  • Don't just get your international travel shots! It’s a good idea for adults and children to be up to date with routine vaccines before they leave the country. If you are not sure if you or your children are up to date with routine shots, call your health care provider. More information is also available on our Immunization website.

NOTE: Always call the clinic before going. Most require an appointment and may require you to see a health care provider first.

When I walked in there was one person behind the counter, then a another gentleman came around the corner (chewing food) said he could "help you over here" than had me standing there waiting for over 5 minute. I went back to the lab and pushed the buzzer, waited, ended having to pish it 3 time before the phlebotomist poked his head around the corner and said "hold on a second" disappeared for almost 10 minutes then returned, ordered me to sit, then disappeared (again) for another 5 minute. Then reappeared and asked (demanded) whether I wanted vein or finger prick, I had to repeat myself 5 times, he wanted to argue. The blood draw took 5x longer than ANY draw I'd ever had, he was snotty and a total jerk. the results were not submitted (it was a Friday at 2pm) until the following Monday. Worst Lab ever, don't go here it's awful.

this has been my best experience in healthcare EVER! I was seen by Laura Hart, CNP, a travel nurse practitioner. She was diligent, professional, and she TOOK HER TIME talking to both of us during our travel consultation! Researching our medical histories, finding the correct vaccination requirements for our travel to distant climates, approachable and happily answering ALL of our questions, she is the example of the best of healthcare! We did need shots, which Maria S, RN administered quickly and almost painlessly! Our appointments were scheduled for late afternoon (3:30pm) and when checking our vital signs, Maria asked if we had a good lunch. Upon hearing that I didn't, she provided me with a couple of bags of animal crackers and juices, so when my turn for shots came up, I wouldn't be uncomfortable! Way to go ABOVE & BEYOND the normal healthcare experience!

I saw Sarah Ann Ndyajunwoha, MD, who was nice and gracious during my visit but terrible in treatment. I made an appointment for my annual physical which she confused as my annual obgyn exam. She didn't draw any blood work to check my cholesterol, which has been high for me in the past and I wanted checked. She pretty much blew it off saying I should be fine and it doesn't need to be checked annually?! I also received charge that should have been covered by my insurance but the billing staff added incorrectly to my visits billing. They are so arrogant they won't listen to your side of the issue when I called to inquire about it. Overall the staff was nice, scheduling was easy but I had to tell three different people, including the dr. that I had forwarded my records before my first visit here. They were finally found on the dr.'s desk which the dr. hastily looked through during my visit. She just seemed rushed and didn't seem to care. I am new to Minneapolis and sort of mortified this place passes as medical treatment.

Waiting on the phone for a very long time , and a lady who answered my call yesterday couldn't find a medication that I told her I needed refill and my medication list is very short , only 2 active on there that I refill regularly, once she found it she said that she can't pronounce it cuz it's too long . Just all and all was unfriendly and a bit rude on the phone But i love my doctor there so guess I still need to go there

The clinic, itself, is located in the 3033 Building right on Excelsior Blvd. It's not hard to find at all, large green-tinted glass building right off of Calhoun Parkway. Parking is good, as there is a private lot and, if I'm not mistaken, valet parking is also available. This location is also very close in proximity to where I now live, but I have been a patient of Dr. Sarah Ndyajunwoha's for at least six years now. She is my spouse's physician, and he had nothing but good things to say about her, and I also wanted to find a physician who is a woman of color, so both criteria helped in the decision-making process to enlist her as my primary care physician. The bonus is that Dr. Sarah (as she is affectionately called) is really a very caring and supportive physician. She listens intently to my problems and is also open to finding alternative solutions to certain medical issues that I might have. Years ago, when my cholesterol was high, she wasn't quick to put on me statin drugs (which are really bad for the body). She actually suggested I try red yeast rice as a supplement and see how that would work for me. I did try it for a short while, but I had to discontinue taking red yeast rice because I began experiencing leg cramps (which is one of the side effects). I did find a couple of other supplements (CoQ10 and policosanol) which have worked very well to lower my cholesterol, and Dr. Sarah approves of my taking those. The support staff and nurses have always treated me well, and they also respect my wishes not to be weighed all the time when I arrive and to take my blood pressure using a thigh or a leg cuff, as I have large forearms, and if my blood pressure is taken with a regular-sized adult cuff, the reading tends to be artificially elevated. I personally avoid going to the doctor office as much as possible, unless it's something that is outside of the scope of being able to treat and resolve myself, but I don't mind coming to see Dr. Sarah and interacting with the staff here for even just lab work. They tend to make my visits very efficient and pleasant experience.

I have visited Dr. Sarah Ndyajunwoha for years and have loved the fact that she's comfortable to talk to, really listens, will send you for further tests and works WITH you to determine what should happen. I've never had a problem getting an appointment and love how the online app makes asking questions even easier. I definitely recommend her as a doctor and love how easy it is to get to this clinic location.

Time to downgrade Fairview Uptown. Their phone/appointment system is dismal. Lovely, lovely doctors and staff there, but life is getting short waiting for them to answer their phone.

I've been going to Fairview Uptown for some 20 years, so I've seen several different doctors there and am consistently impressed with the care team. 5 stars for the service they provide! That said, as I sit here on hold for 15 minutes trying to make an appointment, I can barely manage 1 star for the phone/communication system. They have some serious problems there. And it's not just the hold time trying to reach them. I've also experienced myriad troubles trying to get correct prescriptions sent over to my pharmacy. I'm fortunate that I notice when they screw up--which is often--but what about seniors or others who might not notice when a prescription is wrong? A disaster waiting to happen. They also have this annoying habit of trying to communicate messages to me through the pharmacy, like when I need to make an appointment before they'll refill my prescription. So then I don't find out until the morning my prescription runs out that I can't refill! They have this fancy secure message system but, instead of sending me a message, they tell Target pharmacy to tell the pharmacist to tell the person at the register to tell me something?? How about calling ME or emailing ME when you need to talk to me? Again, great individual providers but I expect far better service from the rest of the office systems/staff.

Photo of Leah O.

Like most people, I haaaaaaaate scheduling my annual appointment. Every time I pick up the phone to do it, I know I'm staring down the barrel of piles of paperwork from insurance companies, awkward poking and proddings, and guilt about lying about my height. (Adding an inch isn't so bad, right? RIGHT?) So when I run into hurdles every step of the way in this already-ardurous-and-miserable process, I get annoyed. They called two different times before my appointment- during work hours, of course-with virtually the same question (what's your new address?). When I tried to call them the morning of my appointment to get clarification on something, I spent 10 minutes on hold FOUR DIFFERENT TIMES before getting exasperated and hanging up each time. When I got there, I talked to three different nurses about a procedure I needed and whether or not they felt like providing it to me, getting three different answers each time, when I made it perfectly clear that if I COULD get it, I wanted it. And to cap it all off (and this is for the ladies out there who deal with this shit ALL.THE.TIME) the lady doctor I saw spent 10 minutes- using vague and silly reasons- trying to talk me out of the birth control method I made it clear I wanted. The conversation went like this: Me: I want something long-term and I don't like the Pill. Her: YOU SHOULD TRY THE PILL! That other thing is long-term, which is bad. Me: ...................... I go to Planned Parenthood now, and it is da bomb. Skip this place.

My first time visit. Being new in town. Went to the wrong address of another Fairview Clinic. Called to say i was running late. Got there 17 mins late and was refused to be seen. No way I will reschedule or ever go back.

Ive been a patient of Dr. Pleasants @ Fairview Uptown for over 15 years. Great manner and easy to talk to about any concern. In today for travel vaccinations. The travel clinic is a bonus for the frequent traveler!

BLOOMINGTON, MN— July 16, 2019

Minneapolis-based nonprofit health system, M Health Fairview, will open a new M Health Fairview walk-in clinic at Mall of America. M Health Fairview is the new brand that will be formally introduced later this year that combines the expertise of Fairview Health Services, the University of Minnesota and University of Minnesota Physicians. The clinic will open this November on level 3, East at the Mall, offering a variety of health care needs to the millions of visitors and employees that are at Mall of America every day.

“We’re working to make the best healthcare as convenient and accessible as possible for people,” says Laura Reed, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Executive at Fairview. “This new clinic brings high quality healthcare much closer to people whether they are shopping, traveling, or working at or near the Mall of America.”

The clinic is positioned to provide clinical services to employees and tenants of the Mall as well as visitors staying at the many surrounding hotels. In addition to treating minor illnesses and injuries, the clinic will also provide travel health consultations for those traveling internationally, physicals for school, sports and summer camps, vaccinations and employer drug screenings, among other common services. Fairview clinic responds to post-covid rise in fatiguing disorder in kids.

A new M Health Fairview clinic is confronting an exhausting disorder that has afflicted more children since the pandemic and caused alarming spikes in heart rate, blood pressure and breathing.

Dr. Matthew Ambrose said it is disheartening to see so many more cases of the condition known as POTS. But the increase at least spurred awareness, and accelerated plans for a clinic in Minneapolis that can better diagnose and treat children who in the past were dismissed.

"Sometimes they're being told outright that they are making it up, that it's all in their head," said Ambrose, a pediatric cardiologist and a leader of the clinic. "It's really dispiriting to hear. They can't even be at school because they are too tired."

POTS emerged prior to the pandemic in about one in 500 children and young adults, usually after infectious diseases triggered aggressive responses by their immune systems. So doctors weren't shocked when POTS became more of a problem during the pandemic. An estimated 96% of Minnesota children had been infected by the end of 2022 with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, based on a federal review of pediatric blood samples, creating a huge risk pool for the development of the disorder.

The condition bears similarities to long COVID, the lingering cognitive and physical problems that people experience after coronavirus infections, but with at least one distinguishing characteristic. POTS is short for postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, and it is defined by a severe and immediate increase in heart rate whenever people switch positions by sitting or standing up.

Anna Burt, 14, was a bubbly dancer, skier and cheerleader from Sioux Falls, S.D., when she was diagnosed with COVID-19 in October 2020. The resulting exhaustion left her struggling to walk, and often was marked by a pounding heartbeat that raced up to 160 beats per minute.

"Its like a big drum," the girl said.

Anna Burt lies in a hospital bed after her COVID-19 diagnosis in 2020; the COVID side effects lingered and eventually she developed POTS.

Burt was first taken to M Health Fairview's clinic for long COVID, because she was experiencing the characteristic "brain fog," along with stomach pain and dizziness. She struggled to sit up, even to ride in the car to the doctor's office.

"She really was trapped in the house," said her mother, Jody Burt.

Her POTS diagnosis became clear after the family met Ambrose, who had observed cases prior to the pandemic and had taken a clinical and research interest in the condition. Just finding a clinician who believed Anna and her family was vital, her mother said. "We weren't getting that. Most of the time, we were getting, 'its just constipation.'"

Depression and anxiety often occur alongside POTS, so much that they are often mistaken as the causes of children's lethargy, research has shown .

Drinking water can reduce POTS flareups, and exercise and physical therapy can help patients regain function, Ambrose said. But patients often need poorly understood and even controversial medication regimens. Naltrexone treats opioid addiction but appears in low doses to reduce POTS-related fatigue. Steroids regulate water, and sodium levels and can prevent or reduce attacks.

Beta blocker drugs that lower blood pressure were thought to worsen POTS, but recent studies suggest they help. POTS is related to the autonomic nervous system, or the portion of the nervous system that controls subconscious functions such as heart rate and body temperature.

The drugs temper the body's reaction to signals from that system, Ambrose said. "It's like being at a rock concert but wearing hearing protection."

The clinic's goal is to package together treatments that families struggle to access separately, and to keep tabs on patients through online check-ups and counseling. By following patients over time, the clinic also hopes to prove which treatments work best and how much progress children with POTS can make.

"When I tell people I think we can get them to a place where they are fully functional, I mean it," Ambrose said. "But it does take work and time and trial and error ... and an Avengers team of physical therapists."

The clinic sometimes looks for little successes, Ambrose added, giving fluid infusions to one patient so she had the energy just to go to prom.

Anna Burt has progressed from a wheelchair to crutches to walking, but she still can't run without exhaustion. She has replaced old pursuits, trying swimming and archery. She tried playing with slime toys to alleviate boredom, but they irritated her skin. So she invented a non-irritating version that she plans to sell under the brand Rainbow Slimes.

She said her pain and symptoms are under better control, as long as she keeps up with therapy exercises and remembers her medication. She rides a recumbent bicycle for exercise and has returned to school for art class. Changes day to day are imperceptible, but Anna said she has made long-term improvements and dreams of being active.

"Sometimes I get sad. I'm just tired of doing this over and over and over again, but I wouldn't change the experience I had," she said. "Definitely a lot of parts suck, like most of it, 99% sucks. But I wouldn't be who I am now without it."

Anna Burt was diagnosed in 2020 with COVID-19 — and eventually long COVID and POTS.

The Russian Healthcare System: A Quick Overview

Russia offers treatment options at different levels of government and region. Here’s a breakdown of how you can access medical treatment in Russia:

  • At the municipal level are Health Posts that offer basic out-patient care for non-emergency situations, for example, vaccinations and routine check-ups.
  • Also generally at the municipal level are Health Centers that are specialized for maternity care and also offer routine surgery.
  • At the regional level are Urban Polyclinics which offer a wider array of services including follow-up care for complex conditions. Some of the larger polyclinics will have in-house specialists, for example, oncologists and cardiologists.
  • Almost exclusively in large cities are Specialized Medical Hospitals which offer the full range of medical services and are also open 24 hours.

This last point about the 24-hour opening is quite important, as many healthcare facilities in Russia operate during normal business hours or are closed at night. Needing immediate medical care ‘off-hours’ can prove challenging or expensive. Many private facilities also observe closing hours or charge high premiums for after-hour care.

Is Healthcare in Russia Free?

Like so many countries, Russia’s healthcare system is based around insurance. And like many European countries, Russia offers its citizens what is meant to be universal healthcare. But in order to gain access to free public healthcare, Russian residents are required to pay in through their employment. The Russian Federation has guaranteed all of its citizens’ free healthcare since ratifying its Constitution in 1996. But in actuality, many people in the population are not covered. In some rural areas, the majority of people have no coverage or access to quality healthcare.

Russia’s Hospital System

How is russia’s public hospital and healthcare system.

Just as there are areas of the country where the population does not have access to quality healthcare, so is it within the public sector. And overall Western visitors are likely to find the Russian healthcare system, especially the public one, not up to standards. Challenges faced within the public hospital system, particularly for foreigners, include food shortages, a lack of English speakers, extremely long wait times, underfunding, basic equipment and facilities, or even a lack of equipment altogether. So if the question is, ‘Are hospitals in Russia good?’ for the average Western expat, if they are discussing the public hospital system, the answer is most likely going to be no.

Russia’s Private Hospitals

The popular choice for expats and visitors to Russia are private hospitals. These often offer English-speaking doctors and staff. The medical treatment available at some of Russia’s private hospitals is very much up to international standards. These hospitals can often be quite expensive. Treatment in Russia’s private hospitals can be costly by the standards of Western medicine. That is why it is so important to have the right insurance that will offer you coverage. Another important point about the private hospital system is that clinics and hospitals are the only options within the private system. There are not private surgeries or practices that offer complex procedures. Rather, doctors, even though is a private system, must operate within an accredited hospital or clinic.

Before traveling to Russia, it is vital to have quality health insurance.

What You Need to Know About Accessing Russia’s Hospital System as an Expat

Once again, access is based on whether this is the public or private system. Those using the public hospital system will either have to show proof of coverage through employment or pay upfront. For those with state-sponsored insurance, there will be no costs. However, it is necessary to show proof of insurance from the start to avoid admitting fees. Public hospitals will treat emergency situations but then bill afterward, as well as for any follow-up treatment, both in-patient or outpatient. For this and all non-emergency services, payment is always expected upfront.

Those accessing the private hospital system should expect to pay upfront. Even with private insurance, many private facilities expect to be paid upfront. In order to avoid this, it is vital to choose both private insurance as well as a hospital that already has an arrangement with the insurance company to bill directly.

How Many Hospitals Are in Russia?

Russia is a country with many hospitals. In just Moscow, there are well over 100 hundred hospitals. As of 2018, there were 5.3 thousand hospitals in Russia. The numbers from 2010 until 2018 show a marked decrease during that timeframe. There was a total net loss of 1,000 hospitals in less than a decade.
