The 5 Most Beautiful Train Journeys in New Zealand

The scenic route

New Zealand is consistently voted as one of the most beautiful, varied and dramatic places in the world when it comes to scenery and landscapes. This accounts for the numerous camper-vans you’ll see zipping through scenic roads, pulling up every now and again to take in some spectacular vista. However, there’s another great way to see the country and that is by rail. Here is our guide to the five most beautiful train journeys in Aotearoa.

The marlborough flyer.

Convenience-wise you’re going to find it hard to beat the Marlborough Flyer for pure ease of transport. This train starts off in Picton at the top of the South Island, the port of which is connected to Wellington by the Interislander ferry service. So if you’re tripping through New Zealand from top to bottom, this train is the easy and logical next step if you want to cruise in comfort. It actually leaves from the ferry terminal, meaning stress is kept to an absolute minimum. A new steam-hauled service began in December 2017 over the 19 miles (30km) to Blenheim – a lovely little city that is very much worth exploring. The train uses historic carriages and a 1915-built locomotive to reach Blenheim for wine tours and the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. This contains the collection of First World War aircraft set up by Lord of the Rings trilogy director Sir Peter Jackson as well as a Second World War collection with the only flyable Avro Anson and a Griffon-powered Spitfire.

Taieri Gorge Railway, Dunedin

This is just the rail journey that anyone who counts themselves as a keen photographer needs to take. The Twenties carriages have open balconies so photographers can take unobstructed pictures of the landscape, and there is a buffet car and shop on board for when you need a rest from clicking away on that shutter button. And you will be doing a lot of that because this train runs through some pretty awe-inspiring country. For most of its length it twists and turns through a spectacularly deep gorge, leaping across vertiginous defiles on lattice viaducts and clinging to ledges in the hillsides. Most trains run as far as Pukerangi, but on certain days they reach Middlemarch, the eastern end of the Rail Trail. The northern end of the Rail Trail is also one of New Zealand ‘s most popular long-distance cycle routes.

How’s that for scenery

The Northern Explorer

This is probably the most modern and comfortable rail journey in New Zealand. The Northern Explorer carriages have an advanced air bag suspension system for quieter and smoother travel as well as un-tinted, non-reflective, panoramic side and roof windows to capture the dramatic coastal and mountain views of the magnificent North Island. It also features GPS-triggered journey commentary in five languages at your seat via headphones, information displays and overhead HD video, plus central heating and air conditioning for passenger comfort. This is scenic rail travel for the 21st century. This 10-hour ride between Auckland and Wellington will see you take in the sights of New Zealand farmland and rugged bush landscapes. You’ll then ascend up the world famous Raurimu Spiral to the volcanic plateau, passing the majestic volcanoes of Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe, and Mt Ruapehu – home of the North Island ski fields – then descend again through stunning river gorges to the farming landscapes and rocky seascapes of the lower North Island.

Heading down the rails

The Coastal Pacific

However, it will be back, so if you’re a railway nut or like the idea of seeing a bit of the South Island by rail, then don’t despair and consider this journey as it’s a thumping good one. The Coastal Pacific train operates between the delightful port of Picton, the gateway to the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, and Kaikoura , the home of whale watching, as well as onto Christchurch, the South Island’s largest city. This means that, if you’re feeling like life on the rails is for you, you can hop straight on the train at Christchurch and catch the TranzAlpine as described above. The Coastal Pacific takes you through the wine growing region of Blenheim and through to the rugged Kaikoura mountain ranges on one side of your train. The Pacific Ocean coastline is on the other side with views of marine wildlife such as seals and penguins. You’ll also get to see some of New Zealand’s finest horticultural and farmland areas of the Canterbury Plains – all from the comfort of your carriage.

A comprehensive guide to New Zealand’s Train Journeys

New Zealand train journeys are a unique and relaxing way to see another side of this spectacular country.

Many of New Zealand's most stunning views remain inaccessible by road. This is where rail travel comes into scenic play. Clever engineering has resulted in a small (but comprehensive) railway network offering the opportunity to enjoy some of those views - and there are many incredible train journeys available. Complete with food and drink, panoramic windows and reclining seats, these journeys allow you to sit back and enjoy the view as you traverse snowy alpine passes, remote national parks, volcanic fields and windswept coastlines.

North Island

The North Island has one key scenic railway, The Northern Explorer and two (notable) smaller ones - Driving Creek Railway and The Forgotten World adventures.

  • The Northern Explorer: Cutting through the heart of the North Island, the Northern Explorer travels between Auckland - New Zealand's largest metro area - and Wellington - New Zealand’s political and cultural capital. The 12 hour trip is truly remarkable, crossing lush farmland and the volcanic plateau. See Tongariro National Park - home to Mordor, the fictional stronghold of Sauron in Lord of the Rings - through wide panoramic windows and open air viewing decks. The park’s three active volcanoes - Mount Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe - can be spotted along with ancient lava flows, native beech forest and deep river gorges. You'll also go through the renowned Raurimu Spiral - an astounding feat of engineering. Passengers can choose to sit around tables, or in recliners that can be rotated to face whichever direction the train is traveling. The carriage windows are non-tinted, non-reflective glass - optimal for taking pictures as you travel. Overhead HD screens keep track of your journey while an automated commentary is available via headphones at your seat.
  • Driving Creek Railway: This one hour narrow gorge railway trip is located in the Coromandel and provides a thrilling insight into the history of the area. Acclaimed potter Barry Brickell originally developed this railway as a means of transporting clay to his kiln. The innovatively designed train carriages journey through regenerating kauri forest and native bush before ending with soaring views over the Hauraki Gulf and surrounding islands. Unique pottery sculptures and outdoor art line the tracks while the neighbouring predator free wildlife sanctuary is a must see.
  • The Forgotten World Railway Adventures: This railway adventure is like no other. Travelling through the heart of Taranaki, you’ll take  specially adapted golf carts along decommissioned railway lines go over bridges and through tunnels to faded townships of the past. Venture into the Republic of Whangamomona, once a thriving pre-war community, now a ‘ghost town’ of 40 people. Learn about the hardy pioneers who built this line - an essential link to the outside world.  Livelihoods such as coal mining and farming were only viable because of this rail connection. Abandoned stations along the line are visible, but decay is evident - and this only adds to the experience. Choose from between one and four day tours.

South Island

There are many more scenic rail journeys in the South due to the dramatic landscape. The most well known is the TranzAlpine Scenic Train but other notable journeys include  The Oamaru Seasider, The Coastal Pacific and the Taieri Gorge Railway.

  • The TranzAlpine: The TranzAlpine tracks a route from Christchurch to Greymouth - from one coast of the South Island to another - and is considered one of the world's greatest scenic railway journeys. You'll cross the Canterbury Plains before weaving your way through the gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri. Ascending the Southern Alps, you'll be awestruck by the sheer grandeur of these mountains, before descending into native beech rainforest to arrive in the seaside town of Greymouth. With huge panoramic windows and an open air viewing car to better enable photography, passengers can choose to sit one way or around a table. As with the Northern Explorer, HD screens track the journey while at-seat audio commentary is available throughout.
  • The Coastal Pacific: The Coastal Pacific follows the coast from port town Picton to Christchurch. You’ll pass through Marlborough wine country, the Kaikoura Ranges and the patchwork Canterbury Plains - traversing over 98 kilometres of rugged coastline. On this journey the sky seems endless - dissolving into the blue of the pacific ocean horizon. Watch the seabirds and seals from open air carriages or view the mountains from inside through huge panoramic windows and reclining seats.

We recommend that people add at least one of these experiences to their New Zealand visit because a train is a great platform for taking in New Zealand scenery. Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, christchurch to greymouth on the scenic tranzalpine train.

It's perhaps the most scenic train ride in New Zealand, and one of the most scenic train trips anywhere in the world.  The TranzAlpine, run by New Zealand train operator KiwiRail as part of their Great Journeys of New Zealand division, runs once daily between Christchurch, Arthur's Pass and Greymouth on the South Island's west coast, through the amazing misty mountain scenery of the Southern Alps.  The journey takes 4½ hours, and if you like you can go there and back in a day with an hour in Greymouth.  Or take the TranzAlpine one-way, and connect with buses down the west coast to Franz Josef Glacier.  Although I rate the North Island's Northern Explorer from Auckland to Wellington as a far more historic and epic route, and in many ways almost equally scenic, you certainly won't regret buying a ticket for the TranzAlpine!  This page explains the TranzAlpine's timetable, fares, how to buy the cheapest tickets, and what there is to see on the journey.

Tranz-Alpine train times & fares

The TranzAlpine is the most successful of all of Kiwi Rail's passenger trains, popular with tour groups because of the spectacular scenery through the Southern Alps between Christchurch and the South Island's west coast at Greymouth.

The Man in Seat 61 says:   "It's a fantastic trip that easily lives up to its reputation, but in many ways the TranzAlpine is not as epic or historic as the Auckland-Wellington Northern Explorer , which remains my personal favourite NZ train ride."

Days of operation :  The TranzAlpine has historically run daily all year.  In 2024 it's running on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays & Mondays in each direction until late September, then every day.

Composition :  Scenic class seating, Scenic Plus class seating (with at-seat meal included), cafe-bar & open air viewing platform, .  The journey is 223.8km.

Children aged 2-14 travel at reduced fare.  Infants under 2 travel free.

£1 = 1.9 NZ Dollars.   US$1 = 1.55 NZ$

How to buy tickets

What's it like on the tranzalpine.

The TranzAlpine was relaunched with new 'AK' panoramic sightseeing coaches built in Kiwi Rail's Dunedin workshops in 2011-2012.  These have replaced the old rebuilt 1950s carriages used until late 2012. Photos courtesy of James Chuang

Scenic class seats , most facing direction of travel, all lining up with huge panoramic windows - note the roof skylights too!.  There's loads of legroom even if you're over six feet tall.  Seats are not allocated at booking, but by the train manager before departure.  However, if you book by phone (or book online then call Kiwi Rail's freephone number when you get to NZ quoting your booking reference) you can make a seating request.  Seats on the right-hand side of the train going to Greymouth probably get the best views, or the left-hand side returning to Christchurch.  Four friends or family travelling together could request one of the few bays of 4 seats facing each other around a table, keen photographers might want to request a seat close to the open-air viewing car.  Requests can't be guaranteed, but it doesn't hurt to ask!  All your heavy baggage is checked in to the baggage van, only hand luggage may be taken into the seating coaches.  All seats in the new 'AK' cars have power sockets for mobiles, laptops or cameras (New Zealand voltage and plug, of course).  Larger photo .

Scenic Plus class seats:   A new Scenic Plus class has been added to the TranzAlpine as from April 2023, in a dedicated carriage with extra-legroom reclining seats.  A freshly-cooked meal & wine is included, prepared by a chef in the adjacent kitchen car and served at your seat.  If you get any photos of this car and/or of the food provided, please get in touch !

Cafe-bar:   In the centre of the train is a counter selling tea, coffee, wine, beer, spirits, snacks & light microwaveable meals at reasonable prices.  I can recommend a cream tea in the afternoon, and a glass of Montana Sauvignon Blanc!  You take your food & drink back to your seat. Bring cash if possible as cards are sometimes not accepted if the credit card machine is out of cellphone range.  Larger photo .

Open-air viewing platform:   At one end of the train is a large open-air viewing platform, ideal for seeing and photographing the scenery, with no glass in between you and it.  Children must be accompanied.  The viewing car now has additional rails to prevent people leaning out.  A second open-air car is now provided on the TranzAlpine exclusively for Scenic Plus class guests.

Never travel overseas without travel insurance from a reliable insurer, with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover.  It should also cover cancellation and loss of cash and belongings, up to a sensible limit.  An annual multi-trip policy is usually cheaper than several single-trip policies even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself.  Here are some suggested insurers.  Seat61 gets a small commission if you buy through these links.

Get an eSIM with mobile data package

Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a mobile data package for the country you're visiting and stay connected.  Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM card so you don't need to buy a physical SIM, including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list .  Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .

Get a Curve card for foreign travel

Most banks give you a poor exchange rate, then add a foreign transaction fee on top.  A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month at time of writing.  The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.

How it works:   1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android .  2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses.  3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card.  4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app.  You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.

I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader.  The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than digging a card out).  I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great.  See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.

Get a VPN for safe browsing.  W hy you need a VPN

When you're travelling you often use free WiFi in public places which may not be secure.  A VPN encrypts your connection so it's always secure, even on unsecured WiFi.  It also means you can select the geographic location of the IP address you browse with, to get around geoblocking which a surprising number of websites apply.  See VPNs & why you need one explained .  ExpressVPN is a best buy with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot ranking which I use myself - I've signed up as an ExpressVPN affiliate, and if you go with expressvpn.com using the links on this page, you should see a special deal, 3 months free with an annual subscription.  I get a small commission to help support this site.

Carry an Anker powerbank

Tickets, reservations, vaccination records and Interrail or Eurail passes are often held digitally on your mobile phone, so it's vital to keep it charged.  I always carry an Anker powerbank which can recharge my phone several times over if I can't get to a power outlet.  Buy from Amazon.co.uk or from Buy from Amazon.com .

The wonders of New Zealand require a visitor’s full attention, so why not give your eyes a treat and roll through the country on a scenic train ride ? Great Journeys New Zealand offers a brand-new collection of multiday, guided rail tours that sweep across spectacular landscapes on both North and South islands .

The just-launched rail adventures take three existing train lines and mix them with a fresh crop of guided tour itineraries — ranging from six to 17 days — leading guests on a variety of off-rail excursions in search of Kiwi experiences. The Northern Explorer train starts in Auckland and runs just over 400 miles south to New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington. Along the way, tours bring guests to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves and into Tongariro National Park, where they’ll see towering Mount Ruapehu. After crossing the 58-mile Cook Strait aboard the Interislander ferry, travelers can transfer to the Coastal Pacific train at Picton. The route passes through Blenheim’s vineyards and hugs Kaikōura's coast (renowned for whale sightings) on the way to Christchurch. Finally, the TranzAlpine train traverses the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps between Christchurch and Greymouth. Private coach or shuttle tours can whisk passengers to nearby destinations, including Queenstown and Milford Sound.

“Great Journeys New Zealand takes travelers through some of the country's most stunning and diverse landscapes, from rolling hills and lush forests to rugged coastlines and sparkling oceans,” says Mark Hockley, senior tour manager and partnership specialist at Great Journeys New Zealand. “The scenic routes provide panoramic views that can't be found by road, and the relaxed and comfortable train ride allows travelers to sit back, relax, and fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of New Zealand .”

Tour guides provide local insights and personal introductions. “There’s a story at every stop, from tales about Kiwiana culture to facts about New Zealand's curious birds, the history of Māori culture, geology in volcanic regions, rock formations, orientation of cities and locations in New Zealand, and so much more,” Hockley says. An audio commentary system, triggered by GPS, offers additional facts and historical background as the train chugs along. “The views really are breathtaking — from the volcanic peaks of Middle Earth in Ruapehu to sighting the mystical Blue Lake in the northern reaches of New Zealand's Southern Alps — but we also visit local stores and meet sheep farmers and winemakers, and hear their stories along the way,” he says.

“Māori storytelling and legends are woven into every guide's narrative throughout all trips — it's an important part of the New Zealand experience,” says Hockley. “We offer unique cultural experiences on many of our tours, ranging from visiting a Māori village to tasting Māori food, learning about Māori arts and crafts, and more.”

Scenic Class carriages are open and airy, thanks to panoramic windows and skylights, with spacious seating and airbag suspension for a comfy ride. Open carriages are also available — perfect for fresh-air viewing and photography. When you’re hungry, the onboard Scenic Cafe offers New Zealand wine and beer selections, along with dishes showcasing local ingredients, from roasted free-range chicken with Manuka honey to High Country lamb to South Island hot-smoked salmon salad. Starting April 14, Great Journeys will add Scenic Plus service , with a new, custom-built carriage plus a dedicated chef.

Tours are offered on specific dates from January through early May, and travelers can choose between Classic (six to 15 days, with a maximum group size of 35) or Signature (six to 17 days, with a maximum group size of 20).

Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand  often confused as the capital of the country, is a bustling city and home to a variety of attractions. Often it’s the first port of call before exploring the rest of the country. But don’t skip town before visiting one or a couple of the surrounding islands which are great for hiking or for a delicious wine tour.

Within Auckland city center itself be sure to visit the famed Giapo for a surprise scoop of ice cream and make your way to Britomart for some shopping. Delve into the country’s history by making a trip to the Auckland War Memorial Museum or learn more about the country’s developments at the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) .

Enjoy a little hike to the top of Mt. Eden , or try some local foods from the Matakana Farmers Market before heading off to the next destination.

Day Trip: Island Hopping

Rangitoto Island is iconic to the city of Auckland due to the dormant volcanic cone that is just off of the city. You can go to the Auckland ferry terminal and there catch a ferry to where you can enjoy a relaxed hike or go on a guided tour up to the summit for some of the most spectacular views that you will ever see. With views over the city, including the sky tower , plus views over the island and the bright blue waters.

Now if you fancy a wine tour from some of the best vineyards in the region, take a ferry from the Auckland ferry terminal to Waiheke Island . After arriving on the island, they have a great local bus service that will make stops at some of the best vineyards with great views over the island and the vines. Where the vineyards on the island are isn’t incredibly large and can also be walked to, giving you astounding views over the ocean and lush green that covers the island. Make sure to check all of the ferry schedules to make sure you can get back to Auckland.

Hamilton: Hot Springs And Hobbits

The fourth-largest city in the country and is often overlooked by travelers, mainly used as a way to get to some of the more famous attractions like Hobbiton and Rotorua . The city is very unique with its rolling green hills, caves and the various surf beaches to be enjoyed.

Before heading out on day trips, don’t forget to visit the intriguing Hamilton Gardens . New Zealand became famous to many fantasy lovers due to the Lord of the Rings being filmed there. Hobbiton is a huge attraction for visitors as you are able to visit Middle Earth , discover Bagend , enjoy a drink at the Green Dragon and even see the Party Tree . The best way to get to Hobbiton from Hamiliton is with a private tour, or there are also options to go on your own which are bit more pricy first by bus (0:34h) to Karapiro and then a private taxi (0:26h) to the Hobbiton movie set.

An easy bus ride (1:30-2:00h) from Hamilton is Rotorua , famous for its thermal springs and odd eggy smell that lingers in the air. The Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland is home to colorful hot springs, geysers, pools, and mud pits. Head to a spa where the thermal waters and mud will be the perfect New Zealand treatment. Here you can stroll along a raised walkway amongst the trees on suspension bridges and during the evening you will see the walkway lit up with a colorful light display and beautifully-designed lanterns.

To ensure yourself a great way to see some of the important sights of Rotorua and to visit the three lakes in the area, head out on a duck tour. You will ride through Rotorua on an amphibious WWII landing craft experiencing an exciting and hilarious tour before heading out onto the lakes. Return by bus to Hamilton or stay over night in Rotorua before heading back.

Otorohanga: Glowing Caves

Next, on our New Zealand itinerary is Otorohanga . Often just used as a gateway for visiting the famous Waitomo caves , you will have the chance to see glowworms, street murals, and displays of the country’s significant icons, such as the kiwi bird . Grab a map and see if you can find as many of the ‘ Kiwiana ’ displays throughout the town, with displays for the All Blacks team, Aunt Daisy, and even farm dogs.

Probably the most famous attraction for this region is the Waitomo caves that are home to mystic glowworms. You can enjoy several different tour options available, but take the time to tour three different caves within the area. The Aranui Cave has a hidden entrance within a forest and is home to impressive formations of limestone with large stalactites. The Ruakuri Cave walks you through the breeding ground of the famous glow worms, and have the chance to see some more impressive formations, then lastly enjoy the Waitomo Glowworm Caves where you will be taken on a boat deep into the cave and be surrounded by the magnificent glow worms as they light up around you.

If you fancy a bit more of a thrill, head underground in raft tubes through the rapids, down waterfalls, and float below the glow worms whilst black water rafting . You can either head down the Black Labyrinth route or the Black Abyss route ; either way, you will be in for a thrilling time.

From Picton, you can enjoy activities like relaxing by the beach, enjoying the Edwin Fox Museum, or even trekking part of the Queen Charlotte Track. You can then head down to Blenheim in the Marlborough region and enjoy wine tours and trails, and learn about the winemaking process.

Due to there being no light pollution in Tekapo , it is an amazing spot for stargazing. You will have the chance to see the stars like never before and with incredible clarity.

Considered the heart of the Marlborough Sounds and built around a sheltered harbour, the picturesque port town of Picton is home to great cafés, restaurants, galleries and specialty boutique stores. And with less than 5,000 locals you're bound to meet a few friendly faces.

Picton is home to many excellent tramping and cycling trails including the Queen Charlotte Track (opens in new window) . Although the climate is mild and generally warm, the area also has a high average rainfall so you need to be prepared and check the weather before you begin.

Green-lipped mussels are grown and harvested in abundance in the area and the small village of Havelock , just 45 minutes drive from Picton, is the gateway to the Pelorus Sounds .

Marlborough Tour Company Mail Boat tour is a super relaxing full day tour onboard a  catamaran, meandering slowly through the clear waters of the Pelorus Sounds to deliver mail and supplies to locals who live remotely in the sounds. Waiting on the jetty's you'll meet some interesting characters and hear how Kiwi ingenuity shapes the somewhat primitive life in the sounds. It's not just the locals who wait on the jetties - keep a look out for dogs, pigs, sheep and seals!

After a sleep-in and leisurely brunch, make your way to Picton Train Station (just behind Picton isite Visitor Information Centre ) ready for an early afternoon departure on the Coastal Pacific ™, one of New Zealand's great train journeys.

Leaving Picton behind, your Coastal Pacific ™ train trip begins with views of New Zealand's premium wine growing region of Blenheim, home to world-renowned Marlborough sauvignon blanc. The patchwork landscape of deep oranges and burnt yellows are thanks to the long hot days and dry weather in this region.

The Coastal Pacific™ railway's many tunnels are a major feature of the journey. The cost and difficulty of building these 20 tunnels resulted in the railway taking more than 80 years to complete.

The tunnels are clustered in the cliffs that rise either side of Kaikōura's  vast plains. The majority of these tunnels are between  Ōkiwi  Bay and Claverley.

Continuing on, you'll notice the landscape becomes lush as the train tracks cross into the northern Canterbury region.

Lake Grassmere is an interesting sight, the pastel pink and whites you'll see is  the result of natural salt production. Seawater, fresh from the Pacific Ocean, is pumped into the lake and into  crystallisation ponds until the salt is harvested. The pink to purple colour of the crystallisation ponds is caused by natural microscopic green algae that change to pink in the high salt concentration. The same phenomena that gives the Red Sea its name.

Continuing south, keep a look out for the Ohau Point Seal Colony. Often, hundreds of New Zealand fur seals can be spotted sunning themselves on the rocks or frolicking amongst the seaweed. The train travels close enough to the ocean to see the seals with the naked eye.

One of the most spectacular moments of the Coastal Pacific ™ journey is at Mangamaunu Bay. Here the train rounds the southern end of the bay delivering exceptional close-up views of the  Kaikōura mountain ranges.  Mangamaunu Bay is also one of the best surf beaches in New Zealand and during peak surf conditions, the bay is so popular that surfers queue up to take turns.

In the late afternoon the Coastal Pacific ™ arrives into   Kaikōura Train Station (also known as the Whaleway Station) which is on the waterfront in the same building as Whalewatch Kaikōura.

Accommodation options are ten minute walk from the station in the town centre or a short drive away.

Kaikōura is a base for wildlife experiences of all kinds – it’s also a great place to eat crayfish (in Māori language 'kai' means food, 'kōura' means crayfish).

Kaikōura's environment is truly spectacular, the village is sandwiched between the rugged seaward Kaikōura Range and the Pacific Ocean. In winter the mountains are covered with snow, adding to the drama of the landscape.

The special talents of the area are marine mammal encounters. Whales, fur seals and dolphins live permanently in the coastal waters. Whale watching trips leave the town several times a day and the local seal colony is always entertaining.

Kaikōura Canyon, where many wildlife encounters take place, is deep and open and the sea conditions can change quickly. When the seas are too rough, head to the clouds and whale watch from above with Wings over Whales .

There are also plenty of cafés, restaurants and shops to explore and of course you should try succulent Kaikōura crayfish fresh off the boat at Nins Bin crayfish caravan (opens in new window) , at a waterfront restaurant or  Kaikōura Seafood BBQ (opens in new window) .

With most of the day free, it's then time to head back to the Whaleway Station in the afternoon to board the Coastal Pacific™ bound for Christchurch.

Heading south, the train travels over the Kahutara River Bridge which stretches 241 metres long. Enjoy stunning views of the Kahutara River below, the Pacific Ocean on the left and the Seaward  Kaikōura  Ranges on the right.

Okarahia Viaduct, at 21 metres high and 115 metres long, is an unexpected gem and a beautiful sight to behold.  Views of the viaduct appear suddenly from behind trees near Claverley Road and you're treated to stunning views of the Pacific Ocean on the left and tree-lined Okarahia Valley on the right.

Travelling on to the north-eastern tip of the Canterbury Plains (which span a massive 200 kilometres from north to south) the Coastal Pacific™ is now sharing the land with the TranzAlpine™ whose main territory is the Southern Alps. The TranzAlpine™ follows the valleys of the Waimakariri River while the Coastal Pacific™ crosses over the river near Kaiapoi.

Historically, the train route of the Coastal Pacific™ began as two separate railways; one from Christchurch to  Kaikōura and another from Picton to Blenheim. Connecting the two railways together was impossible with the Kaikōura Ranges in the way. The only option was to build the train route around the coast, creating a scenic train journey on the very edge of the world.

As the Coastal Pacific™ pulls into Christchurch Railway Station (sometimes known as Addington Station) your train journey comes to an end just after sunset.

Grab a taxi from the station and head into the central city where you'll find many options for acccomodation.

Christchurch is an interesting city so it's worth spending a few nights exploring.

If your next stop is the West Coast consider the scenic journey through the Southern Alps onboard the TranzAlpine ™  which departs from Christchurch Station.

Train in New Zealand

Best railway journeys in New Zealand: three classic long-distance routes

By New Zealand specialist Joe

New Zealand’s railway journeys hold their own against some of the world’s greatest routes, certainly in terms of scenery. They transport you right into the heart of the country’s mountain ranges, winelands and volcanic plateaus.

They can also make for a comfortable, relaxed interlude in what can often be a busy trip. For me, rail travel in New Zealand doesn’t supplant exploring by car, but it does offer a welcome break from driving. Plus, all journeys can be incorporated (with a little creativity) into most New Zealand tours .

Of course, it’s equally possible for trains to form the focal point of an itinerary, such as this 20-day trip suggestion for exploring New Zealand without a car .

The country does have a handful of small, privately owned heritage railways geared toward sightseers. But, I’m spotlighting New Zealand’s three major scenic rail journeys, which are operated by the state (KiwiRail). All of them, for various reasons, are also civil engineering masterpieces in their own right.

The TranzAlpine, South Island

Distance: 224 km (139 miles) journey time: four and a half hours route: christchurch to greymouth return, daily.

Joe on the TranzAlpine

The grand doyen of New Zealand’s scenic rail journeys, the TranzAlpine splices across South Island from east to west (or west to east, if you embark in Greymouth). It follows a route laid down in the 1860s by hardy stagecoaches carrying provisions to west-coast gold prospectors.

Most voyagers begin in Christchurch , a city steadily piecing itself together post-earthquake. The first few minutes of the journey take you through placid suburbs of wooden bungalows. But, before long, the train is streaking out across the low-lying Canterbury Plains.

After an hour or so of patchworked farmland dotted with sheep and cattle (and red deer, which are commercial livestock in New Zealand), the foothills of the Southern Alps start to smudge the horizon.

A silvery braided river, the Waimakariri, opens out in a gorge. The train traverses steel-girder bridges and viaducts over more gorges to climb into the snowy shanks of the Southern Alps proper.

You’ll catch sight of alpine lakes, deep V-shaped valleys, beech forests, and mist-wreathed mountains before the train plateaus onto a high, grassy plain of tussock and gorse.

You then have the opportunity to disembark briefly and stretch your legs on the platform of Arthur’s Pass, once a village of railway tunnel builders and now an outpost for the surrounding Arthur's Pass National Park . Here, you might spot a kea or two — fiercely intelligent (and famously pugnacious) native alpine parrots. Guard your lunch closely.

From Arthur’s Pass, you plunge into the Otira Tunnel, one of New Zealand’s longest, before emerging into the railway town of the same name.

Another river, the Taramakau, comes into view, and the train crosses this waterway several times on its final leg into Greymouth. Look out for waterfalls lacing more mountainsides, and the scars of long-disused mines.

What I like most about this journey (scenery aside) is how the train curls around several long bends, meaning you can look back from the open-air observation car and take a photograph of the carriages unspooling behind you, framed by mountains.

That said, some of the best moments for me have been spent at my seat, camera switched off and coffee in hand (there’s a great buffet car), simply taking it all in.

Once in Greymouth, you’re at the gateway to the west-coast glaciers (which you can explore via heli-hike ). From here, you can also embark on one of New Zealand’s greatest drives , the route from Haast to Queenstown, by way of more waterfalls, estuaries, podocarp rainforest, lakes and viewpoints over the Tasman Sea.

The Coastal Pacific, South Island

Distance: 347 km (216 miles) journey time: five and a half hours route: picton to christchurch via blenheim and kaikoura, daily.

Picton to Christchurch line

This is a great option if you like the idea of stepping right off the Interislander Ferry from Wellington and being immediately whisked off to see two of the standout highlights of South Island from the comfort of a railway carriage. Even your luggage can be automatically transferred from the ferry to the train.

You leave Picton’s  secluded wooded inlet, passing through a valley, and before you know it you’re zipping through a flat landscape of primped and polished vineyards.

The main delight of this train is the ability for you to hop on and off, breaking your journey for a night or more. I’d recommend spending a day or so touring the wineries around Blenheim , the heart of New Zealand’s sauvignon blanc country.

Back on board, you’re greeted by grassy hills, distant snow-capped mountains, and a saline lake, Grassmere, which often glows pink from a type of algae.

Then you reach the ocean. The tracks run along the shoreline, and they’ve been extensively rebuilt among the landslides caused by earthquakes. At times you’re sandwiched between waves and mountains. Look closely at the rocks along the shore, which are often littered with recumbent seals.

Break your journey again at Kaikoura, the country’s premier whale-watching spot. You can even admire them from the air, as we highlight in our guide to observing New Zealand’s wildlife .

Shortly after leaving Kaikoura , the train sweeps inland and travels through lustrously green hills and valleys before reaching its terminus, Christchurch. The train station is housed on a modest industrial estate, but around it lie the remains of Addington Railway Workshops, where many of New Zealand’s locomotives were built.

From Christchurch, you can easily link up with the TranzAlpine, as described above.

The Northern Explorer, North Island

Distance: 680 km (423 miles) journey time: ten and a half hours route: auckland to wellington, three times a week.

Makatote Viaduct

The Northern Explorer doesn’t seem to get as much international press as the TranzAlpine, but I think it’s just as rewarding. That is, if you’re interested in seeing a landscape punctuated by chargrilled-looking volcanoes as opposed to alpine vistas.

This train cuts through the volcanic heartland of North Island on its route from city to city, taking in both coastline and rainforest. As you near Wellington , you can look out over to the densely forested lump of Kapiti Island, a predator-free haven for native birdlife.

The engineering feats that made such a journey possible are, for me, just as impressive as the scenery.

The route takes you on the North Island Main Trunk Railway, completed in 1908. Its chef d’oeuvre is the Raurimu Spiral (constructed 1905-1908), which makes light work of an otherwise unbreachable incline. On board, you can see how the track loops back on itself.

You’ll also cross the heritage-listed Makatote Viaduct, once one of the world’s highest, before reaching your journey’s end.

You start off in gently pastoral farming country around Hamilton. The drama comes when you enter Tongariro National Park . You can gaze through the train’s large panoramic windows at a trio of volcanoes — Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro — their slopes the shade of burnt toffee. Sometimes they’re topped with snow.

You have the option to stop here for a night or two to explore Mount Ruapehu on two wheels . More traditionally, you can go hiking. I recommend a guided walk on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing , where fumaroles, neon-green sulphur lakes and lava formations await.

Life on board is comfortable: carriages are well-appointed and the ride itself is incredibly smooth (due to a very advanced suspension system). The food is excellent, too, and there’s a choice of salads, platters and wraps.

One note on this journey: the Northern Explorer complements, rather than replaces, exploring the North Island by car for first-time visitors (otherwise, you’d miss too much).

It works particularly well in a North-Island-focused itinerary , as you can wend your way south on the train and then pick up a rental car to head back to Auckland. This lets you go back and explore North Island big hitters, such as Rotorua and Napier, at your own pace.

These Are The Three Most Scenic Train Journeys To Take In New Zealand

Journey across New Zealand on three epic train journeys through some of the country's most dramatic landscapes.

  • The Northern Explorer is the longest train ride in New Zealand, taking around 12 hours to journey from Auckland to Wellington. It showcases charming green hills and farmland landscapes.
  • The Coastal Pacific, running from Picton to Christchurch, offers stunning coastal landscapes and passes through Marlborough wine region. It takes approximately 6 hours to complete the journey.
  • The TranzAlpine is considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world. It travels from Christchurch to Greymouth, featuring lush rainforests, snow-capped mountains, and picturesque landscapes. The journey takes 5 hours and passes through Arthur's Pass.

New Zealand is famous for its breathtaking natural scenery and one of the relaxing ways to explore the country is by train. In New Zealand, most of the old passenger train routes have been discontinued as cars and airplanes have taken over.

Still, in New Zealand, there are three excellent luxury and scenic train journeys to take: the Northern Explorer, the TranzAlpine, and the Coastal Pacific. Together they journey from the large northern city of Auckland to the small South Island West Coast town of Greymouth. These train journeys (and especially the TranzAlpine) can be counted among the most scenic train rides in the world. Here's what to know about the top-ranked train trips in New Zealand.

The Northern Explorer

Take the passenger train from auckland to wellington.

The Northern Explorer is the main passenger train service from Auckland (the largest city) to Wellington (the capital city) on the North Island. The Northern Explorer is by far the longest train ride, although it is arguably less dramatic than its South Island counterpart. Most of the route is characterized by charming rolling green hills and farmland.

The Northern Explorer traces the historic North Island Main Trunk railway completed over a hundred years ago. This heritage railroad took some 30 years to build, and it meant people didn't need to take several days of treacherous sailing around the North Island to get from city to city.

  • Terminuses: Auckland & Wellington
  • Length: 648 kilometers or 402 miles
  • Duration: Around 12 Hours
  • Cost: From NZD 239 (approx. $142 USD)

The Northern Explorer has been reimagined as a scenic train journey for tourists. The train journey is 648 kilometers (402 miles) and takes around 12 hours. Consider stopping off along the way and exploring the dramatic volcanic lands of the central North Island at Mount Ruapehu and the Tongariro National Park.

Along the way, visitors see some of the most stunning landscapes of the North Island including the Ruapehu, Tongariro, and Ngauruhoe — three of the most significant volcanoes in New Zealand. Gaze out at rolling green rural farmland, lush native bush, and much more.

What To Expect When Visiting Wellington: The Windiest City In The World

Coastal pacific, see the sea from picton to christchurch.

Journeying down to Wellington and taking the ferry across to the South Island, tourists can take the Coastal Pacific. The Coastal Pacific runs from the port town of Picton in the northern South Island to Christchurch — the main city of the South Island.

  • Terminuses: Picton (Ferry Connection With Wellington) & Christchurch
  • Duration: 6 Hours
  • Cost: From NZD $177 (approx. $106 USD)

Soon after leaving Picton, the Coastal Pacific runs through New Zealand's largest and most famous wine region - Marlborough (internationally acclaimed for its Sauvignon Blanc wine). While in New Zealand, explore some of the country's boutique wineries and sample its southern wines.

On the Coastal Pacific, visitors see some of the most dramatic coastal landscapes with mountains flowing into the sea. Stop over at Kaikoura and enjoy New Zealand's best place for whale watching (including sperm whales).

Kaikoura is also a hotspot for seeing dolphins and fur seals. Spot hundreds of New Zealand fur seals relaxing on the coast and some of the most rugged coastal landscapes in New Zealand.

A great yet lesser-explored spot in New Zealand is the coast's wild catlins , which are home to various wildlife and offer excellent views.

The Coastal Pacific takes around 6 hours and passes through 22 tunnels and over 175 bridges.

Take One Of The New Zealand's Instagrammable Picture With Milford Sound's Bowen Falls

Tranzalpine, take a scenic trip to "nowhere".

The TranzApline arguably offers the most dramatic scenery of any train ride in New Zealand and is counted among the great train journeys in the world. Whereas the Northern Explorer and Coastal Pacific connect the three main cities in New Zealand, the TranzApline is something of a train to nowhere.

  • Terminuses: Christchurch & Greymouth
  • Length: 224 kilometers or 139 miles
  • Duration: 5 Hours
  • Cost: From NZD $239 (approx. $143 USD)

The TranzAlpine runs across the South Island from Christchurch through the Southern Alps to the West Coast town of Greymouth. The landscapes are characterized by lush rainforests, snow-capped mountains, lakes, braided rivers, and rich farmlands around Christchurch. The region around Arthur's Pass is famous and boasts some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country.

The full 224-kilometer (139-mile) journey takes around 5 hours and it passes through 19 tunnels and over 4 viaducts. See how the South Island changes radically from the green coastal plains of the East Coast near Christchurch to the rugged mountainous interior to the lush rain forests of the West Coast.

The journey takes five hours, but visitors should stop off at Arthur's Pass deep in the Southern Alps along the way. Here, explore some of the South Island's most dramatic scenery.

Visitors can just take a day trip to Arthur's Pass from Christchurch or can stay there for a night or two before completing the train journey.

Besides these three epic train journeys, there are plenty of shorter scenic train rides to enjoy in New Zealand such as the Inlander from Dunedin that discovers the gold rush heritage of the region.

The best way to see New Zealand is by riding the rails. There is no other way you can traverse into untouched country, see wild animals in their natural habitat and immerse yourself in all the biomes that New Zealand boasts. New Zealand is one of the most arresting and breathtaking places on Earth. Pick from one of these exciting train trips and build an itinerary for a trip that will be as fantastic as the views you will be witnessing.

The Northern Explorer

The Northern Explorer train trip is a full, one-day journey that is 423 miles and will take nearly 12 hours to complete. Leave bright and early from either Auckland or Wellington and arrive just before dinner time, ready to explore a fabulous city and its surroundings.

Northern Explorer Train

The Northern Explorer will show you the best of the North Island as it travels South through the heart of the island, negating the need to make the ocean trek down the coast from Auckland to Wellington as was the case before the route was completed in 1908.

A four to six day treacherous journey fraught with hazards used to be the only way to get to these two populous cities so long ago. Thanks to the vision on Julius Vogel, a thirty-year, $8.5 million endeavor brought superhuman engineering feats and modern technology together to build one of the most astounding transportation projects of its time.

The Northern Explorer winds through volcanic lands both extinct and active, riparian environments, gorges that caused huge viaducts and bridges to be built, grass and farmlands, lush rainforests and small towns of every shape, size and charm. Taking this train will introduce you to the beauty of New Zealand and all the biomes that represent such a dynamic country.

Train Amenities

Until 2012, the Northern Explorer used the old style 1930’s carriages that weren’t quite as comfortable. Today, You will travel in style in a modern, panoramic sightseeing carriage that makes the most of your spectacular view.

Seats are aligned in groups of two or four with some seating around a table. Remember, if you would like to request a certain seating arrangement for a group of four, you must contact KiwiRail to request your reservation preference. It is not guaranteed, but you may have a greater chance of getting the assigned seat you are desiring by this request. The legroom at your seat is more than ample and you have plenty of room for your unchecked, lightweight, carry-on luggage.

When you are not tucked away, enjoying the view from your seat, you can take a walk to the open-air carriage that is perfect for photography and getting close to the sights, sounds and feeling of nature. There is nothing like gazing out at the stunning countryside that surrounds you and feeling the rush of wind flowing passed you.

The TranzAlpine

Imagine exploring the Southern Alps of New Zealand as you travel in style, sipping on your glass of Sauvignon Blanc. With the TranzAlpine train , all of these dreams can come true as you traverse the width of the country in style and comfort. You know an excursion that is on every Kiwi’s list has got to be good. Bring your binoculars, your good camera and a sense of adventure as you take one of the best train trips on the planet.

This 139-mile, 5 hour trip starts in Christchurch or Greymouth or vice versa. Depending on what city you choose to disembark from, you can explore and enjoy all that the city has to offer before you get on the train. When you get to your destination, make sure you add time to your itinerary to get to know your hosting city and the entertaining things the are to do.

Tranzalpine Train

The TranzAlpine train was introduced in 1987 and used refurbished rolling stock for its tourist oriented passenger service. The route became so popular that the train service was voted as one of the top 10 “short” train journeys in the world. Therefore, in the 1990’s, an overhaul occur and eight air-conditioned carriages were introduced and panorama windows were added, enhancing the scenery passing you by.

After leaving Christchurch, you will cross open fields and plains that will then abruptly show your first glimpses of the snow-capped Southern Alps. Just passed the farmland and the town of Springfield, you will start to climb into the mountains. Gorges and ice blue rivers will greet you as you glide over a series of bridges and the view gets better and better. The famous “Staircase” reveals a transcending view that is unlike any other.

You will then be at the summit having climbed to 2,400 feet above sea level as the train stops at Arthur’s Station. This is the place to walk around and savor your surroundings. You are in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful national parks and you will want your camera for this experience.

Hop back on the train and enter the Otira Tunnel, which has made traversing the country possible. With its 5.3 mile long passageway tunneling through the mountains, it will then give way to another grand view of the mountains. After crossing over the river several times and finding waterfalls and cascades, you will see a series of coal mining towns that have interesting history that you will hear about on your earphones or from a knowledgeable staff member.

Five hours after you leave Christchurch on the West Coast, you will enter the beautiful town of Greymouth on the East Coast and the Tasman Sea. Take a week and explore this wonderful town, or after a spell, get back on the train and enjoy your ride back to Christchurch. The choice is yours.

The TrazAlpine train has a First Class experience for those that choose it. The Scenic Plus experience will feature carriages with extra legroom, extra wide seats and a two seats on one side and one on the other side configuration. Hosts trained in all there is to know about the route are there to serve your every whim as well as answer questions about the history, geology and topography of the route.

The perks don’t stop there as the menu is top-notch. With regionally inspired gourmet food such as grass-fed roasts of lamb, cheese platters, locally sourced wine and farewell canapés, you will want for nothing. All of this is served at your seat. You can also choose to visit the Café Car and to satisfy any other culinary needs you may have.

The Coastal Pacific

The Coastal Pacific will introduce you to the spectacular oceanic views of the Northeastern edges of the South Island in New Zealand. By way of the coast, the Coastal Pacific train skirts the wildlife laden beaches and touches the edges of the snow-capped mountains that spill into the sea. On your way from Picton to Christchurch, look for whales, dolphins and the sun bathing sea lions that call the ocean their home.

This five-hour, 216-mile journey will take you through some of the most arresting scenery that exists. Glide through the wineries and farmland of the fertile valleys of the countryside. Look for small towns along the way that exude that beautiful Kiwi charm that we hunger for on holiday as we have the adventure of a lifetime.

Christchurch New Zealand

With the success of the TranzAlpine train, a route from Picton to Christchurch was devised in order to serve travelers on the South Island coast. In 1988, the train was launched with huge success and continues to be a favorite among travelers to New Zealand and locals, alike.

It’s all about the mountains, the ocean and the fabulous scenery you will experience on this trek down the coast. From Picton to Christchurch you will see snow-capped mountains spilling into the sea, pink lakes against the backdrop of the inviting, lush hills and rich and fertile views of crops that will bring the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world.

Five hours after your journey began, you can choose to stay in your host city of either Christchurch or Picton and explore, or hop back on the train and do the scenic tour all over. However, this time the view is different in a slightly contrasting way as you make the trek back to where you started.

There is a First Class service called the Scenic Plus Class Experience. The Scenic Plus Class Experience will pamper you with all the finer things in life. Enjoy locally inspired chef’s meals served by an attentive and knowledgeable staff right at your seat. There are specialist hosts and storytellers selected for their keen awareness of the route and its history. Panoramic windows will keep the eye-popping scenery coming for hours. If you find you want some crisp mountain air, visit the open air carriage and make sure you take your camera. Enjoy wines brought from local wineries to introduce you to the pride of New Zealand in the form of a perfectly fermented grape.

These three train trips can be taken separately or as one amazing trip that will top all of your trips previously taken. You will start in Auckland on the North Island and subsequently take all three trains until you make it to the south end of the South Island in Milford Sound. Experience all the grandeur of all three routes and traverse the entirety of the country. This 15-day journey will spoil you with the best food and drink available as well as impeccable service.

Whatever trip you choose or how you arrange your itinerary, a train trip exploring the incredible country of New Zealand will be one of your top excursions ever experienced.

You Can Now See New Zealand by Train With These New KiwiRail Tours

Your new New Zealand journey begins in 2023

best rail journeys new zealand

New Zealand’s state-owned rail service recently launched a tourism arm that provides travelers with packaged rail tours on three of KiwiRail’s routes.

Tours on the Northern Explorer Train include itineraries and stops, predictably, on the North Island, between Auckland and Wellington . Coastal Pacific Train journeys cover  South Island destinations like Kaikoura, known for its stunning marine life, and Christchurch, a traveler favorite. Itineraries along the TranzAlpine Train take travelers across the South Island from coast to coast, serving up breathtaking landscapes along the way. Depending on the tour, you may also find yourself riding the Interisland Ferry or jumping on a bus south of Christchurch.

Tours range from one day to 17 days and cover destinations on both islands.

Multi-day tours will give travelers two options, depending on their travel style. Both styles will include an experienced guide leading the tour group for the duration of the journey. (It’s worth noting that these tours include overnight stays in hotels, not on the trains.)

Classic tours, ranging from six to 15 days, take travelers to staple destinations like Wellington or Auckland. Designed with an independent traveler in mind, classic tours take care of the main outline of a trip—accommodations, transfers, and visitor experiences—but also offer built-in free time. Customization includes optional add-on experiences, so you get maximum freedom and flexibility.

Signature Tours range between six and 17 days and are designed for travelers looking for an experience where nearly everything has been taken care of and experienced tour professionals manage the day-to-day.

New shorter break tours between two to four days have also been announced. These tours will focus on getting travelers off the beaten track to explore some of New Zealand’s most unique experiences, such as staying overnight in the independent republic, Whangamomona; whale watching and diving; wine tasting in Marlborough, New Zealand’s most famous wine region; and hiking volcanoes.

Consider these new rail packages as the ultimate tours with a view, in one of the world’s most scenic countries. To look at the full selection of tours, visit the Greater Journeys New Zealand website.

While it would be easy to focus on all the luxuries found inside, the real highlight of this journey is the incredible landscapes to be found outside – which include Ruby Canyon, Mount Logan and Mount Garfield. To maximize the views, the train only runs during the day and features oversized windows and glass-domed coaches. There are also options to start or end in Salt Lake City or Las Vegas if you’d like a little time to explore these destinations.

City of New Orleans, Chicago, Illinois to New Orleans, Louisiana

Amtrak’s City of New Orleans  is a popular choice for those wishing to explore the rich history and culture of Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans. Trains typically leave the Windy City at 8pm, trundling through Illinois and Kentucky by night and gliding into Tennessee as the sun rises. Be sure to stop off in Memphis to wander through the homeland of blues, rock n’ roll and soul music, as well as paying a visit to Elvis’ former home.

After leaving Memphis, the journey continues through Mississippi and Louisiana, where you can gaze out at cypress swamps teeming with alligators and birds. Finally, it arrives in NOLA at 3.47pm. Carriage options are the same as those offered on other Amtrak sleeper services, with coach class tickets starting from around $110 and roomettes starting from $421 for solo passengers or $596 for two.

The Canadian, Vancouver to Jasper, Canada

VIA Rail’s overnight service between Vancouver and Jasper certainly doesn't scrimp on impressive scenery. What’s more, it’s a fraction of the price of the famous Rocky Mountaineer service. The 19-hour trip starts at reasonable C$156 (US$122) per passenger for a reclining seat in Economy, or C$527 (US$413) for a two-person cabin in Sleeper Class.

<p>Trains depart Vancouver at 3pm each day, gliding away from the city’s gleaming skyscrapers and towards British Columbia’s breathtaking mountains and lakes. Stopping at Kamloops just after midnight, the journey continues along through eastern BC and into Alberta (be sure to wake up early to see the Rockies at sunrise). Finally, you’ll arrive in Jasper at 11am the following day. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and crystal-clear lakes, this laid-back town is the ideal base for exploring the Rockies and Jasper National Park.</p> <p><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/123746/canadas-most-jawdropping-views?page=1"><strong>Now discover Canada's most jaw-dropping views</strong></a></p>

Seating and carriage options are the same as those offered on VIA Rail’s The Canadian, although there’s no Prestige Class option. Economy tickets start at around $107, while Sleeper Plus tickets start from $371 for a cabin for two. As for food, those in Sleeper class can enjoy a complimentary three-course meal accompanied by Canadian wines, or there’s a good selection of snacks and light meals available for Economy passengers.

Napa Valley Wine Train, Napa to St Helena, California

What could be better than drifting past emerald-green vineyards with a glass of wine in hand? Perhaps doing so on one of Napa Valley Wine Train's  unique vintage carriages, which travel on a 36-mile (58km) there-and-back trip from Downtown Napa to St Helena on an original 1864 rail line. The carriages, with their opulent velvet-upholstered seats, mahogany paneling and brass, have been sensitively restored to evoke the glamor of vintage train travel.

<p>Offering the perfect combination of history, stunning landscapes and (of course) great wine, there's a range of packages on offer, from half-a-day winery tours with tastings to on-board dining experiences and special events, like the Murder Mystery dinner theater option. As you might expect, food and wine options aboard are ultra-opulent, with most packages offering multi-course gourmet meals and complimentary private-label wines. Needless to say, all of this doesn’t come cheap – prices are only available on application. </p>

<p>Skirting through some of New Mexico’s finest scenery, the tantalizingly named <a href="https://skyrailway.com/">Sky Railway</a> is just as fantasy-filled as you’d imagine. The journey is made all the more enticing by the fact this 141-year old heritage route was recently saved by a group of rail enthusiasts (<em>Game of Thrones</em> author George RR Martin among them). Since its revival in late 2021, it’s been given a new lease of life as a family-friendly adventure trip.</p>

Sky Railway, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Skirting through some of New Mexico’s finest scenery, the tantalizingly named Sky Railway is just as fantasy-filled as you’d imagine. The journey is made all the more enticing by the fact this 141-year old heritage route was recently saved by a group of rail enthusiasts ( Game of Thrones author George RR Martin among them). Since its revival in late 2021, it’s been given a new lease of life as a family-friendly adventure trip.

There are several packages to choose from – all of which depart from and return to Santa Fe – offering a wide range of themes, from culinary experiences to an opportunity to a journey back in time to the days of the Wild West. Guests can even join a murder mystery game or board the StarGazer Express at night to take in the glorious celestial show the Galisteo Basin offers. Ticket prices start from around $59 for the 2.5-hour Santa Fe Scenic route.

Denali Star, Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska

Ditch the car and opt for a more climate-friendly journey through one of America’s most beautiful (and least-visited) national parks. The Alaska Railroad's flagship train  Denali Star embarks on a 12-hour ride between Anchorage and Fairbanks via Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali. Along the 365-mile (587km) route, the train rushes past rivers and mountains and offers expansive panoramas of Hurricane Gulch from the top of a 296-foot (90.2m) bridge.

Check out Alaska's most incredible sights

Of course, you’ll want to leave longer than a day to take it all in. Passengers can usually combine their train journeys with day trips in Talkeetna, an excursion in Denali National Park or even plan a multi-day itinerary with overnight stays along the way. In addition to the standard stops, the train will provide a service between Talkeetna and Hurricane. Trains run between May and September each year and tickets start at $259 for the full distance.

Copper Canyon train, Los Mochis to Chihuahua City, Mexico

This nine-hour trip between Los Mochis, Sinaloa and Chihuahua City, Chihuahua, has rightly gained a reputation as one of the most epic rail journeys in the world. The famous Copper Canyon through which it travels is nothing short of magical: think dramatic gorges, towering peaks and historic colonial towns. It’s possible to travel in both directions, but we’d advise setting off from Los Mochis so you get to see the most stunning scenery (much of which is at the beginning of the route) before the sun sets.

There are two providers which offer trains through the Copper Canyon – the Chepe Regional and the Chepe Express – but the latter is significantly quicker and more luxurious. There are departures from Los Mochis on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with one-way tickets starting at $123.

Mount Washington Cog Railway, Mount Washington, New Hampshire

Dubbed “the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world”, this one-of-a-kind route traverses the steep summit of Mount Washington, reaching a 37% gradient at certain points. Located in the gorgeous Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in the heart of the White Mountains, the National Historic Engineering Landmark is certainly a fun way to discover rural New England.

Although it’s only a 3.5-mile (5.6km) journey, the train chugs by at a leisurely pace and plenty of time is allowed for soaking in the 360-degree views at the top, so the round trip takes around three hours. If the weather’s clear, travelers can see five states from this vantage point, as well as Canada and the Atlantic Ocean. Tickets start at around $99 per person, with two daily departures at 8.30am and 3pm from May to October.

Georgetown Loop Railroad, Georgetown to Silver Plume, Colorado

Want to travel across this terrifying-looking railroad? While we admit the aptly named Devil's Gate High Bridge, which features a 100-foot (30m) drop over Clear Creek, isn’t for the faint-hearted, this thrilling experience is at the top of many rail buffs’ wish lists. It’s no surprise that when it was completed back in 1884, this circular railroad connecting Georgetown and Silver Plume was seen as an engineering marvel and attracted visitors from all over.

Today, Georgetown Loop Railroad’s legendary status endures. Between May and October, there are at least three daily departures from Devil’s Gate Depot, as well as select weekend departures from Silver Plume, costing $30.95 for adults and $24.95 for kids. You can also book a walking tour of the nearby Lebanon Silver Mine, learning about Georgetown’s long standing connection with the precious metal (it was formerly known as 'The Silver Queen of the Rockies').

Grand Canyon Railway, Williams to Grand Canyon Village, Arizona

It’s been a favorite road trip destination for decades, but you might not have thought to visit the Grand Canyon by rail. Yet this underrated (and surprisingly affordable) excursion has to be one of the most beautiful train journeys on the planet. Beginning in Williams, a small town 30 miles (48km) west of Flagstaff, Grand Canyon Railway meanders through ponderosa pine forests and open prairie, stopping at Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim before heading back to Williams.

As scenic trips go, it’s a steal. One-way fares in Pullman Class start from just $33.50, Coach Class (pictured) is $41 each way, or to take in the scenery in style you can travel in a glass-ceiling observation dome car from $94.50 each way. During the journey, passengers are encouraged to get into the spirit of the Old West and enjoy the musical entertainment, cowboy characters and other surprises onboard.

Jose Cuervo Express, Guadalajara to Tequila, Mexico

Tequila fans need look no further: we’ve found the perfect train for you. Traveling the 11-hour journey between Guadalajara and the town of Tequila, the Jose Cuervo Express allows you to taste a wide variety of tequilas while whizzing past endless agave fields, all in a highly luxurious setting. Along the way, guests will also tour a distillery to discover how the spirit is made, wander the historic streets of Tequila and see an agave harvesting demonstration.

<p>Trains depart from Guadalajara every Saturday and passengers can choose between four carriages: Express, Premium Plus, Diamond or Elite (pictured). On this luxury option, enjoy a large adults-only lounge and open bar providing a range of tequila cocktails, with decor inspired by the old-school glamor of the Orient Express. Tickets start at around $128. </p> <p><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/121327/the-worlds-most-luxurious-train-journeys?page=1"><strong>These are the world's most luxurious train journeys</strong></a></p>
