Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 - Finished April 20th, 2023

The final season of Star Trek: Picard has concluded, and the fans already want more. There have been calls for a spinoff titled Star Trek: Legacy , and for the franchise to bring back showrunner Terry Matalas to run it. Who knows if it'll happen, but one thing I do know is people will be talking about the success of Picard Season 3 and how it brought back together The Next Generation crew for a long time.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 - Ended August 10th, 2023

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is back for another season on Paramount+. Season 2 promised to raise the bar after its acclaimed Season 1, and so far, it’s lived up to the hype. In addition to major changes to canon and some unexpected romance , we were treated to an amazing   crossover with Lower Decks . It’s not all fun and games, though, as a rescue mission from the Gorn put a lot of lives at risk . We did see Montgomery Scott come aboard the Enterprise though, so hopefully he'll stick around in Season 3.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3- Production Underway

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds filmed Season 1 and 2 right after one another, and apparently Paramount+ was so high on the series it decided to go ahead and green light Season 3 soon after. The series was in production for a while but paused during the WGA Writers’ Strike . Production resumed and is happening alongside Star Trek: Section 31, but it's still looking like we won't see the new season until at least 2025.

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

The Next Phase

Alex Kurtzman, the executive producer in charge of Star Trek, released a statement about the current shows and the future of the Trek franchise:

“Four years ago, we made a promise to grow ‘Star Trek’ into something it had never been before, and thanks to the incredibly hard work done by our many talented showrunners, writers, and directors, along with the extraordinary support of CBS Studios and Paramount+, we’re keeping our word. Now our current shows are set up for the future as we work to build ‘Trek’s’ next phase of programming for years to come.”

“Next phase,” eh?  I wonder what that could entail.  This could mean that some of the current shows may be ending to make way for others; Picard has long been rumoured to be a limited-run series, so it may very well end after Season 3.

But what could follow?  Kurtzman has spoken about a Starfleet Academy show in early development, which could be interesting, as well as the continued development of the Section 31 series to be led by Michelle Yeoh.  Either of these shows could be on the horizon for 2023 or later.

There’s also the little matter of a new Star Trek film slated for release in December 2023.  Consistent movie universes are well established these days, with Marvel and Star Wars being the prime examples.  Star Trek has always maintained a close continuity between series and films, so perhaps the “next phase” is a Star Trek Cinematic Universe !

Maybe Kurtzman has something else up his sleeve which he can’t discuss yet?

As always, when Treksphere knows, you will too!

I enjoy all these shows, but the one I’m actually excited about is Strange New Worlds.

And that is as it should be. With the explosion of Trek content I can see the strategy is to offer up a huge variety of shows in order to avoid the over-saturation of a single type or show that led to the tepid reception of Enterprise. So it’s not a bug that a lot of viewers are not interested in one or more of these shows — it’s a feature.

A dark haired White man with pointed ears reaches for a large metal weapon.

In the age of thunderingly loud blockbusters and hyper-serial prestige television, Star Trek has struggled. The J.J. Abrams films tried to reinvent Star Trek for the mega action film era, and Star Trek: Discovery tried to reinvent it for serial TV. And others, like Picard and Lower Decks , have just tried to play to the fans with intense nostalgia and in-jokes. They’ve all been Star Trek, but they haven’t had quite the same impact as the original series or the Star Trek series of the ‘90s. Watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds feels like watching The Next Generation or Voyager or even The Original Series . It’s Star Trek updated pitch perfectly for 2022, and that’s in large part because it knows what we want: filler episodes.

The franchise is enormous at this point — as big as Star Wars or Doctor Who , but it often feels like it has been at odds with itself and kind of embarrassed by its own existence in a way those other franchises aren’t. It’s like a petulant teenager who really wants to go trick or treating with the family but doesn’t want to run into any friends in case they get made fun of.

Strange New Worlds isn’t like that. This show understands that you can be earnest and you can be goofy and you can still tell really good and entertaining stories. It's not embarrassed to exist. And, yes, a lot of that is down to a terrific cast — helmed by Anson Mount as Christopher Pike and Rebecca Romijn as his second in command, Una Chin-Riley (or Number One if you’re familiar with the original Star Trek show). But beyond a great cast appearing in a great-looking show, what’s really captivated me is how Strange New Worlds is happy to embrace the filler episode.

A dark haired White woman lies on a stretcher being checked for injuried by a blond White woman, and a dark haired Black man looks on with concern.

Filler episodes are defined as the ones not pertaining to the overarching stories in a series. They’re often episodes about downtime, or they’re the weird, funny episode in a typically dramatic show. They exist because, until streaming caught on, most TV series had 20-plus episode orders. In the same amount of time many series now turn out six to 10 episodes, writer’s rooms would typically have to turn out something closer to 22 scripts. That meant things could get weird. A lot of those 20 episodes could have serial plots: Mulder and Scully and their war against the Cigarette Smoking Man and the Consortium or the myriad “beloved doctor gets sick” plotlines on ER. But the shows would also have episodes that got experimental or silly or just plain content to not raise the stakes to “the end of the world as we know it.” Part of the reason Picard getting Borg-ified had so much impact on Star Trek: The Next Generation was because we knew this was also the nerd who liked to play a private eye on the holodeck.

As short episode orders and highly serialized plotlines became the du jour in TV, the filler episode fell out of fashion. The cast of Star Trek: Discovery is not accidentally acting out a fairy tale for the amusement of a fourth-dimensional being anytime soon. But I’d argue that the filler episode was also what distinguished TV from movies as an art form. Highly serialized shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi airing on Disney Plus feel like films, carefully partitioned out over several weeks. One of the biggest complaints about many new shows on Netflix is that they feel like overlong movies. The plot is always hustling, and we never have time to just sit with a character and get to know them.

And the appeal of TV for so long — the reason it often inspires enormous online fandoms — is because you spend so much time with these characters that you know them better than the ones you spend two hours in a theater with.

A gray-haired White man wearing yellow stands and looks at something off screen. Two women with dark hair and red shirts are seated and looking in the same direction.

Six episodes in, Strange New Worlds hasn’t been afraid to take a breath and let us just enjoy these characters — just like Trek fans used to do with previous series. So we can have an episode where Captain Pike, who learned his own tragic future on Star Trek: Discovery , tries to come to terms with it, and we can have an episode that makes the supremely goofy Gorn Kirk once wrestled a legitimately spooky threat. But we can also have an episode where everyone enjoys their day off and two characters accidentally switch bodies and negotiate some diplomatic treaties.

The show is comfortable developing the characters in a wide variety of ways while not feeling the need to always check in on some looming threat. Shows like Stranger Things could learn a lot from the more gentle plotting. Sometimes we don’t need seven episodes racing toward the end of the world. Sometimes we just need one or two — you know, so we can have time for that body-switching or “Groundhog Day” episode.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds airs new episodes every Thursday on Paramount Plus.

Paramount Plus 'Star Trek' shows all getting new episodes in 2022

‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ ‘Star Trek: Picard’ and ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ are just around the corner.

Star Trek: Discovery

Paramount Plus is going boldly into 2022, announcing new release dates for its group of Star Trek original series — Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy . In addition to release dates, four out of the five shows have also earned 10-episode season renewals from the streaming service.

The Star Trek series have become some of the flagship Paramount Plus original series , tapping into the passionate fan base with shows that focus on new and familiar characters, as well as expand into animation targeted for both adults and kids.

Star Trek: Discovery was one of the first new Star Trek original series, debuting when Paramount Plus was still CBS All Access. Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery is set to debut on Paramount Plus Feb. 10, but fans can rest assured in knowing that there will definitely be a season 5, as the show was renewed. Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp.

Star Trek: Picard is set to return for its second season on March 3. Sir Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in this original series, alongside Alison Pill, Isa Briones and Jeri Ryan. Star Trek: Picard is already in production for its third season.

The latest Star Trek original series on Paramount Plus, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have its premiere on May 5 and has already been renewed for a second season. A prequel to the original Star Trek series from the 1960s, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Etha Peck.

On the animated side, Star Trek: Lower Decks is going to return for season 3 with 10 new episodes in summer 2022. The series, featuring the voice work of Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells and Eugene Cordero, has also been renewed for a fourth season.

Star Trek: Prodigy , meanwhile, is currently in the middle of its first season’s first half, with that capping off with episode 10 on Feb. 3. The second half of season 1, featuring another 10 episodes, is expected to debut on Paramount Plus later in 2022. Following a group of teens that stumble upon a derelict Starfleet ship, Star Trek: Prodigy features the voices of Brett Gray, Rylee Alazraqui, Jason Mantzoukas and Kate Mulgrew.

All of these shows are exclusively available on Paramount Plus , which consumers can sign up for with a 30-day free trial, after which they will be charged either $4.99 per month for an ad-supported version or $9.99 per month for an ad-free version (which also includes access to their local CBS station).

Expected in early 2024 , Discovery ’s fifth season will be 10 episodes long, down from the 13 of prior seasons. In the wake of season four‘s climax earlier this year , Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led her crew in a desperate attempt to save the galaxy from a mysterious anomaly created by an extra-galactic race, ensuring peace and stability for the Federation once more... for now. As her romantic partner Book (David Ajala) pays time for his own role in a campaign to surreptitiously destroy that anomaly, we’re not sure what awaits Burnham and Discovery ’s crew just yet, but given this show, we’re sure it’ll be very, very dramatic.

The animated series aimed at younger Trek fans (and Janeway fans!) and kids at heart can be found on both Nickelodeon and Paramount+. Fans are still waiting to hear if Prodigy season two will surface on a different outlet .

Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today!   Ex Astris, Scientia!”

Upcoming (movie) : Star Trek: Section 31

Image for article titled Star Trek Release Dates: When to Expect All the New and Returning Shows

Announced as a TV series back in 2019 as a spinoff for fan-favorite Discovery guest star Michelle Yeoh, this plunge into the seediest side of Starfleet—the shadowy spy organization Section 31 first introduced in Deep Space Nine— is now planned as a Paramount+ film .

Newly minted Oscar winner Yeoh will return as former emperor of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire, Phillipa Georgiou, now turned into a kinder, but still kickass person by her time with Michael Burnham. “I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” Yeoh said in a statement. “ Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”

Written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Section 31 will start production later this year, and eventually come to Paramount+.

Although it only lasted for three seasons in the 1960s, the original Star Trek has become one of the most influential TV series---and pieces of science fiction in any medium---of all time. Creator Gene Roddenberry's utopian vision focuses on exploration rather than conflict, as the starship Enterprise seeks out "new life and new civilizations." Led by William Shatner's hotheaded Capt. James T. Kirk, Leonard Nimoy's logical Vulcan Mr. Spock, and DeForest Kelley's irascible Dr. McCoy, Star Trek remains a sci-fi gold standard.

Seasons 1-3 of Star Trek are streaming on Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Thanks to the popularity of Star Trek reruns, NBC brought back Gene Roddenberry and many of the show's writers and actors for this animated version, which lasted for two seasons in the 1970s. It follows the continuing adventures of the Enterprise crew and has been considered an extension of the original series, with characters and concepts that later made their way into live-action. The animation may be rudimentary, but the stories are every bit as thoughtful and layered as the episodes of the original series.

Following the continued success of Star Trek reruns and theatrical films, creator Gene Roddenberry launched a new series with a new Enterprise crew, set even further in the future. Starring Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, The Next Generation continues Roddenberry's focus on a harmonious future, while expanding on alien races and galactic regions introduced in the original series. Co-starring Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, and more, The Next Generation has become every bit as iconic as its predecessor, setting the stage for decades of Trek to come.

Seasons 1-7 of Star Trek: The Next Generation are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Overlapping with the end of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine is the first Star Trek series to take place away from the Enterprise, set on a space station located in a volatile area of the galaxy. Avery Brooks leads the series as Capt. Benjamin Sisko, overseeing an unpredictable crew of Starfleet officers and alien allies, along with an entire station's worth of residents and businesses. In its later seasons, Deep Space Nine introduced serialized storytelling to Trek for the first time, gaining a reputation as the darkest and most mature Trek series to date.

Returning to the exploratory missions of a starship, Voyager takes Star Trek into an entirely new quadrant of the galaxy. The crew of the titular vessel is transported via a mysterious energy wave into an area of space where Starfleet has never been. Capt. Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) must lead her crew on a long journey home, while navigating the unfamiliar threats in this strange new region. Voyager expands the scope of Star Trek's universe while introducing fan-favorite characters like the holographic Doctor (Robert Picardo) and the former Borg Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

Seasons 1-7 of Star Trek: Voyager are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A prequel set in the years before the formation of the galaxy-spanning United Federation of Planets, Enterprise takes place on the starship Enterprise a century before it's occupied by Capt. Kirk and his crew. The primarily human crew is led by Capt. Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), as inhabitants of Earth are just beginning to explore the galaxy and encounter some of Star Trek's familiar alien races. Enterprise features a more action-oriented focus than previous Trek series, setting the tone for Trek series and movies to come, and its later seasons are driven by long-term serialized stories.

Seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Enterprise are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

After a dormant period of more than a decade following the cancellation of Enterprise, Discovery brings Star Trek into the streaming era with another prequel. Set after Enterprise but before the original series, Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, the science officer on the starship Discovery. The first two seasons explore the early days of the Federation and revisit many classic Trek themes and characters. In later seasons, both the starship and the show are thrust forward hundreds of years into the future, truly going boldly where no Trek has gone before.

Seasons 1-4 of Star Trek: Discovery are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

In conjunction with Star Trek's streaming revival, this anthology of bite-size episodes provides supplemental stories for the new Trek era. Some are standalone pieces highlighting minor characters or side stories from Star Trek: Discovery, while others tie more closely to ongoing plots from Discovery (and later Star Trek: Picard as well). It's another way for Star Trek's creators to illustrate their expansive universe of galactic space exploration.

All episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Patrick Stewart reprises his Star Trek: The Next Generation role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in a series set 20 years after Picard's last Star Trek appearance. The retired Picard returns to active duty with a new mission and a new crew, in a slower, more character-driven story than other Trek series. In addition to Stewart, actors from other past Trek series, including Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan, make appearances, as Picard struggles to find his place in a changed Starfleet that no longer reflects his values.

Seasons 1-2 of Star Trek: Picard are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

The first animated Star Trek series since the 1970s is also the first overtly comedic Trek series, focusing on a group of lower-level recruits who do all the grunt work on intergalactic voyages. Set around the end of the Next Generation/Deep Space Nine/Voyager era, Lower Decks takes place on the Cerritos, a Starfleet ship mostly assigned to minor missions. The creators combine gentle mockery with a deep love for and knowledge of Trek lore, which makes them perfect for taking the franchise down a peg.

Seasons 1-3 of Star Trek: Lower Decks are streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

Star Trek returns to animation again for this family-friendly series aimed at bringing in a younger audience. Like Star Trek: Voyager, Prodigy takes place in the remote Delta Quadrant, where a rowdy group of young aliens from a prison colony discover an abandoned Starfleet ship. They take control of the ship so they can escape their grim circumstances, in a harsh backwater beyond the reach of the United Federation of Planets. As they flee the colony's cruel overlord, they're trained in starship operations by a hologram of Voyager's legendary Kathryn Janeway (voiced by Kate Mulgrew).

Season 1 of Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, Strange New Worlds takes place on the Enterprise before Capt. Kirk took over, when it was led by Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Pike is joined by younger versions of familiar characters who've served on the Enterprise, including Spock (Ethan Peck) and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). In contrast to the heavily serialized storytelling of other modern Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds focuses primarily on single-episode stories, enhancing its throwback style.

Star Trek Chris Pine Karl Urban Zachary Quinto Simon Pegg

They’re boldly going back.

Paramount is planning to enter negotiations for “ Star Trek ” stars Chris Pine , Zachary Quinto , Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg to return to the Enterprise for their fourth tour of duty in the venerable sci-fi franchise.

The announcement was made by J.J. Abrams during the Paramount Investors Day Presentation on Feb. 15.

“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take ‘Star Trek’ into areas that you’ve just never seen before,” Abrams said. “We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper.”

The six actors first stepped into their respective iconic roles as Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Sulu and Scotty in 2009’s “Star Trek,” directed by Abrams, which reset the “Trek” timeline and allowed for the reboot to exist unencumbered from the hundreds of hours of “Trek” continuity that had come before. The actors returned in two sequels, 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness,” also directed by Abrams, and 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond,” directed by Justin Lin.

Abrams is producing the new, as-yet-untitled film through Bad Robot, with Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) directing from a screenplay by Josh Friedman (“Avatar 2”) and Cameron Squires (“WandaVision”) based on a earlier draft by Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”).

Paramount was close to bringing back this cast once before: In 2018, S.J. Clarkson (“Jessica Jones”) had signed up to direct a sequel that would have reunited Pine’s Kirk with his late father, played by Chris Hemsworth reprising his performance from the 2009 “Star Trek.” That film never materialized, however, after Paramount reportedly couldn’t close a deal with Pine and Hemsworth.

Since then, insiders say the studio has done market research to determine audience interest in the rebooted cast, given the long wait period between “Beyond” — which lost money for Paramount — and a prospective new “Trek” film. Execs determined that there was still lasting audience enthusiasm for Pine, Quinto and the rest of the cast in their established roles, which allowed the studio to feel comfortable with moving forward with bringing them back.

Paramount has also explored several other avenues for “Trek” features, none of which seem to have ultimately borne fruit. Quentin Tarantino reportedly cooled on a “Star Trek” script he was pursuing with “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith. In late 2019, Paramount tapped “Fargo” and “Legion” creator Noah Hawley to write and direct a “Trek” movie that Hawley planned to feature new actors playing new characters. But when Emma Watts became president of the Paramount Motion Picture Group a few months later, insiders say she paused all “Trek” development, including Hawley’s film , to decide how best to move forward with one of the studio’s crown jewel franchises. With Watts’ departure from Paramount in September, it’s unclear what the current “Trek” film portends for other development for the franchise, including a screenplay by “Fear the Walking Dead” co-executive producer Kalinda Vazquez .

Bringing the 2009 “Trek” cast back could prove a challenge given they’ve all had busy schedules since “Beyond.” Pine added the “Wonder Woman” franchise to his resume and he’ll next appear in Olivia Wilde’s thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” and the black-ops film “Violence of Action.” Quinto headlined the AMC series “NOS4A2,” and starred in the Broadway revival of “The Boys in the Band” and its 2020 Netflix film adaptation. Saldana continued her run as Gamora in several Marvel Studios films, including “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “Avengers: Endgame”; she’ll star in “Avatar 2” this year and in “Guardians Vol. 3” in 2023. Urban appeared in 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and he’ll continue his performance as Billy Butcher on Season 3 of Amazon’s “The Boys” in June. Cho starred in acclaimed indies “Columbus” and “Searching,” and he starred in Netflix’s live-action adaption of the anime series “Cowboy Bebop.” And Pegg starred with Nick Frost on Amazon’s horror comedy series “Truth Seekers,” and he’ll reprise his role as Benji in “Mission: Impossible 7” in 2023.

One member of the 2009 “Trek” cast, however, sadly cannot join them. Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov, died in an accident in June 2016, a month before “Beyond” opened in theaters. At that film’s premiere at San Diego Comic Con, the cast, filmmakers and invited guests sat in a full minute of silence in tribute to the late actor.

Na tohle jsem přesně čekal. Star Trek se starými známými postavami. Do naší známé posádky přibyla i Uhura. ( 16.07.2022 )

Dal sem všehovšudy 8 dílů, ten osmej už byl poslední, páč sledovat vesmírnou maškarádu, to mě uplně nebere... Starej Star Trek vůbec neznám, ani filmy, ani seroš. Znám vlastně jen 3 díly z těch novejch filmů... Tohle  naprosto postrádá akci a napětí. Sice e tady pěkná spousta zajímavejch postav, ale že by mě bavio sledovat vesmírnou Esmeraldu, to není uplně potřeba. ( 09.07.2022 )

No kazdopadne uvidim dal, snad se to casem zlepsi (doufam). ( 27.12.2022 )

( 04.07.2023 )

Q on star trek: voyager vs. tng real difference explained by john de lancie.

Q's appearances on Star Trek: Voyager were very different from what TNG had done with him, but the biggest difference was clarified by John de Lancie.

  • Q's first appearance on Star Trek: Voyager delved into deep philosophical issues like assisted suicide, showing a more introspective side of his character.
  • Voyager intentionally changed Q's storytelling by focusing on how events affect him, different from TNG where he drove the action.
  • Voyager continued to develop Q's character in subsequent appearances by keeping him part of the storyline, enriching Star Trek lore.

This article contains brief references to suicide.

John de Lancie, who played Q in multiple Star Trek series, explained the real difference between the character in Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: The Next Generation . Q has become one of the most important and recognizable recurring characters in the Star Trek timeline since his debut in TNG 's pilot episode, "Encounter at Farpoint." An omnipotent god-like being with a wicked sense of mischief, Q has been alternately friend and foe to the main characters of shows like TNG , Voyager , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek: Picard .

Although Q is best known for his episodes on TNG , he had a memorable arc on Voyager starting with season 2, episode 18, "Death Wish." The episode's plot revolved around Quinn (Gerrit Graham), a member of the Q Continuum who wished to end his own life rather than continue to face immortality. When Quinn sought asylum with Voyager's cast of characters , Q was sent to bring him back, leading to a trial for Quinn's right to become human and fulfill his wish to die. "Death Wish" showed a very different side of Q from TNG , and for good reason.

How To Watch All Star Trek TV Shows In Timeline Order

John de lancie explained the real difference between q in star trek: voyager and tng.

In an interview with The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine , issue 6, John de Lancie discussed how Q's storyline on Voyager was intentionally made different from his appearances on TNG . De Lancie discussed how the showrunners on Voyager were concerned with making Q's arc distinct enough from how he was used on TNG to be engaging, and clarified how this new style of storytelling and the events of "Death Wish" changed Q as a character. Read de Lancie's full quote below:

"One of the things Michael [Piller] had said was that he wanted to do a Q story, not a story about how Q affects other people, but how the story affects him, and that he goes from his usual flamboyant self to someone much more introspective. You see that he's truly troubled by a philosophical and unresolvable problem."

Up until "Death Wish," Q was almost always the driving force behind an episode's action. The formula on Star Trek: TNG was that Q would show up and create a problem for Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the crew of the USS Enterprise-D that they would spend the entire episode trying to get out of. "Death Wish" allowed audiences to see a new side of Q while still keeping what made him so enjoyable . Q's mischievous nature and " flamboyant " personality were still on full display, but seeing him struggle with big issues like assisted suicide made him vastly more interesting.

Voyager Continued Its Q Story Trend With Q’s Other Series Appearances

Q and the Star Trek: Voyager cast.

Although Voyager could have returned to Q's original episode formula, it chose to stick with the new trend. Q appeared twice more during season 3, episode 11, "The Q and the Grey," and season 7, episode 19, "Q2." Both appearances not only dealt with the consequences of the events of "Death Wish," but also continued to have Q be part of the storyline rather than causing it . Even "The Q and the Grey," which seemingly started out with the TNG formula, turned into a plot where Q was just as much at the mercy of events as Voyager's crew.

This not only helped to create a cohesive story arc for Q's Voyager appearances but also changed the character significantly from how he had been on TNG . Voyager went a long way to showing that Q was more fallible than he seemed, and the episodes he was in expanded the lore of the Q Continuum much further than previous series' had , enriching the franchise exponentially. Ultimately, Star Trek: Voyager did more for Q's character development than TNG , even if he continues to be more well-known from his original appearances.

All episodes of Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: The Next Generation are available to stream on Paramount+.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.
