Wondering how to get from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara? Let me help! I live in Puerto Vallarta and have visited Guadalajara over five times – taking both planes, buses, and cars. In this guide, I’m sharing the best ways to get between the two cities and how to stay safe.

Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco and one of my favorite cities in Mexico! Famed for its mariachi music, tequila, and spectacular colonial architecture, I always discover something new to do each time I visit.

But how do you make the journey from Puerto Vallarta’s coastal charm to the lively streets of Guadalajara? That’s exactly what this post delved into.

Guadalajara is 209 miles (336 km) from Puerto Vallarta, and takes about 4-5 hours to get there by car, or under an hour by plane.

Each mode of transportation has its pros and cons, which I’ll go through in this post.

Overview: Getting from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara

How to get from puerto vallarta to guadalajara, 1. puerto vallarta to guadalajara flights.

The fastest and most convenient way to get from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara is by taking a flight. The journey is approximately one hour.

These airlines below offer non-stop cheap flights between the two cities:

  • Viva Aerobus

Aeromexico also flys there, but you will have to go via Mexico City.

Prices vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, so it’s recommended to check online and compare prices. In the past, I’ve paid around 50 USD one-way.

Searching for flights? I love SkyScanner because it compares multiple airlines to find you the best price!

It’s a scenic flight passing over the Bay of Banderas, the Sierra Madre mountains, and into Guadalajara.

While the flight time is under an hour, you also have to factor in the time it takes to get to and from airports.

You’ll have to arrive at Puerto Vallarta (PVR) airport at least an hour in advance, plus the time to disembark the plane, collect your bags, and get into the city from the Guadalajara airport (GDL).

While Puerto Vallarta’s airport is just a 15-minute drive to downtown and even closer to some hotels on the south beach zone , Guadalajara’s city center is much further.

It’s about 20km/12 miles from the airport to the city center, but traffic here is notoriously awful. It once took me over an hour to to my hotel!

All and all, flying may end up taking three hours or longer.

Driving takes about five hours, so it’s not a huge difference.

There are two routes to drive from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara.

The first is the toll freeway (highway 200/15) which heads up the coast through the state of Nayarit before heading back into Jalisco.

The freeway is the faster route and a good option if you want to visit some beach towns along the coast, such as Sayulita and San Pancho. On the downside, you’ll pay about 650 pesos in tolls (30 USD).

The other route is the old highway (544/70) through the historic town of San Sebastian del Oeste and Mascota. The road is slow and curvy but has spectacular mountain scenery.

There are three pueblos magicos to see along route 70, so this is a good route if you want to turn it into a fun road trip!

If you’re driving, don’t miss the town of Tequila (the birthplace of the famous Mexican drink).

There, you can wander around this historic down, take tours of Tequila factories, see how agave is cut from the fields, and drink Tequila.

However, it’s always wise to follow some essential guidelines for a safe and enjoyable road trip:

  • Keep Your Vehicle in Good Condition: Ensure your rental car is in optimal condition before you embark on the journey. Check tires, brakes, and other essential components.

  • Avoid Unnecessary Stops in Remote Areas: Plan your breaks in well-populated areas or established rest stops.
  • Keep Valuables Out of Sight: As with driving in any unfamiliar area, it’s wise to keep your belongings secured and out of sight – especially while stopped.

How to Get from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara: Your 2024 Guide

Curious about how to get from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara? This guide has you covered and it lays out every possible option for making the journey. The two cities make a great travel pairing and if you’ve been spending a few days/weeks relaxing on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta, there may be a few reasons why you need to travel onwards to Guadalajara. Since the number of domestic and international flights available from Puerto Vallarta airport is limited, you may need to travel to Guadalajara for logistics reasons.

Guadalajara is well worth a couple of days’ exploration in itself. There are plenty of things to do here.

Besides the beautiful architecture, fascinating markets, and historic churches in the city center, the Jalisco capital also makes a great jumping-off point for exploring Tlaquepaque , Tequila , Lake Chapala, and Magdalena.

There is a distance of 334km between Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. Depending on your transport method, this should take between 5 and 5.5 hours overland.

Table of Contents

How to get from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara

tour a puerto vallarta desde guadalajara

There are essentially four different ways to get from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara. You could fly, take the bus, opt to rent a car, or hire a local driver.

Flying is arguably the fastest, most comfortable, and most convenient option. It is also not that much more expensive than taking the bus, particularly when booking your tickets in advance.

The bus is the cheapest option. However, it comes with a relatively long journey time (5-5.5 hours) along bumpy roads. It may also take longer than expected, since the bus will stop to drop off various passengers on the route, and there may be traffic.

Flying from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara

tour a puerto vallarta desde guadalajara

Several domestic airlines offer direct flights from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara. This includes Viva Aerobus, Aeromar, and TAR Aerolineas.

You can also fly indirectly via Mexico City with Volaris and AeroMexico. However, since this adds several hours to your journey and doesn’t really save you anything, there shouldn’t be any reason why you don’t fly direct. You can get flights for as little as $44 USD one-way. This includes a personal item and a carry-on item that doesn’t exceed 10kg in weight. Skyscanner and Expedia are both good platforms to use to review flight prices and book your tickets. If your flight dates are flexible, it might also pay to search for flights across an entire month-long period. You may be surprised to see how much the prices differ from one day to another, and what savings there are to be had.

The flight time is around 45-55 minutes. Even when you factor in the time spent waiting at the airport, and the transit time to and from each airport, flying is still significantly faster than traveling by bus.

Getting to Puerto Vallarta International Airport

Puerto Vallarta’s Licenciado Gustavo Díaz (PVR) is located on the outskirts of the city and it is easy enough to get to whether you are staying in downtown Vallarta, the Romantic Zone, or all the way out in Conchas Chinas. Depending on where you are staying, your hotel may offer a complimentary airport shuttle service. There are also several buses that run from various points around the city to the airport. You can check the various routes via Rutas Vallarta here.

Arguably the most convenient way to get to the airport is to take an Uber in Puerto Vallarta. This is both safer and more cost-effective than hailing a cab or organizing a private transfer in advance.

From the Zona Romantica to the airport, you can expect to pay around 150 pesos. From Conchas Chinas or Nuevo Vallarta, the fare may be between 240-300 pesos depending on the demand and traffic at the time of your journey.

Getting from Guadalajara airport to the city center

Guadalajara Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla airport (GDL) is located 12.4 miles away from the historic center of Guadalajara. The journey should take between 20 and 25 minutes by road, depending on traffic. Guadalajara airport taxis are safe and reliable and there is always an abundance of them waiting outside Arrivals. Uber in Guadalajara is a more cost-effective alternative, and GDL is one of only a few Mexican airports where Ubers are permitted to pick up passengers.

There are currently no buses that depart from the airport to the city. However, if you don’t have a ton of luggage, you can exit the airport, cross the pedestrianized bridge over Carretera Chapala – Guadalajara and walk to the bus stop that travels into town. This walk should take about 15-20 minutes. The buses that depart from here take you to Central Vieja station in Guadalajara and cost between 7-12 pesos depending on the specific bus you ride on. Guadalajara is generally safe for tourists. However, it is arguably best not to try and walk and take the bus if you are arriving in the city late at night. It is also worth noting that the area around Central Vieja is relatively sketchy. So, even if you take the bus into the city, you are still better to take a cab from there to where you are staying in Guadalajara.

On the whole, then, it is simply better to take an Uber directly from the airport. It is likely to cost between 200 and 220 pesos each way.

Taking the bus from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara

Regular buses run from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara, and back from Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta. The journey should take 5.5 hours. However, the bus will make various stops along the way and may take slightly longer. Several different bus companies serve this route and there are hourly departures. Futura, Vallarta Plus, Primera, and Pacifico are all reputable options. There is really no such thing as a bad bus network in Jalisco so you may as well just purchase a seat on whichever bus departs at the most convenient time for you. Primera Plus and ETN are the ¨luxury¨ options and offer additional amenities and comfort for a slightly higher price. (It is usually a difference of just a few pesos so it is worth paying extra). Most buses are air-conditioned with reclining seats and a bathroom onboard. Even the older buses are perfectly comfortable. Some of the more modern and luxurious buses offer complimentary water and snacks, USB charging ports, free wifi, and airplane-style televisions. Check the latest schedules and departures here.

You are fine to just rock up at the bus station and purchase a ticket there and then. Buses are seldom (if ever) full, even at weekends. A ticket costs around 585 pesos ($29) one way. As mentioned, this is not much less than the flight prices (starting from $45), so it is up to you which option you prefer.

Driving from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara independently

Driving in Mexico is not as intimidating as it may sound. It gives you a lot more flexibility and independence during your trip and it can help you to reach off-the-beaten-path beaches and Pueblo Magicos that you may not have been able to reach via public transport.

Collecting your rental car

Several reputable international firms operate in Puerto Vallarta including Sixt, Alamo, and Enterprise Rent-a-Car. You are looking at a daily rental rate here of between $20 and $30 a day including full coverage insurance. Small, independent local firms may offer cheaper rates but generally, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Check past reviews from other travelers before committing to a rental company. Discover Cars is a great tool for finding a vehicle and comparing prices and specs across various providers. It is possible to collect your rental car from Puerto Vallarta airport and from various points around the city. Do keep in mind that one-way rentals often work out a lot more expensive than rentals where you return the vehicle to the same pickup point. So, for instance, if you are planning to rent a car in Puerto Vallarta, drive up to Guadalajara, and leave the vehicle there, you ought to look at the costs. It would be cheaper to do a loop around Jalisco state and return the car to the same place you collected it from, but that all depends on your itinerary.

Driving conditions in Jalisco

There are several gorgeous towns and villages in southwestern Jalisco, close to Puerto Vallarta, that are awkward to get to by bus. If you rent a car, you can stop at the villages of San Sebastian del Oeste, Mascota, and Talpa de Allende en route to Guadalajara. Do keep in mind that the journey does involve driving along some mountain roads and country lanes, some of which, are only wide enough to allow one car to pass at a time. Similarly, some of the roads in the southern part of the state are not well-maintained and have a lot of potholes. If you are not accustomed to driving overseas/in Mexico, this can be intimidating so it is your call whether this is something you are comfortable doing or not. You should avoid driving at night for safety reasons, and also because many roads in Mexico are poorly lit. For safety, opt to drive along the toll roads rather than the free roads. Check the US government travel advisory for any details on road closures or roads to avoid in Jalisco prior to your trip.

Organizing a Private Transfer from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara

tour a puerto vallarta desde guadalajara

You may be able to organize a private driver to take you from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara. However, this is far from being the most economical option, even if you are traveling as a group or a family.

The journey will take 5 hours and is likely to cost between $200 and $300 USD for up to 4-5 people plus luggage. You will need to organize this in advance of your trip with a local transport company. Uber drivers and street taxis are unlikely to accept the fare because of the distance involved and their need to make the return journey.

Wondering how to get from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara? In this article, I’ll cover the main ways to get between the two cities to help you decide which transportation method is best for you.

Guadalajara is the largest city in the Mexican state of Jalisco and a popular destination for those looking to escape the touristy beach towns and learn more about Mexican culture.

The city makes a great base for visiting nearby towns like Tequila, where you can tour local distilleries, and the popular lakeside towns of Ajijic and Chapala.

Whether you’re planning to spend a few days in Guadalajara or just passing through on your way to the airport, this guide will outline the best options for getting there from Puerto Vallarta.

Where is Guadalajara?

Guadalajara is located in the state of Jalisco, on the western side of Mexico. It is situated approximately 280 km (174 miles) from Puerto Vallarta.

The bus trip from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara is advertised as about 4.5 hours, but the actual driving time depends on traffic and road conditions. A flight from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara takes approximately 80 minutes, but of course, you must allow for wait time at the airport before your flight.

Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara buses

The simplest way to get between Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara is by bus. Several companies run buses between these two cities, with multiple departures every day. The ride is slightly twisty in parts but, overall, very scenic. So, if you plan to take the bus to Guadalajara, I’d recommend going during the day to admire the mountains and agave fields along the way!

You’ll depart from the Central de Autobuses in Puerto Vallarta , which is very close to the Puerto Vallarta airport.

Which bus lines run from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara?

The following bus companies run between Vallarta and GDL. They all offer a very similar service, but some are a little more luxurious than others.

  • Primera Plus
  • Vallarta Plus

ETN is the most luxurious of these companies and will have the highest prices. Futura and Primera Plus are pretty comparable in my experience– Primera Plus may be slightly nicer. I haven’t traveled with Pacific or Vallarta Plus, but I think they’re slightly more basic.

I took Primera Plus on my most recent trip, and it was comfortable. Each seat had its own entertainment center and complimentary headphones. There was always free Wi-Fi onboard (though it was pretty slow) and separate restrooms for men and women. The coach was also air-conditioned.

Guadalajara bus stations

Guadalajara has a few different bus stations, and depending on where you’re planning to go in the city, one might make more sense than others. You might also choose your station depending on scheduling.

In most cases, when traveling from Puerto Vallarta, it will make the most sense to choose either Nueva Central or the Zapopan bus station.

I’ve circled them both in pink on the map below:

tour a puerto vallarta desde guadalajara

Nueva Central

La Nueva Central is the main bus station in Guadalajara. Most buses from Puerto Vallarta will give you the option to end your trip here. This a massive station (larger than some airports!) and it’s a hub for most bus companies operating in the western part of Mexico. You can catch buses here to go almost anywhere in Mexico.

La Nueva Central is located southeast of Guadalajara’s Centro Historico and is probably the best choice if you are traveling to Tonala, Tlaquepaque, or the Guadalajara airport because it is situated close to those areas.

From my observation, La Nueva didn’t seem to be located in the best part of town. If possible, I would avoid arriving here late at night.

When I arrived, I was met with an abundance of taxi drivers right outside, which was really overwhelming as they each started jostling for me to get in their cars. I opted to call an Uber instead because I wanted the peace of mind of in-app navigation.

If you’re staying in La Colonia Americana, Centro Historico, Zapopan, or anywhere else on the west side of the city, purchase a ticket to the Zapopan bus station .

It’s a much smaller station on the western edge of Guadalajara. Landing here will save you from having to backtrack across the city from Nueva. (Heads up, traffic can be terrible in Guadalajara).

The smaller size of the Zapopan station makes getting in and out of it much less stressful than the Nueva Central, at least in my opinion. I would choose this station over Nueva any day!

On my recent trip from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara, I took the Primera Plus bus from Vallarta to Central Nueva because I hadn’t bothered to look up the location of either bus station in relation to my hotel. I ended up taking a 30-minute Uber back across town to La Americana. I lived and learned, so you don’t have to!

The main cathedral of Guadalajara sits on the edge of the famous Plaza Guadalajara. Visitors take photos of the attractions in the distance.

How to book bus tickets to Guadalajara

There are several ways to book your bus tickets to Guadalajara.

  • Buy them at the bus terminal : Unless you’re traveling on a busy holiday (such as Día de Muertos or Christmas Eve), booking your bus tickets ahead is probably unnecessary. You can show up at the bus station shortly before departure (I suggest 30 minutes) and buy tickets in person.
  • At a convenience store : If you want to book ahead but don’t feel like venturing all the way to the bus station, head to your local Oxxo, Kiosko, 7/11, or really any convenience store in Puerto Vallarta.

tour a puerto vallarta desde guadalajara

  • Through the bus company website : Once you select a bus company to travel with, head to their website to purchase your ticket online. I bought my bus ticket to Guadalajara directly through the Primera Plus website, and they emailed me the ticket as a QR code. All I had to do was show up and board the bus! If you have any issues with the Primera Plus site (sometimes they reject foreign credit cards), you can also book through GottoGo , a third-party transportation aggregator.
  • Using Busbud : Busbud is a popular transportation aggregator for purchasing tickets online. They charge a small commission on top of the ticket price, but their website is in English, and they take foreign credit cards. This is the best option for anyone who would prefer an English-language site or if you’re having issues getting the bus company site to accept your credit card. Click here to book travel to Guadalajara on Busbud!

Flights from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara

Flying is another option for getting between Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. Both cities have major airports, and you can find multiple flights between them daily.

The Mexican airlines VivaAerobus and Volaris both offer nonstop flights from PVR to GDL. These are both budget airlines. I’ve flown with both several times and always had good experiences. If I had to choose, I’d go with Volaris because the planes (in my experience) are a little newer and more comfortable.

You can often find flights from PVR to GDL on AeroMexico as well, but they have a stopover in Mexico City, making the total travel time over 4 hours. AeroMexico is a great airline, but flying all the way to Mexico City and back feels nonsensical to me!

Naturally, prices vary depending on seasonality and demand. The winter high season or holidays like Semana Santa will likely drive prices up.

tour a puerto vallarta desde guadalajara

I’ve seen prices under $700 MXN for a one-way flight to Guadalajara. That wouldn’t include baggage fees or seat selection, though. Even so, it’s worth comparing flight prices to bus ticket prices, as you may come out ahead.

Flight time from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara is about 55 minutes, but don’t forget to account for time spent waiting at the airport when you calculate total travel time.

I like to use Skyscanner to search for flight prices across the different carriers.

Driving from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara

If you’re the type of traveler who appreciates the independence of having your own set of wheels, you may prefer to drive to Guadalajara. This could be advantageous as Guadalajara is a large, sprawling city and there are several attractions you may wish to visit beyond the city limits as well.

Having your own vehicle will undoubtedly save you time navigating public transportation and give you the freedom and flexibility to check out some harder-to-reach points of interest (such as the Guachimontones archaeological site !)

If you plan to rent a car, Discover Cars is my preferred platform to find the best deals on rental cars in Mexico. They aggregate prices across all the different rental companies so you can compare prices and features to find the best deal. It’s important to read Google reviews of the different companies and make an educated selection, though, because they are not all equal. Unfortunately, the lowest rate doesn’t always mean you’ll get the best service.

The road from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara is pretty straightforward. There are two routes: one uses a toll road (called a cuota ), and the other sticks to the free road (called libre ). The toll route is advisable as the road is better maintained and faster.

The driving time between Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara varies depending on traffic, but generally, it takes 4 to 5 hours to travel on the cuota .

According to TollGuru , the expected cost of tolls from Vallarta to Guadalajara for a standard-sized vehicle (car, SUV, or pickup truck) is about $1,055 MXN.

I’ve included a map of the recommended driving route below for your reference.

Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara travel FAQs

Bus ticket prices vary depending on the bus line you choose, but you can expect to pay about $780 MXN for a one-way ticket on a first-class bus.

How much is a taxi from Puerto Vallarta to Guadalajara?

You could book a private transfer from the Puerto Vallarta airport to Guadalajara for about $275 USD, but I don’t think there’s much point in it. In most cases, it would be more affordable and comfortable to fly.

Is Guadalajara worth going to?

Yes! I do think Guadalajara is worth a visit. It’s a traditional Mexican city with lots of culture and plenty for visitors to experience. You can learn about Mexican and Jalicense history, check out the vibrant arts district of Tlaquepaque, soak up the city’s incredible gastronomy in the Colonia Americana, learn about Tequila production in the nearby pueblo mágico of Tequila, and so much more!

How many days is enough for Guadalajara?

Guadalajara is a large city with a lot to offer curious travelers. I’d recommend at least 3 days to see the highlights, but you could easily spend a week or more.

Vía corta Guadalajara a Puerto Vallarta 2024 ruta casetas ruta casetas
