LIVE REVIEW: RED HOT SUMMER TOUR featuring Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, Missy Higgins, Mark Seymour, Ian Moss & Troy Cassar-Daley and Vika & Linda

Sandalford winery, wa - saturday 18th march 2023.

21 March 2023 Rossco Hunter

bernard fanning tour 2023

It’s a warm autumn day in Perth and today has been earmarked in 14,000+ people’s calendars for quite sometime – since the date was locked in for this amazing venue, the beautiful Sandalford Winery. Kick off is scheduled for 1pm – the gates will open and the flood of eager music aficionados will trickle down the hill, finding the path of least resistance to secure their piece of real-estate to witness this Australian rich performance. Once their location is locked in, the trek begins back up the hill to secure sufficient hydration before Vika & Linda open their account.

bernard fanning tour 2023

Vika & Linda burst onto the stage with a ton of energy and thanked the crowd for their amazing support. Two power-house female vocalists from my era (Black Sorrows), rocking out matching outfits with their unique twists a-typical of siblings. They share stories of their musical journey from times gone by travelling the world with the Black Sorrows, working with both Paul Kelly, Mark Seymour and carving out their successful sisterly voyage.  It was a generous setlist consisting of new and older tracks – highlight for me was “Never Let Me Go”. That song is one of my personal favourites, with both Vika and Linda sounding just as crisp as the version I have in my collection (Harley and Rose album 1990) – a real tribute to just how good they are. The bar had been set really high!

bernard fanning tour 2023

It is a rare moment to capture two different genres crossing over live on stage, especially when those genres are headlined by two of the most iconic Australian performers that I have ever seen. Troy Cassar-Daley and Ian Moss . I have one huge problem with this act – a glaring issue… both artists were on each side of the stage and I only have one set of eyes. How do I focus on both amazing artists – the fear of missing out was intense….. who’s idea was this? Talk about first world problems. The chemistry on stage was electric, with each artist bringing their own personality, but they were keen on one upping the other in a game of musical tag. The banter was hilarious and genuine (particularly around the merch). Highlight for me was the version of “Bow River”. Both Troy and Ian are spectacular to watch and compliment each other really well … we off to a flying start!!!

bernard fanning tour 2023

Up next was Mark Seymour , and just when you thought you could not get anymore people into the standing only section of Red Hot Summer, the Mark Seymour fans said, “Hold my beer” with the section packed tighter than a parachute. From beyond the front rail it felt that we had just let in another 5000 more people, to the point that punters had to breathe in rhythm because of the lack of space. Mark delivered hits from his solo back catalogue right through to the Hunters & Collectors, keeping the faithful away from the bar and singing in tune. Highlight for me was the 14,000+ sing-along of “When The River Runs Dry”, the 1989 classic and there was no one in that winery that was not singing along – a real testament to just how good Mark is and how he has influenced so many people’s music taste.

bernard fanning tour 2023

Like a cool Autumn breeze Missy Higgins floats across the stage – smile brimming from ear to ear, you just can’t help smiling as well, she is so infectious – we all know we are if for an absolute treat. Rocking a blue jumpsuit, she looks stunning and we all know Missy is ready to put on a stellar show. Perched in front of her trusty set of keys Missy gets to work quickly, conversing with her fans about her tour so far, her appreciation for the moment and her private life (her recent divorce) paying special mention to her recent tattoo and its significance. Missy shares with us her affinity with WA and the special place it holds in her heart for the music that she writes. It is a personal set that everyone loves. Highlight for me was “Special Two”, its powerfulness shared among the countless fans.

bernard fanning tour 2023

Bernard Fanning enters the entertainment arena – there is a certain aura about him, joking with the fans you can tell he is excited to be here. It feels like he is a family member that has been away for so many years and we finally have him home, we are ecstatic to see him and hear of his tales of musical grandeur. Bernard gives the fans what they crave – the old, the new and the powder……I know there is not enough time of his set to give me (personally) every song I love from this talented champion but that’s ok. He sung, he strummed and he stunned!!!! Lyrically he delivered on point with little reprieve and all I know is that massive bar up the back would have been empty for his whole set……empty!!! Highlight for me, and it’s a tough one but  I would have to say “Wish You Well” off one of the most poignant albums for me “Tea & Sympathy” – truly awe inspiring.

bernard fanning tour 2023

And then there was Paul…… WOW ……I have always loved Paul Kelly . There is something about his music , his story telling, his personal spin, which allows to him to guide you through the Paul Kelly Experience. His music is more than just notes or lyrics…. It feels like every song he has written has a piece of Paul in it. It was a path that everyone in the audience was willing to walk – we sung, we laughed, we reminisced, and we felt the every inch of the festival commute. The sold out Red Hot Summer crowd appreciated the technical prowess of such a melodious master. There was no single highlight for me….. the whole set was a highlight – from “How to Make Gravy”, “From Little Thing, Big Things Grow”, “To Her Door”, “Every Fucking City”, “Bradman” plus a heap more. He topped my experience and I was buzzing all the way home.

bernard fanning tour 2023

Red Hot Summer 2023 is like sitting at a table with all your favourite meals (an amazing spread) and it is all you can eat – guaranteed to put you in a food comma, the music will fill your soul and RED HOT SUMMER is the 5 star Michelin chef…….. this event is always high on my social calendar, it is a MUST for any serious music lover.  Make sure you secure your tickets and pencil it in your diary so you can get your music fill.

Bon Appetit!

The Rockpit would like to thank Red Hot Summer , Zaccaria Concerts & Touring & Hot Off The Press for the access and experience.

Thursday 7th December. Bernard Fanning. The Garage, London. It’s been twelve years since Mr Fanning released the fantastic ‘Tea & Sympathy’ and ten years to the day that we saw Powderfinger at Hammersmith Odeon but we have never seen him solo. So expectation levels were high and we were not disappointed.

For those who don’t know Fanning led Aussie band Powderfinger from the late nineties to the late noughties. He has produced several solo albums in the years that followed which brings us here tonight.

It’s the first of two shows at the Garage and certainly tonight it’s sold out. Over here for the first time in a couple of years in support of new album ‘Brutal Dawn’ it’s not the classic play most of the new album and throw in a few oldies. Whilst there are two or three from the new album tonight, the set is chocked full of oldies especially from the aforementioned ‘T&S’ along with covers celebrating the music of the recently departed greats such as Bowie, Prince and Tom Petty and a bit of Powderfinger too. It’s a fans treat and would be difficult to have picked a better set.

It’s a mixture of electric, acoustic, solo and with the excellent band and the evening has a lovely ebb and flow. The quiet acoustic moments are subtle and moving but it’s when the band kick in with Fanning trading up to electric guitar that the place really rocks harking back to his Powderfinger days.

The obvious highlight is one of my favourite songs of the past 15 years ‘Wish you well’ but tonight even that might have been topped by a stunning electric cacophony encore of ‘Which Way Home’ seguing into War Pigs/Iron Man/Fame. Wow, just wow.

Quite fitting that we started the year with Sabbath at the O2 and we end it with a bit of Sabbath too.

A top night and ‘till the next time, keep on rockin y’all

Always a privelage to be so close to music legends like Bernard Fanning. Kasey Chambers. Sahara Bec. Spot on vocals, Colaboration of so many smart talented people on one stage. His new songs were great with talented fiddle n keys adding variation. Charity event with a crowd there for kind reasons other than the music but such an embarrassingly talkative bunch.

Wow!! They were one of the best live music gigs I've ever been too. Really connected with the crowd, totally rocked every song...I couldn't keep still. Better live than on cd. True artists!! That Andrew Morris was unreal, the way he and Bernard worked it together. And Saliana on the fiddle was incredible. I highly recommend getting along to this show!!! X

bernard fanning tour 2023

Russia's war on Ukraine. 20.09.2023

Operational situation

bernard fanning tour 2023

In the operational zone of the Ukrainian Operational-Strategic Group of Forces (OSG) "Khortytsia" on the Bakhmut direction , the Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully repelled enemy attacks in the area of Yahidne. The enemy attempted to regain lost ground in the Andriivka area but was unsuccessful. The Defense Forces continue their assault operations south of Bakhmut, inflicting significant losses on the enemy in personnel and equipment, and consolidating their achieved positions.

In the  “Tavriya" OSG operational zone on the Maryinka direction , the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the Maryinka area, where they made over 13 failed attempts to displace Ukrainian units from their positions. On the Avdiivka and Shakhtarsk directions, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold their defense positions, inflicting losses on the occupying forces in personnel and equipment. On the Zaporizhzhia direction, Russian attacks in the areas of Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, and Novodanylivka have resulted in significant casualties for their own forces, both in personnel and equipment. On the Melitopol direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue the offensive operation, inflicting substantial losses on the Russian troops in personnel and equipment, and wearing down the enemy.

In the operational zone of the  "Odesa" OSG , the Ukrainian Defense Forces are conducting counter-battery warfare, destroying enemy supply depots and inflicting damage on their rear areas.

General conclusion:

The adversary continues to exert pressure on the forces of the Khortytsia OSG northeast of Kupyansk and on the eastern bank of the Oskil River west of Svatove.

The intensity of combat operations on the Novomayorske-Novodonetske line has decreased.

The units of the Khortytsia OSG that participated in the liberation of Klishchiivka demonstrated high morale, sufficient training, and proper levels of unit coordination. They were adequately supplied, including with reconnaissance data. Their actions were effectively supported by artillery fire and UAV strikes.

On the Bakhmut direction, the Khortytsia OSG has advantages in aerial reconnaissance, more powerful electronic warfare systems, and its artillery actions are significantly more accurate.

The adversary has lost three relatively combat-ready brigades in the Klishchiivka and Andriivka areas and lacks resources to replace them in the respective defense sectors.

In recent days, the adversary’s losses in Zaporizhzhia Oblast have significantly increased. The Russian military command is experiencing a shortage of combat-ready units that can be redeployed to this sector of the front.

The adversary's forces in the Southwestern theater of operations have reached a level of degradation where their grouping is no longer capable of conducting offensive operations and is constrained in defensive actions.

As the forces of the Tavriya OSG progress deeper into the Russian defense in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, they encounter various minefields. These are smaller in scale compared to the primary ones preceding the main defensive line, but they still pose significant challenges in terms of size and density per minefield standards

Change in the line of contact (LoC):

There were 24 combat engagements on various directions.

On the Kupyansk direction , Russian forces continued attacks towards Torske, in the area of Serebryansk Forest, near Bilohorivka and Spirne. Russian aviation destroyed a bridge over the Oskil River in Kupyansk, but the forces of the Khortytsia OSG maintain control over a number of other bridges.

The Khortytsia OSG forces are withdrawing from the southwest of Novoselivske, periodically launching attacks near Kreminna and Torske.

On the Bakhmut direction , battles were ongoing near Klishchiivka, Andriivka, and Kurdyumivka.

The forces of the Khortytsia OSG repelled Russian attacks west of Yahidne, near Klishchiivka and Andriivka.

The enemy launched a counterattack near Kurdyumivka and Klishchiivka.

On the Avdiivka direction , the enemy repelled the Ukrainian assault near Kamyanka and launched unsuccessful attacks in the areas of Keramik and the "Trudovska" mine.

The forces of the Tavriya OSG conducted offensive operations near Opytne and Krasnohorivka, but this did not lead to significant changes on the front line. They repelled 10 Russian assaults near Maryinka.

Berdyansk direction (Velyka Novosilka):  The forces of the Tavriya OSG attacked near Staromayorske, Urozhaine, Novodonetske, and Novomayorske.

Tokmak direction (Robotyne):  The forces of the Tavriya OSG advanced west of Verbove and launched attacks towards Novoprokopivka, near Verbove and Robotyne.

The 429th Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 19th Motorized Rifle Division of the 58th Russian Army defended against the Tavriya OSG attacks near Zherebyanky. The enemy launched unsuccessful attacks near Robotyne.

Kherson direction:  Several reconnaissance groups from the forces of the "Odesa" OSG landed on the left bank of the Dnipro, north of Pidstepne and on Kozatsky Island. They have confidently taken control of the northern part of the island.

In the Black Sea-Azov Sea operational area , there were 8 enemy ships on combat duty, including 1 Kalibr cruise missile carrier, with a total salvo of 8 Kalibr missiles. In the Sea of Azov, there was 1 enemy ship, and in the Mediterranean Sea, there was 1 enemy ship.

The enemy has started withdrawing combat ships from the Crimean naval base.

Change in the enemy's disposition:

Units of the 15th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 2nd Army of the Central Military District of the enemy are deployed near Raigorodka and Nadiya.

The newly formed 40th Army Corps, originating from Stavropol Krai of the Russian Federation, is deploying in the Kherson Oblast and is likely preparing for a defensive operation.

Units of the 83rd Separate Air Assault Brigade of the Russian Airborne Troops, previously defending near Klishchiivka, is presently undergoing regrouping in rear areas. Meanwhile, units of the 31st Separate Air Assault Brigade persist in their defensive efforts near Klishchiivka. In the vicinity of Bakhmut, remnants of the 72nd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade from the 3rd Army Corps of the enemy remain in operation.

"Storm-Z" units have been deployed to bolster the defense and provide cover for the Russian Airborne Troops on the Tokmak direction.

Escalation indicators:

The enemy's command is rotating combat-ready forces in areas where active combat operations are not currently ongoing with newly formed units (the 25th Army on the Kupyansk direction and the 40th Army Corps on the Kherson direction).

Possible operation situation developments:

The enemy command is preparing to launch a large-scale offensive in the Kupyansk direction, with an estimated start date of September 26-27.

Units of the 164th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 25th Army will be deployed in the direction of Dibrova – Serebryansk Forest, and units of the 36th Motorized Rifle Regiment will be deployed west of the Chervonopopivka – Zhytlivka line in the general direction of Novosadove or Terny.

Humanitarian + general:

According to information provided by the MOD's Situation Center, over the past day, Russian forces shelled 9 regions of Ukraine. 142 towns and villages and 104 infrastructure objects were attacked with various types of weapons. There are killed and wounded Ukrainian civilians.

During the night of September 20, 2023, the Russians launched approximately 24 UAVs of the "Shahed-136/131" type. Ukrainian Air defense destroyed 17 "Shaheds". There were several impacts on an oil refinery plant in Poltava Oblast.

As a result of the Russian strike on an evacuation convoy in Kupyansk, Kharkiv Oblast, on September 19, two volunteers, four individuals evacuated from areas of constant shelling, and two servicemen lost their lives. According to law enforcement, the Russians conducted the strike using a modified "Hrom-E1" missile.

Due to mines and explosive hazards in Ukraine, 246 civilians have lost their lives, including 13 children, and 521 individuals have been injured (of which 53 are children), according to Colonel Oleg Shuvarsky, the head of the Mine Action Department at the Main Department of Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety of the Ministry of Defense. The area of contaminated landmines and explosive hazards in Ukraine has increased to 174,000 square kilometers since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion. Over 5 million Ukrainians reside in these areas.

At the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, 822 Ukrainian nuclear workers continue to operate. Another 2083 ZNPP employees are not allowed to their workplaces, stated the President of the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company "Energoatom," Petro Kotin.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, 472 residents of temporarily occupied Crimea have been accused under the article of the Russian Administrative Code regarding the discrediting of the Russian army, the human rights organization "Crimean Process" reported. Over 80% of all cases of discrediting were initiated due to posts on social media or verbal statements by citizens. Most verdicts were issued by courts automatically, directly on the day the protocol was drawn up, in closed sessions and without the presence of observers and the press.
