Horseback Riding
The best way to see the sonoran desert is from in the saddle..
When it comes to the Southwest, there's a bunch that Hollywood gets right, including the horse culture. Horseback riding is as much a part of Tucson and Southern Arizona as cactus, Wildcat basketball, and sweet, salty, transcendent margaritas.
Saddle up at a guest ranch , a resort , one of our public stables, or one of several private stables that specialize in horseback riding. Never ridden before? Not a problem. Riding lessons and wrangler-guided trips with trailside meals are available for folks of all skill levels, and special sunrise, sunset, and moonlight rides make memories to last a lifetime.
Whether you choose a half-day solo jaunt or longer group ride, you can't beat seeing the Sonoran Desert by horseback to open your heart and mind to the American West.

Colossal Cave Mountain Park
Stepping into Colossal Cave is like stepping back into time, and the wild wild west, where bandits ran rampant and being a cowboy or cowgirl was the only way of life. With 2400 Acres of pristine desert land and three different trailheads cutting through to the Sonoran desert, there’s a lot to see and do in this park.
For any first riders or those just getting back in the saddle that might feel uneasy, the surefooted horses and the knowledgeable wranglers who arent afraid of a pun or two will have you fitted and galloping in no time.
One of the best things about this place is that they offer sunset rides. There’s nothing like a Tucson sunset, and seeing it from atop a horse is an experience you will never forget.
The guided trail ride takes you through the La Posta Quemada Ranch, through the old National Mail Stagecoach Route. The guides will guide you through the sprawling geological formations and unique mortar bedrock formations used by the Hohokam culture. In addition, there are sights of the unique flora and fauna native to the Sonoran Desert.
The stables also offer different cave tours for different level adventurers. There are 40 minutes for families looking for a fun-filled way to keep the kids occupied while still learning. In addition, there is a 1.5-hour for $50 tour for kids aged 12 and older looking to learn about the mysterious cave systems and history.
In addition, the 3.5 at $100 per hour wild cave tour is better suited for “trained” adventure seekers.
Their pricing for guided trail rides is as follows
- 30 minutes for $40
- 1 hour for $50
- 1.5 hours for $70
- Sunset rides for $65
- Wagon rides for $7.50 per person with a $75.00 minimum

One thing that sets this place apart is that they offer equine-assisted therapy for those with special needs, veterans, and first responders.
The staff here is fantastic, and they genuinely have a passion for teaching people of all ages about horses and how to ride them.

Its charged at $65 per hour, discounted to $60 if you purchase five lessons.
Another great thing about Heart Of The Horse is that they offer Hybrid rides. These rides are for riders who want to ride on the trail but need guidance and instruction.

Afterward, they will take you to the round pen, arena, or trail, where you will put your knowledge to the test with a senior wrangler beside you.
It is charged at $85 per trot, walk or lope for 1 hour.

Merritt Kent (Airbnb since 2022) public review: From Merritt Kent on an Airbnb review: “Wow what an amazing experience! I have thought about the beautiful horse Mosaic a bunch since I left. Such a fun, gentle, and patient horse! Perfect to learn on. Laura was an awesome teacher. She’s also ...
I booked the two hour Equine Experience. Laura and Mosaic were great teachers, both very patient with me. Laura is extremely knowledgeable, and did a great job of telling and showing, and then trusting me to try while helping if needed. She worked well with my knowledge and comfort level, while also pushing me as I needed it. This was a wonderful way to learn more about horses and riding, and in a beautiful setting. It was so much fun and an amazing experience.
I had a great time with Laura as my guide yesterday at the China Cabinet Ranch. I took the Equine Experience and enjoyed a 1.5 hours of instruction and then a 1.5 hour trail ride on the sweetest girl named Mosaic. Not only did Laura know the horses and the trails, she stopped for photos at great spots and we visited the whole time. It was relaxing and fun! The horses "knew" the trails, too, and were easy to ride. If you're looking for a great ride with gentle horses and a knowledgable guide, I highly recommend this trail ride. I will defnitely be back for more! Thank you so much, Laura.
I booked a 3-hour Equine Experience with Laura, and it was a fantastic day. I have no real horse experience, so we started with learning to put on the harness and leading the horse in the pen. Then we groomed, saddled up, and practiced maneuvering in the pen until I was comfortable in the saddle. Laura takes great care of and is very respectful of her animals, which I'm sure it's why they're so gentle and responsive. The trail was gorgeous, and Laura knows the terrain, plants, and animals. I would definitely ride with her again.

Double R Guest Ranch: A Place for Horseback Riding Enthusiasts
If you are looking for the perfect Horseback Riding experience that takes you away from it all, out to the country, you will find it at the Double R Guest Ranch. This is the Old West, largely untouched since the days of Cochise and Geronimo.
Ron Sirota of Double R Guest Ranch
Ron Sirota called me one day in late 2019 and wanted to know how his Double R Guest Ranch could get a listing on our Southern Arizona Guide. I told him that if he would like, we would come to his ranch and write a story about it for the Guide. So, on a cold morning in early January 2020, Ms. Karen and I drove to Benson to visit with Ron and his lovely wife, Trina at the Double R.
The cabin at Double R Guest Ranch
The road from Benson to the ranch is mostly paved, but when the pavement ends it’s a good dirt road the rest of the way except for the last mile or so. It is approximately 1.5 hours from Tucson and 25 miles north of Benson, the closest Post Office.
Once at the ranch, Ron greeted us cheerfully and began showing us around the place. The first place we visited was the one-bedroom cabin they built for overnight guests. It is a cozy place, and sports a loft that could be used for a children’s sleeping area. Meals are included in the package stays.
This is their passion. They pride themselves on having well-behaved horses suitable for every riding level, from beginner to advanced.
For those of us city slickers, Ron explained that the rural land in Cochise County is sold in Sections; a Section being 640 acres. The property is 100 sections. Google tells me that that is 10 square miles, or a lot of exploring on horseback.
Dining Area at Double R Guest Ranch
Double R offers a variety of rides, from one-hour to all day. The woodland ride is described on the website as “the most picturesque ride of its type in southern Arizona. This ride traverses through heavily wooded forests with hills, creeks, lots of beautiful old growth Mesquite trees, and wildlife to include deer, a wide variety of birds, coyote, and many other animals and reptiles native to this area, are often spotted on our trails. This ride is suitable for beginners but challenging enough to be interesting for more experienced riders. Approximately 1 hour.”
Ron and Trina by the firepit with 2 of their 8 dogs, Lexi and Lucy. Ron says at night with the fire burning, this is his favorite place on the Ranch.
Even in the short time we spent with Ron and Trina, we could tell they would make great hosts for their guests. Clearly, they care about their horses and the people who come here for a ride. Even their 8 dogs love the place. All very laid back.
Ms. Karen inquired about the name of the Ranch, ” Double R.” Ron explained, “It’s my Ranch”. Enough said.
After several back surgeries in recent years, my horseback riding days are sadly behind me. The pictures on their website, however, make this look like a pleasant adventure. Ms. Karen says she will go back soon, take a trail ride and report back.
Double R Guest Ranch earns a 5-Saguaro rating from us as well, for experience, solitude and friendliness. If you love the cowboy life, this will be a great experience.

Compliance status
Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.
- Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
- Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Disability profiles supported in our website
- Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
- Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
- Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
- ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
- Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
- Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments
- Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
- Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
- Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
- Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
- Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
- Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
- Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

- 8 Best Places to Live in Arizona in 2024
Considering the state of Arizona as a potential relocation destination in 2024 is entirely sensible. Arizona, known as the Grand Canyon State, boasts a population of 7.276 million people. The state offers a variety of attractions, including beautiful cities with stunning views, friendly locals who make newcomers feel welcome, and a wealth of outdoor adventures and social activities. Before settling down, it's important to consider factors such as the crime rate and tax laws. Here’s an overview of three of the best places to live in Arizona in 2024.
Lake Havasu City
Located in western Arizona, Lake Havasu City is renowned for water sports on Lake Havasu and its rich Native American cultural history. It is safer than 29% of U.S. neighborhoods. The local sales tax rate is notably low, but it's important to verify the current rates as they can fluctuate. Outdoor activities abound, including boating, fishing, and more. Attractions such as London Bridge and the Desert Wildflower Hiking Trail offer diverse entertainment options. Noteworthy 2024 events include the Mick Adams and the Stones Tribute Concert and the Havasu 95 Speedway Race.
Phoenix, the state capital, is a must-mention for Arizona's top living spots. With a crime rate of 37 incidents per 1,000 residents, it's crucial to consider safety. The city has a flat 2.5% individual income tax rate. Outdoor and indoor activities are plentiful, ranging from hiking at Camelback Mountain to exploring the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. A highlight event in 2024 is the NCAA men’s Final Four basketball tournament.
Often associated with vibrant nightlife, including bachelor and bachelorette parties, Scottsdale offers more than just entertainment. It is safer than 19% of U.S. neighborhoods, with a combined sales tax rate of 8.05% in 2024. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the Sonoran Desert's beauty and various trails, while dining options like Barnaby’s Café enrich the local culinary scene. Upcoming events include the Persian New Year Festival and the 66th Annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market.
Overlooking Flagstaff when considering relocation options in Arizona would be a mistake. Flagstaff is considered to be safer than 92% of U.S. cities, contrary to being "8% safer," which inaccurately implies it is less safe than most. As of 2024, the sales tax rate in Flagstaff is 9.18%. Outdoor enthusiasts will find Flagstaff appealing, with attractions like Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and the Campbell Mesa Trails, which offer opportunities for hiking, biking, and leisurely walks. Wildlife observation is a highlight at locations such as Picture Canyon and Mount Elden trails. The city also boasts a vibrant dining and nightlife scene with establishments like Flagstaff Brewing Company, Charly’s Pub and Grill, and Beaver Street Brewery. Notable events in 2024 include the Leap Year Celebration, the Canyon Translations Art Exhibit, and the Coconino Quilters' Guild Library Quilt Show.
Sedona is widely regarded as one of Arizona's most breathtaking locales. Crime analytics indicate there are 21 incidents per 1,000 residents, positioning Sedona as a relatively safe community. The sales tax rate for Sedona residents stands at 9.85% in 2024. Sedona offers a plethora of adventures for the outdoor enthusiast. Horseback riding excursions can be arranged through Wild Western Horseback Adventures, kayaking trips with Verde Adventures, and fishing expeditions coordinated by the US Forest Service Red Rock Ranger District. For those preferring indoor activities, options include the Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock, the Sedona Performing Arts Center, and the Blazin’ M Ranch Western Dinner Theater. Upcoming events in 2024 that locals can anticipate include Sedona Sound Healing, Satya Yoga Immersion, and the Annual Spring Art Show.
Tucson offers a wide array of exploratory opportunities for those considering relocation to Arizona. The city's crime rate is noted at 42 incidents per 1,000 residents. As of 2024, Tucson's sales tax rate is 8.7%. Outdoor enthusiasts can revel in the natural beauty of Saguaro National Park, hike through Coronado National Forest, and engage in bird watching at the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory. Among Tucson’s premier attractions are the ASARCO Mineral Discovery Center & Mine Tours, the Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium, and Amity's Dragonfly Gallery. Upcoming events in 2024 include the Tucson Rodeo Parade, the Cologuard Classic PGA Tour Championship, and the Tucson International Mariachi Conference.
Mesa is a city that offers a quality living environment within Arizona. The crime rate here is 23 incidents per 1,000 residents. In 2024, the sales tax rate is set at 8.3%. Mesa offers a range of outdoor activities, such as family outings at Eastmark Great Park and scenic walks around Mesa Riverview Park. Additional attractions include cruising on the Dolly Steamboat for picturesque views. Indoor pursuits can be enjoyed at Hale Centre Theatre, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and TopGolf Gilbert. Notable events for Mesa residents include the Rydables Scavenger Hunt and the Phoenix Symphony Performance.
Prescott is an attractive city for those looking to move to Arizona, with a crime rate of only 17 incidents per 1,000 residents. The sales tax rate as of 2024 is 8.35%. Prescott National Forest provides ample outdoor activities such as rock climbing, hunting, picnicking, birdwatching, hiking, and biking. Wine tasting is a popular pastime, with Verde Valley Vineyards nearby. The city’s 2024 event calendar includes the Harlem Globetrotters 2024 World Tour, the Prescott Regional SciTech Fest, and the Dream Merchant Art Exhibit.
The Takeaway
With their low crime rates and reasonable sales taxes, these cities in Arizona are appealing options for relocation. Each city offers unique attractions: from the water sports in Lake Havasu City and the stunning hiking trails in Phoenix to the aesthetic delights in Scottsdale and vibrant nightlife in Flagstaff. For those considering a move to a new state, these cities in Arizona are certainly worth considering in 2024.
