If you think a vacation is out of your reach, think again. Some airlines and online travel agencies have services that allow you to book a trip now and pay for it over time.

Affirm, PayPal, Uplift, and Klarna are among the book-now, pay-later services travel companies and airlines offer. Here, we break down the basics of these and airlines' own "BNPL" options so you can secure flights when the prices are lowest, even if you don't want to pay for them in full upfront.

You can also pay in installments through Klarna. Download the Klarna extension for Chrome or the app and you should see a pink "K" icon that will show you financing options. AeroMexico takes PayPal, which means you can use PayPal Credit to split up payments if you're approved.

Can I make a payment outside of my payment plan?

Yes, you can do this anytime from your online account under the payments tab. An additional payment does not take the place of any upcoming automatic payments. Your new balance will be distributed evenly over the remaining payments.

How do I use a Future Travel Voucher?

Future Travel Vouchers issued in 2020 or 2021 can be applied to any travel booked prior to 12/31/2022, for departures before 9/30/2024. Just book a trip like you usually would and then start a chat on our website to apply the voucher to your order.

What if I switch trips or move my trip to a later date?

All completed payments will be applied to your new trip and any remaining balance will be redistributed evenly over your new time frame.

What payment methods do you accept?

You can pay using a credit/debit card (Visa, MasterCard) or by using a checking account.

Is Affirm a loan?

Technically speaking, yes. Our financing partner, Affirm, will lend you the money to pay for your trip, and you’ll pay them back over time.

Does Affirm perform a credit check?

Affirm only performs a ‘soft’ credit check to help verify your identity and determine your eligibility for financing. Checking your eligibility will not affect your credit score.

Can I pay for my trip in pennies?

Please don’t.

If I refer a friend, do I get a discount on my trip?

Actually, yes. We have group and referral discounts to make it even easier to afford your trip. Learn more about these discounts here.

How To Set Up Payment Plans As A Travel Agent

If you’re a travel agent, payment plans can be an excellent tool to add to your arsenal.

In addition to making travel more accessible for clients, offering the right payment plans can actually increase your business revenue.

Not sure where to get started? Keep reading.

In this blog, we’ll provide a step-by-step guide on how to set up payment plans effectively:

Step 1: Understand the Legal and Financial Regulations

Before you can begin offering payment plans, you need to make sure you understand all of the  legal and financial regulations related to installment payments and payment processing for the travel industry .

Because these rules may vary a bit from place to place and business to business, we recommend consulting with a legal professional if necessary to ensure compliance with local laws.

Step 2: Choose a Payment Structure

Once you’ve researched the legalities of payment plans, you’ll need to decide which payment structure you'll offer to your clients.

While the option you choose depends on your business structure and priorities, common options include splitting the total cost into equal monthly payments or establishing specific payment dates and amounts.

Once you've decided on a payment structure, provide written documentation for your customer. This document should outline the payment schedule, amounts, due dates, and any applicable fees.

Step 3: Select Payment Methods

Next, determine which payment method(s) you'll accept for the installment payments. Depending on the payment processing tool you’re using, this could include credit/debit cards, bank transfers, ACH transfers, or eCheck payments.

To streamline the payment process, we recommend using a travel agency payment processing platform that supports automated, online payments. The right payment platform can help manage payment schedules, decrease the risk of fraud or chargebacks, and streamline the payment process.

Step 4: Booking and Deposit

Now that the payment terms have been established, you’ll need to collect a deposit to secure the booking.

This non-refundable deposit typically covers any upfront costs, including but not limited to flights, accommodations, and tours. Deposit amounts vary depending on the total cost of the trip.

Step 5: Payment Plan Fulfillment

Once the customer has made all the payments outlined in their installment agreement, you should provide them with a written notice stating that the payment plan has been fulfilled, and that the installment agreement is terminated. Make sure that both you and your customer keep a copy of this document for your records.

United Vacations logo

$250 down, pay later

Reserve your vacation for as little as $250 down.

United Vacations allows you to reserve your vacation from just $250 per person and pay the rest later. United Vacations offers you the flexibility to apply multiple payments over time, or even pay using multiple credit cards. The final payment is due at least 45 days prior to departure. The amount of your deposit includes a portion of your flights, your hotel stay and the full cost of any vacation add-ons, such as show tickets, excursions or travel protection.

How do I put as little as $250 down and pay later?

If you are booking your vacation more than six weeks in advance, the deposit option will appear during the booking process on step three of checkout. At this point, you can even schedule automatic final payments or set up email reminders. The actual deposit amount required varies based on the destination and hotel accommodations selected.

Scheduling automatic final payment

Select a final payment date more than 45 days before your departure date and your credit card will automatically be charged on that date. If you've entered multiple credit cards for your initial deposit, select the corresponding number in the Payment # field (a "1" in this box will charge the first credit card listed, a "2" will charge the second credit card listed, and so on).

Scheduling an email reminder

It's easy to set up an email reminder that will notify you when payment is due on your vacation. This makes it especially easy when you are making multiple payments toward the full vacation price. Just follow the instructions during step three of checkout to schedule your email reminder.

The actual deposit amount required varies based on the destination and hotel accommodations selected. Destinations outside of North America require a $350 per person deposit. Some special holiday/convention periods (or other exceptions) may apply where full payment is required at time of booking. Vacation cancellations/revisions are subject to penalties outlined in the  Terms and Conditions . If you prefer, you may pay for some or your entire final vacation amount due before the final payment date (you can do this either by logging in to the account you created at time of booking or by calling us at the phone number above).

How Much Do Travel Agents Make? Fora’s Full Guide

Fora Author Fora Travel

The Modern Travel Agency

Fora Travel

https://www.foratravel.com/the-journal/how-much-do-travel-agents-make

How much do travel agents make? What factors go into how much a travel agent — or as we prefer, travel advisor — earns? We’re telling all.

Alternatively, you can learn exactly how much you can make by becoming a Fora Advisor . Sign up today and we’ll answer all your questions.

First, is there a high demand for travel agents? (Hint: yes!)

And demand is growing. Since travel restrictions were lifted after the COVID-19 pandemic, more people than ever are going on vacations and business trips (check out jobs where you travel ) — more importantly, they’re smarter about how they go about it. And there’s no better way to book a trip than to use a travel advisor to get awesome perks, deals and the kind of personal touches that turns a good trip into a great one.

(Wondering how to become a travel agent ? Our guide has you covered.)

How do travel agents get compensated?

There are a few different ways travel advisors earn income, and the source typically depends on the service. Here’s how it breaks down.

(Wondering about startup and upkeep costs? Check out our guide to how much it costs to become a travel agent .)

Travel partners (or suppliers, in industry lingo) pay commissions: think hotels, travel insurance, rental cars, cruise incentives, tours…

Image courtesy of Turtle Bay Resort

A large portion of a travel advisor’s income comes from commissions, which are a percentage — usually between 10 and 15 percent — of whatever service their client is benefiting from, be it a hotel reservation, travel insurance and so on. (Here are 5 types of bookings you can make as a Fora Advisor that aren’t hotels .)

Suppliers, such as hotel brands, cruise lines and rental car providers pay these commissions; and Fora Advisors don’t charge their clients for commissionable services. In other words? Fora Advisors get paid, and their clients don't have to pay anything extra.

The cool thing is that many of the best hotels and services know that happy travel advisors will send new clients back, so the suppliers will throw in complimentary perks to sweeten the deal. This is why Fora Advisors can offer the same rate as an online travel agency for a hotel room at, say, Virgin Hotels New Orleans (one of the most unique places to stay in New Orleans , by the way), yet offer cool extras for their clients at no additional cost.

Our guide to how much do travel agents make per booking gets into the details of the process if you’re curious.

Clients pay planning & service fees: non-commissionable bookings, vacation packages & custom itineraries…

Besides commissions, planning and service fees are the other major sources of income for travel advisors.

Why might advisors charge fees? In most cases, an advisor may charge a fee to develop a custom itinerary for a client. In this case, the client compensates the advisor for their time, much in the same way one would pay a financial advisor.

At Fora, it’s generally up to the advisor to decide how much to charge (if at all) for custom itineraries.

How much do travel agents make exactly? It depends

There’s no simple answer to this question, because Fora Advisors have the flexibility to work as much or as little as they want. Some treat their advisor position as a travel side hustle , only spending a few hours per month on booking rooms for friends and family, while others make a very lucrative living.

Can you make ‘good’ money as a travel agent? You bet

Is being a travel agent worth it ? Fora Advisors will say yes. Many top Fora Advisors earn six figures per year. Again, when you join Fora, you can work as much or as little as you'd like, so the money earned will vary, but regardless, we'll teach you how to maximize your earnings.

Ready to start your lucrative career in travel? Become a Fora Advisor today .

What’s the average travel agent salary in the USA?

We can’t speak for all travel agencies, but some of the top Fora travel advisor salaries are measured in seven figures. And while such a salary is quite a bit above average, these top earners put in a lot of work, and have been doing this for a while.

On the flip side, plenty of Fora Advisors treat their travel business like a side hustle on top of their day job, earning an extra couple of hundred to several thousand dollars per month.

Factors that might affect how much a travel agent makes

A lot of factors go into how much travel agents make per month. Here are some of the most common.

Remote vs. brick-and-mortar travel agencies

There are a lot of advantages to becoming a travel agent online , but the biggest might be the substantial difference in overhead.

Travel agents who work from brick-and-mortar establishments have to pay rent or property taxes for office space. Remote travel agents only have to worry about internet connection and a comfy spot to sit.

In either case, you have to factor in your expenses when calculating how much you’re making as a travel agent, and remote agents have a clear advantage.

Independent vs. employed travel agents

Let's break it down. There are essentially three different types of travel agent jobs .

Employed travel advisors — that is, advisors who work for a company that sells travel — typically earn base pay, but there are a lot of trade-offs that make this business model less attractive to the advisor. Most importantly, there may be caps on the number of clients you have and / or reduced commissions that severely impact your bottom line.

One potential positive: marketing resources may be available through the company, but oftentimes, they’re not exactly modern in their approach (unlike Fora's!). And finally, employed travel advisors generally have to adhere to a traditional nine-to-five schedule — with little flexibility.

Fully independent travel advisors, on the other hand, can enjoy all the flexibility they want. But, as business owners, they also have to consider things like licensing fees, marketing materials, business insurance and so on that employed advisors don’t have to worry about. These fees and extra expenses can dampen profit margins, and can be prohibitive for prospective advisors who don’t necessarily want to risk the startup costs.

Our guide on how to start a travel agency from scratch provides more details, but we’ll be frank: there’s a much easier path to making great money as a travel agent.

The third option (and sweet spot)? Join Fora. Fora Advisors are technically independent travel agents — sometimes referred to as independent contractors — except they operate under Fora’s licenses and have access to an incredible wealth of resources (including extensive travel agent training ).

Plus, thanks to Fora's global network of travel partners, our advisors unlock tons of exclusive client perks at thousands of hotels.

Want to learn more? Here’s how to become an independent travel agent through Fora.

In a literal sense, how do travel agents get paid?

Across the industry, travel advisors are paid via the old-school, commission-check-in-the-mail method. At Fora, travel advisors are paid via direct deposit. And our advisors don't have to chase down their commission payments. We take care of all that.

Read about how travel agents get paid for more details.

Are there ways to maximize the earnings a travel agent makes?

Certainly. How much a travel agent makes depends heavily on factors like their niche, host agency (if applicable) and — of course — travel planning skills.

Can’t wait to start your travel career? Become a Fora Advisor .

1. Consider adopting a niche

A niche can go a long way in boosting how much a travel agent makes because it gives them a focus. Rather than trying to be good at everything, niche travel agents become great at only one or two aspects of travel — at least to start. This allows them to build a wealth of knowledge in their niche that will impress clients, potentially drawing in business from new clients seeking a similar trip.

At Fora, there’s no limit to the type of niches an advisor adopts. You could specialize in selling cruises, Disney vacations, trips to a certain location (such as Las Vegas or Barcelona) — whatever you’re most passionate about.

(BTW: learn how to become a cruise travel agent or how to become a Disney travel agent .)

2. Expand your partnerships with hotel reps, tour operators and other travel-related services

Image courtesy of The Rubens at the Palace

Incentives like VIP hotel perks — complimentary hotel upgrades, meals, etc. — give travel advisors an edge over online travel agencies (OTAs) like Booking.com. As such, expanding these partnerships allows travel advisors to offer a wider range of trip benefits while remaining competitive.

Fora Advisors can unlock awesome perks for their clients at over 4,500 hotels around the world and counting. And Fora’s HQ is constantly working to expand its network of partnerships.

3. Work with a travel company that cares about your success

This may be a shameless plug, but our advisors will back us up on this one. Just check out our advisor-sourced guide to the best reasons to become a Fora Advisor .

In any case, your choice of host agency is critical. Plenty of old-school agencies essentially throw their advisors into the wild, only stepping in if sales quotas aren’t met.

At Fora, we offer unwavering support to all our advisors, plus loads of awesome resources, including a bevy of marketing materials, thorough travel agent training and access to an engaged community filled with travel experts.

Here are a few insider tips for how to be a successful travel advisor .

4. Give your clients the star treatment (because thoughtful advisors will get repeat business)

Possibly the most important factor affecting how much a travel agent makes: their customer service skills.

The simple truth is that clients will only use your services if you actually help them. Putting the time and effort into making sure your clients have an amazing experience will pay dividends later. Not only will you likely win their future business, but you could win the business of their family members, friends and peers, too.

(Read about how travel agents get clients .)

5. Keep at it: being a travel agent can be stressful, but so worth it

Finally, patience and dedication have a dramatic effect on how much travel agents make.

Chances are, you’re not going to start with a dozen clients planning 20 trips. It takes a lot of time and effort to get to that point, but if you can, you’ll find that travel planning can be a very rewarding career.

Breaking it Down: What’s in A Travel Agent’s Salary?

Fora Travel logo

Fora Travel

So, you have a passion for travel. You love helping friends and family plan their vacations with cool tips and recs, and you’re thinking about turning this passion into a career (or side hustle). But you may be wondering how to monetize, and asking “where does a travel agent salary come from?”

We’re breaking it all down below. Plus, you might be surprised to learn that earning a salary as a travel agent is seamless, especially with the support and tech tools of a modern travel agency like Fora.

(Just getting started? Learn how to become a travel agent .)

The 2 most common ways to earn a travel agent salary

The vast majority of revenue a travel agent pulls in comes from two sources: commissions and service fees. Let’s break it down.

1. Commissions: the bread & butter of a travel agent’s salary

Commissions are paid by suppliers (such as hotels, cruises, tour companies) to a travel agent, for booking their services on behalf of a client. The commission is a percentage of the sale.

Here’s some behind-the-scenes. Travel industry suppliers pay advisors commission, because booking with a travel agent directly delivers a higher quality, more reliable client, as compared to big travel sites like Booking.com. Additionally, the supplier is able to keep more of the profit than they would if the client booked through an online travel site, which are known to take a much higher distribution fee. More importantly, if your clients are happy with the service, you’re more likely to send future clients back to the same supplier, setting up a potential revenue stream for them.

This transaction model is also far less expensive than what the supplier might have paid for traditional advertising, so it’s an easy expense to incorporate the travel agent in.

What’s commissionable? Hotel bookings, travel insurance, car rentals, tours… (hint: a lot)

All sorts of travel experiences are commissionable, not just hotel reservations. Car rentals, chauffeur services, event tickets, cruises — the list goes on. Check out Fora’s guide to the types of bookings you can make as a Fora Advisor (that aren’t hotels) for more details.

It’s also worth noting that the best travel agents earn their salary smartly, and sometimes that means avoiding less valuable commissions. Booking economy airline tickets for a client, for example, can often be more trouble than it’s worth. The margins are slim and the complexity of air travel — delays, cancellations — means booking flights for a client can introduce more problems than it solves.

2. Planning & service fees: the icing on the cake of a travel agent salary

Planning and service fees account for how travel agents make money from just about everything that’s not commissionable. It’s the money (aka travel agent salary) clients pay you to provide something of value, such as building a custom itinerary or making a reservation for a travel experience that isn’t commissionable — you should still be compensated for your time and expertise, after all.

Why do travel agents charge fees for things like custom itineraries?

Again, this goes back to being paid for your efforts.

The cool thing is, many clients are happy to pay for your expertise. You’re adding value to their trip they likely wouldn’t have received otherwise, whether it’s the convenience of not having to do the legwork themselves (freeing up their time), highlighting some sort of experience they wouldn’t have encountered or providing your insider intel and expertise honed from personal experience or research.

How much money do travel agents make?

In addition to the question, “what’s in a travel agent’s salary?” you’re probably wondering “how much do travel agents make?”

We can’t speak for other agencies, but Fora travel advisor salaries vary wildly, depending on whether it’s a full-time focus or side hustle. At the end of the day, how much you earn is correlated to how much you book. For instance, if you book a family cruise in the tens of thousands of dollars, your commission will be substantial. You could also get the same commission by handling individual hotel bookings, but at a higher amount.

Top travel advisors can make well into six figures. Meanwhile, some advisors focus on booking travel for their friends and family purely as a side gig, and may earn an extra $10k each year, for example. There’s no wrong way to make money as a travel agent (with Fora, at least).

And remember, building your book of business is an entrepreneurial journey. It takes time; you'll start smaller but can grow over time. And at Fora — between our resources, tools & community, – we're here to support you every step of the way.

How much do travel agents make per booking? Do travel agents get paid hourly?

While rare, some agencies do pay their travel agents an hourly rate as part of a travel agent salary. At Fora, we prefer flexibility, meaning our advisors work whenever they want, and as much as they want. A lot of Fora Advisors are part-timers who enjoy careers in other fields.

Fora Advisors make their travel agent salary via commission, which is split between the advisor – Fora collects a small percentage. Our entry-level commission split for Fora Advisors is 70%.

As for how much travel agents make per booking , traditional commission rates hover between 10 and 15 percent, however, they can be as low as 7% and even as high as 28% (we see you, cruise companies).

To break it down with some easy numbers, if you’re booking a hotel room that costs 1k per night. With an average commission of 15%, the total amount earned is $150. Fora Advisors would keep $105 of that. Fora keeps $45 as the host agency.

And remember: unlike many other host agencies, Fora handles all commission tracking and payments (thanks to our all-in-one, integrated booking platform ), so you get paid without lifting a finger.

How do Fora Advisors maximize their commissionable revenue?

There are a lot of ways Fora Advisors boost their travel agent salary. Here’s how.

(P.S. Looking for more reasons to become a Fora Advisor ? Hear what existing Fora travel advisors have to say.)

Enticing travelers with premium incentives (like hotel perks) is one of the best ways Fora travel agents earn their salary

Through a variety of supplier partnerships (as of publish date, over 4,500), Fora Advisors offer awesome perks to their clients that sweeten their travel experience.

For example, some of the perks at the coolest hotels in Downtown NYC include complimentary hotel credits that can be put toward spa treatments or meals. This means the client is getting much more value out of their stay (complimentary meals, upgraded rooms, VIP status, etc.), so it’s a win-win.

Perks and incentives aren’t limited to hotels, by the way. Virgin Voyages travel agents , for instance, can score early ship boarding and onboard credits for their clients.

Some Fora Advisors have a niche, like group, corporate or other specialized types of travel

A niche can be a great way for travel agents to make a higher salary.

Luxury travel agents cater to discerning explorers who might prefer to stay at world-class hotels (like ritzy hotels in Dubai or Grand Cayman resorts ). Disney travel agents earn commissions on entire vacation packages. And travel agents who specialize in group bookings can pull in substantial commissions for booking event venues, whole hotel floors and so on (read more about mastering the art of group bookings ).

As a host agency, Fora provides a ton of support to help travel agents make money, from training to lead generation

With rookie-to-advanced travel agent training , and a suite of tools ranging from lead-generation opportunities to custom marketing collateral to a seamless in-house booking platform, Fora is committed to helping our advisors succeed. We’re with them every step of the way.

In other words? We take care of the logistics (invoicing, commission payouts) and provide all the groundwork for how to be a successful travel advisor , so you can focus on the fun stuff.

… and offers super-fast payments

Fora makes it clear that they expect speedy payments from suppliers, and Fora Advisors are often paid before we receive a check. Likewise, our payments are the fastest in the business. You can expect commission payments twice monthly, via direct deposit.

Moscow in 1 Day (Walking tour)

Welcome to visit moscow tours.

We provide authentic, informative and memorable tour packages and city tours, at very competitive prices. Visit Moscow Tours are available not only in Moscow, but also in other cities: Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Suzdal and Sergiev Posad.  We also organise customised individual programs tailored just for you.

Our guests come in large groups, small private groups, as couples or as single travellers. We take care of and treat our guests with respect in a friendly and warm family environment. We show people our beautiful cities with passion and deep knowledge of their history, culture and traditions.

Our guides are extremely hospitable, helpful and well-informed. They are simply the best because only by providing the best services can we make the world fall in love with Russia. And we are very happy when our guests say that they will definitely come back to Russia and that they will tell all their friends how great Russia is! That is what inspires us to put even more dedication and hard work into our tours, knowing that what we do is positive and meaningful.

Our classic tours include tours of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, two main Russian cities.

Moscow is a big and busy  megalopolis and Russia’s capital city, where more than 12 million people live and work. Our capital city is happening place; it is mysterious, elegant, luxurious, fashionable, clean and bright, with its unique legends, traditions and events. It is with great pride that we show the Red Square and the Kremlin, our Underground and Tretyakovskaya Gallery, among other stunning attractions.

Saint Petersburg is our second capital,  the second largest city in the Russian Federation. This wonderful city has a strong and lively aristocratic spirit, uniquely Russian royal architecture, magnificent museums and theatres. Saint Petersburg bears the royal heritage of Russia, which can be felt in its air, its streets, parks, monuments, museums and citizens.  In Saint Petersburg tours, we will take you to the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Fortress, Faberge Museum and Orthodox Cathedrals. We’re sure you will love it!

If you have a few more days to spare, venture into the dreamy Russian countryside in Suzdal or Sergiev Posad. Suzdal is a small town with a population of about ten thousand people, situated on less than 15 square kilometres. This tiny area is home to 53 historic cathedrals, five monasteries and a kremlin. Church domes are visible like mushrooms from anywhere and everywhere in the town like in a fairy tale. No wonder Suzdal is called the ‘Town Museum”.  It is definitely worth visiting!

Just try any of Visit Moscow Tours’ tour packages or any individual city tour, and we promise that you will want to come back to Russia again.  Russia is huge with countless amazing places to visit. There are so many unique experiences to be had and energies to be felt that one tour is definitely not enough to explore this vast land. It is also a very safe destination to travel, and we have a tradition of warm hospitality. Our people adore and take care of visitors as our own guests, and even if they do not know your language very well, they still try to be helpful and hospitable.

Our guides will show you the most interesting attractions and historical places, taking you on a journey to the past to enjoy stories of medieval times, the Romanov monarchy, the Soviet Era. And of course, we will show you the contemporary life of our country through authentic local experiences.

We look forward to meeting you soon!

Cost of Living in Moscow, Russia

How much does it cost to live in moscow.

Moscow is the 871 year-old capital of Russia and probably one of the most iconic, global cities of the world.

Moscow has played a crucial role in the development of Russia and the world, and has quite a bit of history, which you can certainly see by its many monuments and gorgeous buildings and remnants around the city.

It is also the financial and political center of Russia and the countries formerly comprising the Soviet Union.

The cost of living in Moscow ranges greatly depending on your personal preferences, but in general, and excluding housing costs, you can survive on 300-400$.

RESTAURANTS

New Arbat Street is one of the most important streets in Moscow, since it’s a place where the rich wine and dine. You’ll find some of Moscow’s most expensive restaurants and nightclubs here. You’ll also find some reasonably priced cafes here, so no worries if you’re on a budget. You’ll also find cheap street kiosks, although the meat served is questionable and the food has been known to make some people sick. McDonalds and KFC can be found near almost every shopping mall.

For food, people generally shop at nearby shops and get locally produced food except for some types of fruits and vegetables that aren’t grown locally. Dairy is usually bought at Vkusville. If you purchase imported goods all the time, your cost of groceries will be higher, of course. A network of supermarkets called Vkusvill can be up to two times more expensive, but all food is more natural.

TRANSPORTATION

The cheapest way to use the public transport in Moscow is to buy a plastic Troika re-loadable smart-card. The card costs 0.70$ and can be exchanged for cash at the end of your trip. You can refill your balance on the card at any metro station. For each trip taken, 0.50$ will be deducted from your card. This way, you can go anywhere by bus, tram, trolleybus, monorail or the cicrular city train line.

UTILITIES (MONTHLY)

Most people living in Moscow consider utilities expensive, probably due to the fact that the bills skyrocket during winter (because of all the heating). However, compared to other capitals, utilities aren’t too expensive. For an apartment of 85m2 all basic utilities, including electricity, gas, garbage services, heating and cooling cost around 120$.

SPORTS & LEISURE

Though Moscow offers plenty of opportunities to practice sports outdoors, with its numerous forests, hiking tracks and roads, there are many people who prefer exercising inside. If you’re one of those people, a gym membership will cost you about 200$-400$ a year. If you want to take yoga classes, go to the pool or practice stretching, it can cost up to 30$ a month.

CLOTHING & SHOES

Moscow is probably the city with most shopping malls in the country. You can choose, from the Izmaylovsky Market, which is a venue with hundreds of vendors selling souvenirs, to the great GUM, where even if you don’t buy anything, you should go inside and look at the architecture. The prices are higher than anywhere else in Russia: quality jeans cost around 85$, and running sneakers are very close to 90$.

RENT PER MONTH

Your biggest cost in Moscow will be your accommodation. Rental properties vary quite a bit, depending on whether you want to live near a subway station or not and on the condition of the apartment. Usually, an apartment in the city center will cost around 875$ which is more than twice as expensive than in other Russian cities, while an apartment a bit more further will cost you over 500$.

Cost of Living Averages Table for Moscow

How does the average person spend their money in moscow.

Not surprisingly at all, with the rent prices that are sky-high in Moscow, hands down the biggest expense for anyone in this city are the rents.

And no wonder, really, the rents take up almost 40% of one’s income here!

The second biggest expense for the people living in Moscow is food, which is expected since it’s the only thing that absolutely HAS to be paid.

Restaurants are on the third place on the list of biggest expenses here – since many people eat there every day, three times a day.

Apparel is the least of all expenses, like in most cities, taking up only about 4% of all expenses.

Average Costs Breakdown

Moscow: average salary, minimum wage & mortgages.

The average salary in Moscow is almost twice as high than in other cities but taking into consideration the rents and the prices of utilities, transportation and other expenses, it’s not too high of a salary.

People that live in Moscow are excited and optimistic about living here, probably due to the fact that employment rate in Moscow is much higher than anywhere else, which is the norm for Russia’s big cities.

Minimum wage in Moscow is around 280$ which, although higher than in many other smaller cities of Russia, can definitely be a problem for the residents, since it isn’t even enough to cover all basic needs, let alone save up.

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

Where do you want to go?

FAQs for Russia

Q. where should i shop in moscow.

A. Moscow has huge shopping malls that vie for first place with the local street markets. So while you can find almost anything at the malls, for the more authentic items, such as junk jewelry, handicrafts, spices, toys, visit the street stalls.

Q. What can I buy in Saint Petersburg?

A. If you feel inclined, then real and faux fur are pretty cheap here, and they are really great quality. Or you can pick up souvenirs such as magnets, postcards, paintings of bottles of vodka.

Q. What are the main dishes of Russia?

A. Russian cuisine is all about high-protein ingredients, so expect a lot of cottage cheese, eggs, fish and meat. Three dishes that you absolutely shouldnt miss include:

  • Bliny: A thin crepe, stuffed with your choice of fillings
  • Sirniki: Special cottage cheese stuffed bliny
  • Pelmeni: Dumplings made of fish or meat

Q. Can we increase the stay in a particular city on this trip?

A. Yes, you can increase the duration of this package, but make sure to request such changes well in advance to the travel agent or the tour operator, so that no last minute problems arise.

Q. What sort of nightlife does Saint Petersburg have?

A. The nightlife of Saint Petersburg is definitely something that you would want to be a part of. There are plenty of rocking clubs and discos, which do a roaring business all through the night, especially in the Fontanka river embankment area, which also offers tremendous views.
