About the phantom of the opera on broadway, video & photos.

The longest-running show in Broadway history, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera debuted in 1988, winning seven Tony Awards® including Best Musical. Based on Gaston Leroux’s horror novel, it tells the enticing story of the Phantom, who haunts the stage of the Paris Opera and subsequently falls in love with a beautiful young soprano. Audiences are in for a thrilling night of spectacle and romance, accompanied by Broadway’s most unforgettable score.

Know Before You Go

Both romantic and scary, The Phantom of the Opera is a thrilling night of theater with grand emotions. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score, with its beloved signature song “Music of the Night,” sets the mood, but you may also find yourself humming the gorgeous period costumes and simple yet grand sets (even the famous chandelier, which probably falls slower than you’d expect, is a thrill).

phantom of the opera tour 2022

"Phantom rules! It remains as fresh and spectacular as ever. Andrew Lloyd Webber's score has a visceral tug more than almost any score written in the past 20 years. Beautiful and romantic, I have to tip my hat: The Phantom of the Opera has aged divinely." NY1 Roma Torre

phantom of the opera tour 2022

"Phantom still delivers the goods! Judging by sheer invention, emotional punch and onstage talent, the venerable blockbuster still beats out almost all of the shippersnappers currently on Broadway. Maria Bjornson's flamboyant gothic design and Harold Prince's fantastical staging still have the gleam of finely polished professionalism." The New York Times Jason Zinoman
"Phantom is still wonderful and isn't showing its age one bit! The chandelier still falls on cue and the show still rises to the top of all the musicals ever to appear on Broadway. I hope I listen to the music of the night forever!" WOR Radio David Richardson
"It may be possible to have a terrible time at The Phantom of the Opera, but you'll have to work at it. Only a terminal prig would let the avalanche of pre-opening publicity poison his enjoyment of this show, which usually wants nothing more than to shower the audience with fantasy and fun, and which often succeeds, at any price. The physical production, Andrew Bridge's velvety lighting included, is a tour de force throughout–as extravagant of imagination as of budget." The New York Times Frank Rich

Frequently Asked Questions

Grand opera and lush romance might not be their cup of tea. And the Phantom is a frightening guy. There are old-fashioned scare moments throughout—a dead corpse plunging from a noose, shrieking-for-their-lives ballerinas, that disfigured face... Such sights will either send your kid burying their face in your arm or thinking it’s the coolest show in town.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

"The Phantom of the Opera" cast holds hands onstage.

You only have a few more opportunities to see the iconic chandelier drop on Broadway.

That’s because Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical “Phantom of the Opera” is leaving the Great White Way when it officially closes on April 15, 2023.

Yes, after over 10,000 performances and seven Tony Awards, Christine (Emilie Kouatchou) and the masked Phantom (Ben Crawford) will take their final bows at the Majestic Theatre .

We know what you’re thinking, too.

With so few shows remaining on the legendary production’s calendar, which is the best one to go to?

That’s a great question and one we’d love to dive into.

At the time of publication, we found “Phantom of the Opera” Broadway tickets going for as low as $182 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Take that with a grain of salt, though — prices regularly fluctuate, and you may be able to snag a last-minute deal if you continually refresh the show’s calendar .

Now, here’s everything else you need to know about the long-running show with the mysterious masked man.

“Phantom of the Opera” 2022-23 Broadway schedule

A complete calendar including all upcoming show dates, start times and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found below.

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

“Phantom of the Opera” cast

Although we don’t know much about the “Phantom” himself, here’s what we do know about the actors that play the lead roles onstage.

Ben Crawford (The Phantom) has appeared in five Broadway shows prior to his “Phantom” run. You may have also seen him in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Shrek The Musical,” “Big Fish,” “Les Misérables,” and “On the Twentieth Century.” He assumed the role of The Phantom on April 16, 2018, making the final show his five-year anniversary.

Emilie Kouatchou (Christine) is making her Broadway debut in “Phantom.” A University of Michigan graduate, she took over for Meghan Picerno on Jan. 25, 2022. Once cast, Kouatchou made history as the first Black actress to play Christine on Broadway.

Paul Adam Schaefer (Raoul) knows Phantom inside and out. As his bio alleges, “he has also played The Phantom more times than he can count.” Other notable screen credits include “FBI,” “Uncoupled” with Neil Patrick Harris, “Blacklist,” “Baker and the Beauty,” and “Law & Order,” to name just a few.

Raquel Suarez Groen (Carlotta) also made her Broadway debut with “Phantom.” In addition to many Off-Broadway productions, Groen is an accomplished Opera vocalist having won prizes at the Giulio Gari International Vocal Competition and Florida Grand Opera YPO Competition.

Maree Johnson (Madame Giry) rejoins the “Phantom” family after having played Madame Giry in the Sydney Harbour production of the show. In the past, she has also taken on the role of Christine in “Phantom” as well. Johnson received a Barrymore Award nomination for her work in “Passion.”

All cast members and their official bios can be found here .

Musicals on Broadway in 2023

After “Phantom” closes, here are five of the biggest shows that will be aiming to take its throne as Broadway’s most tenured.

•  “The Lion King”

•  “Chicago”

•  “Wicked”

•  “Hamilton”

•  “The Book of Mormon”

About The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway

The Phantom of the Opera musical continues to entice crowds with the music of the night at the Majestic Theatre . It's considered the most iconic piece of work from composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, with Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe also creating the musical. Moreover, The Phantom of the Opera in New York is the longest-running musical in Broadway history, having played the Majestic since 1988. It became the first musical ever to play 10,000 Broadway performances in 2012.

What is The Phantom of the Opera about?

Based on a 1910 Gothic horror novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway tells of the treacherous love triangle centered on Christine Daaé, the rising star at the Paris Opera. The Phantom, a mysterious man who dwells in the opera house's underground and hides a hideous deformity behind a mask, battles with Christine's childhood sweetheart Raoul for Christine's affections. The production boasts a plethora of iconic moments, most notably the infamous chandelier that crashes down from the ceiling of the auditorium. There's also the splendorous dance sequence "Masquerade," the descent into the Phantom's underground lair during the title song, and the romantic rooftop ballad "All I Ask of You."

The musical had its world premiere in London in 1986, winning the Olivier Award for Best Musical. When The Phantom of the Opera transferred to Broadway in 1988, the show won Best Musical that year at the Tonys, too, in addition to six other awards. It has been performed in dozens of countries worldwide.

A film adaptation of  The Phantom of the Opera  was released in December 2004, starring Gerard Butler in the title role. But the original musical is a Broadway must-see, as it has made countless audiences fall in love with the visual and aural grandeur of Broadway with costumes, songs, choreography, and more that are unmatched in splendor.

Opera Australia and the Really Useful Group In association with Cameron Mackintosh Present The New Production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s

The Phantom of the Opera

At arts centre melbourne, experience the phenomenon of one of the most successful musicals of all time, when cameron mackintosh’s new production of andrew lloyd webber’s legendary show comes to melbourne..

Hit after hit punctuates the thrilling score, from the stunning romance of ‘Music of the Night’, ‘Think of Me’ and ‘All I Ask of You’ to the splendid ‘Masquerade’ and brilliant title song.

Now, you can hear them all in a spectacular new production that has stunned critics across the United Kingdom and North America. It features new direction by Laurence Connor, new scenic design by Paul Brown, lighting design by Tony Award ® -winner Paule Constable, sound design by Mick Potter, new choreography by Scott Ambler and the original, Tony Award ® -winning costume design by Maria Björnson.

Overseen by Cameron Mackintosh and Matthew Bourne, the “eye-poppingly innovative” ( Australian Financial Review ) new staging includes many special effects, from the famous chandelier to the underground lake, and a large cast and orchestra. It “remains as visually ravishing as ever” ( The Age ), and “cannot fail to impress” ( Time Out ).

The Phantom haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House. He’s man and mystery, a deformed genius. And in Christine Daaé, he’s found his angel of music: the young woman he would make a star. But how many lives will he sacrifice to make the music of the night?

“Classics are classic for a reason. ★★★★★”

At an auction of opera memorabilia at the Paris Opera House, an old man, Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, bids for a strange musical box which seems to hold for him some special memory. The newly restored chandelier is revealed and we are swept back to the time of Raoul’s youth, when the chandelier hung in splendour from the dome of the Opera House.

A new opera, Hannibal, is in rehearsal. LeFèvre, manager of the Opera House, arrives and explains to the company that he is retiring. He introduces the new managers, André and Firmin. André asks the prima donna, Carlotta, to sing, but a sandbag falls suddenly from the flies, almost killing her. There are murmurs among the company that it must have been the work of ‘the ghost’. Carlotta storms out, leaving the new production without a star. The new managers learn that there have been too many accidents. Madame Giry, the ballet mistress, hands the managers a note from ‘the opera ghost’ demanding a salary and a free box at the opera. Meg, Madame Giry’s daughter, suggests to André and Firmin that her friend and fellow dancer Christine Daaé could take Carlotta’s place. Christine has been taking singing lessons, but is unable (or unwilling) to say from whom. The managers grant her an audition.

Audition and performance merge and, from the managers’ box, the young Raoul, patron of the Opera House, voices his enthusiasm for the new star. After the Gala, Meg asks Christine about her mysterious teacher, but Christine can only tell Meg that he is the Angel of Music whom her late father had always promised would one day visit her. Christine’s performance is met with unanimous approval and Raoul goes backstage to congratulate her. The meeting becomes a reunion, both realising that they used to play together as children. As soon as Christine is alone, a figure appears behind the mirror. It is The Phantom, the teacher whom she has never seen – her Angel of Music. The Phantom draws Christine into the dark beyond the mirror and, when Raoul returns, the room is empty. Christine is led beneath the Opera House. They cross a lake and arrive at The Phantom’s subterranean lair. The Phantom explains that he is a composer and she has been his inspiration. He is teaching her so that she can sing his music.

Christine falls asleep, waking the following morning to the sound of the music box. Consumed with curiosity, Christine succeeds in revealing The Phantom’s face. His anger dissolves into self-pity and Christine feels herself almost reciprocating his affection. The Phantom agrees to return her to the outside world.

Backstage at the Opera, Buquet, the flyman, taunts the ballet chorus with stories of ‘the ghost’. Madame Giry cautions him to hold his tongue.

Meanwhile the Opera has been thrown into confusion by Christine’s disappearance. Everyone has received notes from The Phantom.

The Phantom demands that Carlotta be replaced by Christine as leading lady in a forthcoming revival of the opera Il Muto. News arrives of Christine’s return, but the managers assure Carlotta that no heed will be paid to The Phantom’s demands.

The Phantom’s voice is heard threatening ‘a disaster beyond imagination’. Il Muto is performed with Christine cast in a silent role. The Phantom’s voice reiterates his demands and, when these are ignored, he causes Carlotta to emit the croak of a toad instead of singing. As the indisposed prima donna is led away, André replaces her with Christine. But The Phantom is still much in evidence. He appears in the wings during the Il Muto ballet, disguised as a stagehand, and puts a noose around Buquet’s to hang him.

In the ensuing pandemonium Christine flees with Raoul to the safety of the roof of the Opera House. They agree to leave together that night. The Phantom emerges from his hiding place, where he has heard everything, and vows vengeance. As Christine and the cast take their bows, the chandelier crashes down from the ceiling.

At a masked ball, twelve months later, all celebrate the New Year and the disappearance of The Phantom. Raoul and Christine have secretly become engaged. At the height of the festivities a strange figure appears through the mirrored walls of the ballroom. The Phantom has returned. He flings to André the score of his new opera, Don Juan Triumphant, commanding that it be performed. Backstage, Raoul interrogates Madame Giry about the identity of The Phantom. He is an escaped fairground freak – a physical monstrosity with a brilliant mind. Presumed dead, he in fact lives still, somewhere in the Opera House.

Raoul hits upon a scheme to ensnare The Phantom using his own opera as bait. If Christine agrees to sing the principal role, The Phantom is sure to attend. With the doors locked and guarded he will be unable to escape. Christine unhappily agrees to co-operate. The singers have immense difficulty learning the dissonant score, but their task is mysteriously facilitated when the piano magically takes over and the singers, mesmerised, begin to perform flawlessly.

Christine visits her father’s grave. She knows that if she can free herself from his memory she will no longer be in thrall to The Phantom. The Phantom appears to her in the graveyard. His hypnotic influence, however, is broken when Raoul arrives on the scene. Enraged, The Phantom declares war on them both.

In the final scene of Don Juan Triumphant, Christine becomes aware that The Phantom has taken the place of Piangi in the role of Don Juan. As her duet finishes, she exposes him and tears the mask from his face. Surrounded by police, The Phantom is nevertheless able to escape, dragging Christine with him. The garrotted body of Piangi is revealed.

Madame Giry agrees to lead Raoul to The Phantom’s lair. An angry mob follows. In the underground lair, Christine confronts The Phantom: his true disfigurement lies not in his face but in his soul. Raoul appears and The Phantom traps him. The Phantom offers Christine a bizarre choice: she must either stay with him forever or see Raoul killed. Christine, calmly facing off with The Phantom, decides to act. She kisses and embraces him. The embrace lasts a long time. With the mob drawing ever closer, The Phantom relents and orders Christine and Raoul to go. The mob descends towards the lair, but all that remains of The Phantom is a white mask.

The Christines take their final bow

How 6 leading ladies helped make ‘phantom’ a broadway phenomenon.

The iconic Broadway character Christine Daaé has been played by 40 women over 35 years.

Sarah Brightman shaped the role when “The Phantom of the Opera” had its London premiere in 1986.

Sierra Boggess played Christine in Las Vegas, New York and London, appearing in the filmed 25th anniversary concert.

Sandra Joseph transformed into Christine for more than 1,000 shows over 10 years.

Ali Ewoldt, a Filipino American actress, was the first person of color to be cast as Christine in New York.

Julia Udine was one of the youngest Christines, first cast at age 19.

And Emilie Kouatchou became the first Black Christine in “Phantom’s” Broadway history in 2021.

For 35 years, the man in the white mask has been synonymous with Broadway.

But as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” nears its final curtain call in New York, ending a record-setting run, there’s another character who deserves an encore.

“This is not ‘Phantom of the Opera.’ This is ‘Christine of the Opera.’ This is her show,” says Emilie Kouatchou, one of the last women to play the sought-after female lead.

The role of Christine Daaé is a dream fulfilled for a budding soprano hoping to grace the stage of the Majestic Theatre on West 44th Street. It’s a complex, complicated and demanding part. She is onstage for about two hours of the nearly 2½ hour show, and her lines are mostly sung.

Christine is a dancer and chorus girl who lost her father at a young age. She begins taking lessons from the mysterious Phantom, who she believes is her “Angel of Music” — someone her father warned her of years before.

Including alternates and excluding understudies, 40 women have played Christine over the years.

Some of the women auditioned multiple times. Some began their journeys in traveling companies or as understudies. Others were cast in their teens or early 20s.

For a few, it was their first Broadway role.

As with any show spanning more than three decades , the production, casting and message have become more relevant as our world — and society — has evolved. “The Phantom of the Opera” is largely about acceptance, and learning to reveal ourselves, without a physical or symbolic mask. (The musical is based on the 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux.)

“It really teaches love and empathy,” says Julia Udine, who is currently a Christine alternate and performs three times a week.

We spoke with six women who have played the role on Broadway. They reflected on their connection to the character, how the role paved the way for their careers on- and offstage, and the legacy of “Phantom” in New York and the theater community.

Sarah Brightman

Sarah Brightman was the blueprint for Christine Daaé. Andrew Lloyd Webber , her husband at the time of the show’s London premiere in 1986, wrote the role with her talents and her soprano skills at the front of his mind.

“My voice was very much in his ears,” Brightman said. “To be a muse of a composer that’s creating new things and wonderful things and very successful things — I think it was a beautiful thing.”

Critics were generally energetic about the show’s Broadway debut in 1988, with Brightman again in the lead, after its successful run in London.

Frank Rich of the New York Times characterized it as “a victory of dynamic stagecraft over musical kitsch.” The Washington Post review called the music “almost mesmerizing, insistently boring into one’s brain for hours afterward.”

Sarah Brightman was the first Christine, in London and New York. Sarah Brightman photographed in London in April.

New York attendance in the show’s debut year totaled more than 663,000 people, with a gross of $28,553,279.

The show’s growth and success is not lost on Brightman, who described it as “a wonderful jewel within Broadway.”

“As monumental as the role is to everybody else, I was a young person doing my best with all the talent I had to put this beautiful role in place,” she said. “I feel very humbled by it.”

Sierra Boggess

Like other musical successes, “The Phantom of the Opera” has sprouted six productions in the United States and dozens of tours internationally.

Sierra Boggess, who joined the Broadway production in 2013, played the role of Christine in Las Vegas, New York and London, where she appeared in the filmed 25th-anniversary concert.

“It’s a role that I kept revisiting because it is so rich,” Boggess said. “Every time I came back to it, I found more and more and more.”

At its core, the musical is a love triangle . Christine is drawn to Erik (a.k.a. the Phantom), a composer who shields himself from society in a lair beneath the Paris Opera House. Born with a facial deformity (hence the mask), he has yet to experience kindness or love. He is a man of great talent and has traits that often borderline on the supernatural. He becomes Christine’s mentor.

Sierra Boggess joined the Broadway production in 2013. Sierra Boggess photographed in New York in March.

But Christine is also drawn to Raoul, a childhood friend and more suitable mate. (We’ll end the spoilers here.)

Boggess said she came to realize how “psychologically interesting” the “heightened love story” is. “We have this side of us as humans that’s like, we can help somebody by loving them,” she said. “I’m sure therapists would have a field day with that.”

The more Boggess dove into the psychology of the story, the more she shifted how she played the role.

“Christine is badass and people should know that,” she said.

Sandra Joseph

As a child, Sandra Joseph enjoyed performing but had a fear of the stage.

“When you don’t have the courage to go after something you really love, then you live with regret and the sense of what might’ve been,” she said. “So I promised myself at a very young age that I would move through this intense stage fright and keep trying to do this thing that I love.”

Fast-forward to 1994. Joseph was 26 and 4½ years into her five-year plan to “make it big” in New York when she auditioned for Christine for the first time. Like many others, she didn’t get the gig on her first pass. She would eventually begin her journey with the national tour as an understudy for Christine before — after two more auditions — she would land the part in New York.

Joseph would go on to play the role for 10 years and more than 1,000 shows.

“What I know for sure from standing on that stage so many times is the emotional connection that the story makes with the audience,” she said.

John Cudia and Sandra Joseph in “The Phantom of the Opera.” Sandra Joseph photographed in New York in March.

Nowadays, Joseph spreads the message of how to live an unmasked life in a one-woman show. Audiences are often delighted when she sprinkles in some of Christine’s best musical moments throughout her talks. Joseph also wrote a book on the same subject.

“I was a ‘Career Christine.’ It was my perfect role, and there was nowhere to go from there that would have been better for me as an actress. I knew that,” she said. “I could not have imagined that the gift ‘Phantom’ gave me would unlock all of these lessons.”

Joseph fell in love with “The Phantom of the Opera” in more ways than one. In 2002, she married her co-star, Ron Bohmer, who played the Phantom in a national tour at the Kennedy Center.

Ali Ewoldt first saw “The Phantom of the Opera” when she was 10 years old. She and her father sat in a box on stage right, and it was there, she said, that she fell in love with the “premiere soprano role that all young sopranos would aspire to.”

As an adult, Ewoldt would spend a decade auditioning for the role in different iterations of the tour and production.

“I have always been a soprano despite my best efforts as a child,” she said. “There are very few leading-lady soprano roles that exist, and so I knew that Christine was a major aspiration and a dream role for me.”

In 2016, Ewoldt finally sang “Think of Me” on the Majestic Theatre stage, auditioning in front of famed director Harold “Hal” Prince.

Ali Ewoldt fell in love with the role of Christine after seeing the show as a 10-year-old. Ali Ewoldt photographed in New York in March.

“I kind of let go of the idea of needing to book the job but really tried to take in that moment,” Ewoldt said.

She got the part.

“It’s so the way of the universe,” she said. “It understands, somehow, this need when we decide that we’re just doing it for the love instead of desperately trying to get a job is how we get the things that we want.”

Ewoldt, who is Filipino American, was the first person of color to be cast in the role.

“The gift of that for me was getting the feedback of people who didn’t realize that this was a role that was open to them,” she said. “The world changes, and just because you haven’t seen someone that looks like you or feels like you or has your abilities play a part — what we can do is show up and be the best versions of ourselves.”

Julia Udine

Julia Udine auditioned for Christine for the new, restaged North American tour in 2013. She was 19 and would open — and stay — with the touring production before heading to Broadway to fill the leading role at age 21. She was the second-youngest woman to play the role in New York.

“Christine has been an integral part of my adult life,” said Udine, now 29. “As she grows into a woman in the show, I was also growing into a woman in my life.”

Udine, like Christine, is a dancer, and paired with her soprano capabilities, the role, she said, was “all of my ‘things’ wrapped up in one.”

Julia Udine is part of the show's final cast. Julia Udine photographed in New York in March.

“She goes through so many ups, so many downs, and as an actress, it’s really cathartic to play a role like that,” Udine said. “It really challenges you in so many ways, and I think that any woman who has played the role of Christine feels that challenge nightly.”

Udine said it is “surreal” to reflect on being a part of the show’s final cast as a Christine alternate. Her last days on the “Phantom” stage are among the dwindling days of the production.

“It’s been the heartbeat of New York City for so long,” she said. “‘Phantom’ is Broadway.”

Emilie Kouatchou

“I think I can be the first Black Christine.”

These are the words Emilie Kouatchou uttered to a visiting casting director in her college years at the University of Michigan.

“I was very confident in my ability to take on this role,” she said.

That confidence served Kouatchou well, and after a few attempts, she made her Broadway debut as a Christine alternate in October 2021. A few months later, she would take on the role full-time.

Emilie Kouatchou calls Christine “a beast of a role.” Emilie Kouatchou photographed in New York in March.

“I’m getting to be powerful, and soft, and sexy, and feminine and masculine,” Kouatchou said. “I think it’s important for people to see someone who looks like me being able to be all of these things, because as Black women, we don’t get to do that quite often. We really get boxed into a certain type of role.”

The actress said the role has helped her grow as a person and as a performer. Calling Christine “a beast of a role,” Kouatchou recalls thinking during an early rehearsal, “Wait, she sings all of this?”

Now, she will be onstage, playing Christine, when the curtain comes down on the final show.

“It’s a dream to be on Broadway to represent and to shine and feel like I’m fulfilling a childhood dream,” she said.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that Sierra Boggess played Christine in more cities than others in the role. She performed in three cities, with one show filmed for a 25th-anniversary special. The story has been corrected.
