Travel Guide To Jamaica

A bar on Winnifred beach Port Antonio

For such a small island, Jamaica has had a massive influence on the world. This legendary nation, which gained its independence in 1962, evokes passion and affection even in those who have never visited, and brings a dreamy look to the faces of those who have. It has produced the most celebrated reggae star in history, Bob Marley, and some of the greatest sportsmen in the world, including Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake. It has inspired writers, artists and filmmakers. The very name conjures up images of an idyllic life, a laid-back place of Caribbean beaches and rum shacks; and indeed, Jamaica has all that and more.

How to get to Jamaica

AIRPORT The main airport for tourist arrivals is Sangster Airport in Montego Bay. Norman Manley Airport is situated just outside Kingston. AIRLINES FROM THE UK Air Jamaica (020 8570 7999) flies from London Heathrow to Kingston five times a week and to Montego Bay four times a week. British Airways (0845 779 9977; www.british-airways.com ) flies from London Gatwick via Miami or New York four times a week to the same destinations.

Tour operator details for Jamaica

Abercrombie and Kent (020 7730 9600; fax: 7730 9376); Caribbean Connection (01244 355 300; fax: 355 309); Caribbean Escapes (020 7581 3517; fax: 7589 1468); Caribbean Expressions (020 7431 2131; fax: 7431 4221); Carrier (0161 491 7620; www.carrier.co.uk ); Elegant Resorts (01244 897 999; fax: 897 750); International Chapters (020 7722 9560; fax: 7722 9140); Kuoni (01306 742 222; fax: 742 888); or Villa Connections (01625 858158; fax: 858258).

Where to stay in Jamaica

STRAWBERRY HILL Irish Town (00 1 876 944 8400; fax: 944 8408). The hotel is an hour's drive up the Blue Mountains from Kingston's Norman Manley Airport. Either the hotel's shuttle bus can collect you or they can arrange a 10-minute helicopter ride there. Although you are some distance from the sea - Hellshire, Kingston's favourite beach, is a 75-minute drive away - 'Strawberry' now has a mountain stream-cool swimming pool and a new Aveda Concept Spa. Thanks to James Palmer, once a chef on Adnan Khashoggi's yacht, the 'New Jamaican' cuisine has also become one of the island's attractions: try the plantain-encrusted snapper. Rooms and villas available. £££ TRIDENT VILLAS AND HOTEL Anchovy, Port Antonio (00 1 876 993 2602; fax: 993 2590; [email protected] ). The quiet repose of this hotel is disturbed only by the shriek of peacocks, the soft thwack of croquet mallets on balls and very occasionally, a splash from the circular pool, an alternative to the small but pleasant beach. There are 28 rooms, including an Imperial Suite and the eight roomed Trident Villa. Meals (very slightly limited menu) are taken on the terrace, or in the very formal, wood-panelled dining room which, at night, can seem like a stiflingly hot Scottish lodge. ££ GOLDENEYE Orcabessa (00 1 876 975 3354; [email protected]). Goldeneye began life as a spartan bungalow on a clifftop, where Ian Fleming created James Bond. A few years ago this was transformed into the luxurious five-bedroom Fleming Villa, which has been rented by Dennis Hopper and Francis Ford Coppola, among others; you can stay in the room where his original writing desk remains. In addition there are 11 wooden cottages, lovely and light and airy, and overlooking a lagoon; as well as a main restaurant, a lounge-library, and a beachside pool and lively beach bar where Island Records play night and day. £££££ JAMAICA INN Ocho Rios (00 1 876 974 2514). Cottage accommodation. There's a sea-island air of leisure about this place that can slide into a pleasant sopor following one of the restaurant's famously sumptuous dinners. Almost everyone staying at Jamaica Inn is of, or over, a certain age. £££ ROUND HILL HOTEL AND VILLAS Montego Bay (00 1 876 956 7050; email [email protected] ). The original Jamaican resort for the rich and famous. ££ THE CAVES Lighthouse Road, West End, Negril (00 1 876 957 0270; email: [email protected] ). Located at the far end of the Negril cliffs. A stay here can be breathtaking - especially if you leap into the sea from one of the 'jumps' scattered around the property (it takes longer to hit the water than expected). Views of the legendary Negril sunset from the upstairs bedroom in the two-storey cottage are worth making a booking for. Rent the entire 12-bedroom property or a one-bedroom cottage. The resort's renowned white sand Seven Mile Beach is some distance away. Also has an Aveda spa. £££ JAKE'S Calabash Bay, Treasure Beach (00 1 876 965 0635; fax: 965 0552; email: [email protected] ). Situated on the south coast, Jake's is owned by Sally and Jason Henzell, wife and son of Perry, director of the film The Harder They Come . At this quintessentially funky property, dolphins can sometimes be spotted in the relatively rough sea - and, thanks to the rustling grassland all around, this hottest part of the island is reminiscent of the African Savannah. £ HALF MOON Rose Hall, Montego Bay (00 1 876 953 2615; fax: 935 2731; email: [email protected] ). Half Moon was clearly designed as a flatlands version of Round Hill. The golf carts that whiz guests around the substantial grounds give the hotel something of the flavour of Portmeirion. Many of the villas have private pools and the hotel has its own golf course. £££

Where to eat out in Jamaica

DEVON HOUSE In Kingston, stop at Devon House (00 1 876 929 7046), the former governor's residence on Hope Road. Has a pleasingly elegant restaurant where you can eat well for about US$35 a head without wine. £ REDBONES THE BLUES CAFE Politicians and industry shakers also dine at the high-end Redbones The Blues Café (00 1 876 978 6091) on Braemar Avenue, Kingston, which is recognisable by the late-model Mercedes parked outside. £ BLUE MOUNTAIN INN The Blue Mountain Inn (00 1 876 927 2606), which is about three miles out of Kingston on Gordon Town Main Road, the road up to Strawberry Hill, has beautiful gardens. ££ CABIN ON THE SEA In Port Royal, the Cabin On The Sea seafood restaurant (00 1 876 967 8051), with tables set on a jetty over the sea, is exciting in an extremely leisurely sort of way. £££ ROCK HOUSE RESTAURANT In Negril, eat local food in style here on West End Road (00 1 876 957 4373). £ TOSCANINI At the Harmony Hall arts and crafts centre, on the road from Oracabessa to Ocho Rios (00 1 9876975 4785) (see What To See).

Things to do in Jamaica

GO RAFTING Rafting on the Rio Grande is a fantastic way to spend a day: you are driven high up the Blue Mountains to join the river and spend the next five or six hours travelling downstream on a banana raft, stopping to eat and swim in the clear river water. Trips (each lasts three-and-a-half hours) can be organised from the Port Antonio tourist office on Harbour Street (00 1 876 993 3051). There are cheaper freelance operators - but you may have to set off and depart the river at unorthodox points. GO EXPLORING Cycling in the hills is increasingly popular, or you can take the 90-minute drive from Ocho Rios into the interior to Nine Miles, the birth and burial place of Bob Marley. From Montego Bay, take a drive of similar length to Accompong, the eyrie-like capital of the Maroons (the escaped slaves turned fearsome guerrilla fighters who gained some measure of autonomy with the peace treaty of 1739). If you tire of the charms of Negril's Seven Mile Beach, there is horse riding, yoga and mushroom tea. While at Jake's (See Where to Stay), take the 50-minute drive back to Black River, with its crocodile-infested river. Or check out the breathtaking, unspoilt terrain of Bluefields, 90 minutes from both Treasure Beach and Negril, in whose bay pirate fleets would assemble. SEE THE WATERFALLS Waterfalls are popular attractions on the north coast: the tourist-thronged Dunn's River Falls at Ocho Rios, the more agreeable Reach Falls past Manchioneal to the east of Port Antonio, and Somerset Falls to its west, near Hope Bay. GO TO THE BEACH Round Hill, Jamaica Inn and Goldeneye all have superb beaches. Frenchman's Cove, four miles past the Trident, is one of the finest beaches in the world, on a cove into which the freshwater streams also run, overhung with tropical foliage. Winnifred Beach, a couple of miles on at Boston Bay, is also exceptional. When clean, the Norwich Beach, to the west of Port Antonio, is one of the unsung gems of the Caribbean. The legendary Seven Mile Beach at Negril is best sampled past the town's strip of hotels, which encourages excessive hustling, something you may also come across at Hellshire, near Kingston - although this is compensated for by the sheer gusto with which the Jamaican capital city enjoys itself at the seashore, particularly on Sundays.

Recent guests said there was no single standout aspect of the all-inclusive Moon Palace Jamaica. Everything from the friendly staff to the well-maintained grounds to the quality of the beds in the guest rooms are worth highlighting. Activities also leave little to be desired. Along with its central location in Ocho Rios, Jamaica , Moon Palace Jamaica can organize a dolphin swim, a sunset cruise, a snorkeling excursion and tours to can't-miss sights. Back at the resort, guests can unwind on the property's spotless (albeit small) beach, lounge around four pools or pamper themselves at the Awe Spa or the on-site beauty salon. Kids aren't left out, either: The Playroom offers games and supervised activities, and at the property's FlowRider, children can try riding waves on a bodyboard or surfboard. Meanwhile, adults have access to a swim-up bar and a nightclub. To satisfy their appetites, visitors can head to one of five dining venues, including an open-air restaurant by the beach and a Pan-Asian eatery with a sushi chef and hibachi tables, plus grab-and-go options. When it's time to wind down, each of the property's 705 accommodations features a stocked minibar, a smart TV, free Wi-Fi access, a liquor dispenser and a complimentary bottle of red wine upon arrival. Although recent guests praised the resort's amenities and excursions, some bemoaned the hotel's pushy sales tactics at check-in.

After undergoing a full renovation, this family-friendly property reopened in 2015 as a high-end luxury resort with majestic marble interiors. The sleek beach-house-inspired rooms have balconies with water views, and include iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, liquor dispensers, and welcome wine.

Floors of gleaming marble and a wall of Apple Macs at reception are not what you might expect in Jamaica. But the contemporary design gives this beach hotel a cosmopolitan vibe, and the food follows suit. It's not just a selection of buffets. Instead you can work your way around the five restaurants and six bars, trying seared rib eye at the steakhouse, risotto at Gondola, California rolls at the sushi bar, teppanyaki action at Momo and grilled seafood at Pier 8.

The 25 Best Resort Hotels in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas in 2022

The best resorts in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas, according to Travel + Leisure readers, put the region's dazzling scenery front and center.

travel and leisure jamaica

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite resorts in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas .

Ask the average person what the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas call to mind, and you'll get a familiar formula each time: Glassy waters that wow in shades of turquoise. Tropical palms swaying over talcum beaches. Poolside piña coladas. And, of course, dreamy resorts that ensure all of the above is never far from reach. But in a destination where beautiful views are par for the course, how does a hotel set itself apart?

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

Though they share common elements, the islands that comprise the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas are culturally diverse destinations that all offer something unique. And much like their vast and varied locales, the region's hotels, too, have their own set of features that make them individually special.

Secret Bay, for example, is a rain-forest resort with luxe clifftop villas, each with a private plunge pool, dedicated chef, and on-call concierge — attributes that helped it snag the top spot in this year's list. St. Lucia's Jade Mountain — described by one guest as "simply spectacular" — landed at No. 2, thanks to its stellar Piton views and three-walled suites. Jamaica also had a strong showing with six resorts in the rankings, including first-time WBA Hall of Famer Jamaica Inn (No. 10); Negril's Tensing Pen (No. 8), an intimate boutique hotel with thatched-roof cottages ideal for unplugging; and Round Hill Hotel and Villas (No. 15), a family-friendly property in Montego Bay with a private beach.

Read on for the full list of top resort hotels in the Caribbean.

1. Secret Bay, Portsmouth, Dominica

Score: 96.97

Book on Tripadvisor

Set on a lush hillside in rugged Dominica, this all-villa hotel prioritizes privacy. In fact, the Caribbean country calls itself "the nature island," and Secret Bay puts that nickname on full display with its 10 tree-house-style villas made of sustainably sourced wood. Of course, this eco-sensibility is coupled with luxe amenities, including individual terraces offering sea, rain forest, and mountain views; private plunge pools; outdoor rain showers; a gourmet kitchen for guests and their private chefs; and a dedicated butler. There's also a secret beach accessible only by paddle, kayak, or swim, and activities like night snorkeling and yoga. In short, "the resort is truly untouched," as one T+L reader said. "Beauty, defined."

2. Jade Mountain, Soufrière, St. Lucia

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Score: 96.63

Built into a mountain and pointed toward St. Lucia's majestic Pitons, Jade Mountain takes advantage of its position with open-air suites, called "sanctuaries," overlooking the sea and iconic peaks. In addition to the "amazing views," guests rave about the food, friendly staff, activities (both on land and water), and next-level private infinity pools. The sum total, according to one T+L reader, is "a magical trip of a lifetime."

3. Palm Island Resort, Palm Island, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Score: 96.50

Palm Island isn't your average all-inclusive. With only 43 rooms, the 135-acre resort occupies a private island at the tip of the Grenadines. Guests who make the trek — via two planes and a boat — will be rewarded with a one-stop shop for all their Caribbean cravings: five velvety beaches, numerous hiking and biking trails, and an endless expanse of aquamarine sea for snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, and more.

4. Curtain Bluff, St. John's, Antigua

Score: 96.44

Straddling two beaches — the calm Caribbean Sea on one side, the wild Atlantic on the other — Antigua's Curtain Bluff doesn't ever let you forget where you are, with 72 beachfront rooms and suites overlooking the water. Beyond its envious setting, though, there are plenty of welcome distractions, including delicious restaurants and water sports like scuba diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding, waterskiing, and sailing. No wonder it's a hit with honeymooners.

5. The Shore Club, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Score: 96.22

There are no bad views at the Shore Club, located on a secluded swath of sand on Long Bay Beach, away from the throngs on Grace Bay. The rooms, according to one T+L reader, are "beyond gorgeous," with a "very European style," and the amenities are equally a draw. Between the sumptuous spa, kids' club, photogenic pools, four restaurants (including a Japanese-Peruvian fusion spot), and free water sports (snorkels, kayaks, paddleboards, Hobie cats), it's the "perfect setting for romance or a family vacation," concluded the reader.

6. The Palms Turks and Caicos, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Score: 95.86

The 72-suite Palms Turks and Caicos tumbles out onto the sugar-white sands and turquoise waters of Grace Bay, one of the Caribbean's most beautiful beaches, but that's just one perk of many. There's also a large infinity pool, dedicated kids' club, highly regarded spa, and alfresco dinners at the popular Parallel23 restaurant, all of which helped it land in the No. 6 spot.

7. Cap Maison Resort & Spa, Gros Islet, St. Lucia

Score: 95.58

Described by T+L readers as an "extraordinary paradise," Cap Maison is a hacienda-inspired resort where almost all the rooms have stellar sea views, and the villas come with private pools. Guests also praised the property for its "sparkling pools" (one facing the sea), food ("great selections, local fresh ingredients"), delightful spa, and superb service that goes "beyond expectations." All things that make this the "best resort in the Caribbean, by far," one respondent gushed.

8. Tensing Pen, Negril, Jamaica

Score: 95.53

Perched on Negril's West End cliffs, Tensing Pen is an intimate, romantic boutique hotel where travelers come to unplug. The thatched-roof cottages lack TVs and phones, but with a peaceful spa and yoga pavilion, activities like snorkeling and cliff-jumping, and "breathtaking views, between the sunsets, dolphins, and jumping from the bridge," as one T+L reader put it, you'll hardly notice this absence.

9. Anse Chastanet, Soufrière, St. Lucia

Score: 95.47

Much like its sister property, Jade Mountain, Anse Chastanet lets the views do the talking. Set on a hillside amid 600 manicured acres, this resort shelters 49 rooms, some with an open fourth wall to flaunt striking views of the sea and the Pitons. Always camera-ready, Anse Chastanet has two picturesque beaches; several open-air restaurants that source fresh, local ingredients; and excellent snorkeling along the offshore reef.

10. Jamaica Inn, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Score: 95.41

A romantic boutique that once hosted the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Katharine Hepburn, Jamaica Inn is all about "Old World glamour," per one T+L reader. Opened in 1950, the property today is still favored for its understated luxury, which includes a waterfront spa, a private stretch of champagne-colored sand, charming cottages with private plunge pools, and above all, service that one guest said will "make you feel special."

11. Kamalame Cay, Bahamas

Score: 95.27

Kamalame Cay, a family-run resort on a private, 96-acre island, is not easy to reach — "it takes a page out of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles to get there," said one T+L reader — but the payoff is that much sweeter. Like Robinson Crusoe, only better, guests can relax on the deck of their beachfront villas, get breakfast delivered daily in a wicker basket, take a golf cart or bike to explore the grounds, snorkel the nearby reef, and be pampered with a massage at the overwater spa.

12. Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa, St. Bart's

Score: 95.08

This 46-room hotel specializes in the type of luxuries that can make a Caribbean vacation feel above-and-beyond indulgent: chic and spacious guest rooms (some with private plunge pools), soothing spa treatments starring La Mer products, a delicious seaside restaurant, and the crown jewel: an Instagrammable infinity pool overlooking the spectacular Grand Cul-de-Sac beach.

13. Four Seasons Resort & Residences Anguilla, Barnes Bay, Anguilla

Score: 95.01

Occupying a coveted spot on a pristine beach, this Four Seasons Resort is one of the more family-friendly properties on Anguilla, with four- to five-bedroom villas and kids' and teens' programs (uncommon in these parts). Still, it's luxe enough to satisfy refined palates and discerning design eyes, thanks to its ocean-facing restaurants, alfresco spa massages, Kelly Wearstler interiors, and three pools, including an infinity-edge, adults-only option that's ideal for sunset swims. As one T+L reader put it, "you are paying for perfection."

14. Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotel, Maundays Bay, Anguilla

Score: 94.97

Perfect for honeymoons or any romantic vacation à deux, Cap Juluca is a stunner with Greco-Moorish architecture, plush villas and suites, gorgeous swimming pools, and superb service ("staff exude the true meaning of the word hospitality," said one guest). But it's Maundays Bay — a calm, crescent-shaped beach with smooth sand and brilliant blue waters — that gets consistent praise as one of the best beaches in not only Anguilla, but the entire Caribbean. For one guest, "the beach is second to none."

15. Round Hill Hotel & Villas, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Score: 94.81

Despite its mega star appeal — Round Hill, set on 110 acres by the sea, counts household names like Alfred Hitchcock and Jackie Kennedy as previous guests — this resort makes you feel at home while spending the night in a gorgeous villa. "Visiting Round Hill is like coming home to your special family," one guest said. "A warm heart and a big Jamaican smile await." In addition to the staff, described as "the best of the best," the property has a private beach, an open-air spa, beach barbecues, an infinity pool, and cool Ralph Lauren–designed interiors. "Everything about Round Hill will have you coming back again and again."

16. Beach Enclave Turks & Caicos, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Score: 94.75

Thoughts of a Caribbean getaway likely evoke images of powder-like sand, cerulean waters, and around-the-clock pampering from butlers and chefs, which makes Beach Enclave, and its collection of private villas and secluded location, an ideal hideaway.

17. (tie) Jumby Bay Island, Oetker Collection, Antigua

Score: 94.55

Reachable only by boat, this 300-acre private island is one of the region's dreamiest all-inclusive resorts, with residential-style cottages and villas, several beaches and pools, a tranquil spa, and some activities (waterskiing, sailing, and the like) included in the rate — and not a single car in sight.

17. (tie) Skylark Negril Beach Resort, Negril, Jamaica

"Skylark" is Jamaican slang for "laze about" — and that's precisely what this hip property on Negril's sought-after Seven Mile Beach wants its guests to do. Helping accomplish that mission is a beachfront with loungers, a restaurant serving delicious Jamaican fare, a delightful spa, and colorful rooms with balconies.

19. Rockhouse, Negril, Jamaica

Score: 94.46

Set snugly into the stunning cliffside in Negril's West End, this laid-back haven is Instagram gold. It was originally opened in the 1970s, attracting musicians like Bob Marley and Bob Dylan, and these days, it continues to lure visitors with its ocean-view infinity pool, superb snorkeling, back-to-nature thatched-roof villas, and an enviable setting among lush gardens.

20. Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, Aruba

Score: 94.32

"You can't beat the location on Eagle Beach," said one T+L reader of Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort. In fact, the main pastime at this low-key, adults-only escape is relaxing on the sand or by the beachfront pool, though weekly movie nights on the beach entice plenty of guests to change positions; same goes for the live music at the bar.

21. Galley Bay Resort & Spa, St. John's, Antigua

Score: 94.27

Antigua is known as the Land of Sea and Sun, and Galley Bay helps the destination live up to its name: situated on 56 acres with a lagoon and bird sanctuary, this charming adults-only all-inclusive takes up prime real estate on a beautiful white-sand beach. Choose between a room on the sand or tucked among tropical gardens with a private plunge pool.

22. Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Score: 94.24

An adults-only all-inclusive, the Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana has everything you could want in a tropical vacation: beachfront infinity pools with swim-up bars, a water park with a lazy river and slides, a sprawling spa, swim-up suites, and dedicated beach butlers to keep your cocktails steadily flowing.

23. Frangipani Beach Resort, Meads Bay, Anguilla

Score: 94.22

Sitting along Meads Bay, one of Anguilla's most beautiful beaches, the family-run Frangipani provides ample idyllic backdrops. Though the experience is intimate, with just 19 rooms and suites plus a four-bedroom villa, there's plenty to do, from kayaking, sailing, and stand-up paddleboarding to biking, tennis, blissful spa treatments, and weekly cocktail parties. It's "an unbeatable combination of boutique personalization and luxury touches," one T+L reader said.

24. Le Toiny St. Barth, Anse de Toiny, St. Bart's

Score: 94.00

While the promise of a pristine, nearly empty beach is enough to tempt visitors to Le Toiny, a luxury hotel braced against a hillside above the sea, there are plenty of reasons to stay (and return), starting with the 22 suites, each with their own terrace, private heated pool, and panoramic ocean views. A gourmet restaurant, buzzy beach club, and serene spa also await.

25. Half Moon, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Score: 93.79

First developed in 1954, Half Moon has been drawing an elite crowd for decades — perhaps most notably, Queen Elizabeth II. But even with this cachet, the resort remains unpretentious. The vibes are easygoing here — a guests's biggest effort will be deciding between the 18-hole golf course or swimming pools, water-skiing or wakeboarding, and the spa or horseback rides on the beach.

Jamaica welcomes one million visitors in first two months of 2024

MINISTER OF Tourism Edmund Bartlett has announced that Jamaica has welcomed one million visitors and earned US$1 billion in foreign exchange in the first two months of the year. The numbers highlight the impressive growth trajectory of the country’s tourism sector.

The announcement was made during a Caribbean Hotel and Tourist Association (CHTA) Caribbean Travel Marketplace press conference, held last week at the Jamaica Tourist Board office in Kingston.

Speaking at the press conference, Bartlett said, “I am particularly proud of the level of growth we have had post-COVID. Normally 2019 was used as our benchmark for growth, but 2023 is now that new benchmark as we broke two important barriers – welcoming four million visitors and earning $US4.2 billion.

“Against all odds, Jamaica has broken another barrier by welcoming one million visitors and earning one billion (dollars) in foreign exchange the first two months. This is unprecedented in the country’s tourism history,” said Bartlett.

Jamaica recorded 611,642 stopover arrivals, which represents a 7.4 per cent increase and 389,319 cruise visitors, which is a 29.7 per cent increase. Total arrivals reflect 1,000,961, an increase of 15.1 per cent. From these arrival figures the island has earned US$1 billion, which is an impressive increase of 8.5 per cent.

Headlines Delivered to Your Inbox

“We continue to work with our tourism partners across the globe to ensure that our tourism offerings remain top of the line. Jamaica provides unique and authentic experiences that keeps visitors coming back,” said Donovan White, director of tourism.

Jamaica will also host the 42nd staging of the most prestigious travel show in the region, Caribbean Travel Marketplace, from May 20-22 at the Montego Bay Convention Centre. The event is expected to attract 150 buyer companies and approximately 1,000 delegates.

Trudeau's Jamaica vacation cost far more than same trip the year before

Rcmp reports an 'incident' happened at the place trudeau was staying during his holiday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's controversial vacation to Jamaica last Christmas cost Canadian taxpayers far more than his trip to the same destination a year earlier, CBC News has learned.

According to the government's answer to questions posed by Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer, tabled this week, Trudeau's 10-day vacation with his family to Prospect Estate near Ocho Rios cost taxpayers $230,442, a 42 per cent increase over the $162,000 cost of a similar trip over the Christmas holidays in 2022-23.

Trudeau's most expensive vacation to date as prime minister was a visit to the Aga Khan on a private island in the Bahamas, which ended up costing taxpayers $271,000 and resulted in a ruling that he had violated the ethics rules that govern members of Parliament.

  • Trudeau family vacationed with wealthy friends who donated to Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation
  • Prime minister's plane breaks down in Jamaica during family holiday
  • Conservatives call for ethics probe into Justin Trudeau's free Jamaican holiday stay

Trudeau's office initially said that he paid for his family's accommodations during the trip to Jamaica, a stay that some have estimated to be worth as much as $84,000. His office later corrected that to say Trudeau stayed for free at the resort owned by longtime family friend Peter Green.

Trudeau has defended his trip to Jamaica, saying that — like other Canadian families — his family took a vacation over the holidays and stayed with friends, and that all of the rules were followed.

Ethics Commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein said Trudeau's office consulted his office before he went to Jamaica. He said the rules that govern the gifts and travel MPs can accept make an exception for gifts and travel offered by friends or family.

"What we have here is clearly a generous gift between people who are friends and I don't see why, just because they are well off, they can't exchange gifts," von Finckenstein told members of the House of Commons ethics committee in January during a hearing on the trip.

According to the documents tabled in the House, the largest single expense for this year's trip to Jamaica was for the RCMP officers who accompanied the Trudeau family.

While the RCMP reported the trip cost the police service $162,051, not including the regular salaries of its officers, it declined to provide a breakdown or say whether its officers paid to stay at the resort owned by the Trudeau family friend.

This year's Jamaica trip also made headlines because the Canadian Armed Forces plane that brought him to the Caribbean island experienced a mechanical problem which forced the CAF to send a second plane to Jamaica with a crew to fix it.

Like all prime ministers, Trudeau is required for security reasons to fly in government planes and reimburses the government for the cost of commercial airfare when travelling for personal reasons.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's plane is seen on the tarmac after being grounded due to a technical issue following the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023.

The documents tabled in the House report that the second plane accounted for $20,835 of the $57,553 the trip cost the armed forces.

They also report that the mechanical problem the plane encountered was a malfunctioning Integrated Standby Instrument (ISI), "which is used as an alternative source for flight and navigation data."

Retired lieutenant-colonel Dean Black said the part would have needed replacing before the plane could return safely to Canada.

"An integrated standby instrument (ISI) provides standby altitude, altitude and airspeed information to the flight crew, these being critical data components to the safe operation of an aircraft," said the longtime pilot.

Another mechanical flaw caused the C-150 Polaris ferrying Trudeau to and from the G20 Summit to be grounded in New Delhi, India in September 2023.

The third government department to incur costs related to the trip was the Privy Council Office (PCO), which provides an employee charged with ensuring the prime minister has access to secure communications. The PCO reported that its employee's 15-day stay in Jamaica cost $10,838, including $2,681 to stay at an AirBnB.

Documents obtained from the RCMP under access to information law also report that there was an incident during Trudeau's stay in Jamaica.

RCMP report 'incident' during Trudeau's stay

While the documents are heavily redacted, officers reported on Dec. 29 that an individual showed up at the Frankfort villa where the Trudeaus were staying, wanting to speak with the prime minister.

"Update on (redacted). The individual who wanted to meet (redacted) returned but this time to (redacted)," an officer wrote in an e-mail. "PPO spoke to him advising he was not to return. (redacted) agreed.

"The pics and vehicle info was shared with our partners for their situational awareness."

The e-mail chain, under the subject line "Comments on X (Twitter) re: location," said the individual left a business card with the manager.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Kim Chamberland confirmed that the incident took place but said Trudeau was not in danger.

"The RCMP spoke to the individual, who left without incident," she said. "There was no need to engage local authorities. For privacy and security reasons, we cannot speak further on details regarding the individual, nor what prompted the incident. However, we can reassure you that at no time was the prime minister's security jeopardized during that incident."
