Venice, Florence and Rome escorted small group by train

Costantino made this trip absolutely amazing!! He made us feel like we were VIP’s. Our group bonded together because Costantino was a great leader. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, fun, and knew all the best places to take us and recommend for us. He went above and beyond for each and every person in our group. He also connected to everyone individually. He recommended we all have dinner together on our last night which was perfect. We also got together for breakfast to say goodbye even though he wasn’t staying at our hotel and he always walked us back to make sure everyone was safe. I will highly recommend this tour because it was very good, but more importantly because Costantino made it great!!!!

Train tours Italy: Venice, Florence, Rome, Sorrento by train

We loved the small group by train. Once we got to the first hotel they did all the moving of our luggage and it would be waiting in our room at the next hotel. I would highly recommend to arrive a day or 2 before the tour starts to get rested. We booked 2 days on our own to see Venice, the one day walking tour is not enough for this beautiful city. I would also recommend an extra day at the end in Sorrento, there are so many wonderful day trips. Adding an extra day would have given us a relax day before the long trip home the next day. Regarding tours, get them in advance to skip the line. Don't wait for the tour to start to decide. You may not be able to get in. If this company doesn't offer the tour you want, go find it with another company. On the first day in Venice the mention of local tasting, is a full dinner. It was wonderful. Several people were tired from travel and opted out of the walking tour, they didn't know it included dinner. The dinners should be detailed out in the Itinerary. I had to ask for a list of tour descriptions and prices. I was given the wrong one. As I tried to book I was given a shorter one that was what was being offered. The list should be provided as soon as the deposit is received.

Reviews of murano tours.

Excellent service from all of the Croisi crew. First class food. Very relaxing. Would definitely cruise with CroisiEurope again and would book with Tour Radar.
Ourfearless tourleader Annamaria did an outstanding job. She gave us 110% at all times and rolled with the punches from train derailments to explaining to our group the optimal way to get 10 pounds of touring in a five pound bag and while still keeping everybody happy. Annamarias' experience combined with her local touring associates in Venice , Florence, Sienna and Rome gave us as much depth of information, history, and local flavor as possible within our alloted schedule. The best thing about the walking tour is the waistline didn't take a hit in spite of the occassions of overindulgence. Great folks Great memories Phil & Sue from The Mitten
Everything was great. Hotels were very good, meals were good but not outstanding. Luggage pickup & high speed trains were excellent made getting from city to city enjoyable & super easy. Most of the tour guides in the city were very good especially Pompeii & Siena not so much Florence. I can’t say enough about how great our tour leader was. Annabelle was super accommodating, always there for us, whatever we needed, no matter what it was. I had some physical limitations and she was always helpful to my wife and me. I was very sick the last 2 days in Sorrento & Annabelle helped my wife to get to the pharmacy to get some medicine which made it able for me to get better & able to get home. Annabelle made the trip incredible. Suellen & Jack Gauthier

Ultimate Self-Guided Murano Island Walking Tour [UPDATED 2022]

morano tours 2022

Murano  is a cluster of adorable little islands located just north of Venice’s main island. Murano was one of my favourite places when I travelled to  Venice . It felt like you were escaping the main island’s hustle and bustle for a quiet, artistic borough. Even though Murano is touristy in its own right, this island is nevertheless a little refuge full of real treasures. The island is littered with darling canals and charming townhouses but is best known for its  glass artisans .

morano tours 2022

History of Glass in Murano

When Venice was first built, the city had a great need for glass mosaics. Inspired by Byzantine art and architecture mosaics, the grand Basilica of San Marco wanted its own mosaic cathedral of glass. A church covered floor to ceiling in glasswork to dazzle anyone who entered. This enormous endeavour required millions and millions of pieces of glass to complete. Glass blowing was a dangerous business, especially inside a cramped island-like town like Venice. The furnaces could get up to 15,000 degrees Celcius. With houses being so close, a fire that got out of control could spell disaster for the city. Not only that, the dozens of burning furnaces meant the temperature in the city would rise greatly when they were in production.

morano tours 2022

So, in the 12th century, they moved the glassworkers over to the islands of Murano. There, they were able to build larger studios with huge furnaces that multiple companies could share. But there was another reason for the move. This was to ensure the secrets of the great Murano glass didn’t get out! Glass artists were practically locked away on the island. The  Serenissima  (Venetian Republic) needed to ensure no one else could just easily visit without being noticed. Spies were prevalent, and glasswork was a lucrative business. By keeping everyone together, the government felt they could better control their movements and who they spoke to about what! Who knew pretty things could be such a sinister business?

Glass Guilds

On the islands, glassworkers were organized into different guilds. Each guild had a kind of union that oversaw their living conditions and day-to-day work. Businesses to support the workers began to grow around the area. These artisans needed to be fed and entertained. Keeping them happy was of the utmost importance to ensure they didn’t run off to another country. Many original families who started their businesses in Murano are still there. While some new modern techniques have been employed today, many of the original ways of doing things remain unchanged. Stepping onto the island truly is like stepping back in time.

Practical Information

How to get there.

From the north edge of the main island of Venice, a Vaporetto only takes 23 minutes to reach Murano Island. Take lines 4.1 and 4.2 from the  Fondamente Nove  dock. If you want to get to Murano from the  Santa Lucia Railroad Station , take Line 3 directly to Murano. This trip takes just short of half an hour. Wherever you come into the city, get off at the  Murano Museo  Vaporetto stop. This dock is located right near our first stop on tour.

Cost of Transport

If you already have a multi-day travel card for the public transport system in Venice, you can simply scan your card and jump on the boat. If you haven’t purchased a travel card, you can buy a one-way ticket for €7,50. But I HIGHLY recommend the travel card if you’re planning on doing any kind of sightseeing.

When to Visit

Murano is a beautiful place to visit almost the entire year. But in August, many factories closed for the summer holidays. If you can avoid travelling during this time, you should, as many spots, even in Venice, will be closed for the August holidays. If August is your only option for travel, be sure to call or check the websites to double-check if they have any special summer hours or opening times. Or make alternative plans so you aren’t caught off guard when you arrive to find a “closed” sign on the door.

morano tours 2022

“Free” Factory Tours

Don’t take a “ free boat and factory tour ” from the mainland or your hotel. Often these tours will tote “free” transport to and from Murano. And they all offer another “ free ” factory tour. But often these tours  aren’t  free at all. Once you arrive at the shop, the salesmen put immense pressure on you to buy something. Many guilt you into buying by referencing how they gave you a free trip to Murano, and you basically “owed” them.

Usually, the company mentions these are “ special discount prices .” Still, repeatedly, they are anything but and are huge rip-offs. After buying the pieces, they’ll quickly whisk you off back to the island, so you don’t have time to shop around and compare their inflated prices. I truly hate these scams since the price of the boat to Murano is so cheap, and it’s incredibly easy to do it on your own.

morano tours 2022

Shopping for Murano Glass

Murano glass isn’t cheap, and that’s because of the quality. This glass isn’t mass-produced in China. It comes from artisans who have a long history of using these same hand-blown techniques as the previous generations. So you’re paying not only for the craftsmanship but also for the history. If you’ve had your heart set on picking up a piece for your home, there are some things to keep in mind.

Don’ts

Don’t feel pressured into buying anything.  The larger workshops will have so many people moving inside the shop after the demonstration that if you leave without buying anything, you won’t be noticed. While the smaller artisan shops give more personalized tours, these are often not free. Therefore you’ve already paid for their time, so you don’t need to feel like you have to buy something. Not everyone who comes to the island has the same budget. Don’t feel you have to miss out on exploring Murano if you don’t plan to buy anything.

Don’t listen to hawkers!  These salesmen lure you into their shops with gimmicks and alluring “discount prices.” Most of the time, these guys try to upsell you a cheap glass from Chine sold at high prices. I always avoid anyone screaming at me as a general rule.

Always look for the sticker “ Vetro Murano Artistico  “! If you buy something, always be sure it has this sticker on the window or on the glasswork itself. This trademark decal is given to sellers authorized as  authentic  Murano glass makers.

Tips When Buying Murano Glass

  • Small, less notable shops will be much cheaper than the brand-name ones. Just like  Gucci  will cost more for a simple shirt than picking it up at  Walmart  or  Tesco .
  • The number of colours used in the piece will also change the cost. Threading more coloured bands into the glass will be a much more intensive and timely process. The fewer colours, the cheaper the piece. Some pieces also contain bands of gold leaf that will create a stunning effect but obviously increase the cost. Transparent glass is always cheaper than more opaque glass. Opaque glass requires more manual manipulation so if you’re looking for a cheaper piece, look for something clearer.
  • Size is pretty obvious; the larger the piece, the most expensive it will be. I found a few pairs of earrings that were perfect for me to buy. They were the perfect thing to commemorate the experience and didn’t cost me an arm and a leg.

Map of Murano

Panficio Marcato

Upon deboarding the boat, head to the west along the canal for a few minutes. Head into  Panficio Marcato  to grab a coffee and pastry. No perfect day in Italy can start without breakfast and a cup of delicious espresso. A cute little mom-and-pop pastry shop is in this old, red building with adorable green awnings. Take the espresso and pastry, or sit by the water and enjoy watching morning commuters go about their day.

Murano Glass Museum

After being properly caffeinated, head back east towards the  Murano Glass Museum . Visiting the museum first is a good idea to help get away from the crowds and gives you a primer on how these amazing works of art are created. It also provides a look into the history behind glasswork in Venice. The museum gave me a deeper level of appreciation which I could employ when I went into the glass showrooms. I understood better the magnitude of the task needed to create these pieces and, therefore, better understood the price.

morano tours 2022

The building which now houses the museum is a Gothic-style palace from 1659. It once belonged to the bishops of Torcello. Eventually, the palace passed hands several times when the diocese was abolished. Ultimately, it was passed down to the municipality and became the town hall in 1840. The town hall began to amass an archive of glasswork from Murano. They kept it in a few small rooms but over the years, as it continued to expand, they realized they needed to turn the entire space into a museum.

morano tours 2022

Layout of the Museum

The museum layout follows the history of glasswork chronologically as you move throughout. On the first floor, you find archeological discoveries from the Roman era. According to an ancient legend, Phoenician merchants on the sandy banks of a river in Syria would start campfires using  saltpetre blocks.  When these would melt and mix with the sand, the advent of glass was created!

Glass production centers have been found worldwide in  Mesopotamia, Egypt  and  Syria . The first evidence of glass blowing can be found in Palestine in the first century BC. They discovered evidence of moulds that molten glass would be poured inside. The glass could be shaped later by blowing into it to create colourless glass. In Eygpt, glass urns were blown and placed on tombs as offerings. On the first floor, you’ll find the oldest examples of glass made in Murano from the 10th and 11th centuries. These were discovered in the foundations of the nearby  San Donato Basilica.

Murano in the 14th Century

Venice’s close relationship with the Middle East allowed its glass industry to thrive. They imported materials from these Islamic nations and copied their styles. The most popular style was the  Finistere , a long-necked bottle with onion-shaped bodies. Until the 14th century, the middle east was the primary powerhouse for the best in glass production. But in the latter part of the 14th century, Murano glassblower  Angelo Barovier  invented clear glass, and this technique would change the history of glass production forever. Suddenly everyone wanted clear glass from Murano, and the workshops were in full gear to keep up with demand. Murano became the epicentre of glassworks almost overnight.

In the 16th century, Murano glassmakers perfected the art of freehand glass blowing. This employed a technique called “ flying hand ” that allowed the craftsman to manipulate the glass by hand without a mould. This resulted in much more free-form creations that looked almost ethereal, unlike anything anyone else was creating. Another popular technique on the island was diamond point engraving, which turned the glass into something more like lace. Almost impossibly so.

Evolution of Murano Glass

Murano glassmakers were constantly trying to evolve their form and did so in sometimes strange and creative away. They experimented with bizarre forms, vases in the shape of animals or chandeliers with flowers blowing from the candleholder. Bands of glass were woven into these new creations creating a filigree technique that is still popular today.

Porcelain became more and more popular in Europe in the 18th century. Glassmakers had to keep up with this trend. They, therefore, invented more opaque glass, which could then be decorated with gold and hand-painted with scenes of mythological subjects or rococo motifs. These were also seen in porcelain, so it was clear the game was on to see which artisans could do it better!

20th Century Glass Art

The art deco and art nouveau periods brought new life to the glassworkers as new styles and trends from these periods could easily be incorporated into glasswork. Unlike some businesses, Murano glass workers loved to evolve their craft while employing ancient techniques. In the 60s and 70s, alternative and sometimes downright strange designs and shapes begin to pop up on Murano island. Their works began to once more be seen and sought after all over the world. Especially in America, ensuring Murano’s legacy for glasswork for years to come.

Murano Glass Museum Hours & Admission

No visit to Murano is complete without coming here to learn more about the craft that founded the island. The  Glass Museum  is open from  11 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday  (the short opening days are due to COVID re-openings so check back as restrictions lift!)

Admission to the museum is  10€ and 4€  more if you want the self-guided headset.

Basilica of Saint Mary and Saint Donatus

From the museum, walk north along the canals. You’ll soon reach a large brick bridge which stretches over the canal. On its lefthand side, you’ll find the great  Basilica of Saint Mary and Saint Donatus . The reason for the two names is the church changed its dedication throughout the years. Originally it was built for the  Virgin Mary . Emperor Otto I was caught in a storm one day and pleaded with the Virgin to save him. He told her that he would build a church in her honour if she saved his ship. When the storm passed, Otto saw the mirage of Murano in the distance and took this as an instruction from Mary. After he returned home safe, he immediately set off to build her a church.

morano tours 2022

History of the Church

The church was built in 957, but the current incarnation is from 1140. Let’s face it is still pretty old! The secondary name being added to the church is that the relics of Saint Donato were moved to the church. After the Doge’s conquest of the Kefalonia, they raided the church there, where they discovered the body and relics of Saint Donato. It was very popular in the early medieval times to raid relics from other churches and take them back with you after wars and crusades. These were not only mementos of your conquests but relics that brought in much more modern business and tourism. Pilgrims from all over would come to worship these relics’ tombs. When visiting, they would, therefore, patronize local rooming houses and food halls. Tourism was a big business even as far back as the 12th century.

morano tours 2022

Saint Donato

Along with the bones of Saint Donato are the enormous bones of the dragon he is said to have slain. The slaying of this dragon is one of the most prevalent miracles the saint is said to have done. He was said to have been a priest who was sent to kill a venomous dragon who had been terrorizing a small island. Donato defeated the dragon and kept the bones with him even into death. Further investigation of the bones has since proven that they are most likely not that of a dragon. Despite this, they have still been re-hung above his sarcophagus inside the basilica.

Touring the Church

The best approach to the church is from the east. This side of the church’s facade is decorated with an impressive collonade inspired by the famous  Ravenna  cathedral. The deep red and brown bricks are offset with the bright white Grecian-inspired columns. Dividing the upper and lower floors is a set of triangle pieces of stone in a rainbow of colours, giving the cathedral a unique appearance.

morano tours 2022

Byzantine Mosaics

Entering the cathedral, you’ll first notice the amazing Byzantine-style 12th-century mosaic floor. This is truly the most spectacular part of the entire church. The floor designs are incredibly detailed and seem to weave around your feet like a vine. Images depicted in the tiles represent griffins, eagles, serpents and peacocks, all made of precious stones.

Above your feet, the great gold mosaic dome stands at the end of the cathedral. Inlaid into the dome is the image of the Madonna in prayer. Her hands gently reach out towards you, and even the small blacks of her eyes seem to pierce your soul.

Take some time to wander around the lovely courtyard at the back of the church. This area is often one of the most peaceful places in Murano. Even out here, it’s nice to escape the tourist.

morano tours 2022

Fratelli Tosi Showroom

Head to the street behind the church and walk along until you come to the   Fratelli Tosi showroom.  The  Fratello Tosi family  has been crafting Venetian mirrors since the 15th century. Their mastery of glass and mirrors has been passed down from generation to generation, resulting in some of the best pieces of interior art worldwide.  Venetia mirrors  have a very distinctive appearance. They were first produced here on the island in the 15th century, and their iconic style has been replicated. Even today, their stylish appearance makes them some of the most sought-after pieces for any grand home.

Lattimo Processs

The exact process for making these mirrors is a family secret, kept on the island for years. But we know that gold leaf is woven into the mirror glass before it is fired. By integrating the gold into the glass, you preserve the bright and shiny nature of the gold forever! Another amazing process that creates these unique mirrors is called  Lattimore . The Lattimore process is what creates the translucent milky white of glass. This technique also forms artful borders covered in flowers and ribbons. These designs are a staple of Venetian mirrors. Even if you can’t afford to buy one of these masterpieces for yourself, coming into the shops is like visiting a gallery filled with some true works of art!

Exploring the Houses of Murano

Continue walking along this island towards the western end, where you’ll find the tourist crowds really disappear. There aren’t as many name-brand shops on this end of the island. This district is where you’ll find many more traditional Murano houses. While not as colourful as Burano’s houses, these houses are still painted in charming and cheery colours.

morano tours 2022

Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli

At the end of the island, you’ll find the  Church of Sant a  Maria Degli Angeli . This church’s history dates back to 1188, but the current incarnation is from 1529. The land upon which the church was built was given to the church by a noble family. The daughter of this family had been forced into becoming a nun. Despite being forced into this life, she loved the convent and dedicated a large expanse of land near the water to the church. Here they could build an even greater church and monastery. For years, this was where the noblest Venetian families would send their girls to become nuns. The convent’s coffers continued to increase with so many more rich and famous families added to their order. Contrastingly, in the 19th century, the church was used as a hospital that cared for the poorest families in Murano.

Nicolò Rondinelli Paintings

The church’s interior has a fantastical ceiling and altarpiece, which are worth looking at if you have the time. The ceiling is covered in 40 portraits by  Nicolò Rondinelli,  depicting the Apostles, Prophets and Evangelists. At the end of the nave is the grand altar. The altar contains a large baroque sculptural carving made in Carrara marble. The grouping depicts the three theological virtues Faith, Hope, and Charity. They surround a richly painted image of  Annunciation .

Fondamenta Venier

Take a walk along the water and make your way to the  Ponte Longo . I love this stone walkway along the water. Hundreds of moored boats bob up and down near the  Fondamenta Venier’s  wooden docks, which jut out from the stone path. While some of the docks seem more modern in appearance, there are definitely some that appear to have been here since the dawn of Murano.

morano tours 2022

Palazzo da Mula

Just north of the bridge, you’ll find the  Palazzo da Mula.  This palace is one of the finest examples of  Venetian Gothic  palaces of the 12th and 13th centuries. Many rich Venetians would escape to the island of Murano in the summer with fewer people. Here they could escape the hustle and bustle of the “big” city. Although the Napoleonic invasions destroyed many of these noble homes, the Palazzo da Mula was spared.

Byzantine Architecture

You can study the Byzantine decorations on the facade. Most notably are the circular ornaments called  patera,  which remain embedded into the brick facade. The large square carvings on either side of four windows on the second-floor show off the coat of arms of the Mula family. Atop the capitals of the columns are carvings of shields with crests and  lambrellini ( part of a soldier’s armour). Another popular feature of these old palaces is the archway which would have originally led straight from the waters right into the house. Today there is a new dock which extends outward, but originally boats would have been able to pull right up into the house.

Mazzega Glass

Mazzega Glass Factory  showroom, just down from the grand palace, is packed with amazingly colourful and fun pieces of glass! When the company was established, its main goal was to use inspiration from European art of the twentieth century to inform their glasswork. Artists such as  Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso,  and  Georges Braque  were only some of the artists who influenced their works. On the lower level is where you’ll find their tourist shop. This area sells mostly items that are more affordable and easy to pack away for visiting tourists. Upstairs is their true art gallery. Aweinspiring glass chandeliers bloom with lush flowers, large curving vases, and even extraordinary “solid glass” sculptures show off their artist’s incredible skills.

Church of Saint Peter Martyr

The impressively tall Chiesa di San Pietro Martire is along the edge of the Murano Grand Canal. Also known as the  Church of Saint Peter the Martyr . The church was built in the 15th century but experienced a devastating fire. It wasn’t until 1511 that the new church was built. In 1806, the militia invaded the city of Murano and stole amazing works of art. Today many of these great works are on display in Accademia. The church was dissolved, and the area inside was used for art classes.

In the 19th century, the church was established as a parish. They were unable to reclaim their stolen works but to restore their church, they were able to use parts of crumbling churches set for demolition throughout the island. Today, it feels like a cobbled-together building that managed to keep the histories of many other lost churches within its walls.

Ponte San Pietro Martire

The  Ponte San Pietro Martire  reaches across the San Matteo Canal, near the church with the same name. While this bridge isn’t extremely old or particularly artsy, I love the view you get from both the top of the bridge across the canal! It’s a great way to see Murano from a slightly higher perspective.

morano tours 2022

Campo Santo Stefano

The Campo Santo Stefano is on the other side of the canal, just across the  Ponte San Pietro Martire . This adorable little square is home to one of Murano’s most eye-catching sights, the 19th-century clock tower. The  Torre dell Orologio  can be seen almost everywhere on the islands. The clock tower was built atop the foundations of an old bell tower from a 12th-century parish. This square has been a place of gathering for hundreds of years.

Comet Glass Star

In the centre of the square is a phenomenal blue sculpture made of large pieces of glass. This piece,  Comet Glass Star , was made by master glassmaker  Simone Cenedese . The sculpture is made from over 500 blown glass bulbs. At night each one of these bulbs lights up! The piece was made for the 2008  Natale di Vetro  (Christmas of Glass). This annual Christmas celebration in Murano begins on St. Nicholas Day and lasts one month. People fell so in love with the sculpture that it has remained ever since.

Fondamenta Manin

Take a walk along this side of the canal along the  Fondamenta Manin . While the glass stores and galleries along the street are what most people are focusing on, take a minute to draw your eyes up! Murano’s urban architecture is really a marvel. The colours of the houses are vibrant, and there is a real pride Murano residents have in their homes. Flower boxes are always full and almost overflowing with sweet-smelling plants.

morano tours 2022

Restaurant alla Vecchia Pescheria

Cross over the  Ponte de Mezo  to head into the  Restaurant Alla Vecchia Pescheria . This is a great place to get some delicious lunch! This modern restaurant serves up some of the most artful creations with seafood fresh from the sea just off the shores of Murano! Their  spaghetti ala vongole  (clams) is one of my favourites, and I honestly could eat it all day!

Fondamenta dei Vetrai

Continuing, you’ll walk along  Fondamenta dei Vetrai , which translates into  a glassmakers’ street . This street is where you’ll find the largest collection of glassworker shops and stores on the island. You can get ripped off in many places, but hopefully, I have featured some of my favourites here.

Simone Cenedese

One of the best is  Simone Cenedese’s  shop, the artist who created the amazing comet sculpture from the previous square. Their shop is so amazing as it features both high-end sculptural works of art but also some more adorable items.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Simone Cenedese Murano (@simonecenedeseglass)

Barovier & Toso

One of the oldest and more prestigious glasshouses in Murano is  Barovier & Toso . In 1295, the first member of the Barovier family,  Jacobello   Barovier , began their career in glass in Murano. These learned skills have been passed down and perfected from generation to generation, and now this is one of the most sought-after glass studios in the world! This showroom might contain products far above the price point of most people’s budget, but seeing them really is something to admire. If you want a more in-depth study of their work, book an appointment to visit their newly finished palazzo museum across the water.

A Private Museum

This private museum features 250 objects from the family’s history. Even 22,000 drawings and photos document their progress and work over the years. The tour is free Monday to Friday from 10 am – 12pm and 2 pm – 5pm, but you should book in advance to secure your spot as there is limited availability.

Fondamenta Serenella

Continuing down the island’s edge, swing around it and head up the western side. The street which wraps about the island’s edge is called  Fondamenta Serenella . I love the view you get here over to the main island. The fresh sea air along the street is so strong and refreshing. This is where many of the larger studios have open workrooms that the public can visit. Many of these furnaces have demonstrations showing off their craftsmen at work. These workshops, I think, would have been some of the best places to work as the cool sea air would have been the perfect way to cool down while working near the fire.

A Word about Factory Tours

Going to any Glass Factory tour and demonstration is always a bit of a shot in the dark. What you’ll see really depends on which artists are working that day. I’ve seen SO MANY people online complaining that they didn’t get an in-depth and highly skilled demonstration when they visited a workshop. Most of these demonstrations cost 3-5€ and feature a quick tour of their furnace, plus you’ll get to see an artisan at work. One of the most common demonstrations will feature a craftsman during molten glass and shaping it into a horse.

I recommend paying a higher price for the tours at the  Former Church Santa Chiara Murano  (which I will get into later), which are much more detailed and informative. But if you just want to see a quick example of how solid glass is moulded into a work of art, then these cheap and cheerful tours are a great option.

Guarnieri Glass Factory

The  Guarnieri Glass Factory  is one of my favourite shops. I have to say, I was drawn in immediately upon seeing the glass roses decorating the exterior of their workshop. This factory offers a 3€ tour which is short and sweet, but again, if you aren’t looking for something drawn out, it’s a great primer. The best part about this shop is its pieces of jewellery. I purchased a few pairs of earrings for 15€, which I will cherish forever. They have small animals for 15€, which is great for kids. I didn’t experience any pressure to buy, which is always a bonus for these shops.

Ponte Saint Chiara

Head back to  Fondamenta dei Vetrai , and cross over to the easternmost island. The bridge which leads over the canal is the  Ponte Saint Chiara . From the center of the bridge, you have a gorgeous view over the canal towards the great  Torre dell Orologio .

Former Church Santa Chiara Murano

Upon crossing over the bridge, head directly to your right through a set of wrought-iron doors. This side of Murano is much quieter, and the gateway feels as though it is meant to keep people out! But head right in, and make your way to the  Former Church Santa Chiara Murano . This old monastery was originally inhabited by  Augustinian Monks  as early as 1231. They lived on Murano island before the glass craftsman was sent to set up their furnaces. Before then, the island was a quiet and peaceful place. The church changed hands many times, from the  Augustinians  to the  Benedictines  and then to the  Franciscans . The Franciscan nuns of Santa Chiara were the last religious order to run the church, and this is where the current name of the building comes from.

Fratelli Marietti Milan

When Napoleon invaded Venice, he deconsecrated many churches. And Santa Chiara was one of his victims. The church was transformed into a large glass factory in 1826 by glass manufacturer  Fratelli Marietti Milan . But Milan didn’t think turning an old church into a glass factory might be a real challenge. He couldn’t keep up with the repairs the building needed. Eventually, he abandoned the building, and it was left in disrepair for ages of time.

Luckily, in 2012 the  Belluardo family  took it upon themselves to restore this aged monument of Murano. They transformed it from almost nothing more than a pile of bricks into this art gallery, event space and glass museum. Here you can enter the old church and participate in a glass-blowing experience with a twist! They both offer regular glass-blowing demonstrations but also have a unique love-themed experience! The concept was that glass craftsman’s enduring love for their work was one of the primary reasons this amazing art still resounds with people today.

Admission Information

With your admission, you get an entry into the Chiesa di Santa Chiara and a tour of the old church. The interior of this ancient place is amazing as it blends modern art with old bricks and beams. They use the space for events, and I can’t imagine how amazing it would be to participate in a great party under this roof! The tour also features a long glass-blowing demonstration.

Whereas the factory tours last about 5 minutes, you can watch artisans at work here for almost a whole hour. This means you’ll be able to see the creation of a more complex work of art from start to finish. You get what you pay for! Plus, there is a guide throughout your experience to answer any questions you might be curious about.

Ticket Prices: Adult: 8€ | Senior: 5€ | Student: 5€ Monday-Saturday at 12 PM and 3 PM

Gino Mazzuccato

Just down the street from the former church is the gallery of  Gino Mazzuccato  gallery. Founded in 1958, Gino Mazzuccato is one of the largest glass factories in Murano. While the former church focuses on an ancient craftsmanship, Gino Mazzuccato is all about modern and contemporary styles. This studio charges 5€ to see a demonstration, but it’s well worth the cost. Their 6,000-square-foot studio always has multiple artisans at work. They really take time to explain the process. Some other free demonstrations don’t have such accomplished workers on display.

If you are interested in buying an item, this is a great place to spend your money since they really have items that will suit many budgets! You can even buy some of the pieces they make for the demonstrations, which come at real savings. For 5€ you can get a small, blue glass horse and for 10€ a clear glass vase. While simple, these are a great way to remember your trip to Murano at a fraction of the cost.

Calle Mioti

Walk east down the  Calle Mioti,  which turns north as you continue. This extremely narrow street is one of the island’s favourite little hidden gems. Here, in this less-visited portion of the island, between these tightly packed walls, is where the glassblowers would have lived for hundreds of years on Murano. While there might not be fancy palaces here, there is something authentic about the histories surrounding the crumbling brickwork.

morano tours 2022

Murano Lighthouse

Continuing along towards the water, see if you can spot the tiptop of the lighthouse sticking out over the houses. This is the  Murano Faro.  This lighthouse, which is still active today, was built in 1912. It has served for many years as the guiding light for so many residents as they return home.

The  Murano Faro Vaporetto stop  is located right beside the lighthouse. From here you can take a boat back to the city. As you drive away, think back to all the amazing things you saw here and imagine what it must have been like for citizens of Venice the first time they saw sand transformed into a work of art!

morano tours 2022

Murano is one of my favourite short-day trips from Venice, and if you travel all the way there, don’t skip coming to this island! Have you been to Murano before? Did you pick up any incredible works of art? Or are you saving for something truly special? Let me know in the comments!

Great information! I am looking for a glass factory that can make parts for a Venetian Mirror I am restoring. I need “C” curves for the outside edges of the mirror , which were broken. I have photos and measurements I can send to factory if you have a resource. I understand these require a special mould to make but not sure what company to contact in Murano. Thank you in advannce

Michelle Adams

so happy to have this reader friendly helpful info on Murano. my question- how long of a day would all this be? and how much walking would it entail? We are 3 over 65 year old widows making the trip soon. Alas we are not 30 anymore and a couple new knees between us! Walking about all day will cease to be fun at some point and yet we have had Murano on our to do from the onset of planning. Any helps would be appreciated.

Hi Michelle, I think you can make the day as long or short as you want. The tour I wrote about is probably a leisurely day long but to ensure you don’t over exert yourself I would perhaps consider visiting either the church or the museum (rather than both.) Then only choose one or two galleries to visit, there are so many but choose the ones that really light up your eyes. And add in one experience to a glass factory, since this is such a unique and interesting experience in a place with so much history of glass making. You can skip the walk to the lighthouse to reduce the amount of walking as well, as this is just an additional view point.

Murano has many little restaurants on the island so be sure to stop frequently for a glass of wine or a espresso. I’m 37 and even I do this to ensure I’m not pushing myself too much and soaking in the atmosphere as that is truly one of the most amazing parts of Murano. It just has such a beautiful feeling and so simply sitting in a cafe or restaurants is a worthwhile experience. Please don’t hesitate the reach out if you have any other questions. If all you do if make it to the island, go to one little shop and have a glass of wine near the water watching the boats go by I promise you’ll still have a wonderful time. Don’t ever feel like just because you do less, you are experiencing “less.” It’s always about what you take from an experience, not how much you take.

Premium Lagoon Excursion: Murano Glass Making, Burano & Wine Tasting

Look back as your boat sets off into the Venice lagoon.

  • Explore Murano and Burano, two ancient islands only accessible by boat, where Venice's authentic traditions still run deep.
  • Visit a secret island vineyard, today part of a Michelin Star restaurant, and enjoy an exclusive wine tasting.
  • Sit back and relax on our private boat, taking you and your small group of just 20 guests maximum from island to island. There's no need to worry about finding your own way around.
  • See Murano’s spectacular glassmaking tradition come to life at a private demonstration in a gorgeous old church.

Tour description

Spend one perfect day exploring venice’s charming islands and enjoying vip treatment..

This Murano & Burano tour takes you away from the crowds of central Venice to the city's outlying islands, bursting with authentic history and culture. Explore Burano and Murano by private boat, complete with an exclusive wine tasting at a Michelin Star restaurant and a private glassblowing demonstration.

Say buongiorno to your guide and small group in central Venice, then enjoy a short walk through a picturesque neighborhood to your boat to begin your Murano & Burano tour. You’ll make a brief stop along the way for a photo op at one of Venice’s most recognizable spots.

Once aboard the private boat, you’ll slip away from the city center and catch breathtaking views from the water. Pass by legendary sights such as St. Mark’s Square, the Doge's Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs. Throughout the pleasant hour-long ride, your guide will also point out some lesser-known gems that you’ll want to explore during the rest of your time in the city.

Explore picture-perfect Burano with a knowledgeable guide.

You’ll disembark at Burano, home to the famous colorful houses which have been the homes of Venice’s legendary lacemakers since the 16th century. Enjoy a stroll around the island with your guide, taking in the charming streets and sights like the old fish market (no longer in use) and the main church. After the guided portion of your visit, you’ll have the option to accompany your guide to a traditional lacemaking workshop or enjoy some free time on your own.

Time for wine! Pop over to a secret vineyard—now part of a Michelin Star restaurant—on the tiny island of Mazzorbo, just across a small bridge from Burano. Relax and enjoy the views of the vineyards from the restaurant’s stunning tasting room as you sip two excellent wines in an exclusive tasting that’s not available with any other operator.

See Murano’s glassmaking tradition come to life.

Your next stop is the island of Murano, known for its respected tradition of glassmaking since the 13th century. After a 40-minute boat ride, you'll disembark on Murano and head into a formerly abandoned medieval church. Visited by Casanova and Venetian nobles in its heyday, this fascinating space is now a glassmaking workshop. Marvel at a private glassblowing demonstration and learn about the storied history of this local tradition.

After your Murano tour, you'll have some free time to explore the island. Finally, hop back aboard your private boat and we’ll have you back in central Venice by late afternoon. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in Murano for a bit longer on your own, with instructions from your guide on how to make your way back to Venice via public transport.

You’ll return to Venice with a new perspective on the Floating City and some of its lesser-visited (yet no less charming) islands. Thanks to the stories from your guide that bring the islands and their traditions to life, your Murano & Burano tour will provide you with a greater appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the lagoon.

If you want to go to an island, you have to go by boat. Around Venice there are more than 10 islands that can be reached by public ferry (so-called water bus or Italian vaporetto). Murano is the most visited island around Venice besides Lido. Every few minutes a vaporetto leaves for Murano. On this page you will find all information about waterbuses to Murano.

>>>>   If you don't want to wait long at the ticket office of the Murano Glass Museum, you should buy the tickets online on this link beforehand.

Tickets for water buses in Venice are quite expensive. This is especially true for one-way tickets. But there are day tickets, multi-day tickets and weekly tickets. These are not quite as expensive.

>>> On this link you will find the tickets for the waterbuses (one-way tickets and for 24, 48 and 72 hours) 24, 48 und 72 Stunden)

Tickets to Murano

All tickets in Venice are season tickets, which means that you can take as many ferries as you want in a given time, including return trips, etc. The tickets are also valid on buses and streetcars throughout Venice. So in the buses in the districts on the mainland, between Venice and the mainland and on the islands with streets like Lido . There are no buses and streets on Murano . But the island is not that big. You can easily walk everywhere in half an hour.

There are tickets for 75 min, 24h, 48h, 72h and one week. Most tourists buy these tickets in advance on the internet. On this website you can find the tickets for the vaporetti of Venice. Vaporetti is the plural of vaporetto (public ferry, waterbus).

Vaporetto lines to Murano

Murano is the most popular island among tourists who want to visit the sights of Venice. Before the Corona pandemic, tens of thousands of visitors came to the island of Murano every day. We inform you about the sights on Murano on our main page about Murano . Murano is mainly known for the production of glass and glass products. The island of Murano is at the closest point only about 1 km as the crow flies from Venice.

>>> Website to buy tickets for the waterbuses

Now the overview of all vaporetto lines to Murano:

Line 3: The waterbus line, which you should use if you want to get to Murano quickly. A kind of express vaporetto to Murano. It departs from the Venice bus station (Piazalle Roma) at Pier D. It is the only bus stop on the island of Venice, ALL buses and the streetcar from the mainland stop here. Then, after a few hundred meters, the water buses of line 3 stop again at the central station of Venice called Santa Lucia . This is where ALL trains from the mainland arrive, the only station on Venice. Then it goes without further stop to Murano . In Murano the ferries of line 3 then stop several times and return to the main station and bus station in Venice. If you want to get off in the center of Murano, you should get off at the pier "Museo" (museum, meaning the glass museum). But also other stations on Murano are ok. They are usually only 10 minutes walk apart. The main advantage of line 3 is the short travel time, less than 30 minutes. However, the vaporetto line 3 only runs every 20 to 30 minutes and only during the day.

Line 4.1. und 4.2. :   These lines circle the island of Venice and make a detour to Murano. The important difference between the lines is that the vaporetto line 4.1. circles Venice counterclockwise, the ferries of line 4.2. clockwise. When circling Venice, the vaporetti of these two lines stop about 20 times. They do not go through Venice, for example on the Canal Grande , but only around the outside of the island. The two lines also make a detour to the island Giudecca . The disadvantage of these lines are long travel times, a round trip of the island Venice with 20 stops and the detour to Murano takes about 2 hours. From the bus and train station it is better to take line 3, see above. If, from the train stations you should take line 4.2. to Murano and line 4.1. back. This is much shorter than around Venice. From San Marco (St. Mark's Square etc.) it doesn't matter, both directions are about the same distance, you are almost an hour to Murano. If you want to book the cemetery island San Michele (between Venice and Murano) you have to take the lines 4.1. and 4.2., because only these lines stop there. Travel time between San Michele and Murano is about 5 minutes. The waterbus lines 4.1. and 4.2. both run at least every 20 minutes during the day.

>>> Vaporetto 4.1. und 4.2. (all information)

Line 7: This line was an express line directly from San Marco (bus stop near Piazza San Marco ) to Murano. However, since Corona it has been discontinued. It is to be expected that the vaporetti of line 7 will be running again when the number of tourists in Venice increases significantly.

Line 12 : This waterbus line is the "Venice Island Express". It connects Venice (only stop Fondamente Nove with Murano and then continues on to the islands of Burano , Mazzorbo and Torcello . Burano and Mazzorbo are connected by a pedestrian bridge, so you can go to one island and return from the other. This ferry line runs every 30 minutes. Every second boat (every hour) goes to Treporti and Punta Sabbioni (with bus connection to Jesolo ). Currently, however, in Corona times in summer 2020, there are only a few ferries a day to the mainland. These vaporetti travel the same route back again. Attention: the water buses of line 12 stop the Murano only at the pier Faro (lighthouse). See also: Water buses to Burano .

>>> Vaporetto 12 (all info)

>>>  Our overview of all waterbus lines

>>> On this link you will find the tickets for the waterbuses

Linie 13: Also from Fondamente Nove in Venice to Murano (Faro) and then on to the rarely visited islands IslSant Erasmo (3 stops) and Vignole . These two islands are agriculturally characterized and are rarely visited by tourists. The water buses of the line 13 go back the same way. The vaporetti go only once per hour in both directions.

Travel times to Murano

From Santa Lucia Central Station and Bus Station : About 25 minutes to 40 minutes. The fastest is line 3.

From San Marco (St. Mark's Square) to Murano : At least 50 minutes with lines 4.1. and 4.2.

From Burano Island to Murano : About 30 minutes with line 12

>>> Website for buying vaporetto tickets

From the island of Lido to Murano

The best way is to go from the island Lido to Venice to "Fondamente Nove" and change there to Murano.

From the airport to Murano

Those who have booked a hotel on Murano may want to go directly from Marco Polo Airport to Murano. This is not possible with the normal public water buses of the municipal company ACTV . There are, however, frequent ferries of the Alilaguna company between the port of the airport and Murano. These have to be paid extra, the normal waterbus day ticket etc. is not valid here. More information about the ferries to and from Venice Airport we have summarized on this page.

Island hopping Venice with Murano

Many visitors to Venice go on an island hopping day. They then visit the island of Murano, Burano and Torcello, sometimes Mazzorbo. This can be done either alone with the waterbuses of line 12, but there is also the possibility of an organized excursion for under 20 Euro per person. From Venice you can visit the 3 islands Murano, Burano and Torcello one after the other and you have a certain time on each island. A great day trip for little money, which you can book on this link .

Getting to Murano Island must be done by boat. We recommend tours because they are priced reasonably, and a friendly local guide curates your experience! After, you'll pass through a glass-blowing museum or showroom and have the opportunity to purchase a souvenir if you like. Yes, this portion of the tour can feel a bit commercial, but this is the culture amongst the factories of Murano Island, and you are not required to purchase anything. Did you know that at one point in history, the glass blowers of Murano Island were not allowed to leave out of fear of them giving away valuable trade secrets? It can be as challenging today to see these artists at work as it was for them to leave centuries ago. We're experts in Italy and have many options, including different start times that meet your travel needs. Most tours also include islands like Burano, famous for its beautiful houses and lace! 2022 Nissan Murano

2019 nissan murano front exterior

Select a year

  • Lows Bland driving character, annoying CVT transmission, uncompetitive towing ability.
  • Verdict While it's stylish and comfortable, the Murano is simply outclassed by more modern and more practical alternatives.

What's New for 2022?

The Murano receives few changes for 2022, but a Midnight Edition package is now available and adds black exterior accents, 20-inch black wheels, and illuminated doorsill protectors. The only other change is that the midrange SV trim gains heated front seats with faux-leather upholstery.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Nissan Murano starts at $34,645 and goes up to $46,195 depending on the trim and options.

Since the 2022 Murano is one of the older options in this class—and it finished last in a comparison test —we'd avoid the more expensive models. That pushes us toward the Murano SV, which has a nice mix of style and substance at an appropriate price. Its standard highlights include adaptive cruise control, power-adjustable front seats with heat, and remote start. Those who want all-wheel drive can add it for an extra $1550.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Under the hood of all Murano models is a 3.5-liter V-6 making 260 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive can be added to any trim, and both setups utilize a CVT. The last Murano we tested had decent performance on our test track and delivered peppy performance around town. Bury your foot in the throttle—an exercise few Murano buyers will do frequently—and the CVT spikes the engine revs and holds them there, resulting in a loud, droning growl from under the hood. The Murano is in its element on long-distance highway jaunts, where the powertrain fades into the background and delivers a peaceful journey. With a suspension tuned for comfort, the Murano makes easy work of road trips, and its suspension damps out even the roughest potholes to deliver a smooth ride. Encounter a twisty road and the Murano will safely deliver you to the next intersection, but it won't entertain you along the way. The steering delivers good highway stability but is dull and uncommunicative on meandering two-lanes. The Murano offers a low tow rating of 1500 pounds.

2019 nissan murano rear exterior

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates the Murano will earn 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The addition of all-wheel drive also doesn't diminish either rating. In our real-world testing, the Murano fell short of its highway fuel-economy estimate—27 mpg—but still managed to post one of the best results of the rivals we sampled. For more information about the Murano's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Murano's cabin is among the nicest, most well-equipped interiors in this comparison and is more luxe than most of the other Nissan products. Our Platinum test vehicle wore soft leather on the seats, door panels, and armrests, with a sweeping dashboard design divided by a band of dark teak-wood trim. Both front-seat occupants should easily find a pleasant seating position in the heavily cushioned chairs. Rear-seat passengers are treated to a comfortable, reclining bench seat with plentiful padding. Since the Murano's cargo bay is below average in size for this class, it comes as no surprise that behind its rear seat we managed to fit only nine of our carry-on suitcases while its rivals held more. However, with its rear seat stowed, the Murano out-hauled the Jeep Grand Cherokee , and we fit 26 cases inside the cabin. Most of the interior-storage cubby bins are adequately sized except for the Murano's glovebox, which is huge.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All Murano models feature an 8.0-inch color touchscreen display running Nissan's NissanConnect infotainment system; navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM with Travel Link weather and traffic updates also are now standard across the range. Morano Calabro

Morano calabro, a crib at the foot of the pollino.

MORANO-CALABRO-Parco-del-Pollino-(1)

The orange flags

Dec 28, 2023 9:31 AM

An explosion of colours forms the backdrop of Morano Calabro, a small historical village to the north of Cosenza. Stretched across the hilltop like a crib, the village is framed by the Pollino massif.

Since 2003, Morano Calabro has been named one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. It is also one of the main attractions of the Pollino National Park with which it shares its majestic and lush nature and unforgettable landscapes.

Come and marvel at the white houses that appear to be cascading down the cone shaped hill that dominates the landscape. At its summit, you may be able to spot the village’s must-see castle.

The narrow stone houses, arches, and towers that characterise the village perfectly complement the natural surroundings. Morano is an ancient town whose name appeared for the first time on a milestone from the second century BC found in Polla in the Vallo di Diano. The engraving on the rock suggests that, at that time, the town was a pit stop along the ancient Regio-Capuam consular road. Consisting of three districts surrounding the castle and the most important churches, the town of Morano extends towards the valley within a system of walls. Its dense and intricate urban layout has made Morano one of Calabria’s best preserved medieval historic centres.

To fully immerse yourself in its magical atmosphere head for the maze of narrow, winding, steeply sloping streets that are partly carved into the rock and tightly packed amidst a compact network of houses, churches, monasteries, arches, portals, underpasses, stairways, and squares.  The views are reminiscent of works by Escher. In fact, the great Dutch engraver himself visited Morano Calabro in 1930 and left behind an impressive work depicting a mirror image of himself with the village and surrounding landscape portrayed upside down, as if seen through a mirror.  The village also offers visitors the chance to admire an unexpectedly large number of works of art signed by leading artists such as Bartolomeo Vivarini and Pietro Bernini. The picturesque alleyways meander up through the village past stately buildings and churches, until they reach the top where the ruins of an ancient castle stand. The castle was once part of a defence system which was built in 1200 by extending a previous 10th-century structure. From the Norman Swabian Castle, you will descend towards the Church of San Pietro e Paolo, the oldest church in the village. Although built in the year 1000, it was renovated in a late Baroque style. Other religious treasures include the Church of San Nicola di Bari and the Church and Monastery of Bernardino da Siena, a rare example of 15th century monastic architecture in Calabria. The facade is preceded by a portico with four arches which is a 17th century remake of the original one. Its inner walls display the remains of frescoes dating back to 1499 which, unfortunately, have deteriorated considerably.  The church houses a large number of valuable works of art including a wooden pulpit from 1611 carved with figures of saints in bas-relief; a statue of Saint Bernardino sculpted and gilded in 1600; and a 17th-century painting of the Immaculate Virgin Mary by Daniele Russo. The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena dates back to the Byzantine period and features an imposing dome and bell tower decorated with green-yellow majolica tiles. An interesting fact about the bell tower is that it can be seen from everywhere in the village. The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Magdalena is particularly important on account of its historical and artistic value. It is a real museum church where art, culture, spirituality, and nature meet to create a place where visitors can revitalise both body and soul. Other must-visit religious buildings include the church of Santa Maria del Carmine and, outside the town, the Capuchin convent with its austere 17th-century cloister. The ruins of the monastery of Colloreto, surrounded by a large forest of holm oak and beech trees at the foot of the Pollino, is also worth a visit.

The Norman-Swabian Castle

Situated at the top of the village of Morano is the Norman-Swabian castle, whose structure is relatively similar to Castel Nuovo castle in Naples. The scenic ruins of the Castle are in an excellent location where it is thought that a Roman watchtower previously existed. The ruins of the castle overlook the entire valley of the river Coscile, formerly known as the Sybaris river during the Magna Graecia era. The Castle was built on the remains of this outpost and in the 16th century, with the help of nobleman Pietro Antonio Sanseverino, it was transformed into its current form. Used by Sanseverino himself as a summer residence, he commissioned the best Neapolitan architects of the time to create a castle with a lavish shape and all the features he desired. It was an imposing fortress with three floors and a square shape with six cylindrical towers, a moat, and a drawbridge. It was also enclosed by a ravelin and had ramparts and a moat with a drawbridge. In terms of its interior, it contained large rooms divided into several apartments and it was estimated to have an overall capacity for a garrison of a thousand men. However, after being bombarded by the French in 1806 it went into rapid decline. It was dismantled over time and very little of the building remains. Thanks to recent renovations, sections of its facades have been recovered, as well as two frontal towers and some internal rooms which are now used for exhibitions and cultural events.

Monastery of San Bernardino da Siena

The church of the Franciscan Observants, dedicated to San Bernardino da Siena, is located near the Villa Comunale. The church, an example of 15th century monastic architecture, has a late-Gothic style which was recovered during a 'philological' restoration in the fifties which removed the stylistic overlapping that characterised later periods. In the portico in front, which has four round arches on the facade plus one at the side, you can admire the many fascinating remains of frescoes dating back to 1499. These are similar in style to the cycle of the cathedral of Cassano Ionio. Two yellow stone portals, both in late-Gothic style, stand out on the facade: one is ogival on polystylar pillars (for access to the church); the other consists of a lowered arch (for access to the cloister) inspired by the durazzesco-Catalan genre and the styles used in Neapolitan civil architecture. The use of exposed materials gives the building that severe and sober look typical of Franciscan environments. The high and bare walls of the single-naved interior provided the perfect backdrop for architecture and art to co-exist in harmony. Still today they create a simple yet mystical ambiance. The centre is dominated by a large and dramatic 15th-century wooden crucifix bearing the inscription “Hic me solus amor non mea culpa tenet". Below the crucifix there once stood a grandiose polyptych by Bartolomeo Vivarini, signed and dated 1477, which was later recovered and kept in the sacristy of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena.

Flag Festival

The Flag Festival was held until 1806 in Morano Calabro and then returned in 1996. Currently, the event takes place in spring or summer and recalls an epic battle that took place around the year 1000 between the Moranesi and the Saracen invaders. It is said that during the battle, one of the Saracens was beheaded and his bleeding head was displayed in the streets as a sign of victory. The event, which benefits from the wide participation of the inhabitants, aims to promote the history, culture, and traditions of the area, and focusses on informing people about the city’s identity, which has influenced the local culture over the years. During the festival, many tourists flock to Morano to immerse themselves in the cultural entertainment on offer. Every corner of the town is brought to life by costumed figures, street artists, flag wavers, knights, exhibitions, and craft stalls. There are also many food and wine stands which provide the perfect opportunity to sample some typical local delicacies.

In addition to its stunning natural landscape, the wonders of Morano Calabro can also be found in its delectable gastronomy. The territory produces an excellent olive oil and many other exquisite flavours of Calabria including cheeses such as caciocavallo, mozzarella, treccia, ricotta, and pecorino, which are all made from sheep’s milk using a traditional process. One must-try cheese is la felciata which is a fresh cheese wrapped and preserved in fern leaves. Morano is also well-known for homemade dishes, in particular for its gnocchi, known as cavateddri .  Other famous dishes include rascateddri , macaroni with sausage sauce; and lagane , tagliolini with beans or chickpeas. In terms of dishes that are exclusive to Morano there is stoccu e pateni , which consists of stockfish with potatoes and dried peppers.

Morano Calabro

Morano Calabro, Beautiful Medieval Village in Italy’s Pollino Mountains

A picture-postcard medieval village, Morano Calabro lies within the Pollino National Park in the very north of Calabria along the Basilicata border. Its tightly packed houses along a maze of lanes wrapped around a hill appear like a fairytale, often likened to a nativity scene, in Italian il Presepe del Pollino .

MORANO CALABRO ORIGINS

There are numerous theories as to the derivation of the name Morano Calabro, ranging from a Greek word meaning to come together or to pile up, as a description of the village’s shape, to a Hebrew word for castle, to the completely implausible notion that it was founded by Moors, as the community already existed in Roman times. Calabro was added after unification to distinguish it from Morano sul Po in the Piedmont region.

Morano Calabro, Borghi più belli d'Italia

Historic Morano Calabro

While the specific origins are not clear, Morano Calabro was on the map by the second century BC, as evidenced by an important historic street marker, known as the Lapis Pollae . This marble milestone, discovered in the Province of Salerno, testifies to Morano as a stopping place on the Roman road that went from Capua to Reggio Calabria, the Via Capua–Reghium, also known as the southern route of the Via Popilia, which ran 321 miles (517 km). You can see the Latin name, Muranum, on the fifth line of the Roman marker.

Roman milestone

Lapis Pollae, Via Capua–Reghium, Muranum appears on 5th line, 2nd century BC

Morano Calabro sits at an altitude of 700 meters (2300 feet), on the crown of a hill with a panoramic view of the Coscile River valley and a stunning backdrop of the southern side of the Pollino Mountains with its multiple peaks reaching well over 2,000 meters or 7,000 feet. Many accredit the Romans with founding the community, others propose earlier beginnings, such as by the Greeks, the Oenotrians or by prehistoric peoples, as Morano Calabro lies at a natural crossroads. This strategic location has contributed to its ups and downs, and throughout time Morano has been the setting of numerous armed conflicts, such as the 10 th -century Saracen attack successfully beaten back by the moranesi , citizens of Morano, who remember the victory today with both its historic coat of arms as well as with an annual reenactment, called the Festa della Bandiera  (Festival of the Flag).

NORMAN-SWABIAN CASTLE IN MORANO CALABRO

Shortly after the celebrated triumph over the Saracen aggressors, the Normans entered the scene and built a castle over the remains of a Roman watchtower. This 11 th -century construction would be amplified several times, and over many centuries, its defensive walls would be put to the test, as well. Today, the imposing ruins are a picturesque reminder of the Normans, the Swabians and the various feudal lords from medieval times up to the Napoleonic period.

No longer barred by a drawbridge or moat, access to the castle only requires a modest entrance ticket. The setting is dramatic and the grounds are lovely, flanked by old stone walls and two of the six cylindrical towers from the most recent renovation hundreds of years ago. Part of the structure’s remaining three interior floors gives an idea of the size of the fortification, said to have had the capacity to accommodate a thousand-man garrison that could withstand long periods of siege.

HISTORIC CENTER OF MORANO CALABRO

old town Morano Calabro

Castle district

The community of Morano Calabro developed throughout the Middle Ages and still retains its medieval layout. Houses cover the hillside, seemingly in a jumble. Many in the historic center have been abandoned as the town that boasted close to 10,000 inhabitants at the end of the nineteenth century was drastically reduced to 6,000 through emigration into the early twentieth, and down to just over 4,000 moranesi  today.

Morano Calabro, Calabrian village

Maze of streets in the old town

At the heart of this labyrinth of old houses is a delightful initiative to restore the ancient dwellings and to find a way to bring life back to the community. The project Il Nibbio , named after a bird of prey, has established a Museo Naturalistico  (nature museum), an Albergo Diffuso  (guest lodgings in various buildings), old artisan workshops and even a music lab. Buying up dilapidated properties in the area around the castle, the organization has developed a broad plan of not only restoring the abandoned structures, but of creating a cultural aspect that attracts visitors to the area with lodging and programs geared for all ages.

Nature Museum, Pollino Mountains

Animals from the Pollino National Park at the Nature Museum

As Morano Calabro is a jumping off point for activities in the Pollino National Park, Italy’s largest, why not offer a nature museum? Collections of mammals, birds, insects, flora, fauna and even fossils and minerals fill contemporary cases in several of the old structures. I particularly appreciate the exhibit space shared with an ancient fireplace and nooks.

Many medieval domiciles have been lovingly renovated and are available for rent, complete with stunning mountain views and antique furnishings. Stepping into these little abodes is like going back in time.

A garden bar will whet guests’ whistles and meals prepared with local ingredients can be arranged. And there is a larger house, called Il Convivio del Nibbio  (the banquet of the bird of prey), a cozy area for small receptions and even house concerts. Its funky decorations include an old-fashioned brazier, which would have warmed the residents of the old dwellings.

CHURCHES OF MORANO CALABRO

As in any Italian community, Morano Calabro has its share of old churches and precious objects within them. The Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli Pietro e Paolo , in the castle district, is one of the oldest, dating from 1007, although its façade and interior reflect later renovations.

Amongst the artistic highlights are four marble statues of the church’s Apostles Peter and Paul together with the saints Catherine of Alexandria and Lucy by Tuscan sculptor Pietro Bernini, father of the more famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the carved wooden altar and pulpit of local artistry, and the silver processional cross.

Built just outside the original walls, the Collegiata di Santa Maria  contains a beautiful polyptych altarpiece of Bartolomeo Vivarini that was commissioned by a Sanseverino feudal lord back in the 15 th  century for the nearby Monastero di San Bernardino da Siena , also worth a visit while in town, perhaps for the celebration of this patron saint Bernardino of Siena together with the above-mentioned Festa della Bandiera  on May 20 th .

VISIT MORANO CALABRO

driving to Morano Calabro

Morano Calabro, an historic crossroads

While a visit to Morano Calabro may seem off the beaten path, don’t forget that Muranum was a stop for the Romans heading south, and today, there’s an exit off the A2 highway that goes from Salerno to Reggio Calabria (formerly the A3).

visiting Morano Calabro

Heading up the hill to the old town

Over 100 years ago, Norman Douglas visited the town and in his Old Calabria  complained of the great difficulty in finding a mule for hire. He wrote that he was told mules were “very busy animals in Morano…. Animali occupatissimi .” And I reflect, perhaps they were all assisting the thousands of moranesi  headed for Naples on their way to the Americas with their worldly goods loaded on the backs of the classic beast of burden. Interesting that Douglas didn’t put two and two together regarding the scarcity of mules, as he went on to comment, “The men of Morano emigrate to America; two-thirds of the adult and adolescent male population are at this moment on the other side of the Atlantic.” Many landed in Latin America: Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Guatemala; and Morano Calabro’s sister city is Brazil’s Porto Alegre, estimated to count 15,000 moranesi  amongst its population.

In 1930, M. C. Escher, the Dutch graphic artist, visited Morano Calabro and was inspired by what he saw. The conglomeration of houses growing out of the hillside take on an order and symmetry, blending with both their environment and his creative style.

Morano Calabro is on the list of I Borghi più belli d’Italia  or Italy’s most beautiful villages, one of sixteen in Calabria. Not to be missed on any visit are the local products, in particular the cheeses made from the native sheep and the excellent cured pork products. When will that visit be? It’s apparently in the hands of those greater than ourselves.

We stopped here for lunch on our way to Gerace from Ravello. We had a wonderful lunch at Agritourismo Colloreto. We were celebrating my mom’s 80th birthday. We did not get to spend time in the town so hope to go back one day!

' src=

What a lovely place to celebrate your mother’s birthday. The old town itself may be a little steep for an 80+, but you can certainly drive up to the castle on your next visit.

' src=

Thanks for this. Everything you post is so rich in detail, beautiful photos, and fascinating history–all of which I greatly appreciate. I don’t always comment, but I do always read and enjoy!

So glad you’re enjoying my posts – always great to hear! (Please share your enthusiasm for my blog and books with your friends.)

I read Douglas “Old Calabria” on my way to my father’s village, Cirella di Platí, Reggio Calabria, on the train in 1982. What a cranky old Brit, but it was fun to view the same countryside that he was describing over 100 years ago. His book was published the year my father was born.

Love these historic tours of I Borghi più belli d’Italia that you do, especially in the overlooked, under appreciated Calabria,

Ha, ha, yes, Norman Douglas was certainly a personality, but he was an intrepid traveler and gives a good perspective of the time, infused with his unbridled charisma, of course. And amazing how many of these beautiful villages there are!

So cool – my mother’s parents were from Plati – we stayed in Gerace but made a visit to Plati.

It’s a small world!

' src=

Wish we could visit THIS Area! 👍😄

Me, too. Morano Calabro is particularly picturesque and it’s so nice to be amidst the mountains and all they have to offer.

Enjoyed seeing it ALL AGAIN !!! 😄💕🌟

' src=

Makes me want to go there! Could I survive on my meager Social Security benefits?

If you meet Italy’s minimum income requirements for a residency permit, you can get by on relatively little in Southern Italy.

' src=

Un altro borgo incantevole! Too many places to go when travel is allowed. My list is growing. Morano Calabro looks delectably sketch able. The Escher print is mesmerizing! I love ‘animali occupatissimi’-but you would think Douglas would have figured it out! I thought about reading his book, but he sounds extremely grumpy. Ciao, Cristina

The perfect place for an artist! Norman Douglas is definitely a product of the period and his social class, and at times his statements may be a bit sweeping. However, he did his homework, spoke a ton of languages and he could really wield a pen.

Most of Norman Douglas’s writings are available via the HathiTrust. There are several editions of “Old Calabria” there. Here is a link to the Martin Secker 1920 edition, which you can read for free and not even get up from your chair!

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc2.ark:/13960/t4sj1g81s&view=1up&seq=7

For those of you with a New York Times subscription, you can read his obituary, which appeared in the 9 February 1952, p 13. He lived on the island of Capri from 1888 on, and that is where he died. The obit states, ” Mr. Douglas evinced cynicism born probably of the disdain for the more stuffy demands of conventionalism in Europe…” The obit refers to a two page review of two books “Siren Land”, and “South Wind,” titled, “Norman Douglas, Novelist and Master of Prose–Through His Several Books Runs a Vein of Ironic Philosophy” https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1952/02/09/84301769.html?pageNumber=13

Well worth reads to get a better understanding of the man.

Thank you, the HathiTrust is an invaluable internet resource. Regarding Douglas, whether or not the reader’s world view aligns with his, he was certainly an intrepid traveler, who took the time to get to know Everyman, and I believe, chronicled his journeys in as honest a manner as he was able.

Where exactly is that statue of Padre Pio located? We’d like to visit it during a visit to Morano Calabro. Thank you.

The Padre Pio statue is across the street from the Convento dei Cappuccini, which is on Via Nicola de Cardona, 51. Enjoy your visit to Morano Calabro!

Hi, I very much enjoyed you’re writing and description of Morano Colabro. I will be traveling in a few weeks with my adult son to see where our grandparents and great grandparents came from. I’ve never been to Europe and we look forward to our visit to Italy once in a lifetime. My whole life we were told my grandparents came from Naples and I’m just finding now that this is where he’s from I just wanna walk the streets and see where he grew up and left at 17 years old and came to New York . A quick question ,I have one night stay booked was hoping to stay two nights is there enough for me to see since were taking a train and then either a taxi or hire a car to get into the area I’m just wondering if there’s enough to see you there? I would appreciate anything you’d like to share. Thank you, Adriana

You could easily spend a week in this area and not run out of things to see and do, but you will need a car or driver. For example, nearby there is the Arbereshe village of Civita and the archeological site and sanctuary in Papasidero . The nature is also very beautiful if you like hiking.
