Kayaking in the La Jolla Ecological Reserve is the best way to explore the underwater world of marine life. The harmless leopard shark can be seen from atop the kayaks. The best time to spot them is from May to October, which is when they appear in the shallow, warm waters of La Jolla shores. Interested in a close underwater encounter? • MaggieR551 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Kayak and snorkel adventure! We enjoyed our tour with Josh! Very knowledgeable, flexible and helpful as was the whole team! It was the first time to snorkel and kayak for some of our group and they are excited for more! I would recommend bringing one’s own wetsuit however as it was tough to get one that fit well for all six of us and snorkeling could get a bit cold otherwise. Read more Written April 3, 2024

  • kewtexas 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Mixed Feelings I have mixed feelings about this tour… the people were great, however I feel the whole tour is misleading and borderline false advertising. We (8 people) booked the “kayak and 7 caves” tour. As mentioned by many other reviews, the waves were too rough to enter (or even go near) the caves. So we paddled to the buoy, stopped for safety instructions, then paddled to another gather area to hear more info about the shoreline and that area of ocean, then paddled to one more buoy to have the caves pointed out to us….then returned and waited our turn to paddle in to shore. I asked how often the water is “too rough” to go to the caves and our guide said “prob 50% of the time in winter months”. So, if the tour I book isn’t going to be the tour I get FIFTY percent of the time, that seems to be a bit of a scam. On the positive side… the guides were both very fun, knowledgeable, and enjoyable. They seemed very concerned for our safety, no one tipped over, they were GREAT. They said summer months are much calmer waters so I just wouldn’t do it in the winter…. Or I would wait until day-of to schedule if the cave(s) are what you want to see… and ask if the caves are being done. Also, although they do have wetsuits and lockers, they are not included in the price. Our guides (and the men) on our tour didn’t used wetsuits, but I would have completely frozen without mine! The water was chilly, but it was the cool air that went through to my bones. I short… without the caves, this was a very bland, basic, beginner-kayak tour…. If you have any kayaking experience, you would be disappointed. Read more Written December 9, 2023

No help from staff, their only concern was retrieving kayaks and paddles. Be sure to secure your glasses as the majority rolled coming back through the waves. • Katyofy 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Nice experience with the family Nice experience with the family. We did however have to wait for a long time. They made us come 1h earlier and then they were late to start, so we end up waiting for 1h30mins. Kayaks and masks were nice. My wet suit was a little worn off and didn’t keep me too warm. So if you have your own -bring it. We saw seals and birds. The visibility of the water that day wasn’t great so we didn’t see much under water. The guide was funny and friendly. We heard off someone in LA that it was Leopard Shark season in San Diego now ( today 8/16/2023) We booked it online and drove down from Huntington Beach to La Jolla Beach where I’d made the mistake ( jet lag) of booking the day after (8/17/2023) The staff were amazing in understanding my mistake and rescheduled us to go then… A special mention must go to our Guide Ora who was so patient and understanding with my 13 year old daughter who was nervous! We saw Hundreds of Stingrays and many Leopard Sharks as well as many other different fish , we both bought waterproof phone cases to take pictures, which was a bargain price as was the whole day … Thank you to all staff and especially Ora from Mike and Bella from the UK Read more Written August 16, 2023

  • jhill216 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely perfect day This experience was absolutely amazing from start to finish! The crew was super helpful getting us the gear we needed, getting the kayak launched and through the waves and getting us back in safe riding in a wild wave as they “caught” us and the kayak. Awesome team. Our guides were Hannah and Kaylen (I don’t think I’m spelling that right! Sorry man! Lol) Anyway they were the absolute best! Super friendly, awesome vibes, jokes, info, personal, could not have been happier to have gotten this pair taking us out. The ocean kayaking was awesome, there were quite a few other companies taking groups out but everything seemed pretty well planned so it didn’t cause any issues and we weren’t in each other’s way. The snorkeling was beyond beautiful!!! There were seals sooo sooo close and they swim right past you. The fish are gorgeous and so is the sea grass/ environment. I even saw a ray swimming by. The water was clear and it was a great day. I was not the strongest swimmer of the group so getting through the cave seemed the tiniest bit rushed but it was just me. I would have loved more time in that part so I guess I’ll just have to go again. Read more Written July 10, 2023

La Jolla Sea Cave Kayaks

An Unforgettable Experience

kayak tour of the 7 caves

Adventure Begins!

kayak tour of the 7 caves

Sea lions and pelicans bask on the rocks; cormorants nest on the cliff faces; giant bat rays ply the deep; brightly colored garibaldi seek shelter in the rocky shallows; schools of timid leopard sharks and rays feed in the sandy bottoms; and harbor seals eye us curiously from the kelp forests. While our ultimate destination is the magnificent sea caves that the ocean has carved from ancient cliffs, the true beauty of the area is all around the caves.

Please don't have your heart set on entering the caves as this is not always safe to do and cannot be guaranteed at any time. Instead, open your eyes to the details around you and you will never be disappointed!

We use stable sit-on-top kayaks that are very user friendly and no previous experience is required.

Please note, you will get wet ! This is part of the fun if you're prepared!

You have a choice among companies for your business. If you’re shopping for the best deal, make sure you’ve read the fine print.

We don’t charge hidden 'service fees' or charge extra for locker rental to keep your belongings safe.

Most companies limit availability at peak times for discounts like Groupon so you may find yourself unable to take advantage of the advertised discounts.

Kayaking is fun and easy! Almost anybody in reasonable health can enjoy kayaking. If you have doubts about your ability to participate, ask you doctor or give us a call.

Our kayaks have weight limits.  We can accomodate 2 people on a tandem kayak at a combined total of 475 lbs. We can accommodate a single person on a kayak to 450 lbs.

We believe that outdoor adventure should be accessible to everyone and we will make every effort to to accomodate any disability that does not interfere with safe participation in this activity. Please call us to discuss necessary accommodations. For safe participation, guests must be able to maintain a seated position on the floor with moderate lower back support for an extended period of time. If you need a little extra help to accomplish this due to a spinal cord injury, please call us as we may be able to make suitable modifications. Please note that it is unsafe to seat-belt or strap a person to a kayak. Specific issues: Deaf: all pertinent information is provided in writing. Blind: bring your own tandem paddling partner, or call us to arrange for one to be provided. Amputations: modifications available with advance notice - call us!

Our minimum age requirement is 6 years, although not all 6 year-olds will enjoy the activity, especially on days where the waves are a bit bigger.  Every kid is different, so if you are in doubt, don't hesitate to call us about current conditions and what your little one might expect. We want your kids to love their adventure on the ocean!

Children under 14 must be on a tandem kayak with a parent or guardian. Children 14-16 yrs must be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian (but may paddle their own kayak). Children 16-18 yrs may participate unaccompanied by a parent or guardian, but a parent or legal guardian must sign a liability waiver on behalf of the minor.

Children under 18 must be able to swim and adults must be comfortable floating in a PFD (life jacket) in deep water without panic.

PFD's must be worn at all times.

Essential Eligibility Criteria for Tour Participants:

  • Be at least 6 years old (Minors must be accompanied by an adult)
  • Not exceed the weight limit of the kayak (450lbs solo, and combined tandem weight)

What to Expect

Be prepared to get wet!

We launch through small surf and paddle 2-3 miles. You will exert about as much effort as walking the same distance. If you paddle a two person kayak, you will share some of the effort. You will be on the water for 90 minutes.

We will meet at our La Jolla Shores shop where you will check in, sign waivers (no one will be permitted on the tour without signing our liability waiver), and change clothes if needed. There are changing rooms and a restroom at our shop. We will outfit you with a life jacket, paddle, and helmet. If you would like a wetsuit, we have those available for rent as well. We provide complimentary lockers to leave your personal belongings in our shop during your tour.  You will be happy to have a towel and dry clothes waiting for you when you return.

After a brief introduction, you will walk with your guide(s) 3 blocks to the beach where your kayak will be waiting. There you will have a brief paddle instruction and safety talk before launching. Aside from providing lots of interesting information about this incredible Marine Protected Area, your knowledgeable guides are trained to assess the ever-changing hazards of the dynamic Pacific Ocean with the objective of keeping you safe.  We'll say it again here: we cannot guarantee your entry into the sea caves as sometimes they are simply too dangerous.  What we can guarantee is that the beauty of one of California's most diverse coastlines will be all around you. So look up at the nesting peregrine falcons and cormorantts on the cliffs, the sea lions hauled out on the stunning rock formations, the geological history recorded in them;,and scan the waters for our resident sea turtle, leopard sharks, and visiting dolphins.  You won't be disappointed!

Free parking is available on the side streets around the shop. The spots marked “90 minutes” on Avenida de la Playa do not allow enough time.

What to Bring and Wear

  • bathing suit and/or quick-dry shorts/shirt/rash guard (spandex, nylon, polyester, "sport" blends, etc). If it's cool, a windbreaker will keep you warm, or you can rent a wetsuit ($10). We have changing rooms and a restroom in our shop and complimentory lockers for your belongings
  • Cotton clothing is discouraged (it is heavy and cold when wet) and jeans are never permitted.
  • shoes - most people choose to kayak barefoot and you can leave your footwear at our launch site. Wearing water shoes or "river" sandals is also a good choice
  • hat - optional.  You will be wearing a helmet, so not all hats will fit underneath, but ball caps and floppy sun hats usually do.
  • water - it's not necessary to take it on your tour, but be sure you're well hydrated beforehand!
  • sun screen (available for purchase at our shop).  The tops of your feet and shins are often overlooked - they will be very exposed while paddling a sit-on-top kayak.
  • If you wear glasses, it is VERY IMPORTANT to have a retainer strap! You can purchase these at our store.
  • If you are prone to sea sickness, consider taking precautions.  Over the counter medications need to be taken well in advance of your adventure.  Ginger candy may also be an effective preventative
  • You will be happy to have a towel and dry clothes waiting at our shop when you return.  We provide complimentary lockers for your personal belongings. Please leave behind anything that can't get wet or might sink to the sea floor (cell phones, pagers, wallets, car keys, non-waterproof watches, loose jewelry, non-waterproof cameras, etc). We have waterproof cases for purchase for your cell phone if you would like to take pictures of your adventure.

Undoubtedly, La Jolla is one of the best places in San Diego for a kayaking adventure. There are numerous kayak tour opportunities from hillside towns. These tours allow visitors to hit the Pacific Ocean and see unique forms of nature and wildlife.

Greg and I love kayaking in La Jolla and it is always a fun outing. It is pretty beginner friendly too, so even if you have never been in a kayak before, this is totally doable. The only tricky part is getting through the waves on the shore, but the kayaking tour guides will help you through. You will get wet though, so I recommend leaving your valuables in the provided lockers or bringing a little floating dry bag to keep your things safe. Definitely wear sunscreen and I recommend a hat and, unless you wear only swimwear, some quick-drying clothes (or bring some to change into later).

Here’s our list of the top kayak tours in La Jolla, you must check these out during your visit!

The Best La Jolla Kayak Tours

La jolla sea caves kayak tour.

This hour and a half sea cave kayak tour will take you inside the area’s caves with the help of expert tour guides. Soak up some gorgeous scenery while catching glimpses of marine life, including sea birds, sea lions, seals, even occasionally dolphins or a sea turtle.

Grab the chance to paddle through stunning kelp beds surrounding the La Jolla Ecological Reserve & Underwater Park . Bring your GoPro because you want to ensure you get some snaps of this.

The tour provides all equipment, including a life jacket, kayaks and paddles, and a wet suit if you prefer to wear one.

Morning or afternoon departure times are available, and your guide will meet you at Avenida de la Playa in La Jolla. Before you head out to the water, full training and safety procedures will be provided.

As soon as everyone is good to go, drag your boat to the sea for a great time!

La Jolla Sea Cave Kayak Tour for Two

If you’re looking for more of a private La Jolla kayak cave tour, this hour and a half excursion for two might be up your alley.

Follow your guide, who knows the La Jolla sea caves more than anyone else, as they bring you through many diverse ecological habitats.

See the likes of the wonderful Emerald Cove, the only north-facing cove in the whole state of California. Snap up the chance to get close to sea life, such as harbor seals, otters, and sea lions.

No prior experience is required on this tour. Your group of two will be shown all you need to know before heading out into sea. Use of the company’s gear and equipment is included in the price, e.g., life jackets, kayaks, etc. If you’d like to rent a wetsuit or locker, you can do so for an added fee.

Each participant must arrive at the departure location 30 minutes before to get organized. The staff members will get you ready and outfitted so it doesn’t cut into your kayaking time.

2 Hour Whale Watching Kayak Tour for Two

Now, for something a little different. This two hour sea kayaking La Jolla tour brings you to see grey whales.

Yes, you read that right. Enjoy an intimate experience for two people as you paddle your way off the coast of La Jolla in the hope of seeing grey whales. Learn about the creature’s behavior and how they live their lives while seeing La Jolla from a whole other perspective.

The tour’s meeting point will be 2261 Avenida De La Playa, La Jolla, Ca, 92037. Get there 30 minutes before to get geared up. From there you’ll head down to the beach for your safety briefing and tutorial with a certified guide. Depart from the shores and head 2 miles out to try to spot some whales.

There will be plenty of breaks along the way for you to rehydrate and explanations about the marine life. One great thing about this activity is that the company donates a percentage of every booking to Greenwave & Urban Surf 4 Kids, so your money goes toward a good cause.

Kayak Tour of the 7 Caves

Seeing the seven impressive caves of La Jolla on your own without a guide can be a difficult and dangerous task. Join this two hour La Jolla cove kayaking tour to discover the popular seven caves, including Arch Cave, Clams’ Cave, and Jim’s Cave.

Float through the water seeing places you wouldn’t be able to alone. Admire awe-inspiring sandstone formations while learning how they were created. Get up close to leopard sharks, sea lions, dolphins, and more.

Anyone who hasn’t kayaked before will get full training upon arrival. By the time you get back to shore, you’ll be a professional. All equipment needed is included: helmets, life jackets, and of course, your La Jolla kayak rental.

Leave all valuables behind before heading out to sea. You’re promised to get wet, at least from the waist down, on this tour.

Like most tours on this list, get to the meeting point 30 minutes early. Your guide will meet you at 2158 Avenida De La Playa.

La Jolla Kayak and Snorkel Tour

Why just kayak when you can snorkel as well? This two and a half hour La Jolla kayak snorkel tour is set in the Ecological Reserve, and wow, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss out on.

Kayak your way from the La Jolla shores through jaw-dropping caves before heading out to open water for snorkeling. Wave at the leopard sharks as they swim around you — don’t be frightened, they won’t harm you. Other forms of sea life can be seen, too, like rays, shovelnose guitarfish, rockfish, sea lions, and spiny lobster. You’ll feel like one of them for a couple of hours.

The sea cave kayak and snorkeling tour includes essential gear like masks, fins, paddles, etc. If you do happen to have your own snorkeling equipment, you’re allowed to bring it along and use it. Just let the company know before.

An experienced guide will be in a nearby kayak at all times in case there’s trouble with gear or you need anything.

Kayak Rental For Two People From La Jolla Shores

Escape the hustle and bustle of the San Diego lifestyle and spend time with your significant other, best friend, or child on this hour and a half double kayak tour of the La Jolla caves.

Row yourselves around the La Jolla Ecological Reserve at a pace that suits both of you. There’s no guide with you, so you can check out whatever you want.

A safety briefing will be provided before, as well as a list of locations you can and can’t visit. Arrive at the meeting point (Everyday California’s Office) 30 minutes early, your kayak and paddles will be waiting.

Depending on the time of year, kayakers may see different species of fish, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and whales. Don’t panic if you do! They’re enjoying the water as much as you are and won’t harm you.

Anyone who takes part in this La Jolla shores kayaking excursion must be a competent swimmer in case the kayak topples over when you’re out at sea alone. Unfortunately, you cannot bring the kayak inside any of the 7 caves. If you want to look inside, consider one of the other tours on this list instead.

90 Minute Kayak Rental In La Jolla

Take part in a 90 minute guided kayak tour of La Jolla. Grasp the basics of Kayaking, from steering to paddling, and see a whole new side to La Jolla you never even knew existed. Follow your guide past the breathtaking caves, charming kelp forests, and underwater canyons while listening to interesting stories and facts.

With some luck, you might see different types of dolphins that are known to congregate around certain areas. These include bottlenose dolphins, white-sided dolphins, and common dolphins.

On average, each tour covers about six miles round trip. So, you’ll be kayaking for the majority of the time. Experience isn’t necessary. If you need help, your guide will be by your side every second. When you return to shore, a scorching hot beverage will be waiting for you to warm you up.

Every participant should bring shoes which can get wet, a bathing suit or swimming shorts, sunscreen, and a strap to hold their sunglasses in case they fall into the sea. You can leave a change of clothes and valuables behind in one of the lockers provided.

There’s a minimum booking requirement of two people. The maximum number of people that can go on this tour is nine, so reserve your spot to avoid disappointment.

La Jolla kayak tours are a great way to see areas you wouldn’t be able to on a larger boat. Once you have a guide by your side, it opens up many opportunities. Plus, you know you will be completely safe wherever you go.

7 Fantastic Spots To Go Snorkeling In San Diego

S an Diego gets plenty of recognition for its idyllic beaches and rugged coastline, but many don’t give credit for its fantastic snorkeling.

It may come as a surprise to you that snorkeling in San Diego is one of the best ways to enjoy a beach visit. Colorful marine life, huge kelp beds, and sea caves are all waiting to be explored. And did you know that you can even snorkel with sharks in San Diego? Each summer, leopard sharks come to La Jolla to hatch their young and snorkeling is the best way to see them. Don’t worry, they are totally harmless. You should still keep your distance and never touch or disturb them in other ways.

We’ve created a comprehensive guide for eager snorkelers heading to San Diego. Most of the snorkeling spots are located in the neighborhood of La Jolla , but there are some San Diego snorkeling spots closer to downtown as well. This article is complete with the top snorkeling spots, must-do tours, and the best-rated equipment and everything else you might want to know about snorkeling in San Diego.

Best Spots To Go Snorkeling In San Diego

La jolla cove.

La Jolla Cove is, without a doubt, San Diego’s most famed spot for snorkeling. A title it most definitely deserves.

Part of the La Jolla Underwater Park , during summer, enhanced visibility in this underwater park allows snorkelers to swim with leopard sharks and vibrant garibaldi fish. The sea lions which lounge by the rocks may even join you!

You can rest easy knowing that lifeguards are permanently stationed here, making it a safe spot to explore for confident swimmers.

You can find paid parking at the nearby La Jolla Financial Building. For those who arrive early enough, you should be able to snag free street parking for up to 2 – 3 hours. Don’t stay underwater too long or risk a hefty fine for overstaying your parking limits.

La Jolla Shores Beach

Staying in La Jolla but heading a bit further north is La Jolla Shores.

La Jolla Shores is a family-friendly beach where kids can get in on the snorkeling action thanks to calm conditions and shallow waters.

You have the option to bring your own gear or rent some from one of the many snorkel rental spots in the neighborhood.

Easily accessed behind the Marine Room restaurant, swimmers can dive by the kelp beds and spot the sting rays that frequent the waters.

Similar to La Jolla Cove, this area tends to get busy later in the day. Start your day early and find a space at the free parking lot right on the beachfront.

Turtle Town

There are no prizes for guessing why this spot in La Jolla’s marine sanctuary got its name. Turtle Town is home to adorable young and old sea turtles swimming alongside schools of brightly colored fish.

Known as one of San Diego’s closely guarded secrets, it’s easy to see why it’s gotten this reputation, it can be notoriously tricky to find.

Between The Marine Room restaurant and La Jolla Cove, look out for red and green kelp plants, where the turtles tend to congregate.

Due to its hard-to-reach location, this spot is best for avid snorkelers and strong swimmers. This spot isn’t recommended for little ones.

Seven Sea Caves

Yet another La Jolla snorkeling hot spot is the Seven Sea Caves. These are located just east of La Jolla Cove and consist of seven uniquely named caves that line the coast.

Join the halibut, mackerel, and rays which spend their days swimming beside caves named Clam, Shopping Cart, and Jim.

Accessed from the same entry points as Turtle Town, this is also a popular spot for swimmers and kayakers . This spot is best explored through group tours which can guide you to the safest sites. Additionally, it’s advisable to leave the younger snorkelers at home for this one.

Devil’s Slide

Close to the Seven Sea Caves is Devil’s Slide, which is a relatively challenging place for a San Diego snorkeling experience.

Though the waters are shallow, this area sits at the base of the sea cliffs, making it difficult to reach.

Small fish, like zebra perch and anchovies, can be found along the cliffside, while sea lions and rays are also commonly spotted. With a bit of luck, snorkelers can cast their eyes on horn sharks and octopuses.

If you’re not the strongest of swimmers, Devil’s Slide may not be the safest choice. Especially as it’s not the most accessible area for lifeguards.

Mission Point Beach

We’re moving away from snorkeling in La Jolla this time and heading further south towards downtown. Cue chilled-out Mission Point Park.

Located on Mission Bay, the beach here has some of the most pleasant waters for snorkeling in San Diego.

Its warm and calm conditions make it the perfect place to take the kids.

Often an underrated spot for a glimpse of marine life, you won’t have to worry about getting here early. There are plenty of free parking lots nearby.

Park up and take to the sea, where you’ll find kelp fish, senoritas, eels, and octopus.

Shell Beach And Boomer Beach

It’s clear by now that La Jolla is home to the majority of San Diego’s most desirable snorkeling spots. For this reason, it can be difficult to avoid the crowds which flock to the most well-known locations.

Just north of Children’s Pool Beach are the quieter Shell and Boomer beaches. These spots have no stairs down to the shore, requiring a little climbing. But the result is a much more peaceful beach when you get to the end.

Swim out until you reach the kelp beds, where you can swim amongst friendly sea lions and countless sardines.

If luck is on your side, you may cross paths with a migrating grey whale or even see harbor seals chilling out.

Due to the challenging climb down and the rougher seas, snorkeling here is only recommended for experienced swimmers.

Snorkeling Tours In San Diego
