  • This tour visits Germany (plus Austria on the tour extension). In order to enter these countries, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code GMC.
  • You will walk for about 1 hour daily across mostly flat terrain, including paved roads and cobblestone streets, with few hills.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
  • You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times.
  • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Berlin and depart from Munich (or Vienna for the tour extension). A representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative might be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the bus at the time of your arrival.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead Tours for an additional cost.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • Airlines have varying weight restrictions on baggage. Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage; be advised that you are responsible for any such costs.
  • Contact your airline for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which may include train connections or flights.
  • One carry-on bag of 45 total inches (length + width + height) is also permitted.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Winters in Germany are generally cold. To ensure you’re comfortable for outdoor sightseeing and Christmas market visits, we recommend packing a coat, hat, and gloves, as well as rainwear.
  • We also suggest packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes, sneakers, or winter boots is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • German food is hearty and substantial. Among the specialties are dumpling stews, sauerkraut, sausages, smoked cheeses, and dark breads. Bavaria produces some of the world’s purest beers, and white German wines are exceptionally good.
  • On the tour extension, Austria is known for its savory Wiener schnitzel and excellent wild trout, carp, and crayfish. Save room for dessert—especially the strudels of fruit and nuts and elegant chocolate cakes, such as the world-famous Sachertorte.
  • Germany (plus Austria on the tour extension) operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Germany (and Austria on the tour extension) is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • You will use the euro in Germany (and in Austria on the tour extension).
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on your tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information. International travel is, by its very nature, unpredictable. We must therefore reserve the right to change this itinerary, without advance notice, to meet with local conditions at the time of travel. We appreciate your understanding. What is Contiki?

Contiki are the world leaders in organized youth travel. We’ve been providing amazing travel experiences for young travellers, from 18-35 years old, since 1962. Imagine how good you would be at something if you had been doing it for more than 60 years?

Everything about Contiki is deeply rooted in our two values ‘Make Every Moment Count’ and ‘We’re About People’. We don’t just talk, we walk the walk and live by our brand philosophy of ‘ Travel.Together. ’ which means to travel with one another, with the destinations we visit, the people and cultures we enjoy and the environment.

You’ve never experienced travel like this.

Why only 18-35?

Focusing on 18-35 year olds allows us to tailor a dramatically more powerful travel experience and an itinerary so fun it feels like all of your best Friday nights combined.

Tailoring to select ages brings together like minded, likeable people, and allows us to use Social Travel planning to build great groups of people so fast you’ll wonder if you’ve been friends forever.

What destinations can I go to with Contiki?

A sunrise, shoreline or bright light for every whim. We are proud to offer more than 350 Global trips, intelligently designed for a seamless and simple social travel experience. Visit our search page to discover your perfect travel destination.

We’re reinventing hassle free travel. Whether you are a solo traveller or group you can be rest assured that there has been tonnes of planning behind every trip.

Booking with Contiki means you are saying yes to a smile inducing trip where the typically stressful elements just seem to magically happen.

No one does trips like Contiki, essential accommodation, transport, reservations and so much more is all taken care of. You can multiply the magic with trip add ons and numerous customisations for your free time.

Every single Contiki social travel trip is managed by one of our expert Trip Managers, who are there to provide hands-on support and ensure your trip runs smoothly whilst you stay in the moment.

From 2022 your good time will be good for the planet as all Contiki trips are carbon natural. Find out more here.

How many other travellers are on each trip?

Group sizes are completely dependent on where and how you choose to travel with Contiki.

In Europe and in most of North America and New Zealand, group sizes can range between 24 – 53 awesome travellers.

In regions like Asia, Australia, Africa and Latin America, and on some North America and New Zealand trips, our group sizes are considerably smaller – as low as 12 or up to 30 travellers max.

Detour trips offer a different type of experience and max out at 16 people led by a local host.

Wondering what is so great about travelling together? Check out the Contiki Social travel page.

Each group is administered according to our strict Covid policies which can be viewed here.

What’s included?

All essential trip elements have been catered to ensure a great time, with great people in great places. But you mean more specifically right?

Your accommodation, essential trip transport, and a good handful of meals are included in the cost of your Contiki trip (on most trips we offer breakfast every day, plus a hand-picked selection of authentic and tasty meals).

To fill your days and Insta feeds we have Included Experiences, which are basically the sights and activities we think you just can’t afford to miss. Of course you also get our expert and highly trained team of Contiki staff to support throughout.

A day by day breakdown of inclusions and Free Time Add-Ons are available on the trip specific pages.

We always try to accommodate special requests such as birthdays, proposals etc. Please chat to our team and we can explore how we may support the request.

What’s not included?

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting.

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

What are Contiki's sustainability credentials?

Travel comes with responsibilities. That’s why we’re determined to travel sustainably and consciously, and that’s why we’re willing to take a stand on issues closest to our hearts. Find out more details here . With the help of our four-point Climate Action Plan, we're now on a journey to Net Zero - committing to carbon reductions and evolving to support the transition to a low-carbon future. WHY CHOOSE US?

Variety of christmas markets tours options, incredible destinations, years of travel experience, christmas markets group packages, christmas market travel options, christmas market tours 2024 & 2025 discount 50%.

Christmas Market tours and the world-famous Christmas Market River Cruises will once again become available in 2024 and 2025. Every year, eager travelers reserve space on Europe Christmas Market Tours to experience the yuletide season at its best. Now you can on any of our 2024 and 2025 Christmas Market Tours.

Europe Christmas Market Tours remain an incredibly affordable way to travel, mostly due to the off-peak nature of the season. Christmas Market Tours and Christmas Market River Cruises take you through popular Central European destinations like Austria, France, and Germany. Dating back to the 15th century, Christmas Markets in Europe have provided locals and visitors with festive scenes, including Christmas light shows, concerts, hot apple cider, mulled wine, and beautifully decorated trees that rival the giant spruce at Rockefeller Center! Central Europe hosts many traditional markets, with various ways to experience them, such as Christmas Market Tours and Christmas Market River Cruises.

The Difference Between Christmas Market Tours and Cruises

The main difference between a dedicated Christmas Market Tour and a Christmas Market River Cruise is that you only have to unpack once on a cruise. Historically, rivers were the highways of Europe, with major city centers situated right along the banks. For example, beautiful Prague has hugged the Vltava River for over ten centuries, with the river area now home to over 1 million residents. Multi-city bus tours that feature Prague also normally visit Vienna and Budapest. While the overland distance between these cities is around 200 miles, tours usually include stops in charming towns like Bratislava to break up the longer drives. River cruises allow you to wake up to new destinations each day while enjoying views of castles and sites along the passing river banks. Both tour and cruise options may also offer activities like biking along trails near the floating vessels.

What Makes Christmas Market Tours So Special?

  • During the four Sundays preceding Christmas (Advent), Christkindlmarkts fill the streets of many cities and villages bringing Christmas to life.
  • Getting to see and experience a Christmas Market in Europe by itself is most definitely a bucket list item.
  • Having the chance to purchase unusual holiday ornaments not easily found in the states is also a treat.
  • Experiencing warm Gluhwein while wandering through Central Europe Christmas Market during a cold winter's night is a highlight.
  • Iceskating in Rockefeller Center is a wonderful experience; however, iceskating in the middle of a five hundred year old Christmas Market is entirely something else.
  • Discovering hot chimney cakes, Spatzle, and Lebkuchen can transform your experience into something amazing!

But where should you begin when trying to figure out the best Christmas Markets in Europe?

The Best Christmas Markets In Europe

That's easy! The best Christmas Markets in Europe are all of the above, because they're all wonderful! It all depends on if you prefer taking a Christmas Market Tour or Christmas Market River Cruise.

Summers are generally mild to warm, with average temperatures ranging from 20° to 30°C (68° to 86°F). Winters can be cold, especially in the northern and eastern regions, with temperatures often dropping below freezing and occasional snowfall. On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits

Luggage : Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb

Carry-On Bag : *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”

  • *Please note : A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage.

So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.

Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
  • Layers: It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
  • Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
  • Rain Gear: Depending on the season and the countries you're visiting, it's a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.

Sun Protection:

  • Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
  • Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly .

Medications and First Aid:

  • Any prescription medications you need. (See more below under Health & Wellness)
  • Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.

Toiletries:

  • Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
  • Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
  • Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
  • A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).

Electronics:

  • A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone . However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
  • Mobile phone.
  • Chargers for each electronic you bring.
  • Travel adapter and/or voltage converter
  • Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.
  • Small travel hair dryer (make sure you have the correct converter and adapter).

Miscellaneous:

  • A travel-friendly daypack or bag to carry your essentials during excursions.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet , and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
  • A small travel alarm.
  • A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
  • A travel pillow.
  • Scarf or shawl for visiting religious sites or to cover up in conservative areas.
  • Light sleepwear.
  • A new, blank journal to document your trip. Don't know your travel journal style? Find out here !
  • Ziplock bags (storing snacks, toiletries, and keeping things organized).

Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.

Electricity

American appliances run on 110-120 volts at 60 Hz, while European appliances run on 220-230 volts at 50 Hz.

As a result, American appliances designed for use in the United States (typically 120 volts at 60 Hz) may not be directly compatible with the higher voltage used in European countries. Plugging a 120-volt appliance into a 220-240-volt outlet without the appropriate voltage converter or transformer can cause damage to the appliance or pose safety risks.

If you plan to bring American appliances to Europe, you will need a voltage converter or transformer to change the voltage to 220-240 volts from 110 volts. Additionally, you will likely need a plug adapter to fit the American-style plug into the European power outlets. All of Europe operates on the same two round-pronged outlets (Type C).

It's important to note that not all appliances are compatible with voltage converters, so it's essential to check the labels or user manuals of your devices before using them with a voltage converter. Some electronic devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and camera chargers, are dual voltage and can support 120V and 220-240V, so they may not require a voltage converter, but a plug adapter will still be necessary.

To avoid any issues with electrical compatibility during your travels, consider purchasing appliances specifically designed for the voltage used in the region you'll be visiting or use appropriate voltage converters and plug adapters to ensure the safe operation of your American appliances in Europe.

We recommend purchasing an adapter with a voltage converter so you can pack less. And to pick up any necessary adapters or converters for your electronic devices before departing on your guided tour and bringing them with you.

Hair Dryers in Your Hotel

Hair dryers are common accessories in hotels. Should you want to bring your own, though, you will need to bring an adapter and voltage converter or make sure it is dual voltage by checking the label for INPUT AC 120V - 240V or a switch that can be set to 125V or 250V. Many devices have this feature, so it's worth checking before you travel. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but can't find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is commonly available in European hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but it is worth noting that the settings will differ from what you are used to in the USA.

However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings. Most hotels in Europe can provide a portable fan for additional room cooling if requested. Your Travel Director will be on hand to assist you throughout your trip.

Traveling by coach

Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.

Airport transfers

Airport transfers to and from the airport on the first and last days of your tour are complimentary only if you are traveling on a tour operated by Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, or Luxury Gold and   your flight times coincide with the shuttle-coach transfer timings. Learn more about Airport Transfers here .

To enable you to personalize your tour experience, you will find a number of Optional Experiences designed to complement the itinerary. These are designed to offer a deeper insight into the culture and character of the areas to be visited and provide some wonderful highlights to your travels. The optional program is designed to let you experience more of what interests you and to get the most from your vacation without replacing or overlapping with anything included in an itinerary.

The majority of Optional Experiences will be offered to you by your Travel Director at the beginning of your trip. Some may be subject to change, depending on the time you are traveling or local circumstances, including weather and days of the week. Your Travel Director will provide further information.

Usually, most Optional Experiences will be priced in the local currency, but please read through the details of individual optional experiences for specific information. Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.

It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while abroad.

In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications .

Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.

It's essential to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to any destination. Routine vaccinations may include vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.

When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.

Local Specialists

It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity equivalent to $1.00-$2.00 USD per person per half day.

Your Coach Driver and Travel Director

The trip cost does not include gratuities for your Travel Director and Driver. At the end of your trip, you may express appreciation to your Travel Director and Driver for their excellent service and the personal attention you received. Gratuities are given at the discretion of each guest, and a suggested amount per person/per day is listed in your travel documents.

For your convenience and ease, there is an option to pre-pay gratuities for the Travel Director and Driver at the time of booking.

Hotel services

It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

Housed in a centuries-old castle in the charming Rhine Valley wine town of Rüdesheim, Siegfried's Mechanisches Musikkabinett really must be seen – and heard – to be believed. It's the legacy of the late Siegfried Wendel, who founded his first museum dedicated to antique self-playing musical instruments in the 1970s. The current Musikkabinett in the 14th-century Brömserhof display's Siegfried's mesmerizing collection of mechanized musical clocks, player pianos, fairground organs, self-playing violins and many more... including the world's largest automated doll orchestra!

After several land tours with Tauck, this was our first on one of their riverboats. Even with our very high expectations, this trip exceeded them by a wide margin!

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a  passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Germany, France and Switzerland. You are not required to obtain a visa for the short duration of this cruise.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries we visit on this cruise to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your cabin while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents or cards are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage ― General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much stricter in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage ― General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or large items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small and is designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece and to carry only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not allow for access during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Your riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and inform us at time of booking.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally , no other vaccinations are currently required for travel to Germany, France or Switzerland. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Info Center at 800-232-4636/800-CDC-INFO (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC Internet website by clicking  here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally ,  please contact an embassy or consulate of each of the countries we visit on this tour to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

While a cruise on the Rhine is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy all the cruise has to offer, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our visits to the Christmas markets, often along cobblestone streets, and at many sites there are multiple stairs or steps; for the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

Your riverboat has four decks: Diamond, Ruby, Emerald, and Sun. The elevator runs between the Diamond, Ruby and Emerald decks. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor on board. In case of emergency, we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate in December along the Rhine is seasonably cold. The average high and low temperatures are 42/33 °F (6/1 °C). The amount of precipitation is approximately 1.8 in (45.72 mm).

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa. gov, by clicking here .

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. A coat and sweater for the sun deck and touring is also recommended. Pack comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in, as many of the sites visited were built centuries ago and have uneven surfaces, some steep inclines and many steps. For the welcome and farewell dinners, you may wish to dress more formally – jacket and tie for men, casually elegant attire for ladies (not required).

Bathrobes, slippers and hairdryers are provided in each cabin on board the riverboat.

The riverboat provides limited valet laundry services but no dry cleaning. Valet laundry service is available on the riverboat for a fee. Ironing facilities are available by request to the front desk. Category 7 cabins feature their own irons and ironing boards.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription, or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

We recommend you pack the following items for your cruise on the Rhine:

  • Flat, rubber-soled walking shoes for onboard
  • Sturdy but comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in for onshore
  • Short and long-sleeved cotton shirts
  • Slacks and jeans
  • Medium-weight socks
  • Medium-weight sweater
  • Winter coat
  • Raincoat and rain hat
  • Lightweight gloves
  • Collapsible umbrella
  • Sun protection
  • Camera, lenses, batteries and plenty of film and/or memory cards
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Travel clock with alarm
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your cabin while traveling

Day 1 Frankfurt to Heidelberg

Arrive in Frankfurt and pick up your rental car at Frankfurt International Airport or in Frankfurt City Centre. Start your Central Germany Christmas Highlights Self-Drive Tour towards Heidelberg. Heidelberg is a beautiful historic town located along the banks of the Neckar River and the most significant sight is certainly the ruin of Heidelberg Castle , which is towering above the city. Since your hotel is located right inside of the Old Town of Heidelberg it is easy to explore historic Heidelberg by foot. Your tour package will include walking tour suggestions for the Old Town. Along the walking tour you will see the Old Bridge from where you have a nice view of the Old Town and the Castle ruins above. You will also pass by the “ Marktplatz ” (market place) which is the main square of Heidelberg, the “ Peterskirche ” (St. Peter´s Church) and the historic University of Heidelberg. Heidelberg´s University was founded 1386 and it is the oldest University in Germany and with more than 30.000 students it is still one of the most important universities in Germany today.

If you want to enjoy a view over Heidelberg and the Neckar River you may want to walk up to the grounds of the castle ruins or – for a small fee, take  the  historic funicular up and down Heidelberg Castle. The historic Christmas Market is held on seven squares around the Old Town, featuring those typical stalls displaying Christmas handicrafts, local specialties. At night enjoy the splendid view of the illuminated castle .

Day 2 Rothenburg ob der Tauber

In the morning drive from Heidelberg along the Castle Road to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of Germany`s most beautiful medival cities. Taking a walk thru this charming little town is truly a journey back in time. Rothenburg ob der Tauber was once a powerful free imperial town and its monuments, landmarks and buildings still bear witness to these days. Marvel at the half-timbered buildings and at town walls which have stood for hundreds of years, protecting the city since the Middle Ages. Visit the town’s most famous spot, the Ploenlein square , probably the most photographed place in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Also very interesting to see is the Spitalbastei Gate , created by Leonhard Weidmann, the Latin inscription on the gate reading: ” Peace to those who enter, health to those who leave”. The Gothic St. James Church is the town’s most prominent church, here you can take a minute and relax in quietness while you enjoy the beauty of the famous Altar of the Holy Blood and the Twelve Apostles Altar . Every step you take in this old town is a step thru history with yet another beautiful spot to be discovered around the corner.

Rothenburg also offers museums which are cultural highlights, such as the Doll and Toy Museum where the history of playthings is shown, as well as the Crime Museum , where the visitor gets an insight into the law and especially its execution during the last 700 years. A highlight will be the  English-speaking tour with the Night Watchman  which starts at 8pm (included). Before you join the tour you may want to visit the charming Christmas Market located right in front of the historic Town Hall (from where your tour starts).

Day 3 Nuremberg

Today you will drive from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Nuremberg. The city’s history reaches back to the year 1050, its name “nourenberc” translating into “rocky hill”. Nuremberg’s famous landmark, the Kaiserburg ( Imperial Castle ), towers above the Old Town, which is protected by the 5 kilometers long city wall with its many towers.

When exploring the beauty of Nuremberg’s medieval Old Town, you can start at the Koenigstor (“Kingsgate”), from where the timber framed buildings, the Gothic Church of St. Lawrence and the Church of St. Sebaldus can be easily reached by foot. Right next to the Koenigstor there is the Handwerkerhof (craft center), here you will feel like you are back in the medieval times, there are craft workshops like they used to have a long time ago as well as a gingerbread bakery.

The Christkindles Markt in Nuremberg is one of the most popular ones in Germany. It is located on Hauptmarkt square, one can enjoy the delicious Nuremberger Bratwurst (sausages) while marveling at the beautifully decorated stalls offering local and traditional handicrafts and specialties in a medieval atmosphere.

The historic flair of Nuremberg with the Old Town surrounded by historic City Walls and the impressive Imperial Castle (which has never been conquered) encouraged Adolf Hitler during the Third Reich to choose Nuremberg as the location for their Nazi Party Rally Grounds . Within the monumental Congress Hall a museum and documentation center opened in 2001. Its permanent exhibition “Faszination und Gewalt” (Fascination and Terror) is concerned with the causes, connections, and consequences of the Nazi movement in Germany. So if you are interested in WWII and German Third Reich history you may want to consider this visit . Information about the Rally Grounds can be found in our blog “ Documentation Center Nazi Rally Grounds ”.

Day 4 Dresden

After breakfast drive to Dresden. On your way to Dresden you may want to visit Bamberg – the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bamberg is a rarity even by German standards, as the basic fabric of the Old Town is largely in tact , and over one thousand (!) buildings are land marked. A highlight in Bamberg is the New Residence and Rose Garden . Construction of the New Residence began in 1613 and the palace has over 40 state rooms featuring stucco-work ceilings, furniture and tapestries from the 17th and 18th centuries. Another main attraction in Bamberg is the Imperial Cathedral which was built in the 13th century. Take a look at the magnificent marble tomb of the founder and his wife, a masterpiece of the German sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider . And do not miss to take a look at the  Bamberg Horseman.  This statue most likely dates to the period from 1225 to 1237.

At your convenience continue your drive on to Dresden. Dresden – the river Elbe and the gently rolling landscape between Saxon Switzerland and Meissen determine the nature in which the city is embedded. The Dresden Elbe valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it extends some 18 kilometres along the Elbe river from Übigau Palace and Ostragehege fields to the Pillnitz Palace and the Elbe River island. The Dresden Elbe valley features a combination of landscape and culture which is crowned by the Pillnitz Palace and the centre of Dresden with its many monuments and parks.

Dresden is a modern city with lots of history inside, and as the inhabitants are known for their special charm, every visitor will feel welcome immediately. Again there is a great variety of interesting places to see, such as the “Frauenkirche” (Church Of Our Lady), the Dresden Zwinger , the Semper Opera House and the Royal Palace , to name just a few. There are magnificent promenades along the river Elbe which wait to be discovered as well as many museums and cultural highlights awaiting the interested visitor. The christmas market is located in the historic Old Town at the “Frauenkirche” (Church Of Our Lady).

Of course the Christmas Market in Dresden , the “ Striezelmarkt ” which dates back to 1434. It is located on the “Altmarkt” Market Square, located right in the historical city center of Dresden. A must try when you visit the Christmas Market in Dresden is the “ Dresden Christstollen ”, a local Christmas Cake, very delicious and famous and throughout Germany. The Striezelmarkt is also popular for its Christmas pyramids, smoking figures and candle holders from which are traditionally made in the  nearby mountains of the “ Erzgebirge “. At the Christmas Market in Dresden you also find the world’s tallest Christmas pyramid  and the world’s biggest nut cracker .

Day 5 Weimar

Driving time from Dresden to Weimar on Day 5 of your Central Germany Christmas Highlights Self-drive Tour takes about two hours. Weimar is famous for its cultural heritage, home of many musicians, writers and poets such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller . Your hotel is located in walking distance from Weimar Central Station. From your hotel a nice walk through the Carl-August-Alley will take you into the inner circle of the Old Town. The whole town can easily be visited by foot. Weimar is one of the most historic cities in Germany and it is as the place where Germany’s first democratic constitution was signed after the First World War, giving its name to the “ Weimar Republic ” period in German politics from 1919 to 1933. Adolf Hitler often visited the city – probably he liked the classic touch of Weimar seeing himself in the long tradition of German Classics. At the Hotel Elephant , which is located right at the market square, Hitler had the hotel room renovated for him. The room still exists and it has a balcony towards the market place from where he often greeted crowds.Among the many sights to visit in Weimar is the City Palace . Inside there are memorial rooms in honor of Christoph Martin Wieland, Johann Gottfried Herder, Friedrich Schiller and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and also houses the Palace Museum with its large painting collection. If you plan to visit the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek  (historical library) with its beautiful Rococo hall you will have to let us know in advance so we can purchase tickets for you, waiting time is up to 6 month. The Goethe National Museum , the Schiller House as well as the  Liszt House are among sights to visit. The  Market Place and the “ Park an der Ilm ”, a beautiful park located close to the Market place at the Ilm River, with Goethes Gartenhaus (Garden House). If you are interested in the architecture of the “Bauhaus” you may want to visit the Bauhaus Museum .

The Christmas Market in Weimar  is located at the historical Market square, again a very romantic setting. And of course you have all the culinary delights the state of Thuringan has to offer. Do not miss to try a  Thuringer Rostbratwurst , a Thuringian sausage, which Weimar is popular for. There is a great competition on who produces the best Thuringian sausage, Weimar or Erfurt, so you have to try (at least) one in Weimar and one in Erfurt, where you will be traveling tomorrow. And also in Weimar you find many traditional stands where you can purchase the beautiful Christmas decorations from the Mountains of the Erzgebirge.

Day 6 Erfurt

At your convenience drive on to Erfurt – driving time is less than 40 minutes. See where Martin Luther studied, bow heads where he prayed and walk the same medieval streets . At almost every turn, there’s a reminder of the man who launched the Reformation . Erfurt was the young Luther’s spiritual home. In 1505 he graduated from the University with a Masters in philosophy. It is said that a violent storm close to Erfurt that same year prompted him to become a monk at the Augustinerkloster ( Augustinian Monastery ) in gratitude for his survival. Martin Luther stayed there until 1511 and was ordained as a priest in St. Mary’s Cathedral . Even after he had left the city, he often returned to preach to enthusiastic crowds, in the university church ( St. Michael’s ) for example. It has been more than 500 years since Luther was a student at the collegium maius, the old Erfurt University ’s main building, which is now being restored. The Augustinian Monastery, dating back to 1277, houses an exhibition that shows the life and work of its most renowned resident. You can visit Luther’s cell in addition to its impressive library with many rare books. Another important structure in Erfurt is the Barfusserkirche , or the black-friars’ “ Church of the Barefooted .” Most of the church was destroyed in 1944, but even in the present condition the church is one of the greatest examples of German ecclesiastical architecture of the 14th and 15th centuries. Luther also preached here in 1529 before the Franciscan monastery was discontinued. Other significant sites for those interested in the Reformation and its leader are the Luther monument (next to the Merchants’ Church on the Anger road) and the “ Haus Zum Schwarzen Horn ” at Michaelisstrasse 48. This building housed Mathes Maler’s printing workshop, where many of Luther’s pamphlets were printed.

In Erfurt you will find one of the loveliest Christmas Market  – located in the most beautiful historical setting at the “Domplatz” (at St. Mary’s Cathedral  which creates a very romantic and unique Christmas Market atmosphere. Do not miss to try the Erfurt version of the Thuringer Rostbratwurst  (Thuringian sausage) and decide for yourself, which one is the best. You will find several grills where these delicious sausages are being served!

Day 7 Frankfurt

On your way to Frankfurt International Airport you may want to stop in Eisenach for a visit Wartburg Castle and  at Frankfurt Chritsmas Market . In 1521, while fleeing from the wrath of the Pope, Luther took refuge in here after a fake kidnapping staged by his friend and protector, Frederick the Wise. Visit the Castle which for many is the most impressing Castle in Germany and stand in the very room where Luther translated Jerome’s Vulgate into the German New Testament . There are guided tours in English at the Wartburg. When you are finished, you can drive into Eisenach and visit the sights in the city center like the Luther House Museum with its fascinating displays about the time & culture of Luther and St George’s (Georgenkirche) Church connected with both Martin Luther and Johann Sebastian Bach. Speaking about Bach: the Bach House Museum is a must-see!

Continue to Frankfurt  – a very modern metropolis which nevertheless offers many historic sites such as the Romerberg  (hill of the Romans) with its beautifully restored timber-framed houses , of course the Goethe Haus where the world famous poet once lived, the Paulskirche , symbol for democracy and freedom in Germany, “ Alt-Sachsenhausen “, where in Schellgasse number 6 you will find Frankfurt’s oldest timber-framed house which was built around 1291, to name only a few of Frankfurt’s historic landmarks.

The Frankfurt museum riverbank is one of the most important locations for museums in Germany and Europe. The exhibition buildings are lined up on both sides of the Main riverbank, several famous museums are to be found in the city centre. Visit the “ Stadel “, the German Museum of Architecture as well as the Museum of Applied Art or the “ Schirn Kunsthalle ” to name only a very few. Don’t miss out on Frankfurt’s “ Zeil “, a huge pedestrian zone where shopping is the name of the game. So, if you arrive early enough in Frankfurt, visiting this interesting metropolis is certainly worthwhile.

Frankfurt’s Christmas market is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany, its beginnings reaching back to the year 1393. The location on Roemerberg square is very romantic, the market attracts over 3 million visitors every year. Advent concerts and trumpet-playing from the tower of St.-Nicholas’s -Church are part of the daily program. in the evening return your rental car at Frankfurt International Airport. You will stay the night before your departure at an airport hotel which is connected right to the airport terminal (please note: if you do not fly out the next morning we can adjust this tour of course so you stay in the City Center).

8-DAY ROMANTIC ROAD CHRISTMAS TOUR We completed our tour and I wanted to thank you for the fine work you did in arranging everything for us. The car was the perfect size! As we went from Christmas Market to Christmas Market, the amount of gifts we purchased grew to the point where we had to purchase another suitcase to carry all the gifts home with us. All of the hotels were very well located. It was wonderful staying close to or in the old parts of the cities we visited. The weather was a bit difficult, being cold and snowy at times….We loved your suggested dining places and suggest that you include more of these in your tour information sheets for other cities. When there are two nights, it would be nice to have two separate restaurants to visit. In Wurzburg, we particularly enjoyed the Ratskeller. Also, I would suggest that in your tour information sheets that you include the German names for the places to visit either instead of or along with the English translation. The navigation system we brought with us did not have the English translations for any of the tour stops. Also, if we had to ask for help from people in the towns we visited, the German name would be very important. – Bob E.,Chicago, USA

We are fortunate to have travelers from all over the world on our pre-packaged tours and we would love to have your feedback! If you have been traveling along this tour with us please leave us a review below – we greatly appreciate your time! (your Email address will not be displayed)

Christmas Markets in Germany by Train: A Complete Itinerary

How to visit the German Christmas markets - collage of Nuremberg and Munich markets with decorated sleigh

If you want a major dose of holiday cheer in December, head to Germany’s Christmas markets. Warm spiced cider, inviting wooden chalets, and twinkling lights will surely ward off your winter blues. And thanks to the country’s excellent public transit system, visiting Christmas markets in Germany by train is easy and efficient.

Cologne Cathedral and Christmas markets in Germany by train.

Germany’s cities and villages have been hosting Christmas Markets for centuries. They began in the Middle Ages as “winter markets”, where tradesmen sold their goods to the locals during Advent.

As time went on, these markets grew from small events lasting a few days to the epic, month-long celebrations we see today.

While the first recorded winter market was held in Vienna in 1298, the city of Dresden, Germany held the first so-called “Christmas market” in 1434. With this much history behind them, it’s no surprise that German Christmas Markets are spectacular events!

Although each market is unique, there are a few elements that you’ll find across the country. Traditional food and drink are a huge draw, with sausage and glühwein ( mulled wine) being the most popular.

Merchants sell handmade Christmas ornaments, snow globes, nativity figurines, and other holiday decorations. And of course, there will be a multi-story Christmas tree towering over everything.

Before you jump into the Germany Christmas market itinerary like a kid on Christmas morning, take a look at the tips below. I promise they’ll save you a lot of headache, and even a bit of money!

Germany Christmas Market Guide

Tips for visiting germany christmas markets, the best time to visit christmas markets in germany by train, germany christmas market itinerary.

Nuremberg Christmas Market panorama at night.

Eat (and drink) the local specialities

Food and drink play a major role in Germany’s Christmas markets. The moment you enter, you can smell the smoke from grilling sausages and the fruity, spicy aroma of  glühwein.

While staples like bratwurst, potato pancakes (r eibekuchen ), and hot chocolate are available everywhere, each region and city has its own local specialties.

Nuremberg is famous for lebkuchen , a gingerbread-like cookie with a soft texture. Frankfurt markets sell mulled apfelwein , a wine made from pressed apples. And in Munich, you’ll find Bavarian specialties like white sausage and  käsespätzle , a cheesy dumpling noodle dish topped with fried onions.

Book your hotel rooms early

Table and bookshelf in lobby of Motel One Frankfurt hotel lobby.

German Christmas markets draw visitors from all over the world. To have any hope of booking at a reasonably priced hotel, you need to reserve your rooms at least a month in advance . Two months is better.

I’ve included my detailed hotel recommendations for each city further down the post. But here’s a quick list for your reference:

  • Bensons Hotel  in Aachen
  • Hyatt Regency Köln  in Cologne
  • Motel One Frankfurt-Römer  in Frankfurt
  • Gideon Hotel  in Nuremberg
  • Hotel Mirabell  in Munich

Learn a few German phrases

I always learn a few basic phrases before traveling abroad. Although everyone spoke English at the markets we visited, I always feel better when I can ask for things and say “thank you” in the local language.

Here are some helpful phrases for your German Christmas market trip:

  • Yes – Ja ( ya )
  • No – Nein ( nine )
  • Pardon Me – Entschuldigung ( en-SHUL-di-gung )
  • Thank You – Danke ( DAWN-kuh )
  • Please – Bitte ( BIT-eh )
  • I don’t speak German – Ich spreche kein Deutsch ( ish SPRE-ke kine doitch )
  • Water – Wasser (VA-sa)
  • One – Ein ( eyen )
  • Two -Zwei ( zveye )

Always carry cash

Snow globes and Santa decorations for sale during this Germany Christmas market itinerary.

If you plan to do more than window shop at the German Christmas markets, you’ll need to bring euros. While some stalls in big cities like Frankfurt accept card payments over a certain threshold, most operate in cash only. Be sure to bring a coin purse to hold your change!

Visit the popular German Christmas markets twice

If you follow me on Instagram , you know that I like to keep it real. Some Instagrammers might have you thinking the markets are charming, mostly empty places where you can take a selfie with no one in the background. Unfortunately, the most popular German Christmas markets are as crowded as Disneyland during peak times!

As someone who gets terribly stressed out in crowded situations, I designed my Germany Christmas market itinerary to allow for nighttime and daytime visits in each city.

While the markets have a more magical, illuminated atmosphere at night, they’re also packed with people. In fact, I can only describe our experience in Cologne at night as being swept away in a human river, with no chance to go against the flow.

But during the day (especially a weekday), it’s far easier to enjoy the stalls and ambiance at your own pace. This is the best time to shop, take photos, and walk around with your mulled wine.

Scope out the mugs and collect your favorites

Red boot and tall frosted mugs at Munich Christmas market.

One of my favorite things about Christmas markets in Germany are the sustainability practices. Food comes in biodegradable containers with wood utensils. And instead of plastic cups, each market has beautiful mugs for serving drinks.

They use a deposit system for the mugs ( pfand in German), so you’ll pay an extra 3-5 euros for your first drink. You use the same mug for refills, and when you’re finished drinking, you can return the mug to any drink stall in that market for your deposit.

Within each of the cities in this itinerary, there are multiple markets, and each market has its own signature mug. I like to scope out the options at night, and then return the next day to buy my favorite mug. The cute red boot pictured above is now a permanent part of my Christmas decor!

Download the DB Navigator App

I absolutely love the DB Navigator App for getting around Germany via public transit. DB (Deutsche Bahn) is the main train operator in Germany, and their app lets you purchase tickets and make seat reservations right from your phone.

When you’re visiting Christmas markets in Germany by train, it’s super convenient to skip the ticket machines and hop right on the next available train. You’ll even get notifications if your journey has been delayed, or if there’s been a platform change.

Consider buying a German rail pass

I’m all about saving money when traveling , and one easy way to do that is by purchasing rail passes. The German Rail Pass  gives you unlimited rides on all DB trains (and some other operators), including the fast ICE trains that connect the major cities on this itinerary. There are 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, and 15 day passes, with consecutive and non-consecutive day options.

Because my husband and I were traveling together, we were able to buy the Twin 5-day pass, which saved a bit of money over buying individual tickets. It also came in handy when delays and cancellations happened, because we could simply change our route rather than be stuck waiting hours for the next train.

Note that only residents outside of Europe, Turkey and Russia are eligible to buy the pass. However, the sales page uses your passport’s issuing country, so it’s possible to buy the pass if you’re currently traveling in Europe.

Decorated wood chalet in Munich, the last spot on this Christmas markets in Germany by train.

Early December is the best time to do a Germany Christmas market trip. While all of the markets on this itinerary open sometime during the last week of November, the opening ceremonies draw extremely large crowds.

Visiting the first week of December is ideal because most people will still be at work/school during the day. As the month goes on, more and more Europeans will take their winter holiday, and crowds peak in the days leading up to Christmas.

Save me for later!

The Best Christmas Markets in Germany - Cologne Christmas market stage and Frankfurt Christmas market at night

To experience as much holiday charm as possible, I put together a Germany Christmas market itinerary that spans four regions.

Although we visited all five cities in five days, you could certainly spend an extra night in a few of them. We ended up staying in Munich for two days to do some sightseeing, and Nuremberg’s history and charm deserves an extra day as well.

Note that we started our Christmas market trip by spending one day in Brussels , so Aachen was our first stop in Germany. Depending on where you’re starting your journey (or if you’re flying into the country), you may want to do this itinerary in reverse, beginning with Munich.

As of September 2023, all of the cities on this German Christmas market itinerary are scheduled to be open for the season. Please be sure to follow local guidelines and review your travel plans in advance of visiting!

View of Aachen Christmas market stalls with cathedral in background.

Aachen was my favorite German Christmas market of the trip. A massive cathedral dominates the town center, creating a fairytale-esque atmosphere. And the surrounding streets and alleys were beautifully decorated with garland, Christmas trees, and enticing window displays.

Hundreds of stalls radiate out from the cathedral, covering the Munsterplatz and the Katschhof. Opposite the cathedral stands the Rathaus (town hall), and the Marketplatz behind also has a large set of stalls. Be sure to try the Aachener Printen , a type of lebkuchen shaped like a flat rectangle.

While you’re in Aachen, take the time to go inside the Aachen Cathedral, which is one of the oldest in Europe. It’s also the final resting place of Charlemagne.

Before you leave, swing by the Elisenbrunnen. This neoclassical pavilion sits atop a thermal spring, and you can touch the hot water that comes out its fountains.

Aachen old town street at night with Christmas market illumination.

Where to stay

Bensons Hotel is perfectly located between the markets and Aachen train station. It’s super convenient to hop off the train, walk to the hotel to drop your bags, and head straight to the markets. Being a 10 minute walk from the cathedral is a nice bonus, especially if a rain shower forces you to retreat early.

Cologne Christmas market stage at night with illuminated Christmas tree.

After spending two days in Cologne in the summer of 2018, I vowed to return for the famous Cologne Christmas market. The Cologne Cathedral is my favorite building in Europe, and seeing hundreds of stalls and twinkling lights against its magnificent backdrop was truly a bucket list-worthy experience.

Cologne has SEVEN Christmas markets spread across the city! Each one has its own unique charms (and collectible mugs), so I suggest visiting most or all if you can.

  • Old Market:  A large ice rink and carnival rides are a favorite with children
  • Angel’s Market:  Lovely wooden chalets and twinkling lights make this market whimsical
  • Cathedral Market : Cologne’s largest and most famous market, with over 160 traditional stalls and a live music stage
  • Heavenue Market : Heavenue is put on by the LGBT community, but all are welcome to enjoy the fun atmosphere
  • Village of St. Nicholas : Situated next to the Hahnentorburg gate, this market has a medieval village feel
  • Stadtgarden: The Belgian quarter is one of my favorite Cologne neighborhoods, and its Stadtgarden village offers a cozy escape from the more crowded markets
  • Harbour Market:  Located on the Rhine river next to the Chocolate museum, this market boasts a decorated sailing ship and seafood stalls

Entrance to traditional German Christmas market itinerary location in Cologne, with text "Heinzels Wintermarchen".

If you’re looking to splash out on a great hotel experience, I highly recommend the Hyatt Regency Köln . It’s directly across the river from the Cologne Cathedral, giving you easy access to the city’s major markets.

Aside from location, the hotel itself is gorgeous, full of amenities, and is famous for its lavish Sunday brunch. If you want incredible views and easy access to the sights, I highly recommend staying here.

Frankfurt German Christmas Market at night with chalet and carousel.

Frankfurt has a beautiful old town, and its spectacular Christmas market transforms the area into a winter wonderland. Surrounded by colorful half-timbered buildings and a stunning town hall, the Römerberg hosts the bulk of Frankfurt’s stalls. There’s even an illuminated vintage carousel to dial up the magic factor!

In addition to the Römerberg market, there’s a smaller group of stalls (and another carousel) at the Paulsplatz. It’s a good place to escape the crowds for a drink.

If you have the time (and energy), pay 3 euros to climb the 300 steps of Frankfurt Cathedral tower. The 360 degree views from the top are incredible, offering a birds-eye perspective of the markets below.

I also suggest a stroll along the River Main and across the Eiserner Steg (Iron Bridge). The Sachsenhausen neighborhood south of the river is full of lovely houses, and there are plenty of pubs serving the city’s signature apfelwein .

Two hands holding glasses of apfelwein with Frankfurt Christmas market in background.

For maximum convenience at a reasonable price, book a room at Motel One Frankfurt-Römer . Don’t let the name fool you: this chic hotel has modern amenities, an impressive bar and lounge area, and super comfy beds. Plus, it’s under a five minute walk to the markets, and a 15 minute walk to Frankfurt train station.

Reserve a room at Motel One Frankfurt-Römer!

Nuremberg Christmas market red and white striped roof with cathedral in distance.

Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt is one of the largest and most popular Christmas markets in the world.

Part of the draw is the Christ Child ( Christkind ) tradition, where a young woman is elected to dress up in an elaborate white and gold dress complete with crown and wings. The Christkind  presides over the market’s opening ceremony, gives a speech to kick off the festivities, and also visits children in the market, schools, and hospitals.

The main market sprawls across the Hauptmarkt square in front of Nuremberg’s Gothic-style Church of Our Lady. Here, traditional wooden stalls are topped with red and white striped roofs, turning the area into a candy cane-esque wonderland. Don’t forget to eat the famous lebkuchen  while you’re here!

In the adjacent side streets, you’ll find the Market of the Sister Cities, where vendors from around the world sell everything from African flutes to Italian ham. There’s also a Children’s Market nearby, with pretty carousels, gingerbread houses, and other kid-friendly stalls and activities.

Aside from the amazing markets, Nuremberg has a lot to offer. There are seven charming bridges that cross the Pegnitz River, and the Maxbrücke and covered Henkerbrücke are most iconic.

The Weißgerbergasse is lined with photogenic half-timbered shops and restaurants. And if you have extra time to spend, check out the Memorium Nuremberg Trials, a museum above the courthouse where the Nuremberg Trials were held.

Nuremburg old town cobblestone street with half timbered buildings.

It’s hard to beat the Gideon Hotel on location and price. There are market stalls directly outside the hotel–including a glühwein vendor–and the train station is a short walk down the street. Despite all this, our room was quiet (a must for me) and had stellar views over the city.

Sunset at the Munich Germany Christmas market in front of Rathaus.

The final city on this German Christmas market itinerary hosts over a dozen markets ( click here for the complete list). Munich’s biggest is the Christkindlmarkt Marienplatz, located next to the gorgeous Rathaus. The combination of cute stalls, ornate architecture, and giant Christmas tree is truly mesmerizing.

For a more secluded experience, head to the Residenz Christmas Village. To reach this small market, head through the covered archway across from the Munich Residenz palace. I loved the calmer feeling of this courtyard location after the bustle of the Marienplatz.

Munich’s vast English Garden hosts its own market near the Chinese tower in the center. It’s further away from the crowds, and the trees make it feel like a hidden gem in the forest.

If you want a modern twist on tradition, check out the Tollwood winter festival. Held at the same site as Oktoberfest, Tollwood is closer to Edinburgh Fringe than your typical German markets. Live music, international food, and sustainable crafts offer a refreshing break from the usual fare.

We also spent an extra day in Munich to do some sightseeing. I highly recommend a visit to Nymphenburg Palace, an opulent estate with multiple residences and serene grounds. The Munich Residenz is another lavish building with state rooms and several museums.

If you can spend 3 days in Munich (or more), I also suggest adding a day trip to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. However, you can’t use your German Rail Pass to get there, and the trip involves multiple modes of public transit.

Luckily, there are a number of day trip operators that run tours to Neuschwanstein from Munich , making it easy to visit the place that inspired Disney’s Cinderella Castle.

Courtyard German Christmas market in Munich with stall serving bratwurst.

Munich is a big city with tons of hotel options. We chose to stay at Hotel Mirabell for two nights because of the price and proximity to the train station. Although it’s a 15 minute walk to the main market, it’s a short 5 minute walk to the Tollwood winter festival.

Reserve at the Hotel Mirabell now!

Thank you for this scintillating virtual tour. I would recommend to readers a stop in Regensburg enroute from Nuremberg to Munich. I lived in the Oberpfalz region for a couple of years and always enjoyed the Regensburg Christkindle Market, the old cathedral and the bridge over the Danube. My favorite hotel in Regensburg is the Hotel Ophree. Each room is decorated differently with antique furniture. It’s more of an adults only hotel if you’re traveling with children. I would also add Rothenburg Oder Tauber, the medieval walled city on the Tauber. It’s only accessible by regional train, but well worth the side trip.

Thanks for taking the time to add all the details. I want to do a similar journey by train and you given me enough to start planning for 2022.

Thank you very much for a great article. I am planning a trip this year to visit Christmas Markets in Germany and your itinerary by train is excellent.

Would you mind saying how much the total trip cost you? I’m planning an almost identical Christmas Market trip like this and would love to compare! Thanks!

Sorry, I took this trip 3 years ago and cannot remember the total cost! The biggest expenses were hotels and trains, as Christmas is a popular time for traveling in Germany and rooms are very pricey. We paid around 150EUR per night for mid-range hotels, plus 165EUR each for DB Rail Passes (the price has likely gone up since).

Would you recommend a rental car over the train?

Hi Brad, I’d personally stick with the train for this itinerary as it’s very easy to get from city to city. Renting a car would be far more expensive given the cost of petrol, and you may get caught up in adverse road conditions if it were to snow.

germany christmas market tours

Last year, I spent a week hopping around Germany’s Bavaria region in December, exploring several different Christmas markets.  What a great trip! I knew I’d have fun, but I was genuinely surprised at what a relaxing and delightful week it was. How could you not enjoy a week of holiday spirit, mulled wine, and delicious food?

At the time I wrote a post showcasing my favorite parts of the trip , but I pointed out that it was December and it would make more sense to publish a trip planning post in September or so. And here we are!

Why plan a German Christmas markets trip?

I’m not super-big on Christmas. As an American, I find that most of our country’s Christmas events revolve around two things: children and consumerism. If it’s not about Santa and reindeer taking center stage, it’s about trying to get you to spend as much money as possible, stressed-out shoppers swarming as cheesy Christmas music blasts in every direction. (I like exactly one Christmas song and it’s “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway. “Dominick the Donkey” can jump off a cliff and die.)

If you’re looking for an adult-oriented Christmas activity, your two choices are watching  Love, Actually and drinking your face off at an office Christmas party.

That’s not the case in Germany.  German Christmas markets are located in virtually every town. Though they have their share of children’s sections and goods for sale, these markets are first and foremost for adults looking to have a good time. They’re about eating delicious food, munching on lebkuchen (gingerbread) and drinking  glühwein (mulled wine) or kinderpunsch (nonalcoholic fruit punch). They’re about spending a jolly good time with your friends — but they’re not about getting drunk.

My German friends tell me that starting in late November, nobody goes out to bars — everyone just meets at the market!

Here are my tips for planning a German Christmas markets trip:

germany christmas market tours

Spend time researching the best Christmas markets in Germany.

If you’re planning a Christmas markets trip, make sure to hit up one of the best ones. I encourage you to do your own research and see what appeals to you personally, but here are some of the notable ones:

Nuremberg is home to the largest Christmas market in the world.

Dresden is home to the oldest Christmas market in the world.

Berlin has more than 60 different Christmas markets; Munich has more than 30.

Konstanz is famous for its stunning location on the banks of Lake Constance, the Alps in the background.

There are LGBT-oriented Pink Markets in Munich, Frankfurt, and Cologne.

Plan a trip between late November and December 23.

Germany’s Christmas markets usually start around November 20-25 or so, and the final date is almost always December 23, as Germans celebrate Christmas on December 24. Double-check the dates before you book your trip. Whatever you do, don’t come to Germany and expect markets to stick around after Christmas!

Concentrate on one region in Germany and explore it in depth.

As tempting as it may be to cover Germany from corner to corner, I recommend planning a trip concentrated on one region. Distances will be shorter, but there will still be a lot of variety in the cities and towns you visit, and you’ll get to know the nuances of a region and the slight variations in the different towns.

I recommend basing from two or three cities and using the train to make day trips.

Get a German Rail Pass.

Take it from me — the best way to travel Germany is by train! I absolutely love traveling Europe by train and Germany has some of the nicest trains on the continent.

Getting a German Rail Pass can be a great way to save money. You can either get a pass that covers 3-15 days of unlimited travel or get 3-15 days of train travel within a month. I recommend the latter. For my trip (see the itinerary below), a pass for 5 days of rail within a month would cover all the trains I needed.

In Germany you don’t need to book reservations on most trains, so you can simply show up at the station, hop on a train, and show your pass to the conductor when he or she comes by. That’s a big difference from France or Spain, where you often have to book trains in advance and pay a supplemental fee, even with a pass.

Even so, it’s a good idea to plan out your journeys in advance and price them out on bahn.de , Germany’s rail site. It might be cheaper to buy tickets individually or just buy the rail pass to cover the long journeys while paying for cheap short journeys out of pocket.

Visit small towns as well as cities.

Over the years I’ve noticed that American tourists visiting Europe tend to travel from major city to major city, concentrating on the big names and ignoring the smaller towns. European tourists are different, however — they tend to visit one major city and travel around the surrounding region. For exploring Christmas markets, take the European approach.

Many of my German friends tell me they prefer the Christmas markets in smaller cities, as they tend to be less congested.

Don’t think that for a Germany trip you need to visit Munich, Berlin, and Hamburg. You could concentrate on Munich and visit Augsburg, Regensburg, Passau, and Nuremberg. You could concentrate on Berlin and visit Potsdam, Leipzig, and Dresden. You could concentrate on Hamburg and visit Lübeck and Bremen.

As much as I enjoyed Bamberg and Passau, I haven’t visited as many small towns in Germany as I’d have liked to — some high on my list are Rothenberg ob der Tauber, Quedlinburg, and Trier.

Try each town’s local delicacies.

Each German town has its own food specialties, whether it’s a certain kind of sausage or a baked good you’d struggle to find elsewhere. Try them all! Any dish that has the name of the town in it is usually a local dish. Not sure? Ask! Most Germans speak at least a little bit of English and all Germans are eager to show off their towns.

Each town has its own handicrafts, too. The prune people, pictured above, are a specialty of Nuremberg and can be found throughout Bavaria.

Dress warmly and wear good shoes.

The forecast might not look too cold, especially if you’re used to freezing winters, but the cold compounds when you’re outside for hours at a time. Likewise, you’ll be standing for hours, and you’ll want your feet to be as comfortable as possible. This is a trip for your heaviest winter coat, gloves, scarves, hats, thick socks.

I am a huge fan of Speakeasy Travel Supply scarves , which have a secret passport pocket and are ideal for travel. Get 10% off with the code ADVKATE.

Consider investing in smartphone gloves , which allow you to keep your fingers warm while Instagramming away.

For shoes, you don’t have to wear sneakers — but wear shoes that are warm and have good support. I wore knee-high leather boots most days.

Collect the glühwein mugs!

Glühwein is the primary beverage of German Christmas markets, and each year, the cities create new designs for their mugs. When you order glühwein, you pay a small deposit for the mug — usually around two euros. You can return the mug if you’d like and get your deposit back, or you can keep it! They make great souvenirs to bring home.

I would love to have a Christmas party at my place this year. We’ll see if that actually happens, but if I do, I am going to have everyone drinking out of my glühwein mugs!

If you see something weird…buy it!

You’ll see the occasional weird and awesome item for sale at a Christmas market, buy it!  Don’t assume you can find one in the next town — you might not see another one again. And I guarantee you will find a use for it, or a friend for whom it’s a perfect gift.

One of my regrets is that I didn’t buy any of the hunky merman ornaments for sale at the Pink Market in Munich. At the time, I told myself, “What are you even going to do with that, Kate?” Well, I bet you I would have found a use for it!

My Bavaria Christmas Market Itinerary

Last year I traveled around Bavaria, which is a beautiful part of Germany. I joke that Bavaria is the “Texas of Germany” — it’s home to traditions like beer steins and lederhosen that people tend to associate with all of Germany but happen to be Bavarian, not German. You see lederhosen in Berlin about as often as you see cowboy hats in New York — it’s not a thing there .

Bavaria is absolutely gorgeous, though. Rolling hills and rivers in the countryside. Pastel-colored old towns. Gothic churches. And plenty of biergartens and beer halls! Bavaria by no means represents all of Germany, but if you want to concentrate on one region, it’s a terrific choice. Here was my itinerary:

  • Two nights in Munich spent at a conference
  • Three nights in Nuremberg, including a day trip to Bamberg
  • One night in Regensburg
  • One night in Passau
  • One more night in Munich

This itinerary worked well, but I’m not the biggest fan of switching accommodation frequently, so I would recommend spending two nights in Regensburg and doing a day trip to Passau instead. Another Bavarian city that I love is Augsburg; I recommend adding it to your itinerary if you have extra time.

Essential Info: I flew in and out of Munich and traveled by train throughout Bavaria. My tickets were  purchased a la carte, but you might save money with a Eurail (non-EU resident) or Interrail (EU resident) pass or the German Rail Pass , which is strictly for Germany. I recommend pricing out your legs and comparing the total cost. Don’t forget day trips! Germany is one of the best countries to use rail passes because you almost never have to pay additional reservation fees for the fast trains, unlike France, Italy, and Spain. Plus, if you’re over 26, you’re automatically in first class. For a Christmas market trip or a trip where you’re doing lots of day trips, I find it best to stay in a hotel within a short walk of the train station (especially in small towns) because it will make your life a million times easier. In Munich I stayed at the Hotel Präsident , a good, central three-star close to the main train station and in walking distance of a lot of Munich attractions. Rates from 192 EUR ($199). I also stayed at the Westin Grand Munich Hotel , an excellent five-star business hotel, but it’s not in the center of town; it’s well connected by U-bahn though. Rates from 438 EUR ($516).  Find more Munich hotels here . In Nuremberg I stayed at the Congress Hotel Mercure Nürnberg , which I do not recommend because it’s isolated and far from everything (11-minute walk to U-bahn or 14 EUR ($16.50) taxi to the train station), and one night the front desk gave my key out to a stranger who barged into my room. (Always double-lock your door!!!) The manager was good about making things right, but I wouldn’t stay there again because of the location. Rates from 94 EUR ($111).  Find other Nuremberg hotels here . In Regensburg I stayed at the Hotel Central Regensburg City Centre , which was spacious, comfortable, close to the train station and a short walk from the old town. Rates from 84 EUR ($99).  Find more Regebsurg hotels here . In Passau I stayed at the IBB Hotel Passau City Centre , a good mid-range hotel, which was right across from the train station and a short walk from the old town. Rates from 75 EUR ($88).  Find more Passau hotels here . Don’t visit Germany without travel insurance. I use and recommend World Nomads . On this trip I had to visit the hospital after hitting my head and sustaining a concussion. The ER I visited in Munich, Klinikum der Universität München, charges non-EU insurance-holding residents 300 EUR ($353), but because I use World Nomads, I got that money refunded!
