Each attendee is responsible for their own transportation arrangements. NSHSS does not assist with airfare, and flights are not included in this tour price. With NSHSS members all over the country, it would be too difficult to facilitate flights for every member coming from different airports at different times. Some members are also within driving distance and don't need flights, so we are able to offer a lower price for everyone without flights included.

What is included in the tour package?

The package includes hotel accommodations for the week, charter bus transportation, all meals on tour days, guided tours and activities, a full-time tour director, refreshments on the bus, parent information packets, and all gratuities.

What is included in each university campus visit?

The CA College Tour transforms this experience into an enriching and exciting summer adventure in which students participate in campus tours, meet with admissions representatives, and receive materials to help evaluate each school. Tour participants are also presented with strategies to get the most out of their future college visits. Students learn what questions they should be asking of campus officials, how to compare schools to one another, and what factors are most important for their college selection process. The university's student ambassadors will lead most tours, but others may be led by current university students, depending on the campus. Where available, campus tours could also include an information meeting provided by admissions office staff.

What should I expect in regard to the intensity of this tour?

This a traveling tour with a very tight schedule. We are fitting ten university stops into five days while traveling up the coast, so a good bit of time will also be spent on the road. We will be doing A LOT of walking – anywhere from 10,000-20,000 steps and at least 5 miles PER DAY. We will be outside a lot, and it will most likely be hot since it is summer in California. Students are encouraged to pack comfortable clothes and shoes, sunglasses, hats, sunscreen, portable fans, and some snacks to keep with them during the day or to have at night in their hotel rooms. The hotels will also have snack bars with snacks for purchase, but it will be important to have non-perishable/non-melting snacks on hand during the day. When we leave the hotel in the morning, we will not be returning until we check into a new hotel at the end of the day. The days will be very long, but the experience will be worth it!!

Will there be meals provided during the tour?

NSHSS will provide a welcome dinner reception upon attendees' arrival in San Diego on Day 1. On each full tour day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided. Snacks and drinks will also be provided at various points on the bus, but make sure to bring some snacks or money to buy some snacks if you get hungry easily! On departure day, attendees can enjoy breakfast at the hotel before making their way to the airport.

What if I live close by and don't need a hotel room?

The NSHSS CA College Tour is only sold as an all-inclusive tour package, so, unfortunately, we cannot remove the hotel's cost from the tour price as that is a large part of the package. Keeping all tour participants at the same hotel makes it easier to keep everyone accounted for overnight so we don't run into logistical issues in transportation to and from the hotel and daily activities. This is also a traveling tour, so attendees are staying at a new hotel each night. The package, however, does not include airfare as members are flying in from all over the country, so that's great you are so close and won't have to worry about purchasing travel arrangements!

What does arrival day look like once I get to the airport?

Upon arrival in San Diego, tour staff will meet attendees at the airport baggage claim. Students are encouraged to book flights arriving between 1 - 3 PM PST for minimal wait time. Once the entire tour group arrives, we will load onto the bus and head to the first hotel to check in!

Do you offer financial assistance for this tour?

As NSHSS tours are entirely optional to our members, we currently do not have any financial assistance programs for our tours at this time. However, payment arrangements are very flexible to allow participants to create their own payment plan and pay the tour fee in increments of their choosing at any time and as many times as they would like up until the final due date. We send all of our invoices through PayPal, which also offers several payment plan options. Please be sure to check out our   NSHSS Scholarships page  for multiple scholarship opportunities, where many of the scholarships are open to both high school and college students. Keep an eye out as new scholarships are always being added!

  • Airlines that serve SBA are Alaska, American, United, Southwest, and Delta.
  • Additional flights are available via LAX, or via Hollywood Airport in Burbank. Santa Barbara is just over 100 miles from each of these airports.
  • The Santa Barbara Airbus is a convenient way to get to UCSB from LAX for those who do not wish to rent a car. The airbus is inexpensive and offers WiFi.
  • If driving to Santa Barbara (perhaps via rental car from LAX), please email [email protected] for help in securing a parking pass for campus.
  • UCSB offers parking reciprocity for faculty from other UC campuses. UC Berkeley faculty should be able to use their parking passes when visiting UCSB. Note that you will need to apply for reciprocity, and approval might take a few days.
  • Park in Lot 12 or Lot 14 if you have been given a VIP pass. If you need to purchase a pass, park in Lot 18.

Restaurants

The conference provides a continental breakfast and lunch on June 20 and June 21. Santa Barbara offers a good number of nice restaurants per capita. Here are a few of our favorite places to consider for dinner. None of them have any affiliation with ACTION.

  • Pizzeria Da Michele  offers wood-fired pizzas and classic pasta dishes.
  • Olio e Limone , also in downtown Santa Barbara, was the venue for the ACTION Institute's SIP retreat dinner.
  • Olio Pizzeria , another pizza joint, is adjacent to Olio e Limone.
  • Ca Dario  is a long-standing Italian restaurant with locations in downtown Santa Barbara and Goleta, near the Hilton Garden Inn.
  • Bettina  is another one of the best, local Italian restaurants; but you'll need a reservation.
  • Los Arroyos  is a Santa Barbara classic, with locations downtown and Goleta, near the Leta and the South Coast Inn.
  • Los Agaves  is another SB classic, and also with locations downtown and in Goleta.
  • Carlitos  is similar to Los Arroyos and Los Agaves, but is a little higher-end.
  • Flor de Maiz  is another popular Mexican restaurant. They have a great location near the beach.
  • Freebirds  Burritos, are world famous. This is the original location, still in operation.
  • Corazon Comedor  specializes in Mexican breakfasts. Perhaps stop by on Saturday morning?

Californian/Mediterranean

  • Barbareno  is well-known Santa Barbara restaurant with a unique, memorable menu.
  • The Lark  is always happening, located in Santa Barbara's Funk Zone.
  • Mesa Verde  has an entirely vegan menu.
  • Milk and Honey  is a popular place for tapas.
  • The Palace Grill offers memorable food in a fun environment. Make a reservation, and be sure to order the bread pudding for dessert.
  • Lure Fish House , located in La Cumbre Shopping Center, is easy to find and has plenty of parking.
  • Santa Barbara Fish House  is a popular spot near East Beach and the Funk Zone.
  • The Boathouse , overlooking Hendry's Beach, is great for brunch.
  • Arigato Sushi and  Edomasa Sushi are two very popular sushi restaurants. But honestly, you can't go wrong with sushi in this town. Santa Barbara is famous for its uni.
  • Meet Up  has been regarded by many as one of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in town.
  • Sama Sama , serves South East Asian dishes family style, and delicious.

Burgers and Beer

  • Topa Topa Brewery has a great tap room and some local bites.
  • Mesa Burger offers hand crafted burgers with a flair for gourmet.
  • The Habit is a national burger chain that started in Santa Barbara (and tastes better here, too).

More things to do

And with all of the great restaurants to sample, you might want to stay in Santa Barbara through the weekend. What will you do after the ACTION ends?

  • Take a walking wine tour in SB's Funk Zone or visit the Santa Ynez Valley.
  • Stop in at the Red Piano for some live entertainment.
  • Soho also has live entertainment seven nights a week, and great food, too!
  • Visit to a club or micro-brewery in downtown Santa Barbara.
  • Head to the beach.
  • Go for a hike at Lizard Mouth, Cold Springs Trail, or Toro Canyon Park (easy trails with great views).
  • Find more at the Santa Barbara website .
