I will show you a mix of must-see Alsatian villages, nature escapes, and city getaways. All the places in this article are easily accessible by public transport, a train or a bus!

A visit to Colmar is the most popular day trip from Strasbourg. The historic center of Colmar is one of those places that feel like they’ve been untouched by modernization. 

Once you reach Colmar , head straight to the Petite Venice quarter.

By train: Take a train from Strasbourg train station. It takes approximately 30 minutes. By bus: Take a Flixbus from the Strasbourg bus station.

If you visit Strasbourg, a day trip to Alsatian villages is essential, especially if you visit in time for the Christmas Market . You might think that Strasbourg is already a real-life fairytale city, but wait until you see the villages on this list!

It should come as no surprise that Alsace villages are on the prestigious list of The most beautiful villages in France .

Alsace villages might look familiar if you’ve seen Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. 

There are a few versions of the story in which one of the villages inspired Disney. Some say it was Riquewihr, and some say it was Eguisheim. The best way to find out is to visit both and compare!

You can also visit Alsace villages on an organized tour if you don’t feel like dealing with buses and trains yourself.

2. Day Trip To Eguisheim

Eguisheim is probably the best-known Alsace village, as it won the title of “France’s Favourite Village” in 2013.

You don’t need a specific itinerary to visit Eguisheim. Stroll the cobblestone street and admire the authenticity of the village.

This medieval city was built in a circular form around its castle, and it is well preserved to this day!

How to get to Eguisheim from Strasbourg?

Take a bus or a train to Colmar. Once in Colmar, take Fluo bus 208 from the Colmar Train station. Check the schedule on the Fluo Grand Est website .

This bus only passes a couple of times a day and not on the weekend, so another great way to visit is to cycle there!

Take your bike on a train to Colmar for free, and cycle for 30 minutes from Colmar to Eguisheim.

3. Day Trip To Riquewihr

Riquewihr is one of the most charming places I’ve ever visited. It is rightfully on the list of the most beautiful villages in France. 

This village on top of the hill is surrounded by vineyards. Stroll the cobblestone streets and admire colorful half-timbered houses. 

How to get to Riquewihr from Strasbourg?

Take a bus or a train to Colmar. Once in Colmar, take Fluo bus 106 from the Colmar Train station. Check the schedule on the Fluo Grand Est website .

Alternatively, you can take your bike on a train to Colmar for free and cycle from Colmar to Riquewihr. But keep in mind that Riquewihr is on top of a hill!

4. Day Trip To Hunawihr

Hunawihr is another charming village you can visit on the same trip as Riquewihr, as you enjoy the Alsace vineyards between the two towns.

How to get to Hunawihr from Strasbourg?

You can visit Hunawihr on the same trip as Riquewihr, it is just 2.5km away, and you can walk from one village to the other!

Alternatively, you can take your bike on a train to Colmar for free and cycle from Colmar to Hunawihr.

5. Day Trip To Ribeauvillé

Ribeauvillé is a charming village guarded by three old castles overlooking the city. As it is a small village, the most popular way to visit is combined with a three-castle hike. 

It is a short hike uphill if you’re visiting from the city, and you can see all three castles and be back in under 2 hours. 

How to get to Ribeauvillé from Strasbourg?

First, you will take a train to Selestat. Then, you will take a 25-minute TER Fluo bus from Selestat train station to Ribeauvillé.

Best Hikes And Castles From Strasbourg

• Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg to Ribeauvillé
• Mont Sainte-Odile and Obernai
• Château du Haut-Barr and Saverne

In this section, I will focus on some of the best nature escapes from Strasbourg. Nature in Alsace is incredible.

While you need a car for most of the best hikes in the area, you can still reach some fantastic hiking trails and castles by public transport!

6. Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg to Ribeauvillé hike

This hike idea is the extended version of a popular hike known as the three-castle of Ribeauvillé hike.

You can just visit the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg without hiking to Ribeauvillé, as it is the most impressive and well-preserved castle in the region.

You can walk around the outdoors of the castle for free, but you will have to get a ticket to see the inside. 

Once you’ve explored the chateau, start walking back down the road you came from, towards Thannenkirch. 

You’ll have to pass through the village on the way to the Three Castle Trail. You will walk a bit on the side of the road, so don’t think you did something wrong.

This hike will take you around 4 hours to complete if you take your time to enjoy the scenery and climb the castles.

How to get to Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg from Strasbourg?

You’re going to take a train to Selestat. From Selestat train station you will take a bus 500 to Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg.

From Ribeauvillé, you can take a TER Fluo bus back to Selestat train station.

7. Mont Sainte-Odile and Obernai

Combine a hike to the Mont Sainte-Odile with a visit to the charming village of Obernai. 

Start your hike from the village of Ottrrot. Follow the signs leading you to the start of the trail. 

The hike is moderately challenging, and it will take about an hour to two hours to reach the Monastery, depending on your fitness level. 

The peak altitude of the hike is 760m, and it is free to visit the Monastery. 

If you are backpacking Europe in winter , this trail is also stunning when covered in snow!

How to get to Mont Sainte-Odile from Strasbourg?

There are two ways to reach Mont Sainte-Odile. 

First, you can take a train to Obernai and then take a bus 257 or 262 or walk for about half an hour to Ottrrot.

Alternatively, you can do as I did. You take bus 257 from Strasbourg to Ottrrot , it takes about an hour and costs 2,50€. This bus goes all the way to Mont Sainte-Odile if you are not into hiking and just want to visit the Monastery!

After finishing the hike, you can walk to Obernai. You will walk on the car road, but it is not very busy, so it is not dangerous. 

Finally, take a train or a bus back to Strasbourg from Obernai.

8. Château du Haut-Barr and Saverne

While not as famous as the Alsace villages around Colmar, Saverne is another one of the popular cities near Strasbourg to visit.

However, a visit to Saverne is the best combined with a hike to the Château du Haut-Barr.

It is an enjoyable hike to the castle, and it will take you less than an hour to reach it. The chateau is free to visit! Walk around and climb the watch tower for the best view of the whole region.

You can finish the hike after reaching the castle or continue to Tour du Télégraphe Chappe and Château du Grand-Geroldseck.

How to get to Château du Haut-Barr from Strasbourg?

Take a train from Strasbourg to Saverne, it takes approximately 40 minutes. Once you’re in Saverne, you’ll have to walk to the beginning of the trail, next to the Hôtel La Garenne. 

Once you’re on a trail, it’s pretty straightforward just follow the sign upwards.

Best Cycling Trips From Strasbourg

• Alsace wine route
• Strasbourg to Saverne
• Kehl and Baggersee Kork lake

Alsace is a region perfect for cycling. It is the most bike-friendly region I’ve ever visited, as you can bike everywhere!

As long as you stay away from highways, you will see a bike lane on the road!

9. Cycling the Alsace Wine Route

You might wonder if it is possible to bike the Alsace wine route. Yes!

If you are sporty and love cycling, biking along the Alsace wine route is an excellent day trip from Strasbourg. 

The Alsace wine route is over 170km long, way too long for a cycling day trip. However, you can check the map and select the part of the route you’d like to cycle. 

The most picturesque part of the Route might be between Selestat and Colmar, the part of the route that passes through the fairytale villages of Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé.

• If cycling and drinking wine sound too challenging, how about joining a tour? That way you don’t have to worry about transportation, and you can just enjoy wine tastings. This Half-Day Wine Tour from Strasbourg is one of the best day tours from Strasbourg!

To reach the Alsace wine route, take your bike on a TER train to Selestat and return from Colmar. If you book your train in advance, it can be 5€ per direction!

10. From Strasbourg to Saverne by bike

Yes, you can bike to Savern from Strasbourg, along the river canal. The cycling path starts north of Strasbourg, close to the European Court of Human Rights.

Once you’re on the route, you can’t go wrong, as road signs will make sure you’re on the right way!

You don’t have to worry about cars because 95% of the cycling route is away from the road. It is around 40 km and mostly flat, so it is not as hard as it might sound! 

That being said, when I did it, it took me about 5-6 hours with multiple stops to admire the surroundings. And by surroundings, I mean those bales of hay pictured below.

11. Cycling to Kehl and Baggersee Kork lake

Cycling from France to Germany is a fantastic thing to tick off your bucket list! It is easier than ever if you are already in Strasbourg. 

Cross the Europe Bridge and bike straight into the German city of Kehl. You will see many French people in Kehl grocery shopping as Germany tends to be cheaper than France for particular items. 

If you visit Strasbourg in summer , cycle to Baggersee Kork swimming lake!

It is under 15km from the city center of Strasbourg to the lake. Once you leave Kehl, you will cycle along the fields, away from the road. Bike lanes are everywhere, so don’t worry about safety!

12. fun day trip to europa park.

Are you looking for a fun weekend day trip out of Strasbourg?

The largest German theme park Europa Park is just an hour away from Strasbourg and you can visit it on a fun Strasbourg to Germany day trip!

A visit to the theme park is a great way to spend a weekend as there are more than 100 attractions so everyone can find something for themselves.

How to get to Europa Park from Strasbourg?

It is easy to get to Europa Park by public transport! You can take a shuttle bus or a Flixbus.

A shuttle bus ticket will cost you 8€ for a return ticket, and the bus takes about an hour to reach the park. Check the departure schedule on the CTBR website . 

Alternatively, you can take a Flixbus, but it is more expensive and departs later, so you have less time in the park. 

13. Day Trip to Baden-Baden

If you are looking for a relaxing, more luxurious day trip from Strasbourg, Baden-Baden is the destination for you. 

This German town is well-known as a spa town. Thanks to its thermal baths, it has been a popular resort since the 19th century.

When you’re done relaxing, stroll around the charming city center of Baden-Baden.

How to get from Strasbourg to Baden-Baden?

The best way to get from Strasbourg to Baden-Baden is by Flixbus . A ride takes less than an hour, and tickets start at 5,99€ if you book in advance. 

Alternatively, you can take a train. There are more daily departures, and it takes approximately the same time to get to Baden-Baden. However, the tickets tend to be more expensive.

14. Day Trip to Frankfurt

Frankfurt is best known as the financial hub and home to the European Central Bank.

However, there’s more to Frankfurt than just the skyscrapers in the financial district.

Pedestrian city center, cobblestone streets, and colorful houses in the Römerberg. Join a free walking tour to learn more about the city’s history.

How to get from Strasbourg to Frankfurt?

You can either take a bus or a train.

Taking a train is the quicker option, as there is a direct train that takes under 2 hours to get to Frankfurt. But, it is more expensive than a bus. 

German and French trains serve this route, so I like to book my train tickets with Trainline , as it shows me all the trains operating the line so I can choose the one that works best for me!

I took a Flixbus to Frankfurt since it was significantly cheaper. The bus takes 4-5 hours, and you should wake up early to catch the first one.

It is a lot of driving for one day. However, if you catch the bus at 5:40 am, you have enough time to explore the city on a day trip!

15. day trip to metz.

Metz is a city rich in culture and history. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site applicant and a melting pot of French and German influence. 

Stroll around the city center, admire the stunning Metz Cathedral, and visit the impressive fortification Porte des Allemandes.

How to get to Metz from Strasbourg?

The cheapest way to get to Metz is to combine bus and train. 

Take a Flixbus to go to Metz. Tickets start at 4,99€, and the bus takes around 3 hours. The way back might be too early for some, as the last bus is at 16:45. 

A train goes from Metz to Strasbourg more often, and tickets start at 10€. Also, it is a quicker way to travel, as it takes on average under 2 hours.

16. Day trip to Nancy

Nancy is a city of majestic 18th-century architecture. The city is a real change from the half-timbered houses in Strasbourg. 

The main attraction is the 18th-century Place Stanislas. This grand square is decorated with gilded wrought-iron gates and splendid fountains.

You can take a Flixbus , it takes 2 hours and if you book in advance tickets start at 3,99€!

Alternatively, take a train! It takes 1.5 hours on average, and train tickets start at 10€ if you book in advance.

Yes, you can visit Paris on a day trip from Strasbourg!

Paris needs no introduction, as it is the most visited city in the world!

Have a picnic in front of the Eiffel Tower, wander the cobblestone streets of Montmartre, or stroll along the Seine River.

How to get to Paris from Strasbourg on a day trip?

You need to take a train. A train from Strasbourg to Paris takes approximately 2 hours and brings you to the Gare de l’Est. 

These trains can get very expensive. OUIGO trains are the best value for money, and you can find tickets for under 20€! Book in advance to get the best price.

Flixbus goes from Strasbourg to Paris, but the journey is too long to make it worth it for a day trip. However, if you are spending a weekend in Paris, Flixbus is usually the more affordable option.

18. Day trip to Luxembourg

Luxembourg is an excellent idea for a one day trip from Strasbourg! Public transport is free in the country so you can see all the main attractions in one day. 

Luxembourg is a UNESCO World Heritage site , so make sure to visit the impressive fortifications and the city center that remained virtually untouched for centuries. 

How to get to Luxembourg from Strasbourg on a day trip?

Theoretically, it is possible to get Flixbus from Strasbourg to Luxembourg. The bus takes around 3 hours to get to Luxembourg, but the departure times are not the best for a day trip. 

Instead, go by train! It takes approximately the same time, but train departure times are more convenient for a day trip.

Public transport in Alsace

Public transport in the region is reliable and works pretty well. If you don’t have a car, you can reach all the places I recommend by train or bus. 

Trains from Strasbourg

Trains are the most popular form of public transport in Grand Est and you’ll be spoilt with options of where to go from Strasbourg by train.

TER trains are regional trains connecting Strasbourg to most towns in the region. Check out the TER network map to see all the destinations. 

It’s good to know that you can take a bike on TER trains for free!

For international train trips, I book my tickets on Trainline . They show you a whole trip through multiple countries by researching multiple operators.

That way, you can book just one ticket on the Trainline platform instead of analyzing each operator’s website.

How to save money on trains in Alsace?

Book your tickets in advance to take advantage of first-minute tickets. Tickets are up to 70% cheaper if you book in advance! 

TIP: First-minute prices expire 2 days before the travel date, regardless of if they are sold out.

If you plan to travel often in the region, you can save 50% on train tickets with Fluo Card . The card costs 20€ (if you are under 26, it is just 1€!) and is valid for a year. 

But pay attention, it is 50% of the full ticket price, not the first-minute price.

Booking in advance is still the best way to save money, but it might be difficult in the high season or on the weekends.

Local bus lines in Alsace

Local bus lines are the only public transport going to most Alsace villages. They are affordable and comfortable. 

Unlike regular city buses, these buses are usually a long-distance type of bus, which makes them considerably more comfortable than a typical public transport bus. 

Fluo Grand Est 67 network can be an alternative to train for some day trips, as it is more affordable. One way ticket is just 2,50€!

Long-distance buses from Strasbourg

Finally, we have long-distance buses like Flixbus and Blablabus . They are the most affordable way to reach far destinations like Paris or Frankfurt. 

Long-distance buses are a cheaper alternative to trains. At the same time, they take longer to reach their destination.

Therefore, you won’t be able to visit Paris on a day trip by Flixbus, but you can if you travel by train!

The Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park is one of the largest national parks in France. It boasts a rare combination of mountains and wetlands along with a rich array of flora and fauna. Actually, its rich biodiversity prompted UNESCO to classify the park as a World Biosphere Reserve.

Le Lac Blanc or White Lake stands at an altitude of 3461 feet (1055 meters) deep in the Vosges mountains. It’s most stunning feature is its crystal clear blue water, which is a result of the white sand at the bottom of the lake.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Le Lac Blanc is the ideal destination. In winter, ski enthusiasts come to enjoy the endless number of zig-zagging slopes. In contrast, the summer months are popular with hikers . If you’re in the area, head over to Le Lac Noir or Black Lake, located downstream from Le Lac Blanc. Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle is one of the most impressive sites in Alsace. Built during the Middle Ages, it was used to scout the routes in the region. But, the castle fell to Swedish forces during the Thirty Years War and burned to the ground. Since then, Haut-Koenigsbourg castle has undergone a magnificent restoration.

Getting there: Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle is 34 miles (55 kilometers) south of Strasbourg. Access it by car using these driving directions or public transportation. If you decide to use public transportation, first take the train from Strasbourg to Sélestat.

No trip to Strasbourg is complete without a visit to Strasbourg to the Wine Route. Spend the day sampling some of the best wine in France while admiring colorful villages set against breathtaking landscapes.

This legendary wine route starts in Marlenheim and finishes in Thann. Although there are lots of things to do, the best stops include Colmar, Ribeauvillé, and Obernai. In fact, there are so many things to do in Colmar , it alone can be a day trip from Strasbourg.

Getting there: To visit the Alsace Wine Route from Strasbourg, it’s best to rent a car or bike. If you rent a bike, take it with you on the train from Strasbourg to Colmar or Obernai. From there you will find clearly labeled signs for the Wine Route.

5. Mont Sainte Odile-Ottrott

For centuries Mont Sainte Odile was a monastery and convent dedicated to the patron saint of Alsace, Odile. Surrounded by castles that were once a first line of defense, it’s located high in the Vosges mountains. At the base of the church lies one of the most mysterious monuments in the region, the Pagan Wall. This ancient wall contains 300,000 stone blocks that stretch for 6.8 miles (11 kilometers). Today, the church remains active , while the rest of the site has been converted into a hotel.

The best way to visit Mont Sainte Odile is by hiking one of the many trails that lead to the top. The most popular trails start in Barr, Obernai, and Rosheim. At the top, enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the region. On a clear day, you can even see Strasbourg’s Notre Dame Cathedral!

Getting there: If you prefer to use public transportation, there is a bus from Strasbourg to Mont Sainte Odile .

6. l’Île-du-Rohrschollen

Île-du-Rohrschollen is an island 6 miles (10 kilometers) south of Strasbourg. Flanked by the Rhine, you’ll find a unique ecosystem composed of forests, wetlands, and meadows . There are four trails of varying lengths that circle the island, which can be explored on foot or by bike. So, if you are looking for a relaxing day trip from Strasbourg, then l’Île-du-Rohrschollen is for you! 

Getting there: There is no public transportation that goes to the island. The closest bus stop is Eurofret via bus 27. From there, you’ll need to walk a leisurely 40 minutes on foot. The easiest way to explore the island is to rent a bike or a car .

Across the Rhine lies one of Germany’s most well-known destinations, the Black Forest. Markedly, there are endless fascinating things to do in the area, making it one of the best day trips from Strasbourg. Regardless, Titisee should be on the top of your list.

To explain, the town lies on a marvelous lake (of the same name) that offers activities for every type of traveler. Views of the lake alone are worth a stop. In the winter, Titisee is popular with skiers and becomes home to the largest ski jump in Germany. The summer months welcome hikers, watersports enthusiasts, and families to the water park. Contrarily, there are several spa resorts around the lake if you just want to relax.

Getting there: Titisee is 2 hours from Strasbourg via public transportation. While there is no direct train, there are several trains or buses that go to Freiburg. From Freiburg, you will find plenty of onward transportation. Alternatively, you may drive (2 hrs, 20 mins), which is more convenient.

A day or two in Freiburg is also a nice treat.

8. Le Donon

Le Donon sits at 3310 ft (1009 meters) in the northern Vosges mountains, making it the highest peak in the area. The significance of this summit dates to the Bronze Age. Artifacts show that Le Donon was once a temporary refuge . At the top, there is an archeological trail with signs explaining the history of the site.

Getting there: From Strasbourg, get to Le Donon by one of the many hiking trails, car , or public transportation. If you decide to go with the latter, take the train from Strasbourg to Schirmeck (42 min). Book train tickets here . From Schirmeck, there are several trails that lead to the top.

9. Luxembourg City

Like Strasbourg, Luxembourg City is one of the de facto capitals of the European Union. And, given its relatively small size, it’s easy to visit in a single day.

For a complete tour of the city, the Vauban Circular Walk is the best option. This 3-hour (2.7 mi/4.5 km) circuit passes by historic sites like the Three Towers, Fort Thüngen, and the Casemates du Bock. You will even have beautiful panoramic views of the Neümunster Abbey! The circuit is well labeled, and there are signs explaining the significance of each monument.

10. The Rhine via Véloroute

The Rhine Véloroute is a 820 mile (1320 kilometer) cycling path that runs along the entirety of the Rhine. From Strasbourg you can cycle either to l’Île-du-Rohrschollen or Kehl (Germany).

If you plan on going to Kehl, Jardin des Deux Rives is a great place to stop for a picnic . There are also a yummy restaurant on the German side of the park.

A Brief History of Strasbourg

Much of modern Strasbourg is a particular mix of cultures that reflects its complex history. In fact, it has changed nationalities so many times that locals identify with the region, Alsace, rather than France!

Strasbourg’s fascinating story began in the 5th century when it was captured by the Franks. Then, it remained under strict control until its citizens were granted freedom in 1262. Not shortly after, in 1681, Louis XIV of France seized the city for its strategic location.

After 200 years, it became home to the French national anthem, “ La Marseillaise .” Germany then annexed it after the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. World Wars I and II saw intense battles over Strasbourg. As a result, Strasbourg changed from France to Germany, and finally back to France in 1944.

Today, the city is a symbol of reconciliation in Europe. It’s also home to the European Parliament and one of the capitals of the European Union.

Eguisheim may not be the easiest place to reach using public transport, but it is a worthy day trip from Strasbourg. You first need to go to Colmar, and from there take a bus to the neighboring village of Wettolsheim.

From there, you can walk to Eguisheim. It is much better to go here as part of a guided tour of the Alsace Region to make the most of your time.

Still, it is a fantastic place to visit,  with its half-timbered houses circling out from the Château Saint-Léon right in the heart of the village. The 13th-century castle is now a church, but you can still see the remains of the structure that once stood there.

Wander through the narrow streets and feel like you’re journeying through a fairy tale. Aside from the half-timbered houses, vineyards are also in abundance in Eguisheim.

Along the hills, you’ll also find the Château du Hohlandsbourg or the ruins of Husseren-les-Château­x.

Easily reached by train within 2 to 3 hours, Frankfurt is one of the best day trips from Strasbourg that takes you across the border.

Situated by the River Main, the old imperial city of Frankfurt is an important commercial and economic center. Marvel at the North American influences of the buildings in the banking quarter.

This part is also nicknamed ‘Mainhattan’ or ‘Chicago on the Main’. It is a global city that’s often listed and among the best places to live. As a cultural center, it is best-known for hosting the annual Frankfurt Book Fair.

Located South of Strasbourg, the Haut Koenigsbourg Castle was built in the 12th century. It is also one of the best castles in France .

At some point, the Habsburgs and Wilhelm II owned it and lived here.

The castle was extensively restored in the early 1900s by Wilhelm II, focusing on its Germanic roots, reflecting the lines of its original fortifications. Tour the castle and admire its 20th-century interiors, or wander around the property.

There is a tavern on-site and also a snack bar, but you may also pack a picnic and pick a spot in the parklands surrounding the castle. The castle is a great day tour from Strasbourg. It is an easy 20-minute ride away by train.

From March to December , a shuttle bus runs from the Sélestat train station to Haut Koenigsbourg Castle.

Kaysersberg may not be as popular as the other town and villages in the Alsace , but it remains to be a lovely Strasbourg day trip.

Start your visit here at the picture-perfect  Fontaine Constantin, which is surrounded by half-timbered houses. Wander through this pretty village and spend time along the Weiss riverfront.

Here, you’ll find charming old fashioned houses especially along the  Ancien Lavoir or Pont Fortifie area.

Another must-see in Kaysersberg is the beautifully restored 13th-century Château du Hohlandsbourg, which is also a museum. Kaysersberg can be reached by a local bus from Colmar.

This means you have to board a train from Strasbourg to Colmar first. Total travel time is about an hour and surely worth it.

Ribeauvillé is a lovely Strasbourg day tour that’s best visited along with other parts of the Alsace Wine Route. This charming little village has definitely more to offer aside from the vineyards.

A quick stroll along the village will show you its colorful houses, most of them surrounded by pretty gardens . A walk through the old town meanwhile will lead you to medieval castles and churches .

The summer months like July and August are among the best times of the year to visit Ribeauvillé as the vineyard views against the clear sky are quite stunning.

The picturesque Riquewihr is regarded as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (one of the most beautiful small, rural villages).

It is one of the best Strasbourg day trips even if it wasn’t easily accessible by public transport. You’d have to take a 30 minute trip to Colmar by train, then a quick bus ride to Kayserberg, and another 15 minutes to Riquewihr.

If it’s your first time, make it part of a guided tour instead. Riquewihr is the biggest producer of Riesling wine.

Along the village, you’ll find a number of tasting rooms, wine shops, and wine stubs. Wine stubs are wine lounges that are similar to pubs, which also serve food to go with the wine .

The medieval town of Freiburg is another great day trip from Strasbourg that’s across the border. Officially called Freiburg in Breisgau, it is situated on the edge of the Black Forest.

Here, you’ll come across canals and little streams that seem to appear out of nowhere. These waterworks even run down specially made channels in the streets and sidewalks.

There’s a local legend that says that if you step in one accidentally, you must marry a Freiburger. This town is perfect for a leisurely stroll ss there’s a lot to see. Stop at playgrounds, wander into little courtyards, or simply bask in the sunshine.

After all, this town is also known as the sunniest spot in Germany. From Strasbourg, it only takes 2 hours by train to reach Freiburg.

Baden-Baden is a 19th-century spa town that’s also on the edge of the Black Forest. For 200 years, it is also known as the gateway for France and Germany.

While here, be sure to relax in one of the thermal spas. It is also a must to try some of the local food , such as Käsespätzle (cheesy egg noodles topped with fried onions) or Maultaschen (a sort of German ravioli, often served in broth).

These are best paired with local wine. Baden-Baden is one of the easiest day trips from Strasbourg as it only takes 30 minutes to get here by train.

10. Black Forest

A visit to the Black Forest has to be one of the best day trips from Strasbourg. Getting here takes two hours by train from Strasbourg, but absolutely worth it.

The Black Forest Open Air Museum is quite an experience. A visit here gives you a sense of what it was like in area 300 or 400 years ago.

Check out the old houses filled with period furniture and tools. Watch the demonstrations of old crafts and skills done by costumed volunteers. Be sure to dine in the massive restaurant and have a slice of the eponymous cake.

Here’s a list of the best day trips from Strasbourg, France, so that you can experience all that this area has to offer.

Colmar is a true fairytale destination, filled with flowers in the warmer months and one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Alsace in winter (the Colmar Christmas Market). Colmar is filled with cobblestone streets, medieval buildings, and half-timbered houses. It has many pretty little neighborhoods, including Little Venice, where you can coast through the picturesque canals in a cute little rowboat.

2. Riquewihr

Riquewihr is hands down one of the most beautiful Alsace villages . It’s just under 70km from Strasbourg but because it’s small, it can be difficult to get to directly. You’ll have to take a train to Colmar and then a bus to Riquewihr or take a guided tour to reach it.

Riquewihr has been one of the more popular destinations for Strasbourg day trips for years because of its wine. There are numerous wineries and vineyards within reach of the town, making it a must-stop on the Wine Route of Alsace .

This town is also incredibly well-preserved, with numerous 16th-century buildings and half-timbered houses as well as fortified walls that have lasted since medieval times. 4. Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg

This isn’t a town; instead, it’s one of the most beautiful French castles that you’ll ever see. Located about 62 km from Strasbourg, it can be a little challenging to reach via public transport, but it is an easy drive in a car, taking about 50 minutes. This makes it a good choice for a day trip from Strasbourg by car.

Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg was originally built in the 12th century and saw centuries of conflict and upheaval. It was destroyed and then abandoned during the Thirty Years War and rebuilt by the German Emperor Wilhelm II in the early 20th century.

The restorers did an exceptional job and returned this masterpiece to its former glory. Today it offers stunning views over the landscape to the Vosges on clear days. The inside is filled with stunning artwork, armor, and quirks that will make you feel as if you’re stepping into a working medieval castle.

5. Hogeburg Abey – Mont Saint-Odile

The Hohenburg Abbey is one of the best day trips from Strasbourg. It’s located on the top of Mont Odile, in the Vosges Mountains, and is one of the most important religious sites in the entire region.

The abbey was built in the early 7th century in honor of the patron saint of Alsace, Odile. Still today, pilgrims from all over make the journey to pay their respects to the tomb of the Saint. Perpetual adoration has been practiced in the abbey since 1931.

Mont Odile is located about 43km from Strasbourg, and you can get there by car or indirectly by train and bus. In addition to the tomb, the site contains the Chapel of Angels, and the Chapel of Tears, iconic symbols of the abbey’s past.

Even if you aren’t religious, Mont Saint-Odile is a must-see site. Set above the surrounding natural landscape, it looks over a beautiful, forested area, ideal for hiking and other nature experiences.

7.The German Fort of Mutzig

The  Fort de Mutzig  is one of the most recent historic sites open for visitors. Located near the town of Mutzig on the summit of Breuchstals Mountain, it was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II in the late 1900s. At this time in history, Alsace was under German control after the Franco-Prussian War. 

The fort was built to defend German Strasbourg against high explosives, which were a recent addition to warfare tools. The fortifications and installations inside the fort were cutting edge for the time, and you can explore some of these new inventions on a guided tour.

The fort could not be used during WW2: being the Alsace back to the French side, the cannons were pointing in the wrong direction!

Day trips from Strasbourg, France give you the opportunity to explore the beautiful Alsace region.  Even better is the train system that makes it wonderfully convenient to hop all over the area.  So, grab your camera, buy your tickets, and enjoy these scenic day trips from Strasbourg.

Strasbourg: The Ideal Home Base

My home base while I was visiting the Alsace area of France, my home base was Strasbourg.  The city is rich with historic spots and quaint nooks and crannies.  I spent several days exploring the sites, then just wandering the streets and shopping in the grocery stores trying out interesting little cafes.  Check out the  Best Things To Do in Strasbourg France  if you are looking to put together your own itinerary.

One of the big benefits of this home base is that Strasbourg Train Station is fairly easy walking distance from the historic center and a lot of the hotels in the area.  This made it especially easy to get ready in the morning, walk 15 minutes, and be on the train and off to whatever day trip I had planned.

So, here, I’ll share with you my favorite day trips from Strasbourg, and the info you need to plan one yourself!

2 Easy Day Trips from Strasbourg by Train:

The following two towns are perfect to visit from Strasbourg because both offer beautiful, historic town centers.  These town centers are easily reached with direct trains from the Strasbourg Train Station.

Day Trips from Strasbourg: Colmar

Colmar’s long history.

The first of my day trips from Strasbourg, France was to the city of Colmar.  Part of the reason is Colmar’s history.  While no one is certain when exactly Colmar was first founded, the first recorded mention of it is attributed to Louis the Pious in a land transaction in 823AD.  Over a millenia of history means that Colmar has landmarks from nearly every major age of art and architecture.  The list of important figures from history that have resided in or visited Strasbourg is extensive.  It includes such names as  Louis the Pious, Pope Gregory, Emperor Frederick II, Voltaire, Charles X,  Kaiser Wilhelm II, and Bartholdi of Statue of Liberty fame.

Why to visit

While, yes, I love the history, what Colmar is probably best known for is the postcard perfect views around seemingly every corner.  By the end of my visit, I really was a bit like, “Yeah, yeah, scenic half-timbered house with waterfalls of flowers along the canal.  Yep, that’s everywhere.”  It’s really a pretty great problem to have.  You will burn out your camera.  If you are using your phone to take pictures (like I did), honestly, take a portable charger.

There is a large pedestrian section of Colmar’s historic area, and a lot of quaint little specialty shops.  The covered market was also one of my favorites during my time in France.  While not huge, it offered a diverse selection of foods.  This included several with dine-in options.  A great way to take a rest during your day trip!

I was also fascinated by the history of Auguste Bartholdi in Colmar.  I knew very little about the background and other works of the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty.  Colmar, however, provides both a museum housed in his former residence, and also other pieces of his work throughout the town.

Main Sites and Attractions

There is a lot packed into a small area in Colmar.   From the visitor’s center, you can walk all over the historic area.  Here is my list of favorite things to see:

• Pfister House – A famous landmark of Colmar, this house was built in 1537 with medieval design, and then decorated with Renaissance style paintings on the façade.
• Adolph House – Just around the corner from the Pfister House, the discovery that this may be the oldest building in Colmar was only made in the 19th century when the Gothic windows were uncovered.
• Former Guard House – Beside the Adolph House, this building became a guard house in 1575.  There are beautiful Renaissance elements at the entrance.
• Tanner’s District – The 17th & 18th century half-timbered houses of this district were meticulously restored and are incredibly picturesque.
• “Koïfhus” former Custom’s House – The oldest local public building in the city, this building has been restored beautifully.
• Covered Market – I love, love, LOVE food markets.  Especially the ones in Europe.  This one is very well stocked and has several stands with seating to eat on site.  Definitely worth a stop.  Also a Bartholdi statue is on the exterior south-west corner.
• Little Venice – In this small area of Colmar, the buildings line the canal just like the famous Italian city.  In peak season you may have to elbow other tourists out of the way to get a photo!
• Bruat Fountain – This Bartholdi fountain was destroyed by the Nazis but rebuilt after the war.
• Parc du Champ de Mars – The Park holds the Bruat fountain and is a lovely shady spot on a hot day.  It’s also conveniently located between the train station and the visitor’s center.
• Statue of Liberty – 3.7km north of the Visitor’s Center, this is definitely out of the way.  (Reachable by #7 bus.) But it’s also a pretty surreal thing to see another Statue of Liberty by Bartholdi right in the center of a traffic circle!

How to Day Trip from Strasbourg to Colmar by Train:

Roughly every 30 minutes a TGV train travels from Strasbourg train station to Colmar, and the cost varies between $15-$23 for a ticket.  The trip takes only about 30 minutes between the two cities, and requires no changing of trains.  I was traveling in May and had no problem just showing up to the station and buying a ticket on the next train. This meant I could decide to go home when I felt ready.

My advice is, once you arrive at the train station, take the #7 bus from the train station to Colmar Theatre.  Just behind the theatre is the Colmar visitor’s center, which makes an excellent place to pick up a map and get started.

Day Trips from Strasbourg: Nancy

Nancy:  A center of history and intrigue

A fortified town has existed in roughly this location since 1050AD.  Nancy has been a key location in European history throughout the centuries.  In medieval times the Battle of Nancy saw the defeat of Duke Charles of Burgundy and installation of René II, Duke of Lorraine, as ruler.  From 1736 through 1766, under the Duchy of Lorraine, Stanslaus Lesczynski, Nancy developed impressive Baroque architecture and culture.  The Place Stanislas was constructed in this time period.  During the time of the French Revolution, the Nancy affair, a mutiny within the French military, occurred in this city.  During WWII, Nancy was occupied by Nazi Germany, and liberated in September 1944 at the Battle of Nancy.

What I liked best about visiting Nancy, was that with one self-developed walking tour, I was able to explore the Medieval old town area and the Baroque neighborhood mostly developed under Charles III.  With a little poking around I found my way to the hidden garden atop Porte de la Citadelle, and a short stroll from there took me the more formal gardens, Parc de la Pepiniere.  In the Charles III area of Nancy there are beautiful churches, shopping areas, and even a covered market to grab a treat for now or later.  All that aside from Place Stanislas which is nearly worth the trip by itself.

• Place Stanislas – I’ve seen quite a few beautiful European squares in my travels, so I wasn’t expecting to be as touched by the beauty of Place Stanslas as I was.  Completely worth seeing, and I would take the day trip from Strasbourg again just to sit in the Place and have a leisurely coffee.
• Porte de la Craffe – This is the oldest fortification in the city.  Be sure to walk through it as the brick interior with the entrances coming together is very pretty.
• Porte de la Citadelle & its secret garden – This 17th century gate has a special addition: entered off Rue Sellier, an inconspicuous set of steps lead to a quite little garden over the gate.
• Parc de la Pépiniére – A park initially began as a nursery to grow trees to line the streets.  Today there are a number of attractions within, the rose garden with peacocks was a favorite stop of mine.
• Credit Lyonnais – If you can duck inside the bank for a few minutes, the art nouveau stained glass ceiling is stunning.
• Cathédrale – The Cathedrale on Rue Saint Georges seems more simple than many of the big European churches, but the vast, echoing interior is striking.  Definitely walk to the front and look back (and up) at the organ which is a monument in its own right.
• Marché Couvert – I love covered markets, I keep saying it!    I stopped in here to pick up a couple of treats to augment my in-room dinner that night.
• Brasserie Excelsior – this restaurant is a gorgeous work of Art Nouveau, and a historic monument of its own.  It is also right across from the train station, so makes a great first or last stop in Nancy.

How to Day Trip from Strasbourg to Nancy by Train

The direct train from Strasbourg to Nancy takes approximately an hour and a half.  The cost is between $25 and $40 depending on what time you choose to travel.  There are a number of trains throughout the day, and at high travel times they depart about once per hour in each direction.  This gives you a lot of flexibility when planning your day.

I instantly fell in love with Strasbourg when I visited, it’s probably my favourite place in France because of its perfect combination of French culture and German culture thanks to its location right by the German border.

We based ourselves in Strasbourg for one week so we had plenty of time to explore the city but also to plan a few day trips from Strasbourg to the surrounding Alsace region and into Germany.

There are countless Strasbourg day trip options in the region, whether you’re a wine lover, a history buff, a foodie or you just love to explore quaint European towns (that’s me!)

A day trip from Strasbourg is also a great option if you’re in the area for one of the famous European Christmas markets , Strasbourg and the surrounding Alsace region really put on a show during the festive season.

Top day trips from Strasbourg, France

A day trip from strasbourg to colmar.

I first went to Colmar in winter of 2018 and fell in love with the colourful timber frame buildings and charming cobbled streets.

Having experienced Colmar in winter and summer, I can safely say that both are equally as beautiful. Seeing the colourful houses dusted in snow was magical but also the flower-covered streets in summer are gorgeous too.

Colmar is an easy drive less than 1 hour south of Strasbourg and it’s also one of the easiest day trips from Strasbourg by train. There are 42 routes per day and they take on average 31 minutes between Colmar and Strasbourg. Visit the SNCF website for times or find more ways to get to Colmar .

I also included Eguisheim on my Strasbourg to Colmar day trip as it’s an easy nearby addition - I actually cycled there along the river path!

Strasbourg to Bergheim day trip

Around 40 minutes from Strasbourg is the charming commune of Bergheim.

Bergheim was significantly less busy than Colmar, Kaysersberg or Riquewihr and I highly recommend visiting Bergheim from Strasbourg if you’re looking for a more authentic Alsace village experience.

We found parking to be free at the Parc de Stationnement which is right by the High Gate entrance to the town.

Strasbourg day trip to Ribeauville

I’ve included Ribeauville on this list because I was so desperate to visit and see this charming colourful town with its castle on the hill. However the day we visited in September was a huge medieval festival and the town was closed off to cars and there was no parking for miles!

So I will return one day and visit I hope!

Strasbourg to Riquewihr day trip

Located just under an hour south from Strasbourg and into the countryside of the Alsace region is Riquewihr.

Riquewihr is probably the town I thought was the prettiest town in Alsace, however it was also the busiest and very small! So I would recommend visiting in the off season or arriving early in the morning - not mid-afternoon as we did!

Enter the town through the archway of the town hall and follow the Rue du General de Gaulle to see the beautiful architecture, the thriving cafes, the street train and the wonderful smelling bakeries!

The rich yellows, greens and oranges of the buildings here made it such a vibrant place to explore and it’s so small that it’s easy to explore on foot!

The town is pedestrianised so you will need to park at one of the several car parks dotted around the outside of the town walls.

Strasbourg day trip to Kaysersberg-Vignoble

Probably my favourite of the Alsace villages because it’s beautiful but also much bigger than Riquewihr.

Exploring Kaysersberg was much easier with larger car parks, a larger central town area and plenty of charming streets and colourful architecture to explore.

We arrived here in the morning and did nothing except wander around for 2 hours and eat fresh pastries!

However Kaysersberg is a great base if you want to see more of the Alsace wine region, you’ll see plenty of vineyards surrounding the town as you drive in.

Strasbourg to Eguisheim

Eguisheim is a small town I visited on my first trip back in 2018 and it's the town that’s said to be the inspiration for Beauty and the Beast.

It’s very small and I recommend visiting as part of your Colmar day trip from Strasbourg since the two are nearby - I hired a bike in Colmar to cycle to Eguisheim and back.

Eguisheim is a medieval village made up of concentric streets in the old town, so you can walk in circles in the tiny area.

The most famous street in Eguisheim is Rue du Rempart S with the classic crooked house view.

The whole village old town is full of remarkably preserved medieval buildings which are incredibly picturesque.

You’ll also see the colourful roof of Chapelle Saint-Leon IX in the centre which is beautiful both inside and out!

Strasbourg to Obernai

Obernai is less than 30 minutes from Strasbourg city centre and is a larger town offering medieval buildings, beautiful architecture and plenty of alternative restaurants and bars outside of Strasbourg.

It’s a popular stop for tours of the Alsace wine route for this reason.

Of course if you’re a wine lover, appreciator and dabbler, a wine tour in the Alsace region, famous for its Riesling, is a must-do one day trip from Strasbourg.

This full day wine tour includes 3 different wineries with 2 afternoon tasting stops in the medieval villages of Ribeauvillé and Riquewihr.

If you’re looking for places to visit around Strasbourg, this is a truly fascinating day trip from Strasbourg and I only found out about it last minute while we were actually there.

Being big history fans, I studied it and Taylor’s relatives fought in World War II. We both really wanted to visit this famous (or infamous) historic location at the Maginot Line.

The Maginot Line is a very famous French defence line of fortifications which runs along the French/German border and cost a significant amount of money in the early 20th century. There are 900 miles of underground bunkers and fortifications which the French were sure would defend them from the Germans. However the Maginot Line is famous for ultimately failing to stop the Germans, who simply went around it in a tactic known as the Blitzkrieg.

Labelled as ‘Maginot Line Fort Schoenenbourg’ on Google Maps, it’s about 1 hour drive north from Strasbourg.

Parking is free and it’s tucked away in a wooded area. 

Going inside is spectacular to experience. It’s so huge, we walked miles underground and there really is a whole city built down there to house the french soldiers for months on end. From bedrooms and kitchens to hospitals, pharmacies, shoe repairs, gyms and more.

Tickets are just 9 euros for adults and 5 euros for children - great value considering we were down there for 3 hours+.

It’s absolutely fascinating, I highly recommend visiting. Just make sure you take warm clothes - it’s cold underground!

Day trips from Strasbourg to Germany

A day trip from strasbourg to baden baden.

Baden Baden is a completely different experience for a Strasbourg day trip, not only because it’s a day trip from Strasbourg into Germany but also because Baden Baden is famous for being a spa town.

Visit the famous and absolutely stunning Caracalla Spa or the Friedrichsbad Spa. Both are amazing spas but Caracalla Spa should be your choice for a more modern bathhouse experience, surrounded by forest and in a huge complex with indoor and outdoor bathing.

Friedrichsbad Spa is a more traditional experience, housed in a classic 19th century bathhouse with beautiful ornate and almost stately architecture. The main thermal pool sits in a huge domed tower and the whole spa complex is just breathtaking.

A day trip to Baden Baden is definitely an opportunity to treat yourself and it’s only 1 hour from Strasbourg!

Day trips from Strasbourg to the Black Forest

I’ve only visited the Black Forest in the summer but there is so much to do there that I honestly think that a day trip isn’t enough!

With hiking, biking, beautiful German towns , stunning lakes, toboggan rides, waterfalls, museums, a wealth of cuckoo clocks and of course plenty of food and beverage stops on the way too!

I would suggest visiting in the summer months and picking a small town from which to rent a bike or head off exploring - there are so many trails the second you’re outside of a town area.

A personal favourite that’s special to our family is the Ottenhofen im Schwarzwald area and Seebach. Here there’s a great range of restaurants, hotels, bike hire and easy-moderate trails and adventures to go on. Plus it’s just 45 minutes from Strasbourg!

Day trips from Strasbourg to Switzerland

If you’re looking for cities close to Strasbourg to visit on a day trip, I recommend Basel.

I flew into Basel to visit Colmar on the first trip I took to the Alsace region and I can not only attest to the brilliant train service between Basel and Strasbourg which is only a 1 hour 20 minute journey, but I also got stranded by a snow storm in Basel and was able to spend some time there exploring too!

If you’re planning a day trip from Strasbourg by train, Basel is a great option as it’s often referred to as the cultural centre of Switzerland.

More About Strasbourg

Why should Strasbourg be on your bucket list? I could name a few reasons…

• It is one of the most picturesque regions in France. Think timbered houses, dramatic, gothic cathedrals, quaint riverbank paths.
• The city is uniquely laid out in that the center is located on the Grand Île, translated to big island. The River III that runs through the city also has a second branch, Canal du Faux-Rempart, that wraps its way around the city center, or Old Town. This forms the Grand Île, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the first time a city center was given the title.

Sunrise at Barrage Vauban

The Barrage Vauban, or Vauban Dam, on the River III is a covered bridge built in the late 1600s as a city defense structure.

The best part about this spot is the large rooftop terrace that offers an incredible view of the “Pont Couverts”, La Petite France, and the Strasbourg Cathedral in the city skyline.

The terrace and bridge are completely free to visit. The terrace is open at different times throughout the year:

• September to October: 8 am to 7 pm
• November to February: 8:30 am to 4 pm
• March to April: 8 am to 7 pm
• May to August: 7:15 to 9 pm

You can access the terrace via stairs or through the accessible elevator.

Ponts Couverts

The Ponts Couverts, or Covered Bridges, are an impressive collection of bridges and towers on the River III built as a defensive structure in the 13th century. They once were covered with roofs but they have since deteriorated.

The bridges cross the points at which the canals of the city all meet to form the River III.

La Petite France

La Petite France is Strasbourg’s historic neighborhood. You will notice a sudden shift that truly feels like a jump in time when you move from Strasbourg’s contemporary museums and classic French buildings to what is the preserved, medieval hamlet of the city.

The architecture, narrow, cobblestone streets and peaceful canals make it one of the most romantic areas of Strasbourg. It is a city attraction, so you will find lots of tourists here and charming souvenir shops.

La Petite France is also a great place to take off and explore Strasbourg by boat. A boat tour is a unique experience and perspective from which to discover Strasbourg seeing as the whole historic city center is on an island! Circle the Grand Île and get one-of-a-kind views from panoramic boats.

Strasbourg Cathedral

The absolute must-see in Strasbourg is the cathedral. And luckily it is the second tallest building in France, so you can see it from nearly any spot in the city!

Fun fact, it was actually the tallest building in the world from 1647 to 1874. The Strasbourg Cathedral is truly breathtaking in all meanings of the word.

The square surrounding the cathedral is not very wide, so it is difficult to get a full picture or view of it without having to strain your neck!

You can visit the free for inside during two periods of the day: from 8:30 to 11:15 a.m and 12:45 to 5:45 p.m from Monday to Saturday. Instead on Sunday and holidays, it can only be visited from 2 to 5:15 p.m.

The reason for the gap in visiting hours during the week is because a special show takes place during the closing period to which you have to buy tickets. Visit one of Strasbourg’s Museums

Like any good European city, Strasbourg has a variety of museums to choose from. You can visit the Alsatian Museum to discover what life was like in the Alsatian region in the 18th and 19th century. This museum is interesting because you walk through the museum as if they were the real rooms of an Alsatian house, with objects, artifacts, toys and all the typical things you would find that they truly used back then.

Strasbourg also has its own history museum housed in the former city slaughterhouse. These exhibits are more traditional for telling each aspect of the city’s cultural, political and economic history but there are also interactive moments that make it fun and engaging.

Strasbourg has a whole host of unique museums that there is truly something for everyone: the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Fine Arts Museum, the Oeuvre Notre Dame Museum (medieval works), the Museum of Seismology, the Château Vodou, which has the largest collection of West African vodoo artifacts in the world – so as you can see, the list goes on.

Palais Rohan

The Palais Rohan, royal palace of Strasbourg is neighbors with the Strasbourg Cathedral. It was built for the Prince-Bishop of Strasbourg in just 10 years from 1732-1742.

Within the palace are three different museums – the Archaelogical Museum, Fine Arts Museum and Decorative Arts Museum.

You can visit the grand courtyard for free.

It is closed on Tuesday and Thursday. Every other day, you can visit from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 6 pm.

Parc de L’Orangerie

Every good European city has its central park, an oasis of greenery and fresh air to escape the bustle for a moment. Parc de l’Orangerie is no exception!

The park is located in the northern part of the city, about a 25 minute walk from the city center. Check out the lakes, villas and – my favorite part – the storks!

The most unique thing about the park is that it is basically a wildlife refuge for storks, one of the resident animals of the Alsace region and a cultural symbol. You will find storks in paintings, souvenirs, on buildings – in almost every place you can think of.

Storks were once near extinction and were introduced here to help them stabilize their population. Since 1971, 800 storks have been born!

At the park, the storks make their nests on top of what look like these kind of bald tree stumps. It is such an exciting and engaging experience to see them organically live within the city context and not in a zoo-like, restrictive nature.

Being the oldest park in Strasbourg, it is enjoyed in many different ways – a romantic date, a morning workout or a family outing.

Strasbourg Christmas Market

I visited Strasbourg in February of 2023, so unfortunately I missed the Christmas market period! However, Strasbourg and the Alsace region as a whole is known for its Christmas markets.

The Christmas market season usually runs from the end of November to Christmas Eve. And there is’t just one market. There are 13 spread across the Grand Île!

One of the most famous markets is in the city’s largest square, the Place Kléber. A huge Christmas tree selected from the Vosges Mountains is put up here every year!

Palais du Rhin & Place de la République

Strasbourg’s German influence comes to life in the neighborhood of Neustadt. It is just north of one of Strasbourg’s main squares, Place Broglie (where a huge city market takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays).

The area is completely contrasting to the city center, boasting German-style urban planning from the Prussian architecture to wide streets.

The stand-out structure is the Palais du Rhin. It is the historical residence of the Emperor, but has served multiple purposes since its construction. Then there is the Place de la République, the circular square that ties the historic city center to Neustadt.

Other impressive buildings in this area are the National Library, the second largest in France for number of books, and the university.

Enjoy French-German Sweets and Snacks

Strasbourg’s mixed German and French heritage means the culinary creations are twice delicious! I had to add this as a Strasbourg day trip activity because while you will find all the classic French pastry here, you will also find more German-influenced foods like gourmet pretzels and the well-known Alsatian cake Kugelhopf.

If you are interested in exploring Strasbourg’s food scene deeper, you could even opt to do a traditional food walking tour.

St. Thomas Church

I wouldn’t say you have to spend too much time at St. Thomas Church if you are only in Strasbourg for one day, but it is still a notable building and plays a key role in the city’s history, being the main Protestant church.

Janus Fountain

The Janus Fountain is definitely one of the more peculiarly things to see in Strasbourg. We just happened to walk by it and I was like “look at that fountain with a head in it!”

The fountain is in plain sight between the National Opera, Alsatian theater and Republic Square. Designed in 1988 in honor os Strasbourg’s 2,000 year anniversary, the Janus Fountain has lots of meaning to it. Read more in this mini article if you are curious.

Kammerzell House

Today a hotel, the Kammerzell House is one of the prettiest and most distinct buildings in Strasbourg. The ornate woodworking, detailed stain glass windows and hand-painted frescoes make it one of the most interesting pieces of architecture to admire.

Plus, it is right on the corner of the grand Strasbourg Cathedral square, making it a stand-out location.

European District

The last thing to check out on your Strasbourg day trip is the European District. Strasbourg may not seem like a major city but it actually has a huge role in international politics. It is home to the Council of Europe and other institutions of the European Union.

The European District is just outside the city center (about a 15 to 20 minute walk). You can do a free audio-guided walking tour like this one or enter the European Parliament for a free visit .

Explore nearby Alsatian villages

You may not have any more time to extend your Strasbourg day trip, but if you can, you should!

The extreme charm and allure of the Alsace region truly lies in the countryside villages. From spending one day in Colmar to visiting the pocket-sized medieval hamlets of Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé , the settings that inspired Beauty and the Beast, the Alsace region truly holds some special places to visit and ones that you can visit fast, just like a quick day trip to Strasbourg.

You can reach these towns with public transportation or book a day trip tour.

How to Reach Strasbourg

The most convenient transportation in planning a Strasbourg day trip is the train. The Strasbourg train station is well-serviced by all of France and even surrounding areas in Germany. Plus, it is right in the city center, so you can just hop off the train and go.

As an example, Strasbourg is about 2 hours from Paris by train.

Search for trains on Omio or Trainline to compare times available and prices between multiple different companies.

Renting a car is not the cheapest option for visiting Strasbourg in one day, but it is a more flexible option for those with a looser and longer France itinerary. It gives you the possibility to move when and where you want, so if you want to explore the rest of Alsace, you can do so on your own time.

Strasbourg is well connected by highway to major cities in France. But a factor to consider is parking. In the city center, parking is paid everywhere, so factor that into your road trip budget .

Companies like Flixbus offer trips to Strasbourg by coach bus. The convenience of this option depends on which city is your starting point. You could find coach buses from all over Europe going to Strasbourg, but that would obviously take longer than a day trip.

It is likely not the quickest way to get to Strasbourg if you only have one day, so I would only bookmark this option if you are a budget traveler trying to save money and already know your dates or have flexible travel dates.

Closest airports to Strasbourg

If you are planning a quick European city break to the Strasbourg area, here’s a cheap flight hack !

Instead of looking at principal airports (Paris, Strasbourg, etc.) check out cheaper airports like EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (80 miles) in Switzerland or, like I flew into, Flughafen Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport (37 miles) in Germany in the black forest regions. These airports are actually all closer to Strasbourg than Paris.

Of course, you will have to calculate a rental car or train transport to the city, but these airports are often so cheap with low-cost airline carriers that it is worth looking into the options to compare trip costs.

Getting Around Strasbourg

Walking is very likely your most convenient mode of transportation in Strasbourg. The city center is quite compact, so you can see a lot in on a Strasbourg day trip by just walking.

Of course, that doesn’t mean it isn’t tiring to walk all day long in a city, so wear comfortable shoes.

Pro Tip : If you only have one day in Strasbourg, consider doing a small group bike tour to get around faster and learn about the city as you discover it. Then spend the rest of your day revisiting your favorite spots you bookmarked or heading into neighborhoods you didn’t cover!

Tram or bus

Trams and buses in Strasbourg use the same tickets and are run by the same company, CTS.

The public transportation system covers not only the city center but also the outskirts of Strasbourg.

A single trip ticket costs €2, but the most convenient option for a Strasbourg day trip is to get the day pass for €4.60 per person.

Buy tickets on the tram or bus, from a kiosk at a stop, or at a CTS office. You can find more information about tickets and the bus and trams system here.

Uber or taxi

I used an Uber from the Orangerie Park back to the city center because it was freezing and we could not handle walking outside anymore!

It is certainly not the cheapest way to get around Strasbourg. I suggest using an Uber or taxi strategically, like walking to a further location and ubering back to the city center so that you save some money.

Travel Tips for Visiting Strasbourg

• Nearly all stores are closed on Sunday. This is just a travel tip for Strasbourg but for all of France. The only shops we found open on a Sunday in Strasbourg were souvenir stores! Every other store was closed, so keep this in mind in case you have an emergency item you need to get.
• If you plan on driving in or around Strasbourg , you have to have a special air quality certificate. Find more information on the official website .

Final Thoughts

If you are looking to go beyond Paris and beyond its internationalization to see a bit more of an authentic side to French cities, then Strasbourg is an interesting and worthwhile choice.

While you can see a lot with a full day in Strasbourg, being in the Alsace region merits at lest 1-2 days more to fully enjoy the surroundings, whether its wine country, the famous castle, Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, or the medieval, timber-housed towns of the countryside.

Freiburg is a beautiful city that's located just a short drive from Strasbourg. This city is renowned for its picturesque setting, and it's the perfect place to spend a day exploring the sights and sounds.

There's plenty to do in Freiburg, and you can easily spend a day or two exploring it all. If you're interested in history and culture, be sure to visit the Old Town and Cathedral. For something a little different, take a ride on the Freiburg Cable Car or enjoy a cruise on the river.

There is a regular train service from Strasbourg to Freiburg. The journey takes around an hour, making this one of the best Strasbourg day trips to take if you're short on time.

From Strasbourg to Nancy

Nancy is another beautiful city that's located just a short drive from Strasbourg. This city is popular for its art and architecture.

If you're interested in art and architecture, be sure to visit Place Stanislas and the Palace of the Dukes of Lorraine. You can also take a ride on the Nancy Funicular railway or enjoy a cruise on the river.

If you’re a fan of beautiful architecture, walkable cities, and delicious food and wine, then spending even one day in Strasbourg is a dream come true.

It did not take much for the capital of the Alsace region in northeast France to charm us completely , and after our first visit, we were eager to plan another.

P art French and part German, with a dazzle of its own magic, Alsace is a region like no other, and Strasbourg is quick to show that off.

Visit the Strasbourg Cathedral.

Also called Notre-Dame (not to be confused with the one in Paris), the opulent Strasbourg Cathedral is located in a central square, not far from the canals and right near the Strasbourg Tourism office.

There are a few things you need to be sure to do here!

First, c heck out to beautiful interior and visit the impressive astronomical clock that is on the right-hand side of the cathedral’s interior.

If you’d like to see the astronomical clock in action, come for  the midday show .

After that, don’t miss the chance to c limb the tower–the view of Strasbourg from the top is incredible!

While you’re nearby, be sure to spend some time wandering around the Strasbourg Cathedral Square–it is incredibly picturesque .

Take a scenic boat tour.

With only one day in Strasbourg, there’s no time to waste!

If you’re looking for the picturesque views of Strasbourg that you see you see on Instagram, Pinterest, and tourism adverts, head directly to La Petite France.

La Petite France is Strasbourg’s most picturesque neighborhood, home to colorful half-timbered houses that are perched right on the edge of the canals and plenty of pedestrian bridges so you can search for that perfect view.

Meandering through here is absolutely one of the best things to do in Strasbourg–even if you’re only visiting Strasbourg on a day trip, you’ll want to prioritize this area!

Taste some Alsatian wines.

Alsace is known for its wines, and they are delicious.

With only one day in Strasbourg, you won’t have time to visit the Alsace Wine Route outside of town, but luckily, plenty of vineyards offer tastings at storefronts set up in the city as well.

Prices range dramatically depending on how big of a tasting it is and what is included, so if you’re a wine buff, do some research before you arrive.

Check out the Alsatian Museum or the Historical Museum of Strasbourg.

As the capital of the Alsace region, Strasbourg has plenty of museums to choose from–but one day in Strasbourg isn’t enough time to justify spending much of it inside.

I recommend picking just one museum, though Strasbourg has more than one excellent option to choose from!

T he Alsatian Museum covering life in the region in the 18th and 19th centuries (it was founded in 1902 as pushback against the Germanization of Alsace, which was then under German rule), and the Historical Museum of Strasbourg (which covers the history of the city from the 13th century to 1800) are both highly recommended.

Grab dinner in a winstub.

Winstubs are traditional Alsatian restaurants, and like Alsace itself, they feel like a cross between German and French cultures, with a little something extra thrown in.

Think of a laid-back German pub–low ceilings, exposed timber beams, low lighting, beer, comfort food like sausages and pretzels–paired with a French country kitchen.

That’s pretty much a winstub: they’re cozy, they’re relaxed, and they tend to serve incredible food.

There’s no better place to eat dinner during your one day in Strasbourg than a winstub!

L ike in any city, the touristy areas are going to see higher prices and a need to do some research in advance to make a safe bet on quality–but for your one day in Strasbourg, I’d recommend eating at a well-reviewed winstub in La Petite France, where the environment is excellent and the views are lovely.

City Résidence Strasbourg Centre  — I’ll be perfectly honest: Strasbourg, especially during peak season, is far from the most budget-friendly destination.

However, City Résidence Strasbourg Centre offers a (somewhat) budget-friendly choice with solid reviews and an easily accessible location within walking distance of La Petite France, the Strasbourg Cathedral, and plenty of Christmas markets during December.

Strasbourg is quite compact , making it fairly easy to get around.

If you stay near La Petite France or the Strasbourg Cathedral Square, you likely won’t need any transportation at all while in Strasbourg .

W e stayed in town for nearly a week on our first visit using only our own two feet to get around!

The exception to this was coming into Strasbourg from the train station when we took one of the many easy-to-use trams

Strasbourg’s bus and tram system makes it easy to get around the areas that are a bit further out if needed.

When to Visit Strasbourg , France

There is no bad time to visit Strasbourg (or the rest of Alsace), but there are two wildly different seasons that are the most popular for a reason.

First, you can consider a visit to Strasbourg in the spring or summer.

Strasbourg in full bloom looks absolutely magnificent, with flowers planted all throughout the parks, along canals, and on the edges of the pedestrian bridges that crisscross the city.

Sadly, we were just a few weeks too early to see the flowers bloom on our first trip in late March and early April.

Second, a Christmas trip to Strasbourg is spectacular , and we loved using it as a base for exploring the Christmas markets in the region.

Strasbourg (and Alsace in general) is known for its beautiful Christmas markets, and since the entire city looks like something that belongs in a snow globe, it’s no surprise that their Christmas markets are something special.

If you’re considering a winter trip, keep in mind that the Christmas season is peak travel season in Strasbourg: as the self-declared Capital of Christmas, the city does fill up–you’ll want to book your trip well in advance if you hope to enjoy the markets.

Dinner in a winstub sounds fun guys! Mainly because of that comfy cozy environment. Right up my alley. This is one reason why I want to visit Germany soon too. The eateries seem to cozy and intimate to me, which I love. Food seems darn filling too LOL….my mom is from the Black Forest and whipped up brilliant German fare for us as kids, so I know Austrian cuisine is likely similarly tasty and satiating. Strasbourg is one of the cutest towns I’ve visited in Europe and this is a great roundup of how to spend a day there, I’ll have to do some of the things I missed the first time around when I go back. I also strongly recommend visiting the historic wine cellar at the hospital, which was the highlight of my time in Strasbourg. There is a section of really old barrels you can explore and while I wasn’t able to taste any wines, the few bottles I bought blind were delicious!

That’s exactly it! The nearby town of Colmar that we also visited while in Alsace is one of a few towns rumored to be the inspiration for Belle’s town in Beauty & The Beast, so you’re spot on!

Didn’t realise that the Strasbourg is half German and the other half French. On arrival from Frankjfurt we were amazed at the beauty and many interes6ts of Strasbourg , however on returning by train from Gare du Strasbourg we were asked on the train by the ticket officer to pay 59 Euros to get back to Frankfurt as we had boughjt a rfeturn ticket Frankfurt to Strasbourg in Germany but had not realised we were in the French side of Strasbourg Petite. The Perfect Colmar Day Trip from Strasbourg (by a Local)

I moved to Strasbourg in 2019 and since then I’ve gone on more day trips than I can count.

Of the places I’ve traveled to Colmar was one of my favorites so much so that I’ve been more than once.

Located 30 minutes south of Strasbourg by train, Colmar is the perfect destination for anyone who loves charming small towns.

Here you’ll find cobbled streets, winding canals, and some of the most colorful half-timbered houses in the region.

In this post, I’ll share with you the perfect Colmar day trip from Strasbourg itinerary. It has everything you need to guarantee an amazing visit.

Colmar Day Trip from Strasbourg Overview

If you’re short on time, here is an overview of my helpful guide.

Getting to Colmar from Strasbourg

The first step in planning your day trip to Colmar is figuring out how to get there. Luckily, these two cities are well connected and it’s very easy to get from one to the other .

There are quite a few options but for this day trip guide, I’ll be focusing on the two most convenient ones: by train and by car.

Helpful Tip : I’ve traveled to Colmar by both methods, and I prefer taking the train. It’s faster and even more convenient than driving.

The train is the most popular mode of transportation between Strasbourg and Colmar. It takes about 30 minutes and there are tons of departures throughout the day.

Tickets range from €20 to €30 roundtrip and leave from Strasbourg’s main train station.

If you prefer to have more flexibility and the freedom to explore at your own pace, renting a car is the next best option.

The drive takes about 45 minutes (depending on traffic) and follows the A35 highway the entire way. Then, once you’re in Colmar, you’ll find plenty of parking options.

11 Things to Do in Colmar in One Day

Once you arrive in Colmar, you’ll find there are tons of cool things to do.

Here are my top recommendations for a perfect day trip from Strasbourg:

Helpful Tip : The activities below are listed in order of how you should visit, so you can make the most out of your time.

1. Walk around Little Venice

Start your day in Colmar by walking around the picturesque area known as Little Venice. The name comes from the charming canals and half-timbered houses that line the streets.

It’s one of my favorite neighborhoods to go for a stroll . I love getting lost in the side streets and stopping by the cute shops.

Some of the most beautiful spots are Pont Rue Turenne and Pont Saint Pierre. Both look out over the Lauch River and offer stunning views.

2. Take a Photo of Quai de la Poissonnerie

You can’t come to Colmar without visiting Quai de la Poissonnerie. It’s in Little Venice but it’s so spectacular I had to give it its own section.

Here you’ll find the most colorful half-timbered houses in town.

And the best place to take a photo for your feed is from Pont Rue des Écoles.

It’s a popular spot so if you want a picture without the crowds I recommend getting there as early as possible.

Afterward, stop by Maison Alsacienne de Biscuiterie. They sell some of the best traditional treats in town.

3. Go for a Boat Ride on the Lauch River

One of the best things I’ve done in Colmar is take a boat ride through the canals.

Of course, I loved walking around, but I learned so much about the local culture on my boat tour that I wouldn’t have known otherwise.

Plus, it’s a great way to sit back and relax while taking in the beautiful scenery.

There are a few different companies that offer tours, but I recommend Sweet Narcisse . That’s the one I booked with. They don’t overpack their boats and their guides are, actually, from Alsace.

4. Admire the Fontaine Schwendi

After you’ve toured Little Venice, you’ll make your way towards the Old Town, stopping by the infamous Fontaine Schwendi.

The central statue is the work of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. He dedicated it to Lazarus von Schwendi, a key figure in the Imperial Army and a significant contributor to the Alsatian wine culture.

But that’s not the only reason it’s famous.

This is also where Belle, from Beauty and the Beast, sits down to read her book in one of the early scenes of the movie.

It’s a fun fact that makes this already beautiful fountain even more special.

5. Tour the Bartholdi Museum

Speaking of Frédéric Bartholdi, you can’t miss the opportunity to visit his museum.

The French sculptor and designer was born in Colmar and is best known for creating the Statue of Liberty.

The museum is set in his former childhood home. And, inside, you’ll find models of his most famous works, as well as personal artifacts and belongings.

I love touring museums like this. I learned so much about his life and walking through his home helped me imagine what it was like for him growing up.

6. Try Alsatian Cuisine

No trip to Colmar would be complete without trying some of the regional food.

Some of my favorite dishes are:

• Tarte Flambée – a traditional thin-crust pizza-like dish topped with cream, onions, and lardons.
• Choucroute Garnie – a hearty dish of sauerkraut and various slices of pork.
• Baeckeoffe – a meat and vegetable casserole.

And there’s no shortage of amazing restaurants in Colmar.

For the best tarte flambée, head to La Terrasse du Marche.

Every time I’ve gone, it has been packed. So, I recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before noon or making a reservation .

Then, there’s Brasserie des Tanneurs. It’s one of the best traditional Alsatian restaurants in town. And, if the tarte flambée at La Terrasse du Marche wasn’t so delicious, I would recommend it for that as well.

7. Stroll through the Old Town

After Little Venice, Colmar’s Old Town is my next favorite neighborhood.

It’s full of shops, cafés, colorful half-timbered houses, quirky buildings, and historical landmarks.

Grand Rue is the main street, and this is where you’ll find the infamous Maison dite “au Pèlerin.” It’s one of the most photographed spots in town.

Then, there’s Rue des Marchands. It’s the oldest and most known street in Colmar.

Here you’ll find plenty of shops selling local products and souvenirs.

But its biggest attraction is the Pfister House , a gorgeous Renaissance building. It’s known for its intricately carved balconies and detailed frescoes.

Then, if you’re looking to take a break, stop by Place de l’Ancienne Douane. It’s a charming square with tons of outdoor cafés. I always stop at the Deer and Beer, but you can’t go wrong with any of them.

8. Visit Saint Martin’s Church

Saint Martin’s Church is one of the most iconic landmarks in town.

And since you’re already in the Old Town, I recommend heading down Rue de l’Église. From here you’ll have a magnificent view of this Gothic-style church.

It dates to the 13th century and its stained-glass windows are spectacular. Of course, it doesn’t compare to the Strasbourg Cathedral , but it’s definitely worth a visit.

9. Make Chocolate at Choco-Story Colmar

If you’re a chocolate lover like me, then you have to make a stop at Choco-Story Colmar.

This museum is dedicated to all things chocolate and it’s the perfect place for anyone with a sweet tooth. I loved learning about its history and how it’s made. There were samples galore and I helped myself to quite a few.

But the real treat here is their workshop where you can learn how to make your own chocolates from scratch. Trust me, they taste even better when you make them yourself.

10. Explore the Unterlinden Museum

If there’s one museum you have to visit in Colmar, it’s the Unterlinden Museum.

This museum is known for housing a vast collection of artworks from the Middle Ages up to modern times.

It’s also home to many famous pieces such as Martin Schongauer’s The Madonna in the Rose Bower and Matthias Grünewald’s Isenheim Altarpiece.

Compared to the other museums I’ve been to in Alsace , this one ranks in my top five.

Even if you’re not an art enthusiast, the architecture of the building alone is worth a visit. The former monastery has been beautifully renovated, and its open courtyard is a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city.

11. Visit a Nearby Town: Eguisheim

If you have some extra time during your day trip, consider stopping by Eguisheim.

This charming medieval village is often referred to as one of the most beautiful villages in France. And it’s not hard to see why. The half-timbered houses are the prettiest I’ve seen in the region.

Take a stroll through its picturesque streets, stop by Saint Léon Square, and visit Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral. All the main sites are easy to see in under two hours.

Helpful Tip : Eguisheim is 6.8 kilometers (4.2 miles) from Colmar. It’s a 15-minute drive and you’ll find plenty of taxis at Colmar’s train station.

A day trip to Colmar offers a perfect blend of history, art, culture, and food. From cruising down the Lauch River to indulging in the region’s tastiest dishes, this itinerary has it all.

So, if you’re visiting Strasbourg for a few days, take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life and head down to Colmar. It’s something I do at least once a month!

You can actually get to Strasbourg from Paris in less than two hours . But to make the most of your time, I suggest you set off early so you can be there by mid-morning.

How to get to Strasbourg from Paris in one day

There are three ways to get to Strasbourg directly from Paris, and they are car, train and bus, but for this article I’m only looking at going by train, which might include a quick trip on the Paris Metro as well.

Why? Because it is by far the quickest way of getting you there. And as this is a day trip, we want the fastest route possible.

If you go by car it will take you a minimum of five hours and by bus a minimum of seven.

And as there are no direct flights from Paris to Strasbourg, so that leaves the train.

And the good news is a train can take less than two hours to get you into the historic city of Strasbourg.

The best station to use in Paris for this trip is Paris’ Gare de l’Est train station.

There are two types of trains which run this route and they are TGV and OUIGO.

Taking a TGV Train from Paris to Strasbourg

If you want the quickest journey, then the high-speed TGV train is the best option . It’s not the cheapest, but it’s the fastest. Plus, it will get you there in under two hours.

So if you leave Paris by 7.30 am you’ll be in Strasbourg at 9.30 am with the whole day ahead of you to explore the city.

However, if you don’t want to pay more than you have to for your ticket, I suggest you book ahead to get the best possible price.

Taking a OUIGO Train from Paris to Strasbourg

OUIGO is the slower but cheaper option. It’s run by SNCF, the same company that offers the high-speed TGV. However, they may be cheaper, but they aren’t as comfy and take almost twice the amount of time.

If you’re short on time this would not be my recommended option as they are often delayed and not as regular.

However, if the price of the TGV is way too much, then this might be the best way to go.

As time is tight, the best way to see Strasbourg in one day is to do a tour. That way you won’t miss a thing, and you’ll make the most of the time you have.

Three Things you MUST do on a day trip to Strasbourg

This might be a whirlwind tour of Strasbourg, but there are some things you really shouldn’t miss. Most French cities have their regional produce, and Strasbourg is no different.

There are many great dishes you should try, but my favourite has to be the three listed below.

No 1 – Drink some Alsatian Wine

Strasbourg is in the Alsace wine region, so it stands to reason that there is likely to be some good wine to try. My recommendation would be to go to the Wolfberger Boutique , as they have some of the best Alsace wines.

And they offer free wine tastings daily, I mean, what’s not to love? Plus, they’ve been doing this since 1902, so they know a thing or two about wine, so you’ll be in good hands.

If you like what you taste, you can buy a bottle from the shop to take home with you as a reminder of your trip.

No 2 – Try a Tarte Flambée

This is traditional Strasbourg food, but don’t let the name mislead you. This is not a dessert, it’s an Alsatian-style pizza and, it’s delicious.

Also known as flammekueche, the main ingredients are cream, onions and bacon.

You’ll then find other things added, such as mushrooms and grated cheese, and it’s usually a shared dish rather than for just one person.

No 3 – Indulge in a Beer & Bretzel Combo

These two things go together like peanut butter and jelly, or if you’re British, let’s go with eggs and bacon. 

The Bretzel is the Strasbourg version of a pretzel, baked and twisted into the traditional knot.

Often topped with cheese or other savoury-style items, they are beyond tasty. You’ll find them in most bakeries, and my favourite was L’Atelier 116 bakery . 

These little beauties are also at many of the Christmas markets in France , and they are seriously yummy.

And once you’ve got your Bretzel, head to Les BerThoM , possibly one of the best bars in Strasbourg and only a stone’s throw from the cathedral.

Where to eat and drink in Strasbourg

Let me say this right now, the food in Strasbourg is not like the traditional cuisine you think of when people talk about French food.

One of the reasons why I recommend spending more than 24 hours in Strasbourg is to enjoy the variety of food on offer.

If you love sausages as much as I do, Alsatian food will appeal as there are a lot of German-style sausages on offer.

But don’t worry, there are also plenty of fabulous French options too, including cheese and pastries.

Chez Yvonne

Chez Yvonne is THE place to be if you’re looking for somewhere traditional to have lunch in Strasbourg. 

It first opened its doors in 1873 under the ownership of Eugène Jacquemet, who had it until 1920, under the name of Winstub S’Burjerstuewel.

At this time, the French drank in Winstubs and drank wine, hence the name. 

In 1956, it was taken over by Yvonne Haller and became known as ‘Chez Yvonne’.

It’s a fabulous little place with classic Alsatian decor, including gingham curtains and tablecloths. And with queues going out the door, you’ll need to book in advance to be guaranteed a seat.

Being vegan in France is no laughing matter, and although things have improved, there are still limited options available.

Although I’m not vegan myself, my next-door neighbour, Simon, is vegan, and he always tells me about the best vegan restaurants he finds on his travels.

What you should know about the historic city of Strasbourg

Strasburg is a city with an interesting past. Sat on the French-German border, it has had a bit of an identity struggle, switching between being ruled by France and being ruled by Germany.

So, of course, you see influences from both countries not just within the history but through the architecture, decor, food, drink and culture.

For 400 years, Strasbourg was a  “free imperial city”, and it wasn’t until 1681 that it fell under French rule when Louis XIV of France, The Sun King, conquered the city, officially claiming it as part of France.

But then came the Franco-Prussian War, which saw it switch to German rule.

Then in World War I it returned to French rule. During World War II, it was under German occupation until the end of the war, when it was reclaimed, once again and, for the final time, by France.

Aside from the power struggle of who ruled Strasbourg, some other pretty impressive things happened there.

In 1605, it became the birthplace of the very first newspaper, not a bad claim to fame, and in 1792, Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle composed the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, whilst in Strasbourg. 

In 1949, the city was chosen as the headquarters for the Council of Europe, making it an important centre for European diplomacy.

The European quarter in Strasbourg, where many European institutions are located, is primarily centred around the area known as the “Orangerie” and the “Wacken” district.

This part of the city houses the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, and the European Court of Human Rights, among other European institutions.

I’m biased because I love Christmas , so for me, December is the best time to visit Strasbourg. The Christmas markets are wonderful and showcase this historic city at its best. But Spring is another great time to go as the weather is warmer and the crowds haven’t yet descended for the summer.

Is one day enough in Strasbourg?

No, one day is not enough time in Strasbourg. There is just too much to see and do, not just in Strasbourg, but also in the surrounding areas.  I would suggest 3-5 days to allow you time to do everything, more if you want to do some wine-tasting tours in the Alsace region .

How much does it cost to travel from Paris to Strasbourg?

It all depends on how organized you are. If you are going by train and book 30 days in advance , travelling from Paris to Strasbourg can be as little as €25. However, if you leave it, prices can go up to around €75.

Can you do a day trip to Strasbourg from Paris?

Yes, you can absolutely do a day trip to Strasbourg from Paris. If you catch an early train from Paris , you can be in Strasbourg in under two hours, giving you the whole day to explore the city.

Yes, the best station to use to travel from Paris to Strasbourg is Paris’ Gare de l’Est. This will take you directly into Gare de Strasbourg-Ville, the main station in Strasbourg and the train is direct if you use SNCF.

Final thoughts: Spending a day in Strasbourg

Doing a day trip to Strasbourg from Paris is totally doable and you’ll be going from one romantic city to another . The biggest piece of advice I can give you is to leave early and take a TGV Train as it gets you there the fastest way possible.

My other big tip is to take one of the tours of the city, either by taking a bike tour OR doing one of the walking tours , as this will give you more bang for your buck in the shortest time. And you’ll get to see much more of this fabulous city.

At the end of the day, Strasbourg is a beautiful historic city and well worth taking a day out of Paris to make the trip.

The fastest and most convenient way to get to Strasbourg from Paris is by train.

Head to Paris Gare de l’Est station and take a high-speed TGV train, which depart regularly. You will arrive in Strasbourg’s main station in just 2 hours. You should book your train tickets in advance to ensure availability.

Some people might prefer to drive, since there are some nice villages along the way, like Reims and Epernay . However, this doesn’t make much sense if you are just going on a day trip to Strasbourg, since the journey from Paris takes 5 and half hours. If you go to Strasbourg for two days or more, then driving could be a good idea.

Morning: Explore the Historic Center of Strasbourg

Once you arrive in Strasbourg, head to the city center to explore the picturesque streets of the city, enjoy the surrounding canals and visit some of the most important landmarks.

You won’t miss the Cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic architecture. It is actually considered one of the most beautiful cathedrals in France. While it is free to enter the cathedral, but there is a fee to climb the tower for panoramic views of the city.

Located to the left of the cathedral, you will see Maison Kammerzell . This house is often considered as the most beautiful house in Strasbourg. The building is famous for its intricate carvings which you can see on the facade .

If you want to go shopping, the most charming street in Strasbourg is Rue des Orfevres (Goldschmidtgass). You can find it just beyond Maison Kammerzell, leading away from the cathedral.

To make the most of your time in the historic center and to learn more about the places you see, consider taking a guided tour.

Noon: Explore Petite France by Boat

After walking around the city center, you should explore La Petite France. This is a beautiful old neighborhood in the heart of Strasbourg.

La Petite France is famous for it’s half-timbered houses, a style of construction popular during the Middle Ages, in which you can see the wooden beams of the houses from the exterior.

The neighborhood is a little island, since it’s surrounded by canals. So it’s full of picturesque bridges as well.

The whole area is a great place to walk around, but one of the best ways to see Petite France is by taking a boat tour along the canals. It can give you a beautiful and unique perspective of the area.

If you feel like exploring the canals in a private setting, or if you are going on a group, consider booking a private boat tour around La Petite France . They have great reviews (and it’s a pretty good deal).

Another option is to take a group boat tour. Look for Batorama, which is the company offering them. If you are going in the high season, make sure to book in advance. Otherwise, you can expect to make a very long line to purchase tickets.

Lunch: Les Chefs d’Oevre d’Alsace

Strasbourg is renowned for its cuisine, which reflects the German influence on the city. This includes delicious dishes such as tarte flambée, choucroute, and baeckeoffe.

If you’re looking to try a local specialty for lunch, head over to the highly-rated Les Chefs d’Oeuvre d’Alsace, a restaurant located in the heart of Petite France.

One dish you won’t want to miss is the tarte flambée. This is a delicious Alsatian pizza made with a thin crust and topped with cheese, onions, bacon (although here you can also find a vegetarian version available, great option if you are a vegetarian like I am!).

Besides it serving very good quality regional dishes, they also offer great value for money. Two people can eat for between 20-30 euros.

Afternoon: Walk around the Petite France

You already visited the Petite France by boat, but after lunch it wil be time to wander around it’s streets by foot.

Walk along its narrow cobblestone streets, where you’ll find many shops in the area selling local crafts, including pottery, glassware, and textiles.

Be sure to try a traditional Alsatian pastry, such as a kougelhopf or a Bredele cookie.

Afternoon: shop for some regional specialties

I recommend going shopping for some specialties you won’t easily find in Paris. Or at least not for the same prices!

An interesting specialties shop in the Petite France area is Le Comptoir de Mathilde .

This shop is famous for its delicious chocolates, but there are some other great tasty things for sale: chocolate spreads, flavored liqueurs, different salts, spices, sweets, etc.

Next, head back to the city center around the area of the Cathedral. Make sure to visit Mon Oncle Malker de Munster , which is very near the Musée Alsacien.

Inside, you’ll find a wide variety of locally made products, including wines, cheeses, jams, and chocolates; all of great quality.

One of the highlights of the shop is its selection of Munster cheese, a soft and creamy cheese that is a staple of the Alsace region.

Afternoon: Visiting Strasbourg’s Musée Alsacien

To understand more about the history and the culture of the region you are visiting, head to this interesting museum.

Inside, you’ll find an interesting collection of objects and artifacts which will give you an insight into the daily life of the Alsace people over the centuries.

One highlight of the museum is its reconstruction of an Alsatian village. It is complete with a bakery, a cooper’s workshop, and a schoolhouse. You’ll also find exhibits showcasing the region’s traditional crafts, including pottery, weaving, and woodworking.

The entrance fee is €7.50 for adults, and it’s free for children. However, if you’re visiting Strasbourg on the first Sunday of the month, admission to the museum is free!

The museum closes on Tuesdays.

Quiet corners in Charente-Maritime

If you’re in the Charente-Maritime in the southwest ensure you spend a day south of Royan, where there’s a collection of quiet places to visit, all in close proximity. Start at the Régulus caves , a troglodyte site that has views of the Cordouan lighthouse and traditional fishing nets hanging from the cliffs. Then, walk south to the village of Talmont-Sur-Gironde and the imposing 12th-century Sainte-Radegonde church, which overlooks the estuary. The village is full of narrow, car-free streets and huge hollyhocks growing against the whitewashed walls. Deep into Dordogne history

A visit to the Gouffre de Padirac cave is a must if you are in the Dordogne (between the Loire Valley and the Pyrenees). It’s an incredible place that can be explored by steps, or by getting a lift 103 metres down. Once there you’re taken on a magical boat ride on a river in the cave. The water is turquoise and the rock surrounding you is forever changing colour. You almost feel like you’ve entered a different world. I’d recommend visiting out of season when it’s quieter. Glorious gardens in Nantes

Looking for a grand hotel within reach of the airport at Nantes for our last night on holiday, we found Château Colbert in Maulévrier. It’s a mansion with a wonderful restaurant but, even better, has a restored vegetable garden that supplies the hotel, and of which tours are available . Next door is the Parc Oriental de Maulévrier , a Japanese strolling garden created around the same time as Monet’s garden at Giverny, when Japonisme was a strong cultural influence. Vineyard cycling in Alsace

A cycling trip through France in September saw us visit the Vosges mountains and Alsace in the east, and were surprised by how much of a hidden gem it was. We stayed at the reasonably priced Auberge Ramstein (doubles from €87 room- only) in Scherwiller, and found plenty of vineyards to visit on foot, including the biodynamic vines at Achillée and the traditional-method vineyard at Domaine Dussourt. Unlike Strasbourg, the village and nearby town of Sélestat were lovely and quiet, there were great cycle routes on the flats and hills, and lots of hiking options, too. Maddy Warner

A champagne experience in De Gaulle country

I ended up in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises in northeastern France by accident. We needed dog-friendly accommodation en route south. It was a crisp winter evening and a large moon shone over a delightful main square framed by two churches, with inviting restaurants serving traditional food and champagne from the nearby hills. The words “ France profonde ” came to my mind. In daylight, we discovered we were in the village where President Charles de Gaulle spent every other weekend and retreated when he left politics. His residence, La Boisserie , is open to the public, and his simple tomb in the small churchyard looks over the fields and hills. There are champagne houses in the village and plenty of small producers in the surrounding areas. We followed the sign for Clairvaux and discovered the remains of one of Europe’s most important medieval abbeys. The hills are gentle and there’s no traffic, so you can bring your bicycle and explore. Lara

Forest bathing in Fontainebleau

The first thing that hits you when you arrive at the forest of Fontainebleau is the amazing smell: the fresh pine scent feels like it’s cleansing body and soul. The forest is an ancient hunting ground, now used for walking, cycling and climbing. For a cultural hit, visit the Château de Fontainebleau , which will take your breath away. For somewhere quieter to stay, the small, pretty town of Bois-le-Roi is inside the forest and by the banks of the Seine. It’s also on a direct train line from Paris, so cars are not required, and it takes less than an hour – making it ideal for a day trip. Suzanne

Art and architecture in Honfleur, Normandy

In northern France, on the southern bank of the Seine estuary, is the attractive town of Honfleur. Its highlights include the old port and Sainte-Catherine church, which is the largest wooden church in France. As you stroll through a town that has been associated with many notable artists, including Monet and Boudin, be sure to admire the houses with their slate-covered fronts and the array of beguiling shops and galleries. As the sun sets, enjoy a glass of calvados at the harbourside, while watching the fishing boats at the shore of the Seine. Alison

Winning tip: A museum to treasure near Lille

Musée La Piscine in Roubaix, a converted swimming pool just outside Lille, is a treasure trove of paintings, sculptures and installations. The building, from the art deco period, is a large part of its charm and is a reminder to me of when public buildings were practical and beautiful. The €9 admission price is an absolute bargain. We spent three hours there and still didn’t see everything. The restaurant/tea room is excellent, too. David Pearce
