Nebraska’s New Tourism Slogan Is Hilariously Honest

Nebraska’s new tourism campaign relies on self-deprecating humor to attract visitors.

Just a few months after Vilnius, Lithuania, unveiled its cheeky new tourism slogan— “Vilnius: The G-Spot of Europe” —Nebraska has followed up with an even funnier tagline to draw tourism (and attention) to the state.

Instead of promoting itself as “Nebraska Nice” anymore, the Midwestern state announced its new slogan is “Honestly, It’s Not For Everyone” at the Nebraska Tourism Conference on Wednesday, October 17.

“It was important . . . to be true to who we are and honest about what we are not,” Deb Loseke, Nebraska Tourism Commission Chair, said in a statement . While the slogan is brutally honest, the resulting ad campaign attempts to use that self-deprecating humor to change the perception that Nebraska is a boring place where there’s nothing to do.

In one of the new ads, two people are seen hiking across the unusual rock formations in Toadstool Geologic Park in the northwestern part of the state along with the phrase “Famous for our flat, boring landscape.” Another ad (seen at the top of this article) features three groups of people “tanking” down a river. “In Nebraska, we believe that only boring people get bored,” it reads. “So we invent our own fun. Like when we realized that a livestock tank would float, and thought, ‘It’s a boat.’”

So far, it looks like the campaign is working. Within one day of the announcement, the Nebraska Tourism Commission says they’ve received an “overwhelming” number of requests for T-shirts with the slogan on it. They say the resulting media coverage has reached more than 384 million people already. But will people actually go to check it out in person? Maybe not everyone, but tanking certainly looks like a lot of fun.

Nebraska  made national headlines  this week by announcing a new tourism campaign that takes a self-deprecating view of the state’s reputation.

The new slogan?

“Nebraska: Honestly, It’s Not For Everyone.â€

Yes, seriously.

State Tourism Director John Ricks  told Omaha.com  that since Nebraska is often ranked as the “least likely state†that tourists plan to visit, “the marketing campaign needed to be different.”

This news got us thinking … what would other states’ slogans be if they were going to get super real and self-deprecating? Taking a page from Nebraska’s book, we came up with 10 updated, painfully honest slogans for other states.

Nebraska’s tourism board masters the art of the underwhelming slogan

Farmers are staring down a tough spot.

We live in overwhelming times. The news is fake, politics is a tawdry 24-hour reality show, brands act like our friends, and our friends act like brands.

Blessedly, the great state of Nebraska wants no part of this. In a new tourism slogan announced this week, the Cornhusker State wants visitors to know that, “Honestly, it’s not for everyone.”

The self-aware slogan will replace the state’s “Nebraska Nice” moniker, which was retired in 2015. The new message is intended to be honest about Nebraska’s selling points, as well as its shortcomings.

For the past four years, Nebraska has ranked last when it comes to states that travelers most want to visit, according to research from travel marketing research firm MMGY Global. As the chair of the tourism commission said in a statement , “We discovered that we can’t offer something to everyone — but to those that we can, this campaign speaks to their sense of adventure and discovering what we as Nebraskans are all about.”

So what is Nebraska about? Well, it’s famous for its “flat, boring landscape,” corn and wheat fields, as well as “a way of embracing the not-so-obvious bits of life.” And now, it seems, Nebraska can add self-deprecating humor to that list. It certainly stands out in a field of tourism slogans that are not known for their subtlety. Greece’s “ Greece All Time Classic ” reads like something devised for a search engine; Vilnius’ perplexing “ G-spot of Europe ” campaign certainly got attention, but more for its absurdity than cleverness; and Honduras’s “Everything is here” slightly beggars belief.

Indeed, Nebraska’s new slogan—which will roll out in out-of-state markets in 2019—recalls great, underwhelming missives of lore. Slogans that don’t come with the lofty and aspirational aims of iconic brands like Nike’s “Just do it” or Apple’s “Think Different,” but rather that promise to do no more or no less than what they can. The iconic American “Beef: It’s what for dinner” comes to mind, as does the famous British slogan “Does what is says on the tin,” which has over time become more famous than the brand of deck sealant it was originally created to promote.

These slogans would hardly garner Don Draper’s seal of approval, but in a world where we’re constantly being oversold, being undersold feels like a breath of fresh, Nebraskan air.

Recently, redditor u/ ElisaBelloo asked , "In your travels, which city was the biggest letdown?" Travelers from all over the world took to the thread and were refreshingly (and sometimes brutally) honest about the travel destinations that didn't quite live up to their expectations. So, here are 15 popular vacation spots that — according to fellow travelers — actually might not be worth the money and hype:

'Honest-to-Goodness Indiana' too wholesome? Wait and see, officials say

Restart Your Engines is out, after a memorable eight-year run.

Indiana will now promote itself to tourists — minus a verb — with the slogan "Honest-to-Goodness Indiana."

And the early reaction is: decidedly mixed.

While state officials described the new slogan as "forward-looking" and representative of the whole state (unlike Restart, with its borrowing of the famous Indianapolis 500 driver command), some of the instant analysis on social media Wednesday was, honest to goodness, a bit cutting.

"In the true Gomer Pyle tradition, eh?," wrote one commentator on IndyStar.com's Facebook page. "Can't we think of something that reflects 'North of the Ohio River' and not the South of 1816?"

Wrote another: "Golly gee-wilikers Pa! Can we really go to Indiana? It's so WHOLESOME."

Jake Oakman, spokesman for the Indiana Office of Tourism Development, which paid $100,000 for the slogan and a soon-to-start branding campaign that will run through summer, aimed to point out to the early critics that the new four-word slogan isn't meant to stand alone. Wait until the billboards and the print ads and the TV commercials come out, Oakman suggested, and the new slogan will take on a fuller meaning.

"The initial reaction that it's too 'Mayberry' or whatnot, that can be tamped down when put in context with the whole branding campaign," Oakman said.

And besides, the tourism spokesman said, "You're never going to get 100 percent approval for anything."

The new slogan is the result of a monthslong search for the right words to market Indiana. The effort was headed by the Indianapolis marketing agency Williams Randall. The final choice of the new slogan was made by a panel of marketing and tourism types and state officials, Oakman said.

Mark Newman, executive director of the tourism office, said the slogan launches a new era of promotion of the state. "'Honest to Goodness Indiana' is reflective of the entire state, and for the first time in many years, our brand incorporates all regions of Indiana," he said in a statement.

Tourism is a big moneymaker for the state.

Travel, tourism and hospitality ranks as the sixth-largest industry in the state. It's responsible for 140,000 jobs and $10 billion in revenue, according to a December tourism report.

The new slogan will appear on billboard, radio and TV advertising, focused primarily on Indianapolis and St. Louis at first, and in regional and national magazine advertisements, including ones in Midwest Living, Food Network Magazine and Cooking Light.

The advertising will feature Indiana residents and businesses, such as Roanoke restaurant Joseph Decuis and Borden-based Huber Winery. Indiana's claim as the place where Abraham Lincoln spent much of his youth also is featured.

Tourism slogans tend to evoke controversy, sometimes because people get attached to the old one. When Colorado came out with a new tourism branding campaign and logo last year (a green, snow-capped triangle with the letters CO), tourism leaders at first "lambasted" the new effort, concerned that it would replace Colorado's longtime "Come To Life" tourism pitch, the Denver Post reported.

There's no need for people to get too upset with tourism slogans, when what really matters is not sloganizing, but people's perception of a place, said Roger Brooks, a Renton, Wash., tourism and community development expert.

"Do you go to Disneyland or Disney World because their slogan is 'The Happiest Place on Earth?' Of course not. We go there because of our perception of it," Brooks says in a video he did on branding.

McKenze Rogers, manager of client services for Williams Randall, which has offices Downtown, shrugged off the early criticism.

"We are confident in the new brand. We are focused solely on moving forward."

Oakman said tourism officials knew they didn't want to launch their new tourism campaign using the 8-year-old Restart Your Engines slogan.

"It had definitely run out of gas, if you want to restate the metaphor," he said.

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.
