Knowsley Safari

Knowsley Safari is an exciting day out for all animal-lovers – not just for kids. Who wouldn’t want to watch their car’s windscreen wipers being expertly deconstructed by some cheeky little baboons?

The safari drive is a real highlight of any visit. What’s more, entry to the park means you can go round as many times as you want.

The five-mile trip takes you past camels, white rhinos, ostriches, lions, yaks, deer, antelopes and baboons. Those who don’t want to risk the condition of their vehicle can take the car-friendly route. There is a baboon bus you can book on to for an extra six quid, so you can get up close to the animals without car calamities.

There’s plenty to see on foot too. The tiger trail, sea lions and mischievous meerkats are probably the biggest draws, but there are also birds of prey, giraffes and tapirs.

If the animals can’t hold your kid’s attention, there’s also a play area and a few amusements. There’s even a train if you can’t face walking all the way to the red river hogs. There are plenty of picnic tables dotted around should you wish to bring a packed lunch.

"Exploring the Wonders of Knowsley Safari Park: A Family-Friendly Adventure"

knowsley safari park without a car

As a family of five, days out can become expensive, so when I spotted Knowsley Safari Park had a special offer running we decided to take advantage. The offer of one child under 16 goes free for every full paying adult runs until 29th February.

We paid for our own tickets

We visited Knowsley Safari   on Tuesday, during school term so it wasn't busy.

For more great ideas, check us out on Facebook ,  Instagram

Did you know that most of my content is brought to you with no financial incentive? If you appreciate my posts, why not buy me a virtual coffee?

We booked online and kids under 16 go free with a paying adult (it's one child per adult) so yesterday's visit was only around £53 this was with a guide book which you can choose at the checkout.

I have to say I was really impressed with this Zoo. The animals look like they are all well looked after, the enclosures are absolutely huge and the place is spotless. However this was comparing it to a recent trip to an awful zoo that we had in January. Don't get me wrong there was a few issues with our visit to Knowsley which you can read about further down, but there's also lots of good.

We arrived around 10.30 to find only one kiosk was open which was causing a nightmare, after 10 minutes they opened up a second kiosk.

You follow the road round and you can either go straight onto the safari drive or you can park up and go on the foot safari, either way there are toilet options for both.

We headed round the safari drive first which took us around 40 mins, however this could have been longer if the Africa section was open. We were told that this would be open for 11.30 However we headed back for 1.30 and it was still closed! Other than the staff manning the lion section there was no staff to be seen to ask.

We also decided not to do the baboon drive because your car will get damaged and it's just a headache I don't want, we would have taken the bus if that had been running but it wasn't.

Baboons are very naughty so really think about it before you decide to go in, in your own vehicle because you will have damage to your car. Note I said WILL not Might.

The car friendly route takes in lots of lovely animals including various types of deer, bison, Iberian Wolves, lions, camels and lots more. The space they have is a lot and at times we went without seeing anything which I thought was a bit boring to be honest. However what we did see we really enjoyed especially the lions. Please make sure you read the rules and you stick to them. Do not get out of your car no matter what.

We then headed into the foot safari which was fantastic. It has so many things to read and hands on displays to get involved with. Lots of educational material and Elliot really enjoyed learning about the animals.

We did the tiger trail first which was great. Lots of info boards and the tigers came right up to us, one even tried to attack us so we walked away from it because we didn't want to wind it up and stress it out. Something must have been happening because they were pacing and were very angry. The enclosures are pretty big with lots of enrichment which was fantastic to see and we were fascinated watching one of the tigers scent mark and just generally having a wander exploring. They looked like they were in great condition and they are probably the best Tigers we have encountered in a zoo. The experience was definitely one we wont forget in a hurry

From here we just followed the path, you can't get lost as you have a map that you are given when you enter and there's plenty of signage about. There are info boards for every animal and you can also find some interactive and hands on activities dotted around the zoo to get involved in.

We also had food whilst we were here, which was reasonably priced and the staff were great, going above and beyond. We went for 3 Chicken Burgers which were huge and 2 Pulled pork ciabattas both with fries. The only thing that let it down were the drinks which were limited to tea, coffee or standard fizzy drinks. The portions were large ( I have seen people moan that portion sizes were small, but honestly they are not.)

On our visit the shop, amusement rides and the nature trail were closed for maintenance ready to open for half term but from what I could see the rides looked great. Again no mention of anything other than the amusement rides being closed which were on the website. I love getting a fridge magnet and other trinkets from the places we visit so I was a bit disappointed that the shop was closed.

Would we visit again? Yes we would visit again, we had a great day and can see how you can easily spend a full day here.

Knowsley Safari Park – A Safari Park In England

Are you visiting England and looking for something unusual to do? Want to get up close and personal with baboons? If you are interested in an exciting day out and seeing animals run wild, then Knowsley Safari Park near Liverpool is the perfect place. Here, we will share everything you need about this safari park in England.

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our  disclosure and privacy policy  for more information.

About Knowsley Safari Park

Knowsley Safari Park is exactly as the name implies – a safari park. However, it’s not your ordinary safari park. At Knowsley Safari Park, you can drive your vehicle through the park and get up close highly close to the wildlife. They are so close that some will mount your car if you choose to drive through the baboon encounter!

In England, this safari park is a part of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA). It’s a well-known attraction situated in Prescot, England. Knowsley Safari’s primary goal is to conserve different animal species and research them. Knowsley Safari also participates in preservation projects. The park is in northern England, close to Chester, Liverpool, and Manchester universities.

Knowsley Safari Park’s History

The founders are Jimmy Chipperfield and Edward Stanley. They opened the park in 1971.  The original drive was 3.5 miles through the park when it first opened.  Tourists can drive by lions, elephants, antelope, giraffes, and zebras. After a while, the park became popular among tourists, and because of this, the drive route was extended by 1.5 miles. Since 1973, additional animals have been added, and visitors can observe camels, rhinoceros, buffalo, and tigers. It’s now the longest safari drive in England.

As the park evolved, it added new attractions.  For example, there are two baboon sections – self-drive or the Baboon Bus .

Knowsley Safari Park Animals

Knowsley Safari aims to help people get closer to the animals.  There are approximately 500 animals within. One of the most popular is the baboons. They are so popular because they jump on your car if you ride through their enclosure in your vehicle.

And I can tell you from experience that they WILL damage your vehicle. I’ve been many times, and if you make it through the baboon enclosure only missing a windscreen wiper, you should consider yourself lucky. I have lost windscreen wipers, a side mirror, and an antenna!

Then there’s the fact that they might flash you, so if you have children be prepared to explain anatomy!

Flashing Baboons

Knowsley Safari Park Baboon

About The Baboons

These animals are considered to be in a group of the biggest primates. They have been living on the planet for about 2 million years already! Five species of baboons exist now:

The size of baboons varies by species. Generally, these primates live 30 years. Baboons are not endangered, but the anthropogenic impact might cause a population decline.

Self Drive The Baboon Enclosure

This, people, is where you will experience the baboons jumping on your car and will pull off a piece or two. If this concerns you, you can opt to take the Baboon Bus.

Baboon

Take The Baboon Bus

Many people want to lose a piece of their car, so Knowsley introduced the car-friendly route, the Baboon Bus.

If you take the bus, you don’t have a car or are worried about your vehicle becoming damaged. You can book a seat on the Baboon Bus for just £6.50 per person on top of the standard admission price.

Amur Tigers

Endangered tigers inhabit the eastern parts of Russia and can also be found in China. They have thick pale orange fur that is covered with dark stripes. Tigers roam long distances, hunting for food. However, the natural habitat of these animals suffers from agricultural expansion and logging. These factors cause population decline.

In Knowsley Safari Park, you will meet two Amur Tigers –  Sinda and Miron, who came to participate in the tiger breeding programs. A special drive with tigers was opened for tourists in 2018. The territory is equipped with small forests, streams, and ponds.

White Rhinos

The white rhino is the biggest of all rhinoceros. White rhinoceros possess a huge, strong bodies with a small neck. Their heads are big, and their natural habitat is savannah or grassland. Rhinos consume grass and drink water two times per day. These animals also like to rest in mud pits because it helps cool their bodies.

White Rhino

Knowsley Safari Park possesses the biggest white rhino group for breeding. It is considered to be the largest and the most successful in Europe . As you drive through the park, you get to observe them.

Almost extinct, with an estimated 140 left in the wild, this is a rare opportunity to see these antelopes. These antelopes are distinct because of their striking reddish-brown coat with black-and-white markings or white-yellow stripes.

These animals have two horns, spiraling slightly. The natural habitat is tropical jungles. Bongos like to consume roots, grass, and leaves. The greatest danger for them is deforestation and hunting, which have caused the population to decline to near extinction.

You can see bongos while driving by the sixth zone of the African Savannah route.

Other Animals

In addition to the baboons, tigers, and bongo, there are lions, emu camels, giraffes, elephants, meerkats,s and many other species.

Animal Experiences

If you’ve ever dreamed of getting close to a giraffe or wanting to feed a meerkat its breakfast, then the Animal Experiences are just the adventure you’re looking for!

Knowsley Safari Park offers a range of animal experiences, so you can find something on your bucket list . And you’ll get an up-close animal encounter that is the best animal experience around.

How To Get To Knowsley Safari Park

Knowsley Safari is in Prescot, not that far from Liverpool. There are various ways to get there:

It’s one of the most convenient ways to get to the park and the most fun! After all, if you arrive by car, you can drive through the baboon enclosure and the lion enclosure.

If you don’t have your own vehicle, it’s an excellent option to book a 9-seater car hire in Liverpool , especially when you bring friends! It takes only 14 minutes to drive there from John Lennon Airport. If you need to have your luggage with you, try a 9-seater minibus hire in Liverpool.

The route is quite simple. From A561 Speke Road, turn to Knowsley Expressway, and then lead to M57. When you get there, leave the road at the second junction. Look for the signs of Knowsley Safari, situated by the roundabout, and you will reach the park.

The road from the center of Prescot to Knowsley Safari Park takes 12-15 minutes. You can walk the footpath that will lead you straight to the main gates of the park.

Not wrecked, but if you enter the baboon enclosure, you will lose an antenna, potentially a mirror, or windscreen wipers. The baboons are notorious for ripping pieces of cars off.

It’s a five-mile safari drive that takes about an hour to drive. You are not limited to one drive; you can go around the park as often as you like.

Pets can not be brought to Knowsley Safari Park. The only exception is for Service Dogs.

The best time is around 10 am during the summer weekends when the schools are out. Or, go when the kids are in school!

Closing Thoughts

Knowsley Safari Park is one of the most unusual days out in England. Kids absolutely love it! Even though you might have to replace an element of your car, it’s worth it. There’s nothing quite like a baboon that’s showing off its lower regions while taunting you as it tears off the windscreen wiper.

The lions at the park are huge, and when you drive through their enclosure, they will come up to the cars, so keep your windows closed! Now you know that there is a  safari park in England, add it to your list of “must-dos.”

Fantastic, even without a car

We visited the safari park today and what a fantastic day even without a car. You pay £7.50 to get in and then £5 for a bus that takes you around the park with a tour guide telling you all about the animals. There is a fair ground with rides, there is also sea lion shows, parrot shows, and a outdoor park. My children loved it and the food was pretty cheap aswell. Great day out.

Our visit today started with a feeling that we have made a mistake to come on a bank holiday. There were long queues right from the safari entrance and it felt like this is going to be money wasted. But we didn't lose hope and kept going on a slow pace. Getting at lion's reserve it becomes a little excited. Most of the time lions are lazy but If they get active and come closer to the car then it's a sight not to miss. Monkeys are the real highlight from the day. We kept a couple of bananas on the dashboard that attracted plenty of monkeys to our car. They sat on bonnet and hanged from side mirrors doing their little fights and mischiefs. We spent a lot of time in the monkey area and it was fun. Emu and rhinos are good as they were very close. There are too many deers and cow like creatures which actually stay in herds, mostly at small distance from the car's path. That's basically it for safari drive. But there are plenty of other things which fills up your day like sea lion show, which is good. In the end we went for safari drive one more time and it was pretty quite this time. We spent another hour mainly with lions and monkeys. Lions were more active this time too.

had a great day getting up close and personal with the animals. Lions were fantastic never been that close to a big cat before, the baboons were so funny unfortunately we lost our rear windscreen wiper to a particularly tenacious young baboon but it was more than worth it. Bat forest is really worth a visit too

Visited over the easter weekend. We arrived at gate opening time. Good value, the children loved it. We arrived at 10 am and had completed the park by 2pm. Pros: 1) good on a rainy day / or with tired children as you drive round, 2) they have extended the walking zoo part with the meerkats, bat cave, you can see the birds of pray, walk to the elephants and through the giraffe house. 3) the sea lion show is good. 3)good coffee. Cons: 1) not enough information on the animals, 2) too many cars - it might be better if people got a time to enter, 3) although the sea lion show is good I don't think it's changed much over the years! 4) not a lot of toilets! Tips, get on the safari early, go to the loo before the drive. Be prepared for you car to be broke!!

After travelling 1 hour to get there, you get to the front gate and first thing you see is a hole load of nothing. Further in you see a lot of mundane, boring, cannon fodder animals to make it look full, even donkeys make an appearance. The queues for lion enclosure aint worth it. Most of the time I was looking for quickest route out. I was so sick of driving by this point I was rushing round most of the boring stuff to the monkeys which were the highlight. After you finish dont bother getting out of your car just drive home. The attractions at the end (if you can even call them that) are so insignificant I can't even be bothered writing something to say bad about them, JUST DON'T!! If you like deers, birds and massive queues then you're in for a treat.

Large parkland with partition enclosures for animals. There is a drive through system in place so beware of vehicle parts being dismantled. Small Seal show and good cafeteria.

The park started with humble beginnings, originally opening as a traditional zoo with a limited number of animal enclosures. However, Lord Derby had grand visions for the park and wanted to create a more immersive and interactive experience for visitors. Over the years, the park underwent significant expansions and renovations to transform it into the safari park it is today.

The park has also introduced a range of educational programs and initiatives to increase awareness about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species.

Knowsley Safari Park review

June 7, 2016 by Jenni

Knowsley safari park review

A couple of weeks ago we took Lucas to Knowsley Safari Park *. The safari park is an impressive 5 mile wild animal safari drive as well as a walk round park like you would expect of a zoo. It is currently home to over 750 fascinating animals.

Knowsley safari park

I really couldn’t have picked a worse day to go, it was pouring down to the point that we couldn’t see out of the windscreen driving there on the motorway. However, we didn’t let this dampen our spirits and were excited to see the animals up close.

Knowsley safari park

As you enter the drive, there are 3 paying kiosks to minimise the wait of entering. You follow the drive round and can either turn left to the car park to walk around or continue straight to go into the safari drive. There are also some toilets that you can park next to if you need to use them before going into the safari part. We went round the safari first, my favourite part of the drive is seeing the lions walking so close to the car in their enclosure and couldn’t wait to see Lucas’ reaction. Unfortunately, due to some changes in the lion group they weren’t in their normal enclosure as they needed to be monitored closely. We still saw them but it wasn’t the same experience as I have previously had, I will check before we go next whether they have been reintroduced.

Knowsley safari park

Due to the rain a lot of the animals were hiding, the deer were out in full force, nothing put them off! When we did spot the animals though, it was amazing, seeing them mixing together in a natural type habitat without any bars. We spotted a couple of Zebra, Rhinos with babies, Buffalo, Tigers and Camels. We didn’t go into the monkey enclosure as we were booked onto the Baboon Bus at 12. The safari drive took us about 40 minutes but would have taken longer if it wasn’t for the rain and if the lions had been out.

Knowsley safari park

The weather cheered up and we parked up and had a bit of our picnic before getting on the Baboon Bus. The bus takes you around the full safari, not just through the monkey enclosure. The bus driver introduced himself and said he wasn’t a tour guide but would tell us anything he could. Turns out he knew pretty much everything there was to know, he was very knowledgeable and friendly throughout the journey, pointing out the animals and telling us about them.

Knowsley safari park

Once we drove into the monkey enclosure they were jumping all over the bus, swinging from rope that hung from the bus. Lucas found it highly amusing, touching the window where the monkeys were. We spent about 20 minutes in the monkey enclosure and probably just under an hour and half on the bus.

Knowsley safari park

Once the bus pulled back into the park we had a walk around looking at the other animals. There are some more lions in the park, we also saw sea lions, tortoises, meerkats, birds of prey, elephants and my favourites, the giraffes. There is a bat cave but we decided not to venture in their until Lucas is a little older. There are also fairground rides and a train that you can go on, we will definitely go on the train next time we visit.

Knowsley safari park

We had a fab day out and even with the rain at the beginning it didn’t spoil it. There is plenty to see and do whatever the weather x

I love visiting zoos with my two small children, have never ventured into a safari park yet though but have heard great things about Knowsley Safari Park. It looks like a great day out. The Baboon Bus, though! OMG haha. Have you seen the On The Buses holiday film where they’re driving in the safari park and there’s chimps getting on and driving it and a lion prowling in at the back?! I’d be too scared of this happening (even though I know it couldn’t!) I’d be papping myself lol!

I love animals… I really do there is a safari park quite near where I stay in Scotland and it’s superb. I don’t fully agree Org the animals being locked up but I know they are treated well and they are happy. It’s a a amazing experience for kids to. Just shame about the weather but glad you didn’t let it dampen your day. Thank you for sharing xx

Real life Paddington Bear arrives at Knowsley Safari this Easter

Visitors can see Andean bears Bahai and Chui on the Foot Safari from Good Friday.

Knowsley Safari is gearing up for an adventure-packed Easter as it prepares to open the doors to ‘Bear Country’ on the Foot Safari experience, where visitors can meet the newest residents Bahia and Chui.

The male and female are Andean bears - the species that inspired the children’s literature character Paddington Bear. They are also known as the Spectacled Bear due to their distinctive facial markings. The Andes mountains extend through seven South American countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Peru, where Paddington comes from.

Families can come and see the bears from Good Friday, March 29. But there’s more to this event than just a fun day out; Bahai and Chui’s arrival marks the beginning of a vital campaign aimed to protect the species.

Knowsley Safari Park’s campaign, in conjunction with the Peru-based Spectacled Bear Conservation Society, will officially kick off on World Bear Day, March 23, as they aim to raise awareness and support towards the species that are currently facing the threat of extinction and classified as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.

Visitors to ‘Bear Country’ will be able to see the striking differences between Bahia and Chui, as weighing in at 140kg, male Chui towers over the 69kg female Bahai. The bears, who relocated recently from Jersey Zoo after a decade-long stay, are settling into their new home at Safari securely.

Lucy Petrie, carnivore animal manager at Knowsley , said : “We’re really pleased with how quickly Bahia and Chui have settled in at Knowsley and we’re looking forward to educating visitors about these very special bears.

“During the Easter holidays, we’ll be offering interactive experiences including talks, touch tables and activities to educate and inspire everyone who visits. Guests will be able to observe Bahia and Chui while learning about the conservation methods we’re using to help protect their relatives in the wild."

Petrie added: “It’s an action-packed bear-themed family day out at Knowsley Safari this Easter as guests will also be able to take part in an Easter-themed Bear Hunt, including puzzles, photo opportunities and prizes – all included in the main admission price.”
