Dining on-board Scenic - River cruise

Dress codes can vary depending on your cruise line, time of day and even where you sail.

Suitcase space is limited so we have compiled a guide on our river cruise lines and their dress codes to make it easy for you to plan your outfits!

AmaWaterways

Wine tasting on-board AmaWaterways - River cruise

The AmaWaterways dress code suggests country club casual on-board their ships, such as cotton or linen clothes. This could include trousers and shirt for men – without the need for a tie or jacket – and dresses or trousers with a blouse for women. During the Captain’s Dinner, guests are advised to dress up a little more in suits and cocktail dresses.

Group on-board Amadeus ship - River cruise

Guests on-board Amadeus are made to feel comfortable, with no specific dress code on-board. For dinner and special occasions, Amadeus are advised to wear elegant clothing.

Recommended items of clothing include comfortable walking shoes, sturdy sandals, a lightweight waterproof jacket and long sleeve shirts as some ports and excursions are over uneven terrain and can be quite cool.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon river cruise ship

The dress code on-board Avalon Waterways is casual and comfortable, with the cruise line looking to make you feel at home on-board. However, during occasions such as the Captain’s Reception and the Farewell Dinner some guests prefer to dress up a little more.

The only specifications are as follows:

  • Guests are not permitted to wear shorts in the Dining Room or Panorama Lounge in the evenings
  • Bathing suits are worn only on the Sky Deck

CroisiEurope

CroisiEurope - Dining room

CroisiEurope advises for guests to don a casual outfit during the day, recommending light suits and swimwear for warm weather and a sweater or jacket for cooler weather.

For dinners, cocktails and galas, CroisiEurope advises guests to dress up a little more with gentlemen wearing a jacket and tie.

Crystal Cruises

Couple on-board Crystal River cruise

On-board a Crystal river cruise, guests are advised to wear comfortable and casual wear during the day. This includes the dining room, however, swimswuits, cover-ups, robes and baseball caps are not appropriate in the dining room during the day.

In the evenings, the dress code is Crystal Casual which is a dressed-up version of daytime dress code. Crystal Casual includes:

  • Women – Blouse, sweater, dress slacks, skirt and dresses
  • Men – Open-collar shirt, collared polo shirt, button-down shirt, dress shirt, dress pants and smart trousers. Sports coats are optional and no tie is required

Emerald Waterways

Couple on-board Emerald Waterways

On-board Emerald Waterways guests are advised to follow a relaxed and comfortable dress code. In the evenings, the cruise line operates a smart-casual dress code including open-neck shirts with slacks and dresses. Guests can wear ties and jackets if they desire, but this is not required.

Emerald Waterways also hosts a Captain’s Reception, where guests may want to don their finery – though this is more cocktail dresses than ball gowns.

Couple on-board boat for a river cruise shore excursion

On-board APT river cruises the dress code is smart casual, though the cruise line advises on comfortable footwear for all tours and light, casual clothing for adventure tours.

Riviera Travel

River cruise ship - Riviera Travel

Riviera Travel also carries a relaxed dress code, with comfortable and casual clothing alongside walking shoes for the day. In the evenings, guests can dress a little smarter – though this is not required.

On every cruise there’s a Captain’s Welcome Drink and Farewell Dinner, for these most guests dress up a little more though there’s no need for black tie or ball gowns.

Scenic River

Couple on the bikes - Scenic River

Guests are free to wear what they wish during their time on-board Scenic River. However, it’s worth packing for the weather on your cruise depending on the regions you’re visiting.

Daytime dress codes are comfortable and casual, with a dress or two for the formal evening occasions.

Scenic advises guests to pack a comfortable pair of shoes for excursions and sandals for if the weather is warm. During specific Freechoice or Enrich events, bring a pair of smart shoes or heels.

Krems, Austria - River cruise tour

Shearing has no dress codes throughout your journey, though you are travelling via coach and river cruise ship so we would suggest comfortable and casual clothes for the day, with something a little smarter for the evenings.

Bulgaria, Europe - River cruise

Tauck does not have a strict dress code and advises guests to pack comfortable and convenient clothes for both day and night. A slightly dressy outfit for certain evenings including the following:

  • Men – A blazer or sports coat, chinos and polo shirt
  • Women – Skirt, dressy top or simple dress

Group on bikes - Uniworld River Cruise

Uniworld advises guests to pack for a range of weather conditions, though there is no strict dress code on-board. Both onshore and on-board the cruise line recommends comfortable, smart-casual clothing including sturdy walking shows for shore excursions.

When dining ashore, attending special events or concerts men may want to bring a sports jacket and women a cocktail dress or pantsuit – ties are optional. On-board, the only advisories are that shorts are not allowed at dinner.

U by Uniworld

Guests on-board U by Uniworld

U by Uniworld’s dress code is straight and simple. They simply require guests to come as you are, with no requirements for dining or excursions.

Viking River

Viking River - Guests enjoying dinner on-board

Dress is casual on-board Viking River, with shorts, slacks or jeans advised. Swimsuits, brief shorts, cover-ups and exercise attire should be reserved for the Fitness Centre, pool areas and Sports Deck.

Though there are no formal nights on-board Viking River cruises, evening dress is elegant casual across all dining venues, performances and special events. This includes:

  • Women – Dress, skirt or slacks with a sweater or blouse
  • Men – Trousers and collared shirt with a tie and jacket being optional

Jeans are not permitted at this time and evening dress excludes World Cafe where the dress remains casual after 6pm.

What to Wear on a River Cruise in Europe - Packing List

What to Wear on a River Cruise in Europe

River cruises are more casual than ocean cruises. They’re more about experiencing the culture and sights of Europe and less about having a fun vacation on a big ship (like you would on a Caribbean cruise). When working out how to dress for a European river cruise you’ll need to think about comfort, packability, layering and European culture.

You’ll spend your days sightseeing around the streets of Europe so comfortable but relatively smart but casual clothes are ideal. Comfortable walking shoes are a must! Many of the excursions on European river cruises are walking tours. You’ll also likely visit churches and culturally significant sights that may require covered shoulders and knee length clothes. Pack a light scarf in summer to throw over your shoulders. Avoid short shorts & skirts and opt for capri pants & midi skirts instead.

Make sure you choose items that pack well. You won’t have an iron in your cabin so you’ll need to pack clothes with wrinkle resistant fabrics. A small travel-sized bottle of Downy Wrinkle Release can help with this too. It also gives clothes a quick refresh allowing you to wear items more than once.

Types of European River Cruise Outfits

  • Casual clothes for cruising – Comfortable but smart casual clothing is the go when cruising in Europe. A t-shirt or sleeveless vest with jeans, capris or a skirt is enough.
  • Comfortable shoes –  Comfortable shoes are a must for European travel.
  • Non-formal evening wear – There often isn’t time or a need to change for dinner on a river cruise so don’t feel you have to. We usually prefer to change for dinner, even if that means a quick freshen up and changing from a t-shirt into a nicer top.  Lightweight, chiffon evening tops are great to pack for evenings on cruises. Wear them over jeans or capris. They don’t take up much space but add a little oopmh to your outfit.
  • Formal evening wear – Most European river cruises do not have a formal night. If they do, you’ll find the dress code for river cruises isn’t as strict as for ocean cruises. There’s no need to go over the top on formal night on river cruises in Europe. You can wear black pants and dressier top or a simple black dress and pashmina. No need to bring heels, your sandals will do fine. Pop on a statement necklace and you’re good to go. Men can pack a sport coat if they like but a long sleeved shirt and pants will do.

Dressing for the Season

If you’re traveling outside the peak of summer weather can be quite changeable so clothes you can layer are ideal. Check the long range weather forecast on a site like Accuweather when planning out what to wear on a Viking river cruise to help.

We have noted different quantities for items based on season in our packing list below but here is a quick guide on what to wear on a river cruise in Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall:

  • River Cruising in Summer – Summer river cruise attire is pretty easy. Think light summer dresses, capris & vest tops, skirts and blouses. Make sure you pack at least one cardigan in case of chilly nights or the odd cooler day.
  • River Cruising in Spring – Spring in Europe can bring nice weather but it can also be changeable. Layering is key. Bring a couple of cardigans for over dresses and tees. Add in an extra pair of jeans. A light jacket like a denim jacket or utility jacket will also prove useful. April is notoriously wet in Europe so a waterproof jacket would be a good idea.
  • River Cruising in Fall – When packing for river cruise in Europe in the Fall, add in a few warmer layers like long sleeved tees, cardigans, leggings. A light waterproof layer like this is a must. In late Fall, a packable lightweight down jacket like this is also very useful to have in case of cold days.  You’ll also want a pair of closed toe shoes like a comfortable ankle boot for walking in wet weather.
  • River Cruising in Winter – For winter river cruises in Europe, you’ll need a few more warmer layers, hat, gloves, scarf and ankle boots. Add in a packable down jacket and waterproof parka. Leave out the summer dresses and instead pack a few more jeans and jumpers. Merino layers like this are useful for providing extra warmth in cold weather.

Tips on How to Pack for a River Cruise

Know you know what to wear on a scenic river cruise, let’s go over how to pack for a river cruise. When packing for a European river cruise, you need to account for how many travel days you have before and after your cruise, how long your trip to Europe is and how you’ll be getting around once in Europe pre and post-cruise.

Here are a few tips for packing for a river cruise:

  • Pack light for Europe – If you pack light and smart then you’ll be able to fit this packing list into a carry on sized suitcase. Travel with just a carry on sized suitcase if you can manage.
  • Pick a color scheme – It makes it easier to mix & match outfits if you stick to a color scheme. Choose a few base neutrals like black, tan, navy & white for your pants, capris, skirts and outerwear. Add in a pop of co-ordinating color or print with your tops, tees, blouses and dresses. It makes it so much easier to dress! when all your tops go with all your bottom
  • Go for carry on sized luggage – Even if you plan on checking your bag for convenience on travel days, we still recommend using a small cabin sized suitcase for your European river cruise. It’s so much easier to travel in Europe with a smaller suitcase! Space is limited in Europe and a smaller bag is easier for travel on trains in Europe, impossibly small hotel elevators, tiny hotel rooms and the ship’s cabin.
  • Pack with packing cubes – Using packing cubes helps you organize your luggage efficiently, makes it easier to pack & unpack and helps you pack less. Use a large packing cubes for jeans, shorts & outwear, a medium sized packing cube for tops and a small packing cube for underwear. You can get packing cubes here on Amazon.
  • Get a hanging toiletry bag – A hanging toiletry bag is so much easier for cruising. This one by eBags is ideal as it packs flat and is easy to lay across the top of your suitcase contents.
  • Use a lightweight backpack or cross body travel bag for excursions – A lightweight backpack like this is great for excursion days. You can fold it up and pack it away in your luggage when not in use. For city excursions in Europe, a cross body bag works very well. Travel cross body bags like this with built in security to prevent pickpocketing and bag slashing are ideal. You can also get small backpacks like this with built in antitheft technology too.

A first-timer's guide to river cruising

Everything you need to know if you're new to river cruising

river cruising for first timers

If you've never been on a river cruise before, you've come to the right place, as we've answered some of the most common questions travellers ask before embarking on their first sailing.

From why a river cruise might be better for you than an ocean cruise, to what to expect and the dress code for river ships, you'll want to keep reading for our first-timer's guide to river cruising.

Why should I choose a river cruise over a cruise at sea?

A river cruise is a more boutique cruising option and is ideal for travellers looking for their first cruising experience. With smaller ships and fewer passengers on board, river cruises feel more intimate and relaxed.

They're also a more cost-effective way of having a big adventure, as you’ll visit a variety of places over the course of the trip, meaning you can tick various destinations off your travel bucketlist for the price of one holiday. Many river cruises are also all-inclusive, which means you don’t have to think about the day-to-day costs of your holiday.

Eco-conscious travellers might also want to choose a river cruise over an ocean voyage, as smaller ships are kinder to the environment than larger vessels.

river cruise guide

Unlike cruises at sea , river cruises usually take you to the centre of the city you're visiting so you can do more sightseeing and spend less time making your way to the destination. The ports are the main attraction on a river cruise, so you can tick more beautiful places off your travel bucket list.

river cruise guide for first timers

You'll also find that river cruise ships are less entertainment-packed than larger cruise ships , which often impress travellers with sprawling water parks, theatres and cinemas.

On a river cruise, the entertainment is more low-key and could include live music in a lounge bar, an educational seminar, or a cooking demonstration - as on our cruise of Bordeaux with Raymond Blanc.

What can I expect on a river cruise?

Depending on the ship and destinations you visit, there's plenty to experience on a river cruise holiday. Throughout your trip, you can enjoy excursions and activities in the location you're visiting, as you would on a land-based holiday.

This could involve wine tastings and vineyard tours, which will be a big part of our cruises through Bordeaux and the Douro Valley this year. Other itineraries might take you to iconic historic monuments, like our cruise through Venice , which includes a visit to St Mark's Basilica for an atmospheric lighting ceremony and VIP access to Doge's palace during an early morning visit.

Unlike a cruise at sea, a river cruise allows you to be immersed in nature and feel closer to the surroundings as you make your way down rivers, such as the Douro , or the waterways of Venice .

While on board, you can expect a range of cabin types, from spacious rooms with queen beds to luxurious suites with lounge areas, walk-in wardrobes and private balconies. You might also find loungers on the sun decks for you to soak up the sun as you drift along the waterways.

Scenic Diamond, for example, which you can experience on a French river cruise with chef Raymond Blanc , features a stylish sun deck and a swimming pool, sparkling marble interiors, chic furnishings, and first-class suites.

With multiple onboard restaurants, you’ll be able to sample a number of cuisines during your trip, and Scenic Diamond even has its own cookery school, Scenic Culinaire where you can enjoy live demonstrations and classes.

river cruise guide

Most river cruise ships are expertly designed to allow you to appreciate glorious landscapes and cityscapes you'll be passing. Take the lovely A-Rosa Alva, for example, your home-from-home on our eight-day cruise along the Douro . This boutique ship is specifically designed to allow you to soak in the glorious views along the Douro River and boasts a sun deck with recliners, a heated outdoor pool and panoramic windows in most of the cabins.

Many ships also have complimentary bikes so you can explore your surroundings more fully when you disembark at a port.

Tell me more about the ships...

There are different types of river cruise ships and it will depend on the destination you choose as to which ship serves the route. What many have in common are facilities to ensure you can relax on board, as well as welcoming cabins and friendly service to make you feel at home in a boutique space.

river cruise guide

You won't find inside cabins on river cruise ships and as these vessels are smaller overall compared to their ocean counterparts, the cabins are smaller too. A river cruise ship could have around 60 to 90 cabins, while some of the ships at sea have thousands of cabins for passengers.

As the entertainment is more modest compared to what you'll find on a large cruise ship , the evenings can be spent in the lounge with a cocktail and enjoying some live music.

How do I know if a river cruise is for me?

A river cruise is ideal if you're looking to slow down from the hectic pace of everyday life and soak up the beauty of a variety of destinations.

Many river cruise itineraries are suited to lovers of culture who like to visit fascinating cities, too. Our cruise of the Venetian Lagoon , for instance, will take you to many of the region's best cultural monuments, including St Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, and the Santa María Asunta Basilica on Torcello.

Our boutique cruise around Venice also allows you to explore the Italian city without the stresses of having to navigate boat timetables or getting from one part of the city to the next.

river cruise guide

Travellers who prefer to keep moving can visit a different location every day. For example, on a cruise around Bordeaux and the Medoc with Raymond Blanc, you'll experience historic Blaye Fortress, the lively farmers markets of Libourne, and medieval Saint-Emilion. If you’re someone who likes your holidays packed with experiences, an excursion-rich river cruise like this could be an excellent choice.

River cruises are also enjoyable for travellers who don't drive or don't fancy planning a rail trip, as your transport is all taken care of. This is especially helpful if you are visiting wine country, like Bordeaux or the Douro Valley – you can enjoy tastings worry-free without having to arrange a taxi or appoint a designated driver.

river cruise guide

Will I have to organise my own shore excursions?

Another benefit of a river cruise holiday is handing over the planning and organisation of your trip to the professionals. You don’t need to figure out where you’re going or how you’ll get there, you can just sit back and enjoy your holiday as it unfolds.

Whether you like gourmet tastings and guided walks, visits to vineyards and olive farms, or browsing local farmers' markets, you'll find a range of excursions included in the price of your trip.

river cruising for first timers

Trips to food markets, walking tours around historical sites and the chance to get active exploring the scenery by bike are just a few of the amazing ways to get to know the destinations you're visiting.

Although an exciting schedule of activities will be arranged for you, there's usually a fair amount of free time factored into your itinerary, which you can either use to relax and make the most of the onboard facilities - or explore a little more on your own.

Is there a dress code?

The dress code for river cruises is typically smart casual, despite the often sumptuous interiors of the boats. You can leave your heels and ties at home for most river cruise holidays and consider them a city break on water, where you'll want to spend your days in comfortable clothing and footwear for exploring the highlights, and your evenings in smart casual attire as you relax and socialise in the onboard bars and restaurants.

river cruise guide

What you pack will depend on what's on your itinerary. Although most river cruises have a casual atmosphere, you could pack some smarter clothes if you have free time in cities like Paris and Venice , where you might want to visit some of the fancier restaurants and bars.

The dress code can also vary depending on the ship and theme of your cruise, so it’s best to check when you book.

Wondering what to pack for your upcoming river cruise? You’re not alone!

One of the most common queries we receive from new river cruise customers is about the dress code. With luggage space typically limited to one suitcase per person, knowing what to bring is essential.

Here’s the good news: leave your dinner jacket and evening gown at home!

The Casual Elegance of River Cruising

Unlike the formal attire often associated with ocean cruises, river cruising offers a more relaxed atmosphere. While dress codes can vary slightly from one cruise line to another, the overarching theme is comfort with a touch of smart casual.

Example of Storage Space on board the Scenic Jasper – Balcony Suite 205 sq ft

Wardrobe on river ship Scenic Jasper

What’s Different Onboard?

Storage Insights: In cabins like the Scenic Jasper’s Balcony Suite (205 sq ft) you’ll find ample hanging space and room under your bed for suitcases. Although space might seem tighter compared to ocean cruise cabins, your luggage allowance is the real limit, so pack without worry.

Wardrobe on board Scenic Jasper River Ship

Onboard Vibes:  Feedback from our guests suggests that the dress code onboard is largely influenced by fellow cruisers. While each line may offer recommendations, enforcement is rare. For daytime and excursions, think shorts or light trousers in warm weather, and jeans with jumpers when it cools down.

Dining Dress Code:  Lunch is casual, reflecting your daytime attire. Dinner, however, nudges towards smart casual, with shorts, T-shirts, and jeans generally discouraged. Special events like the Captain’s dinner are perfect for dressing up, though not mandatory. A cocktail dress or a jacket (tie optional) can elevate your evening.

scenic river cruises dress code

(Me, ready to get off and start exploring all that the Douro has to offer)

Excursion Essentials:  Comfort is key. Opt for comfortable walking shoes and clothes suitable for varying terrains. Don’t forget a light, water-resistant jacket and a sun hat for those sunny days. Remember, visits to religious sites may require modest attire; a scarf for covering shoulders is a respectful and easy option.

A Final Note:  While Italy may be stringent about dress codes in religious sites, adopting a respectful approach to attire is recommended wherever your excursions take you.

Packing for a river cruise doesn’t have to be stressful at all. With a focus on comfort, practicality, and a sprinkle of smart casual for dinners and special events, you’ll be all set for a memorable journey. Happy cruising!

7 things to expect on your first river cruise

A river cruise is a travel experience like no other. An intimate and boutique cruising option, it blends smaller ships and less passengers with diverse destinations.

You’ll have plenty of time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the views as you sail some of the world’s most storied waterways. From a cruise along the gentle waters of the Danube to a journey through picturesque French countryside it is such a serene and scenic experience. And what could be better than simply unpacking once and letting the crew take care of the rest?

Get set to explore the rivers of the world with a leisurely river cruise. Here’s what to expect as a first timer.

1. Smaller ships

The type of ship will depend on the destination and route you choose, but river cruise ships are much smaller than ocean cruise ships, and they accommodate fewer passengers. This means a more friendly and social atmosphere on board as the smaller ship size allows you to get to know your fellow passengers more easily.

Choosing a journey onboard a Viking river ship, for example, could see you sail on an elegant Longship – a state-of-the-art Scandinavian designed vessel, specially built to navigate the historic rivers on which they sail.

2. Scenic routes

Cruising is a cost-effective way of having a big adventure as you’ll visit several places during your trip. In fact, you can expect to visit a new destination every day on your river cruise.

River cruises offer stunning views of the countryside, as they navigate through rivers and canals. You’ll often pass by picturesque towns and villages and enjoy beautiful vistas of riverside landscapes and charming towns.

3. Inclusive packages

Many river cruises include everything in the upfront cost, such as meals, excursions, transfers, beverages and Wi-Fi. This makes budgeting and planning easier.

4. Culture up close

Unlike a cruise at sea, a river cruise allows you to be immersed in your surroundings as you make your way along your route.

Plus, you can enjoy guided excursions to historical sites and local experiences at each destination. With a Viking river cruise , an excursion is included at every port with local guides who will introduce you to their unique region. You can choose to join a range of included and optional excursions, like hiring an electric bike to cycle a valley, wine tasting in a centuries old winery or just choose to explore a destination on your own.

5. Comfortable accommodations

You’ll find beautiful, modern staterooms with balconies or large windows on your river cruise, so you can enjoy the views from your own room.

6. Smooth sailing

Rivers are generally calmer than open seas, so you’re less likely to experience seasickness on a river cruise.

It’s a smooth ride throughout, even as you pass through the river locks that feature on many European waterways.

7. Onboard luxuries

While river cruise ships are smaller, they still offer amenities such as lounges, fitness centres, and sometimes even pools or hot tubs.

Onboard dining options vary, but you can expect a mix of regional and international cuisine. Dining is often open seating, and you’ll likely have a choice of venues. Plus, if you cruise with Viking, you can dine alfresco on their Aquavit Terrace, the only true outdoor restaurant on the rivers of Europe.

The dress code on a river cruise tends to be more casual dress code compared to ocean cruises. There may be no formal nights, and business casual attire is usually acceptable.

How strict are they on this requirement?

As we will be doing some travel both before and after the cruise , we had each planned on taking a 'wheelie' cabin bag on our flights . Our suitcases will be withing the weight requirement but we wish to also bring on our 7kg cabin luggage. Will this be allowable by Scenic? And if not, what happens then?

We have been on many Ocean cruises with similar luggage, but this is our first time on a River cruise .

Any advice would be appreciated.

The 7kg in my opinion would be considered the equivalent of aforementioned backpack.

we took a small Carry on & a 26 " case each

As long as they will fit under the bed or in the closet you will be fine

The standard cabins are not large so storage is limited

Thanks for the advice.

My biggest concern was that our 'carry on" would be rejected at check in.'

Suitcases are unpacked and put under the bed. Cabin bag either put in the empty suitcase or at the bottom of the wardrobe.

You should be fine

Dress Aboard Scenic River Cruises

Do I have to pack a jacket and tie for a Scenic Douro cruise?

I was relying on the Scenic website , which says "The dress code across all Scenic cruise and tour itineraries is casual and comfortable. Dinner attire is smart casual — open-neck shirts, trousers and dresses; you may wear a jacket or blazer with a tie, but it is not required."

But the cruise packet from Scenic says ""For the evening meal we have a recommendation of a jacket or tie for the gentlemen and smart casual evening attire for the ladies. However, as the welcome and farewell evenings, Portobello's, L' Amor, Table la Rive and Table D'or dining are more formal occasions you may wish to dress accordingly."

Will I be uncomfortable if I don't bring a jacket and tie?

No need to take a jacket unless YOU feel more comfortable wearing one.

Just please don’t wear shorts to dinner personally when your asked politely not to and you do it’s particularly rude.  I’ll warn you the air con in the dinning room is excellent so ladies something for your shoulders I would recommend. My husband does like his jackets but does not like cardigans or jumpers although he now says he’s of an age when carting round a jacket is a phaph so it depends upon the time of year. Ladies  no need to pack anything really extra a bit of bling or a beautiful scarf or wrap is all that’s needed to add that little bit of jenasaqua. Just enjoy it seems to me that river cruising is just a tad more laid back than some ocean cruising!

Thanks so much both for your help! If it's plausible to even think about someone wearing shorts to dinner, it should be casual enough for me.   🙂  Don't worry - we won't pack shorts or short sleeves for Portugal in November.

Another question - our information packet said "Laundry Concierge will include washing and pressing services, and is limited to 1 kg of laundry per suite , once per cruise." That's two polo shirts and a pair of slacks - per suite. The phone agent wouldn't back off the 1 kg. She said we could pack as much as we could fit into the bag but it's a small bag.

So is it a normal laundry bag?

Tool worker if your on the Diamond deck you get two items pressed each day. Plus I’m pretty sure I got far more than  kg into the bag. The laundry on board is excellent.

Wings55

@toolworker  I did bring a jacket when we sailed with Scenic from Budapest to Amsterdam but others did not. These days I usually skip the jacket and bring some nice shirts and a few bow ties instead for a festive touch.

As far as shorts are concerned, they were fine at lunch time but never for dinner.

Enjoy your trip. Scenic is wonderful!

It is interesting to read this as there is conflicting information, and we have found it hard to get clarification! Our first river cruise will be the Christmas on the Danube this year and I am a notorious ‘over packer’. Being new to river cruising and our first Europe trip, we want to be prepared. If we are indeed able to have 2 items per cabin each day that is excellent new!

Dress code on Viking River cruise

By Steerpike58 , October 8, 2023 in River Cruising

We took a Viking Ocean cruise last year, and enjoyed the relaxed, casual atmosphere. I did take ONE long-sleeved collared shirt and 1 pr trousers just for the few specialty restaurants but otherwise, I preferred shorts, khaki's, and polo shirts.  Now we are about to embark on our first Viking River cruise, and I wondered if the same general approach applies - can I get away with casual gear most of the time? I'll be taking one pair of trousers (non-jeans) again, and a few long-sleeved shirts, so I hope that's good enough!

We went on Europe river cruise with Scenic - but  I expect dress codes much the same on Viking.

Weather was warm - low 20's to low 30's throughout the 2 weeks.

Day dress was casual and dinner dress maybe slightly smarter casual

Some people dressed up a bit for dinner, some not. About 1/4 of men shorts at dinner - not skimpy gym shorts of course but  cargo type almost to the knee  ones.

Before going I read that jeans at dinner were a faux pas - but reality said otherwise, jeans at dinner were not at all uncommon, men and women

There were a couple of dressier occasions - the captains welcome and farewell dinners and one night we went out to a concert in the evening- men wore smart collared shirts and chino type pants, with or without jacket, women wore smart dresses or pants with dressy top

A few men wore ties at these occasions but majority did not

so, yes, you will get away with casual gear most of the time and your good trousers and smart shirt for the few times you need to go step further.

Thanks

Dressing for dinner is more casual in Viking river dining rooms than Viking Ocean dining rooms. Neat jeans ok, very few (if any) men wear jackets.

Excellent Advice!

We don't travel with jeans because we don't find them comfortable for flights, and they are heavy in the luggage, so we would never be seen wearing jeans at dinner.

We come back from our day of excursions and whatever, freshen up and change to clean clothes for the evening.  This is generally what we will wear the next day on excursions.

You can read between the lines that we are very casual on a river ship, but on the dressier side of casual.  Most of our clothes are travel type clothes that don't wrinkle and look good in the evening, or on excursion.

And, even though I do agree that Viking Ocean is a bit dressier for dinner than Viking River, the clothes that we wear pass on both River and Ocean at night.

There is so much available now in the market that I consider travel clothing that looks good during the day and in the evening, that you don't need to be worried about dress code.

You can wear casual ALL of the time. Long trousers and long sleeve shirts are plenty good. There's no formal nights, no speciality restaurants.

This is what is on the Viking River Tours FAQ

What is the dress code?

During the day, dress is casual including shorts (if the season is warm), slacks or jeans and comfortable shoes for walking tours. There are no “formal nights” in the evening; recommended evening dress is “elegant casual.” For ladies, this may include a dress, skirt or slacks with a sweater or blouse; and for gentlemen, trousers and a collared shirt. A tie and jacket are optional.  Some shore excursions visit religious sites that require modesty of dress. To avoid being denied entry, we recommend men wear long pants and refrain from sleeveless shirts; and for women, clothing that covers the knees and tops that are not sleeveless or too revealing.

Note the words 'recommended' and 'may'. It's your holiday, wear what you're comfortable in. The indoor public areas  are airconditioned

I've been on 12 Viking River cruise. Having been retired now some years I like to have an excuse to dress up with a shirt, tie and jacket at dinner, but I'm in the minority. It doesn't bother me what others wear and to be frank I don't notice. (Except  on one cruise where a chap wore a filthy baseball cap indoors at every meal)

Just back from our river cruise, and I can report that the general level of 'dress' was extremely casual the entire trip!  One memorable guy wore a tee-shirt and shorts every day, and several others wore shorts to dinner. Jeans were commonplace at dinner. We ate mostly in the Aquavit, maybe that was more casual but regardless, there were tons of jeans and shorts on display at night. One or two folks clearly made an effort to dress up for the evening cocktails and dinner, but they were a small minority.

yes, that sounds similar to our Scenic river cruise experience.

We had warm evenings and perhaps 1/4 of men wore shorts at dinner and jeans were not at all unusual at dinners.

I dont think Scenic cafe is open at dinner, only breakfast and lunch (if it was, we never went there in the evening) and so dress code I am refering to is in main dining area.

Most people went dressier for the gala dinners and the evening off board concert - but by no means really formal. A minority of men wore ties at those times but most did not.

This is a good question and we just asked the question to our friend who just got home. He said he wore sweats and T-shirts the whole trip. I think that is "TOO" casual. So I am glad someone is answering the question more in depth. Looking forward to our first Viking next year.

We leave this Friday for Treasures of the Rhine and because of the time of the year - on the ship over Christmas - I hope that the dress is elevated from Sweats and t-shirts at dinner.  I will comment back after the cruise, or during...

I frankly don't care about breakfast and lunch, but I personally feel that dinner should be elevated somewhat...

well that's the thing - the river cruise companies state a dress code of casual - so that includes sweats, t-shirts, shorts at dinner.

I guess, because of the time of year, you are less likely to see shorts and more likely to see sweatshirts  - but all those things are within the stated dress code.

Of course you yourself don't have to dress that casual - but knowing that is the dress code, you cant expect all other people to not do so.

Agree and we get it.

I can stomach most all types of clothing and do for the most part, but that does not stop me from looking at some folks and ask myself silently if they looked in a mirror before leaving their cabin, and wonder how they thought what they were wearing was even remotely appropriate.

Haha

CDNPolar (tong in cheek) do remember that some may not have had the benefits of the upbringing that you have and alas some would not follow the norm as it is perceived by the majority.

but  tshirts , shorts and sweatshirts are appropriate - it is a casual dress code

You might feel that 'dinner should be elevated somewhat' and of course you can dress according to that  - but that isnt what the appropriate dress code requires.

When I say what I said, I am not talking about well fitting, clean, relatively new and in good condition t-shirts, shorts, and sweatshirts.  There should be some common sense used here.  I am talking about raggedy old ill fitting clothing that is for the back garden on a Saturday, not for a cruise ship dinner.  I have seen much of this that is inappropriate in my opinion.

This is the same challenge that Corporate North America has with casual Friday.  Some understand what the dress code means and some do not.

But that's not what you said  before.

You said "I hope that the dress is elevated from Sweats and t-shirts at dinner."

Nothing about raggedy etc

I was responding to your first comment - and regarding that comment - no, dress code isnt elevated from tshirts and sweatshirts at dinner. Nor can you expect it to be, since that is within the stated dress code.

I'm not a mind reader - if that is what you state, that is what  I read. I dont know you meant anything else.

This is all interpretation.

This is direct from Viking River website re Dress Code.

Yes, it says "casual" but for evening it specifically states "elegant casual" with suggestions.  No where does it state that sweat pants and t-shirts are part of "elegant casual".

During the day dress is casual but again it does not go into detail.  At night it states what is acceptable for elegant casual.

One of the problems and this has been discussed many times, is the ships do not enforce dress codes.

Can't speak for Viking but  certainly on our Scenic cruise many  people wore tshirts and shorts at dinner and almost nobody wore ties except a few men on the couple of gala nights.

The wording says "may include" - it isn't a mandatory thing.

When it was 30C on our cruise with Avalon, lots were wearing shorts. Mind you, they were still nicer ones and not short cut offs.  You also didn't notice until they stood up to leave (and our group was usually the ones who got the hint that they are cleaning up the dining room) if they had shorts or pants on.

On an ocean cruise and the dress is all over the place.  Some people dress like they are cleaning out their basement and others dress nicely.  Personally prefer a more well dressed approach to grunge.

I frequently do it too.

I often do this.(on any travel, not just cruising)

If you note any experienced walkers, runners athletes will not wear jeans not because of weight or heaviness of cloth, it’s the seams they are so thick the chafe most uncomfortable.

We rarely travel with jeans at all.  In fact, I don't remember the last time we took jeans with us on any trip. They are exactly that - heavy and not comfortable.

We have travel clothing that is durable enough for any excursion, and can also pass for elegant casual onboard.

This is an investment that we have made over time.
