A Liwa Desert Safari: What To Know Before You Go

Blog , Middle East , United Arab Emirates / June 19, 2023 by Monica / 2 Comments

If you are headed to United Arab Emirates, you absolutely cannot miss the opportunity to join a Liwa Desert safari. It is a bucket list experience that you can’t miss! After countless visits to the Liwa Oasis, I’m passing on some firsthand knowledge on what to know before you go. Here is how to plan for a desert safari in Liwa!

A Liwa Desert Safari car driving across the steep dunes.

If you are planning a trip to the United Arab Emirates , then you have likely heard of the popular sunset and dinner safaris offered in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

These tours are offered year-round throughout the country, and they are quite easy to book . Hotels offer them, airlines offer them – heck, just about every tour operator in UAE will offer them.

While these local safaris are nice, and give a small taste of the desert atmosphere along with dinner and a show, they don’t hold a candle to Liwa.

A Liwa desert safari will take you deep into the true Arabian Desert, many miles away from civilization. Near the Saudi border, you will get a true sense of just how vast this landscape is.

The thing is, Liwa is not easy to get to. It is a full day commitment and requires an expert driver. And, in some cases, it can be tricky to book.

Below I will dive into what is so special about a Liwa desert safari, as well as when to go and how to book.

I’ll also be passing on secrets like what to wear and where to stay if you choose to extend your time in Liwa.

Let’s get into it!

Where Is Liwa?

Liwa is an area that sits on the Saudi Border, on the southernmost end of the UAE. It sits within the emirate of Abu Dhabi and is a great place to visit from the capital city.

What Is the Liwa Oasis?

The Liwa Oasis is a large area far removed from Abu Dhabi and Dubai , reachable via desert roads and dunes.

It lies at the northern edge of the Rub’ Al Khali Desert (also known as the Empty Quarter) which is the world’s largest uninterrupted desert.

In this area, past the endless swaths of sand, you will find inhabited villages, camel farms and date farms, and even small shops and stores. There are also a few hotels, which we will go into below.

Liwa Oasis truly is an oasis in the desert, and was the ancestral home of the Bani Yas Tribe. They were the largest and most significant tribe in the UAE.

Liwa Oasis covers a large area of natural, underground freshwater supplies. This water is what makes large date farms in the desert possible. Because of this water source, Liwa is one of the top date producers in all of UAE.

Liwa Oasis is the main economic zone of Liwa. But to anyone used to the bigger cities in the UAE, it will feel small and quaint.

Most tourists will never make it out to beautiful Liwa, and that is a shame. There is nothing quite like sleeping in the middle of the Rub Al Khali Desert.

Do people live in Liwa Oasis?

Today, people do still live in Liwa Oasis. What once would have been tribal land is now home to more than 20,000 inhabitants.

Most of these inhabitants are date farmers or tend to the camel farms in the area. Others run small shops, restaurants, or work in the hotels.

A Liwa Desert Safari: What to Know Before You Go

A Liwa Desert safari is a truly unforgettable experience – especially if you are able to book an overnight camping trip. The sky is so dark here, I’ve seen multiple shooting stars in the same night.

So let’s talk about how to book a Liwa Desert safari, what you will see and do, when to go to Liwa, and more.

What Is So Different About a Desert Safari in Liwa?

Firstly, Liwa will take you into the true heart of the Arabian Desert.

While the local dinner safaris can be a short 30 minutes drive into small patches of desert near Abu Dhabi or Dubai, Liwa is far .

Liwa sits approximately 4 hours from Dubai and 3 hours from Abu Dhabi. This can of course vary depending on exactly where you start and how deep into the desert you drive.

When you are driving within the dunes of Liwa, you can go for many miles without seeing another human. But in the deserts near the cities, you always have a sense that civilization is nearby.

What is Included on a Liwa Desert Safari?

This can vary slightly depending on the company you book through, and possibly the time of year. Additionally, you can book a Liwa Safari as a day trip, or as an overnight camping trip.

The general itinerary is as follows.

  • Morning pick up from your hotel in Abu Dhabi in a 4×4 vehicle.
  • A visit to The Emirates National Auto Museum, if the guests are interested. The museum showcases unusual cars and cars from the Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan.
  • Dune bashing across the giant sand dunes. Dune bashing is when your expert driver zooms up and down the sand dunes like a rollercoaster. It is a thrilling experience!
  • Photo stops along the way.
  • A picnic lunch at green Oasis.
  • Camel farm visits, if you are lucky.
  • A visit to Tal Moreeb Dune – a dune that towers more than 980 feet high.
  • A visit to the grand Qasr Al Sarab Hotel for sightseeing.
  • Drop off in Abu Dhabi before dinner.

Should you book an overnight safari in Liwa, it also includes camping in the desert.

More details on the places you’ll visit:

  • The Emirates National Auto Museum – While I could generally take or leave a car museum, this one is memorable! From the very start, you will see gargantuan vehicles with wheels taller than a human. The museum also holds Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan’s seven rainbow colored Mercedes inside.
  • The Camel Farms – The camel farms are so interesting to visit because they are not there to be “just” a tourist stop. These are working farms in the middle of nowhere, built for camel breeding or camel milk. You’ll get to meet these cool creatures face to face and learn more about their nature.
  • Tal Moreeb – Moreeb Dune is a special place for me. It is the tallest sand dune in the UAE at 5,250 feet long and 984 feet high. The incredible 50 degree slope makes it difficult to climb, and extremely so in the summer heat. But if you make it to the top you will be rewarded with wonderful views!
  • Qasr al Sarab – Though it may sound strange to stop at a hotel on your desert safari, this hotel is worth the visit. It is considered the height of luxury in Liwa, and it even showcases interesting artifacts as you roam the halls. Not to mention, a nice break to stretch your legs can’t be beat.

Visiting Liwa as a solo female.

“Rub al Khali” or The Empty Quarter is the entire reason I first visited the UAE. I had read about it growing up, and I always wanted to see it for myself.

Most people come here for the glitz of Dubai, but not me. I planned a visit primarily to go to the Liwa Desert.

I was visiting the UAE as a solo female , and you should know that this made getting to Liwa admittedly more difficult.

Pro Tip: Liwa is located deep in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, toward the Saudi border. To learn more about visiting Abu Dhabi as a woman , I’ve got you covered.

Though outsiders picture Dubai as super modern and forward-thinking, it’s wise to note that traditional and conservative morals guide the way of life here. It is a beautiful aspect, but also a limiting one in my case.

Meaning, a solo male and a solo female should not be together if they’re not related or not married. In the case of Liwa, as all of the desert drivers are male, it took a lot of calls, emails, and persistence for weeks before the trip.

In the end, I did find a company that would take me into the desert solo. But, I can’t guarantee that will always be the case.

Can you self drive to Liwa?

For anyone familiar with my travels, you may be wondering why I didn’t try to rent a car and make this trip solo.

The answer is simple – my goal was to camp deep inside of the desert, near the Saudi border, after hours of driving on the actual sand dunes.

Driving on dunes rather than the roads requires a bit of special know-how. For example, deflating and inflating the tires to acceptable air levels is a must. Knowing exactly where you are when all of the dunes look the same to the untrained eye is a special skill.

People die in the Arabian Desert every year and getting lost is a real possibility. So it is not something to take lightly unless or until you really know what you are doing.

Nowadays, since befriending a local, I’ve had the wonderful luck to have camped in Liwa many times over now – and it never loses it’s charm.

What to Wear on a Liwa Desert Safari ?

Ladies, the key here is to balance conservative dress with comfortability. No matter the season, I recommend wearing layers in Liwa.

It might surprise you, but even in the hot summer months, I usually wear long sleeves over a lightweight shirt and flowy pants.

This is both due to the conservative nature of the country as well as the added protection from the sun. Long sleeves and pants will actually keep you cooler by keeping those rays off of your skin.

While I have a full post on what to wear in Dubai , I will list out the specifics for a desert safari below.

liwa desert trip

A Long Flowy Dress

This is a gorgeous option for those Instagram-worthy desert pics. A long flowy dress on the dunes is nothing short of magical when the wind blows in. Get yours here!

liwa desert trip

A Loose Kimono

My number one go-to for the desert, a loose flowy kimono is ideal. It instantly makes any type of dress more modest as it covers you in flowing fabric. It also covers your waist and hips if you prefer fitted leggings, like me. Get yours here!

liwa desert trip

A Breathable Tank Top

I love that I can sneak a tank top under a kimono. It keeps me very cool but covered, at the same time. Moisture wicking or athletic tanks are best. Get yours here!

liwa desert trip

Comfortable Leggings

As I mentioned, tight leggings are okay when under a tunic or kimono. You can probably get away with them if your shirt if flowy enough, too. Opaque is a must. Get yours here!

liwa desert trip

Loose Palazzo Pants

Loose airy pants are absolutely wonderful for the desert! They keep you cool in the sun and comfy on the drive. Get yours here.

liwa desert trip

A Lightweight Scarf or Shawl

In the desert, a lightweight scarf is key. Thick fabrics feel heavy but lightweight fabrics don’t weigh you down. I own this one in multiple colors. Get yours here!

liwa desert trip

Strappy Sandals

These strappy sandals are my current fave as they can be dressed up or down. And they slip on and off easily if you want to walk barefoot in the sand. Get yours here!

liwa desert trip

A Wide Brim Hat

This exact wide brim hat has been across the world with me. It will keep you protected from the sun and it is fully adjustable in size. It is also packable and crushable. Get yours here!

Liwa at Night

If you are able to book an overnight camping safari, absolutely do it. Your night under the stars will be unforgettable, and the sunset and sunrise are indescribable.

I personally recommend spending more on an overnight safari and booking more budget-friendly hotels if you have to choose one splurge only.

Do’s and Dont’s of a Liwa Desert Safari

  • DO bring a high quality camera because the landscape is breathtaking. Bring a good case to cover the camera with when the wind picks up so the sand doesn’t scratch your lens.
  • DON’T be afraid of the camels in the desert! They are fascinating and will generally leave you alone while they live their camel-lives. They are also very fun to interact with on the farms.
  • DO let your driver know if you are feeling motion sickness from the dune bashing. You’d be surprised how commonly guests need to get out and throw up from the crazy driving, I’ve been told.
  • DON’T forget your sunny weather necessities – wide brim hat , sunglasses , scarf , and long sleeves .
  • DO find a quiet place to sit and take it all in. Be in the moment, soak it up. Liwa is an amazing place.
  • DON’T forget to tip. The drivers have to deposit the money you pay them to the company they are driving for. Tips are greatly appreciated after a full day of hard work across the desert.

Where To Stay In Liwa

I have stayed in just about every Liwa Hotel that has existed in the past decade and I am going to list the top three below.

1. Qasr Al Sarab

Qasr al Sarab is known as the best of the best in the desert. The grounds are luxurious, the staff is professional, and the rooms are to die for.

You can even book rooms with private pools overlooking the vast desert. Qasr al Sarab also offers desert excursions and meals on site.

2. Tilal Liwa

Tilal Liwa is a solid choice. Located on the other side from Qasr al Sarab, Tilal Liwa is continuously offering special packages and rates for holidays and such.

The pool is divine, and the breakfast spread is impressive. While certain details are beginning to need slight updating, this hotel holds a special place in my heart.

3. The Liwa Hotel

After a brief hiatus, Liwa Hotel is back! They appear to have upgraded during the 2020/2021 closures, and things are looking good here. It was a good option pre-remodel and I have a feeling it is even better now.

Of course you have a pool, comfy beds, and endless desert outside.

Final Thoughts on Liwa Desert

Liwa Desert is without a doubt one of my favorite places on the planet.

The solitude and peace I felt here is indescribable.

It also holds a special meaning for me since it was a place I’d dreamed of visiting ever since reading that book in my childhood. I guess I was always meant to be an explorer, even before I knew it myself.

If you ever get the chance to go to the United Arab Emirates, do not pass up the chance to visit Rub al Khali, my lovely Empty Quarter, and absolutely book your Liwa Desert Safari, NOW!

Thanks for the helpful post. I’m a single female who was hoping to go desert camping in January while in the UAE. Sounds like they might be impossible to organize. I guess there are no groups that a single female can join?

November 28, 2021 at 10:17 pm

Hi Janet! Definitely not impossible, you just need to be persistent. And actually, January will be during their busy season so you may have an easier time finding a spot with a group. I would start by calling a few companies and letting them know what you’re looking for and what date range. I think if you can be flexible on which day of your trip you visit Liwa, you might have luck in January. Let me know if you have any other questions and DEFINITELY let me know what you think of Liwa once you go!! It is honestly worth the trouble!

Liwa Oasis

The Empty Quarter

Liwa, also renowned as Liwa Oasis, is a fascinating destination located in the Western Region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Travellers have abundant choices to indulge in Liwa, including free activities to try, discovering the desert environment, sightseeing its famous highlights, kid’s entertainment and many more to come. In this guide, we have put up Liwa’s best attractions, places to visit and things to do. Given that, travellers could plan their trip to Liwa with every single detail in mind.

Free Activities to try in Liwa

Stay excited in the empty quarter – liwa oasis.

Empty Quarter – Liwa Oasis

Once occupied by the Bani Yas Tribe, the Liwa Oasis is found on the northern edge of Rub al Khali’s isolated desert hideaway. Sun-drenched sandbanks scattered across the Oasis makes it even more attractive to spend the day. Liwa oasis displays the most extended palm tree expanse of the Middle East region which lies within a part of this sand-rimmed secluded territory. The underground natural water reserves are the significant feeding sources of date cultivation and palm trees. As the leading date farming region in the UAE, Liwa also attracts a large number of local and international visitors. It will be an everlasting memory for the visitors to sight a destination on earth where the desert meets the greens. The lush green palm trees and shimmering dunes create sublime backdrops for BBQ, lunch out and picnics with your friends and family.

226 KM / 2 to 2.5 hours

Visitors can use standard transportation methods to reach the destination. However, you will need a 4x4 off-road jeep to tour around the desert.

Hike the world’s biggest dune in the UAE - Tel Moreeb

Tel Moreeb – Liwa

As the name represents – “Scary Hill” so-called Tel Moreeb is the ideal place for some real adventure in the UAE. Renowned as the UAE’s tallest and the world’s biggest dune mountain, Moreeb Dune elevates up to 300 meters and stretches beyond 1600 meters. Getting on to the summit is one of a kind challenge, yet it gives the spectacular vistas of the sun-kissed desert. This vertiginous sand mountain is well-known for drag racing, dune bashing, camel trekking and several other off-road racing events. The peak season in Tel Moreeb begins during the Liwa International Festival where numerous adventures are held.

244 KM / 2.5 to 3 hours

Travellers can reach the destination by car. From there, you will need a 4WD. During the Moreeb hill climbing event season, jeep facilities are available to take on the dunes and should be accompanied by a qualified Liwa desert guide.

Visit the Camel farm

Liwa Camel farm

Can you imagine a desert without camels? So do the desert of Liwa, which has a notable camel density. The camels found around the Liwa desert consist of unique species called “Liwa camels”. One could observe the ships of the wilderness free of charge in the Liwa desert, during their journey to Tel Moreeb. These camel farms belong to Bedouins – They are a group of semi-nomadic Arab people who are always attached to camels. Unlike other camels you have seen in Abu Dhabi neighbourhood, the camels residing in the Liwa desert are unique in colour. This is why they are known as “black camels, originated from Saudi Arabia. On a lucky day, you will witness herds of black camels passing along the sandy desert of Liwa. Also, take this opportunity to sit back and go on a camel ride and sip a cup of fresh camel milk.

Ordinary vehicles – car/van

Meet the Epic desert Fortress - Fort Dhafeer

Liwa Fort Dhafeer

In addition to desert adventure, visiting Fort Dhafeer is one of the tourist attractions in Liwa. Representing the structure of a real sandcastle, at first glance, you will never believe it is a man-made construction. These simple strongholds built in the past helped protect the region from the outbreaks by rival tribes. Although there is nothing much to discover within, it gives you a clue of the 19th-century mud-brick architecture practised by the Emiratis. Nevertheless, you will never regret visiting this place as the charismas lies at the roof-top view. Climb up the staircase to the terrace where you will encounter dunes spanning over miles and miles.

A walk in the desert to remember

Liwa desert walk

Although there are plenty of things to do in Liwa, the desert walk is a must include in your bucket list. Feel the desert breeze blowing towards your face as you pass by sand rims and enormous dunes. The powdery sand below your feet and the deep lustrous yellow sky above head creates a memorable desert walk indeed. However, we highly recommend you to keep an eye on a landmark or your vehicle as the chances of getting lost are high. Make sure the distance of your car is within reach. Also, carry plenty of water to stay hydrated while you are feeling the spirit of desert walk.

Visitors may drive by car. Travellers must park their vehicles at the safe parking plot, which is on the highway before heading towards the desert.

Enjoy memorable desert adventures in Liwa

  • Best Things to do in Liwa
  • Festivals in Liwa

The climate and geographical location of the UAE ensure some truly breathtaking landscapes, with one such mesmerising destination being Liwa in southern Abu Dhabi. Popularly known as the Liwa Oasis, this desert-based dwelling was where the Bani Yas tribe originally settled way back on in the 18th century. It’s this history and the awe-inspiring natural beauty that make Liwa such an amazing place to visit – but you might be wondering what there is to do once you get there? Well, from dune bashing to ancient forts, there really is no shortage of amazing activities to take part in and fantastic places to see. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the best things to do in Liwa.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN LIWA

Plan a trip with your friends or visit with family for a holiday to remember. Here are some popular activities in Liwa you can try!

DISCOVER TEL MOREEB

Quad bike in a desert, quad biking is one of the best things to do in Liwa

Tel Moreeb is one of the tallest sand dunes in the world. The name literally translates to “a scary mountain.” It is 300 metres tall with a 50-degree incline — making it tough to scale.

For those who do manage to summit the dune, the spectacular desert views are well worth the effort. You’ll also spot people trying to climb on quad and dirt bikes.

VISIT FORT DHAFEER

Another major attraction at Liwa is Fort Dhafeer. The fort is a symbol of an era gone by when the region was at risk of invasions. The structure protected local residents from attacks by enemies and bandits.

The architecture dates back to 19th century Arabic fort designs. Constructed from mud bricks, it still stands today.

Climb up the terrace to see the expansive desert and the tranquil oasis. The best part of visiting Fort Dhafeer is that you don’t need a special 4×4 to get here.

VISIT THE CAMEL FARM

Camels in Liwa

One of the most popular things to do in Liwa for families, in particular, is to visit a camel farm. These Bedouin-run camel farms are free to enter and offer a one-of-a-kind experience to visitors.

Spot the special breed black-coated residents called the Liwa Camel. This particular breed is native to the Liwa region. They stand out from the rest of the herd due to their distinctive black colour. Additionally, you can also try fresh camel milk at these farms.

HEAD TO THE TRANQUIL LIWA OASIS

Lofty palm trees in the middle of the desert are a sight to behold! Liwa Oasis, one of the most beautiful UAE Oases , is a lush-green haven located on the northern border of the Empty Quarter.

The stunning oasis has underground freshwater reserves that provided for the resident bedouins across multiple centuries. This is also what makes it one of the leading date cultivation oases in the UAE.

The greenery is a complete contrast to the intimidating sand dunes of the vast Empty Quarter. The picturesque surroundings make it a great place for a picnic.

TAKE A STROLL THROUGH THE DESERT

Desert Walk activity in Liwa

Desert walks are the perfect way to explore the expanse of the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter). The sands spread across 650,000 kilometres. Beginners are recommended to traverse the dunes with expert guides who have experience with desert walks in the Empty Quarter.

There are several other tour operators in Abu Dhabi and Dubai that offer dune bashing tours. But if you have your own vehicle, you can take on the dunes yourself after carefully planning your journey. Sandboarding in Liwa is also a thrilling and popular activity, are you ready to ride those dunes?

Participants bring high-tech four-wheelers, quad bikes and dirt bikes to compete in the Moreeb Hill Climb. The event is held each year from December to January.

LIWA DATE FESTIVAL

The Liwa Date Festival celebrates the nutritious date fruit that has fulfilled the dietary requirements for those who have lived in the desert for centuries. The date tree is also valued for its trunk and fronds, which are used in handicrafts, tools and construction.

Camel Farm

When we speak of the desert, we immediately think of camels, don’t we? Well, Liwa Oasis has its own breed of camels known as the Liwa camels. Drop by for free at any of the Bedouin-run camel farms on your way to Moreeb Dune in the Liwa desert. Unlike their Abu Dhabi counterparts, Liwa camels originated from Saudi Arabia and are black in colour. You might be one of the lucky ones if you get to view black camels passing in herds across the red sand of the Liwa desert. While at the farm, why not try out some fresh camel milk, if you are lucky to get hold of the owner or the worker at the farm

Fort Dhafeer Fort

One of the many forts that were built across the oasis to safeguard from invading tribes, the Dhafeer fort looks like a sand castle in reality. The fort doesn't offer much in terms of history, apart from giving you a good idea of the mud-brick architecture that was at large in the 19th century. The highlight of this attraction is climbing up the stairs to the terrace, which will bring you face-to-face with a heightened view of the never-ending sand dunes that seem to go beyond the horizon.

A guide to Liwa Oasis and the Moreeb dune

liwa desert trip

At that precise moment when you find yourself surrounded by a vast sea of dunes whose end can’t even be seen from the furthest horizon, there are no signs of modern civilization and the deepest silence is only broken by the growl of camels and the warm welcome of the local Bedouins, you start wondering:

Am I still in that luxurious and pretentious Gulf country called the United Arab Emirates?

Because no one can argue against the idea that the Liwa Oasis and the Empty Quarter (Rub al-Jali) represent the most authentic, wild and pure image of the often underrated Arabian Gulf.

This guide to the Liwa Oasis contains everything you need to know, including things to do in Liwa, accommodation and transportation tips.

Introduction and history to the Liwa Oasis in Abu Dhabi

Liwa Oasis is located in the south-eastern part of the country, 250km from Abu Dhabi and 350km from Dubai , very close to the border with Saudi Arabia .

The oasis is situated on the north-eastern edge of the Empty Quarter (Rub-al-Jali) , a vast desert spread across the UAE, Saudi Arabia , Oman , and Yemen , which is the largest continuous sea of dunes in the world.

It extends over an area of 650,000km² and measures 1,000km in length by 500km in width.

The Bedouin who lived in the oasis of Liwa (the Bani Yas tribe) tapped underground, freshwater recourses to cultivate dates and, as a result, a large number of villages and settlements appeared in Liwa during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Liwa was the birthplace of the Nahyan family , the current ruling family of Abu Dhabi and the UAE, which, back then, was the leading family of the Bani Yas tribe.

However, at the end of the 18th century, the Nahyan family decided to move to Abu Dhabi to work in the pearl industry as, during that century, collecting and trading pearls had become a key element of the region’s economy.

Nevertheless, some Bedouin remained in Liwa and, for the next couple of centuries, they built forts and towers to protect all their resources.

Today, the cultivation of dates in Liwa is so important for the country’s economy, that they are even building a train to Liwa with the sole objective of taking the dates to the capital and making them ready for exportation.

The Liwa is Oasis is absolutely breath-taking but, on top of that, this is the only place in the country where you can experience the real, ancient Emirati culture.

Liwa Oasis accommodation

There are a few hotels, two of them very close to the main Liwa Oasis attractions and the other in Madinat Zayed, a small town 60km away from the actual oasis.

If you are planning to visit Liwa during high-season, do book in advance, as they tend to be quite busy.

The cheapest – Liwa Hotel – The hotel is all right, nothing fancy but the location is quite unbeatable, right in the middle of the sea dunes, from where you get stunning views of the Empty Quarter.

A bit nicer (but further away) – Tilal Liwa Hotel – The hotel itself is nicer than Liwa Hotel, especially because it has an amazing pool and the rooms are definitely better. However, the location is not that great, as it is 60km away from the core of the oasis.

The best –  Anantara Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort – This resort is the most awesome desert hotel in the country. With some of the most stunning views ever, this 5-star hotel is real Emirati luxury combined with tradition. Even if you are not staying here, it is worth checking out.

Things to do in Liwa

Climbing the moreeb dune.

The culture and history of the UAE might be interesting but, the landscape of the Empty Quarter is simply stunning, to the extent that there’s a famous dune called Moreeb (or Tal Mireb, meaning scary hill) that is  300 meters high , 1,600 meters long and has an inclination of more than 50 degrees.

It’s considered one of the highest and biggest dunes in the world and climbing it to the top is a real sport but very rewarding at the same time.

Such is the importance of this dune, that the Government has built a road to the dune itself, so you don’t really need a 4WD  to reach it.

Moreover, at the bottom of the dune, there is a huge complex that holds camel racing and cultural festivals such as the Liwa Dates Festival .

The Moreeb Dune is one of the top things to do in Liwa.

Read: Dubai off the beaten track

Moreeb dune

Driving among massive dunes

If you like driving, the road that goes to Tal Mireb passes by vertiginous sand mountains that will make you want to stop at every one.

You don’t really need a 4WD but, sometimes, because of the wind, some parts of the road might be covered with sand, so just drive carefully!

This journey is another great thing to do in Liwa.

How to get to Liwa Oasis

Watching the sunset over the Empty Quarter

One piece of advice: bring a bottle of wine and drink it at the top of a dune while you watch the sunset over the largest sea of dunes in the world, the Empty Quarter.

Nowhere else I have been to, have I been surrounded by such a huge amount of sand.

This was, indeed, my most favorite moment of my trip to Liwa.

Liwa Oasis UAE

Meeting authentic Emirati Bedouins

Due to the country’s strong economic growth and the endless luxury resources the government provides for its citizens, nowadays, there are not many Emirati Bedouin who still keep their traditional way of living.

However, the few Bedouins who do remain are settled along the road in Liwa, where they live in small shacks and make a living from cultivating dates and raising camels.

Only a small bunch of tourists decide to come to this area, so if you ever find one of these shacks where the Bedouin live, stop there and you’ll get all their attention. They don’t speak English at all, but they will be happy to take you around the farm and offer you camel milk.

What seems incredible to me is that, if they wanted, they could live a comfortable life thanks to the help of their government but, they have so much love for the desert and their camels, that they have decided to live as their ancestors used to.

Bedouin Liwa

Visiting Camel Farms

You will never see as many camels as in Liwa Oasis.

They are everywhere, either walking randomly among the dunes or in camel farms, which are often run by real Emirati Bedouin and, like I said, if you are lucky and brave enough, you can have some fresh camel milk.

Liwa Oasis activities

Epic desert fortresses

Besides desert adventure, a top Liwa Oasis tourist attraction is visiting the few fortresses which have been amazingly restored and, somehow, look like sand castles.

Liwa Oasis attractions

Other desert activities

I am not a big fan of that but, if you are into dune bashing, quad riding, etc. your hotel can organize absolutely any activity you want. Actually, you are likely to see a few people riding over the dunes.

How to get to Liwa Oasis

As I said previously, Liwa Oasis is located 250km south of Abu Dhabi , next to the border with Saudi Arabia .

From Dubai, it is a good 3 to 4-hour drive, depending on how fast you go and the only way to come here is by car.

This isn’t a day trip, and you should really spend the night here in order to enjoy it to its fullest.

Liwa Oasis

Hey Joan, great article! Having lived in the UEA for 3 years as a teenager, Liwa has a special place in heart. These photos really capture the magic of the empty quarter. Thanks for transporting me back 🙂

I m travellig to Liwa from Abu Dhabi. Any suggestoons for accomodations any tours if I m driving my own vehicle.

Hi Joan, thanks for this inspiring article! Do you have any infos about camping in/around Liwa Oasis? Thanks and best wishes,

Hi Vanessa, yes, camping is very doable. Just be careful where you camp though, as some locals drive like crazy around the dunes, so try to pitch your tent in a spot where you are visible

Hi Joan, I have send you an e mail about liwa. Hope you have time to read it.

Hi Joan, I love your blog – it’s really helped me with my travel plans to the Middle East. However, I have a question for you. I know you said to avoid travelling in the UAE or Oman during the summer months, but I will have a 3-day layover between Tajikistan and Iraqi Kurdistan in early September due to my flights going through Dubai. I wasn’t too keen on Dubai the last time I was there (granted I was jet-lagged and I was there for less than 24 hours, but it was March and already oppressively hot) so was thinking of spending my three days in Muscat instead, as it seems more culturally interesting. Or would the Liwa Oasis be a better bet? (1 day in Dubai, 2 days there). I know it’s not an ideal time to travel to the area, but this is what I’ve got. I’d rather not spend the entire time trapped inside a shopping mall or my hotel, but I want to be realistic about the heat and things I can do. So basically, what’s the best option in either the UAE or Oman in early September? I don’t have to stick to the big cities but on the other hand I don’t want to be travelling too much in high desert heat either.

Hi Rachelle, Liwa Oasis is my most favorite place in all the Arab Peninsula, so I would definitely tell you to visit it, as it is so different from anything else you will see. Muscat is also great but it is not the highlight of Oman. I recently wrotr a guide to Muscat, you may want to check it here: https://againstthecompass.com/en/visit-muscat/

Hello Joan Are there any problems to go by hired car from Abu Dhabi to Liwa Oasis? Regards from Switzerland Pete

Hi Pete, no problem at all, I have the done it before

Dear Joan, Thanks for promoting Liwa and the UAE. I wish i had met you while visiting the area, i could have shown you around and guided you to many places. Anyhow, should you plan to re-visit Liwa, you will be my guest All the best and keep posting your adventures in Arabia. Karim “sand god”

So excited that we booked a day tour to Liwa from Dubai. Long drive but your article helped us pull the trigger! I’ll post back when we return.

Thank you Tammy, I’ll really appreciate your feedback 🙂

Thank you so much for this article!! I am planning to do a trip there too and its so helpful. By any chance, do you happen to know where the photo of you on the dune was taken at? Just an estimated Google Maps pin? Thatd be so helpful. I wanns take my mom there!!

Hi Max, you can look for Moreeb dune. We took it from the top. Cheers,

Thank you for the article. We want to visit a working camel farm in Liwa. Can you please give us a location? Thank you

You can find one on the road to Moreeb dune

The railway is used to transport granulated sulphur, a byproduct of the petroleum industry. (You can make fertilizer and lots of other stuff from sulphur.)

The railway is not for dates – even a lot of dates aren’t enough dates to warrant a railway…

You can also get to Liwa easily by bus from Abu Dhabi (capital express).

There’s even a local bus that connects the different parts of the Liwa oasis along the east-west main road (Eastern and Western Mahadir) with the main bus station in Liwa town. (However I’d still recommend a car because service isn’t that frequent and the bus won’t go everywhere you want or need to go – but it definitely does exist and could be convenient to pick up someone joining your group later in the adventure…)

LIWA DESERT - A Complete Feature

liwa desert trip

The desert life is very different from what we see in the city lights. Liwa desert is one of the most adventurous deserts in all UAE. A trip to the United Arab Emirates gives tourists the golden opportunity to witness the vast expanse of the desert. Beyond the sun and desert lies the mysterious life of the desert. Yes! Even amidst the scorching sun, life continues to thrive building a culture of its own. The United Arab Emirates is a sterling example of the interesting life in the desert and how it can be a wonderful experience.

Moving on LIWA, let’s take you through the history of the place. LIWA is not just any other oasis on the map. It houses more than 50 different villages. In fact, this oasis leaves an important and indelible mark on the geography of the beautiful city of Dubai. LIWA is the original home of royalty that rule the cities of the United Arab of Emirates. Yes! The present ruling family was originally based in LIWA and in 1973, they moved to the current capital, Abu Dhabi. Needless to say, traces of this royalty can be seen even today.

Therefore, a visit to Dubai is incomplete without going through the beautiful oasis of LIWA.

liwa desert trip

In the past, the oasis was where communities travelling through the desert hoped to find water and of course their own kind for any help that was needed. Oasis was where people set their livelihood simply because this is the one place where they were sure to find water and fertility in the land. The LIWA Oasis is located on the 100 Km off the south of Persian Gulf and shares its boundaries with Saudi Arabia as well as Abu Dhabi. For the locals, this oasis is the Southernmost settlement of Abu Dhabi.

liwa desert trip

Connectivity

There was a time when the only connectivity to the oasis was through the rugged travel in the desert. But now times have improved. Today, you have state of the art multilane highways connecting the LIWA oasis to the important centres in Abu Dhabi. Therefore traveling to this part of the country is not at all difficult.

Liwa desert safari (Day tour and Overnight) The LIWA desert safari is a complete tour package which includes sightseeing, transport to the desert, a slice of the desert life, camp bonfires, and a lot more. There are two options to choose from. For those who are on a short tour, we would recommend the day tour. But if you have the time spare, take the night tour as it includes sightseeing and stay at the desert. The accommodation is in a beautiful tent which in itself is a unique experience. At an additional cost, users can also include more activities in their routine. Visit to Qasr Al Sarab, car museum and other landmark sites are also included in the tour. For a taste of luxury, we recommend the dune buggies ride at LIWA. You can also participate in the Bedouin camps where the elements are carefully integrated to give the traveller a unique experience of the desert.

All tour was fun and “wowww” type adventure. We want to do it again after two years when we visit Abu Dhabi. Tom Veil Date: June 5, 2017 Liwa Desert Safari
