A successful strategy: The Eavesway Travel approach

Tim Deakin

Identifying an untapped or emerging market and capitalising on it is one of the keys to successful business, and that approach has proved fruitful for Eavesway Travel. Its Cruiselink work is often what the operator is best known for, and those port transfers are once again in full swing as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to fade from view. But there is a lot more to what Eavesway does as the Ashton-in-Makerfield company continues to diversify its fleet and work structure.

Servicing Cruiselink is a fleet of distinctive Van Hool Altanos. They are of varying ages, but thanks to some cherished registration marks, the newest is indistinguishable from the oldest, inside and out. Such a uniform approach was among the principles adopted by Managing Director Mike Eaves when he took on leadership of Eavesway in the mid-1980s as the third generation of the Eaves family to do so.

Until then, Eavesway carried out all forms of coach transport with a fleet that reflected the domination of the vehicle supply chain of the time by British marques, and with some early Volvo involvement. Prior to taking charge, Mike had worked in Eavesway’s holiday business, selling packages for the likes of Thomson Holidays. That gave the opportunity to travel and see coaching in other countries.

“I would board Neoplans and vehicles like them in the 1980s and think: ‘Why can’t we have this in the UK?’. They looked like they had just landed from Mars compared to what we had at the time.”

Image is of the utmost importance to Eavesway Travel

Back in Lancashire, opinions on following that lead differed, however. Mike believed that reclining seats, and fewer of them, a toilet and all-round comfort for customers was the direction to go in. Others involved in the business at that time favoured high capacity on the grounds of versatility. History shows that Mike’s way was the one that was adopted, but other changes were in the mix.

Eavesway Travel Managing Director Mike Eaves

“One of my initial ideas was to have a constant image across the business. Previously we had a mixed livery. People would call for a quote but ask for a specific coach,” he explains.

“What I wanted to create was a common brand where vehicles would all look the same.”

Blue and green had always been part of the core Eavesway identity, and it remains present today. But Mike favoured metallic silver as a base colour. That was adopted and the new image rolled out. It worked well.

“People quickly got to realise that if a coach said Eavesway on the side, the service would be good,” he says. The only deviation in terms of livery captures the small number of coaches purchased predominantly for sports team transport. They carry a more discrete metallic dark grey.

Van Hool was quickly settled on as the supplier of choice. That has largely been in conjunction with DAF, although MAN made an appearance in earlier times, including in a small number of EOS 90 models. One of the latter served as the Manchester United FC team coach for a period as team transport – already an element of its business – adopted greater prominence.

Van Hool partnership: Flexibility in design is key

Key to going with Van Hool was the flexibility offered by the Belgian builder. Mike has worked closely with it on multiple innovations, including the advent of wheelchair user access via an extended front overhang in the Altano. The first Van Hool arrived in 1987 and, based on the DAF SB3000 chassis, was the fleet’s first rear-engined coach. A second, on a mid-engined DAF chassis, joined at around the same time but the poorer luggage space afforded meant it was the last mid-engined addition. It served Everton FC.

Eavesway Exclusive Van Hool Altano

The Altano in a layout that prioritises legroom over capacity has latterly been standardised upon for large coaches by Eavesway, but Mike has now placed a firm order for a pair of 10.7m EX11H models.

With a seating capacity of around 32, they will capitalise on an increasing prominence of smaller groups that do not require an Altano’s passenger or luggage capacity. Such coaches could also prove useful on Cruiselink work for lower-demand trips.

EX11Hs will not be the first smaller coaches for Eavesway. In addition to a pair of Mercedes-Benz Sprinters with EVM conversions , a Yutong TC9 joined recently (see below). Common across all vehicles is cream leather seating. That is part of the approach of ensuring as much commonality as possible and that customers get what they expect regardless of the size of coach that carries them.

Cruiselink and sports team travel prominent for Eavesway

Cruiselink forms a core of Eavesway’s work, although its prominence has dropped slightly in recent years as some cruise lines introduced subsidised, or free, port transfers. Mike first saw the growing cruise market in the late-1980s and Eavesway served it initially via private hires for travel agents in the North West.

While free or low-cost travel from some cruise lines has moderated demand, Eavesway still has a clearly defined market. Its transfers focus on Southampton but Dover and Newcastle also feature.

Mike’s early strategy with cruise work was to ‘ringfence’ it as Eavesway’s product. That continues to be the case. Customers book direct, and while the price reflects the standard of service and vehicle provided, Cruiselink has generated a great deal of loyalty. That was helped by the operator’s approach during the early days of COVID-19, when the policy adopted was to refund bookings rather than keep customers’ money.

A positive around cruise work and sports team transport is that dates are known many months in advance. That helps long-term planning and for such transfers to be tied both with each other, and other private hire, tour and corporate requirements.

Private hire has become more prominent for Eavesway as the industry’s wider supply and demand equation leads to customer acceptance of higher rates. Frequent trips to and from Southampton from multiple parts of the UK has also allowed a good base of private hire clients to be established outside the North West.

Van Hool Altano coach line-up

Among those are incoming football teams. Their requirements are largely based on knock-out competitions and are thus ad-hoc, but they have contributed to Eavesway’s interest in smaller coaches; it is often the case that among those hired by a visiting club will be one to convey a small number of Directors.

Three professional football clubs in England remain clients of Eavesway for team transport, with some supporter movements also catered for.

In the past, Mike enjoyed a good working relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson in his capacity as Manchester United FC Manager, although another operator now undertakes that club’s transport. Eavesway also served Everton for 37 years. More recently, the focus has moved towards other sports. Rugby union and cricket both form part of that.

A focus on driver recruitment and retention

Although the pandemic was challenging for Eavesway, the operator was able to complete the planned sales of three vehicles in the early part of 2020. That provided capital to pursue the refund strategy. Diversification of work had already begun before COVID-19 hit and it continues as coach replacement plans for 2023 are finalised. A golden rule of Mike’s is that at least 75% of the fleet is always paid for. He sees no reason to change that.

But while part of Eavesway’s strategy is on built on ensuring that customers know what they will get, Mike also places a great deal of focus on drivers. Working for Eavesway is a little different to many coach driving jobs. Cruise ship and sports team commitments bring a lot of weekend shifts. All but a handful of staff were retained during the pandemic thanks to the furlough scheme.

As things return, recruitment for driving and other roles is in order. Eavesway has been successful in doing so, although Mike notes that drivers are more difficult to come by than previously. All Eavesway employees are salaried – something introduced soon after Mike moved up to head the business – and that brings benefits. While a driver could possibly earn a little more elsewhere on hourly pay during the peak months, doing so with any certainty would be difficult to impossible for the remainder of the year. A double-digit percentage rise was also awarded to drivers from 1 April.

No single key to success for Eavesway Travel

“Diesel costs are also not helpful now, but even with a full stock of fuel and a fleet of coaches we have no business without drivers,” Mike notes. Paying them fairly “is imperative” to successful attraction and retention, while QBE Insurance has worked with Eavesway to reduce the minimum age of permitted drivers on its policy to 21.

Eavesway Travel base in Ashton-in-Makerfield

The operator employs no drivers below the previous minimum age of 25, but Mike sees the change as a possible enabler for the future and an influence on whether he explores engaging young drivers via apprenticeships.

Mike also devotes significant time to considering the future of the business, but he notes that the current management teams have shown great competence; they have helped the operator to achieve both Investor in People accreditation and join the DVSA Earned Recognition scheme.

There is no single secret to Eavesway’s undoubted success. It prides itself on a uniform and high-quality service and delivering what it promises. But in all that Mike shares, there is perhaps one pearl of wisdom above all others: “I don’t like working for people. Instead, I like working with them.”

Yutong TC9 midicoach

Eavesway’s Yutong TC9: Another to follow after good results

Eavesway’s first Yutong TC9 (pictured, above) joined earlier in 2022. It was purchased to meet a specific need for a coach of its size, and it comes with 26 seats, tables and a full rear kitchen.

Yutong importer Pelican Bus and Coach had first spoken with Mike well before the TC9 was ordered, and UK Coach Sales Manager Simon Collins kept in regular touch to discuss requirements. When a firm order was on the table, Eavesway’s obligatory seat finish was not a Yutong offering until Simon raised it with the factory.

“Credit to Yutong: It did what I asked and the coach was delivered with cream leather seats with blue inserts and a curtain colour that had not been done before. At the time of ordering, Yutong did not do the paint shade I required, so I offered to send a sample,” explains Mike.

“The colour of the vehicle and everything else ex-factory was all correct. When it arrived, it was taken to AD Coach Systems for the kitchen.” The TC9 will remain a one-off with Eavesway Travel. It was “something of an experiment” by the operator, but Mike adds that having just one coach of a certain type can be difficult when multiple customers request it. He has thus confirmed an order with Pelican for a second.

Since delivery, the Yutong has carried out private and corporate hire, tours and cruise transfers. Where sports teams require more than one coach, it will see use in that application too, hence its completion in metallic dark grey. “So far, the experiment has been a success,” Mike adds.

Eavesway travel to Southampton

Cool Cruiser

We are thinking of taking a cruise from Southampton. As we live in Cheshire, we don’t really want to have to drive ourselves and have been looking at Eavesway who can pick up from 2 places quite close to us. Can anyone give any feedback on Eavesway. Are they reliable? Will the ship wait if the coach is delayed??

We have used them many times in the past from Keele and found them to be very reliable, with modern comfortable coaches.  We have not been on any form of public transport during the pandemic so I can't comment on how they have been recently.

I cruised on Iona with friends in December. We used Eavesway to get to Southampton and were VERY impressed. Would definitely use again. Lovely drivers and very clean comfortable coach

I would recommend Eavesway....always been an enjoyable experience...much better than the hassle ....and expense.... of driving down the day before....sorting an overnight hotel out...much more relaxing.

We much prefer a leisurely drive down at our own pace and stay in a hotel pre cruise everybody to their own. The only time we used Eavesway, when it was P&O contracted coach not like now, we had to pick up coach at service station on M6 so had to go to a more northerly junction to access service station. We struggled to book a taxi because of school runs so ended up booking one for 8am for 10am pick up. When the coach arrived and loaded suitcases on very efficiently and left on time 2 service stations down we stopped for an hour for a break for driver and passengers who had been on coach since Glasgow. We left the service station at 1130am and we were not much closer to Southampton as were still only 10-15 miles from home. If we had left home by car at 8am and luck with traffic we would have been in Southampton by the time we left service station. If it is practical to use and convenient then coach transfer is fine but it isnt for us and would never travel to Southampton again by coach.

We have travelled with Eavesway many times and found them to be clean comfortable and reliable. However I read somewhere that the ship would not wait if coach delayed as P.O. Does not use them anymore.

I don't think there would be a problem with the ship waiting as Eavesway have their pickup times alot earlier than the P&O coaches. From Keele Services it is usually 8:30 - 9:00 whereas Intercruises are around 10:00. We have used both Eavesway and P&O but will now only use Eavesway.

BA lost my luggage on a Cunard package and we sailed from New York to Southampton without it. The QM-2 purser told me that most luggage losses are on coaches to the terminal in Southampton.  Most get off the coach and race to check-in without ensuring their luggage is off the coach.  Apparently the coaches have numerous cubby holes and it is not unknown that some don’t get unloaded.  This doesn’t come to light until the ship has sailed!

We have used Eavesway for every cruise we taken, 10 return journeys so far. The coaches are  clean and comfortable, with very good legroom, the best of any coach we've travelled on, and also with free onboard wi-fi. The drivers are friendly, and have constant information regarding any road hold ups/accidents etc, and have often taken a different route to avoid delays.  The driver keeps you regularly updated of your progress and timings, and we have never once been late.

I can only speak as to our own experiences with Eavesway, but I won't hesitate to use them again for our next cruise.

That happened to us when we flew from Heathrow to JFK on Concorde and had 4 nts in New York prior to sailing back on QE2. When we were at the carousel waiting for our luggage we waited until the very end and one item of baggage containing my suits and formal wear was missing. Lady at JFK phoned BA at Heathrow and they confirmed it was there. But even then with 2 Concorde flights a day and numerous jumbos flying daily between Heathrow-JFK on a daily basis it still took them 3 days to get my baggage delivered to my hotel.

When I  worked I hated if the travel department booked me on BA because I  expected them to lose my luggage.  The worst occasion was when I  arrived in Bilbao and as usual no bag so I wandered over to the BA office and joined a very long queue only to be told that my bag was still in Heathrow because they had failed to load a baggage container but it would be delivered 3 days later.  After a long discussion they agreed that they would some how get my bag on a flight the next day.  It did arrive the next evening at my hotel covered in Iberia airline stickers.  I  learned a good lesson, don't travel in jeans and tshirt unless I had suitable office wear in my hand luggage.

Do you know if they pick up from London for our friend?  Ah, not they don't.  Hmmm

  • 5 months later...

I WOULD NOT recommend travelling with Eavesway.  We have used them in the past and they have been acceptable.  Indeed reviews have generally been better for Eavesway than Intercruise.  However we have had one MASSIVE problem with them.  They wrote to us a couple of weeks before our cruise telling us that they had decided not to run our coach!.  Just like that.  After holding our money for many months and Ts&Cs threatening us that if we cancel we will lose varying portions of our money - they just decide they don't want to run it because presumably there weren't enough people on it.  So here we are, just about to travel, and because of Eavesway we have to pay premium last minute prices.  To say I am gutted is putting it mildly.  I will never use their services again.

Just to put this in context, I've used other companies before and, when numbers were low, they simply used smaller coaches.  On one, they just sent a VW Caravelle people carrier for us and another couple.  It seems other companies know what it is to keep a promise but Eavesway just couldn't acre less.

From Carlisle the pick up is much later for Eavesway than for cruise Connect/Intercruise

Been told not to wait to check on luggage being unloaded as the luggage isn't unloaded at the same place as the passengers.  Last cruise got off and as we were being ushered into the terminal the coach moved off to the luggage hold.

Always travel on coach. Only problems I had was with Eavesaay. Moving pickup point two weeks prior to cruise. Adding 1 1/2 hrs to an already lengthy journey to pick up two passengers. Offloaded some luggage (not mine) at the wrong ship (never had Intercruise/Cruise Connect deliver passengers to different ships). On the return journey the driver twice unloaded my luggage at wrong place. (Luckily my seat was above the hold and i could see). Was then transferred onto a minibus which was late and then broke down!

Only trouble I've had with Intercruise has been caused by the passengers.  Late disembarking because they hadn't finished breakfast, late arriving at pick up points etc.

Looking at booking a coach transfer for our next cruise and wondering which service is the best option to take.

We much prefer Eavesway as their pick up ponts are much more convenient for us. Found the other one would have needed an expensive taxi ride to pick up point. Also special offer on just now and we saved £10 each return. :)

Not used Cruise Connect - but last month travelling down on Eavesway the Cruise Connect buses at the final comfort stop were noticeably quite a mix of different companies.

Eavesway on the other hand have a well defined and established product - you know what you're getting.

My personal inclination would be to choose Eavesway unless there was a major difference in price or pickup/dropoff convenience.

Josy1953

Eavesway everytime for us, we went with Cruise Connect 2 years ago as it was the free offering from Cunard and we travelled to Southampton on a coach that was so old and in such poor cxondition that we were concerned as to whether it would actually manage to reach Southampton. On the return journey we had a comfortable coach that was of a similar standard to Eavesway but the uncertainty as to which coach you get is not worth taking the risk in my opinion. As I understand the situation Cruise Connect do not actually own the coaches they sub-contract from other companies so it is very hit and miss. We have 3 cruises currently booked and have chosen to take OBC rather than free coach travel and will use the OBC to help pay for our travel on Eavesway.

We use Evesway every year clean modern coaches and free wi fi.

Wide range of collection points. What is the special offer they are running and how do you find the details as need to book for next cruise .thanks

The offer is £10 off the return journey between 3rd November 2014 until I think april 2015. At least that is what it is for us from Bolton. If you ring them the girls are very helpful and they will advise the exact dates. Definitely 3rd November though as we go on 10th November. Hope this helps.:)

We're just back from a P&O cruise and used their linked supplier, Intercruises, to get to Southampton. We have previously always used Eavesway and been totally happy with them, but wanted the security of the connection with P&O in the event that anything went wrong.

The coaches used by Intercruises for both our journeys, to and from the North West, were excellent and I would not hesitate to use them again. The experience was identical to that which we've had in the past when using Eavesway.

Glad to hear that. We're booked with Intercruises down to Southampton in December and was getting a little concerned at some of the negative comments. The coach journey down (we fly home) is part of the holiday for us and I like my comfort :)

Living on a prayer

The Intercruises coach we had last year was the one used by Tranmere FC, that season. Very comfortable.

Also glad to hear that Cruise Connect are as good as Eavesway. Booked with them for September 2015. This was free as part of an offer a few months ago so we had no choice in the provider. The only snag is we have to go from a different pick up point in Bolton.

We previously used Eavesway who were very satisfactory.

The issue with Intercruises is that they do not have their own coaches consequently it is hit or miss as to the quality of the couach that travel on. You have a better chance of getting a good quality coach outside of the main holiday season. With Eavesway you always know that you are going to get a good quality coach.

I might be wrong but is it not the case that if you take the free coach then you do not get any On Board Credit?

We always have used Eavesway and did so last week without any problems

Our offer (booked about March, I think) was either / or. However there was also extra OBC, or M and S vouchers. We therefore chose the travel as that would be worth more than the usual credit for us but some people would get much more :)

Eavesways every time.

luxury coaches, very helpful and friendly drivers, very helpful office staff, convenient pick up spots, can not fault them at all.

Intercruises

Old coach, bad tempered driver, had to wait for coach in the rain with no where to shelter, coach broke down twice on the way back.

Have only used Intercruises once!!!!!!

michealjohn

My wife and I travelled down to Southampton using inter cruises and can say that they were every bit as good as Eavesway whom we have used previous.

The coach was new supplied by Coopers and the driver was cheerful helpful and very polite.

Plenty of room on the coach to travel in comfort enough rest breaks and reached the port in plenty of time

The return journey was also as good

We booked just after xmas and got the free coach and £75 each obc as special offer on then. Really good deal for us in the North East as coach normally around £120. For next year we have free coach and £20 each obc.

We booked about 6 weeks ago when the offer was a choice of free parking, obc or free coach transfer. As the coach costs nearly £200 from the North for both of us this seemed the best deal for us, however we had no choice in which company to use because it was free.

  4. Cruise Connect or Eavesway Cruiselink

Posted September 29, 2014. Also glad to hear that Cruise Connect are as good as Eavesway. Booked with them for September 2015. This was free as part of an offer a few months ago so we had no choice in the provider. The only snag is we have to go from a different pick up point in Bolton.

  7. How good is the coach transfer?

Cruise Connect are now the contracted transfer company for P&O. Going to take them from Southampton to Heathrow next year, post Adonia. Are they ok? Had a bad experience with Eavesway a couple of years ago, multiple ship servicing, had to wait 3 hours on the coach at Southampton, never again.

  9. Cruise connect

We've booked direct with Eavesway as it seems Cruise Connect out source their coaches. We're on the 7.45 from Norton St. There is a Princess & Royal Caribbean leaving Southampton the same day as us so plenty of traffic heading that way.

  10. Testimonials

"I would just like to say we used Eavesway last year to connect with our Celebrity cruise and was so pleased with it. We are an elderly couple and don't like any complications. Everything went to plan with no worries at all. We will certainly use you again in the future. Thank you for a great experience" "I appreciate your concerns for us.

  11. A successful strategy: The Eavesway Travel approach

  14. Eavesway travel to Southampton

From Keele Services it is usually 8:30 - 9:00 whereas Intercruises are around 10:00. We have used both Eavesway and P&O but will now only use Eavesway. From Carlisle the pick up is much later for Eavesway than for cruise Connect/Intercruise.

  15. Cruise Connect or Eavesway Cruiselink

Eavesway everytime for us, we went with Cruise Connect 2 years ago as it was the free offering from Cunard and we travelled to Southampton on a coach that was so old and in such poor cxondition that we were concerned as to whether it would actually manage to reach Southampton.
