Carnival Cheers drink package: Will it save you money on your next cruise?
A Carnival cruise vacation just doesn't feel complete without a few fruity frozen cocktails and a nightly glass of wine or two at dinner. Whether you're a casual drinker or a spirits enthusiast, you might be wondering if the Carnival Cheers drink package is right for you.
The beauty of cruising is that almost everything is included — transportation, accommodations, dining and entertainment. But when you're navigating onboard expenses, there's one place where the spending can add up quickly: drinks.
The Carnival Cheers package takes care of drinks by covering almost all of your beverage consumption (alcoholic or otherwise) under one fixed price per day. It can save you money on your next cruise if you're planning to, well, drink like you're on a cruise.
Other cruise lines offer tiered drink packages , breaking out their standard alcoholic selection from the top-shelf liquors. With Carnival Cruise Line's Cheers drink package, however, you get almost all alcoholic drinks up to $20 each.

To help you decide whether to book the Carnival Cheers package, we'll cover how much it costs, which drinks are included (and perhaps more importantly, which aren't) and whether it's the best option to help you stick to your beverage budget. Plus, we'll show you how to break down whether you're getting a good value based on how much you expect to drink on an average day.
What's included in the Carnival Cheers drink package?
First, let's clarify which beverages are already included in your standard Carnival cruise fare. Non-bottled water, lemonade, unsweetened iced tea, hot chocolate, non-specialty coffee and tea, juices (orange, tomato, apple or grapefruit) and regular, skim and chocolate milk are all available to cruise guests at no additional charge.
Carnival's Cheers package includes all spirits, cocktails, beer and wine by the glass, up to $20 each, plus these additional nonalcoholic options:
- Smoothies, juices and milkshakes
- Specialty coffee and tea
- Virgin drinks, including zero-proof frozen cocktails
- Energy drinks
- Standard 500-milliliter water bottles and other nonalcoholic bottled beverages
- Large water bottles in the dining room and specialty restaurants
The drink package also includes a 25% discount on any spirit or wine by the glass over the $20 limit, bottles of wine and Champagne, and beverage seminars and classes.

The package covers or discounts nearly everything you might want to drink on board, but there are some exceptions. Here's what's not included:
- Bottles of alcohol (aside from beer)
- Large shareable drinks like pitchers, tubes and buckets
- Drinks in souvenir glasses
- Double shots and floaters (because it's like ordering two drinks at once)
- Drinks offered at the gangway or at any port of call, including the cruise line's private islands
- Room service or minibar drinks
- Drinks from automated wine dispensers
Gratuities are also included with the Cheers drink package because you'll be paying an 18% service charge on top of the package price. If you're ordering drinks while within U.S. waters at a port or before embarking from your home port, you will still be charged tax. For example, if you order a $10 drink and the local tax is 10%, you'll be charged $1 for tax but not for the drink itself.
How much does Carnival's drink package cost?
The Carnival Cheers package price starts at $59.95 per person, per day when you purchase it online before the cruise, plus an 18% service charge. It's $64.95 per person, per day (plus the 18% service charge) if you wait until you're on board to purchase Carnival's drink package. Early planners save a little less than 10% by preordering.
If one person in your cabin purchases the Cheers package, every adult age 21 or over in the same room must also do so. The rule aims to keep you from sharing free drinks while paying for only one package. Carnival's terms state there are no exceptions to this rule, and when we contacted the Carnival team, they confirmed that includes pregnant adults.

You have to purchase the package for the duration of the cruise. If you wait until you're on board to buy the package, you must purchase it on the first day of your sailing. You cannot try out the package for a single day or start it midway through the cruise — unless you're sailing from New York or Texas, where drink packages get activated at 6 a.m. on the second day of the cruise due to local laws. The Carnival Cheers package isn't offered on two-day cruises.
If you're looking for a Carnival Cheers promo code for a drink package discount or a free drink package deal, these offers aren't widely available. Carnival might send out targeted offers to certain members of its VIFP Club loyalty program and casino guests based on their travel and spending history with the cruise line.
To activate a pre-purchased Cheers drink package, go to the Casino Bar when you get on board. Otherwise, you can purchase the package at various bar locations on the ship. The bartender will give you a sticker to place on your Sail & Sign card so servers and bartenders know you have the package.
What's the Carnival drink package limit?
If you plan on making the most of the Carnival Cheers package, you'll find a generous drink limit of 15 alcoholic beverages per day (and a value limit of $20 per alcoholic drink, as we mentioned earlier).
That's 15 alcoholic drinks per 24-hour period running from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, so late-night partiers can't take advantage of bonus drinks after the clock strikes midnight. If anyone looks like they're drinking beyond their personal limits — even if they haven't reached 15 — staff members are trained not to serve guests who look intoxicated.
The package does not place a daily limit on sodas and other nonalcoholic beverages.
Drinks must be ordered one at a time (whether alcoholic or not), with a wait time of five minutes between drink orders. Carnival sets these rules to prevent you from ordering drinks for cruisers who haven't purchased a drink package. So what happens when you want to order a round of drinks for friends? The first drink will count toward your Cheers package limit, and the rest will be charged to your account.
Is the Carnival Cheers package worth it?
Whether the drink package is worth it on Carnival depends on how much alcohol you plan to drink — and which kind. Are you more of a beer drinker, or are you into wine, spirits and cocktails? Beer is generally cheaper, so it would take more drinks per day to add up to the daily value of the Cheers package.
If you have multiple sea days during your sailing, you'll likely get more value from your package since there's more time on board to drink. Otherwise, on port days, you'll need to get your drinks in at breakfast, dinner and late-night bar-hopping.

Based on the starting price of drinks on board, you can get your money's worth by drinking roughly six cocktails, eight glasses of wine or 10 beers each day — and that doesn't include the water bottles, specialty coffees or sodas you'd surely order, too.
Most people mix it up, but you can do the math to see how your likely drink orders will stack up. Here are the starting prices for drinks on board, according to Carnival:
- Beer: starting at $6.50 (mostly 16 ounces)
- Wine by the glass: starting at $9.50
- Mixed drinks: $7.50 to $20
- Specialty cocktails: starting at $10.50 (excluding souvenir glassware and premium selections)
- Soft drinks: $2.75
- Specialty coffee: $2.50 to $4.25
- Energy drinks: $4.95
- Water (San Benedetto bottled water and coconut water): $1.50 to $5
In other words, you'll save money if you and the other adults in your cabin plan to drink your fair share of alcoholic beverages every day. If you're a moderate drinker — who'd order three or four alcoholic drinks and a handful of nonalcoholic beverages in a day — or if you drink but your cabinmate doesn't, it's probably not worth getting the beverage package.
Even if you're a caffeine fiend who drinks coffee and soda all day, it's hard to recoup the costs of the Carnival Cheers package on nonalcoholic beverages alone.
If you're under 21 or don't drink alcohol, you might want to consider the Bottomless Bubbles package for soft drinks. Carnival's all-inclusive soda program covers all soft drinks and juices and costs $6.95 per day for children and $9.50 per day for adults (plus the 18% service charge). It doesn't include other nonalcoholic beverages, such as bottled water and specialty coffee; drinks ordered through room service and the minibar also are not included.
There's another way to think about the value of the Cheers package. Some people are looking for the unquantifiable peace of mind that comes with not worrying about drink costs adding up at every turn. If that's you, creating a more all-inclusive experience on board might justify the cost of the package, even if you don't break even with drink prices.
What are other ways to get free or cheap drinks on Carnival?
If you've decided the Carnival Cheers package isn't worth the cost, you might still want some tips on scoring free or cheaper drinks during your cruise. Here are our top tips for drinking for less on a Carnival cruise ship.
- Hit the casino. You can get free drinks if you spend enough time playing in the casino. Once you earn enough casino points in Carnival's players club, you can order cocktails, beer, wine and even sodas for free while you're gaming.
- Dine in a specialty restaurant on night one. You can get a free or half-price bottle of wine at some of Carnival's signature restaurants if you make a reservation for the first night. The cruise line offers one bottle of complimentary house wine per two guests at any onboard steakhouse, Rudi's Seagrill, Il Viaggio, JiJi Asian Kitchen and Cucina del Capitano (except Cucina on Excel-class ships). On both the first and second nights, guests can also receive a 50% discount on wines listed under $100 at all steakhouses, Rudi's Seagrill and Il Viaggio.
- Head to an art auction. Even if you don't consider yourself an art collector, you can walk away from Carnival's art auctions with something else: free Champagne. Check the schedule of onboard activities to find out when the auctions are taking place during your sailing and sip on complimentary bubbly while you watch art aficionados bid on the gallery's artworks. (Drink responsibly, though, so you don't end up bidding on art you never meant to purchase and bring home.)
- Use a coffee punch card. Another place where Carnival rewards passengers with free drinks is the JavaBlue coffee shop. Grab a punch card on your first day, and once you've ordered six specialty coffees or milkshakes, you get one free. As someone who's sailed Carnival often with family members who have coffee running through their veins 24/7, we've found these coffee punch cards to be a nice bonus. Just remember to present the card for a punch with every order, and you can get through six punches pretty quickly if you're ordering multiple coffees or shakes as a group.

There are also a few ways to bring your own drinks on board Carnival for free. Every guest age 21 or over is allowed to bring one 750-milliliter bottle of wine or Champagne in their carry-on on embarkation day. There's a corkage fee of $15 per bottle if you drink it in the main dining room, specialty restaurants or bars, which is why we like to bring Champagne and pop open the bottle in our room for sail away. (Just don't forget to pack a corkscrew!)
Don't think you can get away with buying duty-free alcohol on the ship or at a port and drinking it on board, though. The ship will hold any duty-free purchases for you until disembarkation day.

You can also bring up to a 12-pack of nonalcoholic beverages in 12-ounce cans or cartons. Acceptable beverages include soda, sparkling water, energy drinks, juice and milk.
Bottled waters and soft drinks cannot be brought on board, but you can preorder water bottles to your room through the Carnival website and have them delivered to your stateroom on embarkation day. A 12-pack of standard water bottles (16.9 ounces) costs $9.95 plus an 18% delivery fee, an eight-pack of large 1.5-liter bottled water costs $20 plus the delivery fee and single 1.5-liter water bottles cost $3.95 each plus delivery.
Bottom line
If you and your cabinmates (this is key) are ready to drink it up on your Carnival cruise — and our bet is you are if you're reading this story — the Carnival Cheers drink package could save you money by capping your daily beverage spend at $64.95 per person, per day (plus gratuity). Use Carnival's average drink prices listed above to calculate your expected cost of drinks each day and see if it would come out to more than the price of the package.
But if you're more of a moderate drinker who can't see yourself partaking in more than five alcoholic drinks per day (or if your cabinmate won't be drinking), skip the drink package on your next sailing and consider other ways to save instead, like bringing your own wine bottles or soft drinks on board and taking advantage of free drinks wherever Carnival offers them.

Due to state laws, the Cheers package can not be sold on the first day of the cruise on departures from Texas or New York. If you have pre-purchased a package, it will only be activated at 6 AM on the second day of the cruise. Drinks purchased on the first day of the cruise will be charged to the guest’s Sail & Sign card in the usual manner.
Can one person get a drink package on Carnival?
Of course, it is never mandatory to buy a drink package. The drink packages on Carnival are add-ons to your cruise vacation. However, there is no sharing of the package or using your package to order drinks for other cruisers.
So, if one guest in the stateroom wishes to purchase a beverage package, each adult in the cabin needs to purchase one as well.
Cruisers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase the Cheers program (alcoholic beverage package).
What are the drink packages on Carnival cruises?
Carnival Cruise Line offers two drink packages. There is the alcoholic drink package, also known as the Cheers! Beverage Program. There is also the unlimited soda program, called the Bottomless Bubbles package.

How much is the drink package on Carnival?
- Cheers Package: Starting at $59.95 per person, per day
- Bottomless Bubbles: Starting at $6.95 per child or $9.50 per adult, per day
How do you get the best deal on a Carnival drink package?
You can save 10% on your Carnival drink package by purchasing before you sail.
How many drinks do you get with the Carnival drink package?
Soda and other non-alcoholic beverages are unlimited; however, you can not consume more than 15 alcoholic drinks per 24 hour period (6 AM to 6 AM).
No matter what package you choose, you can only get one drink at a time with a 5 minute wait time between orders. There are no double shots as that is considered ordering two drinks at once.
If guests purchase drinks for friends, one drink will count towards the Cheers package and the remaining drinks will be charged to the guest’s Sail and Sign account.
Of course, staff do have the right to refuse you bar service if you are intoxicated. Knowing your limits is just as important on a cruise ship as it is during your regular life!
What drinks are included in the Carnival drink packages?
When it comes to a Carnival drink package, cruisers can select from a number of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Below, we detail what is included in the drink packages on Carnival.
Cheers Program
Carnival Cruise Line offers only one alcoholic drink package, known as the Cheers Beverage Program. Many cruisers refer to this as the unlimited drink package, as it includes essentially all alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks for a flat daily rate.
The pricing of this package starts at $59.95 per person, per day (plus gratuity).
This plan covers all alcoholic beverages, including beers, wine and champagne by the glass, and cocktails and spirits up to $20. This also includes the self-serve beer stations.
Further, this Carnival drink package also includes soda, virgin cocktails, juices, specialty coffees and teas, milkshakes, energy drinks, Powerade and Vitamin Water, and 500ml bottled water.
The Cheers Program also entitles cruisers to a 25% discount off of any drink costing more than the $20 allotment, wine and champagne by the bottle, and beverage seminars and classes.
However, there are some exclusions to the Cheers Program. This includes beverages sold in souvenir glasses and bottles of liquor. Also, drinks sold at the gangway, through room service, or the mini-bar are also not included in this beverage package. Sharing cocktails, wine machines, pitchers, and buckets are not included either.
While there is a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks with this Carnival drink package, soda and other non-alcoholic beverages do not count towards this limit.
Summary of what’s included in the Cheers drink package:
- All spirits, cocktails, beer, and wine by the glass with a $20 or less menu price
- Sodas, Zero-Proof frozen cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffee, hot tea, 500ml bottled water, and other non-alcoholic bottled beverages
- Packaged water in the main dining room and specialty restaurants
- 25% discount off the menu price for any spirit or wine by the glass above $20
- 25% discount off the menu price for wine and champagne by the bottle
- 25% discount off beverage seminars and classes
Bottomless Bubbles
Bottomless Bubbles is Carnival Cruise Line’s unlimited soda package. For one flat fee, cruisers can enjoy all the fountain soda and juices they want with this package.
The pricing of this package starts at $6.95 per child (17 years of age and younger) or $9.50 per adult (plus 18% gratuity).
Like the alcoholic drink package, you can only order one drink at a time, either a 16 ounce glass of soda or a 10 ounce glass of juice.
Soda choices include Pepsi products. For juices, cruisers have the option of Orange Juice, Cranberry Juice, Tomato Juice, Pineapple Juice, and Grapefruit Juice.
Again, like the Cheers Program, this package does NOT work off the ship, even at Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays. Bottled water and specialty coffee are also not part of this package. Other exclusions include beverages sold in souvenir glasses, beverages sold at the gangway, and room services orders.
Summary of what’s included in the Bottomless Bubbles drink package:
- Soft Drinks/Soda (Pepsi products)
- Juices: Orange Juice, Cranberry Juice, Tomato Juice, Pineapple Juice and Grapefruit Juice

Is the Carnival Drink Package Worth It?
This brings us back to the original question, are Carnival drink packages a good value? Essentially, the question is whether you will consume enough beverages to make the purchase “worth it”.
Below are the average costs of the different beverages within each category. Using this chart, you can do the quick math to see if you would routinely hit the daily drink costs of the above packages.
Ultimately, you need to know your own habits to determine if the drink packages on Carnival will be a good value during your cruise.
Other considerations include the length of the cruise and how many ports of call are on the itinerary.
For instance, will you be able to sustain the same drinking pattern over the course of a 10-day or 14-day cruise? If your cruise is port intensive, will you be on the ship enough to make good use of your Carnival drink package?
The drink packages on Carnival certainly do offer convenience, as you never have to worry about the bar tab at the end of the cruise! They also make your cruise feel more all inclusive.
While we don’t go overboard with alcoholic drinks, we do consume plenty of bottled water, specialty coffee, Vitamin Water/Powerade, and the occasional soda. Combining our alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink purchases, we usually recognize a cost savings with the beverage package.
Other Considerations
Of course, if you wish to forego a beverage package, you can always pay a la carte for your drinks purchased on the ship.
You can also purchase items pre-cruise via your cruise planner to be delivered to your stateroom. The prices for bottled water are very reasonable on Carnival Cruise Line when compared to some competitor brands.
Further, on embarkation day, guests are allowed to bring onboard a maximum of 12, 12-ounce cans/cartons of non-alcoholic beverages per person in their carry-on. Guests 21 years of age and older may also bring onboard one 750ml bottle of unopened wine or champagne in their carry-on luggage.

Thanks for all of this info. My wife and I will be taking our first cruise on the Carnival Panorama in May.
I like the drink package but do not agree with the pricing structure. For instance on a five day cruise you are charged for the day you leave the ship and you must leave by 8 A.M. why are you charging for that day? In addition the first day you don’t board until lunch so half that day is gone. I think a 5 day cruise should be based on a 4 day pricing structure, a seven day cruise should be a six day pricing structure, etc.
On a 5day cruise you only use for 4 days, so why do we get charged for 5 days.
Our first cruise (4ngt/5 day) we kept a conservative tab on drink expenditures and did not buy the package. We ended up spending between $80.00 -100.00 more then the unlimited Royal Caribbean Drink Pkg. This trip booked for 21 we have bought the DP for 50% off which means we should be $180.00 ahead-roughly speaking. In our case the UDP is a great bargain.
It’s infuriating to me that Carnival does not have a non-alchoholic refreshment package like Royal Carribean. I would love to not have to pay the more expensive price for a drink package that includes alchohol that I will not be consuming! Royal carribean offers this exact package and I love it. It’s a bit more than the soda package but obviously isnt as much as the packages that include alchohol. It’s about $25 a day and you can actually use it on their private island. Come on Carribean!!
They do. It’s called “Bottomless Bubbles” and its $8.50 a day. “Enjoy ice-cold refreshments during meals, during shows, during, well… anytime you want with Bottomless Bubbles. This unlimited program lets you indulge in all-you-can-drink soda and juice for the full length of your cruise. Sweet! Bottomless Bubbles is available for purchase at the Lobby, Casino and Pool Bars. Restrictions apply.”
But the BB package does not include the mocktails, eg virgin mary. Other cruise lines offer soda, juice and mocktail packages.
oops, sorry. I meant, come on Carnival.
Is carnival “considering” allowing the Cheers package on the private island (Half Moon Cay) for 2021 cruises? We have booked the Christmas Bahamas cruise on the Dream in December 2021. BTW- can’t wait to get back cruising again!!!!
Hey we are on the same cruise . It’s our first time cruising.
Do they have non-alcoholic beer on board? If so, is it included in the Cheers package? I can’t find any info on it and I’ve been on hold for over an hour with Carnival Customer Service.
Yes. They have Buckler and O’Douls.
does carnival offer seltzers (trulys, white claw, high noon, etc…) on board?
Interesting… If I purchase the BB package (for 4nights/5days), I am losing out. I cannot board the first day until after 12pm, I cannot take advantage of my BB purchase on either private island, and the cruise is over at 8am the fifth day. Right?
This info is not correct. if there are more than one person in the cabin that wants the cheers package everyone has to purchase it. Not available for only one person. Unless the person is underage. They do this so no one will share drinks. However we all know it is all about the money.
Why wouldn’t it be “All about the money”? It’s a business, not a charity.
Well on a 5-day cruise you actually only get 4 days use of drink pkg but get charged for 5 days. Doesn’t make sense. We disembark on 5th day.

Table of Contents
Carnival Cruise Drink Packages
Carnival Cruise Line offers a simple choice between two drink packages.
Carnival’s straightforward approach to its beverage packages makes choosing the best package for your needs easy. Choosing a beverage package comes down to whether or not you drink alcohol.
The CHEERS! package is the “all-inclusive drink package” because it includes virtually every drink onboard the ship, up to a $20 value. Bottomless Bubbles is Carnival’s non-alcoholic beverage package.
CHEERS! Beverage Package
Carnival Cruise Line’s Cheers! Beverage Package is the cruise line’s “ all-inclusive package, ” offering a range of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages for one flat price.
The Cheers! package starts at just $59.95 per person per day for each day of your cruise. It’s important to know that there’s an 18% gratuity added when you buy the package.
We recommend purchasing the CHEERS! program in advance of sailing because package prices are higher on the ship. If you wait to buy it once onboard, the price is $64.95 per person per day plus the 18% service charge.
You can pre-purchase the package until 10:00 pm the night before you embark on the cruise ship.
Carnival’s CHEERS! beverage package is arguably the most comprehensive package you’ll find on mainstream cruises. There are hardly any restrictions on what drinks you can get, and the maximum price per drink is a generous $20—higher than many other cruise lines.
The package covers almost every drink from the Carnival drink menu .
One important thing to mention is that Carnival has a policy limiting the number of alcoholic beverages you can buy. The limit is 15 alcoholic drinks in a 24-hour period , from 6 am to 6 am.
While this restriction has raised a few eyebrows among some passengers, in our experience, it’s rarely an issue. The majority of people never come close to the 15-drink limit.
According to Carnival’s website , Carnival’s CHEERS! beverage package includes the following:
- Soft drinks
- Spirits & cocktails
- Zero-proof frozen cocktails
- Wine by the glass
- Energy drinks
- Specialty coffee and tea
- Bottles of water
- Milkshakes (where available)
- 25% discount on spirit or wine by the glass above $20.00
- 25% discount on wine and champagne bottles
- 25% discount on beverage seminars and classes
Although the Carnival CHEERS! drink package is very inclusive, but there are some restrictions. For example, the drink package doesn’t include minibar or room service purchases.
The CHEERS! package doesn’t include the following:
- Beverages promoted and sold in souvenir glasses
- Bottles of liquor
- Drinks offered on the gangway
- Beverages purchased through room service, minibars, or in-stateroom beverage programs
- Sharing cocktails, pitchers, buckets, floaters, and tubes
- Self-serve wine from the Enomatic wine machines
- All other beverage-related programs, including merchandise, cigars, and cigarettes
- Drinks purchased at port or private islands, including Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay

If your cruise embarks from Texas or New York, it’s important to know that state laws prevent you from using your drink package on the first day of your itinerary.
Instead, any beverages you buy on the first day are billed to your onboard account. Your Cheers package becomes active at 6 am on the second day of your itinerary.
But don’t worry.
You’re not charged for the package on the first day. So, despite the little delay, you still get full value for your purchase.
Bottomless Bubbles
With Carnival’s Bottomless Bubbles drink package, you can indulge in unlimited soda and juice for the entire length of your cruise.
Bottomless Bubbles is just $6.95 per day for kids and $9.50 per day for adults. Remember that an 18% service charge is added at the time of purchase.
However, there are a few things this package doesn’t cover. The unlimited soda package doesn’t include bottled water, hot drinks, room service, mini bar beverages, drinks offered at the gangway, or alcoholic drinks. But with the amount of soda and juice you can enjoy, you’ll find it provides great value and convenience.

Carnival Drink Prices
When deciding whether or not to purchase the drink package, it is a good idea to calculate how much you would be spending if you bought the individual drinks rather than the package.
Knowing the prices before you cruise can help you decide if purchasing a drink package makes financial sense. If you spend less money buying individual drinks, the package might not be worth it for you.
Here are the average prices for drinks on a Carnival cruise:
Carnival Cruise Line provides a variety of complimentary beverages, including:
- Coffee (regular or decaffeinated)
- Hot chocolate
- Chocolate Milk
- Milk (regular or skim)
How to Get a Discount on the Drink Package
Carnival’s drink packages rarely, if ever, go on sale. We’re not saying they won’t ever go on sale in the future, but we’ve never seen them sell at a discount.
We recommend purchasing the package before your cruise begins because the price of the package is higher when purchased on the cruise ship.
You save 10% when you pre-purchase the package. The savings add up to more than $50 over a week-long cruise.
You can pre-purchase the beverage package up to 10:00 pm the day before embarkation and take advantage of the savings.
Are Carnival’s Drinks Packages Worth It?
Generally speaking, the CHEERS! drink package is worth the price if you consume six or more drinks per day.
However, the exact number depends on the cost of the drinks you order.
If you’re considering purchasing a drink package, it’s best to do the math to make sure it makes financial sense. For most passengers, we think you’ll actually spend less money when you purchase individual drinks.
One often-forgotten consideration is whether you will be getting off the ship at ports of call.
While exploring the port, you won’t be visiting the poolside bar to purchase drinks throughout the day, but you will still be paying for the drink package. And you can’t use the drink package at ports of call.
Additionally, if one person purchases the drink package, all adults sharing a cabin must purchase the same plan.
So, while the drink package might be worth it for you, you’ll need to consider the drinking habits of your travel companions.
Before purchasing the drink package, you’ll also want to consider how many drinks you’ll have each day and how much time you will spend on the ship.

Carnival Drink Package FAQs
Is there a daily limit of how many drinks you can order.
Yes. Carnival allows passengers to purchase up to 15 alcoholic drinks in a 24-hour period (from 6:00 am to 6:00 am). The limit only applies to alcoholic beverages. So feel free to indulge in unlimited juice and soda.
How Many Drinks Can You Buy at One Time?
You can order only one drink at a time when using your beverage package. The restriction will likely prevent passengers from sharing the drinks package with other guests, which is against Carnivals’ terms of use.
Can the Drink Packages be Used at Carnival’s Private Islands?
No, passengers cannot use Carnival’s drink packages at either of their private islands ; Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay. Any drinks purchased at the private islands are charged back to your Sail & Sign card.
Does Carnival Have a Specialty Coffee Package?
Carnival does not offer a Specialty Coffee Package. The CHEERS! drink package includes specialty coffees. You can purchase specialty coffees individually if you don’t have the CHEERS! package. Regular coffee and hot tea are free and can be found in the main dining room, buffet, or room service.
Does Bottomless Bubbles Include Coffee?
Carnival’s Bottomless Bubbles drink package does not include specialty coffee. Regular drip coffee is complimentary on Carnival Cruise Line.
Do I Have to Buy the Drink Package for the Entire Cruise?
Yes, you must purchase the drinks package for the entire cruise. You cannot buy the package for individual days.
The only exemption to this policy is for Carnival cruises that depart from New York or Texas when you aren’t allowed to use the drink package on the first day of the cruise. Sailings departing from Texas and New York have the drink package activated at 6 am on the second day of the cruise.
Can Just One Person Buy the Drink Package?
Carnival’s policy mandates that if one adult purchases the drinks package, all adults sharing the stateroom must purchase the same package.
If one adult in the stateroom cannot drink for medical or religious reasons, you can call Carnival and ask for an exemption. Exemptions aren’t guaranteed, but we have met passengers who didn’t have to purchase the drink package for their travel companion.
Can I Share the Drink Package?
You cannot share either Carnival drink package. Carnival mandates that every adult sharing a cabin must purchase the same drink package to prevent sharing.
If a cruise ship employee catches you sharing the drink package with other passengers, the cruise line will cancel your package without a refund.
Are Wine And Champagne By The Bottle Included In The Drinks Package?
No. Bottles of wine and champagne are not included in the drink package.
But, guests can purchase bottles of wine or champagne at a 25% discount as part of the CHEERS! drink program.
Can I Bring Drinks on a Carnival Cruise?
Each adult can bring one 750ml bottle of wine or champagne in their carry-on luggage on embarkation day. Further, guests can bring 12 sealed, unopened cans or cartons of non-alcoholic beverages.
You can consume the wine or champagne in your stateroom. But, if you want to drink it at a bar or restaurant, Carnival charges a corkage fee of $15 per bottle.
Can You Get Free Drinks in the Casino?
You can get free drinks in the onboard cruise ship casino when you collect 1500 points while playing. After collecting the required points, you’ll receive a “Drink On Us” card, which allows you to get free drinks while playing.
You earn one casino point for every $2.50 you play on the slot machine.
So, you’ll need to spend $3750 at the Carnival casino to get free drinks. And once you accumulate 5000 points, you’ll also receive a Drink On Us card for your next Carnival cruise vacation.
It’s important to note that you can only use the Drink on Us card while you are actively gambling.
We don’t recommend gambling for the sole purpose of winning “free” drinks. You’ll likely spend more money playing than the cost of the drinks. But the Drink on Us card is a great benefit if you plan on playing.
Do Carnival cruise ships serve Coke or Pepsi?
Carnival cruise ships serve Pepsi and other PepsiCo sodas such as Mountain Dew and Bubly. You won’t find Coke or Coca-cola beverages on a Carnival cruise. Since January 2020, only Pepsi and PepsiCo drinks are available on Carnival.
Is the Carnival CHEERS Package Refundable?
If you opt to purchase the Cheers package before your cruise and then realize you no longer require it, you have the ability to receive a refund up until 9:00 pm on the night prior to the start of your cruise journey.
However, you can’t get a refund for the drink package after the designated time.
Can You Purchase the Drink Package With Onboard Credit?
Yes, you can use your onboard credit on Carnival Cruise Line to purchase either drink package.
We don’t recommend using onboard credit to purchase the drink package because you can only use your onboard credit on the ship. That means you’ll be paying the higher price of the package compared to purchasing it in advance.

Is tea included with bottomless bubbles or cheers?
Regular tea is complimentary for all guests, along with regular drip coffee. But specialty tea costs extra and is included in the CHEERS! drink package but not the Bottomless Bubbles beverage package.
If you use up your 15 drink maximum in the package, can you purchase additional alcoholic beverages at regular price?
Unfortunately, the 15-drink limit applies to all alcoholic beverage purchases regardless of how the drinks are purchased. Whether you purchase the drinks individually or through the CHEERS!beverage package, you may only purchase 15 alcoholic drinks between 6 am and 6 am. You can purchase unlimited non-alcoholic drinks.
If I buy the Cheers drink package, will It be included to have a pot of coffee delivered to my room each morning for my morning coffee time on the balcony?
Hi Tammy. Regular drip coffee is included in Carnival’s complimentary room service menu. You can order drip coffee during daytime service hours (6 am to 10 am) at no extra charge.
On the cheers package do you get charged for the day you are getting off the ship considering you usually get off in the morning
Hey William. Yes, you will be charged for every day you sail on the cruise, even on days you get off the ship. This is a major consideration when deciding whether or not to purchase the package, as you won’t be getting the full value on those days.
Here’s another article to help you decide if the drink package is worth it , with other considerations you need to consider.
Hi Marcello,
We are planning a trip to Mexico with some friends on the Carnival Breeze scheduled for this fall (2022). I know you are allowed to bring 1 sealed/unopened bottle (750 ml) of wine or champagne per person at embarkation but can you also purchase and bring a bottle of wine from ports of call (Progreso and/or Cozumel) for consumption on the ship? This was not an issue on Norwegian Cruise Line as long as the corkage fee was paid upon re-boarding at ports of call.
BTW – Thank you so much for all the tips you provide to us cruisers, very much appreciated. I always advise friends and family that are new to cruising to make absolutely sure they do their homework because it can be quite an inconvenience and possibly costly if not prepared.
Hi Rick. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to drink any alcohol you bought in port until after your cruise. As per Carnival’s beverage policy, guests 21 and older can bring “at the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day only, one 750-ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne, per person, in their carry-on luggage.” The cruise line holds any alcohol you bring onto the ship from the port until it is returned to you on disembarkation day. You can read the full policy at the following link under the heading “What is Carnival’s Liquor & Beverage Policy?”: https://www.carnival.com/help#section-1
Thank you so much for the kind words! Victoria and I began this site when we were planning our first post-pandemic cruise. We were so excited to be traveling again that our family became tired of hearing our fun facts and cruise trivia. It is great to hear that we are providing a service to fellow cruise travelers while sharing our love for cruise ship travel!
Hey Marcello, You mention the 15 drink limit from 6am to 6 pm…are you saying the drink package stops at 6pm? So any “nightlife” drinks are not included?
Hi Sean. The drink package has a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks during a 24-hour period from 6:00 am to 6:00 am the next day. The limit only applies to alcoholic beverages.
Hi Marcello, I have contacted Carnival customer service regarding a guest in my stateroom unable to drink due to religious beliefs. I inquired about pre-purchasing the cheers package for myself and another guest in the room and explained the third guest was not able to drink due to her religion. They have stated that they do not have any exemptions for the cheers package. Can you please direct me to whom I need to contact?
Unfortunately, I don’t know of anyone you can contact. I know some friends who’ve been able to get an exemption from the policy and others that weren’t successful. Ultimately, it’s up to the cruise line to decide whether or not they will allow any exemptions to their rules. You could call back again and speak with another member of customer support, but there is no guarantee that they will exempt your friend from purchasing the drink package.

CHEERS! Beverage Program Q&As
What is the price for individual drinks on board? Sample of beverage prices - prices and product availability are subject to change without notice.
- Beer: starting at $6.50 (mostly 16-ounces)
- Wine by the glass: starting at $9.50
- Mixed Drinks: $7.50 - $20.00
- Specialty Cocktails: starting at $10.50 (excluding souvenir glassware and premium selections)
- Soft Drinks: $2.75
- Specialty Coffees: $2.50 - $4.25
- Energy Drinks: $4.95
- Water (San Benedetto bottled water and Coconut Water): $1.50 - $5.00
I understand there is a maximum of 15 drinks a day for the CHEERS! program. With the enhanced program, do non-alcoholic drinks count toward this total? Sodas and other applicable non-alcoholic beverages remain unlimited and will not be counted toward the 15 alcoholic beverages limit, and all other policies and procedures remain the same. Guests are expected to enjoy alcohol responsibly and staff members are trained not to serve guests who appear to be intoxicated. Do you have procedures in place that keep guests from drinking too much? Carnival has a number of procedures in place to monitor guests’ alcohol consumption and bartenders are trained to look for signs of intoxication and will discontinue serving guests who appear to be intoxicated. Certain flags have been built into the system that are designed to monitor guests’ alcohol consumption and encourage responsible use of the program. Does the package have to be purchased for the entire week or can it be purchased on a daily/a la carte basis? The beverage package can only be purchased for the entire voyage at a rate of $59.95 USD per person, per day plus 18% service charge, via Carnival’s website and $64.95 USD per person, per day plus18% service charge, if purchased once on board. Why aren’t full bottles of wine and champagne included in the enhanced program? The program allows guests to purchase drinks on an individual basis at a convenient flat rate and not purchase multiple drinks at one time or bottles of wine and champagne. The program does include a feature that allows guests to purchase full bottles of wine and champagne at a 25 percent discount. I don’t drink alcohol. Am I still able to purchase the Bottomless Bubbles all-inclusive soda program? While guests who purchase the enhanced CHEERS! program receive all of the benefits of the Bottomless Bubbles program, CHEERS! does not replace the Bottomless Bubbles soda program which continues to be available to children at a cost of $6.95 USD per person, per day and adults at a cost of $9.50 USD per person, per day plus 18% service charge, Please note : If one guest (21 or older) in a stateroom purchases CHEERS!, then each adult assigned to the same stateroom must also purchase the program.

Carnival Cruise Line Drink Packages: The Ultimate Guide (2023)
By: Author Carrie Ann Karstunen
Posted on Published: July 3, 2020 - Last updated: August 15, 2023
Mainstream cruise lines, including Carnival , don’t offer many complimentary drink options on the ship. So for many cruisers, the bar bill ends up being a large portion of their vacation budget. If you’re cruising on Carnival, a Carnival Cruise Line drink package lets you pre-plan your drink budget so you’re not hit with a huge bar tab at the end of your cruise!
Carnival offers drink packages for all ages, at various price points. But is a Carnival beverage package worth it? I’ll help you decide if you should buy one and which drink package is right for you .
Carnival last updated its beverage package pricing in May 2022, and also made some small changes to the program in 2023. I’ll explain what each package currently includes and how much it will cost for your cruise.
Carnival Cruise Line drink packages available for 2023 and beyond
Although Carnival offers a small selection of complimentary beverages around the clock (tap water, non-specialty coffee, hot tea, hot chocolate, lemonade or juice drinks, and iced tea), you might want to expand your drink options without having to pay each time you order.
Unlike some cruise lines that offer a wide range of drink packages, Carnival makes their prepaid beverage packages simple. There are only two options: one for soft drinks only, and one for both alcohol and soft drinks.
Carnival’s Bottomless Bubbles
Bottomless Bubbles is Carnival’s prepaid soda package, available for both children and adults. This option includes all-you-can-drink fountain soda, sparkling water, and fruit juices.
The cost for Bottomless Bubbles is $6.95 per day for children under 18, and $9.50 per day for adults age 18 and up. An 18% gratuity is added to the price at the time of package purchase.
Back in January 2020, Carnival began the switch from serving Coke products to Pepsi products. Today, all of Carnival’s fleet exclusively serves Pepsi products.
Tip: If you’re a die-hard Coke fan, you can always carry on a limited amount of your favorite Coke products in cans. Learn more in How to Bring Your Own Drinks on a Cruise .
Carnival’s Pepsi lineup is as follows:
- Pepsi Zero Sugar
- Caffeine Free Pepsi
- Diet Pepsi Caffeine Free
- Sierra Mist
- Sierra Mist Zero Sugar
- Mug Root Beer
- Mountain Dew
- Diet Mountain Dew
- Bubly Sparkling Water (Lime, Grapefruit, or Orange)
Dr. Pepper and Diet Dr. Pepper are also usually added to the list for cruises departing the ports of Galveston and New Orleans.
Tip: You can also buy a reusable Carnival soft drink tumbler for $5.95 with Bottomless Bubbles ($9.95 without the program). Consider waiting to buy your soft drink tumbler once the ship is in international waters to avoid paying sales tax at the embarkation port.
Fruit juice options include:
- Orange Juice
- Cranberry Juice
- Tomato Juice
- Pineapple Juice
- Grapefruit Juice
For a 7-day cruise, Carnival’s Bottomless Bubbles drink package would cost $57.41 for a child and $78.47 for an adult, including gratuities.
Note: Bottomless Bubbles is not always available on European itineraries.
Carnival’s CHEERS! Beverage Program
CHEERS! is Carnival Cruise Line’s all-inclusive beverage package. Available for guests age 21 and over, CHEERS! includes a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, mocktails, and an expanded range of non-alcoholic drinks compared to Bottomless Bubbles.
The cost for CHEERS! when you pre-purchase before your cruise is $59.95 per person, per day, plus an 18% gratuity.
If you purchase CHEERS! on board, the cost is $64.95 per person, per day, plus an 18% gratuity.
Carnival’s CHEERS! package includes:
- All cocktails, spirits, and beer and wine by the glass with a menu price of $20.00 or lower
- Soda, mocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffees and teas, 500ml bottled water, and other non-alcoholic bottled beverages
- Self-service beer stations
- Large bottles of water in the dining rooms and specialty restaurants
CHEERS! also includes all soft drinks in the Bottomless Bubbles package plus:
- Pure Leaf Unsweetened Black Tea
- Pure Leaf Sweet Tea
- Gatorade (Lemon-Lime or Fruit Punch)
- Propel (Berry, Grape, or Kiwi Strawberry)
- Starbucks Frappuccino
- Starbucks Double Shot Espresso
Guests with the CHEERS! package also are eligible for a 25% discount off spirits or wine by the glass above $20.00, wine and champagne by the bottle, and beverage seminars and classes.
For a 7-day cruise, Carnival’s CHEERS! drink package would cost $495.19 if you pre-purchase it, and $536.49 if you buy it on board (I’ve included gratuities in this calculation.)
FAQ about Carnival Cruise Line drink packages
If you’ve never cruised with Carnival before, or it’s been a while since your last cruise, you probably have some general questions about how the Carnival Cruise Line drink packages work.
I’ll answer the most common ones here. If you have a question that I haven’t answered, just drop it in the comments and I’ll be happy to answer it.
Do you need to tip for drinks purchased with a Carnival beverage package?
All Carnival drink packages have an extra 18% gratuity on top of the list price. So, you won’t need to tip your bartender or server each time you order a drink with your beverage package – you’ve already pre-paid your tips.
However, you can always add an extra tip for your favorite bartenders, if you choose.
Do you need to pay tax on your drinks?
When you’re out at sea in international waters, you don’t need to worry about paying tax on any of your drinks. But when you’re in port, some local authorities require cruise lines to collect tax on the menu price of any beverages you buy.
Taxes will be charged to your on board account if you buy drinks one-by-one or use a beverage package.
The tax percentage varies by port, but it’s never a huge amount—generally somewhere between 5-10% of the cost of each drink. If a jurisdiction charges tax, it will be charged on each drink when the ship is in port and in its territorial waters.
Do Carnival drink packages work on their private islands?
Carnival’s Bottomless Bubbles and CHEERS! packages can’t be used to order beverages on the private islands of Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays .
How old do you have to be to buy an alcoholic beverage package on Carnival?
You must be age 21 or over to purchase or use the CHEERS! package on all Carnival cruises, regardless of the legal drinking age at any ports you might visit.
For those turning 21 during the cruise, you’ll be able to purchase alcohol à la carte with a valid ID starting on your birthday. You won’t be able to purchase a CHEERS! package in the middle of the cruise.
Can you share your Carnival beverage package with another guest?
Carnival issues a sticker for each guest that purchases a beverage package, and the sticker goes on your Sail & Sign card. Only one beverage per sticker will be served at a time.
Carnival (like most other cruise lines today) requires that if one person buys the CHEERS! package, every person 21 and older in the same stateroom must also purchase the package. Cruise lines have implemented this policy to crack down on beverage package sharing.
Many cruise lines will waive this requirement if you don’t drink because of pregnancy, a medical condition, religious beliefs, or if you’re in recovery from substance use disorder. However, Carnival is known to be very strict with this policy. You can try reaching out to Carnival to ask for an exemption, but it’s not very likely that they’ll budge.
How do you buy a Carnival Cruise Line drink package?
Before your cruise, you can pre-purchase Bottomless Bubbles or CHEERS! online at www.carnival.com/Funshops or by calling (800) 522-7648. The cut-off time for online pre-purchase is 11:59 PM EST the day before embarkation. The call center closes at 9:00 PM EST, so their cut-off time is a bit earlier.
Both packages will also be available for purchase on the ship on embarkation day and the first full cruise day. You can get Bottomless Bubbles at the lobby, casino, and pool bars.
Tables will be set up around the ship on embarkation day and the next day where you can buy the CHEERS! package.
Can you buy a Carnival drink package for certain days of the cruise?
It would be nice to pick and choose which days you have a drink package (like sea days only, please!), but once you buy a package you need to buy it for each remaining day of your cruise. Take this into consideration if you have a lot of longer shore excursions when you won’t be on the ship to use the package.
In order to minimize your costs, consider waiting until the second day of your cruise to buy a beverage package. You’ll just need to pay for any drinks you consume on embarkation day.
But, remember that you save 10% if you pre-order the CHEERS! package before your cruise. Do the math to see which option saves more money for your situation.
Does Carnival ever offer a free drink package?
Outside of comped cruises through the casino, I’ve never seen Carnival offer a free beverage package as a perk for booking a cruise. That’s not to say it will never happen, but it’s pretty unlikely. Carnival’s business model is to keep prices low, and for guests to pay for any extras on an à la carte basis.
If you’re looking for a low-priced cruise line that offers free drink packages very consistently, Norwegian is your best bet. Or, if your budget is a bit higher, consider an all-inclusive cruise.
How much are drinks on a Carnival cruise if you buy them individually?
If you’re considering buying a drink package for your first Carnival cruise, you’re probably wondering what the menu prices are if you buy drinks individually.
Here are typical menu prices for a variety of drinks on Carnival:
- Beer: $6 – $8 per glass
- Wine $8 – $14 per glass
- Mixed drinks: $7 – $20
- Soft drinks: $2.50
- Specialty soft drinks: $2 – $5
- Bottled water: $1.25 – $5
Is there a limit to how many drinks you can get per day with a Carnival beverage package?
You’re allowed to drink an unlimited amount of non-alcoholic drinks with both Bottomless Bubbles and the CHEERS! package. (You do need to wait five minutes between drink orders, except if you’re ordering bottled water along with your drink.)
However, you can only have 15 alcoholic drinks per day. That sounds like a lot, but lots of cruisers can (and do!) reach that cap. Bartenders and servers track drink orders on their POS system, so you can always ask how many drinks you’re up to if you lose track!
Once you hit the 15 drinks, you’re not allowed to order more alcohol, even if you try to pay out of pocket. The 24-hour period resets every morning at 6 AM.
Are there any restrictions on where you can use a Carnival drink package?
You can use your Carnival drink package for onboard purchases only. When you’re in port, you can’t use the package off the ship, even on a Carnival-sponsored shore excursion.
Carnival Cruise Line drink packages also don’t apply to drinks ordered through room service or the Interactive TV system, or for beverages from your stateroom’s minibar.
The CHEERS! package also can’t be used for the following alcoholic drinks:
- Drinks in souvenir glasses (but you can ask for the same drink in a regular glass)
- Bottles of liquor
- Drinks offered at the gangway
- Cocktails meant for sharing
- Floaters, pitchers, tubes, or buckets
- Wines from the enomatic wine machines
If your cruise departs from Galveston or New York, the CHEERS! package doesn’t go into effect until 6 AM on the second day of the sailing.
Is it worth it to get a drink package on a Carnival cruise?
When deciding if it’s worth it to buy a drink package on Carnival, it all depends on how much you think you’ll be drinking. If you’re sure you’ll only have a couple of drinks each day, it’s a far better deal to just pay as you go.
For the average cruiser, five alcoholic drinks per day is about where the break-even point is for the CHEERS! package. If you like to drink higher-end wines or spirits, your break-even point could be lower. Remember, the package includes drinks that normally cost up to $20 each!
Your soft drinks, bottled water, and specialty coffees are also included, so factor those costs into your decision as well. Those little purchases can add up over the length of your cruise.
But if you have a cabin-mate who doesn’t drink much, it might not be worth having to buy an expensive package for someone who won’t get their money’s worth.
If you’re a soda drinker, Bottomless Bubbles can be a money-saver. Know you’ll have at least three soft drinks each day? Then it really makes sense to buy this package.

Hi Tammy, great question! Beverage packages are charged to individual passengers, so you won't be forced to pay a double charge if you're a solo traveler in a double-occupancy stateroom. You'll only need to pay for a single CHEERS! package. Happy sailing!

Thank you for a very informative article. Just wondering how Cheers compares to pre-purchasing and having a liter (or two) delivered to the cabin. Also, where could I find a list of higher end spirits available?
Friday 4th of September 2020
Hi Sean, great question! It's definitely cheaper to pre-purchase a bottle, especially if you're drinking basic mixed drinks with one shot and a mixer. If a liter of liquor has 22 shots, and it costs $50-100 per bottle, you can definitely save money. I've never gone this route myself, because I don't spend much time in the stateroom and it's way more convenient to grab a drink from a bar. (You could make yourself a drink in your room and walk around the ship with it, but you'd have to go back to the room each time.) For a list of spirits that Carnival offers, go to https://www.carnival.com/in-room-food-beverages and click on "liquor" on the left. Happy cruising!

Hi Great article and some really good tips but I did read somewhere drinks packages are not available in Europe - Is that correct?
Hi Ally, I'm so glad you liked the tips! I reached out to Carnival just to make sure that nothing has changed. They told me that yes, the Cheers! package is available on European itineraries. I believe that at one point the package couldn't be sold in Europe, so you may have read an article somewhere with that older information. Happy cruising!

I had never heard of this drink package. Sounds like a great deal to chill and relax with a cocktail on hand!!!

Jen, it definitely is! Most cruise lines also sell a similar package (Disney Cruise Line is one of the majors that doesn't). Also, many luxury cruise lines include cocktails, wine and beer in the cruise fare. (My post Which Cruise Lines Are All-Inclusive? covers which luxury lines do and don't include alcohol.) Packages are a great way to save some money and remove the stress of a bar bill at the end of your vacation.

The Cheers! drink package is priced at $59.95 per day for cruises lasting 6 days or more, and $69.95 per day for shorter cruises when purchased online. This package includes all drinks up to $20, with a 25% discount on higher-priced drinks, wine bottles, and seminars. Maximizing Value With Drink Packages
When aiming to maximize value with drink packages on Carnival cruises, it's essential to carefully consider the inclusions, limitations, and pricing structures to make the most of your onboard beverage experience. Here are three key strategies to help you get the most out of your Carnival drink package:
- Understand Package Inclusions : Familiarize yourself with what each package offers. The CHEERS! package includes a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, while the Bottomless Bubbles package is limited to sodas and juices. Knowing the differences will help you choose the package that best suits your preferences.
- Track Consumption : To make the most of your drink package, keep track of your daily consumption, especially if you opt for the CHEERS! package with its 15 alcoholic drink limit per day. Balancing your alcohol consumption with non-alcoholic drinks can help you stay refreshed throughout your cruise.
- Compare Package Prices : Compare the cost of individual drinks to the price of the drink package. If you plan to enjoy several beverages per day, a package may offer better value than purchasing drinks individually, especially considering the 25% discount on pricier drinks with the CHEERS! package.
Beverage Selection in Drink Packages
Transitioning from maximizing value with drink packages, our focus now shifts to the diverse array of beverages available within Carnival cruise drink packages, catering to a wide range of preferences and tastes. Guests can also opt for the Bottomless Bubbles package, which includes unlimited soda and juice, or the Cheers Package for a variety of alcoholic drinks up to a specified value per drink.
It's important to note that wine selections are subject to availability, and a service charge of 18% is added to the beverage charge. These packages come with specific guidelines on usage, such as restrictions on sharing, daily drink limits, and activation details based on the departure location. Carnival ensures that there's something for everyone in their beverage selection within the drink packages.

Carnival Sale Offers Free Drink Packages With Cruises
Are you a Carnival VIFP member? If so, then you might have received an email announcing a new deal that you could want to take advantage of.
Carnival is offering a sale where past guests receive a free CHEERS! drink package for themselves and a guest when they book. The “Free Cheers to You!” sale is valid from now through December 13, 2020. According to the email we received, if you book a qualifying deal, then both you and one travel companion get the drink package included with your cruise.
Considering the drink package runs about $55 per person, per day (before the 18% gratuity is tacked on), this is a great freebie. For reference, including the gratuity, a person traveling on a week-long cruise would pay about $470 in total if they bought the drink package on the ship.
There is some fine print you should know, however. Specifically, Carnival lays out all the following stipulations with the offer:
- Full non-refundable deposit

High Cruise Fares Along With the Drink Package
Before you get too excited, you should know that you’ll see higher rates with this offer than you’d find otherwise. We’ve looked and noticed that cabin prices for this deal are hundreds of dollars higher than the regular prices.
For example, we looked at the price of a 6-day cruise aboard the Carnival Horizon, departing Miami on August 1.
With the “Free Cheers to You!” deal, the oceanview cabin cruise fare is $1,079 per person, a balcony is $1,279 per person, and a suite is $1,869 per person. (These prices are before any taxes or port fees.)
Fares with the drink package included:
- Oceanview: $1,079
- Balcony: $1,279
- Suite: $1,869
That same cruise under the current sale pricing without the drink package is lower. Without the package, it’s $759 per person for the oceanview cabin, $959 for the balcony, and $1,569 for the suite.
Regular sale fare without the drink package included:
- Oceanview: $759
- Balcony: $959
- Suite: $1,569
In other words, the drink package — which would cost $403 per person for this six-day cruise if bought aboard the ship — increases the cost of the cruise fare by $320 per person for an oceanview, $320 for a balcony cabin, and $300 for a suite .
So you are getting a discount overall, but the savings aren’t as large as you might think.
Do the Math Before Booking & Know the Rules
Even so, if you plan on getting a drink package during your cruise, then this deal can save you some money.
But before you book, we suggest you learn the ins and outs of the CHEERS! package to make sure you will get your money’s worth.
The drink package offers a lot to like. For the set daily charge, you get your choice of nearly any beverage on the ship. Want a margarita by the pool? Or a glass of wine with dinner? Simply head to the bar and it’s yours. You know exactly what you pay each day and never have to worry about a surprise bill.
That said, there are some rules around the package that you’ll want to know. For one, if one person in the cabin orders the CHEERS! package, then all adults in the cabin have to order it as well. There is also a limit on alcoholic drinks of 15 beverages per 24-hour period (there are no limits on non-alcoholic drinks).
You also have to purchase the package for the entire cruise. So even if you are in port all day and can’t take advantage, you’re still charged.
You’ll want to keep these rules in mind to know if you’ll get your money’s worth, or if you’d be better off booking the lower rate without the package.
For more details on the CHEERS! Package, see our article here .
If you want to book this deal, look in your email (don’t forget to check the junk folder) or give the cruise line a call. The rate code to reference is “”RU9”.

I've been on many Carnival cruises and always see first timers make these 10 mistakes, from buying drink packages to booking beach excursions
Posted: February 28, 2024 | Last updated: March 1, 2024
- I've been on so many Carnival cruises over the years that I consider them a home away from home.
- As a frequent Carnival cruiser, I've noticed first-timers repeating the same mistakes.
- Here are the mistakes I see on Carnival cruises, from overpacking to buying drink packages.
I cruise on Carnival so often that its ships have come to feel like a home away from home.
I'm a frequent cruiser who has spent more than 100 weeks at sea on cruise lines such as Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Virgin Voyages .
But I keep going back to Carnival Cruises . I've sailed with Carnival more than 10 times in the past five years, and it's become my favorite choice for budget getaways .
I've cruised with Carnival to the Mexican Riviera and the Caribbean out of ports in California, Florida, and Louisiana on smaller ships accommodating about 2,600 passengers and on larger ships accommodating up to 5,282 guests.
Each Carnival ship is a little different, but I think all sailings are consistently positive, and I come out of each cruise with new favorite things to do.
Yet each time I embark on a Carnival vacation, I see first-timers making the same mistakes that I think detract from the overall experience.
Here's what to watch out for so you can be a savvy sailor the next time you find yourself on a Carnival ship.
On embarkation day, I notice that most cruisers head to the buffet for their first meal. But Carnival offers so many other free dining options with fewer crowds.
In my experience, many passengers board their Carnival cruise just before lunch.
After they check in and find their staterooms, I've noticed that most people head to the buffet for a bite. While Carnival has a large buffet that can accommodate several hundred people, I think embarkation day can feel unwieldy because everyone seems to show up in the same venue at the same time.
That's why I love diverting to one of the other free dining venues, which have shorter lines on that first day.
And many restaurants are included in the base cruise fare, no matter which ship you're on.
In addition to the main dining rooms and buffet, Carnival ships have a half dozen other places to eat on board that incur no extra charge.
The choices differ from ship to ship, but most include a walk-up pizzeria, a taco and burrito bar, and unique eateries like Shaq's Big Chicken and Guy's Burger Joint from the celebrity chef Guy Fieri.
Carnival also has specialty restaurants that charge extra for dinner but not lunch. Many cruisers don't know this and miss out.
In addition to the main dining room, buffet, and stand-alone venues, Carnival has even more complimentary dining that's easy to miss.
Many of Carnival's specialty restaurants charge an extra fee for dinner, but most first-timers don't know that lunch is included in their ticket price.
The Italian spot Cucina Del Capitano charges $18 a person for dinner but offers a free modified lunch menu . JiJi Asian Kitchen similarly charges $18 a person for dinner but offers a free Mongolian-wok lunch .
Another one of my favorites, Fieri's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse , has an à la carte menu throughout the day that costs extra, but on sea days, it has a free outdoor barbecue menu serving best-selling items such as brisket, pork butt, and sausage, along with sides such as mac and cheese and potato salad.
I think many first-time passengers miss out on Carnival's adults-only Serenity Retreat, which is exclusive to cruisers age 21 and over and has no surcharge.
I'll admit, I'm a little reluctant to share this tip because every time I've visited Carnival's Serenity Retreat , I'm surprised at how sparsely populated the relaxing space is.
I don't want to spoil the oasis-like feeling, but it's one of my favorite places to go on a Carnival ship, and I think you're missing out if you don't take advantage of it.
Serenity Retreat is an adults-only area nicely tucked away on an upper deck, away from foot traffic, so only those who want to find it do. I think it's a wonderful escape from daytime pool-deck parties and kids running around with melting ice-cream cones.
In my experience, many cruise lines charge extra for access to a similar adults-only space. The full-day rate for enjoying The Sanctuary on Princess Cruises is usually $40 a person for a full day or $20 a person for a half day, according to Cruise Critic. Cruise Critic also says Norwegian's adults-only Vibe Beach Club , which has a private bar, a lounge space, and its own hot-tub area on a quiet part of the ship, can cost $100 a person for a day pass or about $209 for a weeklong pass.
So in my mind, there's no better value than having a free, adults-only space on Carnival.
The Serenity Retreat is available across the Carnival fleet . It's often two levels at the front of the ship and remains out of sight for the most part thanks to a privacy fence.
I think many guests may assume it has a cover charge or is available only to suite guests. That is not the case, and anyone over 21 can relax on loungers, sun beds, daybeds, and hammocks. I always find plenty of fresh towels and love to take a dip in one of the oversize spa tubs.
A light lunch of fresh fruit, salads, and wraps is usually available alongside a quiet bar area, where soft music plays in the background.
The pool and upper decks are always buzzing with activities, but there are many quiet spaces on Carnival ships that go overlooked.
I love a good pool-deck party with '80s music and dancing. I also appreciate having some relaxing, quiet time away from activities. And there are many places on Carnival, such as the Serenity Retreat, where cruisers can find it.
That's why I always reacquaint myself with the ship layout during my first day on board. As I stroll through each deck, I remind myself of the less-busy atrium bar, the quiet library stocked with paperbacks, and, my favorite, the outer promenade deck. Available on most of Carnival's fleet, the promenade deck often wraps around the ship on the third or fourth deck, and it's where I like to take in the sunset or enjoy a cocktail.
The promenade deck isn't fancy. It's a wide-open space with chairs and loungers, but mostly, it's a serene place to breathe the salty air and appreciate being on vacation. I look forward to returning to it again and again, and I've never seen this outdoor space packed with people on all my cruises on Carnival.
Many Carnival cruisers buy the drink package, but in my experience, it's not usually worth it.
From booking time until the sailing date, Carnival guests receive emails offering them a chance to save money by prepurchasing a drink package.
If you plan to drink a fair amount of alcohol, it can be a mistake not to buy the drink package before sailing, as Carnival offers a preboarding discount where guests can save 10% compared with buying the package once on board.
Yet, in my experience, a drink package isn't the best deal if you plan to have a drink here or there.
And when I'm on a cruise with a port destination every day, I don't spend as much time on the ship. Then I think it doesn't make sense, and the package often goes unused.
Instead, I take advantage of on-board promotions such as daily happy-hour deals, which I've found can save you 50% on each drink.
The best way to learn about these deals is to scan the daily activity program left in your stateroom for the details or to pop by your favorite bar and ask when they offer happy hour, which varies by venue. I've saved a lot of money by purchasing drinks à la carte and doing so exclusively during happy hour.
Carnival has designated smoking areas for cigarettes, cigars, and vaping. But bringing drugs on board, including marijuana, is not only a big mistake but also illegal.
Carnival has a reputation as being a fun vacation experience with late-night deck parties and a relaxed vibe.
But recreational drugs are not allowed on board.
No matter which state you're sailing to or from, marijuana is illegal under federal law, and those laws govern cruise lines, Cruise Critic reported. Passengers found with weed on a cruise ship can be subject to fines and removal from the cruise.
Carnival's drug policies follow federal laws prohibiting cannabis products, as noted in its guest-ticket contract all guests must agree to before boarding.
I think Carnival provides a fun cruise vacation with so much to do, but that makes it easy to never take a break.
Carnival cruises are bursting with so many fun things to do day and night that it's no wonder they're called the "fun ships." From deck parties to ropes courses, waterslides, and mini golf, I think it's impossible to be bored on a Carnival cruise.
But I think that also makes it all too easy to try to do too much, especially in one day. When first-timers try to take advantage of everything on board, they might depart their cruise needing a vacation from their vacation.
This would be a shame — I've always found a cruise one of the most relaxing trips I can take. Sure, there's always something to do on Carnival cruises, but I love the opportunity to slow down and disconnect.
To find balance in my day, I set time aside to review the activities I want to do: waterslides, mini golf, main-stage entertainment, comedy shows, and so on. Then I make a little note to remind myself of these things so I don't forget, but I don't live by a day planner. It's a vacation, after all.
Instead, I try to visit each activity area of the ship and pick an afternoon or evening activity for each day I don't want to miss. The rest of the time, I relax and enjoy the salty breeze in the sun by the pool.
Carnival offers many shore excursions, and it may seem easiest to book one through the cruise line. But if you just want to hit the beach or snorkel, you'll save so much money if you go on your own.
If you haven't cruised before, it can be hard to know what to expect once you've reached your destination.
Carnival aims to make it easier by offering many hosted group excursions , where a representative from the ship takes you to a place or activity where all transport, and often meals, are included.
Over the years, I've found that Carnival offers some of the most affordable excursions for simple activities — such as visiting a bird sanctuary in Costa Maya, Mexico, or a shipwreck museum on St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands — and have seen them advertised for as low as $14 a person.
But if you want to go to a local beach to snorkel or boogie board, an official cruise-ship excursion usually costs at least $50 a person.
That may be fine in an area where a beach isn't close, but I find that I can often easily walk to a nearby beach or take a cheap taxi and can rent a boogie board or snorkel gear from a local on-site vendor, often spending only $5 to $10 for a few hours.
That's been my experience in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Hawaii, so I never pay five times that for an official cruise-ship excursion. I suggest you don't, either. Just do some research before you arrive as to what beach you'd like to visit, flag down a taxi, and enjoy your day while saving money.
Over the years, I've been guilty of overpacking, but so have many other cruisers. But there's no need to since most Carnival ships have self-serve laundry rooms.
If you've never cruised before, it's understandable not to know exactly what to pack .
Days at sea can offer unpredictable weather, and to sail for a week or longer, the clothing needed can add up, making it easy to overpack in preparation.
But Carnival cabins start at as small as 185 square feet , and sharing that space with others makes it feel smaller — you'll also be sharing limited closet space.
Experienced cruisers like me know that most Carnival ships offer self-serve laundry on each guest floor. These launderettes have washers, dryers, and a vending machine for soap and fabric softener for $2 a packet, though I tend to bring travel-size supplies from home.
For one load of laundry, I paid $3.50 for a washer and $3.50 for a dryer. I find that price reasonable compared to overpacking and perhaps paying extra to check luggage with an airline to and from my cruise.
It may seem like a small detail, but many first-time Carnival passengers don't know about the towel-animal takeover, and in my opinion, it shouldn't be missed.
As a repeat cruise guest, I expect a cute towel animal in my stateroom after the steward tidies my cabin for the day.
But I love that Carnival takes this small detail further by hosting a towel-animal takeover one morning of each sailing. That's when the crew makes hundreds of towel animals and fills the pool deck with their creations.
Late risers can easily miss this; in my experience, it's usually on the last morning of the cruise.
I always smile when a deck-wide spread of towel animals greets me while I wander to the Lido deck en route to the breakfast buffet. They come in all shapes and sizes, artfully crafted by the imaginative crew, and serve as a small reminder of how fun it is to sail with Carnival.

Discount Drink Package?

Does Carnival ever offer a discount on the drink package onboard? I am debating on getting it but am still trying to figure out if it will be worth it or not.

I believe it's actually 10% MORE expensive on board.
The only time I've ever seen the drink package "discounted" was when it was offered as a package with the cruise rate, either an RU0, RU1, RU2 etc. rate. And I haven't seen any of those offers in quite a while.
Never! But save 10% over the on-board price by buying prior to your cruise.

Other than the 10% "discount" by purchasing it before sailing, this.
I've got one of these offers right now, but I just can't sail when it would be valid. So there is some hope of it appearing.

I bought it twice and maybe they know I only ordered a drink or two a day. I get cheers and wifi non stop. It ends and is replaced. Lol in fact the wifi offer is more per days than the cheers rate. They know I'm not a big drinker?

Never say never...IIRC, there was one time, maybe right when the industry thought the pandemic pause was going to end after just a few months (but they were wrong, oh so wrong), when it was on special?
But that special rate evaporated along with the bookings when the pause kept going, and going...
And those special drinks-included rates that certain cruisers were offered right at the start-up.
But in general, "never" is a pretty good approximation!
CruizinSusan70
OP....either buy it beforehand with the 10% discount or punt. You get up to 15 alcoholic drinks per day plus unlimited non alcoholic drinks.

OP - and even then, it might not be the best deal. I've paid for my cabin and Cheers separately because it was cheaper than their "free" Cheers offer.
Or cruise NCL. They are always "giving" away drink packages. 🤣

Where "free" is expensive. No thanks, free is often a scam, I prefer "included", nothing is free, well, except advice. 😁
46 Carnival Cruises and Sept will be 1st Cheers package! Only because I got the special deal with my booking and it was literally less than $200 more total for 2 of us... and hubby's bottomless bubbles costs 1/3 of that much difference. Then add in the occasional drink I do get, and the milkshakes and coffees and it was totally worth it.
I simply could not in a million years drink that much to cover normal prices. I would spend the entire cruise passed out on the floor. Have younger brother and girlfriend and mom and dad coming this time, and figure we will be "partying" a bit more with the younger group so figured a few more drinks and they will be free to me. Especially when one drink is $15 now, and one milkshake was like $7 almost! OMG!

20 bucks per day on NCL to cover tips, versus 70 bucks per day on Carnival.

We also are getting cheers for the first time since Carnival offered the cheers to you for our upcoming cruise.
It's the first time I've seen them offer a discounted drinks rate with a booking and if we bought 2 decent drinks per day without the rate it would be the same cost.
I think the cheers package is over priced in its normal state and would not buy it on its own.
Talking of NCL, we got a great rate with them that included drinks and alsorts. Loved it.

They have resurrected the RU1, RU2 and RU3 rates as target marketing to spur sales to those cruisers that have never purchased Cheers in the past. It sucks for those who pay the regular rate, but when you buy it for all of your future Carnival sailings before the price increase from a few months ago, combined with the 10% pre-cruise rate and then combine it with 10% off gift cards, it makes it a bit more palatable.
Here's a tip for you. Go to Java cafe and get a double espresso. Then go to the Alchemy Bar and have them turn it into two espresso martini's you can enjoy before dinner.
Oh I can't have too much caffeine! Unless they do good decaf?
Might put rum in my milkshakes. 😄

The newer ships in the fleet have spiked milkshakes on the java menu. And I belief they can do decaf espresso.
Yeah we had them on the Vista
Could I please add a question to CHEERS topic... I have a final payment due on Aug 12 next week, to get the discount, do i have to add that and pay everything by that date... Or could I add it later, thanks

You don't need to add it before final payment, you can add it later.
