For more than five decades—from Santana’s earliest days as a groundbreaking Afro-Latin-blues-rock fusion outfit in San Francisco—Carlos has been the visionary force behind artistry that transcends musical genres and generational, cultural, and geographical boundaries. Most recently, CARLOS, the feature documentary directed by Rudy Valdez and produced by Imagine Documentaries and Sony Music Entertainment celebrating the music icon’s life and career, premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and was released worldwide.

Counting Crows have enchanted listeners worldwide for more than two decades with their intensely soulful and intricate take on timeless rock & roll. Exploding onto the music scene in 1993 with their multi-platinum breakout album, August and Everything After, the band has gone on to release seven studio albums, selling more than 20 million records worldwide, and is revered as one of the world’s most pre-eminent live touring rock bands.

About Carlos Santana:

For more than five decades – from Santana’s earliest days as a groundbreaking Afro-Latin-blues-rock fusion outfit in San Francisco – Carlos Santana has been the visionary force behind artistry that transcends musical genres and generational, cultural, and geographical boundaries. To date, Santana has won ten GRAMMY Awards and three Latin GRAMMY Awards, with a record-tying nine GRAMMY Awards for a single project for 1999’s Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Smooth”). He has received the Billboard Century Award (1996), was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1998), received the Billboard Latin Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor (2009), and was the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors Award (2013). Among many other distinctions, Carlos Santana has been cited by Rolling Stone as #11 on their list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time;” and has joined the Rolling Stones as one of only two bands to have an album reach the Top 10 in every decade since the 1960s. In 2018, he released his first MasterClass, and celebrated two epic milestones the 50th anniversary of his legendary performance at Woodstock, and the 50th anniversary of his masterpiece Abraxas . This year he celebrates the 25 th anniversary of his groundbreaking album Supernatural. Santana’s most recent release, “Let The Guitar Play” (Feat. Darryl “DMC” McDaniels) , follows on the heels of his powerful, energy-infused Blessings and Miracles (2021) that features collaborations with Rob Thomas, Chris Stapleton, Steve Winwood, and many others. The epic feature documentary CARLOS , produced by Sony Music Entertainment and Imagine Documentaries, is a celebration of Carlos Santana’s life and career. It had its World Premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival and is now available to stream worldwide. Santana has been in residency in Las Vegas for over 15 years and will continue to perform at House of Blues Las Vegas where he recently celebrated his 10th anniversary in the intimate venue. About Counting Crows:

For more than two decades, the GRAMMY and Academy Award-nominated rock band Counting Crows have enchanted listeners worldwide with their intensely soulful and intricate take on timeless rock & roll. Exploding onto the music scene in 1993 with their multi-platinum breakout album, August and Everything After, the band has gone on to release seven studio albums, selling more than 20 million records worldwide, and is revered as one of the world’s most pre-eminent live touring rock bands.

In October 1996, the band’s double-platinum sophomore studio album, Recovering the Satellites , debuted at number one and further solidified their growing reputation as one of the leading American alternative rock bands in the world. A follow-up to their early success, Counting Crows went on to release This Desert Life (1999), Hard Candy (2002), Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings (2008), Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did on Our Summer Vacation) (2012), Echoes of the Outlaw Roadshow (2013) and Somewhere Under Wonderland (2014.)  In 2004, Counting Crows recorded the chart-topping “Accidentally in Love” for the animated motion picture Shrek 2. The instant success of the track earned them an Academy Award nomination for “Best Original Song” at the 2005 Academy Awards, a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Original Song” and a GRAMMY Award nomination for “Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.”

In September 2014, Counting Crows released their critically acclaimed seventh studio album, Somewhere Under Wonderland , which debuted at No. 10 on the charts and was heralded by The Daily Telegraph as “… the best collection of songs since their debut.” The album consisted of nine sprawling tracks around rich sonic tapestries, which yielded some of the most grandiose yet intimate songs Counting Crows had recorded to date. 2018 marked 25 years since the band’s inception and sent Adam Duritz, Jim Bogios, David Bryson, Charlie Gillingham, David Immergluck, Millard Powers, and Dan Vickrey back on the road for the “25 YEARS AND COUNTING” tour. In 2021, Counting Crows ranked #8 on Billboard’s “Greatest of All Time: Adult Alternative Artists” 25 th- anniversary chart.

After seven years, Adam Duritz and Counting Crows released Butter Miracle: Suite One in May 2021 to rave reviews. The band also kicked off their first tour since 2018, “The Butter Miracle Tour,” from 2021 through 2023, with sell-out performances across North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Counting Crows is an American rock band that hails from the San Francisco Bay area in CA, U.S. They formed in 1991 and have sold more than 20 million records worldwide.

The group was originally comprised of acoustic duo Adam Duritz and guitarist David Bryson. They spent their early musical career playing coffee shop gigs in San Francisco. The two were interested in recording demos as a band and additional members bassist Matt Malley, keyboardist Charlie Gillingham, and drummer Steve Bowman completed the beginnings of what would be Counting Crows. The band’s name alludes to the British nursery rhyme “One For Sorrow.”

The year 1993 became a turning point for the band. First they were asked to perform at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony as a last minute substitute for Van Morrison. Later that year Counting Crows was signed to Geffen Records and released their debut album “August and Everything After.” They supported the album by joining tours with Bob Dylan, Los Lobos, and the Cranberries. The album’s single “Mr. Jones” exploded on the airwaves and the video became widely requested on MTV. The album stayed on the charts for an impressive 93 weeks starting in 1994. The acknowledgement led them to tour with the Rolling Stones during that same year.

With the addition of drummer Ben Mize and guitarist Dan Vickrey, Counting Crows released their sophomore album “Recovering the Satellites” in 1995. It reached No. 1 in 1996 and songs like “A Long December” and “Have You Seen Me Lately” became hits. Counting Crows has had success in the film industry. Their song “Accidentally in Love” was featured on the animated film “Shrek 2”’ soundtrack and they received nominations for a Grammy, Oscar, and Golden Globe Award for their contribution.

Counting Crows cites Van Morrison, R.E.M., Mike + The Mechanics, Nirvana, Bob Dylan, and Nirvana as their musical influences.

Live reviews

This gig was marketed as part of Bluesfest and thus you got 3 bands for the price of one. The opening act was The White Buffalo. When they took to the stage there weren't many people in the arena, but those that were there got a real treat. The White Buffalo are a 3 piece band playing a mix of blues and ballads and went down well with those that were there to see them. Really enjoyed their set.

Then after a change of stage set Alison Krauss came on. Alison has a beautiful voice complimented by the two members of the The Cox Family. Alison also plays fiddle, and the crowd were treated to a mixture of country and folk music.

Then the headline act. I was disappointed to see the O2 Arena had not sold out this gig, especially as the Crows played two sell out concerts there back in 2014. Also the Arena had curtained off the upper tier so the O2 was probably only really half full, if that. With the London gig following the Dublin gig these were the only two venues on the tour for the UK and Ireland so I was surprised not to see a bigger crowd.

No matter, the Crows were playing the last night of their worldwide tour celebrating 25 years and didn't disappoint. This concert leant heavily on the August And Everything album with songs like Mr Jones, Omaha, Rain King, Round Here, Raining in Baltimore and Murder of One. They also played a Teenage Fanclub number that they usually play in the warm-up earlier in the day, and a favourite of mine, Mrs Potter's Lullaby. Adam likes to chat to the audience and explained the background to nearly every song. As is quite often the case the the sound mix was not quite right for the opening numbers and Adam's vocals were slightly drowned out by the instruments, but once the mix was right the Crows really got into their stride. They finished with Holiday in Spain and you came away feeling you had your money's worth. It was the first time in 25 years I had seen the Crows live and was determined no to miss them this time they came to the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

The lack of response to my invite to go see Counting Crows on Thursday night wasn’t surprising. Even the lure of comp’d tickets wouldn’t budge those in my social circle. There is a part of me that understands this, but I do not understand confusing Counting Crows with the likes of Gin Blossoms, Train or (uggghh) Hootie & The Blowfish. A compilation album comprised of the best songs songs from those bands wouldn’t hold a torch to August and Everything After. If you hit puberty within a decade of that debut album, you have no excuse not to know every word to every song. I’m not saying it’s a groundbreaking work of staggering genius, it’s just one of those albums that defined a time. So, when Adam Duritz took the stage, with his ridiculous mess of mangy dreads, and sang “Step out the front door like a ghost into the fog…“, I knew I made the right decision by rolling solo. Opening with “Round Here” was somewhat of a false promise as to how much August material would be performed on this particular night, but even though “Omaha” and “Perfect Blue Buildings” were glaring holes in the setlist, I am happy to report that Counting Crows sound as good as they did when I saw them in ’96. “Mr. Jones”, an extended “Rain King”, and even a few tracks from the underrated Recovering the Satellites were all highlights of the night, but even the new stuff didn’t sound like it was coming from a band hanging on to a ledge above obscurity. Sure, their latest is an album of covers, so it does help that you’d know the songs even if you hadn’t listened to it, but I have to say Duritz and crew put on a hell’va show. A show they should be proud of 20 years into their career. I am bummed I missed all the openers, but when they all came back out for a collaborative “Hangingaround”, it put a cap on an excellent evening on the Rocks.

I'm a pretty big fan of the Crows, and I attended the show with five other people, including my wife, who were not as into them as I am, so I couldn't help but think of how they were experiencing the show...

I was quite disappointed in their song selection, leaving out at least 4 or 5 songs that my friends would have been mostly familiar with, and that I was really hoping to hear. As 'Rain King' came to close out the show, I knew that it was the last song, so I gave up on hoping to hear them, but as everyone loves 'Rain King', we all stood up to get into it, and It then felt almost like a f.u. as Adam erratically changed the timing of all the versus, making you look stupid if you tried to sing along to it (I hate it when singers do that).

The most perplexing concert moment that I ever experienced was when they came out for their first encore, and they played 'Palisades Park', which is a 13 minute opus from their latest album. This was their encore?? Nobody knows that song. Even the hardcore fans who may love that song had to be distracted by the droves of people that were filing out of the venue. It resembled a sports arena when the home team is getting blown out in the 4th quarter. The second encore saw them bringing a whole bunch of extra people (un-introduced) onto the stage, and it felt like the whole show was only intended for them and their friends. The energy for the overall show fell flat. I am not interested in seeing them again.

Going to watch a Counting Crows show will transport you back to the early 90s...in a good way. Adam Duritz and his signature hairdo will take you on a mystical, musical journey through time, leaving you smiling and happy and probably sweaty at the end of it. Counting Crows know their audience and make sure to play the songs that you came to hear. Don't worry, you won't leave without listening to the classic hits from August and Everything After (Mr. Jones, Round Here, etc.). I mean, that's why you came to the show, right? They don't want a riot.

Luckily their newer stuff is just as catchy and you will find yourself humming along (or attempting to sing along, like I do) and dancing in a way that people do at concerts that are mostly attended by those who were fortunate enough to get a babysitter for the night. After a few domestic beers everyone starts to dance a little bit. Not to mention that after a few beers every song that is played will sound like the "BEST SONG EVER!!!" And that's what a Counting Crows show has got going for it, familiarity and domestic beers. If you're over 30, you should check out one of their shows. If you're under 30, see if any of your parents' friends need a babysitter so they can go.

I attended the gig @ PNC Center in Holmdel. the crowd was a bit rough and there were teens who were annoying in front of us. we had lawn seats. my friend karina really was spent after that ordeal. she didn't talk the rest of the evening home. Citizen Cope was in great form. CC were a bit underwhelming. it just didn't resonate for me. i don't know what to expect from the audience this time and time again. Anyhow, sorry to disappoint. adam and co played the hits and Holiday in Spain was the encore. i just wish my friend enjoyed herself. the potheads can stay home. i've got nothing against it. i'm just not in college anymore. 40 years on. i'd like to recommend the CC but not at this venue.

The VA beach show was AMAZING!!! The Counting Crows has and will be our favorite band forever. The prolific songwriting coupled with awesome harmonies and tight backing instrumental work is continually jaw dropping. Thank you, Adam, for letting us into your world for a few moments while talking about the inspiration for some of your songs. Here’s to another 25 years!! Can’t wait for the next album and every one to follow!!!!

I love the counting crows and have been listening to them since the 90s. I have never seen them live before and was really excited until they got in to about their 3rd song when I realized how talkie he is while he is singing. At one point he had talked or changed every one of their songs which kinda sucked. I wasn't very impressed with his stage presence and style of singing, I will just have to stick to the radio versions.

Great gig on a dry summer evening in Dublin (a rare alignment of events).

The set list was a good mix of favourites and the latest album material.

It is always interesting to hear how they play older songs which they will have re-interpreted after having played them so much. It keeps the audience on their toes when they try to sing along (something an Irish audience will always do).

I've been a big fan since I was very young, but i'm sad to say this will almost certainly be the last time I see them live. Adam sounds nothing like he used to and there is seemingly little effort put into compensating for the decline in quality with additional effort and or set design. This band is a shell of what they were a decade ago and it's a damn shame to see them go out this way.

The Counting Crows cancelled the show in Paris because one of the band members was 'physically ill'. One day later they played at a sold out venue in Amsterdam and played 23(!!) songs. Was it really the illness or just that the concert in Paris wasn't sold out. This was the second time that they cancelled a concert in Paris. I'm completely done with the Counting Crows!

Counting Crows Announce ‘Butter Miracle’ Tour

  • By Brian Hiatt

Brian Hiatt

After releasing their first new music since 2014 with this spring’s Butter Miracle, Suite One , Counting Crows are starting their Butter Miracle Tour on August 7th in Atlantic City, N.J., and wrapping up back on the East Coast on October 5th, at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. Butter Miracle is a glam-influenced, interconnected four-song release that will eventually be the first half of a full Counting Crows album, with another, still-in-progress suite filling the second half.

“I can’t wait to figure out how to work the Butter Miracle Suite into the set,” Duritz says. “Mostly, though, I’m just so happy to get back to playing shows again.” Here’s more from his recent conversation with Rolling Stone ; for full tour dates, see below.

You started writing this music at a friend’s place in the U.K. How did you begin? My friend was off at work in London, and my girlfriend was not there at the time. There was nobody for miles around, and I just realized, “Oh, this might be a good time to write.” I rented a piano, a little keyboard, and brought it down there. And I just started playing a little bit. Then when I came back the next time, I really started working. It just occurred to me that I felt like I wanted to play and write, which hadn’t happened in a while.

“Tall Grass,” the first song you wrote, has a unique feel to it. How’d that come about? I hadn’t written in a long time. It’s almost a little dirge-like, the beginning. I think partially, I couldn’t have written anything more complicated than that very basic thing at that time. It was just, like, a couple chords back and forth. They’re not very melodic. And then midway through it, I developed a different chord pattern that opens up more, that is more melodic. As I started writing more, I got more facility back and the songs developed much more complexity, but at the beginning, I just wasn’t capable of writing anything much more complicated, because I hadn’t touched a piano in a long time. I’m not a very good musician. I have to really try, because I can’t play with a lot of facility. I can’t play by ear. And because of the way dissociation works, I kind of forget how to play every time I don’t play for a little while. I have to sort of feel it out and relearn it and poke at things.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

How did “Angel of 14th Street” come together? We were in a pickup truck in England going into town to get some groceries. And this Bombay Bicycle Club song came on, this kind of a dance tune with this weird, cool bouncy little keyboard line. The idea of that kind of song stuck with me.

Does it feel like you’re going incognito since you got rid of your dreads? I don’t recognize myself half the time. I don’t really know, though, because we had been in a pandemic for so long, so it hasn’t been a factor. I’m not sure. Incognito is nice. There’s things I like about being famous too, obviously. I think it’s pretty cool in some ways. But I could find something to complain about in any situation. [Laughs.] I’m very flexible that way.

It feels like the era of hating on Counting Crows is over, and that people are able to appreciate the band more at the moment. Do you have a sense of that? Well, I’ve never felt it was that way with other musicians. I think we are beloved among musicians; we’re very influential among musicians. That’s how Chris Carrabba [of Dashboard Confessional] became one of my best friends, because he talked about us a lot. And then he asked me to sing on stuff. But in the media and the public, I think there’s been a certain jaded feeling about us. You know, there were years in the past where we mostly got written about, instead of reviews of live shows or records, they were talking about me complaining about being famous while dating hot chicks, so I must be full of shit. There were a lot of reviews that had to do with somebody they thought I dated, which didn’t have anything to do with a live show. But that all seemed to be stopping during [2008’s] Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings. And it really didn’t seem to be a big factor during [2014’s] Somewhere Under Wonderland .

Counting Crows Detail Return to U.S. with Banshee Season Tour 2023

Counting Crows Detail Return to U.S. with Banshee Season Tour 2023

Hot on the heels of their global Butter Miracle Tour over the past two years, Counting Crows have announced they’ll return to the U.S. this year with a new tour touted as the Banshee Season Tour. For their travels, they’ll be joined by their long-time friends, the cult-favorite rock band Dashboard Confessional, along with English singer-songwriter Frank Turner.

The Banshee Season tour will kick off at the Steelhouse Omaha in Omaha, Neb., on June 13 and make 56 stops until its completion, which will culminate with a performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo., on Sept. 25. Over their travels the two ensembles will make stops at many historic and beloved cities in the States including Nashville, New Orleans, Boston, Las Vegas, Tulsa, Okla., Phoenix, Ariz., Seattle, Salt Lake City, Milwaukee, Wisc., Syracuse, N.Y. and more.

“One of the best things about a life in rock and roll is that we spend it traveling the world playing music. It’s even better when you can do it with one of your best friends and watch them play every night too,” Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz said in a press release. “Chris Carrabba hits the trifecta for me in that he’s one of my best friends in the world, one of my favorite people in the world, and he leads one of my favorite bands of all time, Dashboard Confessional. Sorry for the terrible pun but hands down, this is going to be the best summers ever.”

Duritz and Carrabba first met in 2003 at the 17th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert in San Francisco with Neil Young, and the two long-time collaborators remained close, working together both on and off the stage since then.

Carrabba added: “Dashboard Confessional could not be more excited to be playing all across America with our heroes and friends Counting Crows. Dreams really can come true!”

Ticket presales to the tour will begin Tuesday, March 14, in select markets, and the general ticket on-sale will commence Friday, March 17, at 10 a.m. local time. For additional information, follow Counting Crows on  Facebook  and  Instagram .

The Untold Truth Of Counting Crows

Adam Duritz onstage

As one of the hottest alternative rock bands of the '90s, Counting Crows has sold more than 20 million records worldwide . They're also an incredibly popular touring band and are known as a Generation X pop culture staple.

Since 1991, the band has seen its share of changes. From acoustic duo to ensemble, lead singer and songwriter Adam Duritz has always been at the helm. Counting Crows burst onto the scene from Berkeley, California, and their quintessential American folk-rock sound is now familiar to many around the globe. The band celebrated the 25th anniversary of their debut album in 2018, and as of 2021, they rank #8 on Billboards' "Greatest of All Time: Adult Alternative Artists" 25th anniversary chart. After several years of lying dormant, Counting Crows released a new album in May 2021, entitled "Butter Miracle: Suite One."

Whether you're a fan of their music or not, Counting Crows are a rare, lasting breed in the music industry who have survived since the early '90s in one of the most cutthroat businesses on the planet. You may have a song or two of theirs in your music history no matter what generation you belong to, but there are plenty of odd and impressive facts about the band's past, and particularly its leading man, that you might not know.

The origin of Counting Crows' name

The story behind Counting Crows' name came from a British divination nursery rhyme called "One for Sorrow" about the superstitious practice of counting magpies (more commonly known as crows in America). Lead singer Adam Duritz became familiar with the rhyme after viewing the film "Signs of Life."

If you're a super fan of Counting Crows, you may already be aware of Adam Duritz's serial habit of dating actresses. Even before the band came onto the scene in 1993 with their first album, Duritz is said to have been involved briefly with actress Mary-Louise Parker, who starred in "Signs of Life . " "Girls have always liked Adam" his sister, Nicole, told Rolling Stone . "Why not? He's funny, he's charming, and he's passionate about what he does." It's only fitting, then, that the longstanding band's name originated from one of Adam's relationships with an actress.

Hints of the band's name are dropped in their debut album "August and Everything After" in the track "A Murder of One." The rhyme's most popular verse is: "One for sorrow,/ Two for joy,/ Three for a girl,/ Four for a boy,/ Five for silver,/  Six for gold,/ Seven for a secret,/ Never to be told."

Now you know to never call them The Counting Crows, (a common mistake) because they're simply "counting" crows.

Counting Crows started as an acoustic duo

Counting Crows eventually became an ensemble band, but in the beginning, there were only two. Adam Duritz, who moved from his native Baltimore to the Bay Area, was involved in numerous music projects  and eventually found some mild success in the San Francisco-based band the Himalayans, who received local praise in the early '90s . In fact, Counting Crows' hit track "Round Here" was  originally a Himalayans song .

Duritz formed Counting Crows with producer/guitarist David Bryson, and the two became an acoustic team who performed around the Bay Area. Duritz quickly became a standout performer with his long dreadlocks and grungy-emo demeanor that fit perfectly with a brooding Generation X and the mood of the decade.

The pair eventually became a five-member group two years later in 1993 and received their first break when they were invited to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction for Van Morrison. It would be nearly a decade before the band went from five to seven members in 2001, according to WNRN.

Some likely and unlikely influences

Adam Duritz has spoken openly about the effect Kurt Cobain's death had on him as the band was up-and-coming. Nirvana had burst onto the scene only a couple of years prior to Counting Crows, and learning of Cobain's suicide shook Duritz.

"I knew Kurt; we were label-mates, we were signed by the same guy [Gary Gersh]," Duritz told the  Pittsburgh City Paper . "We were like his two little brothers at the time." Duritz admitted that the news "scared the sh*t" out of him. "I'd just wrapped my head around doing this thing, and then I found out — here's this guy who's just been on the cover [of Rolling Stone], and look what happened to him," he said.

Duritz also credits '70s/'80s band Big Star and Miles Davis as huge influences on his music writing. Other, more obvious influences include Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, the Band, R.E.M., Thin Lizzy, Tom Petty, and Pearl Jam, according to  Rolling Stone .

Legendary music producer T-Bone Burnett was responsible for honing their sound on Counting Crows' first album "August and Everything After," which became known as a somber set of tracks. However, their one-way ticket to arriving on everyone's radar and heading to the top of the charts was the only uplifting, upbeat track on the album, "Mr. Jones."

Accounting Crows

When Counting Crows burst on the scene in 1993 with their debut album "August and Everything After," they got more than one record company's attention. Rolling Stone dubbed them "the Biggest new band in America" that year, and a bidding war between Geffen Records and eight other companies ensued. Gary Gersh, the Geffen A&R rep who signed Nirvana, was "blown away" by their sound, which according to Gersh, was rare.

The album went platinum in just five months, which, as The Washington Post points out, was faster than Pearl Jam's first album "Ten" and Nirvana's "Nevermind." The band soon became known to industry insiders as the Accounting Crows.

Duritz was wary of the fast fame and success. "I'm happy with the fame in a lot of ways. I won't deny that," he told the Post. "But it's kind of scary. Something has definitely changed in my life, and I can't go back now if I wanted to." Almost overnight, Duritz was dating famous women, hanging out with megastars like Johnny Depp and Sean Penn, and fronting platinum albums. He even went so far as to compare the sudden notoriety to " waking up on Mars ."

Who is Mr. Jones?

Some songs are abstract, but others have true stories behind them. In the case of Counting Crows' first big hit "Mr. Jones," there was an actual Jones they were describing.

The song is based on Marty Jones, the former bassist of Adam's previous band, the Himalayans, and Kenney Dale Johnson (pictured), the drummer of Chris Isaak's band Silvertone. The story often told about the track is that it was written about a night out in San Francisco when Marty and Adam went to see Marty's father David, who happened to be a flamenco guitarist. The story is revealed in a 2011 documentary about Marty's father, "Gypsy Davy." In the film, Marty admits to giving up his successful career as a musician because "he feared repeating his father's behavior," according to  Variety .

The link to Kenney Dale Johnson is more obscure. When Johnson heard that the song was also about him, he didn't know why. In fact, he didn't even know any members of Counting Crows. According to an interview with Blogcritics Magazine , Johnson spotted Duritz in an airport and took him aside to inquire about the song's content.

"People have been e-mailing me forever telling me that you say from the stage that I was the inspiration for 'Mr. Jones,'" Johnson said to Duritz. Duritz admitted that he saw Johnson surrounded by girls and thought, "Yeah, when we get our record out, we'll all be a big shot, too."

Adam Duritz's uncommon psychological disorder

Adam Duritz eventually opened up about his rare dissociative disorder, which he had dealt with for about 25 years and was especially difficult after the release of Counting Crows' album "Hard Candy" in 2002. "The more things seem less real, the more you begin to drift away, and you lose all your tethers to the world," he said of his disorder . He revealed his diagnosis to the public in 2008 after suffering since his early 20s. Known as depersonalization disorder, it can make someone feel "disconnected from their physical bodies and no longer in control of their thoughts and actions," according to the  Huffington Post .

In an interview with the  Miami New Times , Duritz was asked if writing music acted as therapy for the disorder. "No, I don't think there's anything therapeutic about songwriting," Duritz answered. "You've got to get your therapy done outside of things like that. But an album is probably a good way of judging how the person is feeling."

Duritz's lifestyle as a traveling musician, he admits, doesn't help his disorder, either.

This Desert Life and David Lowery

David Lowery, former leader of the bands Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker, co-produced Counting Crows' third studio album "This Desert Life." The band met Lowery while they were touring together in the early '90s. Counting Crows rented a house to do some pre-production work with Lowery for about two weeks, during which he gave the band "advice about structure and how they want to make the album," according to  MTV .

The collaboration got mixed reviews. Entertainment Weekly's Mark Bautz wrote that "Producer David Lowery brings a loose-limbed instrumental feel to several cuts, but few of these downcast, Duritz-centric songs have the vitality that made "Mr. Jones" 1994's love-it-or-hate-it hit."

The cover of the album was inspired by Neil Gaiman's book "The Day I Swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish" and designed by the same artist, Dave McKean. Despite lukewarm reviews, the album had a couple of hit radio tracks, including "Hanginaround."

A pioneer in using social media for publicity

Adam Duritz was active on AOL message boards and Twitter at the very beginning of the social media movement. He quickly gained  more than a million followers on Twitter in the early 2010s, which helped the band's popularity among a new demographic.

In 2011, Duritz allowed fans to create the cover art for his "All My Bloody Valentines" album, interacting with the fans on social media as they submitted their artwork. He recorded the album at night during the week before Valentine's Day, according to The Wall Street Journal . "All My Bloody Valentines" is a collection of covers that includes songs by Bob Dylan, the Cars, Ryan Adams, and Tom Waits. Duritz ultimately received around 1,400 entries . After narrowing them down to 25, he couldn't choose one winner for their design work, so he chose two lucky fans' artwork for the album cover.

Their fans have high SAT scores

Can your music preferences determine how smart you are? The jury has been out for years. Classical music, for example, has been linked to improving concentration, but never before had specific analysis been done on modern music linked with a popular aptitude test. Until it was.

According to a data study conducted by software application writer Virgil Griffith , Counting Crows listeners, on average, scored quite high on the SATs, second only to Beethoven and close with other musicians like Radiohead, the Beatles, U2, Bob Dylan, and Sufjan Stevens, according to Chron . Griffith is known for creating the Wikipedia Scanner that detects where edits on the site are coming from.

The study takes average SAT scores of certain college institutions and breaks down music by genre. According to its findings, Lil Wayne listeners rank at the very bottom.

Of course, like a lot of data sets, this finding should be taken with a grain of alt-rock salt.

Counting Crows' songs are key signifiers to famous films

Counting Crows' songs have been featured in numerous films, including " Colorblind ," featured in "Cruel Intentions," and Joni Mitchell cover " Big Yellow Taxi ," which was used in the soundtrack for the film "Two Weeks Notice." Adam Duritz also composed the song "Accidentally in Love" for "Shrek 2,"   as well as a number of original tracks for the film "Josie and the Pussycats."

Writing the theme song for the "Shrek" franchise proved challenging for Duritz, whose personal and introspective song lyrics comes naturally. "I was really struggling with it. I generally don't write songs on demand, and I almost got to the point where I thought I wasn't going to do it," he told Billboard (via " Today "). In order to prepare for composing the song, Duritz traveled to DreamWorks animation camp to view part of the film, including the opening sequence where the song was eventually placed. "They just told me that the song had to be uplifting," Duritz added about his experience. "They actually said, 'Don't write a song about Shrek. Write a song that's about you.'"

His hard work paid off, as the song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song .

Adam Duritz has dated many famous women

Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz has been linked to not one, but two "Friends" stars and is known to be quite the serial celebrity dater.

Duritz had a high-profile relationship with megastar Jennifer Aniston in 1995. Counting Crows had won two Grammys in '94, and Duritz reportedly wrote hit song "A Long December" about the epic parties thrown at actress Samantha Mathis' house during that era, according to  InStyle . Duritz and Aniston were a Hollywood power couple in the making. Unfortunately, they lasted about two weeks . Duritz noted, "We never even slept together," in an interview.

Duritz is rumored to have also dated Mathis at some point around the same time and has also been linked to Courteney Cox and Mary-Louise Parker, as well.

Years later, in 2009, he and Golden Globe-nominated actress Emmy Rossum had a public relationship for about a year. According to Rossum , the pair met on Twitter. "I was on tour with the band this summer," she said. "They invited me actually on Twitter. That's how we met — on a dare. They dared me to come sing with them a song that I'd never sung before ... So I ended up on tour with the band, and it was very, very fun." "He's extremely kind, incredibly intelligent, thoughtful, creative and respectful," Rossum said of Adam to People . They reportedly remain close friends.

The Underwater Sunshine podcast and festival

Counting Crows may have gone dormant for a time, and a few members have come and gone, like founding member Matt Malley . They are still very much together, however, and are set to tour in 2021 to perform their latest album. Duritz especially is still a pinnacle voice in American music and has become a brand for deeply personal, introspective rock fusion and lent his name to a variety of projects.

Duritz hosted a podcast named after the Counting Crows 2012 album "Underwater Sunshine" in 2018. " Underwater Sunshine: The Podcast ," co-hosted by James Campion, aired weekly until early 2020. The podcast covered various pop culture subjects, including film and music. Campion, a personal friend of Duritz, is a music and pop culture writer and co-wrote a book with Duritz.

A semiannual  music festival of the same name followed in New York, which helps shine a spotlight on independent musicians. With Duritz and Barbara Garrett as the executive producers and Kate Mullins as the executive writer, the festival strives to create an "immersive" music experience. During the festival's off seasons, the brand showcases musicians year-round on social media, promoting individual artists through video, interviews, and performance clips.

In September 1993, Adam Duritz and his Bay Area folk-rock band, Counting Crows, released their debut album, “August and Everything After,” which went on to sell 7 million copies, spawned an inescapable radio smash in “Mr. Jones” and turned the dreadlocked Duritz into one of Hollywood’s most enthusiastic daters of actors (including, as the story goes, two “Friends” cast members in Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox).

Three decades later, Duritz is still attracting famous and beautiful women.

On a recent evening, Counting Crows played to a full house at the Troubadour as a means of drumming up excitement for a North American tour that circles back to Inglewood’s YouTube Theater for a show Wednesday night. Among those gathered to hear “Mr. Jones,” “A Long December,” “Round Here” and the rest was Cindy Crawford, whom the next morning Duritz insisted he doesn’t actually know.

“A million people came backstage and said, ‘Cindy Crawford’s at your show!’” the singer, 59, recalled with a laugh in an interview at his West Hollywood hotel. “I was like, ‘Huh, cool.’”

For the current tour, Counting Crows — with a lineup of original members, longtime players and newer recruits — are joined by the veteran emo act Dashboard Confessional, whose Chris Carrabba has become a close friend of Duritz’s in New York, where they both live. In May, Duritz and his girlfriend, filmmaker Zoe Mintz, went to see Taylor Swift’s Eras tour at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium with Carrabba and his wife.

Duritz’s verdict? “I was floored,” he said.

Adam Duritz of Counting Crows performs at the Troubadour.

You sound surprised. Chris knows her really well, and I was a big fan when she started, but I hadn’t listened to her for about 10 years. My girlfriend is obsessed and she got us tickets and she made me a playlist — I couldn’t believe how good the “Folklore” and “Evermore” stuff was. A lot of big shows don’t interest me because it just seems like it’s people plus dancers plus whatever. But this was a work of art — like some combination of Broadway show and Universal theme ride.

I noticed at the Troubadour that you had a music stand with a binder on it. I assume it had song lyrics, but you never once looked at it. I’ve always had a binder with lyrics sitting at the back of the stage under the piano — just there if I need to look for something. Of course, it’s essentially useless because if I do need to find a lyric, I’m not gonna be able to get under the piano, flip through the binder and find it in time. But after COVID — I mean, two years was the longest I’d gone without playing a gig since I was a kid. And when we got into rehearsals for that tour, I was like, “F— hell, I got a lot of lyrics.” You know, “Palisades Park,” that’s like 10 minutes long. I’m like, “How did I write all this s—? Why did I write all this s—?” So I was just nervous that I wasn’t gonna remember stuff after those two years.

Last night you let the audience take over for the chorus of “Mr. Jones.” What are you thinking in those moments? There’s something so galvanizing about an audience singing your song. But “Mr. Jones” — that’s a really high note. I often let the first one go to the audience, but there’s a part of me that thinks: I’m 59 now. They probably think I can’t hit that note anymore. I’m gonna sing the rest of ’em myself . But last night I had no voice — I’m just getting over a chest infection. I knew I wasn’t gonna hit it.

So the haters were right. In this case, absolutely.

I went back and read some old Counting Crows reviews in The Times. There’s one of a gig you played in Irvine in 1997 that says, “Duritz is one of the few who can make Jackson Browne and Morrissey seem cheery by comparison.” I’m assuming that wasn’t a great review.

It was not. But does that description square with how you thought of yourself at that time? Well, I had a pretty severe mental illness that I wasn’t talking about publicly back then. I spent a lot of time depressed, and clearly the writer got that. But it’s a weird thing as an artist to have your life judged solely by people who don’t know you — and with no sympathy, only ridicule. I got myself locked up at the UCLA Medical Center for a little bit [in 2001] because I was having some troubles and just needed to settle things down because I didn’t feel safe. And the day I checked in, Mariah Carey checked out, and I remember the media circus that went on with her and how people made fun of her. That stuck in my head.

How you feeling these days? Mental illness isn’t like breaking your leg. It’s closer to a handicap than it is to an injury. But at least if you realize what it is, you can spot it when it’s going on. You can go, OK, I’m not crazy — my mind just does this when this happens. And you don’t feel like you’re losing touch with reality. I started to feel safe talking about it around 2008, when we released “Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings,” because I didn’t feel like I was circling the drain anymore. But I’m not a spokesperson for s—. I don’t really feel the responsibility to be everyone’s flag-bearer for mental illness.

You worked at the Viper Room when you moved to L.A. Why was a well-known rock star tending bar? When I got home to North Berkeley from the end of the “August” touring — this is like January of ’95 — that first week was kind of a nightmare. There were kids literally camped out on my lawn. I knew [Viper Room owners] Sal [Jenco] and Johnny [Depp], and I got a phone call from them where they started to invite me to something. Then they’re like, “Whoa, what’s wrong?” I explained what was going on and they put me on hold. I’m sure I’ve fictionalized this somewhat, but in my memory they came back five minutes later and said, “OK, you have a reservation on the 7 o’clock flight from Oakland to Burbank. Someone will pick you up at the airport, and we got you a room at the Bel Age. It’s Kate Moss’ 21st birthday — the Viper Room is closed for the night and we’re having a party. You gotta get out of Berkeley.” So I did, and I kind of never went home again. Stayed at the Bel Age for a while, then got a bungalow at the Sunset Marquis. Eventually Shannon, one of the bartenders, found me this house to rent. I’d go to the Viper every night and hang out. They were the only people I knew, really. At some point, Shannon had to go to the bathroom or something and she’s like, “Can you handle this?”

Did you know how to make drinks? I learned.

Surely people knew who you were. Which is why it was all the better to be on the other side of the bar. I’m kind of shy, and it gave me something to do. People would come and talk to me and I didn’t have to be wandering around by myself in a crowd. I met girls and I met Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs and Tom Petty and the Hughes Brothers. Everyone that was doing something interesting in L.A. was there.

Yet you left L.A. in the early 2000s for New York. I came here from the Bay Area because the struggling artist’s town that I came from wasn’t happy with my success. And L.A. is a working artist’s town. I felt like somebody normal when I got here. But it kind of changed when reality TV came in. There was a culture of famous-for-being-famous that got really tiresome to me. I went to New York and just found myself having more interesting conversations. Mary-Louise Parker is one of my best friends since we were young, and she and Billy Crudup were together then. One night Billy and I went to see Noël Coward’s “Private Lives.” Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan were in it. And after the show, we went backstage and had drinks in Alan’s dressing room, then we all went out to dinner and Rosemary Harris came by the table at one point. It was this incredible experience with these older British actors who were really smart and cool, and I just thought, “If I moved to New York, I could have conversations like this.”

Whereas here you could hang out with the cast of “Laguna Beach.” Or, like, “That ’70s Show.” Who are actually really nice people. Well, the ones that aren’t in jail.

Counting Crows’ first few albums came out on David Geffen’s label. Ever meet him? Yeah, sure — he was great. After the band blew up, I was summoned out to his house. Got in the car, drove out to PCH, count up to 20,000 or 30,000 or whatever the address was. I ring the doorbell on this wall and eventually this butler guy opens the door: “Oh, Mr. Duritz, please come in.” All at once I see the bright greens of the lawn and the blue of the ocean, and there’s Geffen standing at the end of this long pathway. He greets me and we sit on this patio off to the side of the house and they bring lunch to us, which is like a seared tuna salad. I remember this so vividly because each vegetable in the salad was like the greatest vegetable that had ever been. I’m thinking, “Does he have specialized farming servants who pick each individual tomato?” Just an unreal explosion of salad-ness.

What’d you talk about? All kinds of stuff. He told me about leaving New York to drive up to Woodstock with Joni [Mitchell], then realizing the traffic was too much but she’s gonna write a song anyways. He told me about working with Jackson [Browne] early on. You know what really struck me? This is a guy who’s done a lot of great s— in his career. But in his mind the greatest thing he ever did was the Eagles. I like the Eagles, but I wouldn’t put them at the top. I’m a Flying Burrito Brothers guy, a Gram Parsons guy. But the Eagles sold a gazillion albums and made more money than all the other acts put together. And that was his greatest accomplishment because for him it’s not just a music thing but a business thing. It was his idea: “You guys aren’t gonna make it on your own — you should make a band together.” It’s like deciding you should do personal computers and starting Apple.

Bob Saget and Adam Duritz.

You were close with Bob Saget , who died last year. What was the essence of your friendship? I met Bob because my goddaughter’s godmother [Lori Loughlin] was on “Full House.” They’d all come to the shows early on. Everyone who knew Bob thought they were Bob’s best friend. He made you feel that way when you were with him, like you were the most important person in the world. It’s weird: I’ve had people in my life die before, but I’m never gonna get over this one. I’ll be in the middle of something and I’ll just wanna talk to him and realize I’m not going to. It’s kind of devastating.

You’ve got other friends in comedy. Ever try stand - up? I could never do it. It’s the most death-defying performance art there is. I’m in awe at the speed at which those guys’ minds work. I’m a smart guy, but I got nothing on that.

At the show last night you had a Badfinger T-shirt on. Now you’re wearing a Sunflower Bean shirt. How much thought do you put into your choice of band shirt? Last night I was going between a bright-red Big Star shirt, the Badfinger one and a Bowie shirt with the art from “Space Oddity.” I went with what looked good with my pink shoes.

Do you have a ton of band shirts? I don’t have anything else. My biggest bummer about getting on the plane to come here was that my girlfriend bought me a Taylor Swift “Midnights” shirt that just was a little too tight, so I didn’t bring it. I gotta lose a little more weight before I can wear it.

It’s good to have a goal. It’s literally what I’m working towards: to wear the Tay-Tay shirt.

Counting Crows Announce 56-Date 2023 Summer Tour with Dashboard Confessional

by Jacob Uitti March 14, 2023, 9:03 am

Grammy-nominated band Counting Crows, known for songs like “Mr. Jones” and “Omaha,” has announced a lengthy, 56-date summer 2023 tour that’s set to kick off on June 13 and conclude on September 25.

Videos by American Songwriter

The new string of dates, dubbed the Banshee Season Tour, will be a collaboration with the popular band Dashboard Confessional. English singer-songwriter Frank Turner will also join the tour for select dates.

The string of shows kicks off in Omaha, Nebraska, at the Steakhouse Omaha with stops in Boston, Tampa, Nashville, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and more. The 56-date tour concludes with a show at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado, on September 25.

Fans can check out a video from Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz and Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba “packing” for the trip below. The two pals originally met in 2003 at the 17th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert in San Francisco with Neil Young. Since then, the two have remained buddies, working together both on and off the stage.

“One of the best things about a life in rock and roll is that we spend it traveling the world playing music,” said Duritz of the upcoming gigs. “It’s even better when you can do it with one of your best friends and watch them play every night too. Chris Carrabba hits the trifecta for me in that he’s one of my best friends in the world, one of my favorite people in the world, and he leads one of my favorite bands of all time, Dashboard Confessional. Sorry for the terrible pun but hands down, this is going to be the best summer ever.”

Added Carrabba, “Dashboard Confessional could not be more excited to be playing all across America with our heroes and friends Counting Crows. Dreams really can come true!”

Tickets go onsite to the general public for the tour on Friday, March 17, at 10 a.m. local time. For additional information on Banshee Season Tour 2023, please visit, HERE .
