Vision of the Seas Review and Video Tour

The layout of the Vision made it easy to learn your way around the ship on embarkation day.  The ship never seemed crowded unless you happened to walk by show or dinner when it was getting out. Embarkation was the quickest we have ever experienced and we were on the ship by 10:45 a.m.

The staff on the Vision of the Seas was friendly and helpful at all times.  The service provided by the assistant maitre d’ Alex was absolutely phenomenal in the Windjammer Cafe.  He always stopped by every table, asking them how they were doing and if they needed anything. He has a bright future ahead with Royal Caribbean.

The staff also took an interest in my last name asking about my nationality and where I was from.  I have never had so many ask about it on a cruise, it was a nice personal touch.  Any issues we had with our cabin were quickly resolved after speaking with our room steward.   Overall, the crew on the Vision of the Seas did a great job.

Bar service was slow as there never seemed to have enough bartenders on duty.  We purchased the Royal Replenish package ($20 per day) giving us unlimited non alcoholic drinks for the cruise.  Even though Passion Papaya was one of the featured drinks, it was always made a different way.  Some used ice, some crushed iced, and others made it as a smoothie.  Since Royal Caribbean is offering this package, it would also be really helpful to have a menu or list of “mocktails” available like other cruise lines do.

The Windjammer (main buffet) closed at 3 p.m. each day and didn’t reopen until 6:30 p.m. for dinner.  After a long day in port, it is nice to grab a quick bite to eat to carry you over until dinner, especially if you have the late seating at 8:00 p.m.  The only option in the late afternoon was the small Park Cafe in the Solarium.

Since the Park Cafe was the only place open during this time, there was a bit of a line but they did have salads, sandwiches, and pizza.  The Park Cafe was also the only option after 9 p.m. with limited options.

Aquarius, the main dining room, was open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The 2nd floor is used for guests who have My Time Dining and the lower floor is for guests with traditional dining.  The service provided by the staff was superb and I highly recommend making reservations if you have My Time Dining.

There are several specialty options that were added during the renovations in 2013.  Giovanni’s Table is open for lunch ($15 per person) and dinner ($20 per person). Chops Grille ($35 per person)  is the steakhouse onboard the Vision.  For those who enjoy Asian-inspired cuisine, Izumi has a a la carte menu and comes with a great view.

There was the typical Broadway style shows found on all cruise ships with “Broadway Rhythm and Rhyme” and “Boogie Wonderland”.  One night featured the music and comedy of Rick Corso and another was the Man of 1,000 Voices, Paul Boland.  The last night featured Luis Dalton, a 4th generation from a family of circus acts.  Passengers raved after his show telling him that he belonged at Caesars in Las Vegas.

The Renaissance Aerial Spectacular took place in the renovated Centrum and was followed by the International Parade of Flags.  If you would like a good seat, plan on arriving approximately 1 hour before the show is scheduled to start.  It is definitely worth the wait to have an unobstructed view for the aerial show.

The Solarium is an adults only area that is covered and located near the Vitality Day Spa.  There is a pool, 2 hot tubs, and a bar.  In the evenings, the Solarium was basically a ghost town and you can enjoy this area basically all to yourself.  Some nights, the pool and hot tubs closed early for cleaning but were open most evenings.  This was one of our favorite spots on the ship.

Our oceanview stateroom was typical of what you would expect on an older cruise ship.  Royal Caribbean did update the cabins with flatscreen TVs and new sinks and cabinets.  There was ample closet space for our clothes and the bed was comfortable.

There was no mini fridge in our room but there were two power outlets by the desk.  The cabin also had a small couch and coffee table.  You can watch a short 2 minute video of our cabin below.

Odds and Ends

The casino was small and it seemed as though Royal Caribbean tried to squeeze in as many slot machines as possible.  They offered table games such as blackjack, roulette, and craps.  They also had a video poker table.  When the casino was open, there wasn’t any place to get away from the smell of smoke.

There is a rock climbing wall in the aft of the ship that was open during select hours.  However, there is no basketball court on the Vision.

The internet onboard was faster than other cruise ships I have been on, but still not on par with typical broadband speeds that we are accustomed to at home.  They did offer an unlimited package for the entire cruise for only $99.

The Some Enchanted Evening Lounge, located in the aft of the ship with great wake views, was usually completely empty unless there was an activity going on in there.  If you are looking for a quiet place for your group to gather at, this is the best spot as there will be plenty of chairs and you will likely be the only ones in there.

We are sailing on her next year. We have only been on one other cruise- carnival spirit- and I’m a bit nervous due to the lack of things to do on vision, and lack of included options for food…. (seeing as good is a big thing on cruise ships! Lol) it’s a longer cruise than our first, with lots of sea days, so I’m hoping we won’t get sick of reading. Shame the cooking classes weren’t included, seeing as there’s not a lot of options. Any way, a holiday is always great right? And it will be our first visit to the US as well.

We were real close to you. In the beginning. Service issues, dictated that they give us another room. I believe you were in an H or an I. They gave us a “D1″ to compensate us for our issues. Deck 7. 7074 .( Ocen View w/Balcony). And other issues resulted in a $700 FCC, We LOVE VISION of the Seas. Our Second time around. on her. Captain” Lis” is the best MASTER at sea.

John Cooper steps down from Vision Cruise

John Cooper, the face of Vision Cruise on TV advertising channels, has left the business.

He was brand director for the cruise specialist for more than a decade.

Liverpool-based Cooper announced yesterday that he was leaving the company after making his final broadcast.

He said he was leaving “on really good terms”.

Cooper added on Facebook: “As soon as I know what my future holds, you will be the first to know.”

He thanked the Vision team “who have made the last ten years the most memorable in my life.

“I would also like to thank all the customers and friends I have met along the way, as well as all my former colleagues who I have really enjoyed working with.”

Cooper, a former radio presenter, than posted that he was flying on holiday to Orlando.

Booked a family holiday of a lifetime. Vision Cruise committed to and identified a suitable villa for a party of seven including a disabled person, requiring walk in access to shower. Promised the earth delivered a different villa forcing disabled person to be washed down each day for a fortnight. Many other problems were encountered. Vision cruise responses were very disappointing.

Alls good until something goes wrong

Please don’t book as you take a big risk with this company. All is great when booking with the agents but when things go wrong no one is there to help you or they say they will come back to you and they delay until last minute when nothing can be done. They also do not fully understand the terms and conditions for the underlying cruise company as they focus on getting their fees through rather than making sure the customer is looked after. I’ve been on many cruises and never experienced a company who does not care about their customers.

Cancelled cruise

Ive used this company for many cruises giving them much revenue..Had to cancel cruise booked due to P&O state of vessel being used for world cruise..as i booked this £40,000 cruise for 2025..cancelled a few others to afford this one..but as now cancelled they have charged me & husbsnd £25 pp..on all cancelled cost me another £200 plus ccard fee..very short sighted due to how many bookings ive had with them wont book anything else with them..very disappointed with their attitude

I’ve booked with Vision cruises quite a…

I’ve booked with Vision cruises quite a few times before. The customer service agents are usually rude and deal with customers queries with attitude. I’ve only ever spoke to one agent that was upbeat and polite. After my telephone conversation today with Sophia this will be my last time booking or dealing with vision cruises. So rude the whole team need customer service training.

Good company in general

Claims there are amazing deals but even when ringing straight away they claim that the deal was sold out but can offer you something else. We did end up booking in the end and the proccess from there was smooth and very good but was just dissapointed at the apparant deal not being available

52 minutes ago Shocking lack of concern for its customers regarding the corona virus. I am cruising on P&O Ventura in 8 days through Vision and I am chasing information. Considering people are dying and cruises are being quarantined it's a discrace we get nothing from Vision or P&O.

Great Experience

Have booked with Vision Cruise (Liverpool Cruise Club) for the past 3 years. Have never had any trouble and they have been helpful. P&O from Southampton was my favourite cruise and got a great deal from the golden envelope on TV. Will use again..

BEWARE, BEWARE

BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE, I can only say after having to cancel my holiday because my wife went into hospital , the customer service is not so good . They are very fast in taking your money but not so fast in helping you to get it back for insurance . BEWARE , Our holiday was cancelled on 16th June 2018 and it is now 17th of September and i have just been told to wait another couple of weeks . I have had to telephone this company so many times , to be told we were refunded in mid July and they kept saying check with my bank , so i did and all the statements , when last week i exhausted all avenues , i finally got them to look into it for them to realise i had not been refunded . When you phone customers service you can be hanging on the phone for so long before they answer ......

Disney Cruise Line Stateroom Television Channel Lineup & On-Demand Offerings

There is so much to do on a Disney Cruise and the various ports of call, that television and on-demand offerings may be the last thing on your mind, but if you are looking for something to watch there is a treasure trove of content available. Well, at least on the Dream class ships as the stateroom entertainment offerings vary drastically by ship class. The Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have interactive on demand programing while the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder just have old school tv with special channels looping through various programing and movies. All the ships include a selection of films in Spanish along with content from Disney Junior Latin, Disney Channel Latin and Disney XD Latin.

On-Demand Selections

DCL’s on-demand programing is exclusive to the Dream & Fantasy with titles grouped into categories. Hollywood features include newish releases that are not “Disney” movies. The other movie titles are what you’d expect to see on a Disney ship within the following categories Live Action, DisneyNature, Animation, Marvel, Pixar and Disney Channel Original Movies. Additionally, there are Disney Shorts such as Frozen Fever, documentaries from ESPN and short clips from Good Morning America. There does seem to be one category missing… Lucasfilm, although it could be an oversight or a right issue although Lucas retains digital distribution rights to the Star Wars films  (page 13). Regardless, neither the Star Wars or Indiana Jones films are available on demand. I really only thought about this omission while on the Fantasy after the realization they had the Star Wars Day at Sea cruises earlier in the year and all be expanding the offering in 2017. Although, during those cruises the Saga was screened in the theatre.

Stateroom TV Channel Guide

Below are channel lists from the Disney Fantasy (June 2016) and Disney Wonder (May 2016). For the sake of keeping things simple, I am going to stick with channel guides based on ship class. There could very well be differences between the Magic & Wonder and Dream & Fantasy. Depending on the ships location some of the TV stations may not be available either because of poor satellite reception or they do not have the rights to show the channel. That’s right, we’ve been in ports where Disney owned ESPN is not available due to broadcast rights. Additionally, you may be able to request other stations in the bars as they have access to additional channels not available in the stateroom. This is a common occurrence during big sporting events like the Olympics, Super Bowl, MLB World Series, NBA Playoffs, NCAA March Madness and World Cup to name a few for SEO purposes!

We really enjoy the on-demand option on the Dream and Fantasy. Just wish they could update the Magic and Wonder with the same system.

If they didn’t do it during the Magic’s re-imagination, I doubt they will do it on the Wonder this fall. It would be nice if I was wrong, but I thought I remember hearing why they didn’t back in 2013. I know they didn’t put in magical portholes because of space and having to add more wiring, or at least that is what was stated.

We just left the Dream and were disappointed to see that the only on demand cartoons were the new Japanese Manga type Mickey cartoons. Our boys always enjoyed the classic Mickey,Donald, Goofy ones from the 40s and 50s in past cruises. These new ones are very strange.

Jenny, we too miss the “classic” Disney cartoons. The new ones have their place, but personally, not at the cost of the true classics.

I really miss the availability of ABC Family (now Freeform) shows. Sometime last year, they took the loop channel off the classic ships. And now I see that it’s not in your on-demand list for Dream/Fantasy. 🙁 I’ve enjoyed catching some new-to-me shows and even ended up buying seasons on iTunes to watch the rest of the episodes. It would be nice to have the ABC shows back in loop/on-demand as well to have some more options, particularly on the longer sailings. I don’t cruise to watch tv, but I enjoy having the tv on when I wind down at night or get going in the morning.

I’m actually disappointed they removed “Walt: The Man Behind the Myth” it seems odd that Disney would remove the only documentary they had in their line up about the man that started it all. Here’s hoping they atleast replace it with last year’s PBS special on Walt.

Where is the ABC feed from? I’ve been on Carnival cruises where the network feeds came out of Miami and those came in handy when it came to planning for the weather when we got back

DCL used to print up a list of movies being looped on tv and the channels and start times. On the wonder April 2017 there was no tv channel guide to the movies. Guest services said they do not have a typed one or know how to get that info. On the TV we could not see the name or description of the movie playing or find the start times. The menu and info buttons on the remote did nothing to help. So we would see “some” movie playing -not knowing the name, or when to catch the beginning. Only if we happened to check a tv channel after a movie ended and before its next start time did the screen show the movie’s info and start times. Does anyone know if this info is somwhere? Seems like a poor system! Thanks!

Nancy, this is the way it is on the classic ships. Unless you can get someone from guest services to provide a list of stateroom movies you are on your own trying to figure it out.

I used the Apple Vision Pro for 1 month — here's the truth

It’s pretty wild to think that I’ve already been using the Apple Vision Pro for more than a month. Since doing my initial Vision Pro review , there have been some changes to the headset experience via new apps and software upgrades on Apple’s end, as well as some features I'm surprised that I found myself using more than others.

Let’s talk about what I've learned in the last month.

Biggest difference over one month? New apps

The biggest difference of my Vision Pro experience from the start through now is the amount of Vision Pro apps that have been added. I’m asking myself less “What can I do with this thing?” There’s now more than 1,000 Vision Pro apps, and these are some of the ones I’ve been using most.

TikTok for Vision Pro is designed from the ground up for the Vision Pro and lets you browse videos that float in front of your view. It’s easy to pull up comments and you can add your own via the headset's floating keyboard.

Splitscreen is probably my favorite Vision Pro app so far because it answers one of my biggest complaints about using my Mac inside the headset. This app gives you a second desktop to go along with Apple’s own Virtual Display feature so you can do some serious multitasking. The only bummer is that the extr desktop is 1080p and not 4K like Apple’s. 

BlackBox for Vision Pro is a very cool game because it lets you solve puzzles by poking puzzles and capturing objects in front of you. The game itself is not as addicting as others i’ve tried, but it shows what’s possible with various gestures. I could see myself swinging a lightsaber in Vision Pro and doing a force push, for example. Disney, get on that.

Favorite use case?

My favorite thing to do with the Vision Pro is watch shows and movies — including 3D movies. While it’s cool how Apple’s Immersive Video format literally puts you in the room with Alicia Keys or on the top of a mountain with an adventurer, 3D movies are here right now.

Apple has more than 150 3D movies you can watch through Apple TV+, from Dune and Avatar to The Super Mario Brothers. And the Disney Plus app has close to 50 3D movies of its own. I got sucked in watching Avengers: Infinity War, and could argue the level of depth that beats the movie theater, especially for major action scenes.

Even if you’re not into 3D, you’ll enjoy watching shows and movies through the Vision Pro. I watched Oppenheimer and it looked amazing, while The Last of Us was somehow even more immersive as Ellie tried to escape the clutches of an evil preacher with a building burning all around them. Needless to say, I needed to take a break after that. 

Least favorite use case?

Despite promises that the Vision Pro will make you more productive, I don’t think it’s the game changer I wanted it to be. I admit that it’s cool to pin various windows around your space. And at least when I’m working from home, I find myself more engaged and focused when I work in the Vision Pro with my MacBook Pro 14-inch desktop floating in front of me and Slack off to one side and Apple Music off to another.

But there’s some things that keep pulling me out of my comfort zone. For one, the Vision Pro is too heavy to wear for more than an hour or two while sitting up. That’s even if you switch from the solo knit band to the comfier dual loop band. I’d say this band is a must since it better balances the weight of the headset, but I don’t like wearing it because, frankly, it messes up my hair and I have a sensitive scalp.

In fact, I find that after a while I get a sore neck using the Vision Pro, and I feel some pressure around my eyes. And then there's carrying the Vision Pro back and forth. It adds a ton of weight to my bag to the point where I have to really think twice about bringing the Apple Vision Pro home from work or into the office. 

What did I misjudge?

If there’s one thing I misjudged about the Vision Pro, it’s the battery. Yes, I obviously wish you didn’t have to schlepp one around. But when you’re using the Vision Pro you can just slip the battery into your pocket while you’re standing or just place it on the desk next to you when you’re sitting and plug it in for continuous power. It’s not as nearly as annoying as I thought it would be. 

I also misjudged the Environments. At first I thought they were just fancy desktops, but they do add a level of immersion to the Vision Pro that can literally take you to anywhere in the world. It’s not a replacement for real travel, of course, but I really like that third-party apps are doing their own Environments, like The Iron Throne room in the Max app and The Avengers Tower in the Disney Plus app. 

What’s still missing? 

In terms of what’s missing from Apple Vision Pro, I’d say the lack of a Netflix app is still a big absence. You technically can get to Netflix through Safari, but it’s not optimal, and you can’t download things to watch when you’re not on Wi-Fi.

The bigger missing ingredient is Google. There’s no YouTube , no Gmail and no Google Doc and no Google Meet, which are all services I use daily. Yes, I can access these services through the MacBook Virtual Display feature, but I still can’t attend meetings through Google Meet using my Digital Persona. 

Speaking of which, it’s nice that I can use my Persona to attend meetings and it’s impressive that it can mimic my blinks and smirks, but it’s still creepy. And I don’t know how much better this feature is going to get once it exits beta. How many other people will accept this as a normal video call, especially for business, shrug

Vision Pro after 1 month: Bottom line

When I first tried Vision Pro, I summed it up in a few words: Amazing, immersive and pricey. I stand by those words, but now that I’ve been using it for a month, I’d add three more: entertaining, heavy and a bit lonely. 

At $3,500, this is still a tough sell for most, but I do think the Vision Pro is paving its own path in the mixed-reality headset category. Not everyone is ready to come along for the ride, and that’s OK. For me, personally, I’m excited to see where Apple and developers take this next when it comes to spatial games and also reimagining how we watch sports. 

Even if you can't afford one or just aren’t ready to commit to the world of spatial computing, i don’t blame you. But you owe it to yourself to try the Vision Pro at an Apple Store — or borrow one from a friend — to get a taste of what the future is like.

My first cruise was a 7-day disappointment. Even worse, it left me feeling sick long after touching dry land.

I took my first-ever cruise in February and spent a week sailing around the Eastern Caribbean on the Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas .

Although I was hesitant to dive headfirst into a weeklong cruise, I figured a few days of sunshine in the middle of Minnesota winter would do me good.

Plus, cruises are as popular as ever — and I was curious to see if they actually lived up to the hype.

Well, my vacation wasn't so sunny after all, and I have zero desire to book another cruise.

The weather was awful — and we had to evacuate our first port

It rained on five of the seven days of my cruise, including all three port days.

So, we scrapped our plans to visit beautiful beaches on St. Thomas and St. Maarten and instead slogged through puddles to check out local shops.

We also had to evacuate early on our first port day at Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas due to an incoming storm.

My friend and I got in a couple of hours of cloudy beach time that day, but we headed back to the ship when it started sprinkling.

On our way back, Royal Caribbean announced we were leaving the island early. I appreciate the cruise putting our safety first, but I was still bummed.

We had unusually rough seas throughout the entire cruise

Having never been on a cruise, I had no idea what to expect in terms of motion and whether I'd get sea sick .

My doctor prescribed a scopolamine patch as a precaution to prevent sea sickness, but I had a negative reaction to it and had to remove it. Still, I figured I'd be fine since Wonder of the Seas is a large ship, and I'd heard you don't feel as much movement on larger ships .

Well, I felt a lot of movement. And I wasn't alone.

Because we experienced some rougher seas, we felt more motion on the ship than is typical, according to conversations with seasoned fellow cruisers on board and comments from the captain.

One night it was so bad that many of us had trouble walking in a straight line down the hallway. Thankfully, other than a couple of hours of nausea I attribute to too much wine and not enough food, I didn't get sick to my stomach.

But that weird sensation of swaying and rocking got to me.

Motion sickness followed me home

Unfortunately, I could still feel some rocking and swaying after we disembarked. Even after returning home, the feeling didn't go away.

My brain knew I was on solid ground, but I felt like I was still on the cruise ship battling rough waves.

As it turns out, I'd developed "land sickness," also known as mal de débarquement syndrome , where you feel as though you're still swaying on the ship once you get off.

Although it's somewhat rare , it's a form of reverse motion sickness that can last for months or even years after a cruise (or other triggering event).

So far, anti-nausea medication and ginger ale haven't helped much.

As I sit and write this over two weeks later, I'm still rocking, swaying, and bobbing. Although I'm slowly getting better, it's definitely not fun.

I'm avoiding cruises from now on

I had some great laughs with friends on board despite the rough seas and lack of sunshine. A lot of what I experienced probably isn't the norm and maybe I was just unlucky.

But considering I wasn't even sailing during hurricane season in the Caribbean, I don't want to roll the dice again and try another sailing.

One bad experience culminating with motion sickness on dry land is enough to make me want to avoid any cruises in the future.

By now, you have likely read a great deal about the experience of using Apple's Vision Pro mixed-reality headset , which the company is positioning as the future of computing. There have been countless unboxings, teardowns , reviews, and even reports of damaged front screens . I encourage you to read my colleague Lauren Goode's excellent write-up about watching movies —and crying—with the headset on.

I've spent time with the Apple Vision Pro for almost a month now and dipped my toes into its many capabilities, from light gaming to late-night TV bingeing in bed. I even watched a 70-mm screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey in a theater and compared it to the experience in the Vision Pro to help determine the quality of the micro-OLED displays in Apple's headset. The optics are excellent, but Apple's technological prowess can't recreate the experience of watching the movie in an actual theater; the anxiety you feel from the Kubrickian dread pales to the physical effects of a theater's booming sound system and the build-up of electrified tension from fellow moviegoers.

My primary use for the Vision Pro has been work. It's the device's spatial computing features that appeal to me the most. After all, I'm the kind of guy to bring a portable monitor with me if I'm going to work out of a coffee shop. I love extra screens ! The idea of a singular device that can replicate my at-home workstation and add multiple virtual screens, wherever I am, excited me the most.

But just the other day, after taking what felt like twice the amount of time I'd typically need to finish a task, only to have Safari freeze and refuse to let me move the virtual browser windows back to their original position, I peeled off the headset and said out loud, “I can't do this.”

I also can't get this quote from Steve Jobs out of my head as I've had the Vision Pro in my periphery over the last few weeks: “You've got to start with the customer experience and work backward to the technology. You can't start with the technology and try to figure out where you're going to try and sell it." The Vision Pro feels like Apple did exactly that—it started with a fantastic piece of technology and is now trying to figure out a way to market it.

Tunnel Vision

My flight to Barcelona a few weeks ago to cover the Mobile World Congress was a perfect time to test the Vision Pro's capabilities for work. I mustered up the courage to don the headset in public—I'm thankful no one was seated next to me on the plane—and I placed Apple's Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad on the tray table. Why Apple didn't bother to make a custom keyboard and mouse combo for the Vision Pro (that didn't also use Lightning for charging) boggles my mind.

I got incredibly frustrated the first few minutes in the air. The Vision Pro needs to go into Travel Mode when you're in a plane (or even a train), otherwise, the sensors get confused and it doesn't know where to place virtual apps in the space you're in because you're moving so fast. The headset is supposed to automatically detect when you're flying and offer a prompt to turn it on, but it didn't for me. So it became a game of trying to move through the interface fast enough to get to the Control Center and turn it on before everything disappeared and I got the “tracking failed” notification. It took me about 10 tries, but I finally did it. I felt like Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow , learning from my past mistakes each time my world restarted.

With Travel Mode on, I was ready. I paid for in-flight Wi-Fi and connected the Vision Pro. I plugged in the battery pack to the under-seat outlet for continuous power so I didn't have to worry about the headset's paltry two-hour run time. I didn't turn on an “Environment” to block out the world around me because I didn't want to ignore the cabin attendants in case they came around. In the Vision Pro, I had one Safari browser front and center with multiple tabs, and I had another one off to the left to use for research and reference. On the right, I had Slack and Telegram so I could keep an eye on work and personal messages.

As a 6'4" guy, I have wide shoulders and typically find it nearly impossible to write on a laptop in an airplane seat. It's just too cramped. But there I was, typing a nearly 2,000-word story on the Vision Pro . Seeing all those virtual screens without taking up much space was amazing.

The problem? All of my virtual apps had a slight jitter to them, almost like they were vibrating in place, which wasn't great. I had the Apple Notes app off to the side so I could add any stream-of-consciousness thoughts about my Vision Pro experience, and if you read it in succession, it kind of feels like lab notes you'd find in a video game right before the person who wrote it was killed by some technological invention. “Stress on temple. Neck is hurting. Just kinda wanna take it off.”

That was after roughly two hours in the Vision Pro. The weight of the headset was starting to wear down on me, but I persisted for a total of five hours. I was also annoyed that, periodically, all the virtual screens would disappear, and I had to reopen and place all of the apps in their respective positions. Worse yet, at around the two-hour mark, visionOS stopped working—the cursor disappeared and eye tracking wasn't registering anything. The only fix was to disconnect the power and reconnect it. I noticed the headset was very hot (I didn't feel the heat on my face), and I've been able to replicate the experience where the interface gets stuttery and locks up after prolonged use.

I have since continued to work periodically in the Vision Pro after coming back from Barcelona. One continuous point of frustration is the eye tracking. It's such an impressive feature, but there are so many moments when I'm looking at an icon or the keys on the virtual keyboard and visionOS thinks I am looking at the key just to the right of what I'm actually staring at. Cue a game of me trying to stare harder at the object and even tilting my head a bit to see if that helps (it weirdly does). If I stared any harder I think I'd unlock telepathy.

There's a feature called Mac Virtual Display that lets you bring your MacBook's screen into the virtual space, and then you can add other visionOS apps and windows around it. It's super cool in theory, but because you can't interact with the MacBook screen with your fingers, the floating display feels disjointed in the otherwise completely interactive environment. I didn't end up using it much.

In general, I feel a little slower when I work in the Vision Pro. A part of this is the iPadOS-esque cursor that just doesn't feel as precise and functional as a standard cursor on macOS or Windows. I also don't like how much I have to move my head around to look at all these virtual screens. Typically, with my ultrawide monitor and vertical monitor setup, a simple glance is all I need to see the other screen. But on the Vision Pro with several apps open, my head is on a constant swivel. Pushing the apps further back within the virtual space helps but doesn't solve this problem.

The finger gesture that doubles as a mouse click is smart and largely works well, but there are times when the Vision Pro thinks my fingers are making this gesture when I'm typing, causing the whole browser window to scroll up and down. Speaking of, if you put your hands on your lap while watching a movie, they just stay present even when you dial the environment around you to block out the world. It was weird watching a show and seeing my hands flickering at the bottom of the screen.

Future Shock

The biggest problem with the Vision Pro is that you have to put it on your head . My friend likened it to having a gym that's only a block or two away. I know it's right there, but I can't motivate myself enough to make the short trip. On the rare occasions that I do, I have a pleasant time. Similarly, every first thought about the Vision Pro is, “Oh but I have to put it on.” This barrier is enough for me to just forgo the headset and use my computer. That's without mentioning having to deal with the wire and battery pack when you move around.

Worse is when the doorbell goes off while you're in the Vision Pro and you have to suddenly take it off to run downstairs and answer the door. Contrary to what Apple might want, I find it odd to just keep wearing the headset as I move through my home.

Just the other day I was installing a smart thermostat and I thought it would be helpful to wear the headset and place the installation's video walkthrough in a virtual space next to the thermostat so I didn't have to keep going back to my phone. Then I thought about having to wear the Vision Pro and look through the passthrough screen, which sometimes resembles a 720p display. Oh and the fact that there's no official YouTube app yet (there is a third-party option ). I just watched the video on my phone instead.

My wife doesn't like it when I'm wearing the Vision Pro. She says it makes me “very unapproachable,” and even though Apple has a feature called EyeSight that simulates your eyes on the exterior screen of the headset, she says it's difficult to notice it. When she does, “It feels like I'm looking at your eyes through a screensaver.” I might be enjoying my time in the headset, but it's isolating for her.

I can go on and on. It's surprisingly bulky to stuff in a backpack, not to mention the travel case Apple sells is $199 and adds even more bulk. It's silly that the Zeiss prescription inserts cost so much, and that there's no way to set up a second user's profile in case someone else in the household wants to use it. (There's just a rudimentary guest mode.) I also don't love the faint glare on the lens that seems to only appear when you're watching a movie or show in a dark setting.

Most of all, I'm not sure about how Apple is positioning the Vision Pro. Should the future of computing be a bulky headset strapped to our heads that isolates us from the real world? Should I walk around my home capturing spatial video of my dog all the time? Or have conversations with my wife as she stares at my digital eyes? I am sure a loyal Apple and VR fanbase is loving every minute inside the Vision Pro, but I fear the simplest barrier of having to wear a bulky thing on the head is enough to put off the vast majority of consumers.

Yes, the Vision Pro is very much a first-gen product and one that's not really intended for the general public—it's more like a public developer kit. Naturally, components will get smaller, the technology will improve, and hopefully, the price will go down. The hardware is monumental, and the capabilities of the Vision Pro are incredibly impressive. But I think we are quite a ways away from the future Apple is envisioning.

The latest development came as Moscow launched air strikes on Kyiv and the western Ukrainian region of Lviv on Sunday, officials said, prompting neighbouring Poland's armed forces to activate aircraft to ensure airspace safety near the border. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app there were several explosions in the Ukrainian capital after air defence systems were engaged in repelling the attack.

Ukraine air defence forces destroyed about a dozen Russia-launched missiles over Kyiv and in the vicinity of the capital, Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said on Telegram.

Preliminary information showed no casualties or major damage as a result of the attacks, he said.

Russia has been pounding Ukraine for days in attacks portrayed by Moscow as revenge for Ukrainian attacks during its recent presidential election. "For the third pre-dawn morning this week, all of Ukraine is under an air alert and has been advised to seek shelter," U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink posted on X early on Sunday.

Samsung's 2024 tv lineup is still missing one big thing.

Samsung makes some of the best TVs out there. With the company being able to make the best screens, it's only natural that its TVs are going to turn out great as well. Samsung's TVs are available in all sizes and price points, and they're a great addition to any living room. Now, Samsung has just launched its 2024 range of TVs, and while they look amazing, we can't help but notice that they're lacking a few features that we would've hoped Samsung would've figured out by now.

Samsung has just announced a bunch of new TV models at various price points. What they do have in common is that they all have at least a 4K resolution, with some of them going up to 8K. We have Samsung's Neo QLED TVs, regular OLED TVs, as well as the "Lifestyle" models that replicate a picture frame hung up on a wall. The full list of new models is below.

While the lineup certainly looks pretty decent (and expensive), Samsung's TVs still suffer from a fatal flaw—they lack Dolby Vision . It's a standard feature on expensive TVs from other brands, and Samsung's refusal to support it on its TVs is getting more and more complicated as time goes by. A lot of movies/shows these days are calibrated for Dolby Vision, and when you try to watch them on a non-DV TV, it might look too bright or too dark.

Long live the (former) Crown Prince!

In the series finale of Netflix’s queer romance “Young Royals,” Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) officially abdicates the throne as the future king of Sweden, effectively handing the crown to his cousin/sometimes rival August (Malte Gårdinger). While Wilhelm’s decision has seismic implications for the royal family and the country, it played out in a quieter mother-son moment between Wilhelm and Queen Kristina (Pernilla August), as they drove away from his now-shuttered boarding school Hillerska.

“I think that moment is monumental,” Ryding tells Variety . “What he is doing, it is almost Biblical. Because when he has this calm and collected conversation with his mother, he is trying to say what he has insinuated many times before — that he is not the next king of Sweden. When he finally does that, it helps him so much more than just in his relationship with Simon.”

While it may not have been his true motivation, the personal declaration does serve as a grand romantic gesture when an unburdened Wilhelm chases after Simon’s car –– on foot! –– to share the good news. As if pulled right out of a rom-com, the two smile, shed a few tears and share a kiss before literally riding off into the sunset with each other, Simon’s sister Sarah (Frida Argento) and her best friend Felice (Nikita Uggla).

Despite that happy ending, Rudberg says Simon was initially hesitant to stop the car for Wilhelm. “But I think Simon, somewhere in his little heart, he feels hope. He is still in love with Wilhelm, and I like to think that he says, ‘Hit me one more time.’”

Let’s start with the most important question: Edvin, how much did you have to run to get the perfect take for that final scene?

Edvin Ryding: Too much! It was so much running. And we had to reshoot it, because I was running in these fancy shoes, so it was not easy to do, and my calves were hurting for like a week after it. But it was nice, because I got to have a full Tom Cruise moment, running at full speed. It was a lot of fun.

Omar Rudberg: And he didn’t even warm up! I think he just went from 0 to 100. It was crazy.

Ryding: I’m lucky I didn’t sprain something, actually.

We have seen so many romantic movies with that big profession of love, where the man runs after the woman or the woman goes after the man. Here, you both get to part of your own big rom-com moment that is not only between two men, but two young men. What was it like filming this?

Rudberg: I mean, it is a blessing. It has been one of my big dreams since I was a kid. I wanted to become an actor, but I didn’t really know how or if I even could act. And we always saw these loving and romantic movies, and it was so amazing. But then you realize those moments are kind of fake in a way! But my inner child would be very happy to see me doing this. It’s just a blessing to be a part of anything that means a lot to people.

Ryding: That specific scene — I know it’s corny, but I love it. It is amazing. If you put an x-ray over it, you see the substance that is in and underneath it. The dialogue they are having about how, “I told my mother this, and I needed this to be said,” and Simon is asking if he did it for him and Wilhelm saying “No, I did it for me.” It is everything Simon needs to hear in order for them to work, finally. So regardless of whether it is corny or not, the 360-degree shot and the music and the kissing and all of that is fun to shoot. But at the end, what you are watching is beautiful, and it has so much substance.

Rudberg: I also feel like there are things that are cornier than “Young Royals.” It has been so traumatic up to this point, so I feel like we can be a little corny at the end.

Edvin, you say in the “Young Royals Forever” documentary (also now streaming on Netflix) that you make playlists for your characters. You try to know them inside and out from day one. So what will giving up being king mean for Wilhelm?

Ryding: I think that moment is monumental. What he is doing, it is almost Biblical. Because when he has this calm and collected conversation with his mother, he is trying to say what he has insinuated many times before, that he is not the next king of Sweden. When he finally does that, it helps him so much more than just in his relationship with Simon. He grows so much as a human being in that moment and he embarks on this new chapter of adulthood, even though he is only 17.

Do you have an idea of what you would like to see him do with this newfound future?

Ryding: When I wrote down who I think he was during Season 1, it was very vivid and detailed about, like, what his dreams would have been and what his interests are. I always envisioned him as this person who wasn’t allowed to have dreams or interests fully. But now, I see him as a very creative person who just needs the space for it. I’ve always seen him as a person interested in fashion, so if I have to say something that would be my prediction for him.

But on the other hand, I feel very happy about the fact that the fans are the future script writers of the show. We are leaving these characters on a note of hope, and I hope the audience trusts that these characters go on to have a healthy life. Our fans have wild imaginations, so I trust that they will come up with brilliant stories for these characters in the future.

Omar, this big romantic climax comes as Simon is potentially leaving behind this life he’s built in Bjärstad. So what does it mean for him to be pulled back into it all?

Rudberg: In this last season, I felt like Simon was fighting with himself, because he is very in love with Wilhelm and he wants to be with him. But he sees the hurting that Wilhelm is going through and that Wilhelm’s family is going through, and that hurts him. Not only that, Simon is fighting with himself because, is he willing to literally lose himself just to be with Wilhelm?

But then he sees Wilhelm running after the car, and I feel like his first thoughts were: “Not again. We’ve already been through this. We’ve already broken up and we are on our way to living a normal life. Why are you running after me right now?” But I think Simon, somewhere in his little heart, he feels hope. He is still in love with Wilhelm, and I like to think that he says, “Hit me one more time.” He decides to walk out and see what Wilhelm has to say, and maybe it will be the last time we ever speak. But then Wilhelm said the right words.

Simon already said his goodbyes in the form of a song that he wrote and recorded for Wilhelm’s birthday. Omar, what was it like to record another song for the show, after the fan-favorite “Simon’s Song” from Season 2, which got a surprising reprise in the finale as well?

Ryding: Well, actually, we hated it from the beginning.

My first thoughts were that this was really cringe. Like, would Simon really write something like this? Would he really use these words? So it took some time for me to like it, because we didn’t even have the time to rewrite it since we were shooting it the next day.

Ryding: I was on you to tell them to change it. I told you, “You have to tell them! You have to refuse! Refuse!”

Rudberg: Yeah, I had played it for you, and you thought the same thing, right? It was just cringe.

Ryding: I was like, “Why would anyone be moved by this?” I also think that the way we are in that process, we are always critical about what is happening to Wilhelm and Simon. But we just gave into this feeling of trust that this was right, and it is going to pan out.

Rudberg: We had to trust [co-creator] Lisa [Ambjörn] and everyone who was involved.

Ryding: That’s the beauty of this collaboration on the show, because we are able to talk about those kinds of things. And hearing it now, it’s beautiful coming from this 16-year-old boy.

Rudberg: Yeah, this is, like, Simon’s second or third song that he has ever written. But for me, the one who was going to sing it, it was very personal. Singing is very personal for me, and if I don’t vibe with something, I’m probably going to hate it so much. But I had to understand that this is Simon singing, not Omar singing. This is Simon’s writing, not mine. So we just did it.

That day, I didn’t know the lyrics, the melody, or the chords. I couldn’t play the keyboard, so I had to do it acapella, and I had this inner earpiece that is literally hidden in the scene where I can hear the demo. It was a whole hot mess. But now that I’ve seen the whole context of the season, it makes sense. You get that it is Simon writing in his room and from his heart. It is beautiful.

Touch has been Wilhelm and Simon’s form of intimacy since the beginning. How did you settle on that being their love language, and how has that evolved over the series by that final kiss?

Ryding: From the beginning as we were talking about their intimacy, the leading word was curiousness. They were discovering each other, and each other’s bodies and needs. We worked very closely with our director and Sara Arrhusius, our intimacy coordinator, on that. And when we were on set and experimenting with the choreography of those scenes, we realized it just looks beautiful. Them slowly trying to move each other, and even in the scenes that aren’t so intimate, that touch always finds its way through. It just felt very natural for them. We wanted to keep that through Season 1 and 2, and by Season 3, it needed to still be that playfulness and that need to discover and be curious. But also, the comfort because they have chosen each other. I think it is a very beautiful evolution of intimacy throughout the season.

Rudberg: Yes, it really was.

Ryding: Yeah, pretty much. We are always rehearsing or talking about these scenes beforehand, if there is a kiss or a proper sex scene. But at this point we know these characters so well, and we know the way they interact with each other intimately. So I remember shooting that final 360-degree kiss felt very intuitive.

Rudberg: It was not really hard to do the kissing. It was always the energy and the emotion during that final scene and that kiss. This is finally when they get to be together for real, and Wilhelm chooses being free. It’s also the last scene of the series, so I was nervous about how I was going to do it. What do I feel? It was a lot of feelings in that scene.

Ryding: But it was nice for both of us to finally just let go and let it happen.

Rudberg: I was in the car, and I told our director I didn’t know how I was going to do this. I don’t really know what emotion to feel because it was also our last day of shooting. So then, right after one of our last takes, she comes to me in the car and whispers in my ear, “Just remember this is the last time you will ever shoot for ‘Young Royals,’” and then she was just like, “Bye!” I was like, “That’s not helpful!” But I just sat with that, and it worked.

Ryding: It did the trick!
