Top 7 Egyptian Palaces (Mainly in Cairo and Alexandria)

Top 7 Egyptian Palaces (Mainly in Cairo and Alexandria)

Egypt was a Sultanate and then a monarchy up until the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, when King Farouk was overthrown and fled to Italy, and Egypt was declared a republic. Even before then, during Ottoman times, Egypt was ruled by kings.

As a result of this rich history , Egypt has a plethora of beautiful palaces and royal residences dotted around the major cities , mostly Cairo and Alexandria . Many of these palaces are now museums or gardens for visitors from abroad and locals alike to visit and enjoy!

In Cairo : Abdeen Palace , Al-Gawhara Palace , Muhammed Ali Palace , Gezirah Palace , Qubba Palace

In Alexandria : Ras el-Tin Palace , Montaza Palace

1. Abdeen Palace - the Most Luxurious Palace in Egypt

  • Address : El-Gomhoreya Square, Rahbet Abdin, Abdeen, Cairo
  • Opening times for visitors : Monday–Sunday 9am to 3pm, except closed on Fridays.

Abdeen Palace is a historic palace found in Cairo. It was one of the official residences of the former monarchy and royal family of Egypt .

Abdeen Palace was officially opened in 1872, after which it became the official seat for the Royal Family until the 1952 coup d'etat, which overthrew King Farouk. Between then and now, it has been used as a main office for the President of Egypt , but the rest of the building houses multiple museums that you can visit.

Located in the Abdin district of Cairo, the lower floors of the Abdeen Palace contain: the Silver Museum, the Arms Museum, the Royal Family Museum, the Presidential Gifts Museum, and the Historical Documents Museum.

The top floors are reserved for visits from foreign diplomats, and the palace is also frequently used to host kings and presidents from all over the world.

2. Al-Gawhara Palace

  • Address : Al Abageyah, Qesm Al Khalifah, Cairo
  • Opening times for visitors : Monday–Sunday 9am to 5pm

Al-Gawhara Palace, also known as Bijou Palace, is located in Cairo just south of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Its construction was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha in 1814 , the Albanian Ottoman governor and the de facto ruler of Egypt between 1805 and 1848. He is also considered to be the founder of modern-day Egypt, and at the height of his reign ruled over Egypt, Sudan, Hejaz, and the entire Levant (including parts of present day Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey).

The Al-Gawhara Palace was his private residence , but he also had guests stay over occasionally, and some of his offices were here. Most of the guests included other royalty, or heads of state that visited Egypt on official business.

Al-Gawhara is a beautiful example of Ottoman architecture , and you'll also find many European influences in the building.

3. Ras el-Tin Palace

  • Address : Ad Daerah Al Gomrokeyah, Alexandria
  • Opening times for visitors : Always open (only the garden as the inside of the palace is not open to the public as it is still in use for government business)

The oldest royal palace still in use , the Ras el-Tin Palace overlooks the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt. It is one of the official residences of the serving President of Egypt , and it was a royal palace under the Muhammad Ali dynasty of Egypt and Sudan.

The construction of the Ras el-Tin Palace started in 1834, and it wasn't completed until 11 years later in 1845.

The palace has since seen many inhabitants , from the British who built a British naval base next to it during British rule of Egypt, through to King Farouk, the penultimate monarch of Egypt and Sudan who lived there following the 1952 Egyptian Revolution.

The building itself shows some Italian influences , as well as Baroque and Moorish elements . As a visitor, you are only able to enter the formal garden, but you'll still be able to see the palace. Or you could take a boat trip to see it from the sea, because the palace itself is still in use for hosting state guests and holding events.

4. Muhammed Ali Palace (Manial Palace)

  • Address : 1 Saraya El-Manial Street, Cairo

Manial Palace and Museum is a great place to learn more about the late King Farouk , the tenth ruler of Egypt from the Muhammad Ali dynasty, and the penultimate King of Egypt and Sudan.

The palace incorporates an art and history museum open to the public, historical gardens, and a nature park. There is also a hunting lodge museum.

Having been built by Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik (between 1899 and 1929), the palace was designed in a style that combines European Art Nouveau and Rococo , including elements of traditional Islamic architecture styles for a beautiful combination. You'll also find ceramic tiles by famous American ceramist David Ohannessian.

5. Cairo Marriott Hotel and Gezirah Palace

  • Address : Sarah El Gezira St, Omar Al Khayam, Zamalek, Cairo
  • Opening times for visitors : Always open

Located inside the Zamalek district in Cairo, the Cairo Marriott Hotel's central wing was originally the Gezirah Palace and is probably one of the more unique palaces you'll visit, given that it is inside a hotel!

Originally, the Gezirah Palace was built for the Khedive Isma'il Pasha in 1869 in order to host French Emperor Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugénie in 1869 , to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal . Since then, more buildings were added onto the construction.

It has seen a lot of different times in history , having served as the No. 2 Australian General Hospital during World War I's Battle of Gallipoli, and being sold to a Syrian businessman in 1919, in order to be converted to a private residence. In 1952 the hotel was nationalized by Gamal Abdel Nasser, and converted to a hotel.

The Marriott opened there quite recently in 1982, and the palace's roof is now an open-air theatre, too.

6. Qubba Palace

  • Address : Az Zaytoun, Al Qebleyah, Zeitoun, Cairo
  • Opening times for visitors : Not open yet, currently being renovated for visitors

The Qubba Palace, the biggest royal palace from the time of the Muhammed Ali Dynasty , was built between 1867 and 1872.

On the grounds you'll find gardens with a rare collection of trees and plants dating back to the era of Khedive Ismail, and it's also surrounded by a lake where male royalty used to go fishing and for picnics.

In 1925, King Fouad I made it his residence , and his funeral was also held there in 1936. After this, King Farouk returned to Egypt from England, and he also returned to this palace.

Besides being one of the main palaces alongside the Abdeen Palace, Qubba Palace was also known for weddings at the time, as this was where most of the royal weddings happened .

At the palace museum you'll find a huge amount of collectibles , including clothing, furniture, and vehicles that belonged to the royal family, as well as historical documents and photo albums.

Renovations on the palace and its museum are being finished at the time of writing this (August 2022), and the Egyptian government is working hard to re-open it as soon as possible.

7. Montaza Palace

  • Address : Al Mandarah Bahri, Qesm El-Montaza, Alexandria
  • Opening times for visitors : Monday–Sunday 8am to 10pm

The Montaza Palace, located in Alexandria, is a beautiful palace overlooking the Al Montaza Gulf that incorporates gardens as well as access to various private beaches for swimming. Its location is no surprise, as Alexandria was typically where the wealthy went to escape the summer heat .

Today, visitors to the palace can enjoy boat rides , walking around the surrounding gardens , or you can also go waterskiing , snorkeling , diving , or even just swimming in the sea . The garden is also special in that there are a huge selection of trees and plants, some of which are rare and were brought in especially. The plants and trees at Montaza Palace are still in good shape even, after having been planted over 120 years ago.

The Montaza Palace was built in 1892 by Khedive Abbas Hilmi II as his summer palace and hunting lodge, having chosen the location because he loved the sea views from here. It was built in Art Nouveau Architecture style .

After his death, the royal family continued to take care of the complex until the reign of the last king of Egypt ended. After the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, the government took control over the palace, opened the gardens for the public and turned the palace into the museum you can visit today.

Egypt is a Muslim country and the dress code is towards the conservative side, especially for women. That being said, we are used to seeing travelers from all over the world. My suggestion would be to wear light clothes and not to wear short shorts, short skirts and alike to avoid the occasional unwanted stare. But it's really up to you. When you visit religious places (synagogues, churches, and mosques) you do need to cover your shoulders and wear over the knee dresses, if you are planning to wear one of course. If you plan to attend the Nile dinner cruise, there is no need for formal wear unless you want to make that night a special night! Also, you will be sharing this experience with other travelers so you can dress however you feel most comfortable.

How to get visa to visit Egypt?

You can get your visa when you arrive at Cairo Airport. It is an easy process for USA, UK, Canadian, Australian and European citizens. The visa is simply a stamp (like a mail or postage stamp) that you buy from the visa office, at the port of entry just before the immigration booth. The visa will cost you $25 US Dollars and after buying it; you just stick it on any empty page on your passport. Once you have bought your visa you then stand in line to get your passport stamped by the immigration officer. You can also apply for E-Visa via the official electronic visa portal: www.visa2egypt.gov.eg

How many days in Egypt is enough?

Your Egypt Tours travel agency recommends two weeks so that you can enjoy the temples and tombs of Luxor and Aswan, explore the sights of Cairo, and relax in the Red Sea islands and nature reserves.

What is the best Nile River cruise?

There are many Nile cruises. Not to name one but your choice depends on many things to put in mind such as the number of nights you want to spend on the cruiser, your budget, and the standard of the Nile cruise. We recommend you choose a 5-star luxury Nile cruise, and if you are looking for a private Nile River cruise you can choose Dahabiya cruises, it is only for the small-group tour, about 15 people. Most cruises have. There is another way of cruising the Nile, which is the Felucca boat. It is traditional and charming but it is cheap as long as it will be ok to sleep on the deck exposed to mosquitos and most of these boats do not have a toilet

Absolutely mind blowing. A definite must see. We flew from Aswan after I contact Your Egypt Tours, as I did not want to sit in car for hours with my 10-year-old daughter. Just so much history and ancient love. You cannot miss this one thing if you are in Egypt. The rocks are just HUGE, so special.

Manial Palace – A Look at Royal Life in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Manial Palace is an often overlooked tourist attraction in Cairo, despite the fact that it consistently gets very favorable ratings on various travel-related websites. This palace is generally not included in our current range of Cairo tour packages , but it can be added to any one of our itineraries upon request. Of course, there are literally an almost infinite number of Cairo Tourist Attractions , and most people who visit the country simply don’t have enough time to visit even a small fraction of them.

However, if you are going to be in Cairo for a few days, and you are trying to compose a list of must-see attractions, then by all accounts, Manial Palace is an attraction worth considering.

Design Your Custom Tour

If you are expecting to see an unimaginably opulent palace which is overflowing with historical artifacts, then the Manial Palace may not be the ideal place for you to visit. To some extent, one could almost say that the Manial Palace is not really a palace at all, given that from the outside it is nothing like most other royal palaces one can see, both in Cairo and further afield.

However, if you would like to get a feel of how royalty lived during the 19th and early 20th centuries, then Manial Palace and its museum is an attraction which we would definitely recommend visiting.

It is also a fantastic place to visit if you need a break from the frantic hustle and bustle of Cairo. The vast gardens offer a wonderful sense of serenity, while the interior of the museum has plenty of wonderful artifacts on display. There are also plenty of stained glass windows which help you to capture some truly mesmerizing photos.

A Brief History of the Manial Palace

Passage through trees leading to closed door at the public park of The Manial Palace of Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik, Cairo

The Manial Palace Estate is best-known for its 5 distinctive buildings, each with its own unique style, and also for its beautiful blend of Persian gardens and English landscaped gardens. There’s also a forested nature park and a hunting museum that used to belong to the Egypt’s late King Farouk.

Manial Palace, along with the estate on which it was built, has been preserved and designated as a historic house museum by Egypt’s Antiquities Council. It is located in southern Cairo, in the Sharia Al-Saray area of the El-Manial district.

The palace was built by the late King Faroud’s uncle, Mohammed Ali Tewfik, and took several years to complete, from 1899 to 1929.

The palace once housed King Farouks extensive art collection, as well as his clothing; silverware, and Objets D’Art collections. While many of the original pieces are still on display at the Manial Palace, others have been relocated to other museums.

Visiting Manial Palace and Museum

Throne Hall at Manial Palace

Manial Palace is nothing like most royal palaces, but that in itself helps to make this a very nice and unique attraction to visit when you are in Cairo.

It has a rich and interesting history; it gives visitors a wonderful insight into how royalty lived at the time; it contains many amazing artifacts; it has a truly splendid garden, and it offers visitors a delightful break from the chaos of Cairo.

This site is real gem of a place if you want to enjoy some peace and quiet.

palace tours egypt

  • 05 16, 2023

After the cotton boom in the late century20's , many wealthy families built villas and palaces in the still sandy landscape of the  ramleh area where is zezenia has always and still is one of Alexandria’s most salubrious residential districts. but Unfortunately most of these villas and palaces vanished to free space for large apartments and population areas which was a big loss for our history and Egyption Archaeological scenes. but Egypt never stop amazing us and always there is a new places to discover .

This palace belongs to aziza fahmy one of the 3 children from the nobel family of  Mohamed Pasha Fahmy and It takes 11 minutes to take a walk around the palace , it is not a wide place but it is really incredible building . Sometimes the people call it Aisha Fahmy palace -Aziza’s sister- who rented the neighbouring villa  but it is non- existent which belonging to a baron his name was Alfred de Menasce so they are not related at all just misunderstand. But she visited her from time to time in her palace too.

Actually this palace was a summer house designed on neoclassical style by Granato in the late 20’s or early 30’s and when i mention that the Architecter is an Italian that means there will be a great Architectural Masterpiece. Granato was known for his work in Cairo and also he was belonging to the Neo-renaissance school (Palladian design) which is a group of 19th century architectural revival styles which drew inspiration from a wide area of classicizing Italian modes. Under the broad designation Renaissance architecture 19th century architects and critics went too far from the architectural style which began in Itay specific in  Florence and the Centeral the early 15th century as an expression which they also included styles that can be identified as Mannerist or Baroque an architect styles. Self-applied style designations were rife in the mid- and later nineteenth century.

The divergent forms of Renaissance architecture in different pieces of Europe, specially in France and Italy, has added to the difficulty of indentifing and recognizing Neo-Renaissance architecture. A comparison between the breadth of its source material, such as the English Wollaton Hall , Italian Palazzo Pitti, the French Château de Chambord, and the Russian Palace of Facets—all deemed "Renaissance"—illustrates the variety of appearances the same architectural label can take. which was a revival of classical influencing the whole of Europe.

Now let’s move to the hill which rises about 16 ft (5 m) above the sea water level. The area of the palace surrounded by a classical fence, is 150,700 ft2 (14,000 m2 ) in palce is nearly to a square shape , the palace consists 3 floors:- - the basement used as a kitchen and all other services  -the first floor used as a reception which include the dining rooms and salons  -the second floor is for the family living rooms and bedrooms

The building suffered severe intentional damage in the 1990s in the course of a dispute between the inheritors and the government on the possession of the palace. It seemed that the objective of the damage was to cause collapse of the building in a short time.
