Top 8 Ways to Fix Safari Not Loading Websites and Pages on Mac

Thanks to the groundbreaking Apple M1 chip , the popularity of the Mac lineup is rising to new heights. On macOS, most users stick with what comes out of the box and that includes the Safari browser. While it gets the job done with a nice look and a good set of extension lists, sometimes, you run into websites not loading issues on the Safari browser. Mac not loading websites and pages mostly happens on Safari browser, sometimes due to Webkit. Before you go ahead and download Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge for macOS, do check out the troubleshooting guide below to fix the issue.

Fix Safari on Mac Not Loading Websites Issue

There are many factors behind the strange behavior. We will go through some of the basic steps and jump to extreme actions only if it doesn’t solve the issue.

1. Check Internet Connection

This one is obvious. You should check if the Mac is properly connected to the internet. A sketchy internet connection might interfere with the website loading performance. It’s especially true when you try to load heavy web pages with lots of images and videos in Safari.

Go to the macOS menu bar and click on the Wi-Fi icon. Make sure that it’s connected to the 5G network and not the 2.4G. I usually face this issue on my MacBook Air. Every now and then, my MacBook Air decides to connect to the 2.4G band and not the 5G band. The practice results in extremely long webpage loading times.

2. Reset Router

Sometimes, the real culprit can be the router that you are using for the Wi-Fi connection. In such cases, you won’t be able to connect to the internet on any device, let alone loading websites on the Mac.

In such cases, you need to reset the router or upgrade the firmware to the latest version available. Try connecting to the internet and browse the web comfortably.

3. Disable Extensions

Extensions play a major role in any browser’s ecosystem. The Safari browser is no exception here. Apple tightly controls the whole experience and only allows legitimate extensions from the App Store.

However, some extensions might go out of date or become incompatible with the new macOS version resulting in Safari not loading websites on Mac.

It can be hard to determine which extension is causing Safari to not load pages. In such cases, you need to disable all extensions and try your luck with the web browser again. Follow the steps below.

1. Open the Safari browser.

2. Click on the Safari option in the Menu bar.

3. Go to Preferences .

4. Move to the Extensions menu.

5. On the right side, you will find all the installed extensions.

6. Select an extension one by one and use the Uninstall button from the right side to remove them.

4. Uninstall AdBlocker

No, I’m not talking about the Adblocker extension in a browser . Many users opt for a system-wide adblocker such as AdLock to remove any kind of ads from the OS.

These programs might affect the webpage performance on the device. If you are using such software then you need to uninstall the program.

Open the Finder menu on Mac. Go to the Applications option. Identify the culprit app and move it to the Trash .

5. Disable VPN

VPN apps allow you to establish a secure and private network connection . Some websites might not be accessible from the selected VPN location. You need to disable VPN and try the website loading again.

quit vpn on mac

Most VPN apps for Mac offer a shortcut through the menu bar. Click on the VPN icon in the menu bar and turn off the service.

6. Clear Cache

A bad cache can ruin the day. It’s always advisable to clear cache and cookies from the browser at a regular interval. We are going to apply the same trick here to fix the website not loading issue on the Mac. Go through the steps below.

clear history in safari on mac

3. Go to the Clear History menu.

4. The following menu will offer to delete all the browsing history along with cookies and related website data.

7. Update macOS

Safari not loading pages issue might be due to the recent macOS bug. Thankfully, Apple is quick to fix such annoyances. Go to the System Preferences > Software Update and install the latest macOS build.

8. Switch to a Chromium Browser

Chromium is a universally accepted rendering engine. Some websites are specifically designed keeping Chromium in mind. The Safari browser uses a Webkit rendering engine to load web pages. You can switch to the Safari rival such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge and try accessing the website again.

Wrap Up: Safari in Mac Not Loading Websites

Go through the troubleshooting tips above and one of them should easily fix the website not loading on Mac issue. For me, the cache and VPN tricks work all the time to fix the website loading issues on Safari.

Safari not working

safari problems mac

Experiencing difficulties with Safari on your Mac? Don’t fret – this comprehensive guide is here to help. Whether you’re facing issues with loading web pages, signing in, or dealing with unexpected browser behavior, these troubleshooting tips may be just what you need.

First, we’ll address some common issues that can plague Safari users on a Mac. Then, we’ll explore solutions that can help you overcome these challenges. And finally, we’ll delve into some additional settings and tools that might be worth checking out. Let’s dive in!

Why is Mac Safari not working?

There could be numerous reasons why your Mac’s Safari isn’t working, including a one-time bug, a missing update, a problematic extension, and more.

Some common issues you might encounter with Safari on your Mac include:

  • Empty web pages, partial content display, or other unforeseen behavior.
  • Inability to sign in to a particular site, despite entering valid login details.
  • Sites requesting cookie removal or reset.
  • Safari lagging, freezing, or suddenly shutting down.

Safari not working fix

If you are looking for a fix for your Safari not working as it should (or at all), we recommend trying the following troubleshooting methods that should help you resolve the problem:

Hit the refresh button

In Safari, head to the menu bar, click the View option and then select Reload Page .

reload page safari

Alternatively, you can use the Command-R keyboard combination to reload a web page. If Safari remains unyielding, close the app and attempt again. Should it persistently refuse to close, you can press together the Option , Command , and Esc keys to force it to quit.

If Safari reopens any unwanted sites, close it and then hold down the Shift key while reopening the browser. This manages which tabs and windows will automatically reopen in Safari.

Stay current with software updates and reboot

Upgrading macOS can also include Safari updates. If your Mac fails to restart on its own after updating, click on Apple menu > Restart. This ensures all vital background updates take effect.

Examine Safari extensions

Deactivate any Safari extensions by navigating to Safari > Settings (or Preferences) > Extensions and unchecking each one. If a troublesome extension is identified, verify it’s current. More details on Safari extensions can be accessed online.

Test out a private window

To stop websites from utilizing stored data (such as cookies and caches) that might be causing disruptions, view the site in a private window. Choose File > New Private Window or press Shift-Command-N. If successful, follow these instructions to eliminate the website’s data:

  • Navigate to Safari > Settings (or Preferences) > Privacy.

  • Click Remove, followed by Done.
  • Re-access the website in a non-private browser window.

Adjust Safari settings

Some pages may be incompatible with specific settings in your browser. To check your Safari settings, open the browser’s menu from the menu bar, then go to Settings (or Preferences ), select the Websites tab, and then open Privacy (or Security ). Modify privacy, security, and website settings as required to determine a functional combination.

Review iCloud Private Relay

For iCloud+ users employing the Private Relay feature, attempt reloading the page without it. Choose View > Reload and Show IP Address in Safari’s menu bar. This option is visible only when Private Relay is enabled. Additional information on iCloud Private Relay can be found online.

Check any VPN services or third-party security software you might be using

VPNs or other security software interacting with network connections could influence your browsing capabilities. Investigate potential network complications related to VPNs and similar software.

Assess network configurations

Altered proxy or DNS settings can impact access to online content. Determine if the issue persists across different browsers or devices on the same network, or reset your network settings by establishing a new network location on your Mac.

iPhone Safari not working

Are you tired of Safari, the native browser on your iPhone, iPad, or MacBook, not working as expected? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many Apple users face issues with Safari from time to time, but luckily, there are various solutions to get it back up and running.

Safari comes pre-installed on almost every Apple device, providing a fast and efficient browsing experience. However, occasionally, Safari may not work correctly, leaving you unable to access the internet. To help you get Safari back on track, we’ve compiled a list of possible fixes.

If you are having problems with your iPhone’s Safari not working, then here are the possible troubleshooting methods that you can try in order to take care of the issue:

Clear Safari cache

Clearing all of Safari’s data can also be helpful, particularly if you have a lower storage capacity on your iPhone or iPad. To clear Safari’s data, navigate to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. This will erase all extra data in the Safari app.

Update Safari

Keeping your iOS up-to-date can resolve issues with Safari. Apple is known for fixing widespread issues with their updates, so check for any available iOS updates on your iPhone or iPad.

A simple restart

First and foremost, try the classic solution: restart your device. Although it may sound like a cop-out solution, restarting your device can indeed help because this will clear its usable memory, speeding up Safari, and hopefully resolving any problems. If Safari is frozen or displaying a blank white screen, restarting your device might fix the issue.

Disable Safari Suggestions

Next, consider turning off Safari Suggestions. This relatively simple fix is often effective in resolving issues with Safari not loading or crashing. To disable suggestions, navigate to Settings > Safari > Safari Suggestions and toggle it off. While you’re at it, you can also turn off Search Engine Suggestions, as some users have reported this to be helpful.

Check your connection to the web

If you’re primarily connected to Wi-Fi, you may have disabled cellular data for Safari to save data usage. If your Wi-Fi isn’t functioning correctly, enabling cellular data could fix your issue. To do this, go to Settings > Cellular > Safari and toggle it on. Alternatively, try turning off Wi-Fi and connect using cellular data only. If this works, it indicates a network issue with your Wi-Fi.

Check your Screen Time and Content Restrictions settings

Have you ever altered your Screen Time settings or blocked certain websites? If so, try turning these settings off. Content Restrictions can inadvertently block websites you still want to use. To resolve this issue, go to Settings , then tap on Screen Time , open Content & Privacy Restrictions and then toggle it off if it’s currently enabled.

Reset the Network Settings

If you’ve encountered network-related issues before, resetting your Network Settings could help. To reset the Network Settings on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone (iPad) > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will only reset your Network Settings and won’t erase other data on your device.

Enable JavaScript

Ensure that JavaScript is enabled on your device, as it’s crucial for displaying interactive content on websites. To check if JavaScript is on and enable it if necessary, head to Settings > Safari > Advanced on your iOS or iPadOS device.

Perform a Factory Reset

When all else fails, consider resetting your iPhone to factory default settings. This will erase all data on your iPhone, and you’ll need to set it up from scratch. However, it’s a highly effective method for resolving various software issues. To reset your device, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone (iPad) > Erase All Content and Settings.

If you’ve tried everything and Safari still isn’t working, consider using an alternative browser while waiting for the next iOS update, which might contain a fix. Plenty of great browsers are available in the App Store that can cater to your needs. In the meantime, you can also start a new discussion in the Apple Discussions Community to see if others are facing similar issues.

iPad Safari not working

If the Safari browser on your iPad is not working properly, then we recommend trying out the solutions we’ve provided for when Safari is having problems on an iPhone. Since both devices use a very similar operating system, what works on iPhone should also work on an iPad.

How-To Geek

How to fix "this webpage was reloaded because a problem occurred" on a mac.

Safari is responsive and energy efficient, but it also comes with its own set of error messages which can be hard to diagnose.

Quick Links

What causes this error, possible fixes for "this webpage was reloaded...", always keep another browser handy.

Safari is a solid browser choice for Mac users because it's optimized to run well on Apple hardware and sip as little power as possible. That doesn't mean it's perfect, however, and web pages will crash from time to time.

So, what can you do about a problem web page?

This error can be caused by a number of issues, and it's hard to diagnose the exact cause. The most common causes are web pages that use significant resources, pages that consume a lot of physical memory, or incompatibilities with the current version of Safari you are running.

Often these errors occur sporadically, never to return again. The problem is worse when a particular website constantly causes the error to appear, which can result in Safari refusing to render it at all and showing an "a problem repeatedly occurred" error.

If the website in question is particularly demanding, users of older machines with limited resources may be more likely to encounter it. Due to the way Safari monitors how websites use your resources, it's not unusual to see the error even on new machines either.

You can always check your memory or CPU usage using Activity Monitor (search Spotlight or find it under Applications > Utilities) on the CPU and Memory tabs. Safari splits websites into separate processes, so if resources are to blame you should be able to tell here.

Related: How to See Which Program Is Using All Your CPU on Mac

The first thing you should check is that Safari is updated to the latest version under System Preferences > Software Update. Simply having the latest update for your version of macOS may not be enough, and you might need to upgrade your Mac to the latest version of macOS  to get the latest version of Safari.

Once you've determined your browser is up to date, consider what elements on the page may be causing the error. For example, if the website has a lot of rotating advertisements, JavaScript could be to blame. You might also have a cached version of the website causing problems.

These sorts of problems can be diagnosed using settings only available in Safari's Develop menu. To enable the menu, click on "Safari" in the top-left corner of the screen then choose Preferences followed by the Advanced tab. Enable "Show Develop menu in menu bar" and return to the webpage in question.

You can now use the Develop > Empty Caches menu bar option to delete any saved data causing an issue and try again. If JavaScript is to blame, you can disable it under Develop > Disable JavaScript.

Be aware that changing settings in the Develop menu may cause websites not to work properly. We recommend changing any settings back to default values when you're done using the problem website.

You can also try disabling any Safari plugins you have running or removing Safari extensions, too. As a last resort, enable "Block All Cookies" under Safari > Preferences > Privacy (but make sure you enable this setting again when finished so that other webpages function correctly).

It's not unusual to find out nothing you do will help, and that a certain website or web app is not compatible with Safari. The easiest fix in this instance is to simply use another browser like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox .

It's always a good idea to have another browser (or two) installed so that you have something to fall back on if you encounter problems with Safari. Broadly speaking though, Mac users should stick to Safari for its unbeatable speed and power efficiency.

Safari crashing on Mac? 11 Ways to fix it!

Safari has a series of commendable features, but once in a while, its loyal users may encounter crashes and glitches. If you are one of them, don’t worry. You can swiftly get your favorite browser back up and running by employing a few simple solutions. Follow this guide to explore the most common fixes to solve Safari crashes on Mac.

  • Force Quit and restart Safari
  • Clear Safari cache on Mac
  • Remove Safari History and Website Data
  • Delete Safari Extensions
  • Delete Safari preferences
  • Reset PRAM or NVRAM
  • Boot your Mac in Safe Mode
  • Run Disk Utility
  • Update Safari and update macOS
  • Reset your Mac

1. Force Quit and restart Safari

It can be frustrating to experience Safari crashes on Mac whilst you’re in the middle of a task. But fear not; follow the following steps to troubleshoot this problem completely.

Click apple logo, force quit safari

  • Once Safari successfully shuts down, wait for a few seconds.
  • Now restart the web browser like you normally do.

While this process is plain and simple, it tends to do the job. As you access your browser again upon successful termination, any lingering problems or conflicts should be resolved.

2. Clear Safari cache on Mac

It is worth noting that if this problem persists despite forced quitting, then you must consider a more comprehensive solution. Safari, like any other browser, stores temporary files and data to provide a faster response to its users for future visits.

However, over time, this cache can become clogged with excess data or corrupted files, resulting in crashes. Let’s explore how you can clear the same.

  • Click the Safari option from the menu tab.

Click Safari, Settings in Safari

  • If you want, you can close the preference menu now.

Click Develop, Empty Caches for All Profiles in Safari

  • Now let the process run its course and quit Safari .
  • Wait for a moment before you restart the Safari browser.

Hopefully, the problem is now rectified. Moreover, this process is not solely dedicated to bringing your browser back from the dead but also enhances browser performance and improves security. By following these steps, Mac users can ensure a seamless browsing experience on Safari and minimize disruptions caused by crashes.

3. Remove Safari History and Website Data

If Safari continues to crash, you should consider removing its history and website data. There’s a high chance that any conflicts or errors might resolve occurring within your browser.

  • Click History from the menu bar.

Click History, clear all history

Clearing history and website data not only helps fix potential crashes but also improves browser performance by freeing up disk space. However, it’s important to consider that following this method may result in removing the preferences and settings you saved earlier.

4. Delete Safari Extensions

Removing all active extensions from Safari can turn out to be very effective.

Extensions are basically a helping hand leading users to upscaled accessibility. However, these can often get in the way, becoming the source of conflicts and instability. As a result, it becomes prominent to get rid of extensions to enrich Safari with uninterrupted performance.

  • Navigate to the Extensions menu.

Click extensions, select an extensiion, click uninstall in Safari

  • Further, Disable the respective extension.

Click Show in Finder in Safari extensions

However, before you adhere to this process, it’s important to consider all drawbacks regarding the process. Ultimately, upon complying with the steps discussed above, you may lose a saved password and setting preferences.

5. Delete Safari preferences

For those who have just had it with Safari crashes, let’s try something extreme – completely removing Safari preferences. This process will get rid of every misconfigured setting that might be hindering the browser.

  • Force Quit Safari following the steps discussed above.
  • Launch Finder .

Select Go, Computers in Finder

  • In this instance, you must locate all files starting with “ com.apple.Safari” .
  • Select them all and perform the Move to Bin action.
  • Ensure to clear these files from Bin as well.
  • Now simply restart your Mac.

Upon completing these steps, the application will create a new set of preferences removing all aspects saved earlier. However, stay cautious, as this process will remove all customizations or saved data associated with Safari.

6. Clear RAM

A potential solution to Safari crashing on your Mac is clearing the RAM. Over a significant period of time, our devices get burdened with a series of activities. So, if Safari crashes frequently on your Mac, it might be due to insufficient memory required for smoother browser performance.

There are many apps that can clear your RAM in a jiffy. So, take a deep understanding of these  Mac cleaner apps  and find what suits your preference.

Moreover, it’s highly recommended to perform this action on a regular basis so that you’re not bothered by such issues anywhere in the future.

7. Reset PRAM or NVRAM

However, if you do not want to try something as harsh as resetting your entire system, there is a way out. You could always opt to reset the  PRAM or NVRAM of your Mac . Remember, the M series Macs perform this action on their own.

However, on the older Macs, it is solely dedicated to resetting certain settings such as screen resolution, sound volume, startup disk selection, and even Safari-related preferences. Overall, by resetting these memory components, you can resolve possible corruption files disrupting the smooth performance of Safari.

But this process somewhat depends on luck. This solution cannot guarantee the complete retrieval of Safari in comparison to other discussed solutions. It is also advisable to back up important data prior to attempting any changes to system settings.

8. Boot your Mac in Safe Mode

If you’re experiencing browser errors while using Safari, you can investigate and troubleshoot the issue by delving into the system settings via Safe Mode. It will allow you to determine whether the problem lies with an incompatible or malfunctioning software or extension.

For those who are unaware of this process, don’t worry; we have got a dedicated guide to accessing  Safe Mode on Mac .

Upon successfully navigating to Safe Mode on Mac, launch Safari again. If Safari responds according to your commands, then it’s safe to assume that a third-party app is interfering with your system performance.

You must now exit Safe Mode and proceed to remove recently installed extensions or applications that could cause this problem.

9. Run Disk Utility

Disk Utility can also help fix Safari crashes on Mac. This tool is integrated into your macOS by default exactly to encounter such errors. Let’s see how you can execute this tool:

  • Launch Finder on your Mac.

Click Applications, Utilities in Finder

  • Choose your primary drive . It is most likely to be named Macintosh HD .

Click First Aid in Disk Utility

  • Now, let the process run its course.

Note that you will not be able to interact with your computer until this process is complete.

Upon successful completion of the process, simply restart your Mac and test Safari again to see if it continues crashing. This method not only resolves the issues tampering with Safari but ensures the overall performance of your macOS.

10. Update Safari and update macOS

Apple regularly rolls out updates with the consciousness of removing common bugs and an overall improvement to the entire system. So, there is a high chance that Apple will provide an application update to resolve this issue seamlessly.

The same verifies macOS system updates as well. If there is no dedicated update available for Safari, you can opt to update your macOS for an overall upgrade. This should contribute positively towards eliminating Safari crashes on Mac.

If Safari is experiencing an issue that cannot be fixed, it is likely that Apple will investigate and promptly provide an update to resolve all problems for the users.

11. Reset your Mac

For those who heavily rely on Safari for their work, this problem can be pretty annoying and frustrating. They should consider performing a factory reset on your Mac .

This process will completely wipe away the entire cache, extensions, and plugins saved onto your device and mitigate crashes caused by conflicting software. Although, before you get started with this alternative, it’s wise to take a backup and store your important files away.

Contact Apple Support

Finally, if none of these steps prove successful, it may be worth contacting Apple Support or seeking assistance from a professional technician to further troubleshoot the problem.

They will guide you through more advanced troubleshooting steps or recommend potential software or hardware fixes tailored to your specific situation. You can further take part in Apple discussions to verify your concerns among fellow macOS users.

Yes, some third-party software or applications can interfere with Safari’s performance and cause crashes. Particularly, internet security suites or browser-related plugins may be problematic. Try disabling or uninstalling such software temporarily to see if it resolves the issue.

Yes, you can create a new user account on your Mac and try using Safari in that account. If Safari works fine in the new account, it suggests that the issue is related to your user account’s settings or preferences.

Reinstalling Safari is not recommended, as it is an integral part of macOS. However, you can reset Safari, as mentioned earlier, which can often resolve issues without the need for a full reinstallation.

Instagram Not Loading in Safari on Mac? 9 Ways to Fix It

Darryl Dsouza

Instagram is an extremely popular and widely used social media platform. Unfortunately, Instagram does not have a dedicated app for Mac. This means that Mac users have to access Instagram through Safari, and people have made peace with it. However, there has been a rising number of complaints about Instagram not loading in Safari on Mac. If you’re encountering a similar problem, we’ll help you fix the Instagram not loading in Safari on Mac issue.

How To Fix Instagram Not Loading in Safari on Mac

1. update macos to fix instagram not loading in safari on mac.

It would be safe to assume that the reason Instagram is not loading in Safari on Mac is due to software bugs in Safari or macOS. Why? Because numerous people have reported about this issue in the Apple Discussions forum and if you scroll down in the same thread, you will find several responses that claim updating macOS fixes the issue.

Now, since Safari is a part of macOS you can’t update it separately. However, the Safari browser updates alongside macOS. Therefore, please update macOS as it might help fix the Instagram not loading in Safari on Mac issue.

Time needed:  2 minutes

Steps to update macOS

Click General and select Software Update

2. Update Safari Without Updating macOS

Not all of us are using the latest Mac from Apple. Some of us are still on our five to ten-year-old Macs because they work just fine. Unfortunately, most of these older models have reached their end of life with regards to macOS updates (software updates) and don’t receive updates anymore.

If you’re in a similar position, you won’t be able to update macOS which in turn means you can’t update Safari and fix the Instagram not loading issue. However, that is not the case here. Older Macs have an update to Safari updating macOS.

  • Click the Apple logo at the top right corner of the menu bar.
  • Select the System Preferences… option.
  • Navigate to the Software Update option.
  • Now, click the More info… option located below the Updates Available section.
  • In the pop-up menu, select the Safari checkbox and then click the Install Now button.
  • After the update is downloaded and installed, we suggest that you restart your Mac.

3. Check Instagram Server Status

Instagram might not be loading because its servers are down. In this case, none of these troubleshooting methods can help you resolve the issue. Therefore, we suggest that you check Instagram’s server status before following any other troubleshooting methods.

  • Open Safari and head to downdetector.com .

Search for Instagram in Downdetector

In case Instagram servers are down, we suggest you wait until the company fixes the errors. After that, Instagram should load without any issues in Safari.

4. Switch to Private Browsing in Safari

If you haven’t already, we suggest opening a Private Window in Safari and checking if Instagram loads and works fine. Because, a Private Window, a.k.a. Private Browsing mode doesn’t use cookies, cache, or any other website data stored on your Mac. Hence, if issues with this data prevent Instagram from loading in Safari, it won’t affect the Private Window.

  • Open Safari on your Mac.
  • Click the File option in the menu bar.
  • Select the New Private Window option from the list and use Private Browsing Mode in Safari on Mac.
  • Log in to Instagram and check if the issue has been resolved.

5. Disable iCloud Private Relay

iCloud Private Relay is meant to help protect your privacy when browsing the web in Safari. While it is a useful feature, users have reported that disabling iCloud Private Relay helped fix Instagram not loading in Safari on Mac.

  • Select the System Settings… option.
  • Click the “ Your Name ” Apple ID option at the top of the sidebar.
  • Next, click the iCloud option and then click the Private Relay option on the next screen.
  • Click the Turn Off… button located to the right of the Private Relay option.
  •  Two options will appear: Turn Off Until Tomorrow and Turn off Turn Off Private Relay. If you want to disable iCloud Private Relay temporarily select the Turn Off Until Tomorrow button and if you intend to keep it turned off, select the Turn Off Private Relay button.
  • Finally, click the Done button to save the changes.

6. Disable VPN To Fix Instagram Not Loading in Safari on Mac

Just like iCloud Private Relay, the VPN your Mac is connected to, is preventing Instagram from loading in Safari. Problems like these happen often and disabling the VPN service on your Mac might help fix it.

  • Click the VPN option in the sidebar.

Disable VPN from System Settings on Mac to Fix Instagram Not Loading in Safari on Mac

  • If this doesn’t work, click the VPN service’s logo in the menu bar.

Disable VPN from the menu bar

7. Disable Extensions

Yes, Safari Extensions can also be the reason why Instagram isn’t loading on your Mac. We suggest that you disable these extensions and restart your Mac. After that you should open Instagram in Safari and check if it loads or not.

  • Open Safari on your Mac.

Head to Safari Settings

  • Click the Extensions tab.

Disable Extensions in Safari Settings to Fix Instagram Not Loading in Safari on Mac

If you have any doubts, please refer to our guide, “ How to Manage Extensions in Safari on Mac .”

8. Remove Website Data To Fix Instagram Not Loading in Safari on Mac

Corrupt website data might prevent websites from functioning smoothly. In case Instagram is loading in Safari due to this reason, you must remove the Website Data as it might help resolve the issue.

  • Click the Safari option in the menu bar and then select the Settings… option.

Click the Manage Website Data button

  • On the next screen, click the Remove All button.

Click the Remove All Button to Fix Instagram Not Loading in Safari on Mac

9. Switch to a Different Browser

If nothing works, the last option is to switch to a different web browser. You can switch to any browser of your choice like Opera One . While I understand that you might be used to using Safari, you can at least try this browser for the time being. Opera One can load Instagram without any issues and you can use them as a temporary solution until the issue with Safari is resolved.

We hope this guide helps you fix Instagram not loading in Safari on Mac. If you have any doubts, please let us know in the comments below.

macOS bugs causing sporadic browsing issues with Safari, Firefox, others

According to user reports on the Apple Support Communities, the Safari 14.1 update breaks functionality on popular websites like eBay. The issue appears to predominantly affect Safari 14.1 on macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave.

There are reports from developers about ongoing problems with the latest versions of Apple's browser, too. Google Chrome developer advocate Jake Archibald reports that localStorage in Safari 14.1 is broken, causing tabs with use the same localStorage for text boxes.

localStorage is broken in Safari 14.1. Tabs end up with seperate localStorage for reading, but the same localStorage for writing. This will likely result in data loss for users. (h/t @forresto ) https://t.co/5Ljxl4vvbH — Jake Archibald (@jaffathecake) May 4, 2021

Other reports indicate that Safari 14.1 for macOS Mojave and macOS Catalina also has problems with WebAuthN. According to Eclectic Light , Apple pulled the Safari 14.1 update for both of those macOS versions on May 1.

AppleInsider staff members have also run into website problems with macOS Big Sur and Safari 14.1. Problems across our staff don't stop at those browsers, since we've also noticed website functionality issues in Firefox and Google Chrome on sites like eBay and others.

As far as potential fixes, there doesn't appear to be anything surefire. Some users report that disabling JavaScript in Safari preferences seems to resolve some of the issues. The troubleshooting advice given by other users in the Apple Support Forums suggest that a clean reinstall of the operating system solves the problem, but AppleInsider can confirm that this is not a universal solution.

In the meantime, it appears that Apple is aware of the problems and is likely working on a fix, as evidenced by the removal of Safari 14.1 for macOS Mojave and macOS Catalina.

Here’s why I finally gave up on using Safari on my Mac

Alex Blake

I have a web browser confession to make: I’m an inveterate tab hoarder. I’ve tried to change. I’ve tried to cull open tabs and tried to resist opening new ones — but somehow the open tab counter just keeps on rising. At this point, I think I’m beyond saving.

The tab problem

Sharing is caring, playing catchup.

What I’ve learned is that I need a web browser that can accommodate me, that has learned to accept my tab-based failings without judgement or chastisement. And after many years of trying, it turns out that Safari is not that browser.

Safari treats tabs in the same way that Google Chrome does (and the same goes for all Chromium-based browsers like Edge, in fact). That is, the more tabs you open, the smaller each individual tab gets. If, like me, you have dozens or even hundreds of tabs open at a time, each one is shrunk down to the size of a pinhead in the tab bar.

  • Apple quietly backtracks on the MacBook Air’s biggest issue
  • As a recent Mac convert, here’s what has surprised me most
  • Here’s why 2024 is going to be a slow year for the Mac

Needless to say, this is pretty anxiety-inducing, as it’s a pain to find whichever tab it is that I’m looking for. Sure, I could always, you know, clear out my tabs, but who knows when I might need that article on the perfect way to iron my shirts? It could be right now. Bookmarking it and forgetting about it simply isn’t an option.

Instead of being more measured with my tab usage like a proper adult, I’ve taken the easy way out and switched to a better browser alternative: Firefox. Unlike Safari, when Firefox reaches a certain tab threshold, it lets you scroll the tab bar. Tabs stay a reasonable size and never shrink down to an unmanageable dimension. It’s enabling my bad habits, and I love it.

I’ve actually used Firefox for over 15 years now, and I’ve previously written about why I love it so much . But while it was always my go-to Windows browser, Safari still clung on while I was using my Mac. Recently, I finally pulled the plug and switched over to Firefox on my Mac, and I couldn’t be happier.

As I’m someone who regularly uses both Windows and macOS, I find myself frequently sending content from one device to another. Apple’s ecosystem is great for that (hello, AirDrop ), but going from Windows to macOS and back again isn’t so straightforward.

That is manifestly the case when it comes to sending myself web content. Apple pulled Safari from Windows years ago, so if I’m reading a webpage on Safari on my Mac, I have to email it to myself if I want to read it on my PC. It feels like it’s 2005 all over again.

If I use Firefox on my Mac, though, I can simply use its Send Tab to Device feature to ping the website across to Firefox running on my PC. It takes just a second and doesn’t clog up my email inbox. The irony is that Firefox is essentially setting up the kind of walled-garden ecosystem that Apple has long perfected.

Despite what I’ve said so far, it wasn’t just Safari’s tab management that forced my hand, although that played a big part in it. For one thing, both Safari and Firefox are some of the best browsers for privacy and have a plethora of privacy-protecting features built in. In that regard, switching to Firefox on my Mac didn’t feel like a step back at all.

But there’s something else, and it comes down to a more fundamental problem I have with Safari: it constantly feels like it’s playing catchup. We had to wait years before it got multiple browsing profiles , something rivals have long since baked in as standard in their own browsers.

Even worse, we had to wait until November 2023 to get favicons in the favorites bar. That’s right, websites saved to the toolbar have only just gained this key visual cue, literally years after every other browser implemented the feature.

In the end, it was a combination of all these factors that led me to give up Safari on my Mac. I used it for years because, as the default macOS web browser, it was easy. But sometimes you’ve got to go beyond the default to find something better.

Every time I sit down and use my Mac, I’m reminded that it’s full of advanced features and clever extras. Yet there’s one place that absolutely does not apply: the clipboard. Copying and pasting in 2023 feels like it’s stuck in the past with no prospect of salvation.

At least, it did feel that way until I came across an app called Paste. This superb utility has taken a knife to copying and pasting and made it… fun? I never thought I’d say that about such a mundane task, but here we are -- it’s true. Stacked with features

I'm pretty much always using a new laptop as my daily driver -- whichever one that I'm testing for review. And in 2023 alone, I've reviewed almost 40 machines, ranging from near-budget machines with solid performance and impressive features all the way up to innovative devices like the HP Spectre Foldable PC.

But occasionally, there's a lull in new releases, which gives me a chance to do a gut check. Which laptop do I return to as my primary work machine? To my own surprise, it's none of the flashy new releases from 2023. It's a laptop from way back in 2021 that remains my favorite. Not coincidentally, it's the only laptop I've purchased myself in years. That laptop is the first-gen Apple MacBook Pro 14, and it's held up so well against the competition that I still haven't felt compelled to replace it. Here's why. The display continues to blow me away

Shortcuts is probably the most frustrating app I’ve used on macOS. Not because it’s a bad app -- it’s actually one of the best Mac apps you can get -- but because Apple gives next to no support on how to use such a powerful part of its operating system. It’s like being given a supercar, but the dealership forgot to include the keys.

Most of the time in macOS, the low level of official support is not a problem. But with Shortcuts, it's detrimental. Apple needs to do more

Apple Vision Pro natural input support comes to WebXR with Safari

Avatar for Zac Hall

Apple recently released visionOS 1.1 , bringing higher quality Persona avatars and enterprise support to Apple Vision Pro. The software update also introduces support for a significant advancement in immersive web experiences.

As UploadVR points out, WebXR on Safari for Vision Pro has been missing a key input method until now. Starting with visionOS 1.1, Safari introduces support for the default gaze-pinch control method for WebXR experiences.

The change is documented in detail in a WebKit blog post from this week:

Apple Vision Pro is here, and with it, a lot of excitement about the possibilities for WebXR in visionOS. Support is in progress, where you can test it today. WebXR now includes a more natural and privacy-preserving method for interaction — the new  transient-pointer  input mode — available for Safari 17.4 in visionOS 1.1. Let’s explore how natural input for WebXR works, and how to leverage it when developing a WebXR experience for Apple Vision Pro.

In the blog post, the WebKit team explains how Vision Pro’s natural input method wasn’t originally considered for WebXR:

The initial web standards for WebXR assumed all input would be provided by persistent hardware controllers. Since the natural input interaction model of visionOS differs from XR platforms which rely on listening to physical controllers and button presses, many existing WebXR experiences won’t work as intended on Apple Vision Pro. We’ve been collaborating in the W3C to incorporate support for the interaction model of visionOS into WebXR. And we’re excited to help the WebXR community add support to popular WebXR frameworks.

WebXR support on Vision Pro is disabled by default. However, users can enable the feature in Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Feature Flags. Learn more here .
