The Baltic is an area of Northern Europe that encompasses the Baltic Sea, Kattegat Bay and Skagerrak Strait, and it includes the bordering countries of Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, northeastern Germany and eastern Denmark. Amazing historical and cultural sites await passengers who cruise this magnificent region, and shore excursions typically visit museums, palaces, castles and cathedrals.

Stroll cobblestone streets amid medieval architecture in the well-preserved Baltic capitals of Riga, Latvia, and Tallinn, Estonia. Visit St. Petersburg's legendary Hermitage, considered one of the world's greatest museums, and spend time touring some of Russia's most notable grand palaces. Stroll through the "Venice of the North," the cosmopolitan city of Stockholm, well-known for its picturesque buildings, lush parks and unique waterways. Or, visit the beautiful city of Helsinki, with its small-town feel and eclectic blend of neoclassical and modern architecture.

  • Due to a cooler climate, the Baltic cruise season runs from May through September.
  • Baltic cruises, also known as Northern Europe cruises and Scandinavia cruises, are typically 4 to 16 nights, although a few ships offer longer itineraries.
  • In contrast to the Caribbean and Mexico, shoppers on Baltic cruises will find that items in stores can be pricey. Hand-knit sweaters, fine crystal, antiques, silver and porcelain are among items that passengers seek in these ports.
  • On Baltic cruises, you'll experience long hours of daylight.
  • Most Baltic cruises depart from capital cities such as London, Copenhagen and Stockholm, although a few cruise lines offer sailings from Kiel, a port in northeastern Germany, and Amsterdam. We suggest that you plan to arrive at least one or two days in advance of your Baltic cruise. This will give you time to rest and get oriented before boarding the ship. Most cruise lines offer pre-cruise hotel packages.

A Blissful Baltic Cruise On The Regent Seven Seas Navigator-Part 1

regent baltic cruises

While numerous luxury cruise lines offer excursions to the Baltic region, few can boast the luxurious accommodations, amenities and ambience of the Regent Seven Seas Navigator.  Perhaps the most significant single feature about this vessel is its size – with only 490 cabins (of which 90% have balconies), it is one of the smallest luxury vessels sailing the Baltic.  As such, it makes an ideal home base for destination-intensive exploration. Everything onboard feels close at hand. The small size also lets the staff raise the bar on service levels, whether it’s promptly refilling your wineglass or delivering scones to your suite when you miss them at afternoon tea.

My husband and I had the privilege of sailing the Baltic on this magnificent vessel.  What follows is a diary of our memorable trip – hopefully you will share many of these same experiences on a future Regent cruise!

The Baltic Diary – Regent Seven Seas Navigator

Why a Baltic Cruise?

We made a list of the places we want to see and this destination was in the top 5.  Exploring this region, Medieval Towns, Churches, History, Fairy Tales and towns where time has stopped would surely be surreal – and so it proved to be.

Day 1- Thursday evening departure, arrive Copenhagen 2 pm Friday Afternoon

regent baltic cruises

We flew on Scandinavian Air Service (SAS) from Chicago (10pm departure, 1 pm arrival, 9 hour flight) non-stop to Copenhagen, arriving at an unusual airport with all- wood floors.  It appeared to be Brazilian Teak throughout the entire airport.  Copenhagen is s a very pretty port city.  The economy here looks thriving (our driver confirmed there was virtually no unemployment) and the city is packed with natives and tourists.  The streets are filled with small cars and twenty and thirty-something’s riding bicycles.   We checked into Hotel D’Angeleterre, Kongens, Nytorv 34 in the middle of the downtown square.   The hotel is more than likely on a historical register, lively and lovely, with gorgeous paintings, exquisite flowers (orchids & roses everywhere) Old World charm and plenty of unusual characters milling around on the street and in the hotel. The beds and pillows are heavenly and quite European.  Electricity only works here in your room if you have your key card inserted, a nice way to conserve energy. Other guests here have included former Presidents (Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Dwight Eisenhower) and entertainers (Cher, Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi), plus many more.

After some rest and a shower, we had a late breakfast at the little café which is part of the hotel on the street.  After partaking of an absolutely delicious roast beef hash with Eggs Benedict meal, it was time to see Copenhagen!  We took a historical harbor tour on a little tourist boat and it was lovely.  Canals with sailboats, both old and new, apartments overlooking the canals and restaurants everywhere.  Also, some historical sights including a red fort (used only once to protect the city) and the Little Mermaid, a famous harbor statue known to all citizens of Copenhagen.  The mermaid’s creator was also a resident of the city – we saw Hans Christian Anderson’s residence for nine years of his life.  And, since it was Friday night all of the restaurants are filled with fun, beer and people.  The shops are packed, quaint stores everywhere in addition to LaPearla, LaCosta and the same high-end types form the USA.  Charming narrow alleys filled with them and many shoppers and buyers.

It’s evening, and everyone has recommended we see the Tivoli Gardens, the carnival that inspired Walt Disney to make Disneyland.  It is a very unusual place, a massive garden with an entry fee of $20 U.S.  Basically a flower field, the Gardens are well-cared for and surrounded by countless restaurants with a few carnival types of rides as well.  The floating ponds and water lilies were the most beautiful.  Afterwards, we ended up at a bar / restaurant (élan) near our hotel and had an impressive red wine with pate’ and cheeses for dinner (though note that Copenhagen can be an expensive place to dine.)

Both our hotel concierge and taxi driver told us that if you had only one day in Copenhagen, the things to see were the Tivoli Garden and the harbor (cruise).

Day 2 – Saturday – Playing in Copenhagen and on to board the Beautiful Regent Seven Seas Navigator

Saturday afternoon – after a refreshing walk thru the city and a swim at the hotel, time to depart for the ship – what an interesting drive thru the city: 5-story apartments, little outdoor café’s, tons of little shops and within 20 minutes we are at the Pier.  The embarkation was perhaps the easiest we have ever encountered.  A little tent under the sun with 5 Regent employees earnestly waiting to check us in.  10 stairs to the ship and we are on board a most stunning vessel.  Our cabin is impressive from the marble tub to the 200 square feet deck overlooking the harbor.  Of course the ship offers lunch but we decide to wait.  6pm cocktails and then on to dinner.  Beef Wellington, lobster – almost anything you could ask for including an extensive spa menu.

Day 3 – Sunday – Little town called Visby, on an island (Gotland) off the coast of Sweden

We awoke just in time for lunch.  We’re not normally keen on pool buffets, but who can resist- jumbo grilled prawns and salmon, bratwurst, potato salad and other delicacies from the sea.  After a lovely lunch on the aft deck off the Portofino Grill, we left to check out the village.  And encountered…winding, hilly, narrow cobblestone streets…the ruins of a 12th Century medieval church (St. Catherines, whose ceiling had been lost centuries ago and now opens up to the blue sky), and a street bazaar with treasures like woolen slippers (we bought three pair for our children).

After this wonderful sojourn around the city, we were ready for massages upon our return to the ship.  The spa’s variation on a Swedish massage had the masseuses actually straddling our backs while they (blissfully) dug their fingers into our torsos.  One of the best massages we ever experienced.

regent baltic cruises

And then, off to another sumptuous dinner which included lobster and soft shell crabs, followed by a chocolate soufflé. Surely this is what the Italians had in mind when they coined the phrase “La Dolce Vita” (the Beautiful Life.)

As I couldn’t sleep I lingered in the Internet Café till 3 am and then gave our 24 hour cabin service (with the tablecloth and waiter) a run for their money.  The pizza I had was exceptional.

Day 4 – Monday – Tallinn, the “Danish City” in the little country of Estonia

There were so many tours to choose from, such as: bike riding around the countryside with a tour guide, visiting a farm where lunch was served by the owners, and viewing palaces and concerts everywhere.  We elected to simply sightsee by walking the quaint cobblestone streets found everywhere in the city.  Aside from some souvenir purchases, we entered an old church (St. Nicholas’) where my husband took a couple of photos before being told that picture-taking was forbidden in the church.  We also found a charming café with local delicacies and locally-brewed beer.  To our surprise, this centuries-old café boasted Wi-Fi Internet connectivity in addition to first-rate hospitality.  It appears that the old meets the new in the charming city of Tallinn.

We are booked on the Baltic cruise in August and it is time to choose shore excursions.  In St. Petersburg we are planning on "Evening with the Tsars" and would also like to see St. Catherine's Palace.  For those of you who have taken this cruise- would you recommend St Catherines as a sperate tour or will we be able to tour it during the "Evening of the Tsars"?  Thank you for your time.

We liked the Evening with the Tsars so much we took it again the second time we went to StP.  One plus:  you get to see the palace with no crowds.  Case in point...the Amber Room is usually jam-packed and photography isn’t allowed.  On this tour, we had one of the babushkas shoot a photo of us in an empty Amber Room.  The dinner is okay, but the vodka is delicious.  This was one of our favorite tours.

I second the opinion of UUNetBill. We did the "Evening with the Tsars" in August 2017 and it was very very enjoyable. The fact that you can see the palace with no crowds is great. In contrast we did the Peter's palace tour during the day and the crowds were so large that we hated the experience.

We are on a Baltic cruise this August as well.  Not sure if it is the same one as the OP/TS.

According to the information i have we have access to Catherine's palace on a day that it is normally closed.  The tour operator for Regent is able to get us access to it on this day so i am hoping this means there will be smaller crowds. The evening with the Tsars offered is $199 pp USD which puts it over 250 pp for us so i am going back and forth on whether it is worth it or to just take the regular tour that gets us into the Amber room.

If the OP is on the cruise out of Stockholm on the 28th August, then please have a look at our roll call on the forum and sign up for Meet and Mingle.

We are doing a similar cruise in early July and I was looking at this Excursion also or the ballet.   Thoughts?   Has anyone done the full day tour to Moscow?

ronrick1943

ronrick1943

I haven't done a tour off a cruise---however Moscow is something to see.  I spend a full week in Moscow and always something to do and see.

We visited Catherine's Palace when it was closed to the public - and that is definitely the way to go!  Our guide, 3 of us and the Asst Director of the museum plus the cleaners...  I do not see how you can appreciate the Amber Room if it is full of people.  It is not big...and is just wonderful.  If doing the "Evening with the Czars" means you can see it with only a few others in the room - do it!!

Evening with the Czars is one of the two best tours we have ever taken on numerous cruises with RSS.  Do not miss it.  The Amber Room at your leisure is reason enough, but Catherine's Palace is amazing and there are other features that make this a tremendous experience.  Even the Russian restaurant after for dinner was a fun experience, even if it will never come close to a Michelin star.

We did the Regent excursion to Moscow on our August 2019 cruise. We were divided into two groups with 2 guides per group. It was very organized. Lots of walking ....I’m not kidding! No elevator in the buildings in the Kremlin. Not able to take pictures in there. It was a very long day but we are glad we went. Everyone was exhausted and slept late the next morning.

Not sure if TS is booked on the mid, or late August Explorer segment, both of which encompass St Petersburg.

Perspective from doing this year's Explorer, BTB, Stockholm-Southampton; Southampton-Southampton segments--

While at St. Pete, we stayed in St. Pete, having done the Moscow excursion element several years ago.  At St. Pete--it was Sunday evening enjoying the complete "Swan Lake" ballet.  Delightful early pre-ballet Russian-themed dinner onboard; quick bus ride to downtown venue; then post ballet buffet back aboard at La Veranda.  A night--and early next-day morning--to remember.

Our other St. Pete tour was at The Fabulous Faberge Museum.  That was a mid-morning three hour tour.  Wish it had been one more hour.  So-much eye candy to take in.  Guides accompanying us during all phases of both excursions were knowledgeable, personable--and tolerant as I conversed with them in my now-limited remembrance of Russian.

If--if your segment includes Bruges (Zeebrugge), Belgium:  Consider the 7-hour Ypres, in Flanders Fields.  Poignant tour of key WWI battlefield sites, cemeteries, monuments, and a Museum.  "In Flanders Fields the poppies grow. . . .row by row. .  ."

Now--on the DOWN SIDE.  Appears both of those Explorer segments includes Helsinki.  Should you consider a tour:  consider avoiding "Helsinki By Sea and Fortress Island". That was a paid-excursion.  Waste of money.  Local Guide was disjointed, hard-to-understand, and constantly rushing us on, and off ferry boats needed to get to and from venues.  FAGETABOUDIT, as one might opine in Brooklyn.  Wife and I--together with several others--abandoned that tour; caught a bus, and returned to Explorer.

I registered my concerns concerning this tour immediately.   So did others.   Therefore, it may have been "yanked" as to a current offering.   If it is still there, even if "included" at no-extra charge, save your time and try something else.

Hope the above assists in the decision-making process.

Re:  Helsinki tours.  If you are able to do a lot of walking, the Helsinki walking tour was terrific.  But it covered several miles.

In Helsinki, depending on the day of the week and/or time of the day  - my LW and I had great luck when we opted to take the tour bus [no specific excursion] to the city center.   Very close by there was a craft fair going on, quite a few of the local Finnish and a number of food trucks / stands with local selections.  Close by was even what looked like a converted train station that had many quality vendors with both cooked and take-away delicacies.

We didn't have to walk too much, there were a bunch of comfortable seating options and it was a great way to experience the local culture.

We did the Moscow day tour via Sapsan on our second trip to StP (first time we were there the Moscow tour was a charter flight that I’d heard bad things about).  The Sapsan is smooth and comfortable, but it’s still a VERY long day.  Unless you have a compelling reason to go to Moscow, I’d say there’s enough in StP to keep you occupied for three days.  Having said that, though, the Moscow trip was incredible.  Incredible but exhausting.  We left somewhere around 6:00 AM as I recall and didn’t get back on board until past 1:00 AM.  It caused everyone else in my group to pass on the Faberge museum the next morning at 9:00 AM.  I was the only one who went and I loved it.  But I was wrecked most of the day.

You’ll need to balance the long day against your desire to see Moscow.  My advice?  Stay in StP the three days and come back to Russia again to see Moscow.   😁 👍

Ha!  We bailed on that one, too.  Agree completely about being a waste of time and money.

I feel that Helsinki can be enjoyed easily by just walking around, or at least taking a quick highlights tour and then walking around.

Thank you for the additional info on Moscow and Helsinki.   We are going to do the whole day in Moscow, because we don’t really see that happening again in our travel plans.  However, the next day,  we don’t do anything until noon!   As for Helsinki,  the bad sea and fortress tour is still an option.   We had no plans to do that,  if I’m on a cruise,  I’m not a big fan of another boat ride!

Thank you all for your input- especially your photo Bill!  Rang in the New Year by booking shore excursions- very grateful for the wealth of knowledge on this forum.

St. Petersburg's city center is overflowing with history — why not choose museums that offer something a little different? Visit the quirky Faberge Museum, dedicated to the work of Russian jeweler Carl Faberge. Or enjoy an interactive experience at the Museum of Emotions.

Imperial Excursion

Take a drive to some imperial palaces outside the city center. Under an hour away by car lies exquisite Peterhof, whose fountains alone are worth the price of admission. Cruise to St. Petersburg and go by train to the Baroque-style Catherine Palace — can you guess which Russian ruler often stayed here?

Local Cuisine

Russians flock to St. Petersburg because of its cosmopolitan vibe, but use your stop here to discover local cuisine. Head to the restaurant-rich Nevsky Prospect to sample borscht beet root soup (the cold version in summer), dumplings of meat ( plmeni ) and sour cherries ( vareniki ) or hearty beef stroganoff — yes, that's a Russian dish!

St. Petersburg's shopping options are as grand as its architecture. The luxurious Gostiny Dvor mall is an essential stop with your St. Petersburg cruise. If you're looking for a more down-to-earth experience, try your luck (and your Russian language skills) at Udelnaya Flea Market and bargain for one-of-a-kind antique samovars or imperial porcelain.

Moscow is one of the world’s most opulent and fascinating capitals. Gaze at the city’s dazzling array of churches and monasteries, and explore the Kremlin and its Grand Palace , one of Moscow’s most iconic attractions - once home to Russians Tsars and communist leaders.

We've been running Moscow holidays since the 1980's, so whether you want see the best of the Soviet past, or the changing face of new Russia today - our experts can find the right tour for you.

Red Square is Moscow’s centrepiece displaying rich symbols of Russia’s turbulent past. St Basil’s Cathedral, one of the most famous pieces of architecture in the world, Lenin’s Mausoleum, and the prestigious GUM State Department Store are its main attractions. Travelling around Moscow couldn’t be easier – the metro is cheap, quick and reliable and most of the elaborate stations are attractions in themselves.

The city’s restaurant scene has come a long way so decide between Central Asian or Western European cuisine, often in surroundings recreating the Soviet past. No trip to this incredible destination would be complete without catching a world-class ballet or opera performance at the Bolshoi Theatre.

Regent Recommends

Just over three hours from the UK, Moscow makes an excellent city break destination for those who like their long weekends to be packed with history and culture. Take a ride on the opulent metro where grand chandeliers decorate cavernous stations, admire the iconic buildings of Red Square and perhaps catch a performance at the world renowned Bolshoi Theatre. For longer holidays consider pairing Moscow with a trip to the cultural capital in St Petersburg - less than four hours by train.
