Buxton’s beautiful Opera House, stunning Crescent and, of course, famous Buxton water, make the town well worth a visit. We visit Leek, the Queen of the Staffordshire Moorlands, boasting a stone-cobbled market square and well-preserved architecture. Sit back, relax and enjoy the gentle scenery of this fascinating area.

Metropole Hotel Torquay

Metropole Hotel Torquay Just got back from a lovely trip with Alfa to the Metropole in Torquay. The driver, Dominic, was excellent, great fun. The hotel is tired looking and needs a refurbishment but the room was clean and the food tasty. Overall, this was superb value for money and I will definitely book more trips with Alfa. Dominic was great!

My 1st experience of an Alfa Holiday

I found the hotel to be very comfortable and the staff were very helpful. I enjoyed the trip's out the only thing was because it was a festive break I felt that the trip to Lynmouth was to long as a lot of the shops were closed. I really did enjoy the holiday and the food so much that me and my friend have booked the Isle of Wight for next April and the coach driver we had Clive was extremely funny and very courteous.

Dominic best driver we.had a lovely week in Torquay

We had a lovely week in Torquay. The coach drive was excellent and very friendly and funny his name is Dominic and was a very good driver. We stayed at The Metropol Hotel the room was a reasonable size room and we had a walk in shower. The hotel had entertainment most nights and very friendly staff. The only problem we found is the reception area and lounge looked very neglected worn out chairs uneven and chipped floorboards. We give 5 stars because of your coach driver Dominic outstanding personality and very funny, he made our holiday.

The driver Lawrence was an excellent driver and kept us well entertained during our travel to and from the hotel. I look forward to another holiday with him hopefully. The hotel was good but a little bit more colourful trimmings would have made things feel more christmasy. is was a bit bland. The entertainment was excellent even though for three nights we had comedy and not once did we hear the same joke twice. Food was good, hotel was clean and the staff were friendly. A good holiday

A single rough sleeper in Derbyshire Dales – as numbers across England soar

Just one person was sleeping rough in Derbyshire Dales last year, new estimates show.

It comes as numbers across England soared, with homelessness charities blaming the Government's "ineffectiveness" to solve the housing crisis.

The Government previously pledged to end rough sleeping by 2024, but since the "Everyone In" scheme – which housed homeless people in emergency hotels during the coronavirus pandemic – ended in 2021, the number of people sleeping on the streets has rocketed.

However, the latest Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities figures show one person was estimated to be sleeping rough in Derbyshire Dales based on a snapshot of a single night in autumn last year – down slightly from two the year before.

Nationally, the number of people estimated to be sleeping rough rose by 27% last year to 3,898.

This remains below pre-pandemic levels, but represents a significant increase of 60% in the last two years.

The count includes people sleeping outside, but does not cover sofa surfers, those in hostels or shelters, or people in recreational or traveller sites, and figures are generally considered to be an undercount of the true number.

Matt Downie, chief executive of Crisis, said the scale of rough sleeping is a "source of national shame".

Mr Downie urged the Government to rethink its strategy and provide long-term funding for proven solutions which help people get off the streets.

Polly Neate, chief executive of Shelter, said the Government "cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the housing emergency".

Ms Neate said the Government has not built enough social homes, forcing thousands of people to "spend their nights freezing on street corners" due to record high rents.

Ms Neate also warned of the record high number of people living in temporary accommodation.

Further DLUHC figures show 109,000 households in England were living in temporary accommodation as of September.

This was up 10% on the last year, and the highest figure on record.

It included eight households in Derbyshire Dales – two less than the year before.

Meanwhile, the number of children living in temporary accommodation also hit a record-high 142,490, including 10 in Derbyshire Dales.

A DLUHC spokesperson said: "We are now spending an unprecedented £2.4 billion to help people at risk of homelessness and support rough sleepers, including £220 million announced this week, which will help fund thousands of beds and specialist support services across the country through councils.

"Whilst we have made good progress and rough sleeping remains below pre-pandemic levels, there is more work to be done to meet our ambition to end it entirely, and we will continue to work with local authorities to help people off the streets for good."
