Snow on Richmond Peak

Tour Divide challenges a fixed course annually called the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route . Not only is the Great Divide Route a true classic, its 'primary track' is pursued with consistency by TD athletes so that year to year, finish times may always be compared directly to the record books .

The Great Divide Route is the world's longest off-pavement cycling route. It was tirelessly mapped over a 4 year span, and published in 1998 by Adventure Cycling Association, North America's premiere bicycle travel organization. The route is highlighted by long dirt roads and jeep trails that wend their way through forgotten passes of the Continental Divide . It travels through Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, and the United States of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico ( map ). By route's end a thru-rider will climb nearly 200,000 feet of vertical (equivalent to summiting Mount Everest from sea-level 7 times).

The Tour Divide: off-road cycling’s grand tour

“Anytime you take on something like this, it is good to have a healthy respect or fear for it.” -Lachlan Morton

August 28, 2023

On August 29th, Lachlan Morton will set out to ride the Tour Divide as fast as he can go.

It will be one of the hardest things the Aussie adventurer has ever done on his bike.

The Tour Divide is, in some ways, ultra-endurance cycling’s grand tour. The route travels from Banff in Canada’s Rockies, down the Continental Divide, the long ridge of mountains that splits North America’s western watershed from its east. Climbing remote snow-packed passes on logging roads, whirring under the boughs of old-growth trees on rocky singletrack, and traversing desertscapes on trails that are most often trodden by pronghorns and bighorn sheep, the course takes riders south to Antelope Wells, New Mexico on the US-Mexican border. All told, it’s 2,671 miles and 156,617 feet of elevation gain.

“It is a little bit scary,” Lachlan says. “Anytime you take on something like this, it is good to have a healthy respect or fear for it, because there are a lot of things that could go wrong and probably will go wrong. Being prepared with equipment, and also mentally, will hopefully help turn that fear into a bit more excitement. It is going to be a huge challenge, but it will be a pretty enjoyable one. The route travels through a lot of country that I haven’t seen, so I think it will be pretty special to explore all of that by bike.”

For Lachlan, this trip will be first and foremost a test of himself, a chance to explore the wilds of the North American West with respect for the lands that the continent’s native peoples have nurtured for eons, while relying on his wits and his strength. The mountain towns that he will find on the route are often days apart, so he will sometimes have to spend nights under the stars in the bivy sack that he will strap to his bike. He will filter water from alpine streams and carry what food he can scrounge from rural shops and gas stations, mindful that it doesn’t attract the attention of cougars or grizzly bears. Some riders take two months to ride the distance. Some do it in two weeks. The course record is held by ultracycling legend Mike Hall, who managed to complete the ride in 13 days, 22 hours, and 51 minutes.

Lachlan wants to see how fast he can do the ride, while making sure he gets enough rest at night, so it doesn’t become an exercise in sleep deprivation.

Mike Hall (2016): 13 days, 22 hours, 51 minutes

As soon as he started bikepacking, the Tour Divide captured Lachlan's imagination.

“It is probably the most famous off-road bike-packing route in the world, so once I started getting into doing some bike packing, it was straight on the bucket list of one that I wanted to do one day,” Lachlan says. “I have been trying to find the right moment to do it for the last few years and it has just never worked out timewise, but there is just a little window in the calendar this year that I think I can go and ride it. The basic reason is just that I want to experience the route.”

The route was first mapped by the Adventure Cycling Association. One of the men responsible was Mac McCoy, an American runner and cross-country skier from Montana who discovered mountain-biking in the mid 1980s. He and one of his college buddies would head out into the wilds for days at a time on the first fat-tire bikes that Cannondale built. Inspired by the likes of Mike and Dan Moe, who had first hike-a-biked the Continental Divide in 1984, and the Rough Stuff Fellowship, a British club devoted to off-road adventure cycling founded in the 1950s, McCoy decided to plot a dirt route from Canada to Mexico. He wrote about his plan in Adventure Cyclist magazine in 1994. Montana’s tourist board got wist of his idea and decided to back it. With their support, McCoy invited writers from some of the most prominent outdoor magazines of the era to help him on his scouting missions. Articles in Outside, Bicycling, BIKE, Men’sJournal, and Sports Illustrated got the word out. Mountain bikers from all over the US and further afield were intrigued. Through the Adventure Cycling Association, they started donating $100 per mile to help survey the route. These were the days before online maps showed every deer path through the woods. Riders had to get out into the bush themselves to find trails. When they hit on good ones, they told their friends. Riders from Canada to New Mexico helped McCoy plot the Tour Divide's route. By 1998, it was ready for riders to go explore.

"The basic reason is just that I want to experience the route." - Lachlan Morton

From Banff, the course travels through the vast mountains, emerald lakes, and evergreen valleys of the Canadian Rockies to Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and then crosses Elk Pass to the backcountry roads and singletrack that lead to the ski resort of Fernie. The route then follows the Flathead River down a wild valley roamed by grizzlies to Grasmere, just north of the US border. Then, it’s into Montana where the course skirts the woods and mountains of Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness and bears, elk, moose, and cougars outnumber people. After passing through the old mining town of Butte, it crosses into Wyoming, with its wide-open valleys, ranches, and high-alpine forests, passing back and forth over the Continental Divide on steep mountain roads. Next, it’s into Idaho, if only for 76 beautiful miles beside rushing brooks on an abandoned railroad bed to the west of Yellowstone National Park. The route then crosses into Wyoming past Grand Teton National Park, heading over the Divide again into the Wind River Range, where the mosquitoes are as fierce as the mountains are beautiful. Then, it plummets into the Great Basin, where wild horses and antelope wander across the great, arid plains. The journey from southern Wyoming to New Mexico crosses the Colorado Rockies on backroad cols, passing under the summits of enormous peaks, far above the clouds. The high point is Indiana Pass in southern Colorado, elevation 11,910 feet, or 3,631 m. From there, it’s downhill towards the deserts of New Mexico. Aspens recede. Cacti bloom. Mesas line the horizon and water becomes very scarce, although afternoon storms often turn the roads into a thick red paste. Finally, the route exits the Gila Wilderness and heads towards Silver City. It’s then just a short jaunt, after a very long one, to Antelope Wells on the US-Mexico border.

Lachlan is excited to get going. He is captivated by the stories of the first brave cyclists who rolled out from Banff, heading into the unknown on overloaded bikes, ready to deal with bears, mountain lions, altitude, alpine blizzards, and desert heat. He is looking forward to the long days of solitude in the remote bush, the constant problem solving: Where to get food? Where to get water? How to deal with mishaps and exhaustion and hunger? And he is inspired by his friends in the ultra community who have in more recent years turned the ride into a race.

August 29th, he’ll roll out from Banff and press hard on the pedals until the sun sets. He’ll push on, day in and day out, through rain, snow, or blazing sunshine. When night falls, he’ll prepare supper, fold out his bivy sack and sleep. At sunrise, he’ll get up and push on again.

This is how Lachlan wants to ride the Tour Divide, in tune with the natural cycles of the world and his own body. The best prize won’t be awarded in Antelope Wells, New Mexico after all. It will be experienced from sunrise to sunset, day in and day out, on the way, as he races off-road endurance cycling’s grandest tour against no one but himself.

We’ll document his journey. Lachlan is excited to share his adventure with you.

Lachlan morton.

Lachlan Morton’s cycling career has been anything but traditional. Though he got his start in road cycling, the thirty-one-year-old is best known for the alternative calendar and his long-distance rides. In recent years, he has taken his love of cycling and used it to benefit others.

In early 2022, he rode in a single push from Munich to Korczowa-Krakovets on the Polish-Ukrainian border, covering 1,064 kilometers in 42 hours and raising over $250,000 for Ukrainian refugees. The previous year, Lachlan rode the Alt Tour which saw him ride every stage of the Tour de France, plus transfers, unsupported. He tallied 5,500 kilometers, beat the Tour de France peloton to Paris by five days and, most significantly, raised over $700,000 for World Bicycle Relief.

Over the years, the Australian has joined forces with his brother Gus in the “Thereabouts” documentary series. Their films are dedicated to exploring new perspectives on the world — and their place in it — from their bikes.

Lachlan has ridden bikes for as long as he can remember. As a high school student, he regularly rose at 4:30 a.m. to train before going to class. While most teenagers would be put off by such an early start, Lachlan cherished the time on his own. He still does. In 2022, he completed the 530-mile high-altitude Colorado Trail mountain-bike route solo in just three days, ten hours, and 15 minutes, and raised $12,000 for his late friend Sule Kangangi’s family. He set the fastest known time on Menorca’s Camí de Cavalls 360º solo. Last year, Lachlan rode the Divide, a trail stretching from Banff, Alberta, Canada to Antelope Wells, New Mexico on the U.S.-Mexico border in 12 days, 12 hours, and 21 minutes. He approached this endurance effort differently than other ultra rides he's done. This time, Lachlan made himself stop for 12 hours out of every 48 hours, giving him about six hours of sleep a night, rather than push through and resting only from the occasional power nap. The Divide , EF Pro Cycling's first full-length film, documents the highs and lows (and the gas station snacks) that Lachlan experienced along the way.

This year, Lachlan will have more freedom than ever before. Who knows what adventures he is going to get up to…

Tour Divide 2023 : The race, the gear, the whys and everything in between

tour the divide 2023

It was just over 2 years ago the first time I ever heard of the Tour Divide. I didn’t even know what bikepacking was or that bikepacking racing was a thing.

By then, I had become a time trialist specialist on the road. I had become obsessed with mastering my mind, mastering the art of executing a perfect time trial. I love it so much. I know very well this feeling, my sight on the road ahead, my head tucked in, my lungs expanding to their max, my legs flowing over the pedals. That feeling when I get in the zone, when I’m able to fully surrender and let no amount of pain bother me. It’s pretty amazing. And quite freeing.

tour the divide 2023

A few years ago when I was reading this passionating book “How Bad Do You Want It”, the author spoke of how references are limiters to the mind and the body. If you can remove the information that you know as your references, you could push your body much further. I decided to test the concept and did a 20-minutes blind test – no numbers, no references. Increasing my best 20-min power by 18% was a shocking, yet insightful experience. “You are stronger than you think.” Simply remove the thinking.

I was on the stationary bike trainer when a youtube video came up about the Tour Divide (the documentary was I Just Want to Ride featuring Lael Wilcox – record-holder of the fastest female time on the Tour Divide). A 4,300 km time trial. WOAH! Now everything I know as references are quite irrelevant. How the hell is this humanely possible? Then… What if I remove what I know as possible. What if this was just another example of the amazing things a body can do when you remove references. I was immediately filled with curiosity.

I couldn’t sleep that night. I had to find out: where is the limit of what I can do. Am I able to apply what I came to master in road cycling time trial to a 4,300km bikepacking time trial?

Covering a distance of 4,300km, the Tour Divide is one of the longest and arguably the hardest ultra-endurance bike race on the planet. From Banff (Alberta) in Canada, to Antelope Wells (NM) at the border of Mexico, the course takes the riders along breathtaking scenic landscapes of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (designed by the Adventure Cycling Association back in the 1990s), one of the most well-known off-road touring route that attracts bikepackers and bike tourists from all over the world.

tour the divide 2023

The race has been going on for many years, starting on the 2nd Friday of June of each year, but only started to gain popularity lately with the rise of bikepacking and bikepacking events. The 2023 edition has currently over 250 participants registered to this day (one month before the start). 26 of them are female or non-binary, the highest non-male participation rate ever!

The Tour Divide is more than a cycling race, it is the definition of an endurance and resilience test. The race is self-supported, which means you are not allowed to receive any help. You can use public services such as hotels and restaurants, but you must carry everything you need (clothes, food, camp & sleep, tools). The route goes through many remote areas where a satellite device is the only way of communication. High-altitude mountain passes, changing weather, and wildlife encounters are all part of the race.

Getting ready – my journey to the start line

There is the physical journey, then it’s freacking scary! 2 years ago I had never camped before, never packed gear on a bike, never ridden in the dark or encountered a bear.

Before I could attempt this, I had a few classes to take on. So, 3 weeks after watching the youtube video about the Tour Divide, I departed for my first bikepacking trip. An improvised, but oh so life-changing, one-month bikepacking trip in Utah and Arizona hooked me up. From there, I would use bikepacking for training when I’m not racing.

Last year (2022), I was still racing as a pro road cyclist when a series of events occurred, one of them being the cancellation of BC Superweek, my beloved crit series in July. I was going to fly to western Canada (near Banff) for Road Nationals, but then I had an opening in my calendar. “What a great opportunity to check out the course of the Tour Divide!” I thought.

I flew with all the gear I had and set to ride as much as I can of the route after racing Nationals. I had a wonderful ride in the time trial at Nationals, I rode the absolute best I could. Another 2nd place, but I felt satisfied. I love when I leave it all on the course. I was not going to be National Champion but that’s how it is. I don’t have less joy riding my bike fullgas. It was time to swap bikes.

So, a week later on July 4th, 2022, I departed from Banff and headed south on my pretty beat-up Cannondale FSi mountain bike hardtail, to see if I was capable of riding the terrain, to overcome my fear of bears (oh, I did come face-to-face with a grizzly! But that’s for another storytelling time), to overcome my fear of riding in the dark and confronting the weather of the high-altitude mountain passes.

The course was absolutely mind-blowing!!! Every day, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the landscapes surrounding me. The “non-technical” terrain was very much challenging for my roadie skillset. I was very unprepared for the hike-a-bike and the rain, but it was so empowering to come out of these challenges stronger.

tour the divide 2023

I completed the route in 28 days (about twice as long as the race-winning time), averaging over 10 hours of riding to cover 150km each day -it was the hardest thing I had ever done !!

This course recon was the first step to getting prepared to race. It also made obvious that I needed to improve my MTB skills, to strengthen my upper body for the hike”push”-a-bike, to fasten my camp-to-bike transition, a warmer and more reliable sleep system, and better overall gear and bike.

Live-Tracking – From June 9th, 2023

We will depart from Banff (AB) on June 9th, 2023. You can follow the race live via satellite tracking here .

Even though I will try to film as much as possible, I will not be posting a lot on social media during the race (because it’s a race!) and there isn’t much service between towns. If you do follow my progress, I will love to read your messages of encouragement!

You can find me on instagram at @msoleilblais74 and you can subscribe to my Youtube Channel to be notified when my Tour Divide film is up!

But why in the hell would someone want to race this?

I have long asked myself this question. What is my motivation, why do I want to race the Tour Divide and put all of the efforts behind such a big commitment? Multiple answers come to my mind.

First, it’s the curiosity, the need to push the limits and see how far I can go. I see this as a continuation of my fascination for the power of the mind and playing with the concept of removing references. To see what I could do if I go into something where I have no references at all. Can I carry my time trial state of mind over 4,300km ? How resilient am I?

Second, it’s the transformation. Endurance has never been something I particularly excel at naturally. I had a strong anaerobic profile as a pro cyclist but that is quite useless over a long distance. I think you never become ready for the biggest race of your life, just like you don’t do a marathon before your first marathon. You “become” someone who is capable of doing it, by doing it. I want to become the person at the finish line who was able to race that distance and push her limits to a new level. No matter what happens, I will come out of this test stronger and more resilient.

Lastly, I want to live the experience. The experience of racing my bike all day, all night. Riding as far as I can, every day, with nothing else on my mind than going further. I quite enjoy the solitude of riding long distances in remote areas, and I look forward to re-discovering the magnificent, yet challenging course that is the Tour Divide.

Stay tuned, peace out

Full heart, fullgas

2024 Valspar Championship money: Purse, payout breakdown, winner’s share

Keith Mitchell holds a two-shot lead heading into the final round of the Valspar Championship.

Sunday could be a big day for Keith Mitchell. The 32-year-old took the lead at the Valspar Championship in dramatic fashion on Saturday, holing out from the fairway on the 18th hole for eagle to claim a two-shot advantage heading into the final round.

A win at Innisbrook’s Copperhead course would mark the second of Mitchell’s career, following his 2019 victory at the Honda Classic. And, it would come with a sweet payday: $1.512 million of an $8.4 million purse.

But Mitchell’s chasers aren’t going to make it easy for him. Two-time PGA Tour winner Mackenzie Hughes is only two shots back, and 11 other players are within four shots of Mitchell’s lead at 10 under, including Cameron Young and Brendon Todd (-7) and Adam Hadwin (-6).

Power Rankings: Valspar Championship

Power Rankings

Change Text Size

If you already haven’t taken the time to confirm, the answer is yes. Someone other than Scottie Scheffler will win the Valspar Championship this week. No doubt that there was at least one entrant in the field who was curious that he wasn’t in it after the world’s top-ranked talent won consecutive tournaments.

A larger grouping than originally was planned is assembling on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida. For the explanation, details of the host course and more, continue reading below the ranking of those projected to contend.

As of Monday afternoon, the field stands at 155 but alternates will not be called unless it drops below 144. If necessary to achieve the same objective, this provision also will apply to next week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open and the Valero Texas Open the week after that.

The Copperhead Course is a par 71 with five par 3s and a customary set of four par 5s. The anchor leg of the Florida Swing stood as the hardest of the series in relation to par a year ago when the field averaged 71.935. That also easily was highest among all par 71s throughout the 2022-23 season. The challenge isn’t unusual, though. That it averaged below par a few weeks later in the spring of 2021 and in its more familiar slot in March of 2022 was a surprise.

No matter what, the parkland track has teeth, so all red numbers will have felt well-earned. Although Copperhead can stretch to 7,340 yards, ball-striking is at a premium because overseeded rough is allowed to grow to 3½ inches and overseeded Bermudagrass greens average 5,800 square feet. The putting surfaces also are allowed to reach 12½ feet on the Stimpmeter.

Then there’s the Snake Pit that closes the inward half. Nos. 16, 17 and 18 collaborate for a par-4-3-4 test that averaged +0.593 strokes to par last year. A proper goal for the wannabe winner will be to arrive at it with the lead so as to swing over it unscathed to paydirt. Taylor Moore played it in bogey-free, 1-under for the week, with his only birdie coming on the par-4 16th in the finale.

A strong start also could be imperative. Favorable conditions with manageable breezes are expected for the opening round. That changes considerably as the threat for rain and storms encroach by Friday when winds could gust in excess of 30 mph for a few hours. It’ll calm relatively on the weekend. Daytime temperatures will climb into the 70s.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour crowd caused earthquake-like tremors. These 5 songs shook SoFi Stadium the most.

By Nicole Brown Chau

Updated on: March 18, 2024 / 6:44 PM EDT / CBS News

Taylor Swift is known to have an energetic fan base, but just how much energy can 70,000 Swifties generate? A group of scientists in California may have an answer based on earthquake-like signals from her Los Angeles Eras Tour concert at SoFi Stadium on Aug. 5, 2023.

After Swift's concerts at Seattle's Lumen Field in July caused seismic activity, a California Institute of Technology research team sought to better understand what causes "concert tremor." The team recorded vibrations from motion sensors it set up near and inside SoFi Stadium as well as regional seismic network stations and was able to detect 43 of the 45 songs Swift performed during her concert.

By calculating the energy radiated during each song at the Los Angeles concert, the Caltech researchers could interpret each as a local magnitude of an earthquake that would have radiated the same energy, according their research article , published in Seismological Research Letters on March 13.

With these calculations, the study found the most energetic signals during these songs:

  • "Shake It Off" with a local magnitude of 0.851
  • "You Belong with Me" with a local magnitude of 0.849
  • "Love Story" with a local magnitude of 0.800
  • "Cruel Summer" with a local magnitude of 0.741
  • "22" with a local magnitude of 0.645

The energy released during each song is over a few minutes, rather than a second in the case of an earthquake, explained Gabrielle Tepp, a staff seismologist at the Caltech Seismological Laboratory who oversaw the study. "So the magnitude calculated from the maximum amplitude of shaking is much lower (about -2)," she told CBS News.

The researchers determined that crowd motion was the primary source of the concert tremor signals, not the speaker system and instruments.

They also analyzed three other concerts at SoFi in the summer of 2023: Morgan Wallen, Metallica and Beyoncé.

"Overall, the results from these concerts are similar to those from the Swift concerts and support the audience-source hypothesis," the research article says. "The (local magnitude) of the songs was in the same range as the Swift concerts, although none matched or exceeded the strongest Swift signal."

Swift's Eras Tour has broken multiple records, including becoming the first to gross over $1 billion , according to Pollstar. Swift is currently on a brief break from shows, with the tour starting again on May 9 in Paris after the release of her eleventh studio album, The Tortured Poets Department , on April 19.

March Madness upset picks: Bracket Breakers chooses its 10 most likely first-round stunners

Welcome back to Bracket Breakers! We know you’ve missed us, and we can’t wait to overwhelm you with our unique take on NCAA tournament upsets, powered by our proprietary statistical model, Slingshot. Hopefully, you’ve been following our work for years. But if you’re new to Bracket Breakers, here’s the most recent explanation of who we are, what we do and the state of Slingshot.

In the coming days, we will offer deep regional previews of every first-round matchup that qualifies as a Bracket Breaker game (meaning there must be a differential of at least five seeds). We’ll also provide upset probabilities for every potential second-round matchup on Wednesday. You won’t want to fill out a bracket or place a moneyline bet without checking out that piece!

But as you begin to digest the bracket, we wanted to provide a quick list of the 10 likeliest first-round upsets. We swear we don’t have anything against the Palmetto State — after all, Furman professors Liz Bouzarth, John Harris and Kevin Hutson provide the math behind Slingshot — but our model certainly isn’t bullish on the two power-conference teams from South Carolina.

go-deeper

March madness bracket prep: Capsule previews for all 68 teams, with strengths, weaknesses, outlooks and more

As always, Slingshot looks at teams separated by at least 5 seeds, estimates their basic strengths, adjusts those power ratings according to how closely each team fits the statistical profiles of past Davids or Goliaths, and then modifies them again to account for matchups. This year, we’ve upgraded our cluster analysis. And without further ado, the top results.
