I still don’t quite understand how DJ’s are making it all over the world. I get that it’s what is sort of happening in the world of popular music and has been for quite a while in the grand scheme of things but seriously, it does baffle me a little bit. Monkey Safari is unfortunately one of those bands that today of all the days have come under fire to my opinion, which is just an opinion. Remixes are remixes; it’s sort of a glorified way of saying it’s a re arrangement of a cover or something or other. I don’t know, rant over, they hold the audience in the palms of their hands – that’s right, there are two of them messing with knobs pressing play. Is it the magic of keeping a four to the floor beat going for half an hour that works? Fading tracks in and out of each other seamlessly with a button that beat matches? I sort of understand how that could be pretty thrilling, but wow. ANYWAY. Monkey Safari like I said show off some of their fantastically crafted remixes that they evidently put a lot of time into in a studio, and I can appreciate the amount of work that has gone in to that so a huge fair play to them for this set that ultimately entertains this eager group of punters this afternoon.

Monkey Safari: “Our music is much more melodic and emotional now”

The duo follow up their last lp, ‘odyssey’, with this warm, inviting collection of music designed to brighten your day and complement the glorious sunny days that bless us during the summer. sven and lars learned some valuable lessons from their last long-player, and the new album ‘hi’ comes from a far more relaxed, easy-going place., an organic project that came together quite naturally, their third album sees the duo in high spirits ready to bring a large dose of positive vibes and emotional depth to the party. with lars about to welcome his first child, the duo are clearly full of goodwill, optimism and good vibrations and ‘hi’ is reflective of this positive headspace. monkey safari will be sure to touch all scopes of dance culture with no signs of deceleration on the horizon. their mandate remains the same, sending sunny vibes to make even the darkest dance floors smile..

We caught up with Monkey Safari to talk about ‘HI’ .

Electronic Groove: Hi, Monkey Safari, thanks for chatting with us. Congratulations about your new LP ‘Hi’. What’s the first word that comes to your mind regarding this achievement?

Monkey Safari: Hello all! A new chapter, since ‘ HI’ stands for welcoming the beginning of a lot of new things.

EG: We really enjoyed ‘New Day’ premiere. What was the inspiration to produce this track?

Monkey Safari: I think ‘ New Day’ is the perfect soundtrack for getting rid of things which bother you or starting a new chapter with a positive mind. In this sense you could also see it a bit as a symbol of the transformation we have been going through lately.

EG: What about the whole album. Any special focus on the sound you wanted to achieve?

Monkey Safari: We just recently decided to take a step back from the darker sounds and not to get influenced too much by the techno hype that has been happening lately. With this being said, we tried to produce a new sound that reflects our personality and what we are truly feeling. Our music is much more melodic and emotional now.

EG: How long did it take to produce the complete LP? Where it was recorded?

Monkey Safari: All of our songs are produced in our studio back home. The production of ‘HI’ took us about 6 months.

EG: What would you say is the difference between ‘HI’ and ‘Odyssey’?

Monkey Safari: They are quite contrary . ‘Odyssey‘ was way deeper in comparison with ‘HI’ which is full of positive and happy sounds. You could say it’s the perfect summer soundtrack 🙂

EG: Any tours planned in order to promote the album?

Monkey Safari: We have a couple of shows coming up in India and a release party in our hometown. But since the festival season is right around the corner, we have plenty of possibilities to promote the album.

EG: Summer is here. What are your plans for the warm season?

Monkey Safari: We love all kind of outdoor parties, so we are really looking forward to that kind of shows. It’s always nice to play outside in the sun or a warm summer night and to have a good time with the crowd.

EG: What’s the origin of the Monkey Safari name?

Monkey Safari: We always wanted to produce happy songs which help people to enjoy themselves and make them forget about their everyday life. Kind of like you feel on vacation. I guess with this thought at some point the name ‘Monkey Safari’ just came up.

Monkey Safari proudly unveil their new album ‘Love Will Set U Free’, their fourth full-length project and their most definitive work so far, on their own label Hommage . Over the past year, the German duo has been utilizing the forced downtime to immerse themselves in making music. In such strange times, their creative process shifted, taking them down new avenues as they channeled their combined experience and broad backgrounds into the new LP. Unable to road test their music, as they normally would, Lars and Sven initially approached the album with slight worry – unable to tap into that seemingly crucial audience-to-artist feedback loop. However, in the end, it helped to liberate them resulting in a project that embodies the Monkey Safari sound in its purest form. As they say themselves:

“ The album reflects our musical diversity without being too influenced by what other people expect from us. ” – Monkey Safari

Across 10 tracks they explore a range of styles, while keeping true to their own distinct audio identity. There are forays into deep house and garage, the Chicago roots, breakbeat and hints of pop, too – all through the lens of the nineties era. Ultimately, this is a summer LP, the duo’s favorite month, and it represents what Monkey Safari do best; bringing positivity to everyone, whether they’re on the dance floor or chilling at home. From the very first track ‘Safe’, we’re transported to a world where the troubles of today have evaporated and been replaced with limitless joy and good vibes. The gentle rhythm and soothing atmosphere is the perfect way to get us in the mood for love. Next up is the title track and it lives up to its name with uplifting composition and emotional depth. This is one for a bright summer’s day, partying with your best friends in a field with a big soundsystem pumping out the beats. Hold tight for the glorious post-breakdown euphoria…

‘Opus’ follows on with a lowkey outlook and a tender build-up taking us into the main body of the track which is never too imposing. Considerate production means this one takes its time, with simmering emotion and a contemplative mood. On ‘Aduna’ Monkey Safari team up with Borneo, creating a soothing emotional voyage into the unknown. Softened breakbeats and a solemn atmosphere cultivate an air of nostalgia, as we reminisce about the world we left behind. Then we have ‘How Can I Let Go’ with Verboten Berlin, a heartrending vocal composition with unforgettable lyrics and a spellbinding breakdown. Together the two electronic music duos deliver an anthem with dance floor dexterity and pop sensibilities.

‘Temple’ is next and it’s a sumptuous cut with exquisite drum programming and soothing soulful vocals that massage the eardrums. This is a slow-moving track that penetrates deep into your emotional center. On ‘Sometimes’ the guys team up with DJ Island for a smooth, disco-infused groove into the warmth of a midsummer daytime soiree. Delightful vocals drift over the languid low end, offering an antidote to the troubled world outside our windows. ‘Sunset’ epitomises that time of day when day turns to night, dusk approaches and the sun slowly dips behind the horizon. There’s an air of melancholy as afro-infused vocals dance over the sombre instrumental, gradually taking us into a breakdown, after which a far brighter mood takes over. This is followed by another collab, this time with Dehlia de France. The German singer adds a unique touch to the track, which channels nineties break-driven pop to create a sentimental atmosphere that harks back to better times. Her delicate vocals act like a point blank message of love to the hearts of anyone who is listening. Finally, ‘Goodbye’ closes out the LP in an emotionally charged manner. Another breakbeat-influenced cut which combines melancholy keys, strings and bass with cosmic bleeps and heartfelt vocals.

As the album comes to its logical conclusion we’re left with an offering to ‘hold my hand, don’t look up… Goodbye’. At the core of ‘Love Will Set U Free’ is a simple, but powerful, message; in a time when conflict is rife on our planet, love can unite us and rejuvenate our divided world. Music has the power to create positive change, on an individual and societal level, we just have to harness that power, be ready to embrace the love within, and let it set us free.
