Looking to do 1 day Disneyland , and 1 day above tour, then onto San Diego .

Does anyone have any thoughts / experience of the tour?

grayline bus tours hollywood

Been there, done it. It's a tour, what can I say? Do you have any specific questions about it? Chuck...

Thanks Chuck.

We (esp the kids) are keen to see as much as we can , but realise we are limited by time, and not having been to LA before.

Would you recommend Front of Queue tickerts at Universal in view of limited time ?

How much time to you get at the various stops ?

Many Thanks

If you plan to have a car , why would you leave it at the hotel and take a bus tour? If you did either of the following, you'd have more time in Los Angeles (than the 8 hours the tour will provide) and you'll be able to do it at your own pace -- and even stay into the evening. Los Angeles, like London is extremely spread out. Would you want to race through London on a bus?

Option #1: Drive into Los Angeles and self-tour. Yes, you'll be facing 'rush hour' but if you stayed in L.A. (rather than Anaheim) you wouldn't have this problem. If it were me, I'd add another day to your L.A. visit since, as said, our city is huge (the second largest in the U.S. -- and the most spread out). If you didn't want to drive whilst IN THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES, you COULD take a tour from Starlinetours.com, for example. They offer a tour similar to Grayline's which commences from the Chinese Theater in Hollywood . You can park in the Hollywood & Highland Center Mall (adjacent to the Theater) and hop on the tour bus (no driving around picking up passengers from other hotels). By arriving in the morning, you could have breakfast in Hollywood, have a walk around and then start your tour.

Option #2: Take a taxi to the nearest rail station in Anaheim and take a train into Los Angeles. This will avoid the impact of 'rush hour' and, like driving, you'll be able to spend more time in L.A. (trains depart as early as 6 a.m. -- although that might be a little early). The train will drop you at Union (rail) station in downtown Los Angeles (which is near the eastern edge of our massive city). From there, you have a number of options:

a. You can self-tour downtown L.A. and Hollywood, even make your way to Universal. Our FAQs section has a 3-day itinerary which includes a tour of downtown and also has a section called "theme and amusement parks" which explains how to transfer to Universal (among other parks) via public transit. Briefly, the red line metro rail (which begins at Union Station ) can be used to tour downtown and also goes to Universal City -- the stop closest to Universal Studios .

b. If you'd prefer to take an organized tour, Starline has the aforementioned tour (from the Chinese Theater) which picks up at hotels in downtown as well. You could meet the tour in downtown or transfer to Hollywood to meet it there.

c. Another option is the Starline Hop On, Hop Off (HoHo) tour which consists of 4 intersecting tour loops that cover the city of L.A. and immediate environs (not Anaheim). You can start this tour at any of its pickup points which includes Union Station. One of the tour loops stops at Universal (after transferring to it at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood). The HoHo is available for 24 or 48 hours (the latter is just a little bit more expensive so here's where staying in L.A. for an additional day pays off). If you do plan to visit LOS ANGELES for 2 days then, if it's possible, stay overnight in Los Angeles or stay both nights in Los Angeles (if it's possible to cancel your Anaheim hotel reservation).

grayline anaheim is a well used tour operation for tours from the anaheim area to places such as universal studios.

http://coachamerica.com/graylineanaheim/toursParks.cfm

there is no need to prepurchase a front of the line pass, you can just go to universal studios with the regular ticket first and see how busy it is, if you want to add the pass, you can do so within the park by asking any employee where you can purchase the pass.

Thank you both for your advice. I will now spend some looking at the options suggested.

Thanks Hopskipjump.

Will the metro from Union Station get us to Chinese Theatre / Walk of Fame ?

Will the metro get us to Beverley Hills area?

Assuming using metro & walking, where would be the best place to get a good view of the Hollywood sign ?

Is there a link to a website that will show a map of the areas covered by the metro system?

The option of picking up a tour at Union Station is also a possibility - thanks

You might want to look over our FAQs which has a section called "Local Transportation". Here's a short cut to this section (link and SCROLL DOWN) to the info in the center column:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g32655-i61-k4220103-L_A_FAQs_Local_Transportation-Los_Angeles_California.html

Beverly Hills is not served by metro rail but it is served by buses. You can look up routes to Beverly Hills (use the following intersections to find a route between the part of Hollywood that is near the Chinese Theater and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills):

Hollywood Blvd / Highland Ave

Rodeo Drive / Santa Monica Blvd

As far as the BEST place to view the Hollywood sign , that's up for debate. Certainly, the rear plaza of the Hollywood & Highland Center Mall will give you a decent view. I tend to prefer the views from more eastern vantage points (the portion of Hollywood that is closer to downtown than Hollywood/Highland). Depending on what other stops you want to make or how far you want to walk, here are some options for you:

a. The Barnsdahl Art Park -- this is one of L.A.'s best kept secrets. An easy walk from the Sunset/Vermont red line station which is just before the Hollywood/Vine station. In addition to unobstructed views of the Hollywood sign and Griffith Observatory , the Park features a small, free art museum with constantly-changing exhibits, and Hollyhock House (a Frank Lloyd Wright property that you can tour -- there is a fee and you'll need reservations).

Info about the park is here: http://barnsdallartpark.com/

Here's info about Hollyhock House: http://hollyhockhouse.net/

Also accessible from the Sunset/Vermont red line station (but ONLY on weekends) is the Griffith Observatory in nearby Griffith Park . On weekends, a free shuttle will take you from this red line station to the Observatory. Griffith Park (one of the largest urban parks in the U.S.) has a dozen major attractions including the L.A. Zoo, two museums about trains (including one with ride-able 'steamer trains', a golf course, Equestrian trails, a Western Heritage Museum, the Greek Theater (an outdoor venue) and the Griffith Observatory & Planetarium. The Observatory (also free) has offers spectacular views of Los Angeles as well as one of the best unobstructed views of the Hollywood sign. If you're visiting on a weekday, you have two options for transferring to the Observatory:

a. Take a taxi from the red line station to the Observatory (You'll need to call to order one). The ride will take about 10 minutes and the fare will be about $14 including tip.

b. Take the 50-cent DASH LOS FELIZ bus from the red line station to the corner of Los Feliz Blvd & Vermont Av and then either:

i. Take a taxi from there. The ride will take about 6 minutes and the fare will be about $10 including tip

ii. Walk/hike up to the Obsevatory. The walk/hike will be challenging since it could be hot out. The route is about 1.5 miles / 2.4 km and will take about 35 minutes. Here's a map of the route from the corner of Los Feliz Bl & Vermont Av to the Observatory:

http://mapq.st/pCgL3o

And, here's a transit route showing Union Station, the Sunset/Vermont red line station, Barnsdall Park and the Observatory: You can zoom in on the map using the "+" sign at the right side and you can move the map around by clicking-holding-dragging on any point EXCEPT where one of the circled letters is. You can add or delete stops on the map by editing the info in the top left corner of the page.

See why 'staying in Anaheim and taking day trips into L.A.' doesn't really provide the best exposure to Los Angeles?

Frequently asked questions in regards to Gray Line Orlando pick ups.

Will you pick me up at my hotel?

Due to the sheer size of the Central Florida tourism area, as well as the number of hotels and resorts, unfortunately we cannot pick-up at every one of them, as this would mean the pick-ups would take longer then then tour!

However, we do have a pick-up location spot in all the main regions., International Drive, Universal Resorts, Lake Buena Vista, Walt Disney World Resorts and Kissimmee.  So take a look below and see what area if the best fit for you.

The only contradiction to this rule is for City Tours of Orlando where we will pick you up from your hotel if located in the pick-up zone.  Outside the zone and we will collect you from one of the below locations.

Can I drive to a pick-up location?

You can to most of them.  Some of the pick-up locations are exclusively for people staying in that area, each location has details noted below.  A few of the locations offer free parking!

I don’t have a car.  How do I get to your pick-up locations?

We recommend either Uber and Lyft.  They offer a cost effective option, and are great services.  Should you prefer taxis are also readily available from many hotel locations.

What if I miss my pick-up?

If you are running late for your pick-up, please call us and notify us!  Unfortunately we cannot hold any of our vehicles behind as they are on a tight schedule for the tour days, but we can help you by giving you directions to catch up to the tour, or join at a later point.  Unfortunately there are no refunds if you miss your pick up so please be a little early to your pick up location so you are ready at the spot and waiting at your pick up time.  If you don’t see the Gray Line vehilce please call us on 407-522-5911 to ensure you are waiting in the correct spot.

What if I am unsure where I want to be picked up from?

This is no problem, you can decide at a later time.  However, please let us know at least the morning prior to your tour where you want to be collected from.  Sometimes tours have multiple vehicles on them, so we can’t always guarantee there will be space on the tour vehilce at every pick up spot unless you let us know.  Furthermore, if we have no one scheduled to board the tour vehilce at that location we wouldn’t go there, so just be sure to notify us and confirm where you want to board the tour bus at least the day prior.

DON’T FORGET – LET US KNOW WHERE YOU WANT TO BOARD THE TOUR.

We are thinking of doing the LA/Hollywood tour one day during our stay in July. (this will be our first trip to DL and California in general) I was just curious if anyone had any experience with this tour company or even more specifially this tour. It is 10 hours which seems like a lot, but it seems it may cover a lot of the "hot" spots that we are interested in seeing and the price isn't horrible. Anyone have any experience or have any suggestions for other tours or tour companies? Thanks!!

nzdisneymom said: We did Grayline back in 1995 and it was ok then, but definitely a day on a bus. We are going to DL next week and plan to do a Hollywood/LA tour on Saturday, so I've been looking for a way to do it as well. I got the OC Travel Guide from their tourism department and they have a listing of transportation services including sightseeing tours. I just got off the phone and came to post here to ask about the company we are considering - it's American VIP Limo Service and Tours and they are located on Disney Way. If we end up going with them, I'll be sure to post a review. The price for four of us in a town car for a 5-hour tour (customized) is the same as the 10-hours on the bus (not customized). We were just at DLR last week and my daughter and cousin took Grayline Bus Tours to Universal Studios. The service was perfect...they picked the kids up at DLH precisely at 8:30 and estimated they would be back between 7:30 and 8:30pm depending on traffic and they were back at 7:45pm. We took the Hollywood tour years ago and it was just okay...a lot of on/off the bus...interesting tour, but very tiring in my opinion.

We have been on three Greyline tours from the Disneyland area - Universal Studios, Sea World, and LA/Hollywood/beach tour. All were a lot of fun. The bus driver is also your tour guide and all are very knowledgable and most are very witty. We liked each tour, all different. This bus picks you up at your hotel - ours was on Harbor. Each took the amount of time that was estimated. We were dropped off at our hotel.

  • Jul 22, 2009

We did the Gray Lines Hollywood Tour. Yes, it was a long day but we saw alot of stuff we wouldn't have seen on our own. The bus driver is the tour operator and ours was very knowledgeable and witty. He seemed to be able to judge what was the appropriate amount of time for each stop based on the group on our bus. We made so many stops I probably couldn't even name them all know. What I really liked was as were driving he was able to point out things and give us a little bit of info on them. I would have driven right past Hotel California, etc. if we were touring on our own without batting an eyelash. We had a real mixture of people on our bus -- families with young children to grandparents. Like I said there were many stops and lots of opportunities to pick up something to eat or drink and lots of time for a sit down meal. The one stop at Malibu Beach was too long for everyone but I think it was mainly because it was a windy blustery day, not the best for being on the pier.

To add to my post -- we booked through our hotel and were picked up and dropped off in front of our hotel. We sat right at the front of the bus and had perfect views. I think the bus is big enough that no one is going to miss anything.

I am taking this tour on Wednesday with my dd and her friend (12 and 13 year olds). I can post my experience when we return (8/1)

A question for those that have doen the Universal Grayline tour - does it get you to the park at opening and leave at closing ? I've heard varied stories around this and we really want to maximise our day at Universal . Thanks

  • Aug 1, 2009

We took the Hollywood tour on 7/29. The bus picked us up from our hotel and took us to the ticketing center. We stood in line, validated our online ticket and then boarded our bus. Our driver, Charles, was very knowledgable and funny too. We went to Olvera Street, Walk of Fame, cruised through Beverly Hills, Sunset Strip, Venice beach, Santa Monica Pier and the sites on the route to each. We left our hotel at 8:30 am and returned at 7:30 pm (we were the first stop on the return trip). My dd and her friend had lots of fun. There favorite was the Walk of Fame and Venice Beach.

So did you stop somewhere as a group & have lunch, or did you have time to go off on your own to find something to eat?

I forgot to mention in my previous post that we stopped for lunch as a group at the Farmer's Market. We had about 1.5 hours to eat and shop in that area.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
