Cycling in Tenerife and the Mount Teide climb
We flew to the Spanish island of Tenerife to go riding on Mount Teide. It may be the preferred training destination of many Tour de France contenders - but the island has plenty to offer amateur folk too

Circling to land at the airport, photographer Andy Jones nudged me to look out the window, "look there's Teide".
"Where?" I had to ask him, all I could see were clouds. He pointed out that I was looking too low down, looking higher I spotted the cone of the volcano rising up above the cloud line. My first impression - that is a very long way up.

Sir Bradley Wiggins first visited Tenerife in January 2011 but he was far from the first pro cyclist to use the Parador Hotel at the summit of Mount Teide. He was however unusual in choosing to publicly share his training time there.
Lots of teams and pros - including Team Sky and Chris Froome - have stayed there in the past, but the fact that Lance Armstrong and a number of dopers have used Tenerife for training, and the seclusion afforded by the high-altitude hotel, has given the cynics plenty of fuel to conclude that riders using the hotel have motives beyond finding the perfect training conditions. We are going to put that aside and look purely at the benefits Tenerife can offer, for any cyclist.
Why make Tenerife your next cycling destination?
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, 200 miles off the west coast of Africa. It is a four-hour flight from the UK but conveniently within the same time zone.
Triangular in shape, it is dominated by the volcano positioned right in the middle of it. The very top of Mount Teide is 3,718m, making it the highest mountain in a Spanish territory but the road, the part we were interested in, only goes to a little over 2,300m.
The climate in Tenerife makes it the perfect winter training camp destination. The south side is in the rain shadow of Mount Teide and is dry and barren, but the north is more lush and green. This makes for varied riding even on a relatively small island. The road circumference of Tenerife is just 223 miles.
Unlike the Balearics, another popular winter cycling destination, the weather is much more stable and predictable. Even in December when we visited temperatures can reach as high as 26°C in the day and they remain a comfortable 10-15°C at night. Having had snow in Mallorca in February and March, I'd much prefer to go to Tenerife to get a cyclist's tan.
Altitude training on Mount Teide
Beyond the pleasant climate, the relatively cheap flights and a wealth of accommodation, there is one very significant reason why Tenerife is a great winter cycling destination: Mount Teide itself. Although not the highest road in Europe, it is the longest continuous ascent as you have the opportunity to start the climb from sea level.
In just 35km you can ride from zero to 2,100m and it really is continuous, not a flat section or banked hairpin alleviates the strain on your legs. For the dedicated pro rider looking to accumulate as much climbing as possible it is perfect. You can cover as much as 4,000m a day in a relatively short distance. The other benefit is the location of the Hotel Parador on the plateau at the top of Mount Teide; this means that Tenerife meets the ‘sleep high, train low' criteria.
Altitude training as a way of increasing your red blood cell count and improving your capacity to process oxygen is well documented. Cyclists and other endurance athletes have been going to altitude for performance benefits since the early 1990s.
Some riders struggle to make high-intensity efforts at altitude, an obvious problem if you are riding the cols of Europe in events such as the Etape, the Marmotte or indeed the Tour de France, so a period of altitude training will help them to acclimatise as well as offering training benefits.
With nearly all roads leading to the top of Teide it is easy to do your training rides on either the lower slopes or the upper slopes. At the lower altitudes you are able to train more intensely because of the oxygen available, with the added benefit that you are doing your body less damage so will be able to recover more quickly. Even without going over 1,500m you could still easily accumulate 2,000-3,000m simply by ascending repeatedly to the mid-point of the climb.
Tenerife is a fantastic winter destination. The weather is warm and stable and the roads away from the coast are quiet and well made. However, the climbing could be a problem for some. Before training on Tenerife you need to have developed a reasonable level of base fitness to get the most benefit from the long climbs and riding at altitude.
If you hate climbing and have a low level of fitness you may find the day after day relentless climbing too much for your body or your psyche. However, the gradients are easier than many mainland European climbs and certainly less steep than a lot of UK hills, so while the climbing is more continuous it is a question of endurance as much, if not more so, than strength.
Climbing Mount Teide
To get a true feel for how tough Teide really is we planned a continuous ascent from sea level to the summit at 2,100m and then on to the plateau for a coffee at The Parador.
Our guides for the day, Jen and Stu Caldicott from Polka Dot Cycling Holidays, were there to give us the pro treatment with support vehicle and navigational assistance - not that you need much, the only way is up.
Starting on the coast at El Medano we rode as a group out of town with Jen calling directions from the rear and Cycling Weekly's Symon Lewis setting a slightly too hot pace on the front as the road immediately began climbing upwards.
Heading toward San Isidro we faced the first major challenge of the day, the bridge over the motorway. There was an audible groan from everyone as we fumbled for top sprockets and got out of the saddle, it struck me as rather worrying that I was already on the limit of both my heart rate and gears less than 5km from the start with at least another 30km of climbing still to go.
By the time we had exited the town of San Isidro the group had split, I was perfectly content to chat with our guide and host about the riding on Tenerife, while the rest of the group seemed more intent on pushing the pace. With only three turns to navigate, a support vehicle, and an obvious regrouping point at the summit, it made sense to split up. The only way to tackle a long climb is at your own pace.
The climb of Teide from the south side can be split into two distinct parts; the lower part up to Vilaflor and the more barren section leading to the top. Vilaflor is the highest village on Tenerife at 1,500m and can be reached by three different roads. For riders wanting to accumulate lots of climbing without the strain of going to altitude this is an obvious destination and conveniently there is a coffee shop and garage here for mid-ride refuelling.
The road to Vilaflor winds gradually upwards and offers plenty of visual interest and relatively gentle gradients with only the occasional kick up to eight or nine per cent. At the time we were there it was surprisingly lush and green from recent rainfall but generally it's dry and arid. Prickly pears and cacti line the roadside and much of the surrounding land is terraced with vines. Tenerife has several vineyards but while the wine is popular with the locals, barely any gets exported so try it while you are there.
We stopped just past the petrol station in Vilaflor to refill bottles and regroup. While there we saw the Neon-Velo training camp pulling into the cafe with riders from Rapha, Wheelbase and Raleigh. Luckily for us they were using the roads up to Vilaflor but not beyond so we wouldn't have to suffer the ignominy of seeing them zoom past us.
After Vilaflor the character of the climb starts to change. There is less evidence of farming and the cacti give way to pine forests. The smell of pine trees and the orangey hues of the rocks makes this section reminiscent of Mediterranean climbs.
While the road still twists and turns the gradient becomes a bit stiffer in places and by the time you reach the edge of the tree line and are into the rockier, more barren section you are pretty much resigned to using just the top sprocket of your cassette.
The final 5km has some of the steepest sections of the climb and you certainly become aware of the 30km already in your legs. Unlike many of the cols in the Alps and Pyrenees, there are no cambered hairpin bends to alleviate the strain on your legs, if only momentarily, and there is certainly no flat section. It's a perfect climb for making you maintain a consistent workload and focus you on your pedalling technique, as you cannot lift off the gas for a moment if you mean to continue forwards and upwards.
By the time I reached the summit everyone else had already crashed out on the picnic blanket thoughtfully provided by Stu and Jen. The view from the top is quite spectacular - on a clear day you can see deep into the valley below but often you are presented with a view of the cloud that seems to hover between 1,200m and 1,500m a lot of the time.
Watching the sun go down on this cloud inversion provided one of the most memorable and stunning moments of the trip.
Between the summit of the climb and the Parador there is a 4km descent and then a long plateau before climbing slightly back up. This section is where Teide gets its description as being a ‘moonscape' from. Barely any vegetation covers the loose surface and you can clearly see the lava flow and misshapen lumps of molten rock from volcanic eruptions.
Unlike most climbs Teide can be warmer at the top than on the lower slopes where often the cloud can hang around even in the middle of the day. Certainly the day we rode it we noticed a significant temperature change when we reached the plateau. It is worth carrying several layers with you, as you can never be entirely sure what you will encounter.
Having taken the best part of three hours to reach the summit I was looking forward to the descent, however first we had to climb the 4km back up from the plateau. While the coffee is really good at the Parador I wouldn't recommend stopping for too long and if you are feeling a bit tired turn around at the summit rather than dropping down the other side as that extra 4km felt a struggle.
The descent is fantastic; retracing our steps the way we came up it is flowing without being overly technical or tight. You can often see below you so have a clear idea of what is coming up next and whether there is any traffic.
Drivers on Teide are particularly considerate, every time I flew up to one I was spotted in the rear view mirror and the driver indicated and pulled over.
The only thing you have to be really careful of is the cloud. We hit it at around 1,800m and for a few moments we were treated to an unusual combination of light shafts being diffused through the mist creating beautiful yet eerie scenery in the pine forests.
However it was short-lived and soon we were into dense fog where it was hard to see more than 15 metres ahead. The temperature dropped considerably and I was aware of the droplets of water covering my bars and top tube.
It was like the worst kind of wet winter morning. By just below Vilaflor the cloud had disappeared again and we were back into warm sunshine. Looking back and upwards toward the volcano we could see the ring of cloud circling Mount Teide and the summit rising up into the blue sky above.
Tenerife and Teide are unique in many ways - in a four-hour ride of just under 80km we had ascended and descended 2,100m and experienced several different types of scenery and terrain. If you are fit and want to get seriously fit this is definitely the place to come to.
Bang Teide - What the riders thought...
Jack Pullar - former National hill-climb champion
The climbs out here are much longer than any I raced on during my hill-climb campaign. It takes a lot more endurance to get up these ones.
There are no really steep climbs here, making Teide possible for everyone. Tenerife is a great location to ride because of the weather and mountains.
Being able to climb to over 2,000 metres in December is rare in Europe, but we have been.
The roads are nice and the drivers friendly. We have been lucky to have support from Neon Velo which has taken the adventure out of our training - without their car following we would have to carry a lot of clothing for the long descents.
Rich Lang - Aussie-born Team Raleigh pro rider
This is my first time on the island of Tenerife and it is definitely a great place to get away from the UK winter weather.
There is pretty much no flat on the island which can be tough mentally when you are tired. Very few of the climbs are steep so if you come here with the right gearing, then you can tap away at them at a pace which is comfortable for you.
We have been riding from four to seven hours each day, with the longer days seeing us go over the top of Mount Teide.
To climb for 50 kilometres is not easy, but by pacing yourself it is possible!
Mike Cuming Tenerife is a great riding location and I can understand why Team Sky has used it so much. It is around 50 kilometres up to the highest point on Teide, 50 kilometres of climbing.
When you are tired this is mentally very tough, but at five-seven per cent average gradient, it is a climb which you can get into a rhythm and work at a specific level.
We have climbed Teide on our longest days, six plus hours, which has really pushed us. With it being the winter we are concentrating on endurance, so the long climb is perfect for this. I would recommend anyone to come out here because the landscapes are so varied that they keep you motivated to carry on up the mountain.
Symon Lewis - CW's man on the spot
My first impressions of the island were good. It's definitely a great destination to get some warm weather riding in during the winter months and you can certainly see why the pros use it. If it's hard riding you're after, you have endless choices with various tough routes, all linking up to the top of Mount Teide.Steadier climbs or easier days are also possible.
Though you are spoiled by the vast amount of climbing and descending, unfortunately, you won't find any flat rides on the island. So for that day you just want to spin to the cafe or a quick two-hour blast, you can't really do that, which is a shame.
I think Tenerife can be a great place to ride your bike, but only for specific reasons, to get away from the winter gloom and to get some good, solid training in. If that's not what you're after you may find some of the other Canary Islands or Spanish destinations tick more boxes for you. In the hot summer months, Mallorca is a better option, is closer to home and has all the usual variations bike riders look for.
Polka Dot Cycling
Polka Dot Cycling Holidays is run by owners Stu and Jen Caldicott. They are both experienced riders and former road racers who now specialise in running mountain holidays for cyclists. Based in France for the summer season, they decamp and follow the sun to Tenerife for warm weather winter training.
During February, March and April they run structured training camps that will help you get the most out of your time in Tenerife. Their mix of routes will work on your fitness, technique and bike handling. Thanks to their vast amount of experience of running and taking part in camps Jen and Stu will ensure you pace your week so you go home fitter rather than absolutely shattered, which is so often the case with unstructured camps.
All rides are fully supported so there is water, energy products and even a cup of coffee on hand whenever you need it. With the huge changes of altitude and temperature that you can experience on Tenerife its important to have plenty of spare layers to hand and a following van comes into its own here.
Most of their trips are based from La Caleta on the west coast but there is a ‘sleep at altitude' week at the Parador running from the April 20-27 with places still available.

Teide (Tenerife) – Cycling Routes, Climb Profiles & GPX files
Being the highest mountain in Spain and offering unparalleled climbing, Teide is almost synonyms to altitude cycling training. Every year the majestic volcano attracts thousands of cyclists from across the globe. After all, how many places on earth can offer cycling routes with nearly 40km of continuous climbing combined with a suitable for cycling climate throughout the year?
There are probably over 20 different routes you can take to cycle up Teide, with 5 being the main ones. Each route has something different and unique to offer, so they shouldn’t really be judged only based on length and average gradient.
The most popular climbs are from Los Cristianos in the south and La Orotava via El Portillo in the north. A good alternative from the south is reaching Vilaflor via Granadilla .
From the west, the main route is from Chio to Mirador de Boca Tauce and from the eastern part of Tenerife along the TF-24 to the Teide Observatory (Izana) , the easier options being from La Esperanza and the more challenging one via Los Loros .
Puerto de la Cruz – La Orotava – El Protillo – Las Canadas del Teide – Teide Cable Car – Puerto de la Cruz
La Orotava – Chasna – El Portillo – Teide Observatory – La Esperanza – La Victoria del Acentejo – La Orotava
Santa Cruz – El Chorrillo – Teide Observatory – El Portillo – La Orotava – Guamasa – San Cristobal – Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz – San Cristobal – La Esperanza – Teide Observatory (Izana) – La Esperanza San Cristobal – Santa Cruz
Costa Adeje – Los Cristianos – Arona – Vilaflor – Teide, El Retamar – Mirador de Boca Tauce – Chio – Guia de Isora – Playa San Juan – Adeje – Costa Adeje
The western climb up Mount Teide and probably the easiest one. Steady gradient and long bends.
The main climb from the north of the island, following TF-21 all the way up.
Heading west on the TF-24, this undulating road may surprise you a bit.
Stunning climb up the TF-51, numerous hairpin turns and over 1000m of elevation gained.
On the TF-523, leaving Afaro and heading north. Not as popular as the southern and northern climb up Teide, but a tough cookie nevertheless.

Riding Mount Teide – West Side From Adeje
Riding Mount Teide has huge appeal for cyclists. An unbroken climb of almost 50km is very difficult to find in Europe and so cycling in Tenerife has become hugely popular. There are a variety of routes up the volcano so which one is best for you? These are our route notes on climbing Mount Teide from the west.
The climb up Teide from the west is probably the easiest of all the ascents of Mount Teide. Note it’s the easiest not easy! The reason for this is its gradient is a little less punishing than from other sides. It’s also arguably the most beautiful ascent of Teide. This incredible cycling route passes through banana plantations and the Chinyero Volcano. It also heads into the Black Mountains, (Montañas Negras) allowing you to ride through landscapes the same colour as the tarmac. It’s quite a sight as the lava fields provide so many nutrients for the plants that the green trees and shrubbery are almost luminous green!
Adeje to Guia de Isora
The route takes you out of Adeje before climbing into Guia de Isora. There is nothing but ascending for over 50km from here so be prepared. As you climb into Guia de Isora you are likely to notice a change in air temperature as Guia de Isora’s weather can be quite different from Adeje, despite it being under 20km away.
The Banana Plantations
As you ascend though the plantations, you will be rewarded with simply breathtaking views La Gomera. The island is often shrouded in cloud making it a spectacular sight as it sits alone in the Atlantic. From here, you will climb higher. Be prepared for another temperature change as you head into the Black Mountains. You will rack up another 1,500m in vertical ascent across just 15km. The air will become colder and thinner.
Unless you’re desperate to summit in a particular time, stop at the Mirador de los Poleos lookout for incredible views of La Gomera behind you, and the looming Mount Teide in front.
The Final Push
You will ride higher into the national park before turning left towards the cable car for your last few kilometres of this epic ascent.
Length: 55.4km
Average Gradient: 4.4%
Toughest Gradient: 12%
Total Ascent: 2,452m
Top Tips For Riding From the West
Whilst this is the easiest route up Teide, you will still want to avoid the midday heat. Get on your bike early if you are riding during the hotter months of May to October.
Guia de Isora is only 15km from your starting point but it can have a completely different temperature from Adeje.
Be prepared for further changes in temperature by the time you enter the Black Mountains. The 15km after you ascend from Guia de Isora into the mountains will see you clock up over 1,500m of climbing!
Remember that the sun doesn’t rise until relatively late in the winter months and so you won’t be able to start your ride as early as you can in the summer. For example, in December the sun doesn’t rise over Mount Teide until almost 8am.
It is often very cold and windy at the top of the climb so you will need to be prepared. Arm warmers or a windbreaker are really important no matter how warm it is at the start of your ride.

Cycling Tenerife: your ultimate guide
Tenerife is one of the world’s best road cycling destinations. It’s the largest of the Canary islands and, just off the African coast, offers a reliably warm climate year-around with fantastic climbing on smooth roads.
One of our favourite things about cycling in Tenerife is the dramatic scenery: from the lost world of Masca to vertical sea cliffs and the spectacular Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain. You can see Teide from all over the island, looming upwards; it’s one of the main attractions for the pro cycling teams that descend on the island during training camp season.
There aren’t many places you can train on 40+km climbs that take you from sea level to 2,300m during European winter, so biking in Tenerife offers you plenty of unique experiences as a road cyclist.
Cycling Tenerife is about as good as it gets.
Training camps + more…
During Northern Hemisphere winter, there are tons of cycling training camps in Tenerife. Pro cycling in Tenerife tends to be limited to training camps rather than racing; the beautiful roads and weather make it a hotspot for pre-season training.
The island is also a major “sun and sand” holiday destination, with lots of hotels, water parks and beaches that make Tenerife cycling holidays a great choice if you’re with family.

Cycling Tenerife: routes
As far as Tenerife road bike routes go, by far the most famous ride is cycling up Mount Teide. The mountain dominates the island and if you’re coming to Tenerife to cycle, it’s unthinkable you’d leave without tackling it.
Tips for an unforgettable Mount Teide cycling experience
There are five major routes up Teide; our post will help you choose which to do – Cycling Mount Teide: which is the best Teide cycling route? Any one of these up and down routes of Teide could easily be a whole ride in itself: even the fittest amateurs will take at least 2.5 hours to climb to the top.
But if you’ve got all day and want a truly special ride, check out our two Teide loops below. On a good day, we reckon either of these could be contenders for being one of the best cycling Tenerife routes, if not the best road bike rides in the world.
Two unmissable rides for once you’ve done Teide…
Yes, you’ve got to tick off the Teide climb by bike. But there are some other awesome Tenerife bike routes too. To really experience the island, ride the road north to Masca where craggy Andes-style mountains are dotted with rustic Spanish villages before they plunge into the turquoise sea. The scenery is epic – but so are the gradients. This is one tough ride.
From Masca it’s not far to the unforgettable Teno lighthouse. The road clings to the cliff and offers draw-dropping Atlantic views before bringing you to the spectacular lighthouse at the end of the peninsula.
We also love our Anaga loop . It’s on one of the island’s most beautiful roads where you’ll find quiet, smooth ribbons of tarmac that wind up into green forests and down narrow lanes to the sea. It’s easier than the Masca loop too…
However, you do need to bear in mind that Masca and Anaga are in the north of the island. This can make accessing these rides a bit tricky unless you have your own transport or book a tour. Something to think about when you decide where to stay: our guide to where to stay in Tenerife for cyclists might help! Also check out our map below, which shows the routes overlaid on each other, so you can see their location on the island.

Easy cycling in Tenerife
If you hate climbing, cycling holidays in Tenerife are not for you!
Most of the roads either go up or down, there’s very little in the way of flat cycle routes on Tenerife. What there is is not that exciting.
But while most of the roads go up or down, at least the main roads (like those up Teide) are generally at decent gradients (just avoid some of the extremely steep side roads). Cycling in Tenerife is more about endurance than extreme fitness: you don’t need to be a Contador or Quintana, you “just” need to be able to keep going for kilometre after kilometre!
If you’re looking for a rest day ride that avoids some of the major climbs you should be able to put together a moderate route with a bit of planning. Here are some ideas for bike routes in Tenerife that take in a little less climbing.
- A loop around La Orotava via Palo Blanco, Benijos and La Perdoma, along the TF-326, TF-21 and TF-324: around 24km with 700m of climbing.
- Granadilla de Abona to Arafo along the TF-28 and TF-525: roughly 54km and 1,000m of climbing each way. Our Teide via Vilaflor loop includes this section.
- La Orotava to Tejina on the northwest coast, along the TF-21, TF-217, TF-1224 and TF-16: around 32km with 600m of climbing.
And finally…

Cycling Tenerife: where to stay
If you’re deciding where’s best to stay in Tenerife for cyclists, start with our in-depth article on the pros and cons of each resort: Best places to stay in Tenerife (for cyclists) . This article also includes hotel suggestions for cyclists.
Our choice: Landmar, Playa La Arena
We spent five nights at Landmar, Playa La Arena (formerly Be Live, Playa La Arena). It’s a large hotel with lots of facilities and it’s a good option if you’re travelling with children and/or looking for an all-inclusive package.
What we liked
- Good location on the w est coast, giving access from the door to Teide (via Chio) and also to Masca in the northwest.
- Large, attractive pool area with three pools surrounded by palm trees, facing the sea. The main pool is in the middle and pool activities are run here (for example water aerobics). The pool closest to the sea does not permit the use of inflatables and so is quieter and has an adult focus. The small children’s pool is furthest from the sea. It is divided into two with half being the drop off zone for the water slide and the other half the shallow pool for toddlers.
- Our 4 year old loved the waterslide and spent at least an hour just taking himself up and down it.
- Kid-friendly activities in addition to the pool area. The kids club (open 11-12:45 and 3-5, children under 6 have to be accompanied by an adult) is based next to an excellent pirate ship climbing frame. The same area also hosts mini golf, archery, a pétanque court, balance beams course and tennis court. Near the pools there is also table tennis.
- Gym and spa. There is also a program of daytime and evening activities, should you wish to participate.
- Lift access from the hotel down to the black sand beach of Playa La Arena.
- Wide range of food available at each meal and each night has a different theme. A limited range of food is cooked to order (for example eggs or omelettes for breakfast).
- Our superior family room on the 6th floor contained a king sized bed and sofa bed for the children. It was sufficiently spacious for the four of us though the cupboard space was limited (we’d definitely recommend using packing cases so you don’t have to fully unpack). The children enjoyed the blackboard, floor puzzle and play tent in the room, as well as the kids bathroom accessories.
- We enjoyed the views from our room across Playa La Arena to the cliffs of Los Gigantes.
Things to be aware of
- The hotel is used by a number of British, German and French holiday operators. This is no small boutique hotel.
- We would suggest the hotel is more 3 star than 4 star. It’s comfortable, with good facilities, but don’t expect it to be overly smart.
- The hotel charges for extras you might normally expect to be included. For example, use of the safe deposit box in each room and use of the hotel car park. A 12 euro deposit is also payable for each pool towel.
- Food is served at specific times in the main restaurant. Outside of those times, food is available in the snack bar but the choice is much more limited that the main restaurant and we didn’t find it very appetising.
We enjoyed our stay here. Our 2 and 4 year old kids loved the facilities and we liked the location.

Bike hire Tenerife
Looking for road bike rental in Tenerife? Below you’ll find all the road bike hire shops we’ve been able to uncover on Tenerife. Missed one? Please let us know! We haven’t used these ourselves but would love to hear your experiences. Please drop us a line!
It’s possible to bike Tenerife from any part of the island but you’ll soon see that most of the cycle hire in Tenerife is clustered where most of the tourists are: in the southwest. If you’re staying somewhere else, don’t despair, some of the bike rental shops will deliver bikes across the island. We’ve made a note of where they offer this.
Most of the Tenerife bike hire and rental shops also offer Tenerife cycling tours and excursions, from half days to multi day cycle training camps. These are great ways to get to know the island from a local’s perspective, and discover the best riding on the island.
Prices, services and bike brands often change. Please let us know if anything is incorrect.
- Book your bike in advance, particularly in peak season.
- Shops sometimes close, move or change their prices/bikes before we have a chance to update this list, so please contact them directly before you visit.
- Remember to bring your own pedals, shoes and helmet. This packing list may help!
- Check which way around your brakes are set before you ride away (i.e. whether the front brakes are on the right hand (as is usual in the UK) or on the left (as is usual elsewhere in Europe)). Also take a look at our list of things to check before hiring a bike .

Average temperatures in Tenerife remain a solid 17-24°C throughout the year, making it a good choice for anyone whose main ambition is to cycle Tenerife in the sun. Rainfall is also low – you’re most likely to get rain in December and even then it’s only on average for six days of the month.
Throughout the year it’s worth remembering that the north side of the island is often cooler and wetter than the south. There’s a reason the scenery in the north is greener than the arid rocky south! Also know that the upper part of the island is often shrouded in a thin layer of clouds that forms around Mount Teide at 1,000-1,500htm.
As for the difficult question of exactly how much cooler and wetter the north is than the south, we asked local cyclist Carolyn Gaskell to comment. She lives in the north-east of the island and had this to say:
“Yes, it’s definitely wetter and colder in the north compared to the south. But it’s also much more beautiful! The north side (Los Silos – Puerto De la Cruz get the sunsets and is in the shade of the Teide and therefore cool in the mornings – generally). It’s much busier traffic wise that side, because the motorway stops at Puerto, so all the cars are on the main road. The side roads through the villages are nice, but steep! The Anaga mountains, is my favourite area, they are very often covered in a light mist cloud, and it also rains properly up there too. February-March are usually the worst months for rain. August is commonly the worst month for winds, November to January, usually have the calmest weather, but it’s not an exact science… and the last few years have been quite unpredictable!”

We used and liked the following two guidebooks during our Tenerife trip:
- Marco Polo guide to Tenerife : the book gives an overview of the main destinations on the island and we liked the introductory chapters on the island and its food and drink. It comes with a separate map at 1:130,000 which was useful for high level planning but lacking sufficient detail to show all the minor roads.
- The Real Tenerife by Andrea and Jack Montgomery puts a bit more flesh on the bones. It’s a personal guide to Tenerife and more opinionated than the Marco Polo guide. The enthusiastic authors help you get under the island’s skin, but we did find that some of their descriptions were a little over-romantic. Also the photos are black and white, there is no index and the map is poor. Nonetheless, a refreshing change to your typical guidebook.

If you like physical maps for route planning, it’s worth buying the Globe series map of Tenerife . At 1:75,000 it shows all the roads relevant to cyclists. It is annotated with symbols for things like gas stations and tourist destinations which you may either like or not.

Cycling Mount Teide from Las Cristianos, Spain
Ride 33.2 kilometers gaining 2,109 meters at 6.4% average grade.
This is one of the most popular routes to the top of the most popular destination in the Canary Islands: Mount Teide. This route ranks #73 in the world and ends at the Teide National Park Sign, but do continue past the sign to the Visitor Center and paved high point of the road and island - this is the most scenic part of the climb and takes you in view of Mount Teide and its unique volcanic formations.
Strava’s leaderboard for all segments up the mountain proves to be a testament to the popularity of Tenerife and Mount Teide. The leaders include professional cyclists with familiar names: Froome, Porte, Pinot, and more.
This is the southwestern approach to the massive Mount Teide volcano. Mount Teide is a volcano on Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands, and is the highest point in Spain and above sea level of all the Atlantic Islands. The highest point of Mount Teide is 3,718m (12,198’). The southern approaches to the summit have moderate traffic at the start due to the tourist towns they start in: Los Cristianos (southwest), and El Medano (southeast). Los Cristianos is a large city (population 21,235) which caters to tourists and has a ferry port. Much of the traffic we encounter along this long 52 kilometer climb is enroute to the same destination as we are, the National Park and Mount Teide.
SIX POPULAR ROUTES UP MOUNT TEIDE
PJAMM Google Map with six of the most popular routes up Mount Teide.
The routes in counterclockwise order beginning with Mount Teide in El Medano (Southeast):
- El Medano : 38.3 kilometers gaining 2,289m at 5.7% average grade ending at the park sign on TF-21
- Los Cristianos : 33.2 kilometers gaining 2,109m at 6.4% ending at the park sign on TF-21
- Los Gigantes : 36.6 kilometers gaining 2,068m at 5.6% ending at highpoint on TF-38
- Puerto de la Cruz : 47 kilometers gaining 2,429m at 5% ending at the highpoint on TF-21
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife : 62.5 kilometers (longest climb in Europe) gaining 2,827m at 3.7% ending at TF-21 highpoint
- Guimar : Ride 48.9 kilometers gaining 2,508m at 4.4% ending at the highpoint on TF-21
SEGMENT ONE
Los Cristianos to Vilaflor.
Ride 20.8 kilometers gaining 1,264 meters at 6.1% average grade.
The first segment is a climb from the popular oceanfront tourist town of Los Cristianos to the lovely mountain town of Vilaflor. We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Spa Villalba in Vilaflor during our trip to Tenerife, and felt it was well located on the mountain for cycling the multiple routes up the flanks of Mount Teide.
We ride along TF-51 for much of this route.
There are signs on every approach to Mount Teide that identify the number of deaths on the road for the past five years. However, all the routes and climbs on the island, while many had moderate to heavy traffic (depending on the day and time of day) we always felt safe on our rides.
Arona is a good alternative to start if you do not wish to ride with traffic from Los Cristianos.
From Arona the ride is 25.3 kilometers, gaining 1,592 meters at 6.3% average grade to the Park Sign.
Turn left onto TF-21 at kilometer 20.8 as you reach Vilaflor.
Vilaflor to the National Park Sign:
Ride 12.3 kilometers gaining 842 meters at 6.9%.
This is the most scenic segment of the true climb (we do recommend continuing past the park sign to the Visitor Center and also the road’s high point beyond that). We are in an alpine setting for the majority of this segment. All approaches to Mount Teide include a substantial amount of time in an alpine environment.
As with the entire route, this segment is consistently in the 6-8% range.
THE PARK SIGN
Along with photos with Mount Teide in the background, this is the top photo opp location on the mountain.
There are just two of the big metal National Park signs - on this route and the one up T-38 from the west.
El Retamar is the high point of this climb.
PARK SIGN TO VISITOR CENTER
Ride 15.8 kilometers from the sign to the Visitor Center.
This segment is the most scenic part of the 52 kilometer route to the paved high point of the mountain ( Los Cristianos to High Point ). There is an eight-kilometer descent averaging 2.3%, and descending 236 meters after the park sign, followed by 7.8 kilometer climb at 4.2% to the Visitor Center.
The views along the last seven kilometers of this segment are stunning.
It is nearly mandatory to ride from the park sign at least to the Visitor Center.
There are four primary access routes to the Visitor Center -
TF 21 (north and south) TF 38 (west) and TF 24 (north) and TF-525 (east).
VISITOR CENTER TO HIGH POINT
From the Visitor Center it is another six kilometers to Tenerife’s highest paved point.
Sign at the high point.
This is also Montaña Blanca and the trailhead for the hike of 8.3 kilometers (5.16 miles one way) gaining an incredible 1,188 meters (3,897’) to Mount Teide Peak (you can see the hike on our interactive map from our PJAMM Adventure App ). Note: To hike to Mount Teide summit you must have a permit ( apply here ). The Teide Cable Car parking lot is just past the finish of our climb - Google Map of Teide Cable Car . With a cable car ticket, one can hike to the top and ride the cable car down, but you’ll have to hike 2.3 kilometers back to the trailhead if you don’t have a ride at the bottom of the cable car.
VISITOR CENTER
Food, beverages, bathroom and extraordinary views from the VC.
The tram is accessed 3.4 kilometers at 4.6% past the Visitor Center. The tram will take you to near the top of Mount Teide. If you wish to hike to the highest point in Spain, get those tickets well in advance of your trip - we were told two months at the information booth in October 2022 ( Official Website ). Because of an unseasonal rainstorm the tram was not running during our trip.
Wintery conditions on Mount Teide in March.
The steepest five kilometers on this route begin just south of Vilaflor (highest village in Tenerife at 1,400 meters) at kilometer 23.7 (7.5%). We enter Teide National Park at kilometer 26, just north of Vilaflor. We are in an alpine setting for about 14 kilometers after leaving Vilaflor, before we rise above treeline for the remaining 14 kilometers at about kilometer 25.
Mount Teide - the highest point in Spain at 3,718 meters (12,198’).
Ron Hawk’s water bottle collapsed on his climb.
Bike Point - five locations on Tenerife.
Center Photo - Alberto Delgado (center) - Tenerife Cycling Tours - HIGHLY recommended!
Bike rentals on Tenerife can be obtained via: (a) Bike Point (five locations), and (b) Free Motion which has Specialized, Cannondale, and Pinarello rentals, and is endorsed by our cycling friend Bo Jensen, who has significant experience cycling the Canary Islands.
Paradores are Spanish government owned luxury hotels. The Parador on Tenerife is located at the Visitor Center and is the best location to stay, though it is pricey, for cycling the many routes up to Mount Teide. The professionals stay here because it also provides altitude acclimation (situated at 2,100 meters). The cost of Parador de Las Canadas del Teide was about twice the cost of our Vilaflor hotel ( Villalba Hotel Spa ; 85 versus 160 euros).

Cycling Mount Teide: An Epic Journey from Sea to Summit
- January 22, 2024
Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, beckons with its sunny beaches and vibrant culture. But for cyclists seeking a different kind of adventure, the mighty Mount Teide awaits. Mount Teide is Spain’s highest peak, rising to an impressive 3,718 meters above sea level, and the journey to its summit is a thrilling challenge.
Introduction to Mount Teide’s Cycling Challenge
Unlike other famous climbs, such as the Col de L’Iseran in the French Alps, Mount Teide provides a rare opportunity: a continuous ascent from sea level to a staggering 2,100 meters. This feature alone sets it apart in Europe, creating a thrilling and unparalleled cycling experience.
The Starting Point: El Médano
Your journey begins in the picturesque fishing village of El Médano, known for its sunny beaches and vibrant culture. Here, cyclists gear up for the 51-kilometer route to the Teide plateau. Despite its shorter length compared to other climbs, don’t be fooled – the true test lies in the relentless ascent ahead.
As you pedal away from El Médano, the air fills with the scent of eucalyptus. The road ahead gracefully meanders through Granadilla, with a gradient maintaining a manageable 4-6%. This section allows you to savor the breathtaking scenery and prepare for the more challenging stretches ahead.
Vilaflor: A Mid-Ascent Haven
Halfway through your ascent lies Vilaflor, a quaint town perfect for a brief respite. Here, you can catch your breath and refuel before tackling the upcoming 11% gradient. The charm of Vilaflor, with its local cafes and stunning views, provides a welcome break in your epic climb. But don’t rest too long!
Post-Vilaflor, the real challenge begins as the gradient spikes. This section tests your strength and endurance, as you ascend above the clouds and enter the majestic Teide National Park. The park’s sheer scale and beauty, experienced after over 50 kilometers of cycling, are awe-inspiring.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site: Teide National Park
Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a unique blend of breathtaking scenery and rare flora. The environmental significance of this area adds an extra layer of wonder to your cycling adventure.
Cycling Mount Teide: A Test of Endurance and Skill
Cycling Mount Teide requires a blend of endurance, skill, and mental fortitude. The continuous climb challenges even the most experienced cyclists, making it a coveted achievement in the cycling community.
Reaching the Volcano’s Base
The road continues to climb to the volcano’s base at 2,325 meters. Here, you have the option to catch a cable car to the summit or simply enjoy the accomplishment of reaching this point. Many cyclists choose to end their journey here, basking in the achievement of conquering Mount Teide.
Guided Tours and Bike Rentals: Tenerife Bike Training
For those looking to enhance their cycling experience, Tenerife Bike Training offers world-class bike rentals and guided tours. Their expertise ensures you make the most of your Mount Teide adventure, whether you’re a novice or an experienced cyclist.
Preparing for the Mount Teide Cycling Challenge in 8 Steps
Preparing for this challenge involves more than just physical training. It’s crucial to have the right gear and to understand the route’s demands. Cyclists should focus on building endurance and familiarizing themselves with climbing techniques.
- Endurance Training : Since the climb to Mount Teide’s base is a long and steady ascent, building endurance is crucial. Long-distance cycling at a moderate intensity will help build the stamina needed for such a climb. Include long rides (3-5 hours) in your training plan, gradually increasing the distance over time.
- Hill Training : Incorporate hill training into your routine. Find local hills or inclines that mimic the gradient of Mount Teide. Practice climbing these hills repeatedly to build strength and get used to the sustained effort required for climbing.
- Interval Training : High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can be beneficial. This involves short bursts of intense effort followed by periods of rest or low-intensity cycling. This type of training helps improve cardiovascular fitness and can increase your power output on the bike.
- Altitude Acclimatization : If possible, train at altitude to acclimatize your body to the thinner air you’ll experience at higher elevations. If training at altitude isn’t possible, consider using an altitude mask or training in conditions that challenge your breathing.
- Proper Nutrition and Hydration : Focus on a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. During long rides, ensure you’re consuming enough energy through food and drinks. Staying hydrated is equally important, especially in the warmer climate of Tenerife.
- Equipment Check : Ensure your bike is in excellent condition. Consider a professional service before the trip. Choose appropriate gear for the climb, including comfortable clothing and suitable tires.
- Route Familiarization : Study the route to Mount Teide. Knowing the route’s profile, including where the steepest sections are, will help you manage your effort effectively.
- Mental Preparation : Prepare mentally for the challenge. This could include visualization techniques, setting personal goals, and developing strategies to overcome tough sections of the climb.
Safety First: Navigating Mount Teide’s Roads
Safety is paramount on Mount Teide’s roads. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and the winding roads demand careful navigation. Cyclists should be well-prepared with safety gear and have a clear understanding of the route.
Cultural Insights: Experiencing Tenerife’s Vibrant Culture
Beyond the bike path, Tenerife’s vibrant culture awaits. Local cuisine, traditions, and the warm hospitality of the Canary Islanders offer a rich cultural experience. Exploring local villages and engaging with residents adds depth to your cycling journey.
Capturing the Journey: Photography and Memories
Mount Teide’s breathtaking landscapes provide ample opportunities for photography. Capturing these moments not only preserves memories but also inspires others to embark on this journey.
Accommodations and Rest Stops Along the Route
Along the route, various accommodations and rest stops offer comfort and respite. From luxury hotels to quaint inns, there’s a place for every traveler to rest and rejuvenate.
Make it to the Top? Professional Cyclists’ Pit Stop: Parador de las Cañadas
At 2,152 meters, the Parador de las Cañadas hotel serves as a popular recovery spot for many professional cyclists, including the likes of Bradley Wiggins and Team Sky. The hotel offers a chance to soak in the view and reflect on your remarkable ascent.

Our utmost commitment lies in finding the perfect match for you. We work closely with a range of accommodation providers that align with our standards, although their availability may vary, especially during peak seasons. Furthermore, we offer the ability to tailor your vacation according to your preferences and budget, ensuring we unearth the most suitable solution to meet your specific needs.
To secure your desired tour, we highly recommend booking early, particularly for popular tourist destinations with limited accommodation options. The most desirable choices are often reserved for the summer season even before spring arrives. By reserving in advance, you can ensure availability and secure the best options for your travel plans.
The ability to accommodate dietary restrictions depends on their severity and can vary in terms of ease. In Tenerife, vegetarian options are generally easier to find, while locating vegan dishes can pose more challenges, especially in rural areas or smaller towns. It’s important to note that lunch stops often take place at traditional establishments, which may have limitations in fulfilling special requests beyond their standard menu offerings. It’s crucial to consider this aspect when planning your trip.
For Tenerife, the optimal times for cycling tours typically fall in late winter (January) and early spring (March), taking into account the specific tour details. However, it’s important to consider the region’s weather conditions, as summer can also be suitable depending on the area, despite the potential for high temperatures.
As long as you dress appropriately, most tours can still proceed in light rain. It’s important to note that during the summer months, afternoon thunderstorms are common, so it’s advisable to begin the tour early. In case the weather forecast appears unfavorable, we can proactively make adjustments to the tour ahead of time to ensure a smooth experience.
Our tours can be tailored to any bike type, be it road, gravel, or mountain bike. We maintain regular communication with you to pinpoint the ideal conditions for your cycling holidays in Tenerife.
A gravel bike is the most adaptable choice, even if you’re planning a road cycling holiday. It won’t significantly impact your road performance while granting you access to some picturesque backroads that might be in a slightly poorer condition than the primary ones. A gravel bike tends to be more comfortable as well.
In any case, Tenerife is a highly diverse island with something to offer every cyclist. No matter the bike you choose, we will determine the perfect route for you to embark on during your cycling holidays.
