Nashville, Tennessee is becoming a must-see destination for travelers from all over the world.
While famous for its music and hot chicken, the city offers a ton of great things to do around Christmastime.
If you’re considering coming to Nashville this Christmas season, be sure to check out these 10 things to do to help make your holiday visit merry and bright!
1. Holiday LIGHTS at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens
The Cheekwood Botanical Gardens offer an escape into nature while still in the heart of the city, affording guests the opportunity to walk the beautifully manicured gardens and soak in the history of the Cheekwood mansion turned museum and art gallery.
At Christmastime, Cheekwood becomes a Christmas wonderland at night for groups of friends, families, and lovebirds alike.
In the evenings, you can stroll the gardens and delight in the beautifully ornate Christmas lights decorating the grounds.
In addition, you can feel the Christmas magic through meeting live reindeer, sipping hot chocolate and other wintery treats, roasting s’mores, and seeking out the best selfie spot along your magical stroll.
2. A Country Christmas at the Gaylord Opryland Resort
I know hanging out in a hotel can seem odd if you aren’t staying there, but the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville is a unique place enjoyed by both locals and tourists at Christmastime.
Plus, you can have an enjoyable evening experiencing much of what this hotel has to offer for free, without needing a room key!
Thousands visit each year simply just to wander through the giant indoor atriums and experience their gardens, river, shops, and restaurants all covered in whimsical Christmas lights (over 3 million lights, the hotel touts), trees, and decorations.
The hotel also has a beautiful outdoor life-size nativity scene as well at the main entrance. For a nice date night, I recommend dining at the Old Hickory Steakhouse inside the Delta Atrium if you are in the mood to splurge.
In addition to exploring the Christmas lights, the hotel offers many fun Christmas activities each year, including:
- Romantic carriage and river boat rides
- Ice tube slides
- Christmas concert dinner shows
- Ice skating and ice bumper cars
- Pictures with Santa
- Gingerbread house decorating
3. Historic Downtown Franklin
There are many wonderful small towns on the outskirts of Nashville, but Franklin perhaps tops them all.
Especially at Christmas, walking on Main Street in Franklin’s historic downtown reminds you of the quaint settings of any Hallmark Christmas movie.
Founded in 1799, this historic downtown provides a plethora of small-town shops, restaurants, dessert options, and Civil War history that will make an afternoon of exploring anytime of the year.
However, at Christmas, Main Street comes alive with Christmas lights and a giant Christmas tree in the town square that will really get you into that feel-good Christmas spirit.
Each December, the city of Franklin hosts Dickens of a Christmas , an open-air main street pedestrian-friendly festival and Christmas market with food, artisan vendors, entertainment, music, and fun for the whole family.
Based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol , you’ll feel like you’ve walked into 1800s London and may run into Ebenezer Scrooge himself.
4. Christmas Shows at the Ryman or Grand Ole Opry
A visit to Nashville wouldn’t be complete without attending a Christmas concert at the city’s two most iconic venues.
The Ryman Auditorium is often called the Mother Church of Country Music and sits in the heart of downtown Nashville, next to Broadway and all of Nashville’s famous honky-tonks. The original home of the Grand Ole Opry for many years, the Ryman was initially built as a tabernacle for church revivals and current-day concert goers still sit in pews surrounded by stained glass windows.
The Grand Ole Opry is the more modern home for the longtime country music concert series and is located next to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel as well as all the shops, restaurants and entertainment options that make the Opryland area a tourist haven
5. Lighting of the Green at Lipscomb University
Each December, Lipscomb University hosts its Christmas tree lighting ceremony on campus.
Recent years have included free concerts by Nashville music legend Amy Grant and other friends, as well as the Lipscomb student choirs. Get into the local holiday spirit and up close and personal with Nashville artists and musicians in the process.
6. Nashville’s Holiday Pop-up Bars
Nashville is famous for its rooftop bars and lively lounges throughout the city. These places get into the holiday spirit each year, and yuletide-themed pop-up bars abound.
I personally recommend the heated igloos on the rooftop bar of the Bobby Hotel for a unique experience – be sure to reserve your igloo in advance!
7. Christmas with the Nashville Symphony
Nashville is privileged with a world-class symphony performing concerts throughout the year in the beautiful Schermerhorn Symphony Center, located in the heart of downtown.
At Christmastime, the symphony hosts a variety of holiday-themed performances.
You’ll want to check out their Music City Christmas performance, which is an annual tradition filled with Broadway singers, dancers, and the symphony orchestra.
In addition, the symphony often will show a classic Christmas movie each year and perform its score live while the movie plays on screen, making for a unique way to watch some of your favorite must-see holiday films.
8. Christmas at Nashville’s Historic Homes & Mansions
A city rich in history, Nashville boasts a number of historic homes and mansions. Come December, many of these homes add a festive Christmas flair to their beauty and history, allowing visitors to step back in time to experience what Christmas once was like in these stately homes.
Here are a few homes in the area that really get into the Christmas spirit:
- The Hermitage (President Andrew Jackson’s home)
- Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery
- Belmont Mansion
- Historic Rock Castle
- Oaklands Mansion
9. The Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s Holiday Performances
If you are a big fan of the theater, be sure to check out TPAC’s annual lineup of Christmas plays and performances. The Nutcracker, A Christmas Story, and A Charlie Brown Christmas Live on Stage are some examples of Christmas plays in recent years.
I personally loved A Christmas Story, as the performance is in an intimate setting where the actors engage the audience and even invite some audience participation in part of the show!
With TPAC located downtown, you can make an evening of it eating at one of Nashville’s tasty restaurants in the Germantown or Downtown neighborhoods before your show.
10. Christmas Cruises on the General Jackson Showboat
Each Christmas season, the General Jackson Showboat provides fine dining combined with a Broadway-style Christmas musical production at its Victorian-style theater.
While enjoying the show, you can experience beautiful views of Nashville and a unique slice of history as you cruise down Tennessee’s Cumberland River on a day or evening riverboat cruise.
The boat docks out of Opryland, so you’ll already be close to all this tourist-friendly area has to offer.

12 Things to Do for Christmas in Nashville
By Author Laura Longwell
Posted on Last updated: November 18, 2023
Christmas is a special time to visit Nashville. The city brings out its finest decorations, some of its best performances, and lots and lots of Christmas lights. Whether you’re driving through the biggest light display in Tennessee or checking out a winter pop-up bar, there’s something fun for everyone. We’ve spent three holiday seasons in the city and love finding new things to experience in Nashville at Christmas. Here’s a look at some of our favorites.
Wander under the lights at Cheekwood
One of the highlights of the Christmas season in Nashville is a visit to Cheekwood Lights. The grounds of the 55-acre botanical garden and its historic mansion are transformed with the addition of more than a million colorful lights. From candy canes to glowing arches and unique decorations, the displays are spectacular.
Tours are available of the house, which is decorated for the season. Plus, visitors will find the illuminated children’s garden and a popular model train that makes its way through a lit up landscape. You can also meet a reindeer and enjoy lots of snacks and drinks as you explore the lights at Cheekwood .
Enjoy the events at Gaylord Opryland
Gaylord Opryland is a must do in Nashville during the Christmas season. The sheer variety of options here makes it a good place to go whether you have an adults-only group or you’re looking to entertain kids or teenagers.
The Gaylord complex is practically like an indoor city with lots of restaurants and things to see inside (fair warning: you may get lost). During the holidays, it’s decked out with over three million lights and tons of decorations, so there’s plenty to see for free. There are also opportunities to meet Santa, have brunch with Rudolph, go ice skating, decorate gingerbread, and participate in lots of other activities.
The big attraction, which runs November 10-January 1, is ICE! This year, it is The Polar Express told with massive ice sculptures, slides, tunnels, and other amazing pieces. The 2+ million pounds of ice are kept at 9 degrees, so come ready for a chilly time (parkas are provided).
Have a drink in a rooftop igloo
Ten stories above downtown, the Bobby Hotel’s rooftop lounge is a top place to go at Christmas. Its personal igloos are full of rustic furnishings and cozy blankets. Plus, the rooftop lounge has ice skating, campfires, and lots of seasonal food and drinks. (Note that the igloos require a reservation and a minimum spend.)
See a show at Tennessee Performing Arts Center
For lovers of music and theater, December is a great time to be in Nashville. The schedule at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center is always packed with fun performances.
This year, the annual performance of Nashville’s Nutcracker returns with shows December 8-24. The classic A Christmas Carol runs December 1-17.
Take a holiday tour of Belmont Mansion
Christmas is a festive time at Belmont Mansion which is decorated to the hilt for the season. This tony home was once the summer estate of Adelicia Acklen, the wealthiest woman in Tennessee in the mid-1800s.
Any time of the year, visitors will see the home’s remarkable furnishings, including Roman sculptures, gifts from a US President, and treasures brought back from a Grand Tour of Europe. In the winter, the mansion tour is augmented to include a focus on Victorian Christmas traditions as guests pass through the dining room set for Christmas dinner, the foyer ready for a soiree, and other pretty spaces.
Go wine tasting at Arrington Vineyards
The holidays is a great time to visit Arrington Vineyards just a half-hour from Nashville. The winery offers sweeping views and plenty of space to have family picnics, play games, and enjoy the wines. During the Christmas season, there is live music and lots of decorations, and you’ll often find special offers like chocolate pairings and more.
See Christmas at the Ryman
One of the most popular residencies in Nashville, Amy Grant and Vince Gill perform 12 shows for Christmas at the Ryman during the holiday season. With a musical catalog ranging from O Holy Night to Let It Snow , the musical couple is one of the biggest draws around.
Drive though the Dancing Lights of Christmas
About a half-hour from downtown, the largest drive thru light and music show in Tennessee is hosted at the Wilson County Fairgrounds in Lebanon. Beginning November 10 and lasting through New Year’s Eve, the Dancing Lights of Christmas features lights synchronized to a special radio station playing lots of Christmas favorites. From dancing snowmen to spinning ornaments, the nightly show is a must-see for lovers of lights.
Admission to the light show also includes the sites of Santa’s Village and a petting zoo. Weekends here can get busy beyond belief, so plan to visit during the week, if possible.
Enjoy the Metro Christmas tree
The Metro Nashville Christmas tree at Public Square Park is synonymous with the city during the holidays. In an annual tradition, a massive Norway Spruce is covered with over 5000 LED lights ahead of its stint on display downtown.
The annual lighting ceremony is a popular Nashville Christmas event with choir performances and an appearance by Santa. Local food trucks ensure there is plenty of delicious food for attendees to enjoy.
Take a ride on the North Pole Express
One of the highlights of Christmas in Nashville is the North Pole Express Train Ride. This two-hour round trip from Nashville to Lebanon is filled with lovely scenery and accompanied by Victorian Carolers and visits from Santa and his elves.
The restored classic train, which is decorated for the season, leaves from the Tennessee Central Railway Museum . Hot chocolate and other holiday treats are available along the ride, which makes a delightful outing whether you’re looking for something fun to do with the whole family or a romantic date idea .
Experience the FrankTown Festival of Lights
Thousands of lights greet visitors to the drive thru FrankTown Festival of Lights . The 1.5-mile-long route features figures from Christmas stories, carols, cartoons, and more all synchronized to a music on a local radio station. The display at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center in Franklin runs nightly from November 17 through New Years Eve.
Enjoy the festivities in Franklin
Just south of Nashville, the city of Franklin has a long list of its own festivities to enjoy. Its historic main street is charmingly adorned with garland, ornaments, and lights. The town square features a Christmas tree, which is lit in a music-filled ceremony . The city also hosts a festival with food, craftspeople, and entertainment called Dickens of a Christmas, among other special events.

April 28, 2023 // by Southern Trippers
Welcome to Christmas in Nashville, where the festivities are just as bright and lively as the city’s music. Nashville offers many memorable and merry experiences during the season. From Santa’s pub to Christmas parades, and classic lights, there is never a dull moment and there are so many things to do in Nashville!
Factor in that Nashville has great weather during this time of the year! Watch the leaves turn and enjoy the crisp air inside the city as things come to life. So go ahead– put on your favorite country song, an ugly Christmas sweater, and see what Nashville during Christmas is like.
Is Christmas a Good Time to Visit Nashville TN?
The short answer? Yes! Nashville is particularly popular during the Christmas season, and right around New Years too. Things like the Cheekwood Estate and Gardens that put up Christmas lights ensure that this is a magical time to visit.
While compared to the high season of April through October, December is a little less busy for Nashville. However, this should not deter from what the city has to offer!
With cooler weather, cheaper flights, and cheaper hotels during the off-season rates, you gotta check it out! Combine this with the Nashville holiday events and you will be set this season!
Nashville Weather in December
The weather in Nashville in December will be cool, there is no denying that. Daily high temperatures decrease by 6 degrees Fahrenheit. This means they drop from an average of 55 degrees Fahrenheit a day, to 49 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, it rarely falls below 33 degrees Fahrenheit here during this off-season. The sky is often clouded, or at least partially cloudy during this month as well.
And the chances of rain decrease during December from 29% to 25%. The chance of a day with mixed snow or rain is possible, but not super common. Pack right!

Christmas time in Nashville is magical, there is no denying that. But is it crowded? Yes and no.
While this is the “off-season” the crowds do tend to expand the closer we get to the holidays. In fact, if you want to be there during New Years in particular, you should book way in advance!
But during early December, the crowds are quiet and slow. As the city brings out its finest decorations, performances, and Christmas lives, the city comes alive and brings along more guests. Either way, Nashville in winter is a must check out!

Holidays at Historic Homes
The holiday season is a great time to visit one of Middle Tennessee’s many historic homes. Most of you know that I drag my kids to tour old houses everywhere I go! There are so many interesting things to see and learn. I never get tired of it. During the holidays, most of these historic homes put up lavish decorations.
This is basically my favorite thing ever. I get all kinds of ideas to decorate my own home and, at the same time, I get the kids out of the house for an afternoon during their (far too long) school break. If you have out of town guests, definitely put a couple of these tours on your agenda. Another plus is that these tours are rarely crowded so they are a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of other holiday attractions.

Christmas Movies
For my family, Christmas movies are a big part of the holiday season. It’s one of the few times of the year that we all have some time off to spend together. Many local theaters are showing some of those perennial holiday and Christmas classics on the big screen this season. So make some plans to start a new holiday tradition that involves zero hustle and bustle and lots of popcorn and relaxation! Cut Your Own Christmas Tree for Five Dollars ($5)
I learned something new; you can get a permit to cut down your own Christmas tree in select national forests. Not only do you get a wonderful family experience, you are increasing the health of the forest by thinning out densely populated stands of small-diameter trees.
Christmas Tree Lots
Here’s a list of places to buy your live tree right in your local area. No ‘over the river and through the woods’ required!
Things to do in November
For those of you that are not ready for Santa, there are lots of things going on in November that do not include the Jolly Old Elf.

Christmas Things to do in Nashville
Last Updated on January 31, 2024 by Tori Mitchell
Nashville might be known for its music, but there is so much more that this city has to offer! There are so many Christmas things to do in Nashville, that you will have to start planning a trip here immediately. Or, if you already live in the area, start booking up your December weekends with these fun activities!
This post may contain affiliate links for activities, destinations and products that I love, and think you will too!
Why visit Nashville for Christmas?
There is a super wide variety of Christmas things to do in Nashville, so there is something for everyone. Want to make the holidays filled with lights and live music? Great! Hate country music? That’s okay too, there’s so much else to do. Have kids? Don’t worry, there’s activities they’ll love.
The weather is cold without being that below-freezing miserable type of cold. The middle of the day actually warms up to be super enjoyable during the holiday season! So, book a flight and get to Music City for Christmas!
How to get there?
Driving to Nashville is pretty easy for many on the East Coast as it is pretty centrally located. The drive is under 8 hours from many major cities!
Otherwise, fly into Nashville International Airport which services 26 passenger airlines and over 500 daily flights. All that to say, it’s pretty easy to fly to Nashville! Once you arrive, the airport is only about 15 minutes outside the city, a quick Uber ride or you can rent a car.
Where to Stay in Nashville During Christmas Time?
There’s tons of great hotels in Nashville to choose from, but I have a few personal favorites. If you’re visiting during the month of December, I would recommend that you stay at the Bobby Hotel. It’s located right in downtown, so it is within walking distance to many of the best Christmas things to do in Nashville.
But the best part is the rooftop bar that turns festive during December. The whole place becomes a 70’s inspired winter wonderland complete with igloos, campfires, holiday-inspired cocktails and an ice skating rink. Yes, an ice skating rink on the roof. This is one of the best Christmas things to do in Nashville, and can be right on top of your hotel room if you book at the Bobby Hotel.

Gaylord Hotel
My all time favorite Christmas thing to do in Nashville is to visit the Gaylord Opryland Hotel for their massive holiday celebration and lights display. If you’ve never visited a Gaylord Hotel before, no matter the time of year, then you are sure in for a treat. The hotels are known for their atriums in the center of the hotels that are filled with plants, flowers, gorgeous décor, activities and restaurants. It’s an entire little town inside the middle of these hotels.
The Gaylord Opryland specifically has a river that runs through the atrium and you can actually take a boat ride around. It’s quite remarkable. The restaurants range from casual cafes, sports bars to fine dining.
But a visit to the Gaylord Opryland during Christmas is an entirely elevated experience. The whole atrium is decorated from top to bottom in Christmas lights and decor. The huge water fountain runs continuous holiday-themed shows. Bars are set up around the building for holiday themed drinks like hot cocoa and apple cider. And the Christmas music is on repeat.
Wander outside to the front of the hotel where they have even more lights, gigantic trees, and a nativity display that reads the story of the birth of Jesus on repeat. You can opt to jump on a horse drawn carriage to view the lights in style, for an added fee, and requires reservations.
Head to the back of the hotel for the bulk of the activities. They have multiple ice rinks, a sledding slide, and many other activities for kids and adults to enjoy. It’s like a mini amusement park, there’s seriously so much going on here!
Visiting the Gaylord Opryland is free on select days and times, however in 2021 they started requiring that you purchase one of the add-on tickets to enter during peak times. That usually meant during the evening on weekends, and on select days right around Christmas.
But don’t worry, If you don’t want to do any of the activities, and would just like to explore the grounds then you can just buy one ticket to the cheapest activity. Even the security guards were suggesting this trick, so I think it’s fair for me to share!
Want to really get the full experience at the Gaylord Opryland? Stay here instead and book a room that looks out over the gorgeous atrium. It is a completely unique hotel experience! Wherever you stay, make sure you visit the Gaylord Opryland as it is one of the best Christmas things to do in Nashville and makes for a super fun date night in Nashville too!
Christmas Shows at the Ryman and Grand Ole Opry
Want a Christmas thing to do in Nashville that fully embraces all that Music City is known for? Buy tickets to one of the Christmas shows at the best Nashville music venues while you’re here! Two of the best places to hear live music in town are the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry.
The Ryman offers a variety of Christmas music shows leading up to Christmas day. In addition, you can see The Nutcracker performed here.
At the Grand Ole Opry, you can see the Opry Country Christmas show at one of their several showings. Or, if you prefer to see their regular Opry show then you can see that throughout the holiday season as well.
Pop-up Bars
For adults visiting Nashville, you’ll adore all of the holiday themed pop-up bars that show up around town this time of year. Would it even be a list of Christmas things to do in Nashville if I didn’t tell you where you could get a spiked apple cider?
These bars are a variety of indoor and outdoor locations with tons of fun holiday themes. They are all super different, but three things are constant. First, the decor is over the top. They go all out on these bars to really put you in the holiday spirit. Talk about insta-worthy photos.
Second, they all have delicious, strong and holiday inspired drinks. Sure, you can get a vodka soda, but that’s no fun. Try a hot cocoa with Baileys or Mulled Wine.
Finally, they almost always are hard to get into. Meaning, you either need a reservation (sometimes weeks in advance) or you have to get there early if you want to get in. On a Friday or Saturday that means getting there as early as 4 or 5pm!! These spots are hot commodities so make sure you don’t miss out.
If you are behind in the game, didn’t make a reservation and don’t want to head out that early, then try visiting the Bobby Hotel rooftop called Camp Bobby (mentioned above). It’s definitely popular, but from our experience it was easier to get into at the last minute when we were not prepared.
The bars in Nashville are already super fun, but when they get decked out in holiday décor it’s even better!
General Jackson Showboat
The General Jackson Showboat is a fun experience year round, but is especially fun during the holidays. It’s an incredible experience enjoying a gourmet meal, watching the band perform on stage and riding down the Cumberland River. The river runs through downtown Nashville, so you’ll get picture perfect views of the city skyline from the deck of the boat. The food really is delicious and the performers are talented and a lot of fun.
Throughout the entire month of December, literally almost every day, they run their special Christmas Cruise. They offer lunch time and dinner options at different price points. Want the ultimate experience? Book the New Year’s Eve cruise and count down to the New Year from the boat with the fireworks going off over the city and balloons dropping over the dance floor. We did this to ring in 2022 and it was the best New Year’s Eve experience we’ve ever had!
Holiday Lights Experience at Cheekwood
Cheekwood is an estate and gardens located just outside the city. The property is large and filled with history! During the holiday season, they hold their Holiday Lights Experience and decorate the property with one million lights that dance to the holiday music.
While you’re here, wander the property with hot chocolate in hand, visit the live reindeer, or roast a s’more over one of the fire pits. The mansion is decorated with over 500 poinsettias and they have special holiday art exhibits as well. It’s another one of the best Christmas things to do in Nashville with kids, but is a magical experience for adults too.
North Pole Express Train
The Tennessee Central Railway Museum offers a train ride to the North Pole on select Saturdays throughout the holiday season, beginning as early as mid-November! The ride is 2.5 hours long and they have a 9am and 2:30pm option each day. You’ll get to meet Santa and his elves and food is available for purchase. But, these tickets sell out fast, so buy them early!
Not the cheapest experience on the list, but definitely a must do for families. Your kids will never forget the time they rode to the North Pole to see Santa!
Nashville’s Nutcracker
The Nashville Ballet is best experienced during the Christmas season when they perform Nashville’s Nutcracker. I don’t think there’s anything more traditional that you can do during Christmas time than to see the Nutcracker, and you don’t even have to go to NYC to enjoy the show!
With 15 performance dates and times, you’ll definitely be able to fit this into your schedule of Christmas things to do in Nashville.
East Nashville Holiday Market
Looking for handcrafted holiday décor? Maybe you need some Christmas gifts. Or, if you’re like me you just love a good market, even if there’s nothing you need. Support the local Nashville community and visit the East Nashville Holiday Market! This doesn’t run throughout the entire holiday season, so check the dates and see if you can make it!
Arrington Vineyards
While many of the Christmas things to do in Nashville on this list are extremely Christmas themed, this one is a little more subtle. Arrington Vineyards is the best spot in Nashville for wine drinkers, and is located just 30 minutes outside of the city. They decorate the property for the holidays and often hold a holiday event this time of year, so check the event calendar! The property is huge, and during the winter it’s not packed so you can have more space for you and your friends or family.
Visit the vineyard for a tasting and be sure to bring your best charcuterie board and blankets with you. It’s my family’s favorite thing to do when they visit and the winter is no exception.
Another plus, the vineyard is close to many of the best hikes in Nashville . So you could spend the morning hiking and then relax afterwards at the vineyard, a perfect day if you ask me!
I hope you have the most magical and festive Christmas in Nashville. I know we sure do!

November 10th, 2023 – January 1st, 2024
Christmas in Nashville wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Gaylord Opryland’s Christmas Festivities. There are more than 3 million brilliant Christmas lights and sparkling decorations all over the resort property, both indoors and outdoors.
The festivities begin midway through November and continue until January 1st, so there’s lots of time to plan your trip. There are numerous exciting events and activities that appeal to kids, families, and people of all ages.
Indoor and Outdoor Christmas Lights
When I visited Gaylord Opryland Resort, I checked out the indoor lighting displays as well as the outdoor nativity scene. If you’re interested in visiting just for the Christmas lights and decorations, it’s free to walk around the property.
In true Nashville style, the indoor Christmas decorations go beyond candy canes and poinsettias. There are music notes, treble clefs, and guitars that showcase the theme of “Music City”. Of course, you’ll still find holiday favorites like nutcrackers, wreaths, and strings of lights suspended from the ceiling.
I really enjoyed wandering around the tropical garden with its fountains, bridges over an indoor river, and palm trees all decorated with Christmas lights. It’s a feast for the senses and among the Christmas events in Nashville that aren’t to be missed.
If that wasn’t enough, the outdoor scene is equally as magical. There’s a gigantic Christmas tree created out of thousands of lights, along with a nativity scene with animals, angels, and Biblical characters. With both indoor and outdoor displays, it’s one of the grandest ways to celebrate Christmas in Nashville.
ICE! Featuring the Polar Express
ICE! Featuring the Polar Express is the signature attraction at Gaylord Opryland. This magical event brings the holiday film, The Polar Express, to live through magnificent hand-carved ice sculptures. These sculptures are created from over 2 million pounds of ice.
It’s a completely immersive Christmas event in Nashville where you’ll walk through dazzling tunnels and glide down frozen slides. There are nine story-driven scenes in total and it’s fun for visitors of all ages. It’s all part of A Country Christmas at Gaylord Opryland. Book your tickets here before it sells out.
More Holiday Events at Gaylord Opryland
Beyond the Christmas decorations, Gaylord Opryland has a variety of holiday events and activities. There’s ice tubing, ice skating, gingerbread house decorating, a Delta riverboat cruise, photos with Santa, Christmas fountain shows, and more. Book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
Please note that it costs $35 to park your car in the self-parking section, regardless of whether you’re an overnight hotel guest or only staying for a couple of hours. This place really makes Christmas in Nashville so magical!

Where to Stay in Nashville
It really doesn’t get any better than this. The SoBro Guest House is truly a home away from home. Feeling more like a boutique apartment than a hotel, the SoBro Guest House combines the best of both worlds. This hotel/apartment is the best place to spend a Nashville weekend or 3 days in Nashville.
Much like an apartment, you have the comforts of home. Enjoy a full kitchen with everything you could imagine to prepare delicious meals, including local coffee beans and a French press for that morning boost. There’s a separate bedroom, a spacious bathroom, and a cozy living space.
The location of SoBro Guest House can’t be beat. Right in the middle of downtown, I could walk all over town to restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. It’s only three blocks away from the Lower Broad Entertainment District and several local hot spots.

What's more, you can test out your own pipes at the recording studio (subject to availability). The Ryman is also a featured stop on many of the city's top guided tours .

U.S. News Insider Tip: Check the calendar for Songwriter Sessions (typically on Saturdays) in the Ford Theater, for a glimpse into the songwriting process. – Rachael Hood, Senior Editor
Music and history lovers can mix and mingle over the exhibits found at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Peruse the plaques dedicated to country music's finest – from Patsy Cline to Reba McEntire to Alan Jackson – and walk among artifacts like Johnny Cash's guitar and Elvis Presley's "solid gold" Cadillac limo. For an interactive history lesson on the roots and evolution of country music, take a self-guided walk through the "Sing Me Back Home: A Journey Through Country Music" exhibit. In addition to its permanent exhibit, the museum hosts various revolving temporary exhibits, which often focus on particular artists. Stop to browse the two-story wall plastered gold and platinum country records, and then head to Historic RCA Studio B . One of the world's most influential recording studios and a Music Row landmark, Studio B produced more than 35,000 songs by legends like Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings and Roy Orbison. (Note: Studio B is about 1.5 miles southwest of the museum.)

U.S. News Insider Tip: Bar hop among the different Broadway bars to hear some of the most talented singers in the city. Bring some cash to tip the musicians and request your favorite country songs. – Erin Evans, Managing Editor
While many people visit Nashville to soak up the history of country music at the city's museums (like the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum ), others prefer enjoying the tunes in person. The best way to do that is to visit Broadway, downtown Nashville's main thoroughfare. Lower Broadway is nicknamed the "Honky Tonk Highway" because of the numerous spots that host live acts daily. What's more, there's no cover charge to the establishments, so you can bar hop as you please.
National Museum of African American Music National Museum of African American Music
The city of Nashville embodies more than just country music, and nowhere is this more apparent than at the National Museum of African American Music. Opened in 2021, the museum aims to educate visitors on the influence of African American people on more than 50 genres of popular music, including jazz, gospel and hip-hop.
Each of the museum's galleries focuses on how African American music changed through specific time periods. The "Wade in the Water" gallery highlights the call-and-response spirituals of the 1600s, while the "Crossroads" gallery showcases the emergence of blues music. The "A Love Supreme" gallery teaches museumgoers about the musical traditions of New Orleans and the emergence of the music now known as jazz, and the "One Nation Under a Groove" gallery details the emergence of R&B starting in the 1940s and chronicles music popularized by the civil rights era. Finally, "The Message" gallery offers a detailed look into hip-hop, rap and youth culture up until the present day. Interactive elements and musical artifacts like sheet music and costumes add to the informative displays. Recent visitors came away deeply impressed with everything from the comprehensive history presented to entertaining interactive exhibits.
Tootsie's Orchid Lounge Tootsie's Orchid Lounge
After a day exploring the roots of the "Country Music Capital of the World," why not experience the sounds of Music City first-hand? If you're looking for a fun atmosphere with top-notch performances, Tootsie's "World Famous" Orchid Lounge on Broadway is the place to go. Since the days when the Grand Ole Opry called the Ryman Auditorium home, this downtown bar has been featuring performances by both world-renowned and up-and-coming artists. Indeed, the place abounds in country music history: part of the Loretta Lynn biopic "A Coal Miner’s Daughter" was filmed here, and legend has it that Willie Nelson got his first songwriting job after performing at Tootsie's.
Patrons have mixed opinions about Tootsie's with some complaining about average food, expensive drinks, and musicians assertively soliciting tips, while others say the multiple floors of first-rate music make up for the woes. Though some travelers bemoan the bar's cramped atmosphere, many believe it's part of the Tootsie's experience.

Nelson's Green Brier Distillery Nelson's Green Brier Distillery
Fans of Tennessee whiskey and bourbon should make time for a stop at Nelson's Green Brier Distillery during their visit to Nashville. The distillery's roots reach back to the late 1800s, when Charles Nelson, a German immigrant, started producing whiskey in Greenbrier, Tennessee. It became so popular he ended up selling about 2 million bottles of whiskey in 1885 alone. Nelson was one of the first distillery owners to sell whiskey in bottles rather than more cumbersome jugs or barrels, which allowed him to achieve wide-spread distribution. He died in 1891 and his wife Louisa took over, though in 1909, Tennessee’s statewide Prohibition forced her to shutter the operation. Nearly 100 years later, the couple's great-great-great-grandsons, brothers Andy and Charlie Nelson, restored the business and brought the operation to Nashville. Today, the venue features the distillery, a tasting room, an event space and a gift and bottle shop. Tours of the distillery run on weekends.
Past travelers called the tasting fun and informational. Others said to sign up for a tour. Visitors said the friendly staff members were particularly knowledgeable and all the whiskey samples were excellent.

Belmont Mansion Belmont Mansion
If you love history or art, make time for a tour of Belmont Mansion – the largest house museum in Nashville. This Italian-style villa was constructed in the 1850s for Adelicia Acklen, one of the wealthiest women in the country at the time and, according to some, Nashville's own Scarlett O'Hara. Although it was originally built to be a summer home, the mansion was quite stately and featured an art gallery, a bowling alley, a zoo and gardens. A tour of the approximately 20,000-square-foot mansion leads visitors through rooms ornately decorated with 19th-century antiques and lavish art.
Visitors praise the nicely preserved interior and knowledgeable docents stationed throughout the mansion. However, some visitors felt their guides did not spend enough time acknowledging the backbreaking work of the property's enslaved workers, who, along with European immigrant servants, built and maintained this opulent mansion. Unfortunately, many physical remnants of the enslaved people at Belmont Mansion were destroyed over the course of history, but you can still learn some information about some of the property's enslaved families on the Belmont Mansion website .
The Parthenon The Parthenon
Nashville is a city of many nicknames and most of them have to do with music. Still, the city is also known as the "Athens of the South" thanks to the numerous higher education institutions established there. This identity is reinforced with the Parthenon, a full-scale replica of the one found in Athens . Although Nashville's Parthenon was only meant to be temporary – it was built for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition in 1897 – it has since become a beloved attraction, housing models of the statues found in the original structure as well as an impressive art collection. Travelers praise the well-kept grounds, peaceful atmosphere and magnificent building, recommending an evening visit to see it illuminated. Others rave about the fascinating exhibits and love the giant statue of Athena.
Located in Centennial Park about 2 miles west of Music Row , the Parthenon is open every day, though hours can vary by the week and the season. Check its website before you visit for current hours. Admission costs $10 for adults and $8 for seniors (older than 62) and children ages 4 to 17. However, you can tour the exterior of the building and its grounds for free.

It was constructed to connect downtown Nashville to the suburbs of East Nashville. Designed by Howard M. Jones, the chief office engineer of the Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway, the bridge contains 48 spans, including four steel trusses and two reinforced concrete trusses. They're the only concrete trusses to be known of in Tennessee. In 1998, the city stopped allowing vehicles on the bridge due to its poor condition, and in 2003 it was restored and became a pedestrian-only walkway. There is also 15-foot-wide central bike lane in the middle of the bridge. Pedestrians can stop and relax at one of four overlooks along the bridge, which offer panoramic views of Nashville to the north and south.

Total solar eclipse 2024: What to know about the Great American Eclipse in Tennessee
Time to start preparing for the April 2024 solar eclips e which will pass over our neighbor state Arkansas.
On Monday, April 8, there will be a total solar eclipse passing through the country, and the path of totality is only a few hours from Memphis, Tennessee's closest major city. During the eclipse, the sun will be entirely covered by the moon turning the skies dark in the middle of the day.
While Tennessee is right outside the path of totality, we will still experience a partial solar eclipse with the moon covering up to 95% of the sun.
Here's what to know about the total solar eclipse in April.
What time will the solar eclipse be on April 8, 2024?
While Memphis is not in the path of totality for the 2024 solar eclipse, it is the closest major Tennessee city near the path. In Little Rock, Arkansas, the total eclipse is predicted to start at 12:33 p.m. and end at 3:11 p.m., with totality (when the moon completely blocks out the sun, starting at 1:51 p.m. and ending at 1:54 p.m.
The entire state will experience varying degrees of a partial solar eclipse. Memphis, the closest, is predicted to get a 95% partial solar eclipse. Nashville will get a 90% partial solar eclipse, and Knoxville will get an 85% partial solar eclipse.
While the times for West Tennessee may not be exactly the same as Little Rock, they will be close. Use these times as a guideline for when to get those solar eclipse glasses out and check out the sun.
Where is the best place to see the 2024 solar eclipse? The path of totality
The path of the solar eclipse this year goes south to north. In the U.S., the first major city the eclipse hits is Dallas, Texas. From there it continues through the bottom corner of Oklahoma, through central Arkansas, southern Missouri, western Kentucky, southern Illinois, central Indiana, northern Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania, northern New York, northern Vermont, northern New Hampshire and central Maine.
Both Jonesboro and Little Rock, Arkansas will be in the path of totality during the eclipse. These are the two locations closest to Memphis.
Why is the 2024 solar eclipse special?
During the 2024 solar eclipse, the moon will be closer to Earth than it was during the 2017 solar eclipse. This will make it appear larger in the sky. The path of totality runs through a majority of the country which is also rare.
According to NASA, a visible total solar eclipse happens only once every hundred years or so for a majority of the planet. For certain locations, they can occur a few years apart. Total eclipses happen often enough, but as they occur in various locations around the globe, not all are visible.
When is the next solar eclipse after 2024?
Technically speaking, the next time the moon passes in front of the sun will be in 2026. The catch is that it won't be visible in the U.S. It will be visible from Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean and Spain.
The next total solar eclipse in the U.S. will happen in 2044 in North Dakota and Montana. After that, there will be one in 2045 that passes from California to Florida.
What happens during a solar eclipse?
During a solar eclipse, the moon passes between the sun and Earth. This is what creates the darkness of the eclipse as the moon interrupts the sun's light. People located in the path of totality will experience a complete block of the sun for the few minutes it happens. For people located outside but near the path of totality, they will experience a partial solar eclipse. This is when the moon only covers part of the sun.
What do I need for a total solar eclipse?
Viewers of the solar eclipse, whether total or partial, should take measures to protect their eyes from the sun's harsh light. NASA strongly urges viewers to not use a camera lens, binoculars or a telescope to view the solar eclipse as it can cause severe eye injury.
To look at the eclipse during the partial phases, you must have safe solar viewing glasses. These are not regular sunglasses. No matter how dark the sunglasses are, they are not safe for solar eclipse viewing. NASA has a compiled list of organizations and sellers they recommend purchasing solar glasses from.
Those in the path of totality will have to wear eclipse glasses for most of the duration but will be able to take them off during the brief period of totality, when the sun is completely covered.

Christmas towns are chock-full of all the things we've come to associate with the holiday season. But what makes some villages the absolute best? Some of the Christmas towns on our list exude Old World charm, with German markets, centuries-old traditions or a focus on the history of Christmas , while others feature huge, kitschy Christmas shops and even a giant Santa statue and are perfect for a Christmas getaway . Many are located in regions that get a lot of snow—but some southern locales also made our list. So no matter where you're located, there's a "Christmas village near me" to find.

How we chose the best Christmas towns in the USA
Many of these towns have gained a reputation for going all out for Christmas, so our reporting included recommendations and ratings from travel experts and real travelers, including our own personal experience. Without further ado, these are the best Christmas towns in the USA, from coast to coast.
Mystic, Connecticut
Best for: Boat lovers
The historic seaport of Mystic isn't just a summer destination—it's an exciting place to spend "Christmas in Connecticut" (if you didn't catch the reference, the classic flick is one of the best romantic Christmas movies ). See the Holiday Lighted Boat Parade, in which vessels get decked out for the holidays and parade down the Mystic River. There's also a Santa Paddle, with Santas on paddle boards, and Santa arriving via tugboat. The Mystic Seaport Museum offers a "holiday bake" workshop of traditional New England treats, a community carol sing and a self-guided tour of their Lantern Light Village, where you can enjoy Christmas light displays, live holiday music, carriage rides and a visit to St. Nick. Meanwhile, the shops and restaurants of Olde Mistick Village will be decorated with more than half a million lights in the Holiday Lights Spectacular, the largest light display in southern New England.
The family-owned—and family-friendly— Taber Inn and Suites stands out among the many B&Bs and inns of Mystic. Set in 12 buildings over two acres, the inn is conveniently located near all the village's attractions and features the only indoor pool in downtown Mystic.
Bardstown, Kentucky
Best for: Bourbon lovers
Nicknamed "the most beautiful small town in America," this old stagecoach stop gets into the holiday spirit with southern-style hospitality and Christmas traditions . Light Up Bardstown starts the season with the illumination of Main Street and the town Christmas tree, along with "Christmas Corner," which has hot cocoa, cookies, balloons and face painting for kids. Throughout December, visit My Old Kentucky Home, an 1818 mansion said to have inspired the classic song, to see it decked out for the holidays. Costumed performers sing the song as you view decorated rooms from Colonial times to the Victorian era to the 1920s. In addition, the town hosts a parade, a "North Pole Express" train ride and a candlelit Christmas Tour of Homes. Seasonal events at the area's bourbon distilleries add grown-up celebrations to Bardstown's many holiday happenings.
Step back in time with a stay at the Jailer's Inn Bed and Breakfast, a circa-1819 jail-turned-hotel centrally located in downtown Bardstown. You can also take tours of the old cells—and even stay in one!—although most of the guest rooms are modern and comfortable.
Santa Claus, Indiana
Best for: Santa kitsch
Santa Claus is one of the most well-known symbols of Christmas . So it's no wonder that each December, the post office of this St. Nick–themed town receives 400,000 pieces of mail (compared with the usual 13,000 monthly) to be canceled with a special holiday picture postmark. But its post office isn't the only thing "America's Christmas Hometown" is famous for: live reindeer, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, light displays, live music and entertainment, and of course, the man himself are all part of the celebrations throughout the season. And no visit to Santa Claus would be complete without stops at Santa's Candy Castle and the Santa Claus Museum and Village.
Chain hotels abound in the area, but for a touch of local Christmas charm, stay at the holiday-themed Santa's Lodge right in town. Set on a lovely property overlooking a lake, the hotel features a rustic, vault-ceilinged lobby that's decorated for Christmas year-round.
Andalusia, Alabama
Best for: Free events
Who says you can't have a white Christmas in Alabama? This small city with a name like a fairy-tale country is a great place for a mini vacation in the winter. It transforms its main square to "Christmas in Candyland," complete with snow-making machines to create a blizzard-like show of flurries each day. We consider Andalusia one of the best Christmas towns in the USA for the additional attractions, from snow tubing and outdoor ice-skating to play cottages and light shows (not to mention the train rides, an inflatable "Arctic" maze, music, hot chocolate, and of course, visits with Santa). Best yet? Most activities are totally free.
Located just minutes from the town square, the Best Western Andalusia Inn offers comfortable accommodations and reasonable prices for your holiday trip. It's also right next door to Dean's Cake House, a local bakery noted for its delicious seven-layer cakes.
Branson, Missouri
Best for: Live music shows
Judy Garland might have sung "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" in the classic holiday flick Meet Me in St. Louis (side note: Judy's original version definitely belongs on your holiday playlist ), but that city may be outdone by another Missouri town at Christmastime. The tourist hot spot of Branson, "America's Christmas Tree City," celebrates all season long with the live music shows the town is known for, plus light displays, parades and Branson Scenic Railway's Polar Express Train Ride through the Ozark Mountains, departing from the town's 1905 train depot. The 1880s-themed park, Silver Dollar City, also gets the holiday treatment for An Old Time Christmas festival. Plus, we can't forget about the various Christmas shows, including Dolly Parton's Stampede at the Dolly Parton's Stampede Theater and the Hamners' Unbelievable Magic Variety Show at Hamners' Variety Theater.
The comfortable Lodge of the Ozarks is in a prime location on Branson's "76 Strip," near many of the live entertainment, music and theater venues the town has to offer. Rustic-themed decor, an indoor pool and a great breakfast add to the hotel's appeal.
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Best for: The top Christkindlmarkt
Nicknamed "Christmas City," the official moniker for this town was designated as Bethlehem on Christmas Eve 1741. At the town's famous Christkindlmarkt, which features unique artisans, music, crafts, food and handmade gifts from Germany, you'll find the best Christmas gifts for everyone on your list. But even beyond the awesome shopping, the town overflows with Christmas spirit. Take a Bethlehem by Night bus tour, carriage ride or walking Christmas Stroll; enjoy a wassail party, a concert or a stage show; and see the decorated Trees of Historic Bethlehem, set among five historic sites.
Stay at the restored 1922 Historic Hotel Bethlehem in the town's historic district for easy walkability to many holiday events. The well-appointed hotel actually sits on the site where the early settlers named the town on Christmas Eve all those years ago; a mural painted in 1937 on a hotel wall depicts the event, as well as more town history.
Solvang, California
Best for: A hygge-inspired holiday
Visiting this captivating Christmas town north of Santa Barbara at holiday time will have you thinking you've been transported to the Old World. Founded by settlers from Denmark, the village features architecture (including a windmill!), restaurants and goodies that are distinctively Danish—not to mention that warm and cozy sensibility the Danish call " hygge ," one of the top Christmas traditions to steal from around the world . In December, Solvang goes all out for its Julefest, featuring downtown candlelit caroling tours, Santa's village, a parade and tree lighting. The festival also takes visitors on a "Nisser adventure" scavenger hunt to find these Danish gnome-like creatures throughout the downtown. Plus, if you're staying for New Year celebrations, their annual Solvang Christmas Tree burn happens in January (weather permitting). It's one of the largest fire-safety demonstrations along the California Central Coast and is supervised by the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
The area is teeming with luxury resorts that can be very pricey around the holidays, but Royal Copenhagen Inn offers a reasonable alternative. Located right in the center of Solvang, the traditional inn features Danish architecture and charm.
Canton, Mississippi
Best for: Children's activities
This sleepy southern town comes alive during the holidays, when thousands of twinkling lights illuminate the town's historic Courthouse Square during the Canton Christmas Festival (also known as the "City of Lights" Christmas festival). The season's events are especially magical for kids, as they listen to storytime with Mrs. Claus and give Santa their wish list. Youngsters can also enjoy roaming characters, animated holiday displays and rides including a gorgeous carousel that makes viewing the lights all the more beautiful as you twirl. There's even an annual "Sip-N-Cider."
Most lodgings in Canton are chain hotels just outside the main part of town, where you can retire after enjoying the holiday festivities. Hampton Inn Canton offers the comforts the brand is known for, at a comfortable price as well.
Natchitoches, Louisiana
Best for: Illuminated Christmas set pieces
Perhaps best known as the inspiration and filming location for Steel Magnolias , Natchitoches (pronounced Nack-a-tish) really gets into the Creole Christmas spirit. Although the holiday festival in the movie was actually filmed in August, the event is real, complete with fireworks, a Festival of Lights parade and even Miss Merry Christmas, just like in the film. Now in its 97th year, the seasonal celebration features 300,000 lights and 100 set pieces, along with music, a lighted boat parade, a Christmas tour of homes and a kids fest. Even better, there are fireworks every Saturday until the end of December.
Finding a room in downtown Natchitoches during the festival can be difficult, but if you can, book the comfortable and convenient boutique hotel Chateau Saint Denis , just blocks from the Cane River Lake. You'll be able to enjoy all the season has to offer right outside your door.
Cape May, New Jersey
Best for: Victorian architecture
This Victorian seaside town gets even more Dickensian with its gaslights and garlands for the season. Even today, the National Historic Landmark city looks like it belongs in vintage photos of Christmases past . Take a trolley ride back in time to see the Christmas lights, hear Ghosts of Christmas Past tales and jaunt along with Mrs. Claus. Candlelight holiday house tours let you see inside Cape May's historic homes and inns, and you can enjoy a decorated "Winter Wonderwalk" at the Physick Estate, a Victorian house museum.
Cape May has plenty of comfortable accommodations, from B&Bs to seaside hotels such as La Mer Beachfront Resort . The oceanfront location can't be beat, even in winter, with cozy rooms-with-a-view to snuggle up in after an evening touring the area's historic buildings.
New York, New York
Best for: A big-city Christmas
OK, we know New York City isn't exactly a "town" in the traditional sense. But no list of Christmasy places to visit in the U.S. would be complete without it. After all, it's hard to beat NYC for Christmas spirit: home of the Rockefeller Center tree and the setting for tons of Christmas movies, from Miracle on 34th Street to Elf . Walk down Fifth Avenue to take in the amazing department store window displays; go ice skating in Central Park; visit the Holiday Shops at Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park; take in a performance of the Nutcracker ballet. And we can't forget the iconic Radio City Christmas Spectacular.
New York accommodations can be pricey, especially around the holidays, but Pod Hotels pride themselves on their affordability. With clean, modern, simple decor, plus an excellent Midtown location just a couple blocks from Times Square, Pod Times Square checks all the boxes.
Taos, New Mexico
Best for: Displays of luminarias
Many New Mexican towns follow the hundreds-of-years-old Spanish tradition of luminarias (also called farolitos ), paper bags with candles inside that symbolically light the way through the streets at Christmastime. But nowhere is the practice more intriguing than the small-town Christmas in Taos, in the northern high desert. The blending of Hispanic, Western and Native American cultures is evidenced in month-long Yuletide celebrations with bonfires, fiestas, New Mexican food and local folk art among the adobe buildings of the town. On Christmas Eve, the local ski resorts all have torchlight parades, in which spectators can watch skiers come down the mountain holding flares—this is one Christmas Eve tradition your family will love . Other Christmasy things to do include visiting the holiday pop-up store, Taos Folk, at the Stables Art Gallery, the Sagebrush 2nd Annual Winter Jamboree Arts & Craft Fair at Sagebrush Inn & Suites, and the Festival of Trees at Bataan Hall.
Located right in Taos's historic district, the Historic Taos Inn features live music, traditional cuisine and a friendly vibe. Just a bit quirky, this adobe building also has wood-burning fireplaces to relax in front of after enjoying the holiday festivities.
Franklin, Tennessee
Best for: Christmas on Main Street, USA
This village south of Nashville offers one of the best small-town Christmas experiences in the country. Its 16-block historic district, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of the most beautiful Main Streets in America —and it looks even more beautiful at holiday time. Take in the Christmas Parade, catch a holiday-themed show at the Franklin Theatre or visit the outdoor Franklin Makers Market for artisan crafts, delicious food and drink, and kids activities. But the town's signature event is the Dickens of a Christmas festival, which features musicians, dancers and Dickens characters roaming Main Street.
The beautiful Harpeth Franklin Downtown is the only hotel within Franklin itself, but a short drive up the road toward Nashville is the much more affordable Aloft Nashville Franklin . This unique, modern, pet-friendly property offers games in the lobby and live music to energize your holiday.
San Antonio, Texas
Best for: Riverside strolls
San Antonio stands out as one of the best Christmas towns for the unparalleled setting of its River Walk, decorated for the holidays with thousands of lights hung on the bald cypress trees that line the river. The season kicks off with a Holiday River Parade of floats on boats along the river, then the illuminated River Walk is open (and free) nightly. Visitors can also book a caroling boat and belt out their favorite Christmas tunes, or enjoy them from the riverside. The San Antonio Botanical Gardens also have amazing illuminations with their Lightscape walking event, featuring lights set among the gardens as well as a "Cathedral of Light," 100,000 bulbs in a glorious archway. Food, drinks and s'mores round out the festivities.
Stay at the historic 1859 hotel The Menger , with an awesome location one block from the River Walk, as well as a block from the famous Alamo. Surprisingly affordable, the property includes an amazing lobby atrium that looks fabulous decorated for Christmas.
Honolulu, Hawaii
Best for: A warm-weather Christmas vacation
Say "Mele Kalikimaka" ("Merry Christmas" in Hawaiian) as you combine your Christmas celebration with a tropical vacation in one of the best destinations to visit for a warm Christmas . Honor the heroes of Pearl Harbor while celebrating Hawaiian culture during the Waikiki Holiday Parade. Also not to be missed: Honolulu City Lights, illuminations and displays outside Honolulu Hale (City Hall) that include the 21-foot Shaka Santa and Tutu Mele (Mrs. Claus) statues, who dip their giant toes in the fountain. There's also an annual wreath exhibit at the Honolulu Hale Lane Gallery and The City Department Tree Exhibition in the Honolulu Hale.
Base your stay in Honolulu to experience all the Hawaiian capital has to offer for the holidays. The beautifully decorated historic Queen Kapiolani Hotel is just a block from Waikiki Beach, with an affordable price tag and amazing views.
Minden, Nebraska
Best for: Local history and tradition
This is a very small town with a big history. The traditions of "Nebraska's Christmas City" began more than a hundred years ago in 1915, when lights were strung on the courthouse dome to honor the arrival of the Civil War veterans organization Grand Army of the Republic. Today, city workers scale the courthouse dome using mountain climbing gear to hang the copper wires, many of which are more than 50 years old. The unique celebration continues with The Light of the World Christmas pageant, written by town residents in 1946. Other events include a kids carnival, Miss Christmas City pageant, elf run and more. If you're inspired by Minden's illuminations, you should use the best outdoor Christmas lights for your neighborhood display (maybe skip the climbing gear, though).
Minden's remote location leaves few lodging options, but Burchell's White Hill Farmhouse Inn , a small, locally run B&B, is a rare find for those looking for some country hospitality. This peaceful setting will truly make your Christmas Eve a "silent night."
Prescott, Arizona
Best for: Pioneer Christmas spirit
"Arizona's Christmas City" earns its nickname with tons of events to celebrate the season in this western gem of a town. The Courthouse Lighting, preceded by the annual Christmas parade, illuminates the gorgeous historic building as well as more than a hundred trees in the main square. Other events include the annual musical showcase, a Frontier Christmas Carol performance at Sharlot Hall Museum and a DIY wreath-making workshop at Highlands Center for Natural History.
A restored 1920s hotel, Hassayampa Inn offers historic elegance in the heart of Prescott, with its gorgeous lobby decked out for the holiday. It's just a short walk to the Courthouse square to see Prescott's light displays.
Eureka Springs, Arkansas
Best for: Christmas light forests
This historic Ozark mountain village celebrates Christmas the old-fashioned way. Its charming downtown shopping district offers unique boutiques, art galleries and craft shops for one-of-a-kind gifts . Events include the Christmas Parade of Lights and a drive-thru forest of more than 300 trees and nativity scenes leading to the 67-foot-tall Christ of the Ozarks statue. The 1886 Crescent Hotel gets into the holiday spirit with Christmas at the Crescent, featuring its own Christmas Tree Forest of lit-up arbors on its 15-acre grounds, plus sleigh rides, ice skating, s'mores around the campfire and more.
With so many holiday happenings at the 1886 Crescent Hotel , it makes sense to stay right where the action is. Overlooking the village itself, the historic Crescent offers amazing views of the Ozark Mountains and luxury amenities at affordable prices.
Vail, Colorado
Best for: Ski vacations
With its mountain villages covered by fresh blankets of snow , Colorado has more than its share of the best Christmas towns, from Aspen and Breckenridge to Telluride, Durango and Ouray. But we most love the ski town of Vail, which has tons of events to celebrate the season. Holiday events include a tree lighting and lantern walk—and of course, tons of snowy activities in addition to skiing, such as snowshoeing, outdoor ice skating and even dog-sledding and snowmobiling nearby. Vail Snow Days may be returning with their four-day festival of live music (to be determined for 2023).
The reasonably priced Sitzmark Lodge at Vail offers comfortable accommodations right in the center of Vail Village. Enjoy the year-round outdoor heated pool and hot tub, then walk right outside your door to stroll the pedestrian-only shopping and dining area, all dressed up for the holidays.
Stockbridge, Massachusetts
Best for: A Norman Rockwell Christmas
This town may be one of the best family vacation ideas ! Step into a Norman Rockwell painting, literally: The buildings of this New England small town are just as they were when Rockwell lived here, and as he depicted them in his 1967 painting "Main Street at Christmas." As you stroll through this village in the Berkshire Mountains, enjoy holiday shopping and decorations. Other seasonal activities include a holiday marketplace at the Berkshire Botanical Gardens, along with several outdoor light displays, including Winterlights at historic home Naumkeag and NightWood at The Mount, author Edith Wharton's home. To see more of the artist's work, visit the Norman Rockwell Museum in town.
Just a few miles up the road from Stockbridge is The Black Swan Inn Lee , a boutique yet affordable hotel on the banks of Laurel Lake. Relax in the tranquil, snowy setting as you gaze over October Mountain State Park, where you can take advantage of all the outdoor winter activities the Berkshires have to offer.
Leavenworth, Washington
Best for: An authentic old-world Christmas
This Bavarian-inspired town didn't always look so Old World—it actually used to be more Old West. In the 1960s, after a long period of decline, the former logging town planned a makeover influenced by the alpine landscape. Completing the overhaul, new festivals were created to draw visitors, and Leavenworth slowly grew into a must-see holiday destination. All December, the "Christmastown Village of Lights" features carolers, kids activities, roasting chestnuts and holiday characters. Beautifully lit storefronts and musical performances at the gazebo complete the classic Christmas scene. You might even be inspired to create some DIY Christmas decorations of your own.
Leavenworth is full of charming Christmas chalets, but top honors go to Bavarian Lodge . This German-style hotel features a great location across the street from the festivities, amazing mountain views from its balconies and magical Christmastime decorations, plus whirlpool tubs, fireplaces and a beer pub.
Ogden, Utah
Best for: Christmas "North Pole" cottages
You know a town is Christmas-worthy when one of the cutest Hallmark Christmas movies was filmed there. My Christmas Love was partially shot on Historic 25th Street, in this former railway hub under the shadow of the stunning Wasatch Mountains. But the town is also known for its Christmas Village, a collection of tiny cottages fit for elves, modeled after Santa's workshop at the North Pole. Visitors can marvel at the holiday displays and lights of each cottage as they wander through the winter-wonderland-like setting. The grand opening of the season follows the Electric Light Parade. Twenty minutes from downtown, enjoy outdoor winter activities at three ski resorts that get 450 inches of snow each year.
The downtown area offers some chain hotels, but for the ultimate in rustic relaxation, head up the road to Snowberry Inn . Located in a tranquil mountain setting, this log cabin B&B is the perfect place to spend a cozy holiday—guests can even enjoy the outdoor hot tub on cold winter evenings. If you don't live near Ogden, you can still get a taste of Hallmark with the official Hallmark holiday suites !
Cleveland, Ohio
Best for: Fans of A Christmas Story
There are tons of holiday events going on in downtown Cleveland, but we suggest you visit the modest Tremont neighborhood. It's home to the A Christmas Story House, the original home used to film the classic 1983 movie. Restored by a superfan to match the interior sets (only the exterior of the house was used in filming), it's now a near-replica of Ralphie's house. You can even stay in the house overnight! Visit the museum across the street for more props, costumes and memorabilia from the movie. Then head downtown for holiday musical performances, the Winterfest event and a visit to Public Square, where Higbee's department store building (in which Ralphie first spots his Red Ryder BB Gun and later has a run-in with Santa) still stands. For more Christmas events, head over to Playhouse Square to see a theatrical performance of A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker . Plus, the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s has a new "Frost" display.
If you don't stay in the Christmas Story House itself, consider the Drury Plaza Hotel . Just a five-minute walk from Public Square, the hotel in a historic building offers comfortable accommodations with amenities like an indoor pool and a great breakfast to start your day of holiday activities.
North Pole, Alaska
Best for: Northern Lights viewing
Okay, so it might not be the actual North Pole, although it is the closest Christmas town to the real one. But this village near Fairbanks, named after Santa's Arctic abode, sure enjoys playing up its namesake. The entire city stays dressed up for Christmas all year long, but the holidays are an especially magical time—it's one of the destinations that are even better in the winter. The Santa Claus House is like one big giant Christmas shop, plus you'll find a reindeer farm and a giant statue of Santa himself. Travel down streets with names like Snowman Lane, Holiday Road and Saint Nicholas Drive, then be sure to mail your Christmas cards from the local post office to get that North Pole postmark. Your kids can also send letters to Santa at North Pole, Alaska—and receive a response back!
The locally run Hotel North Pole offers plenty of Christmas kitsch—ask about booking the Santa Suite for extra special holiday decor. You may even be able to see the Northern Lights right from your hotel window.
New Castle, Delaware
Best for: Dickensian atmosphere
This Colonial village really gets into The Spirit of Christmas, a town-wide celebration featuring reenactments, museum programs and decorations. Visitors can see the historic homes dressed up for the season—there's even an annual "holiday greening" event to make wreaths to decorate the well-preserved buildings throughout the charming downtown. Also enjoy this old-fashioned Christmas town with costumed Dickens characters reenacting Victorian Christmas scenes throughout the village.
Although the historic village itself doesn't have many accommodations, there are several chain hotels nearby that offer a clean and comfortable place to stay while exploring the area. The Fairfield Inn and Suites is conveniently located, with free breakfast and an indoor pool.
St. Augustine, Florida
Best for: Dazzling lights displays
You may not get snow, but you will witness the jaw-dropping sight of the Nights of Lights's 3 million white bulbs illuminating the city. Based on the Spanish practice of lighting a candle in the window for Christmas, the annual display has become an iconic Christmas tradition of its own. See the lights from a trolley or electric cart, or take to the water and view them by boat. Plane and helicopter rides let you see the spectacle from above. Entertainment, shopping and other seasonal community activities round out the festivities, along with St. Augustine's annual Christmas Parade, where you'll see floats, marching bands, horses and St. Nick himself!
Stay at the lovely Southern Oaks Inn , just a block from the center of the action at Plaza de la Constitucíon and two blocks from the Bridge of Lions. Beautifully landscaped, and both family- and pet-friendly, this property is also affordable—a true gem.
Helen, Georgia
Best for: A Bavarian Christmas
Pretend you're in the Alps instead of the Blue Ridge Mountains in this adorable German-influenced Christmas town, one of the most picturesque small American towns you'd swear were in Europe . As if it doesn't already look storybook enough, in December it becomes a holiday paradise with its Christkindlmarkt, or Christmas market, with unique gifts, decorations, yummy food, drinks and candied treats. Plus, the annual lighting of the village has Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving on a Bavarian sleigh to greet children as the town is lit up, plus musical performances.
The quirky Heidi Motel is one of the only places in the country you can stay in a windmill! Close to the center of town, with recently updated rooms and in-room jacuzzis, this motel will make for a memorable stay.
Sun Valley, Idaho
Best for: Snow festivals
Enter the Winter Wonderland of ski resort Sun Valley, featuring a snow and ice festival to melt even the most Scrooge-like heart. From Christmas concerts and holiday-sweater parties to high tea and brunch with Santa for the kids, the entire month of December is alive with seasonal activity. But the can't-miss event is the Christmas Eve celebration, featuring a Skating in Winter Wonderland Ice Show, fireworks and the Torchlight Parade, in which skiers holding torches glide down Dollar Mountain, creating a blaze of light. Expect fireworks, complimentary cookies and hot cocoa.
Sun Valley Lodge has beautiful mountain views and easy access to all the festivities—not to mention a heated pool and on-site spa to warm up after a chilly day.
Galena, Illinois
Best for: Holiday fireworks
With its many 19th-century buildings, B&Bs and antique shops, Galena is one of the most charming small towns for a cozy, old-fashioned Christmas. Set among the snow-covered farmland of northern Illinois, the town has a charming Main Street that gets all decked out for the season. The festivities begin with "Holiday Fire in the Sky," a fireworks display over the Galena River. See 5,000 candles along streets, stairs and sidewalks during the "Night of the Luminarios and Living Windows," in which storefronts show off amazing window displays and offer extended hours. Revelers can also enjoy carolers singing the best Christmas songs from the Grant Park gazebo.
Galena boasts many well-appointed B&Bs, but the Aldrich Guest House stands out for its amazing location just a few blocks from Grant Park, as well as scrumptious breakfasts and comfortable rooms. Elegant yet simply decorated, it's the perfect spot for a cozy holiday away from the crowds.
Valley Junction, Iowa
Best for: A Midwestern getaway
Is this holiday heaven? No, it's Iowa! One of the best of the state's many small-town Christmas celebrations happens in the thriving, quaint village of Valley Junction. For four Thursday evenings during the season, the historic railroad town in the West Des Moines area celebrates with Jingle in the Junction. The streets are lined with more than 125,000 twinkling lights, and visitors can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, Santa and caroling. Shop for gifts in the 150 unique stores, antique shops and other businesses downtown. It'll make you feel as if you're back in your own hometown.
For a touch of upscale luxury during your down-home visit to Valley Junction, stay a few minutes up the road in the heart of Des Moines at the gorgeous, historic Des Lux Hotel . With its affordable rates, along with in-room fireplaces and whirlpool tubs, you'll want to spend the holidays in the Midwest more often.
Lindsborg, Kansas
Best for: Traditional Swedish celebrations
Known as "Little Sweden," this town incorporates its Swedish heritage into its brightly colored architecture, Swedish horse sculptures called dalas and, of course, its Christmas celebrations. The St. Lucia Festival, one of the fascinating winter solstice traditions around the world , honors the legend of Lucia, who came to Scandinavia bearing light and food during a famine. Wearing white gowns with red sashes and crowns of lingonberry, young women parade with stjärngosse (star boys) to symbolize life during the dark winter solstice. Traditional Swedish services of Julotta (Christmas morning) and Annandag Jule (the day after Christmas), plus a Juletide concert, are also part of the Scandinavian holiday festivities.
The candy-colored Rosberg House bed-and-breakfast looks just like a gingerbread house. And the lush decor inside—not to mention the delectable breakfasts—are just as sweet. It's also conveniently located in the center of town, within walking distance of art galleries, shops and restaurants.
Annapolis, Maryland

The historic seaport looks picture-perfect at holiday time. See the lighting of trees during the city's Grand Illumination. Drive through Lights on the Bay in Sandy Point State Park to view illuminated displays along the Chesapeake Bay. Downtown shops will stay open for Midnight Madness, so you can get your gift-giving on, and the Chocolate Binge Festival offers delectable treats along with music and entertainment. Hear the traditional gathering of the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club and the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra for the singing of Handel's Messiah. Finally, the Eastport Yacht Club Light Parade features dozens of lit-up vessels sailing through the harbor.
Comprising three separate historic buildings, Historic Inns of Annapolis stands out for its distinctive character and prime central location. Just step outside your door to find all the holiday shopping and events the town has to offer.
Frankenmuth, Michigan
Best for: A traditional German Christmas
True, this town is home to the world's largest Christmas-themed store, Bronner's Christmas Wonderland. But that's not the only reason Frankenmuth makes it onto our list of the best Christmas towns. Settled by German immigrants, "Little Bavaria" looks like you've stepped right into a fairy tale—and it's magical at holiday time. Horse-drawn carriages clip-clop past quaint boutiques, German-influenced architecture and 150 trees decorated with white lights. In the center of it all stands a 40-foot tree decked in red and green lights—the Christmas colors , of course—complete with an illumination and music show. Visit reindeer at a local farm, go ice skating in the outdoor rink or peruse the traditional German Christkindlmarkt.
Where else would one stay in Little Bavaria than the German-inspired Bavarian Inn Lodge ? The town's signature hotel has been delighting visitors for decades, and for good reason, as you'll really feel you've been transported to Europe.
Stillwater, Minnesota
Best for: A white Christmas
With some areas of Minnesota having a near-100% chance of a white Christmas, it's hard to narrow down the best holiday-worthy town in the area. But Stillwater, the state's historic birthplace near Minneapolis, has been called one of America's most picturesque towns, and it's especially enchanting at holiday time. This river village's Hometown Holiday event runs throughout the season, with many boutiques, restaurants and other establishments luring visitors with wagonette carriage rides and Victorian carolers. Musical and stage performances, a holiday bazaar at the old courthouse, a fun Twinkle Party in which guests are encouraged to adorn themselves with battery-powered lights, and many more events round out the festivities.
Stay downtown at the 1927 Lowell Inn for proximity to everything happening in Stillwater. Offering both Victorian-themed and modern rooms, the hotel also hosts Holiday Tea weekends in December.
Bigfork, Montana
Best for: A mountain escape
The mountains of Montana look even more magical at Christmastime. Thanks to the volunteer "elves" of the artsy town of Bigfork, on the shores of Flathead Lake, "Montana's Christmas Village" gets a holiday makeover featuring evergreen garlands strewn over the businesses of downtown. Come for winter activities like downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, dog sledding, sleigh rides, ice fishing and the nearby Glacier National Park. Then stay for a holiday art walk, tree lighting, parade and performances of A Touch of Christmas holiday music and other seasonal shows at the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts.
After outdoor winter fun or holiday cultural activities, retreat to the quiet Bigfork Mountain Lake Lodge to cozy up by the fireplace or relax in the jacuzzi. Even more gorgeous covered in snow (which it's likely to be in December), the hotel boasts views overlooking Flathead Lake.
Jackson, Wyoming
Best for: Animal lovers
