Top 5 Ways to Fix Safari Bookmarks Not Syncing on Mac
Adding bookmarks is a convenient feature across web browsers. Apple devices use iCloud to sync saved Safari bookmarks across different devices sharing the same account. You can even organize bookmarks on Safari according to your requirement.
At times, you may struggle if the Safari bookmark syncing does not reflect on your Mac. If you’ve added a bookmark on your iPhone or iPad and it doesn’t show up on your Mac, it can impact your workflow. Should you be facing an issue with your iCloud syncing Safari bookmarks on your Mac, here are your top bets to identify and fix this issue.
1. Connect to a Stable Wi-Fi Network
Ensure you have a stable Wi-Fi connection to begin the troubleshooting. Sometimes, an unstable Wi-Fi network may hinder a proper bookmark sync. This would affect the added bookmark reflecting on your Mac from your other synced devices.
Also, a metered Wi-Fi connection like a mobile hotspot may not facilitate syncing bookmarks. Hence, a Wi-Fi network with high bandwidth is preferable.
2. Enable iCloud Sync for Safari
If there is no issue in your Wi-Fi network, check if the iCloud sync for Safari is on. The bookmarks on Safari will not reflect on your Mac without enabling the iCloud sync for Safari. You’ll need to turn on this sync option on all devices using the same iCloud account. Here’s how to enable iCloud sync for Safari.
iCloud Sync for iPhone
Note that the following steps would apply to an iPad as well.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Tap on your name at the top of the Settings screen.
Step 3: Then, press the iCloud option.
Step 4: Tap on Show All.
Step 5: Now scroll down to locate the Safari option. Enable the toggle next to it. If the toggle is already turned on, turn it off by tapping on it. Then, re-enable the toggle to turn it on.
You’ve now enabled Safari iCloud sync on your iPhone/iPad. It is now time to repeat the process on your Mac.
iCloud Sync for Mac
Step 1: Click on the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
Step 2: Select the System Preferences option.
Step 3: Then, click on Apple ID.
Step 4: Choose the iCloud option in the left pane.
Step 5: Scroll down on the right pane till you find Safari. Then, tick the checkbox next to it. Should the toggle already be enabled, turn it off and re-enable it.
3. Login With the Same Apple ID on All Your Devices
One prerequisite for the bookmarks to sync across your Apple devices – the same Apple account on all the Apple devices. Here’s how you can check all the devices linked to your Apple ID.
Step 1: Click on the Apple logo on the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
Step 2: Select System Preferences.
Step 3: Click on Apple ID on the top-left side of the window.
Step 4: You will see the list of your Apple products signed in to your Apple ID on the bottom-left side.
If your devices don’t appear there, log in with the same Apple ID on your iPhone and Mac. Then, try seeing if the bookmarks are syncing. You can also use the universal clipboard feature across all devices.
4. Update Safari From the App Store
Every piece of software contains bugs and errors. These bugs tend to cause deficiencies in the smooth use of any software. Enter – software updates. Software updates could eliminate these bugs and errors in turn resolving the issue you’re facing.
So, Safari may be glitching due to a bug on your Mac. Update the Safari from the App Store on your Mac and check if your iCloud enables bookmark sync. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Open the App Store on your Mac.
Step 2: Click on the Updates section in the left pane.
Step 3: If an update is available for Safari, it’ll appear on that screen. Click on the Update button and wait for the newer version of the app to be installed.
5. Delete PLIST files of Safari
Deleting the PLIST file of an app on Mac is the equivalent of resetting the app’s preferences. So, this tip is as good as installing the app for the first time and setting it up. You could clear the PLIST files and start with a clean slate. See if this solution could cater to solving the issue of bookmark not syncing on your Mac. Here’s how to do that.
Step 1: Open a new Finder window on your Mac.
Step 2: Click on the Go option located at the top of your screen on the menu bar.
Step 3: Press and hold the Option key on your keyboard. You will see the Library option listed in the drop-down menu. Click on it.
Step 4: Scroll down and double-click on the Preferences folder to open it.
Step 5: In the list of files, find ‘com.apple.Safari.plist’ file and delete it.
Step 6: Open the Safari app and your Mac will create a new PLIST file for the app.
Sync in a Blink
Following these steps should help you sync your Safari bookmarks in the blink of an eye! Having your bookmarks synced across all devices can ease your workflow and can help you navigate through websites at a faster pace.

Safari iCloud Bookmarks Not Updating on Other Devices
Sometimes you may experience that Safari bookmarks are not syncing across devices. If you are using iCloud, your Safari bookmarks and your Reading List will stay up to date across all your Apple devices. For example, if you add a bookmark to your bookmarks (e.g., Favorites list) on your Mac, your Favorites list on your iPhone will also be automatically updated to reflect the change. If you are having issues using iCloud bookmarks or Reading List, this article can help. I list several steps you can try in order to fix your bookmark syncing issue.
I should note that Safari bookmarks in iCloud are end-to-end encrypted. This means that only you can access your bookmarks.
First things to check
Let’s make sure we cover the basics.
- Ensure that there are no iCloud outages . Go to the Apple System Status page and find the “iCloud Bookmarks & Tabs” option and check if there are any issues.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Mac: Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Date & Time.
- Make sure that you are using the same Apple ID on all of your devices.
- iCloud uses the Internet to work, thus if you have no Internet, Safari bookmarks will not sync.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > General > Software Update.
- Mac: Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings > [your name] > iCloud and ensure that Safari is enabled.
- Mac: Apple menu > System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud and ensure that Safari is selected.
- Restart your device(s) to see if Safari is showing bookmarks now.
Turn iCloud for Safari off, then on again
You can turn iCloud for Safari off and on. This will force iCloud to re-sync and may fix this problem. I was having this problem too, and this is what worked for me. Here is how:
iPhone or iPad
- Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Scroll down a little and find Safari.
- Toggle the switch off.
- A menu will appear saying “What would you like to do with the previously synced iCloud Safari data on your iPhone (or iPad)?” There will be two options: “Keep on My iPhone or iPad,” and “Delete from my iPhone or iPad.” If your Safari data is on another device already, choose Delete, if not, choose Keep.
- Wait a few seconds and then restart your iPhone or iPad.
- Again go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > and turn on Safari. You will be asked what you would like to do with existing local Safari data on your iPhone. Choose Merge.
- That’s it. Your Safari bookmarks will slowly appear as iCloud syncs data.
- On your Mac, open System Preferences and click Apple ID. Select iCloud from the left-side menu, then find Safari in the list.
- Uncheck the box next to Safari.
- Restart your Mac.
- Go to System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud and re-check the box next to Safari.
Now, iCloud Safari bookmarks should start working again.
In this article, I explained how you can fix the Safari bookmark syncing problem. I was having this issue too, and when I turned off, then on again iCloud for Safari in the iCloud settings, the problem was resolved. I hope the same fix works for you too.

Thank you! this finally worked for me. I had to choose “delete” all the data on my iPhone because “keep” did not fix the sync problem. But now both my iPhone and Mac are syncing Safari bookmarks. Thank you again.

Safari Bookmarks not syncing
Hello there!
i have recently ordered a new iPhone, as my last one got lost, so I have a new SIM card as well. I was able to use iCloud to transfer most of my data back.
However, Safari does not seem to be syncing between the iPhone I have now and my iPad. It used to do this for the old iPhone I had. I could even open the tabs page, scroll down, and see the tabs open on my iPad. This is no longer the case.
I was hoping to see if there is a way to fix this by any chance?

When your Safari bookmarks aren’t synchronizing properly across your Apple devices, it can disrupt your workflow and become a source of frustration. Whether you’re facing issues with bookmarks not updating or being out of order, or if you’re encountering unexpected additions or deletions, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve these sync issues.
Initial Steps to Address Safari Bookmark Sync Issues
Check Your Apple ID: Ensure that all devices are signed in with the same Apple ID. This is crucial for iCloud to sync your bookmarks across your devices effectively. Restart Devices: Sometimes, a simple restart of your devices can resolve syncing issues. This helps clear any temporary glitches that might be hindering the sync process. Toggle iCloud for Safari: Go to your device’s settings, navigate to your Apple ID, tap on iCloud, and toggle Safari off and then on again. This can often kickstart the sync process. Check Internet Connection: A stable Wi-Fi connection is necessary for iCloud to sync your bookmarks. Ensure your devices are connected to a reliable network. Update Your Devices: Running the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS can solve many sync-related issues. Developers regularly release updates to fix bugs and improve performance.
Advanced Troubleshooting Steps
Check iCloud for Windows Settings: For users who sync bookmarks with a Windows PC, ensure that the iCloud for Windows settings are configured correctly. Note that Microsoft Edge doesn’t support iCloud Bookmarks, so you might need to use a different browser like Chrome or Firefox for syncing. Manage Bookmarks via iCloud.com: Accessing your iCloud account via a web browser can give you more direct control over your bookmarks. You can manually delete or rearrange bookmarks here, and these changes should reflect across your devices. Delete and Re-sync: If you’re facing persistent issues, consider deleting all bookmarks from your devices and then re-syncing from a device where the bookmarks are correctly organized. This can be a bit drastic but effective in resolving major sync discrepancies.
Community Experiences and Solutions
Many users have shared their experiences and solutions in community forums. For instance, discussions on platforms like MacRumors and Reddit reveal a range of issues and creative solutions. Common advice includes disabling and re-enabling iCloud sync for Safari, ensuring all devices operate on the latest software versions, and even resetting network settings. Could you help with my problem?
My phone, iPads are all in sync with iCloud for Safari favorites/bookmarks on each device. The problem is favorites/bookmarks made on the Mac are apparently not reflected in iCloud and therefore not seen on iPhone and iPad. To make matters worse, the favorites/bookmarks in iCloud, iPhone and iPads overwrite those on Safari on Mac. I am constantly saving the .plist file and replacing the newly overwritten .plist file so I don’t lose the new bookmarks I’ve added to the Mac.
I’ve tried everything I can think of. iCloud will change Mac safari bookmarks, but Mac Safari bookmark changes are not propagated to iCloud.
Safari bookmarks not syncing
My Safari bookmarks stopped syncing a few weeks ago between a MacBook, an iPad and an iPhone all on the latest betas.
I tried everything I could find online short of wiping the devices: Toggling Safari sync on and off, deleting all bookmarks and so forth. I even tried this . Still any bookmarks I add on any device will not show up on any other device.
YES I am signed into the same iCloud account, everything else is still syncing fine
YES I restarted the devices
YES they are up to date (all on the latest betas)
I have the same issue, but worst; all bookmarks on iPhone and iPad just disappeared. Nothing syncs.

Syncing Microsoft Edge and Safari bookmarks via icloud
With my previous laptop, i could sync my chrome bookmarks on my laptop with the safari bookmarks in my ipad using icloud and choosing 'chrome' in the browser selection in the icloud application in the laptop (there are 3 choices there: internet explorer, Firefox and Chrome). That worked fine.
Now I have a new laptop with Microsoft Edge on it. Suppose I import all the bookmarks from Chrome to Edge, can i now sync the Edge bookmarks with the safari bookmarks on the ipad using icloud in the same way. I am asking because there is no "Edge" entry in the icloud application. What shall i choose (if possible at all..) in this case (IE-?, Firefox-No!, Chrome-No!). Is this doable or shall i stay with chrome on new laptop and safari on ipad ?

Hi sh1406 ,
Thanks for your post in Microsoft Community.
It sounds like that you currently need to sync bookmarks to the Microsoft Edge. As Chrome and iClound are not a product of Microsoft, we cannot provide you with more help, but here are some suggestions:
Since there is no option to sync directly to the Edge, it seems like you have to take two steps.Since IE and Edge are the products of Microsoft, you can try to sync IE first and then sync to Edge. And Since Edge and Chrome are the same core, you can try to sync Chrome first and then sync to Edge.
If direct synchronization does not solve the problem, you can try to export bookmarks from other browsers and then import Edge.
For this,kindly check:

Thanks for your feedback.
This is easily doable, though not necessarily intuitive. Since Microsoft Edge can install Chrome extensions, you simply need to install the iCloud Chrome extension in Edge ( iCloud Bookmarks - Chrome Web Store (google.com) ) and select Chrome in the iCloud application (you might want to remove the extension from your Chrome application in order to prevent conflicts).
I've just used this setup successfully to sync Edge bookmarks with Safari on iOS (iPhone and iPad); it seems the iCloud application accepts the sync instructions from Edge because it is the same engine (Chromium).

For the time beeing , i decided to stay with chrome/safari combo, since it works fine and sufficiently fast for me and i am familiar with it.
I will keep your post anyway if i need it in the future.

If you are a frequent user of Apple devices, you might find yourself needing to transfer bookmarks from one computer to another. Whether you’ve purchased a new MacBook or want to synchronize your bookmarks across multiple devices, Safari provides a straightforward solution. In this article, we will guide you through the process of transferring bookmarks to another computer Safari and answer some related FAQs.
Transferring Bookmarks to Another Computer Safari
To transfer your bookmarks from one computer to another using Safari, follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Export Bookmarks on the Source Computer
1. Open Safari on your computer from which you want to transfer the bookmarks. 2. Click on the “Bookmarks” option in the menu bar and select “Edit Bookmarks” from the drop-down menu. 3. A new window will appear displaying all your bookmarks. Make sure to organize them if needed. 4. Next, click on the “File” option in the menu bar and choose “Export Bookmarks…” from the drop-down menu. 5. Choose a location to save the exported bookmarks file and click “Save”. 6. Your bookmarks will be saved as an HTML file on your computer.
Step 2: Import Bookmarks on the Destination Computer
1. On your new computer, open Safari and select “File” from the menu bar. 2. Choose “Import From” and select “Bookmarks HTML File” from the options. 3. Locate the bookmarks HTML file you saved from the source computer and click “Import”. 4. Safari will import your bookmarks, and they will be added to your Safari bookmarks list.

If your Mac is connected to the internet but suddenly stops sending or receiving email, you should generally try again later, and if necessary work with your email provider to resolve. If you're using Apple's iCloud Mail, learn how to resolve issues with iCloud Mail .
Check for status messages
If the status is Network Offline, make sure that your Mac is connected to the internet .
If the status is Login Failed, check with your email service provider (ESP) to be sure that your account is set up correctly on your Mac.
If Mail asks for your password, but entering the password doesn't help, find out why your email provider is rejecting your password .
If your email service is experiencing a temporary outage, your email provider might have a status message on their website. For example, Apple's system status page shows the status of iCloud Mail. Status pages are also available for other email services, such as Gmail and Outlook . Some brief service outages might not appear on a system status page, so you might want to try again later.
Test using webmail
Many email providers offer webmail, which is a way to use email with a web browser such as Safari, instead of with an email app such as Mail. For example, if you're using an iCloud Mail account, you can use iCloud.com to send and receive email.
Webmail is a good way to verify that your account is valid, but it doesn't mean that your account is set up correctly in Mail on your Mac. Your email provider can help you verify your email settings and check for other issues that affect sending or receiving email.
Remove your email account, then add it back
If no other solutions work, follow these steps:
Remove your email account in Mail.
Add your email account in Mail again. When adding the account, make sure that you choose the correct email service provider for your email address .
Try to send and receive email.
If you can't see email messages in Mail on Mac

The Best Way Yet to Measure Browser Performance">Speedometer 3.0: The Best Way Yet to Measure Browser Performance
Mar 11, 2024
by Ryosuke Niwa
As announced on browserbench.org today, in collaboration with other browser engine developers, Apple’s WebKit team is excited to introduce Speedometer 3.0 , a major update that better reflects the Web of today. It’s built together by the developers of all major browser engines: Blink, Gecko, and WebKit with hundreds of contributions from companies like Apple, Google, Intel, Microsoft, and Mozilla. This post is a deep dive into how the collaborative Speedometer project improved the benchmark’s measurements methods and test content.
To recap history, in 2014, the WebKit team at Apple released the Speedometer browser benchmark , designed to measure the responsiveness of websites and web apps.
The original Speedometer simulated user interactions in web applications, driving TodoMVC sample apps written using different JavaScript frameworks to add, complete, and remove todo items. It was unlike other DOM or web app benchmarks publicly available at the time. These older benchmarks were mostly collections of micro-benchmarks, and didn’t reflect how DOM APIs were used in real web apps, or how individual APIs interacted with the rest of the web browser engine. Speedometer quickly became an important tool for performance measurement and tuning not just in WebKit but also in other browser engines.
In 2018 the WebKit team, in collaboration with Google’s Chrome team, released Speedometer 2.0 , updated to use the latest frameworks and libraries available at the time. The Speedometer benchmark has since gained even more popularity among browser engines as a guide for optimization, and among independent testers and reviewers to compare different devices, operating systems, and browsers.
Today’s release of Speedometer 3.0 marks a major step forward in web browser performance testing. It improves the accuracy of measurement and measures the performance of a wide variety of contents.
Cross-Browser Collaboration
Speedometer 3.0’s release is a result of the collaboration among browser developers to improve the Web as a whole together. Much as Interop 2024 represents joint work to test and improve standards compliance, Speedometer 3.0 is a joint effort to test and improve browser performance.
Where previous Speedometer versions were developed as part of the WebKit project, Speedometer 3.0 has been developed and released under a joint multi-stakeholder governance model including the three major engine browsers: Blink, Gecko, and WebKit, and the repository has received hundreds of open source contributions since the original announcement in December 2022 . This collaboration better ensures fairness in measurement and workload composition. And together, the group created a shared vision for the benchmark.
Improved Test Harness
We’ve improved the way Speedometer measures runtime performance. Prior Speedometer versions measured the time to run a test script synchronously as “sync” time; and the time until a zero-delay timer scheduled at the end of “sync” work fires as “async” time, as shown in the following diagram:
However, this method sometimes misses important work that browser engines do in response to script-driven changes, because synchronous tasks and the zero-delay timer are scheduled without considering the timing of rendering updates. It also didn’t capture any work frameworks delay until the next requestAnimationFrame (rAF) callback, a common technique in modern frameworks. The following diagram illustrates how important work could be missed by the time calculations.
Speedometer 3.0 takes advantage of the fact that all browser engines have adopted the HTML5 event loop model for updating the webpage rendering. It measures test scripts within a requestAnimationFrame callback as “sync” time, and the time to fire zero-delay timer scheduled in a second requestAnimationFrame as “async” time:
Because the zero-delay timer is now scheduled in a second requestAnimationFrame, it’s guaranteed to be fired after all the zero-delay timers scheduled during the synchronous portion of the test had fired. Thanks to HTML5’s event loop processing model, browser engines update the rendering of web pages after all requestAnimationFrame are called before the next zero-delay timer fires. These changes greatly improved Speedometer’s ability to accurately measure the runtime of synchronous work and asynchronous work browsers do in response to script that handles user events.
The test harness has also been rewritten to use modern JavaScript features like modules, native promises, let & const, async & await, and class syntax, which were not widely available at the time Speedometer 1.0 was first written.
Like its precursors, Speedometer 3.0 sums up the runtime taken to simulate user actions such as adding todo items, completing them, and removing them per each workload, and computes the geometric mean of the totals across different workloads. The final score is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the reciprocal of the geometric mean:
Adjustment to Score
Since Speedometer’s benchmark content was last updated in 2018, web browsers have gotten increasingly better at handling Speedometer content. Moreover, new hardware, such as Apple Silicon Macs, continues to push the boundary of what’s possible in computing. Where originally scores were scaled to be under 100, modern browsers now can score over 500 on the fastest devices. To make scores easier to compare and to make room for future improvements, we’ve adjusted the score so that a typical web browser will get a score in the 20-30 range to start out.
Updated UI Frameworks
Now let’s take a look at the test content in Speedometer 3. Like the past versions of Speedometer, version 3.0 includes TodoMVC-based todo apps that emulate adding, completing, and removing todo items. To better represent the modern Web, the most widely used JavaScript UI frameworks were identified from the HTTP Archive in March 2023:
The monthly downloads in NPM was also taken into account to find frameworks with high momentum:
Based on these data points, we’ve included the following JavaScript frameworks in our todo apps: Angular , Backbone , jQuery , Lit , Preact , React , React+ Redux , Svelte , and Vue . For each framework, the most commonly used version at the time was picked. Todo implementations written in vanilla JavaScript using ES5, ES6, and web components are also included.
Complex DOM Versions
In addition, Speedometer 3.0 includes “complex DOM” versions of some of the TodoMVC applications. In these complex DOM versions, each todo app is embedded inside a UI structure which mimics a web application with many deeply nested DOM nodes and plenty of CSS rules. Even though the benchmark still emulates the same set of operations, doing so in the context of more DOM elements and CSS rules adds work and captures additional performance bottlenecks.
In order to ensure the variety of performance scenarios to be tested, Speedometer 3.0 includes 6 simple DOM todo applications and 6 complex DOM todo applications.
Broader Content
Together, these changes to todo apps dramatically improved the coverage of the benchmark. But Speedometer 3.0 takes it a step further and includes entirely new kinds of applications.
Speedometer 3.0 includes two test apps that mimic typical news sites, built using the popular single page application frameworks Next.js and Nuxt . It emulates user actions such as clicking on menu items and navigating to another page in the single page app setup.
Speedometer 3.0 also includes four charting applications based on Observable Plot , chart.js , React stockcharts , and WebKit’s performance dashboards . Observable Plot and React Stockcharts are based on D3 and test manipulating SVG-based graphics. Chart.js and WebKit’s performance dashboards test drawing canvas-based graphics.
Finally, Speedometer 3.0 has added two text editing applications: a JavaScript code editor built with CodeMirror and a WYSIWYG editor built with TipTap . In both scenarios, it emulates the steps to create a new editable region, loading a large amount of text, and syntax highlighting or boldening text:
The addition of these new applications dramatically broadens the scope of what Speedometer 3.0 measures, and provide new opportunities for browser engines to optimize a broad spectrum of features like JavaScript, style, layout, graphics, and DOM.
Future Work
Today marks a remarkable milestone for the Web platform. Speedometer 3.0 sets a whole new standard for measuring web browser performance. As browser developers optimize their engines, this will expand the horizon of what Web developers can achieve in the years to come. Because the goal of the Speedometer benchmark is to reflect the real-world Web as much as possible, we’re expecting this benchmark to evolve over time. We’ll be regularly updating the list of frameworks to be tested, and periodically updating the tested framework’s versions to reflect the real world usage. You can try Speedometer 3 benchmark on browserbench.org . If you have any feedback or questions, feel free to file issues on Github .
Google and Apple's rumored partnership could upend the AI industry

Good morning! A controversial new study suggests intermittent fasting increases your chance of dying of cardiovascular illness. But critics of the research, which hasn't been published in a peer-reviewed journal, are skeptical of the findings .
In today's big story, we're looking at what a potential partnership between Google and Apple over AI features would mean for both companies and the wider industry.
What's on deck:
Markets: Longtime Goldman exec Stephanie Cohen details her decision to depart for Cloudflare .
Tech: Instagram isn't losing the social-media wars after all .
Business: New research suggests a recession has at least one benefit: increasing our lifespan .
But first, a tech dream team.
If this was forwarded to you, sign up here.
The big story
Google, apple, ai.
Two of the world's biggest tech companies are reportedly discussing a partnership that would upend the AI industry.
Apple is considering integrating Google's AI model, Gemini, into the iPhone .
Nothing is finalized, so the potential deal terms aren't clear. But the broad strokes of the arrangement could see Apple license Gemini to power new features on iPhone software as soon as this year, according to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
The rumors come at the perfect time for both sides.
For weeks, Google has been publicly trashed over Gemini being too "woke." The criticism was so loud CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the company "got it wrong" in a memo. More broadly, insiders have questioned if Google can still be considered the tech world's vanguard of "cool."
Meanwhile, Apple has drawn attention for what it's not doing in AI. The company has been noticeably quiet around its AI plans compared to peers like Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon.
CEO Tim Cook alluded to a bigger announcement about the tech later this year at Apple's annual shareholder meeting. But the company seems to be playing catch up, as it reallocated resources from its scrapped electric vehicle to focus on generative AI .
By teaming up, Google's Gemini gets a much-needed vote of confidence and access to the iPhone's sizable user base. And Apple keeps pace in the AI race by outsourcing some of the messy bits of the business, Business Insider's Hasan Chowdhury writes.
Wall Street seems to agree. Both companies' shares rallied off the back of the report , BI's Phil Rosen writes.
Apple and Google have a history of successful partnerships.
Google has paid Apple to be the default search provider on the iPhone for years. Apple gets a nice chunk of change — reportedly $18 billion in 2021 . Google maintains its place as the go-to search engine on the internet. It's a win-win.
The tie-up isn't without its critics, though. It's a key piece of the Department of Justice's lawsuit against Google for "anticompetitive and exclusionary" behavior in a landmark trial for Big Tech that kicked off last year.
So even if Apple and Google come to an agreement, they could still face some serious regulatory pushback.(And to be clear, Bloomberg's report mentioned Apple had discussions with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, about a similar arrangement, so there's still a long way to go.)
But if the history of Apple-Google deals has taught us anything, their combined power is almost unmatched.
3 things in markets
A Goldman goodbye from one of the top women on Wall Street. Stephanie Cohen is departing the bank to join Cloudflare as its first-ever chief strategy officer . She reflected on her 20-plus year career at Goldman, her advice to the bank's executives, and why she's jumping headfirst into tech.
Wall Street is feeling optimistic about a soft landing. It's "risk-on" for many investors, who are betting the economy will be fine. The Street is mostly bullish thanks to strong economic growth and the prospect of interest rate cuts being in the pipeline .
Japan's central bank raised interest rates for the first time in 17 years. The last time the Bank of Japan hiked borrowing costs was in February 2007. The market's response to its move was muted , with Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei 225 index closing 0.7% higher on Tuesday.
3 things in tech
Instagram is beating TikTok. Instagram far outpaced TikTok in global downloads last year, using its core photo feature and reels to win over consumers. Still, people are spending more time on TikTok than on Instagram.
Here's what creators were talking about at SXSW. While AI was a popular topic of discussion, many panels failed to talk about its downsides. Meanwhile, some creators and employees said they were "bored" of talking about a potential TikTok ban.
Nvidia unveiled its next-generation chip. CEO Jensen Huang revealed the Blackwell B200 GPU at the semiconductor giant's "Woodstock of AI" event on Monday. The chips "are the engine to power this new industrial revolution," he said.
3 things in business
Recessions have a weird benefit: They help us live longer. New research found the worse the economy is, the longer we live. That's because it cuts down on pollution — with less activity (fewer people driving to work, factories and offices slowing down), the air gets cleaner.
5-Hour Energy's billionaire owner elbowed his way into publishing Sports Illustrated — now he's lost it. Late last year, Manoj Bhargava took control of Sports Illustrated publisher Arena Group, swiftly laying off dozens of employees. His erratic behavior and failure to pay a licensing fee , however, resulted in him losing SI.
Reddit's CEO defended his massive pay package. Steve Huffman said in a video Q&A that his $193 million compensation package was based on both salary and stock. Some Quora, Reddit, and X users feel the amount is too high for a platform that doesn't pay its moderators and hasn't been profitable thus far.
