What is the line?  Silversea

Name of ship?  Silver Dawn

Passenger occupancy? 596

Itinerary? Roundtrip Lisbon

Few ships shimmer brighter than Silver Dawn, with its  you’ve arrived vibe, white gloved-butler pampering, and a novel spa concept celebrating indulgence both within the spa walls and in-suite.

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Silversea lures diehard devotees for its all-inclusive luxury cruises. Among the draws, all-suite accommodations, a sophisticated design reflecting its Italian heritage, tux-clad butlers for all passengers, complimentary alcohol and fine caviar, and diversified stylish restaurants. Silversea offers six ultra-luxury ocean liners (with its seventh, new-class Silver Nova, debuting August 2023), four polar expedition ships, and Origin, a Galápagos-dedicated small expedition vessel. Passengers are primarily 55+, although expeditions can skew younger. With itineraries traversing all seven continents, Silversea draws well-heeled, well-traveled passengers, primarily from the United States, with a notable amount from the UK and Europe.

Tell us about the ship in general

Launched in April 2022, the 596-passenger Silver Dawn envelopes passengers in luxury and beauty. The swank line’s latest and greatest new innovation, Otium spa, debuted on this ship. Wherever I went, I saw passengers sipping cocktails and champagne, nibbling caviar, schmoozing by the pool -  generally acting, well, joyous. Here’s one reason: The attentive crew find ways to make you happier than you thought you already were. I was only half-joking about chaining myself to the bed at departure time.

Who is onboard?

As a traveler who spends much time in the UK and Europe, I really enjoy meeting passengers and making friends with those living outside the United States. That’s a big Silversea advantage. Sailing Silver Dawn felt so worldly. On my cruise, I met a bunch of Brits and practiced French. Well-off passengers, mostly over 55-years-old and traveling as couples or a friends group, were friendly and open to conversations in lounges or the whirlpool. No one overdressed, sticking to casually elegant looks except when the dress code required more formal attire. Solo cruisers could meet up nightly for hosted cocktails. I often saw several eating dinner together.

  Describe the cabins

I unpacked in one of 34 Silver Suites, a one-bedroom with a long entry foyer, living room, dining area and sizable veranda. It felt like a smart European apartment, decorated in neutral hues with pops of orange and blue. All suites are equally gorgeous, really different size variations on one elegant residential-inspired theme with stunning marble baths. The 242 Veranda Suites are the largest category and popular. Those living especially large bunk in Royal, Grand or Owner Suites, one-to-two bedroom accommodations with even larger verandas. Silver Suites and up receive more perks such as an illy espresso-maker or complimentary laundry; the higher the category, the more amenities. That said, stay in an entry level veranda-free Vista Suite, and experience indulgence in every important way – enjoy butler service, bathe in a stall shower or soaking tub.

Tell us about the crew

Once you’ve experienced Silver Dawn – or other Silversea ship - butlers, you may find sailing without them lacking. Butlers take the time to learn  you - the little things, like wanting breakfast eggs, scrambled well with chives only served in-suite at 8 a.m., or a daily gin martini delivered precisely at six p.m. on the veranda. They whisk away laundry, switch shore excursions and find last-minute dining reservations without breaking a sweat. Quite simply, they make cruising smooth as silk, providing a glimpse of what rarified life is like. They may wear tuxedos and white gloves and strike a formal tone, but their polished presentation never feels stiff. Such service works for this ship, and makes Silversea stand out from Regent Seven Seas and Seabourn, comparable luxury lines. The entire crew strikes that fairly formal tone (except for servers in outdoor eateries)yet you can feel the underlying warmth.

What food and drink options are available on board?

With eight dining choices, eating well and lavishly are de rigueur. Expect a “dine-around” menu for ordering anytime, anywhere, and 24-hour room service including dinner served in courses. Only two restaurants are fee-based (La Dame and Kaiseki) and all require evening reservations except alfresco pizzeria Spaccanapoli, S.A.L.T. Kitchen and three-meal-a-day Atlantide. The 76-seat La Dame’s reservations are the hardest to score; book far in advance for a swoon-worthy French six-course extravaganza awash in delicacies like foie gras, lobster and aged beef. Despite its main-dining status, Atlantide still feels special, with intricate menus starring primo beef and seafood. (Order the Indian food specials; native chefs ensure they’re authentic.) I think everyone loves lively La Terrazza, with its peerless charcuterie board, pillowy focaccia and hand-fashioned daily pastas. (The lasagna and duck ragout pappardelle are fabulous.)

Kaiseki’s really popular for complimentary lunchtime sushi. Come nighttime, chefs up the game, preparing exquisite sashimi and modern Japanese takes on classics like surf and turf that would be equally at home in a chic Manhattan bistro. Silver Note delivers tapas with a cool jazz or blues club scene. (I preferred dropping by later for the excellent entertainment.) S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) Kitchen dishes up cuisine reflecting the sailing region. This restaurant, relatively new to Silversea, is a solid hit for good reason. Cooks don’t gussy up local dishes, keeping the soul in plates like Portuguese pan-fried salt cod on my cruise.

At the poolside Grill, passengers sizzle steaks and fish over hot rocks; many love it simply for its casual under-the-stars vibe. I saw passengers stop walking the jogging track, drawn by the wafting aroma of Neapolitan pizza at Spaccanapoli. My favorite hangout was all-day Arts Café, for frothy pre-workout morning cappuccinos, flaky afternoon scones and evening appetizers such as salmon mousse topped with salmon roe.

Most notably, sustainable top-drawer caviar, presented with all the proper accoutrements, is available complimentary, anytime, anywhere. I made it a nightly fest, gleefully washed down with champagne. The tiny S.A.L.T. Bar, showcasing mixologist concoctions evoking the region, seemed the buzziest. So much so, I never got in. I chilled at Dolce Vita, an expansive people-watching lounge where the bartender stirred perfect martinis and lemon drops.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

Beeline it to Silversea’s next-gen spa Otium, especially if reclining post-treatment, sipping champagne and nibbling house-made treats like marshmallows and dark chocolate truffles, makes you grin. (Those sweets were so good, I stuffed extra in my bathrobe pockets for later.) Modeled after the ancient Roman elite class’s lifestyle, Otium emphasizes indulgence as much as pampering treatments.

Ancient Roman-style art evokes a slightly decadent ambiance, and every room is softly lit. Before a treatment, your butler presents a spa robe in-suite for the upcoming visit. New lengthier Med-inspired treatments like facials and massages rule, with 100-minutes proving popular. Post-massage, I was so relaxed, I pushed the elevator button for the wrong floor. Medi-spa services are also available. All passengers can enjoy the steam rooms and saunas of Otium Thermal Suite complimentarily.

Otium indulgence extends to suites, too. Rest and renewal is a big part of the Otium philosophy; new beds showcase specially designed Otium mattresses and crisp Italian linens. I did sleep deeply each night. Butlers draw (battery-powered) candlelit aromatherapy baths post-treatment and present a wooden tray with champagne and a handmade macaron. I loved the Otium comfort-food room service menu, with treats like truffled popcorn and foie gras burger on brioche, among several selections.

Activities and entertainment

The pool with its two whirlpools is the main hangout. (There’s another hot tub at the ship rear on Deck 10.) Passengers mostly moved between the pool, Pool Bar, loungers and the Grill. Team trivia drew a steady bunch and as did some S.A.L.T. lectures. The Deck 11 jogging track attracted more walkers than runners, cruisers often pausing to soak up the view. Serious workouts take place in the Fitness Centre, a good-sized, well-equipped venue.

S.A.L.T. Lab books 24 students per hands-on cooking class for exploring regional recipes.  I thought our recipes were simple, fashioning chick pea and salted cod salad, and scrambled eggs with salt cod and crisp potatoes, yet our Portuguese instructor fascinated by explaining her culinary culture.

The casino may not be the buzziest real estate, but the Venetian Lounge draws evening crowds. Like most small-ship luxury lines, Silversea eschews big productions; instead, it showcases the Voices of Silversea, a few singers who perform together or solo. I preferred guest artists, a violinist or pianist, perhaps.

I usually avoid production shows like the plague, but ex-Broadway cruise director Vicki Van Tassel put on one that was hysterical. I laughed until I cried. Her act felt like one performed in a Manhattan club for cool kids – so edgy for Silversea.

How was the experience for families?

Silver Dawn is typical Silversea; children are rarely seen onboard; if sailing, they lean older and well-behaved. (The minimum age to sail is six months.) Christmas and Easter promise some kid activities run by a youth counselor.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

My cruise was a short introductory itinerary, roundtrip Lisbon, visiting Portimão. Med sails are Silversea strong suits, so expect many such sails plying this popular sea.

My S.A.L.T. excursion was knockout. These outings highlight local chefs and tastemakers, cuisine and wine. In Portomão, we boarded a small bus to Maria do Mar, a hole-in-the-wall tin fish market/restaurant, where a chef prepares flavor bombs like sardines, anchovies and mackerel on grilled bread. We devoured everything, quaffing much Portuguese white wine (vinho verde) to cheer our insider-y afternoon.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

I didn’t notice any, but I see that Silver Nova, the first of a new ship class debuting in August 2023, leans hard into green initiatives with advanced hybrid technology utilizing fuel cells and promise zero port emissions.

Anything we missed?

Not really. Silver Dawn delivers such a complete package, the ultimate luxury experience, equally balanced in all departments.

Why is the cruise is worth booking?

Silver Dawn delivers most everything a luxury cruiser desires, from sumptuous suites and  choice-filled fine dining, to a next-gen pampering-aplenty spa. Besides, this line intimately knows the Med like few others; if you explore the S.A.L.T. program, so soon shall you.

One of the newest ships within the Silversea Cruises fleet, Silver Dawn debuted in April 2022. Similar in size to its sister ships, Silver Muse and Silver Moon , Silver Dawn can accommodate 596 guests and has the capacity for up to 411 crew members.

Dawn is the first ship within the fleet to offer Otium, a new wellness concept that will eventually be implemented across all of Silversea's ships. The program aims to incorporate luxurious elements of the spa experience throughout the entire voyage, starting with guests' suites. Each cabin features the line's new Otium Soft Touch mattress, a redesigned pillow menu, pillow mists, and special touches like cozy blankets, in-room bath salts or hot chocolate. Suites range in size from 334 square feet to 1,970 square feet and feature ocean views, butler service and full baths with separate showers, among other amenities.

Outside of the accommodations, cruisers will find eight restaurants, including La Terrazza, an Italian eatery, Kaiseki, a Japanese outpost, and S.A.L.T. Kitchen, which features a menu that highlights the local cuisine of the ship's destination. Other onboard facilities include a casino, a pool deck, a boutique, a live entertainment lounge, a fitness center and the S.A.L.T. Lab, where passengers can enjoy workshops, lectures and cooking demonstrations.

Silver Dawn departs from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Lisbon, Portugal , to destinations like Barcelona, Spain , and Lima, Peru .

U.S. News Insider Tip : Consider booking a session with Silversea's newest spa concept, Otium, which debuted on Silver Dawn. Beyond the ancient Rome-inspired treatments available in Otium, the experience continues in-suite, with butler-drawn candlelit baths including a glass of Champagne and a house-made macaron waiting on a tub tray. Classical music plays soothingly in the background. – Janice Wald Henderson, Contributor

5 things to love about Silver Dawn, Silversea Cruises’ new ship

Janice Wald Henderson

After a week on ultra-luxury line Silversea Cruises ' new Silver Dawn, my hot take is that the ship feels slightly edgier, and, dare I say, more fun, than its older siblings.

It's a refreshing surprise, made possible by three strong components in Silversea's evolution. One: A cruise director who can play the traditional warm and fuzzy host but also perform hilarious, more youth-oriented (either by age or mindset) shows. Two: A culinary program that allows food adventurers to explore local cuisine and drinks, both on board and ashore. And three: A newly launched spa that emphasizes ship-wide indulgence as much as soothing treatments.

Here are my five favorite Silver Dawn experiences from a shakedown cruise sailing before the ship's official inaugural Mediterranean voyage.

Service beyond a smile

silversea cruises silver dawn

Walking around the ship, I was genuinely surprised by how many crew members not only said hello but actually asked how I was doing. They could have said it slickly or robotically, but they didn't. I saw their eyes crinkle, a sure way to recognize a smile beneath a mask.

One evening, I rang in-suite dining to order a lobster salad starter for dinner. "Oh no," said the gentleman answering my call, with genuine anguish. "You must order something else. Please, have an entree, too." So I added grilled prawns, to which he replied, "What about dessert? Anything else I can get you? Have a wonderful evening." His caring tone of voice was unmistakable. Perhaps because the world feels so off-kilter at this moment, his kindness touched my heart.

When my in-suite dining server flashed the sweetest smile, I asked him where he was from. "Malawi," he replied, "although my dad is from Zimbabwe and I visit there often." I got excited and shared stories of my last Zimbabwe visit and how much it meant to me. When exiting my suite, he turned and said, "The highlight of this experience at sea was meeting you." Rubbish? Perhaps. Yet as a solo traveler, it was my feel-good moment of the night.

Butlers attend to all kinds of passengers, and my butler, who hailed from Calcutta, read me like a book. He was patient when I felt frazzled with writing, fighting jet lag and was busy with meetings (not the typical cruiser). He solved my internet problem, and later, television issues. Sometimes he popped by midday to see if I needed anything. He brought extra bottles of still water, simply by noticing how much I drank.

Consider new Silversea spa Otium a cruise ship game-changer. And not just for its name, which is pronounced aught-zium , according to Silversea President and CEO Roberto Martinoli, though most passengers will probably say oh-tium or ah-tium .

Enjoy complimentary Champagne and caviar post-massage? It's the place to go.

Otium was designed to conjure up the lifestyle of the ancient Roman elite class, who spent much leisure time basking in the finest pleasures. In other words, pampering and a smidgen (or more) of decadence is part of the new spa conceit — both in the actual spa and in your suite.

For passenger suites (all accommodations are suites), Silversea designed new mattresses and ordered the softest new sheets for better slumber. I definitely noticed the difference; the mattress nearly cocoons your body, and the crisp sheets feel like those I've slept on in France's or Italy's finest hotels.

The line also added an indulgent Otium comfort food menu, like foie gras burgers and lobster on brioche, to the regular in-suite dining selections. An Otium packet placed in nightstands explains the new spa concept and includes menus for spa treatments and in-suite comfort food.

One way to experience Otium in-suite is via a complimentary special bath. Just ask your butler and he will arrange it for the day and time of your choice. Imagine walking into your bathroom and finding an aromatherapy-scented (battery-powered) candlelit bath, with classical music playing in the background. Settle into a tub fitted with a wooden tray, then sip champagne or nibble a freshly baked macaron dramatically presented under glass. Or, simply close your eyes and breathe in the aromatic bath salts.

If you wish to go to the actual spa, your butler will bring you a letter on fancy Otium stationery the day prior to your treatment, with a health form to complete and a special bathrobe to wear to the spa. Sure, health forms aren't sexy, but by completing it in advance, you don't have to begin your cushy spa day with mundane paperwork. The special spa robe is a more obvious perk; it doesn't absorb the oils and creams used in treatment, so your body can soak them up post-treatment instead.

Within the spa, the Roman theme is tastefully expressed through art. Spa improvements include a larger couples treatment room and more longer treatments (100 minutes or more). One niggle: A few passengers told me that the treatment rooms could be better soundproofed; I didn't notice any outside noise during my two experiences.

The softly lit indoor relaxation room, with loungers separated by mesh curtains, feels invitingly sexy. You will want to linger, particularly when your therapist offers a post-treatment choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails and sweets like candied orange peel, chocolate truffles and marshmallows, all made in-house. I tried most and these treats tasted as heavenly as my massage felt. (I actually swiped an extra marshmallow to go.)

An Otium spa treatment also includes a gift to take home (rather than a product hard sell). My therapist presented me with a lime and lemongrass exfoliating body polish and loofah, wrapped with sparkly paper and tied with a bow.

Like in many ship spas, medi-spa treatments can be booked, too. Teeth whitening? Restylane? Imagine heading home looking and feeling far better than when you boarded (which, of course, also can happen for free by simply relaxing on board).

Alas, bliss is not included in your cruise fare, nor does it come cheap. The most inexpensive massage costs $209, and the 100-minute Otium massage runs $399, with gratuities included. Such fees are not atypical on luxury ships, but the steep prices can be a buzzkill for some.

Food, glorious food

silversea cruises silver dawn

Silver Dawn's cuisine excels throughout the ship in all eight dining venues. Yes, Silversea, like most luxury lines, is known for fine cooking, but I was impressed with the polish of the plates as I munched my way through the ship.

As on Silver Moon, the modern French La Dame is larger than on sister ships, seating 76 passengers. This is a smart move by Silversea, as passengers always clamor for reservations to experience this Michelin star-style evening, showcasing ingredients like France's sublime Limousin beef, all presented with a flourish.

Related: The 7 best meals you can have at sea

Even on this all-inclusive ship, the top eateries are not complimentary. La Dame charges $60 per person, and Kaiseki, where deft Japanese chefs perform wonders with pristine fish, costs $40 per passenger. Both are well worth the extra charge – you'd pay far more for such experiences ashore.

If you don't want to pay extra to dine, you won't lack for any fancy foods or skilled preparations. Atlantide lavishes passengers with complimentary caviar, lobster and other high-end ingredients, all beautifully prepared, at dinner. The restaurant offers a couple of dishes (lobster salad, grilled prawns) on the in-suite dining menu; I wish it offered more.

For tasty casual eats, grab a great hot dog with grilled onions and a toasted bun at the poolside Grill, or head to Deck 11 for Spaccanapoli's thin-crusted pizza. I did and loved both. Silver Note scores as a jazz club serving internationally inspired small plates; the music is high caliber, as is the contemporary cuisine.

S.A.L.T.  culinary offerings

silversea cruises silver dawn

Silversea's S.A.L.T. program (an acronym for Sea and Land Taste) delivers in-depth food and wine experiences both on board and ashore, and Silver Dawn is the second ship to embrace the program, after Silver Moon. It's easy to assume that S.A.L.T. is a marketing ploy rather than actual innovation, but that's not the case.

"This is the Anthony Bourdain generation," explained Chief Commercial Officer Barbara Muckermann as to why the program was conceived. Sophisticated cruisers today want to dive deep into the cuisine of visited ports, so Silversea came up with an on-brand way to give travelers what they want.

S.A.L.T. possesses four thoughtfully conceived components to make this program vital: S.A.L.T. Lab as a culinary arts school, S.A.L.T. Kitchen restaurant for regional dining on board, S.A.L.T. shore excursions geared to gastronomic explorations and S.A.L.T. Bar for locally inspired beverages.

S.A.L.T. Lab is a well-designed hands-on cooking school, where up to 24 students at a time learn to prepare regional recipes. Depending upon passenger demand, classes may run from one to three times a day and are complimentary. Subjects vary according to the ship's itinerary. If the sailing is in the Mediterranean, you might take a class on Spanish tapas or preparing French or Italian dishes. Sometimes, a regional culinary expert is on board, giving lectures in the Venetian Lounge.

As I was sailing in Portugal, my class delved into the cuisine of Portuguese family-run restaurants, with an emphasis on salt cod ( bacalhau in Portuguese), which is widely used in cooking there. Our Portuguese-born instructor spoke excellent English and her recipes were well-written and easy to follow. We made a refreshing salt cod and chickpea salad and tasty scrambled eggs with salt cod and crispy potatoes. Both were easy to make with ingredients that had been pre-prepped for us. I'd like to see more advanced culinary classes befitting those more comfortable in the kitchen.

The 158-seat S.A.L.T. Kitchen restaurant ambitiously pursues a menu reflecting the ship's itinerary, and therefore, changes it often. That's no mean feat on a cruise ship, which must procure ever-changing special ingredients, and constantly retrain its cooks to prepare plates authentically.

Food cruisers' biggest pet peeve is when a ship departs a port before dinnertime, meaning you can't score a fabulous meal ashore. However, with S.A.L.T. Kitchen, you can experience a relatively authentic dinner on board.

One evening, I tucked into sliced Portuguese-style tuna, marinated with blood orange juice, sherry vinegar and honey, before enjoying a quintessentially Portuguese pan-fried salt cod. I wasn't the only one liking this restaurant; it was packed nightly, perhaps because this dinnertime eatery is complimentary and no reservations are required.

S.A.L.T. shore excursions allow small groups of passengers (usually under 20) to discover local food culture in places they'd never find on their own. In Portimão, we toured a former cannery, now a poignant museum, that had old black-and-white photographs depicting what life was like for women working there decades ago.

Then we visited a hole-in-the-wall tinned fish market and restaurant and feasted on delicious sardines, mackerel and anchovies served on grilled bread. As an extra bonus, the chef used a blowtorch to char dried octopus before cutting it into tiny pieces for us to nibble. We washed it all down with multiple glasses of local rose and white wine. I'm certain I would not have thought to venture into this place on my own.

In other ports, you may visit an organic farm in Greece or lunch with a vineyard owner in Sicily. These outings can be booked before your cruise and vary in cost from $150 to $350 per person — not inexpensive, but unforgettable.

S.A.L.T. Bar is the program's final component. Here, mixologists craft cocktails showcasing regional ingredients. It's the coolest, buzziest bar on board (so buzzy, I never found a seat every time I peeked in).

Comedic cruise director

silversea cruises silver dawn

I almost fell off my chair when the bouncy blonde cruise director hopped on stage for the Silver Dawn welcome onboard reception and said, "Hi, I'm Vicki Van Tassel. That's not my stripper name, that's my real name." I was so shocked, I'm not sure I got the quote exactly right.

I'd expect such shtick on Virgin Voyages or another fun-driven line, but not on board elegant, sophisticated Silversea. Vicki was a singer, dancer, comic and Broadway actress before becoming a cruise director. On board, she stars in a show called "Ship Happens." (I accidentally called it "You-Know-What Happens" to my most proper butler, who attempted a straight face before bursting out laughing.)

Her performance was a comedic take on her life seeking success on Broadway, and it was hysterically funny. I'm guessing there were 20-somethings to 80-somethings in my Venetian Lounge row, and every passenger of every age was laughing nonstop.

Vicki was totally edgy, poking gentle fun at everything and everyone but mostly making fun of herself. She tap-danced, told jokes, then belted "All That Jazz" and danced like a Broadway star for the finale. The audience leaped to its feet and gave her a standing ovation as tears filled Vicki's eyes.

Most cruise directors seem so old-school, slick and superficial to me; Vicki delivered a cool contemporary factor to Silver Dawn.

What to Expect from Silver Dawn’s Roman-Inspired Otium SPA

Silver dawn.

When Silversea Cruises launches Silver Dawn in April, the third in a series of ships that includes Silver Moon and Silver Muse, it will unveil a brand new, exclusive spa concept. We’ve been sharing details about Otium , the Roman-influenced spa that focuses on wellness through the pursuit of pleasure rather than sacrifice, for the past six months. And now that Otium, which extends the wellness concept from its spa to suites, on verandas, and even via a special gourmet room service menu, is actually here, we can’t wait to tell you more.

“For Otium we were inspired by the Romans’ philosophy of caring for the body and mind and reflects Silversea’s own Italian roots,” Barbara Muckermann, Silversea’s Chief Commercial Officer and the inspiration behind Otium, reminds us. “Their baths are precursors of our modern-day spas. They were the designated places where enjoyment and wellness were organically connected through the architectural beauty and luxurious materials of the halls, the invigorating properties of the water pools and saunas, and also the music, poetry, food, wine and conversation.

“With this in mind, we wanted to create a holistic experience focused on pleasure. But the important thing to understand is that encouraging indulgence is not an ode to being unhealthy, it’s about balance.”

First thing to know: The Otium Spa onboard Silver Dawn is not just a cosmetic transformation from those onboard Silver Moon and Silver Muse . The entire space has been reimagined and slightly expanded. (In fact, Otium’s interior, at 791 square meters, is 16.15 square meters larger than the spa on Silver Moon and 36 square meters larger than that of Silver Muse ).

That’s because in the tradition of the Roman Bath, a visit involved more than just a massage or facial. It was a ritual, in which you not only are pampered with treatments but also spend time in steam rooms, saunas, showers, and, importantly, resting and socializing. The traditional Roman spa had individual spaces for all its functions.

As conceived, the concept of Otium positions the spa, which also includes a beauty salon, barber shop and fitness facility, as not just a destination. It’s a journey, one that begins in guest suites and then transports you to the otherworldliness of the spa. In this case, says Matteo Pace, an associate with global hospitality design firm HBA London, and the lead designer on Otium, “inspiration came from the idea that travelers today are looking for moments of magic. They are craving moments of being completely transported to a dreamier place, making the overall experience special in a way that we have lost for three years.”

And That’s Why Otium’s Ambience Is So Important

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Otium-lobby.jpeg

The psychic impact begins when you arrive at the spa. You walk along a long, curving corridor, a colonnade inspired by Roman baths, that’s an architectural detail to make the entrance feel more welcoming. The beautiful colors and vibrant pieces that spice up the lobby may remind those of you who’ve traveled on Silver Moon and who have experienced the vibrant decor in S.A.L.T.’s bar and lab. You wouldn’t be wrong. Pace also designed those venues.

Throughout, in the treatment rooms and salon, the color theme, aiming to bring the outside indoors, is rife with earth tones and sea colors. The lighting is gentle, programmed to feel almost like dusk, that golden hour in the sky.

The treatment rooms, Pace tells us, “aren’t just cubicles in which spa treatments occur. They are part of the experience.” Quiet and serene, they reflect the shades of the sea’s blues and greens . Walls have a mural with texture that offers a softening effect. “Massage rooms,” he says, “were considered cozy retreats at the Roman baths.”

Relax Like a Roman: The Experience Behind Otium

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is SilverSeaDawnSpa0937.jpeg

Once you are massaged and facialized, the Otium journey introduces a ritual of combined experiences.  The relaxation room in a huge contrast, is contemporary, sleek and modern. The lighting is moody, inspiring reflection or, as was common in the day of the Roman Empire, quite vibrantly social. It’s anchored by a water plinth, which offers a wavy reflection in the ceiling and reminds you that you are at sea. This thermal suite, which features sauna and steam in addition to chaises for lounging, centers around a strong sense of community and of discovery. It’s an enchanting ambience in which to meditate or engage.

Treats (which are also available in the beauty salon to those having hair or nail treatments) adhere to the premise that wellness should include indulgence and so Champagne, Otium-inspired cocktails, macarons, and chocolates are all on hand. And, in keeping with the Roman philosophy that balance and personal choice are essential rights, you’ll also find fresh fruit and infused waters. Soothing music throughout is inspired by ancient Rome.

Beyond the thermal suite, on the aft, a spa-only open deck further reinforces the connection between Otium and the sea. Communing with the horizon is the next step on this particular spa journey. And then it’s back to your suite where await bathing and sleeping experiences, and the first dedicated balcony experience at sea.

Otium’s Wellness Menu, At Its Core

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is OTIVM-treatment.jpeg

Central to the concept of nurturing minds and indulging in pleasure is of course the treatments that have, like the spa itself, been inspired by the Roman baths — and their Mediterranean roots. Debuting on Silver Dawn will be 13 Otium signature services.

Another difference? Signature treatments last longer than the industry standard of 60- or 80-minutes; these clock in at the 100-minute mark, which translates to even more of a relaxation experience.

If you are like me, the only challenge surrounding the signature massages is to decide which treatment to choose from the Wellness Menu. Among them? The Otium, in which fragrant oils infused with shea butter, raspberry and chamomile are used and the massage therapist then applies a variety of natural materials, from mineral-rich pink salt stones to natural bamboo, to stimulate your body and soul. The Appollonian Spirit focuses on re-energizing tired muscles. And the Divine Experience also resonates; it uses mood-balancing aromatics and includes a decadent scalp, neck, shoulder and hand massage.

In the salon, there’s the Vulcano Island Mud Pedicure, inspired by Sicily, and the Mediterranean Hand Delight, which appeals to the senses with oils of sweet orange, cedarwood and sage and targets age spots and dry skin.  The Barber Salon has the Emperor’s Chair, a double-close shave, scalp, face, hand and arm massage, along with an eyebrow trim.

And of course, Silversea’s more traditional offerings, from nail treatments and facials to Medi-Spa and acupuncture, are on offer as well.

Stay tuned for more reports on Otium as we will continue to share our experiences from Silver Dawn.

Silversea Cruises Revises Itinerary for 2025 World Cruise

  • April 6, 2024

Silver Dawn

Silversea Cruises reportedly plans to revise the itinerary of its 2025 world cruise to avoid the Red Sea and the Middle East.

Sailing from Tokyo to New York City, the 136-night voyage originally included destinations in those regions, as well as a crossing of the Suez Canal.

However, according to reports from booked guests, the cruise will now sail across the Indian Ocean before continuing to Western Europe via Africa.

As a result, all ports of call in the Mediterranean and the Middle East have been removed from the voyage.

Instead, the cruise will feature several new destinations in West and East Africa, such as the Seychelles, Mauritius, South Africa, Angola, Senegal, Gambia and more.

New ports of call will include Cape Town, Mahe, Takoradi, Lüderitz, Tema, Dakar, Port Louis, Luanda and Banjul.

Silversea’s 2025 world cruise, named “Controtempo,” was first revealed in 2022 and is scheduled to set sail on January 13, 2025 onboard the Silver Dawn.

The original itinerary featured visits to a total of 59 destinations in 30 countries across four continents.

According to Silversea, the voyage was designed to take guests closer to the authentic heartbeat of iconic and off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Traveling from East to West, the itinerary also allows for more time ashore in unconventional seasons, the company said.

As part of the new itinerary, the Silver Dawn is scheduled to visit several ports of call in the Far East after leaving Japan.

The 596-guest vessel will then head to Southeast Asia for destinations in Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand before continuing to the Indian Ocean.

Following the new segment in Africa, the cruise will continue in Northern and Western Europe, featuring destinations in the North Sea, Scandinavia, the United Kingdom and the Baltic Sea. Before arriving in New York City, the Silver Dawn will also visit Iceland, Greenland and Canada.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

silversea cruises silver dawn

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

silversea cruises silver dawn

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

silversea cruises silver dawn

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

silversea cruises silver dawn

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

silversea cruises silver dawn

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

silversea cruises silver dawn

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

silversea cruises silver dawn

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

All-inclusive-Leistungen an Bord
